SHAUNAE Miller-Uibo picked up where she left off last year at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by posting the world’s leading time as she kicked off her 2017 campaign on a high note. As one of two Bahamians competing in the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday in Shanghai, China, Miller-Uibo ran away from the field to easily take the women’s 400 metres in a blistering time of 49.77 seconds. The time, just off her personal best of 49.44 that won her the

Olympic gold, was the world’s fastest time this year as she was no match for runner-up American Natasha Hastings, who did 50.74 for second. Miller-Uibo now joins Bahamian Steven Gardiner, who also holds the fastest time in the men’s 400m. Gardiner didn’t compete in the meet as there wasn’t a men’s 400m. Gardiner won the race in Doha the previous weekend in 44.60, but he has the world’s best time of 44.26 that he ran to win the B final at the inaugural Grenada Invitational in St George’s, Grenada on April 8. third place finish in a season’s best of 2.29 metres or 7-feet, 6-inches, failed to clear a height in Shanghai as the only other Bahamian to compete in the meet. Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar won the event with 2.33m (7-7 ¾). He duplicated his victory at home in Qatar on May 4 with a leap of 2.36m (7-8 ¾). Up next for the Diamond League is the Prefontaine Classic at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, May 26-27. Miller-Uibo and Gardiner are both training and competing out of the On Track Management Company in Florida, headed by Claude Bryan.

lympians Stephen Newbold and Ramon Miller, rebounding from an injuryplaqued season, highlighted the performances at the Ambassadors’ Annual Fritz Grant Track and Field Invitational. The one-day event was held on Saturday at the original Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium where Newbold and Miller went head-to-head in the open men’s 200 metres. Newbold, who ran in the heats of the men’s 4 x 400m relay at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, won the half-lap race in 21.25 seconds followed by Miller, who missed last season because of an injury, in 21.46. Bradley Dormeus was third in 21.85. “It felt pretty good coming off the curve,” said Newbold of his performance. “My hamstring had a little bit of an issue, but I tried not to aggravate it. So coming into the line, I just tried to bring it in and not force anything. “So far, it’s been a prosperous season, so I want to thank God for bringing me this far and hopefully as the season progresses, I will continue to get better.” While the 200m remains his specialty, Newbold said his coach, Shaun Miller, has been pushing him to concentrate on the 400m where he can help out the men’s relay team so he’s looking forward to making his contribution. Miller, who after a year’s absence made his season debut at the Penn Relays last month as a part of the men’s 4 x 4 relay team, said he was thankful to God that he got the opportunity to compete again. “I’m just trying to get my footing back. I know it will take some time, but I’m really trying to get prepared for Nationals where I

JONQUEL GRABS CAREER HIGH 20 REBOUNDS By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE Connecticut Sun organisation expects Jonquel Jones to have a breakout season in her sophomore campaign in the WNBA, and Jones delivered immediately with a new career high in her season debut. Jones grabbed a careerhigh 20 rebounds in the Sun’s 81-74 loss to the Atlanta Dream at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, on Saturday night. She added eight points on 3-11 shooting from the field, two steals and two blocked shots in 27 minutes. The Sun took a lead briefly in the fourth quarter when Morgan Tuck hit a three-pointer with 7:51 left

YOUNG athletes compete in the Ambassadors’ Annual Fritz Grant Track and Field Invitational at the original Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium on Saturday. Photo: Shawn Hanna/Tribune Staff will get to compete against the big boys,” Miller said. As he prepares for the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations’ National Championships, scheduled for June 23-24 in Grand Bahama, Miller admitted that he has to get his confidence back. “I had a back quad injury before the trials last year, but I’m working on getting my confidence back. That’s the biggest thing right now,” he stressed. “I know I will be ready to go. There’s another meet here next week so hopefully I will open up with the 400m then and see how it goes.” Also, V’Alonee Robinson, rep-

resenting TWD Athletics, won the women’s open 100m in 12.25. Robinson got a double dose of victory as she took the long jump with a leap of 5.58m. Antonishka Deveaux of the University of the Bahamas was the runner-up in the 100m in 12.49. She came back and took the 200m in 25.36. The men’s century champion was Karon Dean of Swift Athletics in 11.01. The meet also saw a number of athletes who competed on the CARIFTA team in Curacao over the Easter holiday weekend and those who are a part of the inaugural NACAC Youth team that will

travel to Trinidad & Tobago June 17-18. Leading the way was TWD Athletics’ Doneisha Anderson, winner of the under-18 girls’ 100m in 12.56 and the 200m in 25.10. Daehja Moss, of Leap of Faith, got second in the women’s long jump with 5.31 metres or 17-feet, 5 1/4-inches, but she won the high jump with 1.65m (5-5) over University of the Bahamas’ Beyonce Scott, who did 1.55m (5-1). Scott also got third in the long jump with 5.05m (16-7) and she won the 100m hurdles in 15.49

Bowling National Championships roll in tonight at Mario’s By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net AFTER years of trying, Jonice ‘Joy’ Lockhart finally tasted what it felt like to be the champion of the Bahamas Bowling Federation’s 2016 National Championships. Now she’s hoping that she can duplicate that feat when the BTC Nationals open tonight and wrap up Sunday (May 28) with the live television final at Mario’s Bowling and Family Entertainment Centre. Lockhart, who attributed her success to her coach and brother, BBF president Sonith Lockhart, said she was so impressed

with her performance at the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup last year in Shanghai, China that she also wants to go back for an encore this year. Both the men and women champions will represent the Bahamas at this year’s prestigious event in Hermosillo, Mexico, November 4–12. David Slatter, known as ‘Mr Consistency,’ is the defending men’s champion. “I am truly humbled to have this championship under my belt after many years of harsh coaching from my brother and the knowledge that I have in bowling,” said Lockhart. “One of the things I wanted to accomplish in bowling was going to the World Cup and in going to the World Cup, you bowl with the best. I finished 49th in the world and I think that needs to be commended.” Lockhart, an employee of BTC, said the difference is the fact that the majority of the bowlers who compete at the World Cup bowl like Bahamians on their job. “They bowl seven hours and we go to work seven hours,” she stated. “This is just recreational sport for us. So I am truly humbled that I am hoping that title and with all intent, I do intend to repeat as champion and I can give God the glory and to say thank you to my brother for his assistance.” As the defending champion, Lockhart said she knows that the competition will be fierce and she knows that they will be com-

Watch every shot and stay focused,” she said.

