BOC boss Miller thanks PM for ‘encouraging note’ By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net DESPITE the effects Hurricane Matthew has had on many aspects of day-to-day life for Bahamians, the plethora of major sporting events the country expects to host in 2017 are expected to remain on schedule. Bahamas Olympic Committee President Wellington Miller said the local community was reassured by the words of Prime Minister Perry Christie earlier this week which suggested the sports tourism schedule would be able to continue uninterrupted. “I want to thank the Prime Minister for those words of encouragement that none of the big events they were going to have next year will be cancelled. To myself and

to ensure that it’s celebrated by all involved in the 8-9 disciplines. More than 1,300 athletes from 70 countries are expected in town July 18-23 in the capital. “A lot of people have already committed and are coming down early. To be able to tell them for certain as they were waiting on answer for us to see if the games are on and the Bahamas will still host the event in 2017, it’s a great relief,” Miller said. The last time that a Commonwealth event was held in the Caribbean was in 1966 when the Commonwealth Games was staged in Kingston, Jamaica. “We are in the middle of getting everything done. We have staff coming on board to really start pushing to getting that done. I think by the end of this year we will be well on our way. We want

to congratulate the government for sponsoring these games,” Miller said. “Usually these games are four years in the making, but the government took it on 18 months out and everything is going well. All of the 70 countries have confirmed their participation and this will be the biggest games ever held in the Bahamas and it will be the largest Commonwealth Youth Games ever held with two new sports being introduced – beach soccer and beach volleyball.” The extensive list of international sporting events on the calendar for the Bahamas also includes the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, the IAAF World Relays, the PureSilk Bahamas Classic, the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships, the Battle 4 Atlantis, Popeyes Bahamas Bowl to name a few.

T

he restoration efforts from the effects of Hurricane Matthew have presented several challenges for the organisers of the Snipe World Championships Masters. However, the event continues this week at the Royal Nassau Sailing Club. According to Regatta Chairman George Kelly, inclement weather has just been one of the limitations that have restricted the series to just one race in the last two days. “Over the last 10 days we have had lots of challenges but it has been an amazing effort from everyone involved for us to be able to pull through. After Matthew we had no dock, we had about 30 inches of water in the place, we had to replace all the refrigeration systems, one of our snack bars demolished, among other things. We had just 10 days to turn everything around and we’re doing the best we can,” he said. The leaders of the field following the opening race are Ralph Rosa (Skipper) and Alfredo Rovere (Crew) of Brazil. According to a press release issued by the organisation Per the SCIRA rules, the Snipe World Masters cannot be raced in winds greater than 15 knots. “That has been a challenge this week with the tropical disturbances teasing our area. The fleet was able

to get one race in Tuesday morning. During the race, wind speed is constantly measured from the committee boat with a handheld device. There were tense moments for Fernando de Cardenas, the primary race officer, when the wind speeds inched close to 15 knots when measured to the tenth of a knot. Tuesday afternoon and yesterday races were postponed due to high winds. Forecasts call for lower wind speeds for the remainder of the week so the race committee hopes to be able to hold six more races as scheduled.” With calmer winds expected, the regatta will continue 10:30am today with two races on the schedule. The same format will follow Friday to determine seeding headed into the final race day on Saturday. Approximately 70 competitors and staff are taking part in the event. “They’re quite amazed that we have still been able to do it and we have been amazed and grateful that we could go ahead and do it. It has really been a great experience thus far and would have been a real disaster if we had to cancel. Miami did offer to take it, we considered that but we just thought that the people really want to visit the Bahamas and compete in our waters,” Kelly said. “So far even though we have only had one race, it was a good race and we had a nice clean start, which for the first race is unusual. We also got the juniors involved and led out the countries in

INCLEMENT weather has been a challenge for the organisers but the big event continues this week at Royal Nassau Sailing Club. the opening ceremonies. It gives them something to aim for and one day they’ll be in that similar position representing the Bahamas.” In addition to this year’s Snipe Masters, the Bahamas has become a sought after venue for many international events in the sport, including the Star Sailors League Final and 5.5 World Championships. “It’s always good for the Bahamas to have these events. We have some of the best waters in the world and we should have boats on the water every week. Star

Sailors League will be here in November going through with their plans although the Yacht Club is in the same position as we were and their docks are being rebuilt. Also, the 5.5 World Championships will be here in January in 2017,” Kelley said. “The more the Bahamas does the more we’re known around the world in this sport.” Nine countries are represented at the event. The Bahamas has a trio of boats in the fleet, including Jimmie (skipper) and Lori Lowe (crew), Robert Dunk-

ley (skipper) and Michelle Lakin (crew) and Gavin McKinney (skipper) and Adam Moorman (crew). Skipper Oscar Gonzalez Urquia from Argentina is the oldest competitor at 85. Skipper Terry Timm from the United States of America is the second oldest. Crewing for Timm is Bahamian junior sailor Brandon Sands from the settlement of Cherokee Sound in Abaco. The Snipe, a one design boat, became official in 1931. Despite class having non-Olympic status, it re-

mains strong with 31 active Snipe countries and over 30,800 boats having been built. The Masters World Championship, where the Id Crook Memorial Trophy is awarded to the winning skipper and crew, is held every two years in even numbered years. It was opened to boats where the skipper had to be at least 50 years of age in the year of the regatta and the combined age of skipper and crew had to be at least 80 years in the year of the regatta.

