ith the 2,500 seats for the fans erected, all that’s left is the VIP stand, press centre and the actual beach soccer pitch and the Bahamas Football Association will be prepared to take on the world. The local organising committee for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 took the media on a tour of the new $2.5 mil-

lion facility being constructed at the foot of the Sir Sidney Poitier Bridge. The tour took place on the 100-day countdown to the FIFA Beach World Cup, scheduled for April 27 to May 7. In preparation for the prestigious event, the BBF will host the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier February 20-27. A total of 16 teams from the

Caribbean Football Union (CFU): Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, US Virgin Islands - North America: Canada, Mexico, United States - Central American Football Union (UNCAF): Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Panama, are expected to participate in the

CONCACAF tournament. From the tournament, two additional CONCACAF teams will join the Bahamas as the three CONCACAF representatives in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017. “This countdown is a significant part of our efforts towards

Team Bahamas off to Argentina to prepare for CONCACAF qualifier

ON FORM: The Bahamas Football Association men’s beach soccer team, currently travelling to Argentina in preparation for the CONCACAF qualifier next month and the FIFA World Beach Soccer Cup in April, is being coached by Alexandre Soares, assisted by Stephen Bellot. The team is comprised of the following players: Ivan Rolle (goalkeeper), Valin Bodde (goalkeeper), Nesley Jean, Kyle Williams, Tim Munnings, Gary Joseph, Lesley St Fleur, Gavin Christie, Dwayne Forbes and Alex Thompson.

THE Temple Christian Academy Suns outshined the Aquinas College Aces to remain undefeated in the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools’ junior boys basketball league yesterday. The pennant-winning Suns pulled off a 37-31 victory to push their front running record to 9-0 with just one game left next week before they get ready for the playoffs. “It was a little scare coming down to the end but the boys practiced and trained hard for situations like this,” said Temple Christian coach Keith Rolle. “They were 8-0 coming into the game so they know what they had to do to win. They closed out strong and now we just have to play St John’s on Tuesday at the home of the Suns, so we hope to finish the season at 10-0.” If they go undefeated, it will be the best showing ever by the Suns. But Rolle said their ultimate goal is to go all the way and win the championship. “We play good defence, but we have one of two things we have to tweak offensively and we will be okay. We really want to win the championship.” Deyton Albury led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points to lead the Suns. Christopher Sturrup had nine before he fouled out and Joshua Burrows chipped in with seven. The Aces, who fell to 7-2 with the loss, got a game high 16 from Jordan Freemantle, eight from Ricardo Smith and four apiece from Chaz Mackey and Donovan Wilson. “We started off sluggish, but it’s difficult teaching junior boys because thy want to play too much NBA-style basketball,” said Aces’ coach Lawrence Irving. “By the second quarter, our two guard had three fouls and we had to sit him down until the fourth quarter and our big men believe they are the guards of the team. “It was a good loss for us, but I personally see their weaknesses. They like to feed off their fast-break points. So I’m going to go back to the drawing board and make some adjustments to slow them down. I’m hoping that if we finish fourth in the regular season and we meet them in the playoffs, we can beat them.” Temple Christian Academy opened a quick 6-0 to start the first quarter, but Aquinas College got three straight free throws from Freemantle and a lay-up as they eventually pulled even at 7-7. But after Burrows hit a jumper, the Suns got two consecutive block shots and Jones scored on a basket to push their lead to

Strikers hand Shockers a pair of losses at Loyola Hall By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE double runners-up St Cecilia’s Strikers struck twice to hand the St Francis/Joseph Shockers a pair of shocking losses yesterday at Loyola Hall as the Catholic Board of Education continued its primary schools basketball league. In the girls’ game, the Strikers routed the defending champions Strikers 19-7 as Raynell Young exploded for a game high 13 points to single-handedly secure the win. Brianna Hanna added five as the two teams moved into a two-way tie for first place with a 2-1 win-loss record. Sammeka Hepburn had three and both Gianna Farquharson and Rashae Forbes had two points each in a losing effort.