Lockhart is expected to be challenged by former champions Driskell Rolle and Xynae Rolle, along with Kayla Nixon, Janice Hoyte, Camille Burnside and Tara Culmer. It’s anticipated that at least 20 women will be competing.

Jamal Flowers of Fast Forward won the 100m in 11.99. Kendrick Major also picked up the win in the under-16 boys’ 200m in 23.46 after the Fast Forward competitor got second in the 100m

in 11.82. Amarion Wallace of 3PA Stallions took the 100m in 11.82. Meet patron Fritz Grant said he was appreciative of the gesture bestowed upon him once again. “I give God the praise, I give God the thanks for the overwhelming support of the clubs and the fans who came out for the meet,” he said. “It’s just a glorious occasion to be a part of another success meet.“With success comes hard work and we know that the meet didn’t happen without its challenges, but throughout it all, I give God all thanks and praise. I also thank God for the Ambassadors Track Club.’

Grant serves as the president and the head coach of the Ambassadors, one of the oldest track and field clubs registered within the BAAA. He said the meet certainly provides an opportunity to ensure that the athletes stay in shape after Carifta and for those who are gearing up for the summer meets. “This was very inspirational and very encouraging being able to give back,” he said. “When you are talking about youth development, this is one of the opportunities for us to demonstrate that. I think the performances in the meet were a good indication of their development.”

CHARLTON AND GIBSON SHINE IN THE BIG TEN FROM PAGE 1 Kaiwan Culmer and Kinard Rolle. In her specialty in the 100m hurdles, Charlton ran 12.67 to take the title over her nearest rival, senior Kimberly Golding from Minnesota, who did 12.98. She won the highly contested 100m which featured two other Bahamians in 11.31 seconds. Her team-mate and close friend Carmiesha Cox was fourth in 11.48, while Penn State’s sophomore Keianna Albury was eighth in 11.68. In the 200m, Cox got the better of the trio with her fourth place in 23.04. Charlton followed in fifth in 23.17 and Albury was eighth again in 23.46. With Cox and Albury running the first two legs, Purdue won the 4 x 100m relay in 44.79. Albury ran the second leg to help Penn State to a fifth place in 45.68. Gibson, in her senior year at Penn State, was also a winner taking the women’s triple jump with a leap of 5.96 metres or 45-feet, 1 ¾-inches. In the long jump, Gibson was eighth with a leap of 5.96m (19-6 ¾). On the men’s side, Kaiwan Culmer, a junior at Nebraska, was third in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 16.12m (52-10 ¾). Rolle came 17th in the preliminaries of the 400m in 47.82. He also ran the third leg for Purdue as their 4 x 1 team got fourth in 40.83. And in the 4 x 4m relay, Rolle led off for Purdue as they ran 3:03.65 for third place behind Ohio State (3:04.95) and Penn State (3:05.22). SEC Championships Ambrose, now in her sophomore year, was 17th in the women’s 100m in 11.54 and she was 13th in the 200m in 23.11. Ambrose anchored Auburn women’s 4 x 1 team to third in 43.35. LSU won in 42.56. After getting disqualified in a false start in the men’s 100m preliminaries, Smith came back in his specialty in the 200m for an eighth place. The Auburn senior ran 20.72. He had the eighth fastest qualifying time of 20.47. Smith also had double duties in the relays, running the open leg of their 4 x 100m team that finished fifth in 39.27. LSU won in 38.71. He also ran the second leg on their 4 x 4 team that came second in 3:02.10. Texas A&M won in 3:00.72. Coakley, a sophomore also from Auburn, didn’t advance out of the preliminaries of the men’s 110m hurdles after running 14.42 for 14th overall. Coakley was also 13th

at the regional will qualify for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held June 7-10 at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. Also at the SEC conference, Serena Brown completed in both

the discus and shot put for Texas A&M. In the discus, the freshman got third with a distance of 32.01m (170-7). The performance came one day after she failed to get in a mark in the shot put fouling all three of her attempts.

JONQUEL JONES GRABS CAREER HIGH 20 REBOUNDS FROM PAGE 1 to play. The Dream regained the lead with a 6-0 run and maintained the advantage for the remainder of the game. The Sun came within three (77-74) with less than one minute left to play, but the Dream would hit a three-pointer to end the run. Jones’ rebound total was the most by a Sun player since Tina Charles grabbed 22 boards back in 2012. The Dream set a WNBA record with 21 made free throws in the first half. The Sun will be on the road next weekend when they travel to face the Indiana Fever, May 20 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ranked at No.11 in the Associated Press’ WNBA preseason poll, they completed the preseason with

an undefeated 3-0 record. Jones finished her rookie campaign for the Connecticut Sun averaging 6.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shot in just over 14 minutes per game. She shot 53 per cent from the field and 33 per cent from three-point range. She received one vote in the 2016 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year tally to finish in a 5-way tie for fifth behind winner Jantel Lavender. The Sun finished last season 14-20, 5th in Eastern Conference, just missing the postseason after a dramatic midseason turnaround. Sun head coach and general manager, Curt Miller told Marc Allard, of the Norwich Bulletin that Jones will take on a greater role this season. “She is going to be able to play through mistakes. She is going to have to stay on the floor through those mistakes. She is going to have a great opportunity to really blossom on the WNBA scene

in what we truly believe will be a breakout year for her,” Miller said. “She has some wear on her body right now, lost some weight, so we will need to bulk her back up because she’s going to give up 50, 60, 80 pounds some nights and they’re going to beat on her. The difficulty when you have a post player who can score on the perimeter is that she can’t fall in love with it. “She has to still go and get baskets in the paint for us. She has to play with her back to the basket in the paint and be able to take the pounding. If not, she’s going to get pushed to the perimeter, and if she settles, hangs out there because she can play out there, she’s not going to be anywhere near as effective. She can’t be a finesse big kid.” In March, Jones ended her time in the Korean Basketball League with one of her best games of the season and a championship title for her club. She posted 27 points, 25 re-

bounds and three blocks in an 83-72 win for Woori Bank over the Samsung Life Blue Minx to complete a three-game sweep and claim the 2017 title, the fifth consecutive for the club. Jones was particularly dominant in the finals where she averaged 15.3 points and 23 rebounds per game. She averaged 15.8 points, 14.3 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks – all team leads - in 24 minutes per game for Woori Bank in 38 games this season. Jones told Slam Magazine that the expectations have increased for her at home in the Bahamas as well as her profile continues to increase. “It’s hard to go anywhere without people asking you for a picture and different stuff like that,” she said. “I was just a regular old name and doing what I did. Now people have seen what I’ve accomplished, and they’re proud of me and they want to be a part of it.”

