Getting Healthy In Transylvania County In 2016

Transylvania County is blessed to have so much natural beauty and so many places its residents and others can go to improve their health and well-being, whether it’s hiking, running, cycling, mountain biking, rock climbing, canoeing, etc. There are also lots of people and businesses that are available to help one get in shape or continue to stay in shape. One great place to start is at the Transylvania County Parks & Recreation Department located behind Pisgah Elementary School on Ecusta Road. The Transylvania County Parks and Recreation Department is housed in the Transylvania Activity Center, which opened in 1990 and is located on a 34-acre park that includes fields for softball, baseball and soccer. The recreational area also adjoins the city of Brevard multi-use path and the city’s Sports Complex, which has a full-sized soccer field and multiple baseball/softball fields. The recreation department offers a wide variety of options — both through their own programs and through outside organizations — in the activity center. Programs include adult volleyball and basketball leagues, a youth volleyball league, pilates and yoga classes, pickelball, badminton and gymnastics. The department also directs programs at the Silvermont Opportunity Center in Brevard and the Champion Pool in Rosman. For more information about all the many things to do and programs, call (828) 884-3156 or go to tcpr.recdesk.com. The following are some of the other “Getting Healthy” options in Transylvania County:

Ageless Grace Carol Gerson, certified ageless grace educator (828) 606-9931

The Ageless Grace program — 21 Simple Tools for Lifelong Comfort — can be done by almost anyone of any age or ability. The movement sequences focus on the healthy longevity of the body, mind, emotions and spirit. All of the exercises consist of movements that are natural and organic, and are designed to be practiced in a chair. Gerson teaches the free class from 11:30 a.m. until 12:20 p.m. every Wednesday at the Silvermont Opportunity Center at 364 E. Main St. in Brevard. While walk-ins are welcome, the public is encouraged to call (828) 884-3166 to sign up or for more information. Bikram Yoga Brevard 167 Rosman Highway, Brevard (828) 577-2488 bikramyogabrevard.com Bikram yoga is a series of 26 Hatha yoga postures performed in a heated environment, and is designed for all ages and ability levels. Bikram yoga is similar to “standard” yoga prac-

tices except that it is practiced in a room that is heated to 105 degrees, with 40 percent humidity. Bikram speeds up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids; makes muscles more elastic, therefore less susceptible to injury; reduces heart irregularities associated with sudden exercise; and burns fat more easily and faster.

Brevard Health and Racquet Club 1325 Country Club Road, Brevard (828) 883-3005 brevardhealthandrac quetclub.com Brevard Health and Racquet Club offers a variety of workout options. What’s New For 2016 At Spas In Transylvania County Spas date back to the ancient Greeks but are more widely associated with the Roman Empire, which popularized them around roughly 225 B.C., according to the Spa Association. In the United States, the first actual sauna occurred after Finnish and Swedish immigrants built one in the Delaware River Valley. The spa industry “really took off” in the U.S. in 1910, according to the Spa Association, when Elizabeth Arden started her

Day Spa, the Red Door Salon in Manhattan, N.Y. In 1974, the first fitness spa opened in California, and in the mid-90s medical spas began appearing more around the country. Today, the modern spa has become a popular choice for people dealing with stress and wanting to live a healthier life in general. In Transylvania County there are two main spas — Elements Spa and La Petite Spa and Wellness.

Elements Spa 29 W. French Broad St. Suite 104 Brevard, NC 28712 828-884-2701 elementsspashop.com Elements Spa opened in 2004 and is dedicated to promoting health and wellness, using holistic wellness offerings infused with traditional therapies. Owner Patti Beggs has a 27-year career in the industry. Her talented and dedicated staff provides a wide array of natural and

organic treatments, including therapeutic massage, detoxing and immune support body wraps, energy therapy, reflexology and facial therapies that include natural alternatives to facelifts, and which are all designed to promote healing for body, mind and spirit. The spa’s treatments are enhanced by the use of aromatherapy, moist hot towel compresses, hot stones and herbal foot (Continued on pg. 4C)