Buddy Hield projected to win Rookie of the Year By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net ACCORDING to one of NBA. com’s most decorated writers of the past two decades, expect Buddy Hield to have a major impact on the New Orleans Pelicans this season and lead the 2016 rookie class. Scott Howard-Cooper’s “NBA Rookie Ladder” projects Hield to begin the season as his early season favourite to win the Kia Rookie of the Year Award. “This sets up perfectly for Hield. He is a shooter who arrived just before the Pelicans parted with Ryan Anderson and Eric Gordon, first and second on the team in 3-point attempts last season. And now Jrue Holiday (taking care of his sick wife, Lauren)

and Tyreke Evans (knee surgery, blood clot) will miss at least the start of the season. Meanwhile, Anthony Davis is scheduled to be back sometime around opening night after spraining an ankle in exhibition play, a return that would help Hield get better looks,” Howard-Cooper said. In his first preseason start, Hield finished with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists in the Pelicans’ 96-89 loss to the Atlanta Hawks Tuesday at Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a bounce back performance for Hield who went scoreless last Wednesday in the Pelicans’ final game of the NBA Global Game series in Beijing, China. The 6’4” 215 pound guard opened the preseason with 19 points in his debut, followed by games scoring 18 and 14 respec-

tively. Through three games he shot 6-15 from three-point range and 20-38 from the field. In the two games since he has shot 0-8 from three-point range and 5-19 from the field. New Orleans (1-4) concludes its six-game preseason schedule tonight on the road against the Orlando Magic. “Experience does not translate. Of the last 10 top newcomers, six were in the NBA after one-and-done college fly-bys and two stuck it out for two seasons while only two stayed the full four, 2012-13 winner Damian Lillard and Brandon Roy from 2006-07. The last two years, Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns both went directly from NCAA freshmen to Rookie of the Year with the Timberwolves, with runaway victories in the

ballot box. But it is impossible to ignore that two of the leading contenders for 2016-17, Hield and Kris Dunn in his attempt at a Minnesota three-peat, are arguably the most NBA-ready of the prospects,” the article said. “The Hield edge is that he combines background – 22 years old, four seasons at Oklahoma, sixth in the NCAA in three-point percentage as a senior – with present-day opportunity. The Pelicans need air cover if they are to make defences pay for sending extra bodies at Anthony Davis, and they need it just because Hield, the No. 6 pick in June, will have the chance for an immediate impact.” Howard-Cooper has covered the NBA since 1988. His Rookie Ladder column updates power rankings for rookies throughout the season on NBA.com

WEEK 7 Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers SANNIE: As much as I love Black Ink Crew Chicago and am super excited about the new season, the Bears have only won one game, I have a season to win. PACKERS over Bears RENALDO: Ok she’s right. Black Ink Crew Chicago is amazing. Having a quarterback battle between Brian Hoyer and Jay Cutler is not. It’s a Thursday night game, the uniforms will be horrible so will the product on the field...but the home team always wins. PACKERS over Bears New York Giants at Los Angeles Rams SANNIE: Chal, apparently Odell Beckham Jr is dating Rihanna now. This man really gets around but if he landed with Rhi Rhi, he must be doing something right. GIANTS over Rams RENALDO: There’s a battle brewing in the Giants locker room and at some point it’ll spill out onto the field. I’m more interested in OBJ’s sidelined antics with

the kicking net, which is actually the most compelling part of their season. Will OBJ and the net take their relationship to the next level? Will they have a kid? Will another sleazy net infringe on their relationship? Will anyone notice that Jeff Fisher is .500 for the 50th time in his life? GIANTS over Rams Minnesota Vikings at Philadelphia Eagles SANNIE: I have FULLY caught up with the Vikings!! And I love it! I secretly wish I was born in that era (not really) VIKINGS over Eagles RENALDO: I’m all in with the Vikings until Adrian Peterson says otherwise. Just as people start to look at the exit signs on the Carson Wentz bandwagon, he goes up against a possible all time great defence that plays every game like they were upset their team traded a first and fourth round draft pick for Sam Bradford. VIKINGS over Eagles Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins SANNIE: So the Dolphins apparently got skills and if they can’t beat the Steelers they can definitely