And in the boys’ feature game, Cayden King came up with a game high 11 and Zachary Knowles chipped in with seven as St Francis/ Joseph held off St Francis/ Joseph 21-18. Nikolai Saunders had nine and Larry Daxon contributed four in a losing effort as both teams again pulled even at 2-1 in the front running standings. “We did pretty good today. We executed our offence, especially my girls,” said Strikers’ coach Devon Johnson. “They played their defence the way they were taught to play. They moved when they had to. They did a very good job today.” Johnson, however, said with just four teams entered in the league, he prepares his teams for the postseason because everybody will

make the playoffs. “I just try to get them better and better every game that they play,” Johnson said. In the girls’ game, St Cecilia took a slim 5-4 lead as Young scored all their points. They scored the only point in the second quarter. But in the third, Young came up with six points in their 9-0 spurt as they put the game out of reach. The Strikers closed it out with a 4-3 tear in the fourth. “The girls’ team is fairly new. We have just two players with any game experience,” said St Francis/ Joseph coach Ricardo Freemantle. “But they are coming together good. We are 2-1. Unfortunately we lost the game today. I think it was due to the fact that they didn’t follow instructions and not really execute the

plays. But we will go back to the drawing board and try to improve on our performance.” In the boys’ game, it was a see-saw battle as King canned all five points in St Cecilia’s 5-4 lead after the first quarter. Saunders and Joel Thompson had three and two respectively in the second quarter as St Francis/Joseph went on a 5-1 tear to snatch a 9-6 lead. Then in the third, Knowles and Raheem Thompson got three and two points each as the Strikers struck for a 5-3 advantage to trail 12-11. When it counted the most in the fourth, King had six and Knowles four as they outscored the Shockers 10-6 to hold onto the close encounter. “It was one of those days.

Media members tour the new, $2.5m beach soccer stadium FROM PAGE 1 this event,” said Jeff Beckles, the chairman of the LOC. “We are well on our way to having this facility completed for April 2027.” Over the past several months, Beckles said a number of companies have partnered with the BBF, the Bahamas Government and FIFA in erecting what is going to be the most impressive state-of-the-art facility in the region. “We want to say thank you to all of the agencies, Ministry of Works, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Bahamas Customs and obviously to our construction partners, Cavalier Construction, IBS Engineering, who have been playing tan integral role in ensuring that we get to this point,” Beckles stressed. “So as we launch this official countdown, we want to encourage Team Bahamas who is actually in Argentina as we speak, preparing for the World Cup. We want to say to the wider Team Bahamas, all of us who live in this wonderful country we call home to get ready for this event coming up.”

Strikers hand Shockers a pair of losses FROM PAGE 1 Nothing gone right down the fourth quarter,” said St Francis/Joseph coach Donnie Culmer. “The boys didn’t listen down the stretch. We made some key turnovers and missed free

throws. We played a hell of a game team from St Cecilia’s. “This is our second loss for the year. We won the Temple Christian Tournament in December, we got to the final of the Father Marcian Peters, but we had

some people that had to go away and we lost. Now this is just our first loss in here. We will be alright. But I’m glad that we lost because it can now bring them back down to reality because they were getting real cocky.”

Qualifier next month and the main event at the FIFA World Cup in April. “Cavalier has just been exceptional. The workforce and the energy and passion in which they have em-

braced this project, which is a very aggressive one, is quite extra ordinary,” Sealey said. When most people took the time of during the Christmas holiday, Sealey

said Cavalier remained on the job to ensure that the stadium is completed on time. Martin Todd, vice president of Cavalier Construction, said the VIP is already out of the ground and they’re just working on the infrastructure, which will include the media centre, will complete the facility and all that is left is to put down the playing surface. “In the next two weeks, the pitch should be installed and we’re all looking forward to getting ready for the CONCACAF Qualifier at the end of February,” he stated. Burce LaFleur, another vice president of the BFA, took the media on the tour, overlooking the construction of the soccer pitch from the top of the spectator stand. When asked if there was any particular seating area that he would prefer to sit in the huge facility, LaFleur quickly pointed out that he and his friends sat up top and they were quite impressed with the view they saw. Once the soccer pitch is completed, LaFleur said it will be quite a site to behold.

TEMPLE CHRISTIAN JUNIOR BOYS BEAT AQUINAS COLLEGE, STAY UNDEFEATED FROM PAGE 1 11-7 and they held on for an 11-9 margin at the first break. To start the second quarter, Temple Christian got a 1-2 punch from Albury and Burrows as they helped to push their lead to 16-9. It was short lived as Mackey and Smith hit back-to-back jumpers and Smith added a three-pointer to put the Aces up 17-16 that held through the half. The third quarter was the big difference in the game as Temple Christian

out-scored Aquinas College 11-1, thanks to the combo of Sturrup and Albury as they pushed their lead to 27-18 at the final break. To start the fourth, Freemantle and Wilson led the Aces to a 31-25 deficit. Another lay-up by Freemantle at end of 5-2 spurt cut Temple Christian’s lead to 33-30. But when it counted the most, Albury’s two free throws pushed the Suns ahead 36-31 and after the Aces missed a couple of attempted jumpers, Albury sealed the deal with one of his two charity shots as they held to celebrate another victory.