(Continued from pg. 3C) soaks. This year, the spa, is excited to introduce Sunlighten Sauna three-inone infrared purifying treatments. Beginning in March, Elements will be offering educational classes in stretching, meditation, tai chi, energy healing and aromatherapy. The Sunlighten Infrared Saunas offer three levels for treating the body: far infrared, which reduces blood pressure and is whole-body detoxifying; mid-infrared, which assist in weight loss and improved circulation; and near infrared, which provides energy for pain relief and anti-aging. Full spectrum infrared saunas are an effective tool for natural healing and prevention as they utilize infrared light, which has the ability to penetrate human tissue and stimulate

the healing process assisting in overall health, according to Beggs. To stay abreast of events and wellness education with Elements Spa, follow them on Facebook or visit elementsspashop.com to sign up for a monthly newsletter. “Here’s to a healthy, happy 2016 – dedicated to wellness inside and out,” Beggs said.

La Petite Spa and Wellness 6 Park Place West Building B, Straus Park Brevard, N.C. 28712 828-883-2238 lapetitespabrevard.com La Petite Spa and Wellness is now located across from the Clock Tower in Straus Park. The spa’s staff and its clients love the serene park-like setting of the business

community. “We felt at home from the first day and know you will too,” said Pam Bingham, one of the spa’s owners. “Along with our move also came a change in our focus. (This year) will bring more advanced, results-driven skin care. Plus our highly trained, licensed massage therapist will continue to work with long-standing and new clients to achieve balance,

pain relief, stress relief and a sense of well- being.” Some new services offered: Microcurrent Facial Sculpting. This non-surgical facelift works by tightening the facial muscles and toning the skin. Microcurrent uses gentle electrical stimulation to trigger a chemical reaction at the cellular level, creating a tightening of the muscles and increasing the collagen and elastin production. Ultrasonic Facial. This treatment is used to increase the production of collagen. It firms and thickens the skin and helps the skin cells cycle more quickly, leading to clearer, more youthful looking and feeling skin. Advanced Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels – for more radiant and youthful skin. The Skin Classic – High Frequency is the affordable non-laser treatment for minor skin imperfections and is great for hyperpig-

mentation, acne, broken capillaries, milia, sebaceous hyperplasia, cherry angiomas, skin tags and more. Aloe and Herb Wraps are a healthy inch-loss program from Set-N-Me-Free. This is a toxin cleanse that creates a very definite size loss in fatty areas. The aloe solution will moisturize, tone and tighten the skin. The treatment and ingredients are safe, healthy, effective and relaxing. “We will continue to offer

facial reflexology and full body reflexology, Indian dead massage, deep tissue, Swedish, integrated and hot stone massage, couple’s massage, energy healing plus healing touch,” Bingham said. “Our goal at La Petite Spa and Wellness is to be the place that first comes to mind when you need relief for an aching back or you look in the mirror and have a skin care concern. We will always be here for you.”

Transylvania Regional Hospital Named Top Performer For Fifth Year In A Row For the fifth year in a row, Transylvania Regional Hospital has been named one of the nation’s top performers on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in America. “At Mission Health, our primary goal is our bigger aim: to get each patient to the desired outcome, first without harm, also without waste and with an exceptional experience for the patient and family,” said Cathy Landis, Transylvania Regional Hospital’s president and chief nursing officer. “This is continued validation of the quality work that we are doing on behalf of the patients we serve. I am extremely proud of our physicians and caregivers at Transylvania Regional Hospital for their part in achieving this national recognition.” Transylvania Regional Hospital is one of only 117 hospitals nationwide to be named a Top Performer by The Joint Commission five years in

a row since the recognition program began. Transylvania Regional Hospital earned the national recognition for both pneumonia care and surgical care. The hospital is one of 1,043 hospitals in the United States to earn the distinction of Top Performer on key quality measures. Inclusion on the list is based on data reported to The Joint Commission during 2014. The recognition highlights Transylvania Regional Hospital’s performance among the most diligent hospitals in the nation in following medical protocols for the prevention of surgical infections and the treatment of pneumonia. “We understand what matters most to patients and their families is the quality and safety of the care they receive. That is why we have made it a top priority over many years at our hospital to improve positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes,” said Landis. “Transylvania Regional Hospital is proud to be named a Top