beat the Bills. DOLPHINS over Bills RENALDO: I’m so sick of this team making me believe in them. I was out, I was ready to be done, I was ready to enjoy football objectively...then they had to go ahead and beat the Steelers. Now I have to believe in this team again. Now I’m forced to rationalise how this defence can have that same performance against lesser teams, I’m forced to think that offensive line can actually play. I’ll never get out, not without help. DOLPHINS over Bills Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals SANNIE: Seriously? The Browns haven’t won one game? Is this intentional? Is there a prize for being bad? BENGALS over Browns RENALDO: The Cavs won the NBA Finals, the Indians are in the World Series...what lies next for the Browns? Lots and lots of Ls. BENGALS over Browns Baltimore Ravens at New York Jets SANNIE: It seems like the only team the Jets are better than is the Browns. It’s just sad. RAVENS over Jets

RENALDO: The Jets are moving forward with Geno Smith as the quarterback. The Jets are moving backward as an organisation. RAVENS over Jets New Orleans Saints at Kansas City Chiefs SANNIE: The Saints beat up on my Cam last week AND I’m kind of mad I was supposed to be in New Orleans next week… and that got cancelled. So, I hate New Orleans right now (Sorry Buddy). CHIEFS over Saints RENALDO: Andy Reid losing weight is unsettling, almost as unsettling as the Saints’ defence. CHIEFS over Saints Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans SANNIE: Umm I don’t know much about either team, so I’m going to choose the Titans because they’ve lost less games. That’s logical. TITANS over Colts

RENALDO: At this point nobody would blame Jim Irsay if he made the Colts offence go play both ways. Make Andrew Luck a linebacker, TY Hilton and Phillip Dorsett defensive backs - what’s the worst that could happen? They give up 35 points instead of their standard 30. TITANS over Colts Washington Racial Slurs at Detroit Lions SANNIE: I chose Washington last week because of all their help to the Bahamas after the Hurricane Matthew and they actually won. I’m going to continue to ride with them (for now). RACIAL SLURS over Lions RENALDO: Matthew Stafford is having his best season ever... without Calvin Johnson. That makes no sense. It’s like the Redskins being better without RGIII. Never mind, that happened. LIONS over Racial Slurs

to hurt me - but I am going to choose the Raiders. My only reason is because Eddie is actually at this game and he may bring them some luck. (One and one time only Duke of Dowdswell) RAIDERS over Jags RENALDO: The Vegas Raiders are on the way. This won’t end well...it can’t end well. RAIDERS over Jags San Diego Chargers at Atlanta Falcons SANNIE: The countdown is on to Real Housewives! Are you excited? This season looks like it is going to be EPIC and drama filled. FALCONS over Chargers

Oakland Raiders at Jacksonville Jaguars

RENALDO: One thing is certain, the Chargers will be down by four with less than a minute left, Phillip Rivers will leave the exasperated. FALCONS over Chargers

SANNIE: This is going

‘With only a two-game lead, Mrs Dorsett can be caught’ I WENT 9-6 last week, could have been worse I suppose. I’m now 53-39 in sole possession of second place in the picks standings, and with only a two game lead, Mrs Dorsett can be caught. • Here’s who I like this week: Bears vs Packers The home team wins on Thursday Night Football so I’ve been told, seems to be right too. Packers 27 - Bears 23 Giants vs Rams This game is being played in London, Odell Beckham Jr taps in to inner ‘Freddie Mercury’ and gives a command performance across the pond. Giants 27 - Rams 24 (OT) Saints vs Chiefs I don’t know which Saints team will show up, I do

know the Chiefs are tough at home. Chiefs 31 - Saints 24 Colts vs Titans The Colts’ defence sucks. Mariota and Murray are for real. Upset bird flies high in this one. Titans at home. Titans 24 - Colts 23 Vikings vs Eagles Sam Bradford gets his revenge, the growing pains continue for Eagles rookie QB Carson Wentz, the Eagles drop their third game in a row as the ‘Vikes’ remain undefeated. Vikings 24 - Eagles 20 Browns vs Bengals The Bengals cure all that ails them at home, with a division victory over the Browns. Bengals 34 - Browns 20 Redskins vs Lions The Redskins win their fifth straight on the road, in a shootout with the Lions.

