Continua a crescere invece l’export.
In: www.edilbox.it

World, stone and stone technologies magazine.

STONE SECTOR 2013
Prospects and opportunities for the international stone trade
English Version.
A Macroeconomic Overview In 2012, the world economic situation proved to be extremely fragile. Recovery remained modest and unequal in the various geographical areas. In the advanced economies, growth continued to suffer from the constraints caused by the adjustment process involving public finances, austerity policies and the increasing difficulty for companies to gain access to credit. In developing countries, economic activity increased faster although did not return to the levels before the world economic-financial crisis. The World Trade Organization has lowered its estimates for the growth of world trade for 2013 to 3.3% (well below the average over the last twenty years of 5.3%).16 16 SACE Country Risks updates, May 2013
What weighed heavily was the slowdown in Europe, only partly set off by the recovery in the United States. In the US, growth, which was even stronger in the first four months of 2013, was mostly due to an increase in household spending and fixed investments in the private sector. There was, however, a reduction in the contribution of net exports and public spending. The reduction in the latter in particular affected the outlook of the economy and hence business confidence. Yet the U.S. housing market marked instead a solid recovery with an increase in the price of houses. Finally, the price of energy fell and with it inflation, that currently stands at 2%. Inflation in the Euro zone also began to fall in October 2012 following the slowdown in energy prices and food prices. According to the indicator of residential property prices drawn up by the ECB17, in 2012 even property prices in the Euro-zone fell by 2% on average, though with very different dynamics between countries, and the decline in house prices was particularly high in Greece, France, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Italy. 17 ECB: Monthly Bulletin May 2013
Italy has in fact been the victim of a deep recession that sees distant prospects for recovery only towards the end of 2013. An unprecedented fiscal pressure due to the need to put the public accounts in order, together with high rates of unemployment, especially youth, have led to a collapse in domestic demand, with household consumption at a minimum since the war. The majority of companies continue to have enormous difficulties in accessing bank
credit, thereby resulting in a slowdown in investments and operations. The difficulties in the residential building industry do not seem to be subsiding, with consequences on the stone sector in terms of domestic demand. Exports, on the other hand, continue to grow. Italian exports did in fact show modest growth in 2012 (1.5%), while imports showed a significant decrease (-7%). Goods were mainly exported to non-EU countries (primarily OPEC, Japan, ASEAN and the USA), generating a trade balance, and that in December 2012 amounted to 3.3 billion Euro. Among the OPEC countries, worthy of note is the recovery in the first half of 2012 of the real estate market in the UAE. This mainly concerns luxury real estate and commercial spaces where capital has been channelled from Pakistan and Iran, in search of refuge respectively from the devaluation of the rupee and from international sanctions. Even the capital market recorded a growth over the last 15 months of 32% in the value of the shares of listed real estate companies. The outlook for real estate is encouraging and is favoured by political stability and the exchange rate regime linked to the dollar, which shelters the sector from the Eurozone crisis. An interesting investment is what the government of Abu Dhabi has decided to make throughout its territory by the creation of an international financial centre (Global Marketplace) by the end of 2013. The goal of the project is to attract foreign capital to businesses through facilities such as the exemption of customs duties on imports, taxation zero, and ease of profit repatriation. As regards the ASEAN countries, China’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 7.8% in 2012, reaching 8.3 trillion dollars. The pace of growth remained high, yet significantly lower than that of previous years. The growth of China’s GDP was in fact 9.3% in 2011 and 10.4% in 2010. Hence, China is losing to some extent its role as the ‘factory of the world’. This is a change of course also confirmed by the first decline in the flow of foreign investment in China, which fell in 2012 by 3.7% to 111.72 billion dollars. This is the first decline since 2009. The fall - as the Wall Street Journal reports – is the result of the slowdown in Chinese growth, the crisis in Europe, but also the increase in wages and other production costs that make the “Made in China” product less attractive. Despite this, China is now the first commercial power in the world, overtaking the U.S., with total imports/exports amounting to 3.870 billion dollars. In addition, worthy of note is the trend of foreign investment in Thailand and Indonesia, which rose respectively by 63% and 27% in 2012. Analysing the African continent, in South Africa the continuing unrest in the world of work, particularly in the mining and energy sectors, is likely to undermine the perception
of foreign investors and curb the full potential of South Africa, dependent to a significant extent (especially from the point of view of employment) on the performance of the mining-quarrying sector. Finally, North Africa continues to be an excellent source for the imports of raw materials and an important market for exports and for construction companies.