Performer for the fifth year in a row as it recognizes the knowledge, teamwork and dedication of our entire hospital staff.” An independent, notfor-profit organization, The Joint Commission accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting performance standards. “Transylvania Regional Hospital has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to quality improvement and they should be proud of their achievement,” said Mark R. Chassin, MD, president and CEO of The Joint Commission. “Delivering the right treatment in the right way at the right time is a cornerstone of highquality healthcare. I commend the efforts of Transylvania Regional Hospital for their excellent performance on the use of evidence-based

Glaucoma Is The Leading Cause Of Preventable Blindness Editor’s Note: Dr. Anthony Greer, with the Looking Glass Eye Center in Brevard, provided the following information about glaucoma:

Glaucoma is one of the most common eye diseases and the leading cause of preventable blindness in the United States. Currently, more than three million people in the United States have glaucoma and the numbers continue to grow. The National Eye Institute projects this number will reach 4.2 million by 2030, a 58 percent increase. Glaucoma is a progressive disease of the optic nerve caused when the pressure inside the eye is higher than the optic nerve can withstand. The optic nerve is like a cable made up of more than one million

nerve fibers that carry the information collected by your eye (retina) to the visual cortex of the brain for processing. Glaucoma slowly decreases the ability of your optic nerve to carry this information to your brain. The disease typically has no symptoms, but glaucoma will cause a patient to slowly lose their vision. The vision loss starts with the peripheral vision and can eventually lead to central vision loss and total blindness if untreated. Thus, if you have glaucoma, you may not notice anything until significant vision is lost. Risk factors for glaucoma include people of African, Asian and Hispanic descent. Other high-risk groups include those more than 60, a family history of glaucoma, diabetes and severe

myopia (nearsightedness). Glaucoma is diagnosed by a complete eye examination, along with the aid of peripheral vision field testing and optic nerve testing. There is currently no cure for glaucoma. However, medication, laser or surgery can slow or prevent vision loss. The appropriate treatment depends upon the type of glaucoma among other factors. Early detection is vital to stopping the progress of the disease. Regular eye exams are important for all patients but especially those at higher risk for glaucoma. For more information, call the Looking Glass Eye Center at (828) 884-7320. The center is located at 188 Medical Park Dr. in Brevard.

Treating Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Editor’s Note: The following article was provided by Dr. William T. Dalton, a licensed psychologist with Hendersonville Pediatrics. Have you ever wondered why some children, maybe even your own child, seem to struggle at home or school with behavior problems, learning problems, difficulty forming and keeping friends, or suffer from more accidents and injuries? It’s estimated by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that one in every 12 children suffer from a common condition called attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This disorder is a life-time condition and in recent years it has been recognized as one of the most common behavioral health disorders in children. There is no single cause for ADHD. We do know that often ADHD is passed from grandparents to parents to children. ADHD appears more frequently in boys than girls. Although there is no single test for deter-

mining if a child has ADHD it is possible to accurately diagnosis ADHD. Information about a child’s behavior is gathered with help from parents, family, teachers and others close to a child. A health professional then reviews the information and develops a diagnosis and treatment plan. ADHD patients often experience significant improvement from proper diagnosis and treatment. ADHD treatments that have been proven to work include behavior therapy and medication. A SchoolHome Daily Report Card is a tool that is frequently used as part of behavior therapy in addition to