BOWLING NATIONAL CHAMPS. ROLL IN TONIGHT AT MARIO’S FROM PAGE 1 As for the men, Slatter should be challenged by competitors such as multiple national champion Leonardo ‘Lee’ Davis and another former champion Richard Pyfrom. There is expected to be at least 25 men vying for the top spot. “You can’t take anything for granted because who you expect not to be there usually rises up out of the pack and some of them end up coming first in the pack,” Sonith Lockhart said. “I’ve been five-time champion, two-time champion in Nassau, two-time champion in Grand Bahama and one-time champion in Miami, Florida where we had our roll off there because we didn’t have a bowling facility here.” Lockhart sent out a message to his rivals. “They call me old and finished, but I expect to be the champion this year,” he said. Federation public relations officer Clayton Gardiner said the competition will be very keen this year in the A, B and C classes. He encourages the public to come out and see the country’s cream of the crop go to battle for the title. After the intense two weeks of competition, the top five bowlers will advance to the step ladder final on Super Sunday or Championship Sunday on May 28, starting at 1pm. Ricardo Rolle, treasurer of the federation, said there will be five divisions for men inclusive of A-E classes and four for women from A-D. In addition to earning the spots on the World Cup team, Rolle also revealed that the federation will be sending three other national teams off to compete later this year. They include a six male and female team to compete in the Central American and Caribbean Championships June 24 to July 2 in Guatemala, the World Senior Championship August 13-20 in Munich, Germany with four men and women travelling and the Tournament of Americas July 23-29 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with six men and women representing the country in the adults, seniors and super seniors categories. “We expect this year to be exciting as we send off a number of national teams to represent our country,” Rolle said. Mario Curry, who represented BTC, said they are delighted to be the sponsors for the Nationals. “We are truly a corporate entity, who believes in the whole man and sports is one of those ways in which we would like for our names to be seen in terms of helping the man,” he said. “We are well aware that Jonice Lockhart, an employee of ours, is the reigning champion, so we are extremely proud of her accomplishments in terms of placing BTC on the map, not just in terms of her name, but also her skills. “We would like to wish all of the bowlers who are bowling in this BTC Bahamas Nationals all the very best. “We will be here and we will have a table set up with all kinds of prizes and surprises. We encourage the family members of the various bowlers to come out and cheer the bowlers on.”

‘Take Bahamian culture to the world’ with the Bahamas Bowl THE Bahamas Bowl was the first major sporting event I covered as a journalist. This past week organisers announced plans for the fourth instalment of what has become a mustsee event - the game will be held on December 22 at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium and I, for one, can no longer accept the bland build-up to and the poor attendance for this event. I know it is a little bit early. And I also know we are still waiting for things to come together with the newly-elected Free National Movement administration. However, work must be done to make this event as good off the field of play as it is on. Important tasks must be identified now, arranged in an attainable manner and worked on from now. Before it became an international trend to tune in to this game and berate the poor attendance on social media, I made it a point to call out both event organisers and local affiliates for the lack of push here on the ground to ensure that the 15,000-seat venue is filled. Back then, in 2015, I was doing so in my capacity as contributor for a local blog. This continued even after being asked to contribute this weekly column. My issue is not with anyone in particular. It lies with the fact that avenues are available to make this event better for fans in attendance, all the while as we spread the fundamentals and joys of football to the youth of the Bahamas. Attendance One of the biggest criti-

cisms you hear from persons on the ground at this event is their lack of familiarity with the two teams. While many Bahamians consume a lot of college football over the course of the year, much of their viewing is spread across programmes from the top tier conferences and not the Mid-American Conference and American Athletic Conference - the contributors to the Bahamas Bowl. I have long been a proponent of the government fostering a television arrangement between these two conferences and local television stations for broadcasting rights of their seasons. Hence, by the time the participants in the annual bowl game are determined, local consumers will have a level of familiarity with whichever combination of teams are selected. Equally as important, such an arrangement would boost the offering of sports programming offered by JCN, ZNS and Our Tv. This level of familiarity will, in my opinion, propel Bahamians across the country to make a day of the Bahamas Bowl event if only to see the conclusion of weeks of programming they have seen played out on their television sets. Secondly, organisers must get on the ground and build a working relationship with local youth leagues of all sporting disciplines; after all, quite often, these are the only societal groupings free in the middle of the week with the ability to attend this event. The first two editions of this game were hosted on Christmas Eve. Bahamians are notorious last-minute

If a base was built among local youth leagues, and I dare say a youth football league was established, organisers of the Bahamas Bowl could guarantee themselves a filled to capacity eastern grandstand by offering each of these leagues and its teams free tickets and meal vouchers courtesy of the event title sponsor. This arrangement would allow parents needing time free to complete last-minute shopping with that time, all while allowing thousands of Bahamian kids already on school break a couple of hours and good, clean fun. Additionally, if organisers were to reach out to the

MICHAEL SYMONETTE 5TH OVERALL IN FUN/RUN WALK

Ranfurly Home for Children and the other youth hostels throughout the capital, they would guarantee hundreds more in attendance. I know this sounds like an expensive feat but I am sure the corporate sections of Aetos Holdings, the parent company of Popeye’s Bahamas, would be interested in underwriting a portion of this “community imitative” and so would many other companies. Pick up the phone and get corporate Bahamas on the line. My last idea to boost attendance comes with respect to holiday festivities. Bahamians love a good party. If you don’t believe me ask Machel Montano and the scores of Bahamians that braved the rain well

into the morning to see him hit the stage. I am not saying we need Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival part two to coincide with the Bahamas Bowl. However, we need to break away from the “clash of junkanoo group” narrative. We need a dedicated team working to make pregame events more than a bland tailgate experience; halftime more than 15 minutes of the Saxons and Valley Boys marching from opposite ends of the field to face off and post-game more than a trophy presentation. Let’s get our Junkamania stage set up at the carnival grounds which sits adjacent to the national stadium. Let’s pack that stage with local musical acts for the two and-a-half hour period before the game, allowing ESPN to set up their Game Day broadcast amidst the wide array of true Bahamian culture. Let’s carry that flair over to the stadium during the halftime performance with another top tier Bahamian

talent putting on a top tier performance at the 50-yard line. Also, let’s replace that uninteresting trophy presentation with one on the field that runs into a legitimate cultural after-party built around, you guessed it, Junkanoo. During this time, local junkanoo organisers can lay out parade details in a funfilled atmosphere. This way, you make the ground of the national sports centre a hub of entertainment and fun for anywhere between six and eight hours. In conclusion, my goal is not only to put butts in seats during the Bahamas Bowl live broadcast to the world but to use this opportunity to take Bahamian culture to the world. After all, over the last 10 years, we in the Bahamas have proven that we are a little more than just ‘sun, sand and sea’. • Ricardo Wells writes Fourth Quarter Press every Monday. Molina homers twice to help Cardinals beat Cubs By STEVE OVERBEY Associated Press ST LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina homered twice and Adam Wainwright threw seven shutout innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Matt Carpenter also homered for St. Louis, which won for the eighth time in nine games. Chicago has lost three of four. Molina recorded the third multi-homer game of his career. His last came on Aug. 21, 2011 at