The International Construction Industry In recent years, global construction market activity has focussed mainly on the Asian continent. According to CRESME data, while in 2000 only 30% of world spending in the construction market concerned Asia, in 2012 the percentage increased to 46%. Asia is now the centre of the construction world thanks mainly to countries like India, Indonesia and China. It should be noted that the Chinese construction market, while experiencing a slowdown due to the constraints imposed by the central government such as loans to construction companies in order to slow down the run in house prices, continues to produce and consume more than half of the world cement (1.5 billion tons). India, on the other hand, is witnessing a boom in investment, especially in the metropolitan areas of its major cities. Finally, Indonesia now ranks among the top 15 world markets. In the Eurozone, by contrast, 2012 saw a drop in production in the construction sector of 7.1% and 3.7% if all 27 EU countries are considered. Particularly worthy of note are the reductions in Portugal (-17.3%), Slovenia (-14.8%) and the UK (-11.6%). Positive results come, however, from Romania (+5.1%), Sweden (+1.0%) and Germany (+0.7%). In 2006, investment in new works accounted for 60% of total European investment in the construction industry and over 70% of North American investment (77% in the U.S.). Today, however, almost half of all investment in Europe is in redevelopment.18 18 Mura, A. (2013) Trend globali. In: www.edilbox.it
There is interesting data regarding Eastern Europe, where the construction sector is led by Russia and Poland.19 19 Source: Eurostat
In Russia, in 2012, construction work was carried out to the tune of five, 711, 8 billion roubles (at the average rate of 184.489 billion U.S. dollars) (+2.4% compared to 2011), 235,763 buildings were constructed for a total 103,924.1 thousand square metres, and of these 93.3% were for residential purposes. In 2012, 826,800 new apartments were built, that is 5.3% more than in 2011. This trend is expected to continue to grow in 2013 too, also because according to the Federal Targeted Investment Program, approved by the Ministry of Economic Development, in
2012 755.3 billion roubles were allocated, of which 719 billion from the federal budget, for the design and construction of buildings20. 20 ICE data
It is interesting to note that, according to the ICE, in 2012 the production of natural stone in Russia could only cover 53% of domestic demand, while the other 46% was imported and there are currently less than one hundred Russian companies involved in the extraction and processing of natural stone. In Poland, a number of important real estate investments are underway such as the construction of new residential districts in Warsaw North and the centre with commercial and recreational spaces at Chopin airport for an investment value, partly funded by European contributions, of 10 billion Euro. Growth in the construction sector in Turkey in the fourth quarter of 2012 showed a rising trend compared to the same period of the previous year of 11.5% in terms of turnover and 0.6% of production.21 21 Turkish statistical Institute
Turkish companies in the construction sector are acquiring significant stakes, proving to be increasingly active. An example is the recent awarding of the $ 430 million construction project for a new terminal at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow to the Turkish company Enka. In America significant data comes from Brazil which in recent years has shown a growth trend in both the residential construction sector and the infrastructures sector, in particular due to the major sporting events (such as the FIFA World Cup 2014). In Mexico, 20 satellite cities are being built to meet the growing demand for social housing in the major demographic areas of the country. Yet in the U.S. the construction industry is growing rapidly too, following the recent devastation caused by tornadoes and floods. North Africa continues to be an excellent source for the imports of raw materials and an important market for exports and construction companies too22. 22 Source: Federcostruzioni
In Algeria, where Italy has a leading position as a supplier of materials, semi-finished and finished products in the residential construction sector, the budget allocated for new projects (social structures, major civil works, utilities, housing construction, basic infrastructures) is 156 billion dollars. In Egypt, according to data provided in the “Marble and Quarries Technology Centre,
current investments in the marble industry are valued at approximately $ 2.5 billion and significant development is expected in the Egyptian stone industry with excellent opportunities for Italian companies exporting mainly quarry machinery. Finally, Libya is expected to bring its sports infrastructures (11 stadiums) to international standards in view of the fact that the country is likely to be hosting the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. The Italian construction sector, however, is recording the worst crisis since the war. According to Ance estimates, in 2012 investments in construction recorded a decline of 7.6% in real terms and a further decline of 3.8% is expected for 2013. The final collapse has been avoided thanks to exports of large companies (which increase sales in Italy and abroad), investments in renewable energy systems and housing renovation (79.6 billion against 57.3 for new builds).23 23 Source: Cresme
Those who are affected by the recession are mostly people with jobs who have witnessed the loss of 325,000 jobs in construction since the beginning of the crisis. In the first three months of 2012, compared to the previous year there were 240,000 fewer people with jobs and the number would certainly be much higher if companies had not made use of temporary layoff, earnings for which in 2012 140 million hours were authorised, more than triple those authorized in 2008 (40 million).
The international stone industry In 2012, 96.3 million tons of marble and granite were traded for a total value of over 21 billion Euros. These are the numbers for the international stone industry, which has been experiencing constant growth both in terms of value and quantity from 2010 to the present (see Table 13). The average unit value of products traded in 2012 amounted to 224 Euros per ton, an increase of 12.5% compared to 2011.

