Bahamas tops medal podium after strong opening night By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net IT WAS a strong opening night performance for Team Bahamas at the XXI Caribbean Island Swimming Championships as the team looked to set the tone for a possible historic meet. The Bahamas topped the medal podium numerous times on day one and set several new CISC records last night at the Betty Kelly Kenning National Swim Complex. Joanna Evans and Olympian Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace lived up to expectations with gold medal swims and CISC records in their respective events. Evans took the first medal for the Bahamas on the night with a finish of 8:40.60 seconds in the 800m Free while Vanderpool-

BUDDY HIELD AND PELICANS ALL SET FOR NBA SUMMER LEAGUE By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE fanfare of the draft and introduction to his new team have subsided, now the next step on the NBA journey for Buddy Hield will be the proving ground for all rookies and players still in search of a roster spot. Hield and the New Orleans Pelicans will compete in the Samsung NBA Summer League hosted July 8-18 in Las Vegas Nevada. Some of the league’s top prospects of the future will invade the Thomas and Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the University of Nevada Las Vegas campus. Hield, the sixth overall pick in the draft, will headline the Pelicans roster alongside 33rd overall pick Cheick Diallo. The Pels roster at the moment also includes NBA D-League veterans Larry Drew II, Nick Minnerath and Michale Kyser. Drew starred for New Orleans in last year’s Vegas Summer League and spent the year with Monaco in France. Other noteworthy players on the roster include former North Carolina State guard Anthony “Cat” Barber, and one of the fastest growing prospects out of China, He Tienju. Hield and the Pels will open Summer league play Friday, July 8 in a matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers and second overall pick Brandon Ingram at 10:30pm local time. In game two they will face the Utah Jazz, Sunday, July 10 at 8pm local time. They will complete the prelims against the Sacramento Kings, Monday July 11 at 10pm local time. Teams will compete in three preliminary games before being seeded in a tournament that leads to the Championship Game on July 18. Each team will play at least five games in Las Vegas. The 22-year-old Hield said that going into the draft, he wanted to be picked by New Orleans – as did his agent and most importantly, his mother – for a variety of reasons, but the presence of three-time AllStar Anthony Davis was at the top of the list. “He’s a special talent,” Hield said of the 23-yearold Davis. “He’s a guy who can score the ball in a variety of ways. I just can’t wait to talk to him and learn from him. He’s going to be the guy to help him and space the floor for him and

Wallace took the 100m Fly in 1:00.49. Other senior members of the team were able to lead the way for the 68-member Bahamian contingent with the 1550m/800m Free, 200m Breat, 100m Fly and Mixed Relay 200m Free on the schedule. Matthew Lowe took gold in the 1500 Free in a CISC record setting time of 16:22.01, while Laura Morely won the 200m Breast in 2:39.34. Dustin Tynes won silver in the 200m Breast in 2:20.97 and Vereance Burrows took bronze in the 100m Fly in 55.81. In the 15-17 age group, the Higgs sisters took their familiar spot atop the medal podium in the 200m Breast. Albury Higgs finished first in a CISC record setting time of 2:36.43 while Lilly Higgs was second in 2:42.87.

N’Nhyn Fernander won bronze in the 100m Fly in 57.01. In the Boys 13-14 200m Breast, Izaak Bastian won gold and also set a new CISC record in 2:23.43. Lamar Taylor was the youngest individual medal winner for the Bahamas on the day with gold and a new CISC record in the Boys 1112 100m Fly with a time a 1:04.59. In the Mixed Relay 200m Free, the Bahamas won gold in the 1112, silver in the 15-17 and bronze in the senior divisions. Day two will feature the 200m Free, 50m Fly, 100m Back, 400m Individual Medley and 400m Free Relays. The opening prelims session begins at 9am and the evening session of the finals begins at 5:30pm. Earlier this month, Bahamas Swimming Federation President Algernon Cargill said the 69-member team was comprised

with the goal of winning the CISC at the forefront. “It’s the first time that we are hosting the CISC in the Bahamas and our goal is to win the CISC, so we have put together a balanced team because there are no size limitations for us as the host country,” he said. “So we picked a team that we know will provide us with some quality swims and will have excellent representation here at home as we try to win the CISC title for the first time.” The team features 34 male and 35 females between the ages of 11 and 26. In the past, the Bahamas has placed second and third, but never has the team been as large as this. The largest CISC team to represent the country prior to this year’s meet was about 30 members.