other techniques that are taught to parents, teachers and children. Should medication be prescribed, a child’s primary care provider or psychiatrist will help oversee and manage the patient’s medication. Alternative Healing/Medicine In Transylvania County Alternative medicine has never been more popular, according to the Mayo Clinic, with nearly 40 percent of adults reporting using complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine classifies the many therapies as: whole medical systems, mind-body medicine, biologically based practices, manipulative and bodybased practices, and energy medicine. It should be noted, however, according to the Mayo Clinic, that the “distinction between therapies aren’t always clear-cut, and some systems use techniques from more than one category.” Whole medical systems combine many practices that center on a philosophy, such as the presence of nature of energy in the body, according to the Mayo Clinic. Examples of these systems include “ancient” healing methods, such as traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy and naturopathy. Mind-body medicine includes meditation, prayer and relation therapies. Biologically-based practices include dietary supplements and herbal remedies. Manipulation and body-based practices include chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation and massage. Energy medicine includes qi gong, therapeutic touch, reiki and magnet therapy. In Transylvania County, those wishing to seek alternative medicine have many practitioners to choose from:

Local Chiropractic Care A lot of doctors would say there’s a misconception about chiropractic care. “The general public thinks we are back doctors,” said Dr. Betsy Vingle, a Brevard-based chiropractor. “We provide maintenance for the central nervous system.” It’s not just about healing back pain. Chiropractic care is considered to be an essential tool in a health and wellness plan, outside of the perception that it’s used to treat symptoms once they arise. Chiropractors say it should be incorporated into a plan as part of a preventative measure that keeps the body functioning. “Most people come to me when they’ve got an issue,” she said. “Maintenance is really where the wellness comes in.” Chiropractors treat patients of all ages, all the way from infants up to sen-

iors, assessing the musculoskeletal system and adjusting the spine to encourage proper communication between the nervous system and the body. “That proper communication encourages proper function,” said Dr. Jasen VanDyke with Ham Chiropractic Center in Brevard. “Proper function promotes health and encourages wellness.” VanDyke said there are about 11 systems in the body, from the digestive to the cardiovascular system. The nervous system controls them all and by adjusting the spine, chiropractors help those systems function properly. Chiropractic care is more common than some may think. In fact, Dr. Steve Cagen said chiropractic doctors are considered primary care physicians in North Carolina and most visits are covered under most insurance poli-

cies. “Chiropractic is really at the forefront of taking care of people,” he said. According to Cagen, most professional sports teams have a chiropractor on their medical staff, utilizing their skills in keeping an athlete’s body in top shape. “These are professional athletes,” he said. Cagen said chiropractors are natural healers and the difference between general practice doctors and chiropractors is that chiropractors rely on the body’s natural healing powers and general practice doctors rely on chemicals to heal. “The body is really a self-healing unit,” he said. Chiropractic care’s approach is generally drug free and non-surgical which eliminates large risk factors with patients, which makes the practice safe, according to several chiropractic studies.

Life insurance is a product few people want to think about. That’s perfectly understandable, as life insurance forces men and women to consider their own mortality. But life insurance is not something adults should avoid, especially if they have dependents. Many people should consider life insurance when estate planning so they can provide security for their loved ones. But life insurance is a purchase unlike any other, and people may be confused or intimidated when attempting to purchase life insurance policies.

you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

about products from various providers rather than just the ones offered by the firm company-affiliated agents work for.

“Chiropractic is really about normalizing the nervous system,” said Dr. David Dungan, who operates his practice in Brevard. Dungan said the nervous system is complex and daily stresses can throw the body out of whack by overstimulating the body and mind. Chiropractic care helps keep the body balanced. “That’s one fundamental thing a chiropractic adjustment can do,” he said. “It brings the body back to a normal state.” Chiropractic care continues to grow and become more of an overall health and wellness strategy, more than a healing tool. Transylvania County has many different local chiropractors who are passionate about their work, and are enthusiastic to share more information about the health and wellness benefits of chiropractic treatment.