In 2012, world imports, i.e. the international demand for ornamental stone, amounted to a value of 9.8 billion Euro, an increase of 9.8% compared to 2011 and there seems to emerge a growing demand for quality materials with a high average unit value. In this chapter, we shall look more closely at trade in the first four countries in terms of market share, which together account for 70% of world exports. The leading figure in the international stone market is China with a market share of 32.6%, an increase of 6.3% from 2010 but down slightly if 2011 is considered (see Table 14).

N.B: Countries with a market share of exports above 2%
Source: Gtis, processing: IMM
There was a slight slowdown in the Chinese colossal, partly due to the slowdown in GDP growth, partly to the restrictions imposed by the central government on the real estate market (such as the restrictions imposed on loans to manufacturers in an effort to slow the rush of prices and thus to facilitate the purchase of homes by families with low and average incomes). The product types for which China boasts the highest market share in terms of exports are finished granite products, with a share of 48.9%, an increase of 6.2% compared to 2011, and finished marble products, with a share of 34.3%, an increase of 6.7% compared to 2011. This means that: (i) currently approximately one out of two finished granite products is Chinese, and this share is likely to increase, (ii) China is slowly gaining market share in finished marble products turning to higher quality segments, as shown by the growth of the average unit value of its exports and the increase in the value of its exports to the European Union (despite the crisis). Chinese exports of stone materials to the EU 27 countries in 2012 reached a value of almost 612 million Euro, an increase of 5.44% compared to 2011. Italy is the second largest player in the stone industry worldwide, with a market share of 13.8% that has been, however, in decline over the past two years. In particular, in 2012 the Italian market share of the world market of ornamental stone fell by 4.4% compared
to 2011, despite the fact that prices held. The market share for finished marble made in Italy, on the other hand, remained essentially unchanged in 2012 and stood at 21.2%. The shares for all other product types fell, in particular granite products (see Table 15). The Italian case will however be discussed in detail in the next chapter.