Wrigley Field. He drilled a tworun homer off Jake Arrieta (4-3) in the second inning and added a solo blast in the eighth. Wainwright (3-3) allowed four hits in a 102-pitch stint. He struck out three and walked four. Trevor Rosenthal and Kevin Siegrist each pitched a perfect inning to complete the four-hitter. Carpenter’s two-run drive came in the third. He was 1-for-31 before the round-tripper against Arrieta, his friend and college teammate at TCU. Wainwright’s seven-inning ef-

fort was his longest of the season. Randal Grichuk added three hits for St. Louis, which won two out of three from the world champions. Chicago had runners on in six of the first seven innings. Rockies’ Valaika has 2 HRs, Senzatela gets win for mom By BRENT W. NEW Associated Press DENVER (AP) — Pat Valaika homered twice and drove in four runs, Antonio Senzatela got the win in an emotional Mother’s Day start and the Colorado Rockies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-6 on Sunday. Senzatela (6-1) was pitching on Mother’s Day for the first time since his mom died of breast cancer last July. Like many around the league, Senzatela used a pink bat to raise awareness about the disease. The rookie right-hander is tied for the majors’ lead in wins. He allowed four runs in five innings, his shortest outing since his first career start at Milwaukee on April 6. Nolan Arenado also went deep as the Rockies hit their first homers of the series to salvage a fourgame split. Their lead in the NL West is back up to 1 1/2 games. Los Angeles led 4-3 before Valaika hit a two-run homer in the fourth off starter Julio Urias (0-1). Arenado, who also had an RBI double, added to Colorado’s lead in the fifth with a two-run shot off veteran reliever Sergio Romo. Justin Turner and Cody Bellinger each drove in a run in the eighth to cut the lead the 7-6 before Valaika hit another two-run blast.

BASEBALL CAPSULES NATIONALS 6, PHILLIES 4 WASHINGTON (AP) — Fresh from getting a big deal, Bryce Harper hit a game-ending home run with two outs in the ninth inning that sent the Washington Nationals over the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 on Saturday night. Hours before the game, the Nationals announced they had reached agreement with Harper on a $21,625,000 contract for the 2018 season, covering the slugging outfielder through his last year before he can become a free agent. Then in the ninth, the 24-year-old star provided an immediate payoff. Pinch hitter Adam Lind led off with a single against Edubray Ramos (0-3) and two outs later, Harper lined an 0-1 pitch over the wall in center for his 11th homer of the season. Trailing 4-0 in the fifth, Washington tied it on a two-run homer by Trea Turner and a two-run double by Ryan Zimmerman. Shawn Kelley (3-0) pitched the ninth. RED SOX 6, RAYS 3 BOSTON (AP) — Chris Sale struck out 12 while pitching seven solid innings and Mookie Betts hit a tworun homer, leading Boston over Tampa Bay. It was Sale's seventh straight start with doubledigit strikeouts. The 6-foot6 left-hander allowed three runs and two hits, both homers. Joe Kelly worked the eighth before Craig Kimbrel finished the three-hitter for his 11th save. Betts also doubled in a run in Boston's four-run fifth inning. Deven Marrero drove in two runs, helping the Red Sox to their 14th win in their last 19 games against the Rays. Kevin Kiermaier and Logan Morrison homered for Tampa Bay, which has

Greg Holland struck out the side in the ninth for his majors’ best 16th save. Holland has converted his first 16 save opportunities for the Rockies, a franchisebest mark to start a season. Senzatela dealt with traffic on base in every inning except the fourth, but got help from his defense to limit the damage. He gave up seven hits, three walks and two homers while striking out five. The 22-year-old got out of the first with runners on the corners thanks to a fielder’s choice double play, and he was bailed out of the third by second baseman DJ LeMahieu, who laid out on a sharp grounder and threw out Chase Utley at first to save a run. With two outs in the fifth, Senzatela was struck in the back of the leg by a liner from Yasmani Grandal. He stayed in the game and forced a flyout to end the inning. Corey Seager and Yasiel Puig homered for the Dodgers, who couldn’t protect two early leads. Seager hit a two-run blast in the first and Puig hit a laser to left in the second. LeMahieu and Charlie Blackmon both finished with three hits for Colorado, which finished 6-4 on its longest homestand of the season. Now the Rockies will play 22 of their next 29 games on the road, where they’ve gone 11-5 this year.

LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Martinez pitched into the seventh inning and collected two hits, leading the Cardinals to the win. St. Louis also got another solid performance from Tommy Pham, who had two hits and two RBIs. The outfielder is batting .387 with seven extra-base hits in eight games since being recalled from Triple-A this month. In a rematch of the season opener, Martinez (3-3) again topped Jon Lester (12). Martinez allowed three runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven. Top Cubs prospect Ian Happ homered off Martinez in the seventh for his first hit in his major league debut. Lester was charged with four runs, three earned, and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Seung Hwan Oh pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 11 opportunities. RANGERS 6, ATHLETICS 5 ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Elvis Andrus and Nomar Mazara had consecutive two-RBI hits as Texas rallied earlier this time, beating Oakland for its season-best fifth straight victory. The Rangers loaded the bases in the seventh when reliever Ryan Dull (1-2) allowed a hit and two walks before Liam Hendriks took over on the mound. Andrus then grounded a single through the left side of the infield to tie it at 4. Mazara followed by lining a two-run double over left fielder Khris Davis and to the wall. Tony Barnette (1-0) got the latest win despite allowing three hits and a run in one inning. Keona Kela gave up a run in the eighth before Matt Bush struck out two in a perfect ninth for his third save in four chances. DODGERS 4, ROCKIES 0 DENVER (AP) — Alex