Understanding Life Insurance

Deciding If You Need Coverage While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If

Buying Life Insurance Much like various other types of insurance, life insurance can be purchased from an insurance agent or via an insurance company’s website. When choosing a company from which to buy a life insurance policy, look for a company with a strong rating, as no one wants to end up being burned by a life insurance provider who goes out of business. Some people prefer to work with independent brokers who can share information

Choosing Coverage When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component

to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses. Life insurance merits serious consideration, and adults should do their homework and fully understand a policy before signing any contracts.

In-Home Care Provides Vital Service For Community Although Transylvania County is gaining popularity as an outdoor recreation hub, it is important to note that nearly a quarter of the population (21.4 percent) is 65 years or older, according to the 2010 Census. While some of those come to the area seasonally, many choose Transylvania County as their retirement destination. As such, there is great demand for medical care for senior citizens who need assistance with their daily needs or require a greater level of medical care due to their health. As families come together to make decisions regarding the care of their elder members, one of the options more and more are turning to is in-home care. In-home care covers a wide gamut of medical needs. For some, it can be as simple as assisting a person with what are known as instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). IADL’s refer to basic daily tasks such as housework, meal preparation, assistance managing medications, grocery shopping and managing bills or just providing basic companionship. For others, their required level of care may be more complicated. Inhome care also covers activities of daily living (ADL) that can include

assistance getting dressed, eating, assistance using the toilet, bathing, assistance transferring a person or with walking. Typically, ADLs reflect the patient’s capacity for self-care. There are several local options for those interested in in-home care. One of the more popular in Brevard is Tore’s Home, which opened in 1996 and now has three facilities in the area. Tore’s Home offers both in-home care as well as assisted living and extended care options. Their home care services range from the more traditional hourly care to their “Comprehensive Plan,” which is their alternative to traditional assisted living facilities. Tore’s Home has increased its staffing from 20 to 90 employees in order to keep up the rising demand for care. “The synergies between our facilities (Tore’s Home) and In Home Assisted Living (home care) have been tremendous,” said Tore Borhaug, owner of Tore’s Home. “The biggest challenge is to find enough staff to meet demand.” One key aspect of the Comprehensive Plan is that Tore’s Home Services takes on the role of an extended family. Since the program started about two

years ago, Tore’s Home has completed an array of home repair projects, such as pressure-washing decks, building handicappedaccessible ramps and providing wheelchair transportation. Borhaug said the various care options, which are dependent on the patient and their required level of care, is one reason why so many people choose Tore’s Home. “We offer handicapped-accessible transports to our clients, as well as respite care in our noninstitutionalized facilities, which in many cases allow people to stay in their own homes much longer,” he said. “We have had several people who have come into our facilities to recharge their batteries and then later moved back home with our In Home Assisted Living (Home Care) program. As soon as staying at home requires around the clock caregivers, Tore’s Home’s facilities becomes

a much less expensive alternative to staying at home, and many of our clients have taken advantage of the preferential admission into our facilities for this reason.” Another local option is Transylvania Home Health and Hospice, which is owned by CarePartners and serves as an affiliate of the Mission Health System. Transylvania Home Health provides multiple services and therapy options depending on the needs of a patient. Transylvania Home Health provides physical, speech and occupational therapy that include exercise routines, refining motors skills and assisting with cognitive functions. Home health aides are seen as the more traditional in-home health care option as they assist patients with needs such as bathing, grooming and other daily needs. There is also geriatric care management and palliative care. Geriatric care

management assists older adults and those with disabilities in attaining their maximum potential. Geriatric care managers also serve as a resource for families of older adults and others with chronic needs, including those suffering from Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease or exhibiting signs of dementia. Palliative care focuses on helping seriously ill patients and their families improve their quality of life by alleviating symptoms, pain and stress. “Transylvania Home Care and Hospice delivers compassionate, high-quality care to patients and their caregivers in the comfort of their home,” said Nancy Lindell, with Mission Health Services. “It takes a team of providers to meet the healthcare needs of those in our community – all of us working together to keep people safe and healthy. Neighbors helping neighbors.”