Turkey, on the other hand, raised its positions both in terms of value and quantity, yet experienced a decline in average unit values. For marble blocks and slabs Turkey held a market share of almost 40% (Italy had a market share of 18%), an increase of 16.5% compared to 2011. Its market share for finished marble was almost equal to that of Italy too, 20.5%, yet down by 3.8% compared to 2010, also due to the crisis on the European markets to which Turkey exported a large proportion of its products. Thus for some years now Turkey has been the world’s leading exporter of raw marble and a competitor of Italy. This is thanks to a growing policy of investments in the construction sector but also to the contribution of companies in terms of new production lines, innovative machinery24 and the opening of new quarries25. 24 See: Turkish Stone World, stone and stone technologies magazine. Fair Special Issue/2013
25 To date Turkish quarries number approximately 1,500, with an overall production of around 18 million tons of marble and granite.
About 40% of Turkish foreign sales are made in China, but the Turkish stone companies are also gaining U.S. market share to which in 2012 they exported raw marble and finished marble products for a total value of 193 million Euro, a 17.5% increase compared to 2011. This is a huge sum considering that for Italy the United States is
the largest market in terms of value of exports, which in 2012 amounted to 172 million Euro. The close trade relationship with China is evident, especially when analysing Turkish exports of marble in blocks, of which approximately 84% are exported to the Chinese market. This means that Turkey has become China’s first raw material supplier in terms of both value and quantity, as shown also by the strong presence of Chinese visitors to the Izmir international trade fair. In 2012, China did in fact import from Turkey 3.5 million tons of raw marble (41% of the quantity of imports from China of this material) of a total value of 587 million Euro, a 24% increase compared to 2011 and with an average unit value of 166 Euro per ton. New markets that are growing strongly for Turkish marble seem to be Bangladesh, Bahrain and Morocco. We close our analysis of the international scenario with a look at India. India has a 42% market share of raw granite exports, and this share is 23% higher when compared to 2010. Once again in 2012 the country confirmed its position as the world’s leading exporter of granite blocks both in terms of quantity (5 million tons) and value (approximately 533 million Euro), followed at a distance by Brazil, Norway and South Africa. The first market for Indian granite is by far China where India exports approximately 71% in terms of quantities. Strategic markets for stone - 2013 This paragraph highlights business opportunities for companies in the stone industry wishing to increase their market share abroad. Figure 8 shows countries that sharply increased their demand for natural stone last year, albeit starting from a relatively high value of imports (>= 25 million Euro in 2011). A country that we should keep an eye on is definitely Kazakhstan. This country has been increasing the value of its imports of natural stone for four years now and in 2012 it imported 82,000 tons of stone materials (up 11.6% compared to 2011) for a total value of over 73 million Euro, that is double what was recorded in 2011. Over 66% of the country’s imports came from China and Turkey, while Italy is only the fourth supplier country with a market share of 7.7%. Kazakhstan is now the 12th export market in the world for marble products, purchased mainly from Turkey. As for Italy, it exported about 3,400 tons of marble to this country in 2012 for a total value of 8.5 million Euro, an increase of 280% compared to 2011. Hong Kong is also an interesting market since in 2012 it imported 223,000 tons of stone materials to the tune of 80 million Euro, a 30% increase compared to 2011, as is clear
from Figure 1. Italy, the second largest supplier after China has a market share of around 20% in this country and together with China provides 82% of the imported natural stone to Hong Kong. It must however be stressed that this country is often part of a triangulation - Italy Hong Kong - China, which in 2012 saw exports to China of approximately 29% of the total value of exports from Italy to Hong Kong.

Grandi mercati di sbocco in declino: Large markets that are declining. Notes for reading the graph: The graph shows the value of imports of stone materials made by each country from the rest of the world in 2011 and its variation in 2012. The value of the x-axis “2011 Imports” shows the value of 2011 imports from the rest of the world of raw marble and granite and finished marble and granite products in millions of Euros for each country concerned. The vertical axis “% Var 2012/2011” shows the percentage variation in the value of imports in 2012 compared to 2011 for each country concerned. They are considered the countries, which, in 2011, imported stone materials for a total value of between 25 million and 1 billion Euro. The United States and China are not shown since they are outliers (2011 value of imports from the rest of the world above 1 billion Euro).
Finally, the case of Egypt is worthy of note. According to the data provided by the “Marble Quarries and Technology Center”, Egypt has a capacity of 5 million tons of marble and granite, ranking among the top 10 global producers in the industry, with potential for further development (See: ICE, Note on the stone industry and related technologies industry, May 2013). In 2012, Egypt purchased over 3 million tons of stone materials worldwide for a total value of 37.5 million Euro. Its major supplier countries are India and Italy from which it primarily purchases raw marble (see Table 16).

In 2012 Italy exported to Egypt a total of about 80,000 tons of material (of which 72,300 of marble blocks and slabs alone) for a total value of over 12 million Euro, an increase of 41% in both volume and value over the previous year. Yet it is above all the marble machinery and technologies sector, in particular quarry machinery, which may have excellent opportunities in this country since investments in the marble industry were estimated at $ 2.5 billion. In 2012, Italy is the second largest supplier of machinery and tools for processing marble for a value of $ 29 million and a
market share of 20%, preceded only by China (See: ICE, 2013). However, there are also major investments in the construction industry that could increase Egyptian demand for natural stone. First and foremost, the project that involves the construction of a residential area of 18 million square metres in the city of Sohag (Source: ICE). Among the major markets experiencing growth, worthy of note is the increase in Japanese imports. In 2012 Japan imported 834,000 tons of stone materials for a total value of 680.6 million Euro, with a decrease in quantity of 3% compared to 2011, but an increase in value of 18%, resulting in a sharp increase in the average unit value of imported materials (+22%), currently standing at 815 Euro per ton. Currently the only supplier country of the Japanese market for raw and processed stone is China with a market share of 95.3%, but given the level of the demand there are definitely areas for quality Italian materials. Currently Italy exports 8,000 tons of stone materials to Japan for a total value of 7.4 million Euro, showing a 20% decline in quantity and a 4.2% reduction in value compared to 2011 (see Table 17), that does not appear to halt even in the first quarter of 2013. This is set against a decidedly positive trend of Italian exports to Japan, as revealed by the ICE, which saw a marked increase in the month of May 2013 compared to the same month last year.