Brett Eibner supplied additional offense with his first home run of the season and Austin Barnes and Justin Turner added RBI doubles for the Dodgers, who won their 100th game at Coors Field, the most by any visiting club. Wood (4-0) fanned at least one batter in five of his six innings and struck out the side in the third en route to reversing a dismal history at Coors, where he had gone 0-2 with an 11.25 ERA in four previous starts. Tyler Anderson (2-4) had eight strikeouts in 5 2-3 innings for Colorado. BLUE JAYS 7, MARINERS 2 TORONTO (AP) — Jose Bautista hit a three-run homer, and the Blue Jays earned their sixth win in seven games. Kendrys Morales also connected for Toronto, and Kevin Pillar had three hits, raising his AL-leading total to 47. Devon Travis became the first player to steal home for the Blue Jays since June 2, 2015, scoring on a double steal in the eighth. Dominic Leone (1-0) got one out for the win as Toronto improved to 8-4 in May. Seattle right-hander Ryan Weber left with a sore shoulder after 3 2/3 innings in his season debut. Nick Vincent (1-1) got the loss. ROYALS 4, ORIOLES 3 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nate Karns struck out a career-high 12 in five innings, Eric Hosmer reached base four times and Kansas City beat Baltimore. Karns is the first in franchise history to strike out 12 in five innings. The last major league pitcher to accomplish that was Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs on June 5, 2016. Francisco Pena homered in the third and fifth innings against Karns. Pena had only one career homer entering the game. Kelvin Herrera worked a perfect ninth for his seventh save in eight chances. GIANTS 3, REDS 1 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Brandon Belt and Justin Ruggiano homered, Matt Moore pitched into the eighth inning and the Giants beat the Reds in a matchup of weary teams. San Francisco and Cincinnati had a quick turnaround after they played 17 innings Friday night, with the Giants winning 3-2 on Buster Posey's game-ending homer. Moore (2-4) provided a lift with 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball. He allowed eight hits, struck out seven and walked three. The last-place Giants (1424) won consecutive games for just the second time this season. They have won three of four overall. Scott Schebler homered for Cincinnati, and Lisalverto Bonilla (0-1) pitched a six-hitter for his first career complete game. TWINS 4, INDIANS 1 CLEVELAND (AP) — Jose Berrios pitched neatly into the eighth inning in his first start of the season and the Twins beat the Indians in a game delayed several minutes when a squirrel ran around the field. Max Kepler connected to give the Twins a home run in 14 straight games, their longest streak since 1988. He also had an RBI single in a three-run fourth for the AL Central leaders, who handed Cleveland its third straight loss. The squirrel appeared from right field with Michael Brantley batting in the Cleveland sixth. Play

his first start since he was placed on the 10-day DL, retroactive to May 5, with an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder. San Francisco’s Matt Cain will oppose him as the Dodgers begin a three-game set at AT&T Park on Monday. Rockies: Rookie LHP Kyle Freeland (3-2, 2.93) will pitch at an American League ballpark for the first time in his career as the Rockies open up a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. In his last start, the Denver native tossed six innings and gave up five runs — all in the second inning — in an 8-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

was halted as the squirrel cut across the infield. It eventually hopped into the stands and play resumed. Berrios (1-0), called up from Triple-A Rochester on Friday, gave up one run and two hits in 7 2/3 innings. Brandon Kintzler pitched the ninth for his 10th save. Indians pitcher Mike Clevinger (1-1) allowed three runs and three hits while walking five in 4 1/3 innings. PIRATES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3 PHOENIX (AP) — Trevor Williams pitched five strong innings and Pittsburgh snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory over Arizona. Nick Ahmed homered twice for the Diamondbacks, the second to make it a one-run game in the ninth. It was Ahmed's first career multihomer game. Williams (2-2), in his second start since taking the rotation spot vacated when Jameson Taillon left to begin treatment for testicular cancer, gave up a run on four hits, striking out four and walking one. Taijuan Walker (3-3) gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits in six innings. Tony Watson gave up a run in the ninth but got his eighth save. BREWERS 11, METS 4 MILWAUKEE (AP) — Travis Shaw capped Milwaukee's eight-run fifth inning with a three-run homer, helping the Brewers beat New York. Milwaukee sent 11 batters to the plate in its highest scoring inning of the season. Orlando Arcia had a two-run single and Jesus Aguilar drove in two runs with a double before Shaw connected for his eighth homer. Neil Walker homered for New York, which has dropped three in a row. Robert Gsellman (2-3) was charged with six runs, five earned, and nine hits in four-plus innings. Milwaukee right-hander Zach Davies (4-2) got the win despite allowing four

runs and seven hits in five innings. TIGERS 4, ANGELS 3 ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — J.D. Martinez powered up in just his second game of the season, hitting his second homer of the game in the ninth inning to lift Detroit over Los Angeles. Martinez opened the ninth with a solo shot off Bud Norris (1-2) to snap a 3-3 tie. He came off the disabled list Friday after missing the Tigers' first 33 games with a sprained right foot. Martinez opened the scoring in the second inning, following Victor Martinez's single with a two-run homer off Ricky Nolasco. Alex Wilson (1-1) pitched the eighth and got the win. Justin Wilson struck out three in the ninth for his second save. BRAVES 3, MARLINS 1 MIAMI (AP) — Julio Teheran pitched six scoreless innings, leading Atlanta to the road win. Nick Markakis had three hits and drove in a run for the Braves, and Matt Kemp extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the eighth. Teheran (3-3) beat the Marlins for the first time in seven starts. He allowed three hits and walked two. Jim Johnson pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save in eight chances. Justin Bour homered for the Marlins, who have lost five straight and 14 of 17 overall. Edinson Volquez (0-5) yielded two runs in six innings. WHITE SOX 5, PADRES 4 CHICAGO (AP) — Yolmer Sanchez singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth to score Tyler Saladino and snap Chicago's sixgame losing streak. Warriors stop Spurs, take 1-0 lead By JANIE McCAULEY AP Sports Writer OAKLAND, California (AP) — Stephen Curry scored 40 points and hit a tying 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining, and the Golden State Warriors rallied from way down after Kawhi Leonard was lost to an ankle injury to beat the San Antonio Spurs 113-111 yesterday in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals. Draymond Green gave Golden State the lead for good on a three-point play after the Warriors trailed by as many as 25 points. Leonard left in the third quarter after he re-injured his left ankle, and the Warriors capitalised with an 18-0 run. Kevin Durant scored 10 straight points during a key fourth-quarter stretch on the way to 34 points, while Zaza Pachulia had 11 points and nine rebounds. Leonard had 26 points and eight rebounds. LaMarcus Aldridge delivered another clutch playoff performance with 28 points and eight boards. Somehow, these unusually careless, cold-shooting Warriors found a way to keep their unblemished postseason record alive at 9-0. Game 2 in the series is Tuesday night back at Oracle Arena. Curry scored 19 points in the third quarter and went 7 for 16 on 3s and 14 of 26 overall. Leonard first went down after stepping on a teammate’s foot along the bench after taking a shot. Pachulia later slid into him as he came down from shooting and Leonard fell into the Spurs bench, grabbing his ankle. Losing Leonard could be a story of this series. He shot 7 of 13 in 23 minutes to go with eight rebounds and