Best swimmers in Caribbean making a splash in Bahamas By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net s the premier swimming meet in the region got underway yesterday, Prime Minister Perry Christie used the platform to discuss the local infrastructural improvements as key to the sport’s development. Mr Christie closed out the opening ceremonies for the XXI Caribbean Island Swimming Championships at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatic Centre with a pledge to improve swimming facilities throughout the country and increase opportunities for prospective athletes. “We are a chain of islands spread over thousands of square miles. A country like the Bahamas has to see the provision of swimming pools as work to be done. It is a work in progress,” he said. “I wish as a declaration and proclamation to indicate that in islands like Abaco, Exuma and

Stingers in 9th edition of summer basketball camp

COACH Stephen Strachan conducts the summer basketball camp.

By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE Stingers Basketball Youth Association is into the 9th edition of their annual summer basketball camp. As it nears a decade, it continues to expand under coach Stephen Strachan with dozens of boys and girls aged 6-18 participating in the camp, hosted at the DW Davis Gymnasium. “This year the growth has been fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised on day one. We are becoming a household name and the brand is building. Parents and kids are recognising it,” Strachan said. “We have coach Tony Hobbs visiting this week and the camp is going tremendously. They are coming in early and staying late to get extra work in. We thank God we have

been growing and we continue to grow.” The camp began June 27 and continues until July 15, hosted 9am to 1pm Monday to Friday. Strachan said that with an experienced staff of coaches and trainers, the coach-to-student ratio is one of the major benefits of the camp. “The numbers are always manageable, our camper per instructor ratio works well. Here you will get a lot of reps, you will learn the skills and fundamentals of basketball and you will become a better player,” he said. In addition to Strachan and his team, this year the camp will be facilitated by Tony Hobbs, head basketball instructor at Bridge Basketball Academy. BEST SWIMMERS IN CARIBBEAN MAKING A SPLASH IN BAHAMAS FROM PAGE 1E other Family Islands, we are on our way with facilities. It’s all about trying to provide equity. We look forward to the day when our athletes for national teams can be recruited from championships in each of our islands.” The local profile of swimming has grown exponentially in recent years with an historic three-year stretch at the CARIFTA level and the rise of Arianna VanderpoolWallace at the senior level. The Bahamas fell just 21 points shy of their third consecutive CARIFTA swimming title last March. After finishing fifth in 2013, the Bahamas won the event for the first time in 2014 and repeated as champions in 2015. Vanderpool-Wallace reached national prominence at the London Olympic Games where she became the first Bahamian to reach an Olympic swimming final. She will return to Rio this year

looking to contend for a medal and will be joined by Joanna Evans who recently qualified with an “A” at the national championships. Before the focus shifted to the pool for the CISC Championships, regional dignitaries weighed in on the significance of the meet during the opening ceremonies. Central American and Caribbean Swimming Federation (CCCAN) President, Felix Calderon, applauded the Bahamas for accepting and excelling in the role as hosts. “I want to express my thanks and heartfelt appreciation to the Bahamas aquatic family for this event. It is an honour for us to be here at the greatest swimming federation of our region. I congratulate president [Algernon] Cargill for taking up this challenge and for his work in developing the Bahamas swimming in the region. To the athletes – in sports the mental game is half of the battle for any victory. You can train,

swim and practice all you want but to become victorious you must stay focused. Always remember to do your best and if you have done your best then you have won.” More more than 20 countries and over 500 swimmers are in town to compete in the four-day event. The biennial swim championships, which got started in 1976, will include teams from Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks and Caicos and the Virgin Islands. “It is my pleasure to welcome you here,” BSF President Algernon Cargill said. “As the host of the 2016 CISC I am excited to be hosting hundreds of athletes to these fantastic championships. This meet is the last qualifier in the world for swimmers to qualify for

