PLEASE READ THE ATTACHED DESCRIPTION OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES OF THE SUSQUEHANNOCK HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY BEFORE YOU RETURN THIS SHEET. If you are elected to membership, you will be required to fulfill these obligations.

WHAT IS THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY? The National Honor Society is the national organization with local chapters. Membership is open to those students who meet the required national and local chapter standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

WHAT ARE THE OBLIGATIONS OF MEMBERSHIP? Once elected and inducted, members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four areas that led to their selection. These obligations include maintaining a minimum 3.500 cumulative GPA, regular attendance at chapter meetings, participation in a required number of chapter service projects each year, and the maintaining of good citizenship and character in following school rules, extracurricular contracts, and civil laws. Students who fail to live up to their responsibilities and obligations will be placed on chapter probation. If the lapses are flagrant or remain uncorrected, membership will be terminated. There is no possibility of reinstatement after dismissal.

WHAT DOES NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY (NHS) DO? The members of the NHS serve as role models of scholarship, character, leadership and service for the student body and community. Members perform many school services such as guiding at Back-to-School-Nights, changing locker combinations and stuffing summer mailers. They serve as ushers for the All-School Play and the All-School Musical. Each year the membership votes to undertake community projects, such as adopting a family during the holiday season through Southern Community Services. Members also volunteer in other school areas as well.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP? Your membership is in recognition of your excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership service, and character. You may submit your membership as one of your activities/honors on your college application(s). The administration recognizes your achievements by granting you a Privilege Pass, which entitles you to check out of study halls and lunch to use designated NHS study areas. You will wear the blue and gold National Honor Society stole in your graduation ceremony. Most of all, your membership should give you the personal satisfaction that your accomplishments and your contributions to school and community are recognized and appreciated.