Six-time champions Serena, Novak win Australian openers By JOHN PYE AP Sports Writer MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The record will show that six-time Australian Open champions Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic each had straight-set wins. It may seem straight-forward, but it was not routine. Newlyengaged Williams, aiming for an Open-era record 23rd major title, and Djokovic, bidding to become the first man to win seven Australian titles, confronted former top-10 players in the first round at Melbourne Park. And so there was no chance for the No. 2-ranked players, in the recently unaccustomed position at the foot of the draw, to feel their way into the season’s first major. Djokovic faced Fernando Verdasco, who beat Rafael Nadal in the first round last year and who had five match points in their last head-to-head encounter — only 10 days earlier. Djokovic held off the Spanish lefthander in a 71-minute, momentum-swinging second set before winning 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-2 yesterday. The first and third sets were great, he said, but the second was “a gamble.”

“I’m very pleased with the first round, considering I had one of the toughest first-round draws, definitely considering his form,” Djokovic said. “He’s a quality player. He’s a big match, big-time player.” The 33-year-old Verdasco peaked at No. 7 in the rankings in 2009, not long after he pushed eventual champion Nadal in five sets in one of the best and latestfinishing semi-finals ever at the Australian Open. “From one perspective it was good that I got to have the very tough first-round match, because it made me prepare better and kind of approach the tournament with the right intensity, right from the first point,” Djokovic said. Williams, on the comeback after a stint on the sidelines following a US Open semi-final loss, took a 5-0 lead in the second set against Belinda Bencic. But Bencic has been ranked in the top 10, and was seeded 12th in Melbourne last year. She applied pressure on Williams, who made mistakes on key points — including a double-fault to give Bencic a break point, and another on her first match point — before recovering to win 6-4, 6-3. Williams became engaged to

though, by walking into her news conference wearing a shirt with the word “Equality” emblazoned across the front. It was still before midnight Monday in the United States, where the holiday in honour of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.= was nearly ending. “It’s important to spread the message,” she said. Asked if she was concerned about the future of equality in the United States, Williams declined to comment apart from saying it was “a concern for just everyone in general.” After improving her record in the first round of majors to 65-1, Williams will play Lucie Safarova, who saved nine match points before beating Yanina Wickmayer 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-1. Nadal, also returning from a couple of months on the sidelines following the US Open with an injured left wrist, has already improved on 2016. “I’m happy to do an interview with you — last year, I didn’t have the chance!” Nadal said in his oncourt interview after a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Florian Mayer. As usual at Melbourne Park, the heat was a factor. The thermostat reached almost 38 degrees

SERENA WILLIAMS celebrates after defeating Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic yesterday. (AP) Alexis Ohanian during the holiday break, and the Reddit cofounder was in the crowd at Rod Laver Arena. She has been asked repeatedly about her wedding plans since arriving in Australia, but only gave a time frame for that discussion after her opening match. “February I’ll start looking at the bigger picture of my life,” she said. “Right now, I’m just so focused that this is kind of all I can think about.” Williams made a big statement,

Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) on a day when Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic beat Dustin Brown and No. 11 David Goffin beat 19-year-old qualifier Reilly Opelka 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Ivo Karlovic was thankful that it was cooler at night, when the 37-year-old Croat fired 75 aces and held off Horacio Zeballos 6-7 (6), 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 22-20 in a match that set a record for most number of games (84) at the Australian Open in the tiebreak era. No. 6 Gael Monfils, No. 8 Dominic Thiem, No. 13 Roberto Bautista Agut, No. 15 Grigor Dimitrov and No. 18 Richard Gasquet were among the other seeded players to advance. Heather Watson beat No. 18 Sam Stosur, extending the 2011 US Open champion’s drought on home soil. US Open finalist Karolina Pliskova, 2016 Australian Open semifinalist Johanna Konta, No. 6 Dominika Cibulkova, former topranked Caroline Wozniacki, No. 14 Elena Vesnina, No. 21 Caroline Garcia and No. 28 Alize Cornet all advanced before third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska finished off her 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win over Tsvetana Pironkova just before midnight.