three assists. He made all 11 of his free throws. He sat out Game 6 of the last round against Houston, a 39-point, series-clinching win on Thursday, after injuring the ankle in a Game 5 overtime victory. Durant has repeatedly spoken of elevating his game when it matters most — and wow did he do it at the very moment the Warriors needed a huge lift on their home floor. His 3-pointer with 7:53 to play got Golden State within 94-88, then he drove to his left and right by Kyle Anderson for an emphatic one-handed slam the next possession to ignite a deafening sellout crowd. Durant hit another 3 at the 6:10 mark and a jumper the next time down before Shaun Livingston’s driving dunk. Gregg Popovich lost to good friend and old pupil Mike Brown, filling in as Warriors acting coach for the ailing Steve Kerr — who played for Popovich. Yet for much of the afternoon, the Spurs outplayed the mighty Warriors on both ends of the floor. They crashed the offensive glass as they so like to do — something Golden State stressed all week — going right at defenders in the paint and forcing the Warriors into tough shots. Even the open looks weren’t falling. The Warriors missed their initial five 3-point tries before Curry hit 5:05 before halftime to ignite a stunned-into-silence sellout crowd as Golden State got within 46-32. The next sequence the Spurs managed three offensive rebounds before scoring. San Antonio had six steals among the Warriors’ initial nine turnovers and Golden State wasn’t getting the kind of easy shots it was used to going almost untested the first two rounds.

(AP Photo/Jeff Chiu) Even when the Warriors did things right the Spurs answered. Kerr watched the game from behind the scenes in the arena a day after returning to the practice floor for the first time in more than three weeks. “He’s gone through hell,” Popovich said pregame. “I’m sure most people don’t really know, and I’ll leave that to him to describe as much as he wants to describe. But it’s been very difficult for him. He’s shown a lot of courage getting through what he’s gone through.”

TIP-INS Spurs: Patty Mills, a college star at nearby Saint Mary’s, struggled in place of the injured Tony Parker — out for the remainder of the playoffs with a leg injury. Mills shot 1 for 8 and missed all six of his 3-point tries for five points. “I don’t want to talk too much about Patty Mills because the more good things I say the more we’re going to have to pay him,” Popovich cracked before the game. Pau Gasol picked up two quick fouls and his third 5:18 before halftime. Warriors: Green received

his second technical of the postseason when he celebrated a third-quarter steal and referee Marc Davis penalised him. ... Golden State’s 16 points in the first were its lowest-scoring quarter of the postseason. Andre Iguodala was limited by a sore left knee. POP OFF Asked pregame whether the state of the world distracts him, Popovich went off again — without ever using President Donald Trump’s name. “Absolutely,” he said. Then, Pop popped off.

“It’s got nothing to do with the Democrats losing the election. It’s got to do with the way one individual conducts himself and that’s embarrassing,” the coach said. “It’s dangerous to our institutions and what we all stand for and what we expect the country to be, but for this individual he’s in a game show. And everything that happens begins and ends with him, not with our people or our country. Every time he talks about those things that’s just a ruse. That’s just disingenuous, cynical and fake.”

NADAL BEATS THIEM IN MADRID OPEN, WINS 3RD STRAIGHT TITLE By TALES AZZONI AP Sports Writer MADRID (AP) — Rafael Nadal defeated Dominic Thiem 7-6 (8), 6-4 yesterday in the Madrid Open final to win his third straight title and continue his good form heading into the French Open. Nadal withstood a tough challenge from the ninth-ranked Thiem, converting on his fourth match point to earn his 15th straight victory on clay and tie Novak Djokovic’s record of 30 career titles in Masters 1000 events. The triumph at his home tournament gave Nadal his 72nd career title, and 52nd on clay. It was Nadal’s second straight win against the 23-year-old Austrian, coming two weeks after the Barcelona Open final when the

fifth-ranked Spaniard cruised to victory in straight sets. Nadal also won in Monte Carlo last month. “These last few weeks have been very special. I’m very happy for what I achieved,” Nadal said. “It means a lot to me to win at home, it’s always a special place for me.” Nadal had easily defeated Thiem in Barcelona, losing only five games in a two-set victory, but was forced to work a lot harder on Sunday. In an even first set, Nadal had to save two set points in the tiebreaker. The Spaniard converted his fifth set point of the match to take that tiebreaker and go one set up. Nadal broke early in the second set but was not able to pull away, and needed to save four

break points in the final game before closing out the match. “Anything could have happened at the end of the first set, but I think I played well the important points at the end,” Nadal said. “I saved a few set points playing some good shots with my forehand. After that I went for it.” Thiem was trying to win his ninth title, and the first since winning the Rio de Janeiro tournament in the beginning of the year. It was his first final in a Masters 1000 event. “It was a good fight out there. I was much, much better and much closer than in Barcelona,” Thiem said. “Sometimes against the best players in the world, you even lose when you play well.” Nadal has a tour-leading 34 vic-

tories in what has been a superb season following lean years for the 14-time Grand Slam champion. He also made it to three finals, losing two of them to Roger Federer, including at the Australian Open. Nadal, who was out for much of last year because of a wrist injury, has won 30 of his last 32 sets going into the tournament in Rome this week. Then he will try to win his 10th title at Roland Garros, where he won his last Grand Slam title three years ago. He defeated Djokovic in the semi-finals in Madrid, snapping a seven-match winless streak against the second-ranked Serb. It was Nadal’s fifth title in eight Madrid Open finals, and the first since 2014. His other titles came in 2005, 2010 and 2013.