Redskins 34 - Lions 31 Raiders at Jaguars Just when you think you can trust the Raiders, they have a 1pm game on the East coast. The Raiders haven’t been able to get over this hurdle recently, so it’s the Jags at home. Jaguars 31 - Raiders 27 Bills vs Dolphins The Bills win their fifth straight game with a big division win in the road. The Dolphins are still drunk off of their last win. Bills 27 - Dolphins 20

Ravens vs Jets New QB for the Jets, Geno Smith starts for the Jets this week. Ravens have been inconsistent lately. Coin flip .... Ravens on the road. Ravens 23 - Jets 20 Bucs vs 49ers Kaepernick starts again this week for the 49ers, Jameis Winston and the Bucs come to town off of the bye. Coin flip... looks like this is a week for the ‘road underdogs.’ Bucs 23 - 49ers 20 (OT)

Chargers vs Falcons Tons of points are going up in this one, the Falcons at home have one or two more weapons. This should be a good game to watch. The ‘Dirty Birds’ soar in the ‘Dirty South.’ Falcons 34 - Chargers 30 Patriots vs Steelers The injury bug struck again last weekend in the NFL, Steeler QB Ben Roethlisberger was bitten by it, torn MCL out seven weeks. ‘Tom Terrific’ continues to enjoy being back, he’s terrorising everybody he crosses paths with since his release . Patriots 24 - Steelers 20 Seahawks vs Cards The Cards are tough at home, and RB David Johnson is the real deal. Cards at home in a nailbiter ! Cards 23 - Seahawks 20 Texans vs Broncos Texans QB Brock Oes-

Even the Packers can get it right against the bumbling Bears THE aftermath of Hurricane Matthew kept me from commentating in my picks column last week. The week before, with the storm approaching the Bahamas, the picks were done a day early. Today, normal service is resumed ... before vacation time finally arrives, forcing my next two columns to be brief and to the point. This week, it is all about the breakdown. My Pats are on their way to 6-1, no debate, that is a definite. Big Ben is out again, it is time for a smarter plan in Pittsburgh. And the Vikings and that new age “Purple Eaters” defence is out for vengeance. Welcome to week 7: check your expectations at the door! Chicago Bears (1-5) @ Green Bay Packers (3-2) The Packers are in trouble. While their defence has shown signs, the lack of offensive depth and skill beyond the super capabilities of Aaron Rodgers are starting to show ... tremendously. This week, the scheduling gods have opted to bless the team with a “get right” opportunity, as the boys from Lambeau welcome the Chicago Bears. The Bears have done little in the way of im-

proving this year and the questions about Jay Cutler have only intensified. Packers are in for a big night. PACKERS New York Giants (3-3) @ Los Angeles Rams (3-3) Exactly how many London games are we getting this season? No seriously? I need to know because I need six more than whatever number was originally quoted by the league. There is nothing better than early morning football on Sunday. This week, we have Giants v Rams. Both team are 3-3, and are looking to make a move up the wildcard ranks. While it is still early in the season, this game could play a huge role in determining what the NFC playoffs look like come season’s end. GIANTS New Orleans Saints (2-3) @ Kansas City Chiefs (3-2) The Kansas City Chiefs are home with the better defence. The answer here is clear. weeks, he has managed to remain a bright spot. This week we see him in his biggest test as he squares off against one of the league’s best defences statistically, and the league’s most skilled based on the eye test. VIKINGS

Minnesota Vikings (5-0) @ Philadelphia Eagles (3-2) This game has me upset. Every so often, there is a crop of young players that comes along and reinforces your belief that the game is in good hands. The 2016 Draft has offered us several such athletes, chief among them are the Eagles’ starting QB, Carson Wentz. I want Wentz to be good. I want him to become a star. And he has been that and so much more for the most part of this young season. While his team has struggled over the last two

Cleveland Browns (0-6) @ Cincinnati Bengals (2-4) No discussion here. The Browns are the worst team in the league and their play on the field will certainly show it on Sunday. BENGALS

Denver Broncos RENALDO: This game is messy. For John Elway it’s like watching your ugly ex-

girlfriend in a bad abusive relationship. You’re happy you dodged that bullet but you still feel bad for her.

Washington Redskins (4-2) @ Detroit Lions (3-3) Two things are certain: the Lions can score and the Redskins are a gameto-game team. In a league where parody is the word of choice, there is virtually no difference (skill wise) between these two teams. LIONS

Oakland Raiders (4-2) @ Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) The Raiders are by far the better team. RAIDERS Buffalo Bills (4-2) @ Miami Dolphins (2-4) The Dolphins are coming off a big performance against the Steelers last week. With confidence in tow, they square off against Buffalo. The Bills are winners of four straight, including games against the Patriots and a dominating win over the 49ers. Five is in view. BILLS Baltimore Ravens (3-3) @ New York Jets (1-5) Welcome back Geno Smith. Sorry, but the Ravens await you RAVENS Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-3) @ San Francisco 49ers (1-5) In match-ups this bad, to the home team goes the nod. 49ERS San Diego Chargers (2-4) @ Atlanta Falcons (4-2) Renaldo has asked me not to overlook or undervalue the Falcons, but he has also picked the Charg-