It should also be noted that, in May 2011, Indonesian President Yudhoyono launched the programme of economic acceleration for 2011-2025 (“Master Plan for the Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia’s Economic Development 2011-2025”) with the objective of growing at a steady rate of 7-8%, in order to achieve a level of income per capita of 12-16,000 USD by 2025. In 2012, Russia imported more than 877,000 tons of stone materials for a total value of 195.6 million Euro, a 15.2% increase compared to 2011. As mentioned above, in fact,
in 2012 there was a major policy of investment in the construction sector, which will continue into 2013 (see the industrial construction industry, p. 5). China and the United States are not shown in the graph in Figure 8 since they are the main markets for the world stone industry and both imported stone materials for a value of over one billion Euro. However, for both we expect a negative impact on demand if there should be, on the one hand, a Chinese credit crunch in view of announcements by the government for a prudent monetary policy and no cash injection and, on the other hand, a less expansionary monetary policy than in the past in the U.S., as announced by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke. These effects should begin to be felt from 2014.
The Italian stone industry Exports Throughout 2012 Italy exported stone materials for a value of 1,810,421,274 Euro and a total of 4,178,259 tons, recording an increase of 9.8% in value and 4.17% in volume compared to 2011, once again reaching the volumes and values of 2005 (see Figure 9).
Figure 9: Italy – all countries : volumes and values exported (quality materials)
Source: Istat. For quality materials, what is meant is marble, granite, travertine and other natural stones, both raw and processed, excluding chips, slates and powders.
In 2012, in fact, marble blocks and slabs were exported for a total of 1,380,000 tons, up 7.2% compared to 2011, and for a value of more than 305 million Euro, showing a growth rate close to 6%. This slightly reduces, however, the average unit value, which went from 224 Euro to 221 Euro per ton. (See Table 19)

The result for finished marble product exports was also excellent. In 2012, they reached 885,119 tons for a value of 815,221,431,000 Euro, an increase of almost 6% in volume and more than 17% in value and an increase in the average unit value of 11.2%, which today stands at 921 Euro per ton. The situation is different in the granite sector where, in 2012, there was a reduction in the quantity exported but an increase in value. Exports amounted to 158, 8 thousand tons of blocks and slabs, showing a decline of almost 2%, for a value close to 41 million Euro, while there was an increase in value of 3.7% compared to 2011. At the same time,
finished granite products also recorded a decline in export volumes of -2.35% and an increase in values of 3.2% for a total of 599,000 tons exported to the tune of almost 549 million euro. Italy’s excellent performance was determined, partly by exports to the Americas, especially to the USA and Canada (see Figure 10), which, in 2012, absorbed a total of 225,193 tons of high quality materials (in particular finished products both in marble and granite) for a total value of 337.5 million Euro. This shows an increase compared to 2011 of 14.6% in quantity and 27% in value, with a consequent increase in the average value unit of 11% which amounted to almost 1,500 Euro per ton. The trend in exports to the Far East, particularly China, India and Taiwan, where one third of high quality materials exported from Italy went in 2012, was positive. Countries in the Far East imported a total of more than 1,024,000 tons of high quality materials, in particular blocks of marble for more than 313 million Euro, with an increase of almost 7% in terms of both quantity and value. Worthy of note too are exports to Saudi Arabia where Italy exported about 172,000 tons of stone materials in 2012 for a total value of almost 112 million Euro, an increase over 2011 of 61% in value (see Table 20).