the Rio Olympics. The pool is fast, the facilities are great and I know everyone is anxious to jump in the water to accomplish their goals.” While the Bahamas will be out for regional glory with a 69-member team on deck, the majority of the visiting countries will be looking for qualifying performances from their swimmers for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dale Neuburger, Amateur Swimming Union of the Americas (UANA) President said: “The Bahamas Swimming Federation has gathered the manpower and expertise to make this event so special with more than 500 athletes from 33 nations. This is an exciting time. I wish you well. Swim fast, make history and do something special.” This is the first time that the Bahamas will be hosting CISC. Andy Knowles is the head coach of Team Bahamas, which will field full squads in the boys’ and girls’ 11-12, 13-14 and 15-and-over categories.

compete in the Western Conference.” Although Davis will not participate in Summer League, Hield’s performance in Summer League will be perceived as an early indication of the help he can provide to the likely MVP candidate. “I’m willing to learn and pick his brain a little bit,” Hield said of his fellow former Naismith Player of the Year. “He’s been in the league four years now, so he’s well-experienced. He’s a top-five player in the league, maybe soon-to-be MVP. I’m ready to learn from guys and follow his lead. Playing with a superstar like Anthony, and a three-point threat like me, it’s kind of hard to pick your poison. If he’s operating in the post, guys can’t double him. His ability to pick-andpop, catch-and-shoot, that spreads the floor for everybody.” The Las Vegas Summer League is the biggest of the popular trio of NBA leagues, which also includes the Orlando and Utah events. Samsung NBA Summer League 2016 will feature a tournament-style schedule and culminate in a Championship Game for the fourth consecutive year. ESPN and NBA TV will provide non-stop coverage starting on opening day, which will feature six games. Seven of the top 10 selections in NBA Draft are scheduled to make their Samsung NBA Summer League debut. Last year, coach the NBA’s first female coach, Becky Hammon and her San Antonio Spurs were crowned champions of the 11-day, 67-game event, which set records for NBA TV viewership, consumption of digital content on NBA.com and NBA Mobile, total attendance and single-day attendance. This year’s event will feature 11 playoff teams from the 2015-16 NBA season -- including three of the four Conference Finalists in the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State and Toronto Raptors.

STINGERS IN 9TH EDITION OF SUMMER BASKETBALL CAMP FROM PAGE 1E siders itself a “basketball specific player-development company founded in 2012 to serve the needs of individual basketball players by providing them access to great player development.” Hobbs said he seeks to bring those same principles to the Stingers organisation. “I started with two kids in the programme and we grew to 1,400 kids in a matter of four years by teaching basketball the right way. We focus on five core principles – ball control, shot mechanics, quickness and agility, game intelligence and body balance,” Hobbs said, “Each one is a building block to the next stage. We bring a complete structure. Everyday that I’m here we go through a curriculum and it’s a step by step process so we can really see what these kids have.” He added that the specialty of Bridge basketball is taking players from their current level of play and advancing them to the next level. Bridge trainees represent every advanced level of basketball NBA, overseas, Division I collegiate basketball Division II collegiate basketball, Division III collegiate basketball, Nike EYBL, Adidas Grassroot along with other top tournaments around the nation as well as recreation play. Over 30 local AAU clubs have players that specifically develop their technical skills at Bridge Basketball Skills Academy. When he was contacted

The main thing I wanted to do was change their mentality to

know what it takes to earn an opportunity at the next level. I think the Bahamas has some talent, from the young kids to the older level. I think the only difference between a kid that has talent and a kid that does not have talent is who works

the hardest,” Hobbs said. “With Bride basketball my main goal was to give back to the community so these kids can get scholarships. When they get that free education they can come back in help in the community. I think it’s real big to help in

the community because if we can teach the youth to be better than us.” Strachan said the organsation continues to expand its growth following a successful series of summer camps which has also transitioned into a year-long

programme. Approximately 50 student-athletes take part in the programme that continues throughout the school year and Strachan highlighted parent participation as one of its major key contributors.