ers to win their division. He doesn’t really understand football. I don’t get that, as at one point he was a really good QB. FALCONS New England Patriots (5-1) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) The Steelers will be without Big Ben for at least the next month after a reported meniscus tear. The Patriots are working themselves into playoff form. PATRIOTS Seattle Seahawks (4-1) @ Arizona Cardinals (3-3) The Seahawks sideline got really intense last week v the Cardinals. It is clear that the team is working to get the intensity it had a couple of years ago back. This week they are on the road against a big time division rival. SEAHAWKS Houston Texans (4-2) @ Denver Broncos (4-2) Brock Osweiler is back in Denver this week. I think that Denver defence remembers all his weaknesses. RAFAEL NADAL INAUGURATES TENNIS ACADEMY IN HOMETOWN MALLORCA, Spain (AP) — Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal inaugurated the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar on his home island of Mallorca on Wednesday. Nadal was accompanied by long-time rival Roger Federer at the event in his hometown of Manacor. “Today is the day when we finally launch something that has taken a lot of years of work and dedication,” Nadal said. “I still have years of tennis ahead of me, there is a future and this academy is part of this future.” The academy, which opened for business in June, combines tennis training with schooling for promising players from the age of 12-18. Among its goals is to help its students who don’t turn professional after leaving the academy to find scholarships to study at universities in the United States. It is run by Rafael’s coach and uncle, Toni Nadal.

Wrist injury ends Navarro’s bid to reach WTA Finals MOSCOW (AP) — A wrist injury killed off Carla Suarez Navarro’s hopes of qualifying for the WTA Finals as the Spanish player retired while facing Australian Daria Gavrilova in the Kremlin Cup yesterday. Needing to win the Kremlin Cup to qualify for the elite competition in Singapore this weekend, Suarez Navarro was down 6-4, 3-0 to Gavrilova in the second round when she retired. Gavrilova, who was born in

Moscow, will play seventh-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarter-finals, after she beat Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic 6-1, 6-4. Top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova remains on course to claim the last WTA Finals place after she beat France’s Alize Cornet 6-4, 7-5 in their second-round match. The Russian was in strong form, landing 76 per cent of her first serves, and next plays Hungarian Timea Babos, seeded ninth.

Kuznetsova will qualify for the WTA Finals only if she wins the Kremlin Cup. Otherwise, the place goes to Britain’s Johanna Konta. The fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine eased past Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-2, 6-2 and into the quarter-finals. Svitolina next plays 18-year-old Croatian Ana Konjuh, who had a second-round walkover when Russian qualifier Anna Blinkova was unable to play.

Another seeded player went out as Russian Elena Vesnina, seeded fifth, was beaten 7-5, 6-0 by German Julia Goerges. In the men’s event, seventhseeded Paolo Lorenzi became the first seeded player to go out, losing to fellow Italian Fabio Fognini 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 in the second round. Eighth-seeded Russian Andrei Kuznetsov was tested in his first-round match as he won 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 against Argentina’s Guido Pella.

KARLOVIC, ZVEREV ADVANCE AT THE STOCKHOLM OPEN STOCKHOLM (AP) — Veteran Ivo Karlovic needed three sets to beat 18-year-old Mikael Ymer of Sweden in the second round of the Stockholm Open on Wednesday. Ymer, who upset Fernando Verdasco in the first round for his first ATP tour victory, thrilled the home crowd by winning the first set but ultimately couldn’t match the power of his Croatian opponent. Karlovic hit 16 aces to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in 1 hour, 47 minutes. Alexander Zverev of Germany is also through to the quarterfinals after beating Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 6-4. In first-round action, last year’s Stockholm Open finalist Jack Sock of the United States beat Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro and Jurgen Zopp of Estonia also advanced to the second round.

GASQUET, CUEVAS INTO EUROPEAN OPEN QUARTERFINALS ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) — Third-seeded Richard Gasquet of France was untroubled on his serve as be beat Inigo Cervantes 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the European Open yesterday. Gasquet won 92 per cent of his points on first serve, did not face a single break point and broke

the Spaniard’s serve three times in a lopsided match. Gasquet next faces either fifthseeded countryman Gilles Simon or Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff. Joining Gasquet in the last eight were fourth-seeded Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay and Italian Andreas Seppi.

Cuevas beat Slovak qualifier Jozef Kovalik 6-4, 7-6 (4), firing 11 aces in their second-round match. Seppi beat Dutchman Robin Haase 7-5, 7-5 and next faces second-seeded Ferrer or Britain player Kyle Edmund. In remaining first-round action, Simon beat Germany quali-

fier Yannick Maden, 6-3, 6-2. Simon, a losing semifinalist to Andy Murray at the Shanghai Masters last weekend, was ruthless in converting five of six break-point chances. Wildcard entry Steve Darcis of Belgium rallied to beat Benoit Paire 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-4.