Among the new business opportunities for companies in the national stone industry, the Indonesian market is interesting. In 2012 Italy, exported 26 thousand tons of high quality materials there, mostly raw marble but also finished marble products, for a total value of 22 million Euro, an increase on 2011 of 28% in quantity and 39% in value (see Figure 11). Figure 11
Source: ISTAT. Processing: IMM Notes for reading the graph: the horizontal axis shows the value of Italian exports in 2011 and the y-axis that of 2012 (in millions of Euro). The line represents the bisector that is, all the points in which 2011 exports equal 2012’s. Above the bisector of the countries to which Italy has increased the value of its exports and vice versa below. Only countries to which exports from Italy are currently low (between 10 and 50 million Euro) are shown, i.e. the countries where Italy has already some commercial contacts but there is potential to gain new market share. The size of the circles is proportional to the average unit value of exports to that country. Exports of marble and granite, both raw and processed, are considered in the graph.
The average unit value of Italian exports to the Russian Federation remains high. In 2012, Italy exported to Russia mainly finished marble products for a total value of more than 40 million Euro and an average unit value of 2,375 Euro per ton. Worthy of note too is the 6% increase in the value of exports of finished granite, which now stands at around 6 million Euro. The average unit value of finished granite products is 1,937 Euros per ton, up 29% compared to 2011 (see table 21).

Finally, the growth of Italian exports to the United Arab Emirates is evident from the graph in Figure 11. In this case exports substantially consist of finished marble products for a total value of 36.5 million Euros, 36.5% up on 2011 (table 22), without considering that in the first quarter of 2013 the value of finished Italian marble products exported to the UAE has already recorded a 7.4% increase compared to the same period of the year 2012.

Analysing, in Figure 12, Italian performance according to product types shows that the market for processed marble essentially held strong and its market share over the past two years has not undergone any changes. This, however, can be read on a negative note when you consider that the world demand for processed marble has grown by 26% since 2010. Marble blocks and slabs also proved to hold their market share yet there clearly emerges a gradual decline in the granite sector, in particular in Italy.
However, it should be emphasised that while global demand for all types of products has grown significantly, Italy has focussed on a strategy of maintaining its market share. It has shown no willingness or ability to research new market niches, perhaps due to the economic crisis and the credit crunch that has made business investments collapse, perhaps due to increasing competition from other countries. Perhaps, though, also due to the lack in many Italian companies of specialized professionals such as export or marketing managers that are key to successful internationalisation activities.
Figure 12

Imports Imports, which are indicative to understand and evaluate confidence and the number of orders of Italian companies, continue to record negative figures for almost all items, in particular for granite, both raw and processed. In 2012, Italy imported 1,490,333 tons of stone materials, down 15% on 2011, and for a total value of 393,964,783 million Euros, down 6% on 2011. The reduction in imports is most noticeable for granites, both in blocks and slabs (-16%), and finished products (-17%) (See table 24).

Imports from Brazil, India, China and South Africa are falling. From India, the first supplier market for the Italian stone industry (see Figure 13), Italian companies imported 223,000 tons of high quality materials for a total value of 62 million Euros, a decrease of 25.4% in quantity and 18.6% in value compared to 2011. Interesting, however, was the increase in imports from Mozambique, Tunisia and Albania (see: Table 23).

Italy imported 47,000 tons of granite blocks and slabs from Mozambique for a value of 13.3 million Euros, up on 2011 by 13.8% in terms of quantity and 3.9% in value. From Tunisia, Italy imported more than 62 thousand tons of marble blocks and slabs of a total value of 6.7 million Euros, showing an increase of 5% in quantity and 16.2% in value. Finally, from Albania, Italy imported mainly granite blocks and slabs for a quantity of 47.6 thousand tons and a value of over 4 million Euros, thereby recording a 10% increase in quantity and 5.8% in value compared to 2011. It should be emphasised that the trade balance in 2012 for the national stone industry is positive with more than 1.4 billion Euros, showing once again the importance of the sector for the country’s wealth.