Barcelona, Madrid win as title race goes to final round By TALES AZZONI AP Sports Writer MADRID (AP) — Barcelona and Real Madrid won their matches yesterday with the Spanish league title race now guaranteed to go to the final round. Neymar scored a hat trick for Barcelona in a comfortable 4-1 win at Las Palmas, while Cristiano Ronaldo scored a pair of goals for Madrid in a 4-1 home victory over Sevilla. Madrid scored with an unusual goal by Nacho Fernandez, who sent a quickly taken free kick into the net while the Sevilla defence and goalkeeper were preparing to set up a wall. The results left the rivals even on points, with Barcelona ahead on the head-to-head tiebreaker. But Madrid can retake sole possession of the lead on Wednesday when it plays at Celta Vigo in a game postponed from February. Madrid needs four points from its last two games to secure the title regardless of

Barcelona’s result against Eibar at home next weekend. Madrid’s final game is at Malaga. “In these next two games we need to keep doing the same thing that we have been doing so far,” Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said. “It’s what has taken us this far.” Madrid is trying to win its first league title since 2012, while Barcelona is seeking its third straight La Liga trophy. Atletico Madrid secured third place and an automatic spot in next season’s Champions League with a 1-1 draw at Real Betis, while Sevilla guaranteed fourth place and a chance to reach the European competition through the playoffs. Sporting Gijon became the third and final team to be relegated despite a 1-0 win at Eibar. It needed Leganes to lose at Athletic Bilbao, but the recently promoted club drew 1-1 to remain in the top division for a second straight season. Deportivo La Coruna also

Zidane’s team was coming off an intense midweek match against Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League, when it advanced to set up a final against Juventus. It was the third straight game without a win for Jorge Sampaoli’s Sevilla, which contended for the title for most of the league.

Villarreal, Athletic and Real Sociedad are the teams still fighting for the two Europa League spots. REAL MADRID 4, SEVILLA 1 Madrid kept its title chances in its own hands thanks to the win over Se-

villa at the Santiago Bernabeu. Nacho opened the scoring 10 minutes into the match by catching the Sevilla defence by surprise with his free-kick shot. Nacho sent it into the back of the net as goalkeeper Sergio Rico only watched. “It was a matter of quick thinking,” Nacho said. “I saw that the players were out of position and I decided to take the shot.”

Ronaldo added to the lead in the 23rd and scored again in the 78th after Stevan Jovetic had pulled Sevilla closer with a goal early in the second half. Toni Kroos closed the scoring in the final minutes. Madrid, playing without many regular starters, reached 62 straight games scoring at least one goal, surpassing the mark set by Bayern Munich from 201314.

LAS PALMAS 1, BARCELONA 4 Barcelona cruised to victory over Las Palmas to stay in front, and now it starts hoping for a Madrid setback. Neymar and Luis Suarez scored a goal each in the first half, and the Brazilian striker added two more in the second. Las Palmas scored its lone goal with Pedro Bigas when the score was 2-0 to Barcelona. “We played a smart game,” said Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, who couldn’t count on defenders Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano because of injuries. “It wasn’t an easy match.”

Spurs beats Man United in stadium finale to secure 2nd spot By ROB HARRIS AP Global Soccer Writer LONDON (AP) — Tottenham signed out of White Hart Lane, and Hull left the Premier League. Yesterday’s results meant there’s only Champions League qualification at stake entering the final week of the season. Tottenham locked down second place by beating Manchester United 2-1 in its final game before leaving its north London home of 118 years. Tottenham’s hopes of catching newly crowned champion Chelsea ended a week ago, but it was still able to secure its highest finish in 54 years. Tottenham’s triumph ended Jose Mourinho’s hopes of United making the top four, leaving three teams chasing the last two Champions League spots: Liverpool, which beat West Ham 4-0

on Sunday, Manchester City and Arsenal. The three relegation spots have also been filled. Hull joined Sunderland and Middlesbrough in dropping into the second tier after losing 4-0 at Crystal Palace. TOTTENHAM 2, MANCHESTER UNITED 1 Tottenham is leaving White Hart Lane after completing its best campaign at the stadium for more than a century. Spurs are due back on the site in a new 61,000-seat stadium in August 2018, after a season at Wembley. This was the perfect send-off. Victor Wanyama’s sixth-minute header set the tone for a carnival atmosphere and Harry Kane added his 28th goal of the season at the start of the second half. United captain Wayne Rooney pulled one back but Tottenham held on

to win before a ceremony, featuring past and current players, to bid farewell to the stadium. The players are now looking to the future. By the time they are playing in the new home, they’ll hope to have delivered Tottenham’s first league title since 1961. “It’s been a progression from (third) last season,” Kane said. “We’ve just got to keep it going, keep working hard, keep getting better and hopefully next season we’ll finish first. “To finish strong and finish unbeaten here is something special.” It wasn’t so memorable for the “Special One,” with Mourinho’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League with United now resting on beating Ajax in the Europa League final later this month. “We know that it is a big objective, we know that if we lose the

final we don’t play Champions League,” said Mourinho, who has already collected the League Cup. “But we fight for titles and probably other clubs finishing in the top four, probably they would like to be in our position to try to fight for a title.” WEST HAM 0, LIVERPOOL 4 Philippe Coutinho set up Daniel Sturridge before adding a superb double of his own. Divock Origi completed the rout with a tap-in as Liverpool ensured it will qualify for the Champions League, regardless of other results, by beating relegated Middlesbrough in next Sunday’s season finale. CRYSTAL PALACE 4, HULL 0 Crystal Palace manager Sam

Allardyce maintained his status as a survival specialist, having never been relegated in management. “I said to myself this would be the hardest one, given the quality of the teams we had to play on the run-in,” Allardyce said. “If you’ve got the label, you accept it (as a firefighter), but building for the future relieves the stress on you. I wouldn’t want to keep fighting relegation at the end of every season. It’s about building for the future.” Marco Silva couldn’t save Hull, though, in his five months in charge. Hull makes an instant return to the League Championship. Hull never recovered after gifting Wilfried Zaha a third-minute goal. It was followed by Christian Benteke’s header, Luka Milivojevic’s 85th-minute penalty and Patrick van Aanholt’s late strike.

JUVENTUS WASTES CHANCE TO CLINCH TITLE WITH 3-1 LOSS AT ROMA By ANDREW DAMPF AP Sports Writer ROME (AP) — Juventus wasted a chance to clinch a record sixth straight Serie A title with a 3-1 loss at rival Roma yesterday. Stephan El Shaarawy put Roma 2-1 ahead early in the second half with a long, low shot that was deflected by Juventus fullback Stephan Lichtsteiner. Radja Nainggolan added another for the hosts to hand the Bianconeri their first league loss since a defeat to Fiorentina in January. Mario Lemina was set up by Gonzalo Higuain to give Juventus the lead midway through the first half but Daniele De Rossi equalized for Roma four minutes later. With two rounds remaining, Juventus’ lead over Roma was reduced to four points. Napoli is third, one point further back, after its 5-0 rout of Torino earlier. “You can’t always be at your maximum,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “We just have to stay as calm as possible and we’ll achieve our goal.”