Russian weightlifter loses 2012 Olympic silver in dope case LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Russian weightlifter Apti Aukhadov was stripped of his silver medal from the 2012 London Olympics on Tuesday after testing positive for steroids in a reanalysis of his doping samples. Aukhadov tested positive for turinabol and drostanolone and was retroactively disqualified from the London Games, the International Olympic Committee said. Aukhadov, who is from the Chechnya region and was 19 at the time of the London Games, was ordered to return his silver medal in the 85-kilogram division. He is the latest athlete to be officially sanctioned by the IOC following retesting of more than 1,000 doping samples from the London Olympics and 2008 Beijing Games. The IOC stores samples for 10 years so they can be retested when improved methods become available. The IOC has reported 98 positive cases from recent testing of London and Beijing samples. The IOC ordered the international weightlifting federation to adjust the London weightlifting results and consider any further sanctions against Aukhadov, who could face a ban of at least two years. His gold medals from the 2013 world championships and Eu-

ropean championships could also be annulled by the IWF. If the IOC reallocates the London Olympic medals, Iran’s Kianoush Rostami is in line to be promoted to the silver, and Tarek Yehia of Egypt to the bronze. The gold medal was won by Adrian Zielinski of Poland, who was barred from this year’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics after failing a drug test ahead of the games. An IOC disciplinary commission report said Aukhadov initially replied that he was “shocked” by the retest result and did not accept the finding. However, he did not attend the opening and retesting of the backup “B’’ sample, or attend a hearing, or put up any further defense. “Beyond alleging to be shocked, the athlete does not bring forth any explanation in respect of the fact that two different anabolic steroids were found in his sample,” the three-man panel said. The IOC also announced Tuesday that Ukrainian pole vaulter Maksym Mazuryk was disqualified from the London Games, where he finished 18th, after testing positive for turinabol in a reanalysis of his stored samples. The IOC disciplinary panel said Mazuryk was tested in Kiev in July 2012 before the games. He accepted the positive finding and did not request a retesting of the “B’’ sample.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Seimone Augustus was a 13-year-old girl when she watched the Houston Comets win the first WNBA championship in 1997. The Comets would win the first four titles in the league, proving to basketball-loving girls across the country that there was a place for them to pursue their dreams. And Augustus couldn’t get enough of them. Two decades later, Augustus and the Minnesota Lynx stand on the precipice of joining those trailblazing women. A victory over the Los Angeles Sparks in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals tonight would give the Lynx their fourth title, tying them with the Comets for most in league history. “That’s just mind-boggling to me,” Augustus said. “We grew up watching the Houston Comets and those wonderful women the kind of set the precedent for what WNBA basketball is all about. They’ve motivated and inspired us. Now we could be the new Houston Comets of this era if we do what we need to do. They know it will not be easy. Through the first four games of the series, the Sparks and Lynx have pushed each other as far as they can go, which is exactly what the league hoped would happen when it changed the playoff format to seed teams based on record and not geography. Los Angeles won Game 1 in Minnesota and Game 3 back home. The Lynx have responded to each loss with a victory of their own to find themselves right back where they were a year ago — needing a win in Game 5 at Target Center to bring home a title. Last year the Lynx dispatched the Indiana Fever in front of 17,000 fans, then partied all night long at

Another raucous crowd is expected this time around in what would be the crowning achievement for the league’s model franchise, first back-toback championships in the league since the Sparks repeated in 2002. “You couldn’t ask for anything more,” said Lynx star Maya Moore, who scored 31 points in Game 4 to keep Minnesota alive. “It’s been definitely a dramatic series and one that will go down as one of the best, I think.” The Lynx have been here five times in the last six years, but this has been their most difficult finals test. League MVP Nneka Oqwumike, Candace Parker and Kristi Toliver present a star-studded trio to rival Minnesota’s, and they have been every bit their equal through four games. The Sparks are chasing ghosts of their own. A victory tonight would give them their first championship since Lisa Leslie led them to their second in a row in 2002, and that may have played into their de-

feat on Sunday. They were so eager to finish the series on their home floor that coach Brian Agler said they have turned their focus in the wrong direction, and it cost them. “I think everyone out there was playing to win a championship and not to beat the team we were playing,” Ogwumike said. “I told coach yesterday in the airport that’s exactly how I felt when he put it in that perspective. Having that with a good balance of focus and awareness and effort is exactly what we need.” Afterward, Lakers legend Magic Johnson addressed the crestfallen players, telling them to put the loss behind them and be ready because the series was not over. “You could hear a pin drop,” Toliver said. “Everybody was just really locked in to what he was saying. When he’s talking, everybody listens and that was exactly what we needed to hear in that moment because in that moment, your emotions are all over the place. He kind of just brought everybody back in and refocused everyone.”