Conclusions The international demand for stone materials continues to grow. In 2012, it amounted to a value of 9.8 billion euro, recording about 10% growth compared to the previous year. In particular, there seems to be a growing demand for high quality materials with a high average unit value. This is what has led to the success of Italian exports, which grew in value by almost 10% on 2011, compared with an average annual production of about 9 million tons. However, the market share of the international market held by Italian stone products has been falling over the last three years, settling in 2012 at 13.78%, showing a decrease of 4.4% compared to 2011. This result is mainly due to the decline of the granite industry while marble seems to have kept its market share steady. The Italian market share of global exports of finished marble in fact remains stable at 21% compared, however, to a sharp increase in global demand for these products. Hence there has been no search for new market niches, perhaps because of the economic crisis and the credit crunch that have undermined business investment, perhaps due to increasing competition from other countries. Perhaps also, though, due to the lack in many Italian companies of roles such as export or marketing managers that are key to successful internationalisation activities. This report has therefore sought to highlight new business opportunities and investment in an effort to help companies who are planning to increase their market share and to identify and undertake an effective strategy of internationalization. One of the main trade opportunities identified is Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is now the 12th world export market for processed marble and has been increasing the value of its imports of natural stone for four years now. 66% of the country’s imports come from China and Turkey, however, while Italy is only the fourth largest supplier with a market share of 7.7%. Worthy of note in particular is Egypt, which, with a capacity of 5 million tons of marble and granite, ranks among the top 10 global producers of stone materials. Moreover, there appear to be excellent opportunities, especially in the field of marble processing machinery and technology (particularly quarry machinery) since investments in the
marble industry were estimated at $ 2.5 billion26. 26 Source: ICE (2013) “Egypt: Brief notes on the stone and relative technology market
Indonesia is another interesting country where in 2012 Italy exported over 26,000 tons of stone materials, amounting to a total value of 22.2 million euro. This shows an increase of 28.4% in volume and over 39% in value. Lastly, worthy of mention is Russia where in 2012 the production of natural stone varieties managed to cover only 53% of domestic demand, while the other 46% was imported. Moreover, there are currently less than one hundred Russian companies involved in the quarrying and processing of natural stone. Among the major markets, worth keeping an eye on is the Japanese market, which today is totally dominated by China. China actually holds a market share of over 95% on imports of stone materials to Japan. For China and the United States, the main markets for the stone industry worldwide, we expect to see a negative impact on demand. This will occur should there be on the one hand, a credit crunch in China (in view of the announcement of a prudent future monetary policy and no further injection of cash), and on the other hand, a less expansionary monetary policy in the U.S., as announced by the Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke. These effects should begin to be felt from 2014. A detailed analysis of the Italian case reveals that over recent years, particularly in conjunction with the start of the crisis and the collapse of domestic demand, there has been a repositioning of Italy in the global value chain with raw materials accounting for an increasingly higher percentage of overall exports compared to finished products (see Figure 14). In the early 90s, the value of Italian exports of blocks and slabs constituted, in fact, about 13% of the value of total exports of stone materials, today this stands at 22.4%.The consequent reduction in added value has obviously had a negative impact on the industry in terms of employment and the survival of small supplier companies and subcontractors.

It is therefore important to foster a process of vertical integration of Italian companies, which has traditionally been below the European average. This with a view to increasing the ratio of added value on production, especially in an industry like the stone industry where Italy has a very strong competitive advantage based on the availability of very high quality raw materials. Hence, focussing on quality, innovation and marketing is a strategy that would enable Italian stone companies to win new market niches. To this regard, it may be useful to point out that one of the markets considered strategic by the European Union is the sustainable construction market27. 27 See: Financial support for energy efficiency in buildings [COM(2013) 225]
New investments in energy efficiency in residential and public buildings and infrastructures have therefore a strong growth potential. Consequently, there is an opportunity for the Italian stone industry to claim its role as a supplier of eco-friendly products since the durability characteristics are often overshadowed by the notion that sustainable products are only recycled products. In order to provide stone companies with the tools necessary to exploit the sustainable potential of their products, IMM is developing checklists and other tools to introduce the themes of Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declarations. It is crucial to focus on art and craft work, the export value of which increased by 13.7% from the previous year, settling in 2012 at about one billion Euro. Finally, we should highlight the recent attempt by several districts of excellence in the national stone industry28 to work together in order to jointly develop national policies for the enhancement of Italian stone materials and to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and innovation. 28 http://www.gei.it/EVENTI/marmo2013/articolo%20sole%2024%20ore%2025%20aprile%202013.pdf
Allegato statistico Statistical Annex
WARNINGS FOR THE STATISTICS TABLES The following tables are based on official data provided by local institutes and/or associations. These are all governmental institutes responsible for the collection of statistics for the import-export of goods and sometimes associations of local producers or other official sources for production. Whenever the statistics are estimates which cannot be proven this is indicated each time using italics. In addition, the data provided often has many corrections and this means that updatings have to be made even on a year to year basis with a continuous review of the results. The collection of production data is becoming ever more difficult and uncertain, even for Italy. Although there are regions which use accurate survey tools there are others that refuse to make any attempt at analysis which makes it difficult for the few local sources that would be willing to.