Which athletes will make up Team Bahamas for this year’s Olympics? By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net SO, who will make up Team Bahamas for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 5-21? While Emily Morley was invited as the first Bahamian to compete in rowing, boxing’s six-member team fell short at the final AIBA World Qualifying Group held recently in Baku, Azerbaijan. No other competitors were considered in tennis, nor did any sailor qualify in sailing, two of the sports the Bahamas had representation in during past Olympics. So that leaves just athletics (track and field) and aquatics (swimming). Both national sporting bodies held their National Championships over the weekend at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre where there was just one outright qualifier in the two sporting bodies. At the Betty Kelly Kenning Swim Complex, the Bahamas Swimming Federation saw collegian Joanna Evans secure her trip to Rio by erasing her own Bahamian and national records by clocking 8 minutes and 33.97 seconds to win the women’s 800 metres freestyle to go under the A qualifying standard. She was sitting on the border with a B qualifying mark and will join Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace, who booked her ticket prior to the nationals in both the women’s 50 and 100m free. At the nationals, Vanderpool-Wallace won both events to once again go under the automatic cut of 25.28 with her time of 24.98 and she dipped under the B time of 56.34, winning in

TOP ATHLETES compete at the Senior Nationals at the TAR national stadium. Photos by Tim Clarke/Tribune Staff 54.52. Two male swimmers, Elvis Burrows and Dustin Tynes, will have another opportunity this week to improve on their respective B qualifying times and surpass the A standards during the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships at the stadium. If they fail, Burrows and Tynes would have to wait until FINA makes their final selection on the remaining swimmers invited to complete the final list of entries for all of the events in Rio. The CISC serves as the final qualifying meet as the FINA is expected to release the names as early as Monday. So if the BSF doesn’t get all four swimmers in, they will at least have two automatic qualifiers. But we’re hoping that Burrows and Evans will be granted per-

mission to join VanderpoolWallace and Evans. On the other hand, the situation is a little different for the athletic team. While the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations held a selection meeting on Sunday to submit the list of athletes they are going to recommend to the BOC, based on their qualifications and their inclusion for the relays, the International Amateur Athletic Federation has a little longer period to complete their final list of participants in Rio. The final decisions will be made on Monday, July 11, one day after former quarter-miler Demaris Cash hosts the Blue Marlins Track Classic on Sunday, July 10 - yes, Independence Day - at the new Thomas A Robinson National Stadium.

All for one and one for all - welcome to the new monied NBA SINCE we last spoke star free agent Kevin Durant jilted my Los Angeles Lakers. Nope, there is zero chance I delve into why that upsets me. Instead, this edition of the Fourth Quarter Press will attempt to gauge the overall free agency market. Midnight tonight marks the official start of the 2016 free agency period. The NBA, as a result of its massive new $24bn television deal, has already announced a $24m rise in the 2016-2017 salary cap. We can agree that the NBA dollar can no longer get you what it once could. For ‘Naismith’s sake’, Harrison Barnes and DeMar Derozan are demanding max contracts. To put these concepts into perspective, a max contract during the 2015-2016 campaign fetched roughly $24m. That number has now swelled to $34m. This substantial jump doesn’t only mean a bizarre cash grab by this year’s crop of free agents, but it signals that possibly every NBA team now has the ability to sign a top-tier star. The teams and the room they have in their salary cap are: LA Lakers - $62,613,020 Philadelphia $61,220,813 Boston - $53,397,958 Dallas - $48,081,683 Washington - $45,293,711 Portland - $41,813,658 Houston - $41,227,809 Charlotte - $39,830,474 Brooklyn - $38,636,058 Memphis - $38,082,020 Detroit - $38,005,231 Miami - $36,643,557 Atlanta - $34,652,234 Toronto - $32,385,182 Utah - $31,895,769 Denver - $31,776,000 New York - $30,372,607 Indiana - $30,139,491 Minnesota - $28,191,887 Phoenix - $26,856,859

