THE CROW SHOW 2018 By popular demand, The Studio Door presents the fourth annual national exhibition celebrating the beauty and mystery of our feathered neighbors. Throughout the world, crows and ravens have taken on a special significance due to their dark presence in the skies and their surprising interaction in our communities. In folklore, they appear frequently as both the hero and the villain. They arrive as tricksters, disguised sorcerers and experienced travelers. For some, the raven is associated with death, war and evil. For others, the crow appears with great wisdom, fertility and good news. The stories are as complex and surprising as the birds themselves. Look out your window and you may spy these birds living among you. Crows and ravens are members of the Corvidea family, along with magpies and blue jays. They are found all over the globe with only the exception of Antarctica. They are considered to be extremely intelligent, social creatures. In the art world, these magnificent birds appear with meaning and symbolism. The artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creative fascination makes them the perfect subject for an in-depth exploration of art being created today. The Crow Show 2018 showcases the works of diverse, continental artists as they question the meaning of black birds in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world.

The original inspiration for a permanent public art gallery in San Diego can be traced to the PanamaCalifornia International Exposition, held in Balboa Park during 1915â&#x20AC;&#x201C;1916. Maruja Baldwin Executive Director The San Diego Museum of Art Roxana Velásquez Martinez del Campo assumed leadership of the Museum as its eighth executive director. Bringing a wealth of expertise and an international reputation earned as director of three major national museums in Mexico City, Velásquez has embarked on an ambitious program of building on the Museum’s traditional strengths to reach new levels of distinction in regional, national, and international spheres. Since her appointment, many high-level acquisitions have significantly increased the Museum’s art collection holdings. A notable milestone was accomplished in February 2016 with the installation of seven largescale sculptures in the Plaza de Panama. Under the “Free the Art” campaign, these sculptures from the Museum’s permanent collection are on public display through 2019, granting greater public prominence to the Museum and its collection.