It was the third straight match in Serie A that Juventus failed to win, after draws with Atalanta and Torino. Juventus’ last two matches are against relegation-threatened Crotone and Bologna. Since Serie A was founded in 1929, no club has won more than five straight titles. Set to face Lazio in the Italian Cup final on Wednesday and Real Madrid in the Champions League final next month, Juventus is aiming for a treble. Perhaps with those fixtures in mind, Allegri rested standout playmaker Paulo Dybala. After a strong start from Roma, Juventus fullback Kwadwo Asamoah hit the post seven minutes into a fast-paced first half. Higuain met a long pass from Stefano Sturaro at the edge of the goalbox with a volley that enabled Lemina to bang the ball in. Then De Rossi knocked in a closerange rebound from a header by Kostas Manolas. Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon appeared confused by Lichtsteiner’s

deflection when he was beaten by El Shaarawy’s shot, which deflected in off the far post. Nainggolan, who had been a questionable starter due to a calf injury, then traded passes with Mohamed Salah before evading two defenders — including former Roma teammate Miralem Pjanic — to beat Buffon inside the near post. Allegri sent on Dybala after falling behind 3-1 and the Argentina international appeared to have earned a penalty in added time but the referee said to play on. “This was a huge win, especially because we were able to stay ahead of Napoli,” De Rossi said, referring to the race for second and the final direct entry to the Champions League group phase. “There were a thousand difficulties,” De Rossi said. “We knew that (Juventus) needing only a draw, if they wanted to defend or close down that they’re experts at that. ... So tonight it’s just happiness and joy. We can’t stop trying although we’ve got to be realists.”

MONACO ROUTS LILLE 4-0 TO EFFECTIVELY SEAL FRENCH TITLE By JEROME PUGMIRE AP Sports Writer PARIS (AP) — Monaco celebrated a century of league goals with a win that all but sealed the French title, beating Lille 4-0 on Sunday to leave defending champion Paris Saint-Germain needing a spectacular Monaco collapse. Monaco leads by three points with a goal difference that is +17 better than that of PSG, and also has a game in hand. PSG needs to win its last match and hope Monaco loses its remaining two games by huge margins. Top scorer Radamel Falcao scored twice and attacking midfielder Bernardo Silva added one to make it 101 league goals and 153 in all competitions for Monaco. Monaco can officially raise the trophy with a draw at home to Saint-Etienne on Wednesday — hardly a fearsome prospect. PSG won 5-0 at Saint-Etienne on Sunday, with striker Edinson Cavani scoring twice to reach 35 league goals. Brazilian winger Lucas also got two and Germany winger Julian Draxler completed the scor-

ing late on. It was a sad farewell to fans for SaintEtienne coach Christophe Galtier, taking charge of his 359th game and his last one at home before leaving at the end of the season. The popular Galtier even got a sympathetic hug from PSG left back Maxwell, who set up Cavani’s first goal after just two minutes with a pinpoint cross. Over at Stade Louis II, Falcao headed in Thomas Lemar’s cross from the left in the sixth minute to reach 20 league goals for the fourth time in his career. Last season, he got just one during a miserable loan spell at Premier League Chelsea. The second goal came on the stroke of halftime. Bernardo Silva fed forward Kylian Mbappe down the right, and the 18-yearold showed tremendous pace to surge past defender Franck Beria and then return the pass for Silva to thump home. After it went in, Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim — normally a reserved character — jumped off the bench and pumped his fist vigorously as he shuffled along the touchline.

Strategy, teamwork help Hamilton win Spanish GP over Vettel BARCELONA (AP) - Thanks to superior strategy and some help from his teammate, Lewis Hamilton tightened the early title race in Formula One after beating Sebastian Vettel to win the Spanish Grand Prix yesterday. Hamilton saw his advantage of a pole position evaporate when Vettel beat him to the first corner, but Mercedes’ decision to have Hamilton finish the race on faster tyres allowed the British driver to overtake the Ferrari with more than 20 laps left. Hamilton would have had to leave his challenge until late if not for some assistance from teammate Valtteri Bottas, who held up Vettel before the Finn’s Mercedes broke down in a puff of smoke. “This was the rawest fight I have felt in a long time. This is what the sport is meant to be, this is why I race - to have battles with him for the championship,” Hamilton said. “I just really have to congratulate and

thank my team. They did a wonderful job with the strategy and the pit stops.” Hamilton’s second win in five races this season cut Vettel’s lead from 13 points to six heading into the Monaco Grand Prix. It was the three-time world champion’s 55th career victory and his second at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya after first winning in 2014. Daniel Ricciardo brought his Red Bull across in a distant third place to complete the podium, his best result of the season. Vettel had a great surge from second on the grid, going past Hamilton to the first right-hand turn and staying in front just as his Ferrari partner’s race ended. Starting from fourth and fifth, Kimi Raikkonen and 2016 race winner Max Verstappen came together when trying to squeeze around the first turn with Bottas alongside them. Bottas nudged Raikkonen into Verstappen, with the contact damaging the front suspensions of the Ferrari

that,” Raikkonen said. After Vettel and Hamilton had both pitted, Vettel hunted down Bottas for the lead and engaged him in a lap-long duel. Vettel eventually got by on a third try, but by then Hamilton had pulled back valuable seconds. The two title rivals jousted after Vettel came out of his second pit stop just ahead of the hardcharging Hamilton. They brushed going through the first of two turns, with Hamilton going off momentarily as Vettel defended his position. The teams’ tyre strategy then came into play. While Vettel used his two sets of faster tyres first before finishing on the more longlasting but slower ones, Hamilton used his more conservative tyres after his first pit stop, allowing him to finish on the faster set. “If we had had the same tyres on, it probably wouldn’t have been as exciting” Hamilton said. “At the end I was able to manage the soft tyres.”

Moments after Bottas saw his hopes of adding to a maiden win in the previous round go up in smoke, Hamilton closed in on Vettel on his faster tyres and never looked back after going by on lap 43. “I was surprised that when I came out we were so close,” Vettel said. “I was doing what I could to stay in front, but as soon as I was alone he just flew past.” Force India pair Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon finished fourth and fifth respectively, the best result for both drivers this year. Nico Hulkenberg (Renault), Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso), Pascal Wehrlein (Sauber), Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) and Romain Grosjean (Haas) rounded out the points.