FOR THE CLIPPERS, ONE OR TWO MINOR MOVES CAN PUSH THAT CAP NUMBER TO MORE THAN $20M, OPENING UP A SHOT AT THIS YEAR’S TOP CATCH - KEVIN DURANT. Orlando - $26,834,775 Sacramento - $25,519,110 Milwaukee - $25,248,940 New Orleans $22,431,197 Oklahoma - $22,006,756 Chicago - $16,343,300 San Antonio - $15,309,766 Golden State $10,987,516 Cleveland - $8,503,742 LA Clippers - $8,035,850 Teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Clippers have now gone from certain ‘luxury tax purgatory’ to active players in free agency. For the Clippers, one or two minor moves can push that cap number to more than $20m, opening up a shot at this year’s top catch - Kevin Durant. The increase in teams with money can either result in the driving up in the cost of sub-par players as lower-end teams chase a chance to get better; my Lakers throwing max deals at a Harrison Barnes or DeMar Derozan. Derozan turned down a $10m player option for 2016–17. He is now in a position for at least a $20m rise in his base salary de-

spite a shaky post-season. Or below market deals for stars and quality role players seeing this summer as a prime opportunity to jump on an already stacked championship squad. Again, the likes of Kevin Durant to Golden State, San Antonio, LA Clippers and so on. The intrigue this year is certainly in the numbers and not the names.

10 TOP STARS AND WHERE THEY MAY LAND

LeBron James (age 31) resigns with Cavaliers Kevin Durant (27) - signs with Spurs DeMar DeRozan (26) re-signs with Raptors Hassan Whiteside (26) signs with Lakers Dwyane Wade (34) - resigns with Heat Bradley Beal (23) - resigns with Wizards Al Horford (30) - signs with Celtics Mike Conley (28) - signs with Mavericks Nicolas Batum (27) signs with Lakers Andre Drummond (2) signs with Atlanta

The meet, which is expected to attract a number of international stars, will be used mainly by the BAAA for all four relay teams – men and women 4 x 100 and 4 x 400m – to solidify their positions going into Rio. The relays don’t have any qualifying times, so the IAAF will take the teams who post the top 16 times in order to make up the field. So there’s a chance that the Bahamas could field all four teams in the Olympics. As for the individual performances, the only new competitor to qualify was quarter-miler Alonzo Russell in the men’s 400m. In the hotly contested marquee event, Russell ran 45.25 seconds for second place to become the fourth Bahamian to run under the qualifying standard of 45.40. He joins national cham-

pion Steven Gardiner, who successfully defended his title in winning the race in 44.46. Veteran Chris ‘Fireman’ Brown was third in 45.59 and Michael Mathieu was sixth in 46.29. The flip side of the coin is the fact that only three competitors can compete for a country, unless they are given an exception as the defending champions as will be the case with countries like the United States and Jamaica, who have multiple qualifiers. The Bahamas also had the potential of having to make a decision on the men’s high jump with four legitimate competitors eligible to compete in Rio. But Ryan Ingraham eliminated himself when he finished fourth, failing to surpass the qualifying standard. As it pans out, the top three jumpers - Donald Thomas, Trevor Barry and Jamal Wilson - finished in that position to clinch their berths on the team without

having to go into any further discussion on who should go and who should stay home. Now, the majority of the discussion will be had on who should make up the teams for the relays and whether or not those athletes who qualified already, but didn’t compete in the nationals because of injuries, will have to go through a fitness test or they don’t go at all. In the case of the 4 x 100m for both teams, the competitors normally are selected based on their performances in the 100m, but there are some athletes who competed in the 200, who didn’t contest the 100. They have done times in the 100 prior to the nationals that were faster than some who did just the 100 at the trials. So again, it’s an intriguing question that will be answered very soon: Who will make up Team Bahamas for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 5-21?