Guardiola no match for Messi: Barcelona beats Man City 4-0 By ANDREW DAMPF AP Sports Writer ROME (AP) — After all the hype about Pep Guardiola returning to face his former club, Lionel Messi made sure it was no contest. Messi scored a hat trick to deal a humbling defeat to his former mentor yesterday, leading Barcelona to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League. Messi sped through City’s defence and around former Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo before giving the hosts the 17th-minute lead in a Group C match that both teams finished with 10 men. It only got worse for Bravo, who was sent off in the second half for using his hands to block a shot outside the area after his poor pass gifted the ball to Luis Suarez. Messi struck again in the 61st and 69th to take his total to 89 goals in Europe’s top club competition. The Argentina forward is second only to Cristiano Ronaldo’s 98. Barcelona’s substitute defender Jeremy Mathieu was sent off in the 73rd minute for a second yellow card. Neymar rounded off the win from a pass by Messi, moments after the Brazil striker had missed a penalty that Messi had earned. Guardiola lost for the second time upon returning to Camp Nou where he established himself as one of the world’s top managers by leading Barcelona to 14 titles from 2008-12. The former Barcelona midfielder coached Bayern Munich when the German side lost 3-0 at the Catalan side in the Champions League semi-finals two years ago,

when Messi scored twice. Barcelona leads Group C with a perfect nine points, City has four and Borussia Moenchengladbach three after its 2-0 win at last-place Celtic, which has one point. • Here’s a look at what else happened in the Champions League yesterday: GROUP A Mesut Ozil fired a second-half hat trick as Arsenal took a big step toward the knockout stage with a 6-0 rout of Bulgarian champion Ludogorets. The north London side, which is now unbeaten since the opening game of the season two months ago, tops the group with seven points. Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Alex OxladeChamberlain had put Arsenal up 3-0 before Ozil took over. Paris Saint-Germain also has seven points after its 3-0 home win over Basel, which is level on one point with Ludogorets. Angel Di Maria ended his goal drought at just the right moment and striker Edinson Cavani continued his scoring streak as PSG overcame a poor start at the Parc des Princes. Having gone 17 games without a goal for club and country, Di Maria pounced five minutes before halftime and Brazilian winger Lucas slotted in his seventh goal of the season in the 62nd before Cavani added a late penalty. GROUP B Vincent Aboubakar scored twice as Besiktas beat Napoli 3-2 to deny the Italian club a chance of advancing from the group stage in record time.

Aboubakar, a Cameroon international on loan from Porto, scored the winner four minutes from time after having also restored Besiktas’ lead late in the first half. It was the Turkish side’s first win in the competition since 2009. If Napoli had won, it could have become the first team in Champions League history to advance from its group after just three matches. Now, Napoli has just a one-point lead over Besiktas, with Benfica two points back after its 2-0 win at Dynamo Kiev. After Adriano’s opener for Besiktas, Dries Mertens and Manolo Gabbiadini scored temporary equalisers for Napoli. In Kiev, Eduardo Salvio converted a penalty and Franco Servi also scored in Benfica’s first win of the campaign. GROUP C In Glasgow, Borussia Moenchengladbach capitalised on two defensive errors by Kolo Toure to beat Celtic 2-0, earning the German team its first points. Toure’s first error came when he tried to shepherd the ball over the byline for a goal kick in the 57th. Andre Hahn wrapped his foot around the defender and hooked the ball back into the area, where Lars Stindl drove a shot through goalkeeper Craig Gordon’s legs from an acute angle. Hahn doubled the lead in the 77th after Toure’s pass near the halfway line was intercepted. Hahn sprinted through the middle and toe-poked a finish high into the net from just inside the area, just as Toure got back to attempt a lunging tackle.

On Merritt: Indians head to World Series, top Jays in the ALCS By NOAH TRISTER AP Baseball Writer TORONTO (AP) — A most unlikely pitching performance helped put a most unexpected team into the World Series. Rookie Ryan Merritt coolly delivered a lead to the Andrew Miller-led bullpen and the Cleveland Indians won their first pennant since 1997, blanking Toronto 3-0 yesterday in Game 5 of the AL Championship Series. Cleveland, which has never hosted a World Series opener, will play Game 1 at

Progressive Field on Tuesday night against either the Chicago Cubs or Los Angeles Dodgers. The Indians will try to boost what’s already been a magical year in Cleveland after LeBron James and the Cavaliers earned the city’s first sports championship since 1964. The Indians’ title drought dates to 1948. The Dodgers led the Cubs 2-1 going into Game 4 of the NLCS last night. Cleveland didn’t play either team this season. With all of 11 major league innings under his belt, Merritt took the

mound and looked just like a seasoned vet. The 24-year-old lefty retired the first 10 batters and allowed only two hits before being pulled after 4 1/3 innings. Then it was up to Cleveland’s tireless relievers to hold a three-run lead. Miller again did most of the heavy lifting, pitching 2 2/3 innings, and Cody Allen pitched the ninth for the save. Winner Bryan Shaw worked an inning before Miller came in. Carlos Santana and Coco Crisp homered for the Indians.