THE TRIBUNE

Pitch concerns return ahead of Euro 2016 quarter-finals MARSEILLE (AP) - For organisers at a tournament like the European Championship, the less talk there is about the pitch, the better. But that’s not the case at Euro 2016. As the quarter-finals begin, worries about the playing surfaces persist. Portugal coach Fernando Santos is concerned that the state of the grass at Marseille’s Stade Velodrome could mean less of a spectacle when his team faces Poland today. France coach Didier Deschamps went as far as to call the Marseille pitch “a disaster” after players slipped during his team’s group stage win over Albania. Even though it has been eight days since the last game in Marseille, neither Portugal nor Poland trained on the pitch yesterday. “I don’t know if it’s in top shape but I’ve heard that it’s better,” Santos said. “If the pitch itself is good, both teams will be helped because they’re very technical teams. We play football on the ground, we play a fast game, both teams do.” The Marseille stadium hosted an AC/DC rock concert last month, angering French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet, who said club officials had been “taking risks” and that the pitches overall were not satisfactory for Euro 2016. The Marseille playing surface appeared in better condition yesterday, though it remains to be seen whether it will cut up when play

starts. UEFA had been carrying out repairs on the Marseille pitch during the group stage, as well as at the Stade de France in Paris, which will host the final. In Lille, the entire pitch had to be replaced after the group stage, giving it a patchy appearance for Germany’s 3-0 win over Slovakia in the last 16, for which the criticism was muted. That field faces another test when Wales and Belgium play there tomorrow. There has been heavy rain over some venues but strong sun in the south, leading to brown spots on the field in Nice when England lost to Iceland. UEFA has been defensive over the state of the pitches. Announcing the Lille pitch replacement, UEFA defended its pitch consultant Richard Hayden from what it called “completely baseless criticism directed at him throughout the tournament” and hoped the condition of the fields would improve. Now the tournament has reached the quarter-finals, any more talk about the pitches could be a major embarrassment for organisers. Poland’s pace is the main concern for Santos today. With their main striker Robert Lewandowski failing to score so far, Poland have relied on their defence and quick counter-attacks to carry the team into the last eight. Santos says he has

Loss aside, tennis teacher revels in chance to face Federer By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis Writer LONDON (AP) — How much money might you be willing to pay for the oncein-a-lifetime chance to play tennis against Roger Federer on Centre Court at Wimbledon? Or merely for the chance to emerge from the tunnel leading out to the green grass there and hear the full-throated yells of nearly 15,000 standing, clapping spectators pulling for you? Or, perhaps best of all, for the chance to look up at a guest box and see your parents, sister, brother and cousin leaping out of their seats, rejoicing, after you conjured up a beautifully curled lob that floated over the man considered by many to be the sport’s greatest player in history and landed in to win a 14-stroke exchange? Marcus Willis, who lives at home with Mom and Dad and works as a tennis instructor at a club in central England, got to experience all of that and more yesterday, and it didn’t cost the 25-year-old a dime. Actu-

ally, Willis earned the biggest paycheck of his career despite winding up with the sort of result everyone expected when a guy ranked 772nd in the world somehow found himself across the net from the man who spent more weeks at No. 1 than anyone: a 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 victory for Federer in the second round at the All England Club. “I did look up twice as I bounced the ball, and saw Roger Federer, and thought, ‘Oh, haven’t seen this before,’” Willis said. “Yeah, it was surreal. ... I had to get used to it and play.” He earned the right to be out there against the 17time Grand Slam champion thanks to an improbable, straight-from-a-screenplay couple of weeks that included victories in three matches during a playoff for low-ranked British players, three more in the qualifying rounds at Wimbledon, and then another Monday in his very first tour-level match. “It’s all been incredible and a bit of a blur,” said Willis, a left-hander with

ment deals. Willis entered Wimbledon with about $350 this year and less than $100,000 for his career in prize money — and, needless to say, zero endorsements. On Wednesday, Willis’ white shirt, which he bought about a year ago, was made by Federer’s apparel sponsor and had the gray initials “RF” etched on the left sleeve. On another rain-filled day that left a dozen men still unable to complete their first-round matches while No. 3 Federer and No. 1 Novak Djokovic moved into the third, Willis stepped out on court with a wave and the widest smile imaginable, shaking his head at the scene. He found other reasons to grin and revel in the moment. That shot in the third game that even Federer applauded and allowed Willis to boast with a chuckle later: “I can say, ‘I lobbed Roger Federer.’” A 113 mph ace Willis celebrated with arms raised. A forehand winner that finally, a half-hour and more than a set in, gave Willis

ROGER FEDERER, of Switzerland, right, shakes hands with Marcus Willis of Britain after beating him in their singles match yesterday at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. (AP) a strong serve who slices shots off both wings. “I’ve gone from one extreme to the other in a matter of days.” Willis, who charges about $40 per hour for lessons, truly became an overnight sensation. His girlfriend — who, in keeping with the Hollywood nature of the whole episode, recently persuaded him not to give up on his dream of being a regular on the professional tour — was interviewed on

the BBC. So were his family members. His loud group of supporters, who led rowdy chants that reverberated under the closed roof at the generally staid venue, got the TV treatment, too. “I said a few days ago: This story is gold,” Federer said. “He’s got a career after this. He definitely made the most of it.” Federer’s career prize money is just shy of $100 million, and that doesn’t include plenty from endorse-

his first game — and created pandemonium in the stands. More often, of course, things did not go his way. Willis, who leaves with a check for 50,000 pounds (about $67,000), would produce a genuinely impressive shot, only to see Federer top it, including with several no-look, over-the-shoulder volleys. Here’s guessing that Willis’ opponents in local leagues do not wield a racket quite the way Federer can. “You can’t leave the ball anywhere short or high. It’s just gone,” Willis said. “He’s just ridiculous.” Willis, it turns out, made an impression on Federer, too. “As I was playing,” Federer said, “I was thinking ... ‘This is definitely one of the matches I’ll remember.’” Imagine, then, how Willis felt about the 1 hour, 25 minutes they spent together on the world’s most famous tennis court. “Not my standard Wednesday, that,” everyman’s everyman said at the end of it all. “Next Wednesday might be quite different.”

US OPEN GOLF CHAMP JOHNSON CELEBRATES IN ABACOS

GOLFERS take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Cup semi-finals charity golf tournament at the Ocean Club course on Paradise Island.

Holowesko, Bethel to represent Bahamas at the Duke of Edinburgh Cup Finals BILLY Holowesko and David Bethel ensured their place as representatives of the Bahamas at the Duke of Edinburgh Cup Finals in Britain in October by winning the semi-final at the Ocean Club course, Paradise Island, on Sunday. Playing for Team Odyssey Aviation, the pair scored a combined net 57 in the better ball competition to win an all-expenses paid trip to the UK from October 2 to 6 including accommodations, flights, meals and golf at top courses plus an invitation to the awards dinner at Windsor Castle which is traditionally attended by a member of the Royal Family. Joining them will be runners-up Blake Nolan and Matt Freilich, representing

Team Higgs and Kelly, who scored 58. Ninety-six players took part in the 16th annual Duke of Edinburgh SemiFinals charity tournament in support of the Governor General’s Youth Awards (GGYA) programme. With the help of major sponsors like Bahamas Food Services, Tyreflex Motors, Graycliff, SunTee, Harbourside Marine and John Bull, Atlantis was able to donate $45,000 to the GGYA programme, taking its contribution over the last decade above $800,000. US OPEN champion golfer Dustin Johnson celebrated his success by taking a few days in the Bahamas, it emerged yesterday. Johnson waited until last Wednesday, his 32nd birthday, three days after winning his first major title at Oakmont before heading to the Abacos. He preferred to skip the talk shows in New York in favour of some solitude in the Bahamas with family and friends, spending time on his boat, in the water and playing a little golf (“a couple holes here and there”) at Baker’s Bay, Great Guana Cay. Johnson is not the first major champion to relax after a major championship victory in the Bahamas - last year Jordan Spieth arrived with his girlfriend after winning the US Open and returned earlier this year with fellow American professionals Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Smylie Kaufman after losing his US Masters title with a last round collapse. Thompson and Everette Mackey, accepted the cheque from Tournament Co-ordinator and Atlantis Public Relations Manager Eric Hall. Turnquest congratulated the sponsors for their support and the golfers for their efforts and for believing in the work of the programme. He impressed upon the attendees the importance of such programmes for young people at a time when so many are at risk and facing challenging times.