BARCELONA’s Lionel Messi celebrates after scoring his side’s third goal during yesterday’s Champions League Group C match against Manchester City. (AP) GROUP D Bayern Munich dispelled any doubts about its commitment by ending a threematch winless run with a comfortable 4-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven. Thomas Mueller opened the scoring in the 13th, Joshua Kimmich doubled

the lead in the 21st, before Luciano Narsingh pulled one back for the visitors. Robert Lewandowski scored in the 59th, just as PSV seemed to be making a comeback and Arjen Robben provided the insurance in the 84th. Bayern has six points,

three behind group leader Atletico Madrid, which won 1-0 in Rostov. PSV and FC Rostov have one point each. In Rostov, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco fired in the winner shortly after the hour mark for Atletico, last season’s runner-up.

Jury clears NBA’s Derrick Rose in rape lawsuit By BRIAN MELLEY Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jurors cleared NBA star Derrick Rose and two friends yesterday in a lawsuit that accused them of gang raping his ex-girlfriend when she was incapacitated from drugs or alcohol. The jury reached the verdict in federal court in Los Angeles after hearing dramatically different accounts of the August 2013 sexual encounter. Rose says he’s thankful that the jury rejected the lawsuit. He said in a statement to The Associated Press that it was important to prove he did not do what he was accused of, even though he had to share private details of his personal life. “I am thankful that the jury understood and agreed with me,” his statement said. “This experience and my sensitivity to it was deep. I am ready to put this behind me and focus on my family and career.” Jurors later posed for photographs with Rose one at a time in the courthouse lobby. One of the two men among the eight jurors who identified himself only by his first name and age,

Jared, 25, said the panel tried to look at the case in the plaintiff’s favour but in the end could not believe her and felt her tears were not genuine. “It felt like she was playing us,” he said. Neither side denied the three men had sex with the woman, but the issue was whether she consented or was too intoxicated to do so. Defence lawyers tarred the woman as a liar who tried to sway jurors through her tears to get at Rose’s fortune. They claimed she was angry he had dumped her and she set him up and brought the lawsuit in hopes of a big payoff. The woman’s lawyer called the men “sexual deviants” and says they conspired to gang rape her after she was drunk and incapable of consenting to sex. Rose was in court, looking down as the verdict was read. As soon as the first question was answered by the jury, his attorney got up and shook the hand of each of the three defendants. “All three men were innocent from Day 1,” Rose’s attorney, Mark Baute, said. “We’re very happy that the system worked.” The woman’s attorney, Waukeen McCoy, said he will explore

appeal options. “I think it’s a shame for women, for this country that a celebrity can come into court and slutshame a woman like my client,” McCoy said. Though the accuser’s reaction could not be seen as the verdict was read, McCoy said she was devastated and did not understand how jurors could reach their conclusion. The woman, who became emotional and trembled while testifying, had sought $21.5 million when she filed suit, but her attorney did not put a price on the case Tuesday during closing arguments, saying it was up to the jury. Rose’s lawyer said the future of the Knicks point guard and his whole family was at stake because of a morals clause in his player contract and an endorsement deal with Adidas. Baute urged jurors to recognise the suit as a “hoax and a joke” and not even award $20 because that could destroy Rose’s career and trigger financial ruin for the star and the extended family and friends he had pulled out of poverty from Chicago’s south side with his talent on the court. Lawyers sparred for nearly three hours during the bitter clos-

ing arguments. The woman’s lawyer said the 30-year-old college student was not a gold digger and was seeking accountability for what was morally and legally wrong. He said the men had never apologised or shown any remorse and said their behaviour was reprehensible enough to trigger punitive damages beyond any compensation. “The three men laughed their way home,” attorney McCoy said. The defence portrayed Rose and his childhood pals, Ryan Allen and Randall Hampton, who both work for him, as victims in the case and the lawyers mocked the woman’s lies and demeanour on the witness stand. “This woman has tried to trick people through much of her life, men especially,” attorney Michael Monico said. “Who is she trying to trick in this courtroom, ladies and gentlemen? You. She doesn’t have any evidence, but she can cry.” The Associated Press does not generally name people who say they are victims of sex crimes. Rose, 28, was traded to New York this year after spending seven seasons in his native Chicago, where he won Rookie of the Year

He has been plagued with knee injuries the past few seasons and is in the final year of a five-year deal that will pay him $21.3 million.
