You’ll be soft on iSense from the moment you meet Launched only last year, iSense from Associated Weavers has been an instant hit with customers from day one. Why? Simply because iSense is the perfect combination of softness and resilience. In fact it’s so hard wearing that we offer it with a full 20-year wear warranty. iSense is a unique yarn manufactured at our dedicated plant in Belgium. Comprising polyamide fibres, it meets today’s market trend for ultra-soft carpets. iSense is also remarkable for its bounce-back qualities. If something like

a chair leg causes an indent on the surface, the polyamide yarn should naturally spring back to its original state. The collection comprises six fashionable ranges – Adoration, L’amour, Illusions, Seduction and Splendour, with Serenity taking pride of place as the best selling option, featuring a deep pile Saxony finish. All variants are available in 4m and 5m widths and more choices are planned for the collection as it increases in popularity.

Good looking display units

Grace your store with one of these elegant, well-made displays. A tombola for all six products, individual lecterns for all the ranges or, for a real quality statement, our doublesided furniture stand that shows three ranges on each side. Contact your area manager today for samples, stand prices and availability.

Still going strong after twenty years

That’s our commitment with iSense. Offering a full FREE 20-year wear warranty means that we are confident that an iSense carpet will not wear out – even when it’s been in constant use for twenty years. And in the unlikely event of a problem within that time we’ll replace it free of charge. We can make this claim because our special polyamide yarn is a fantastically strong and resilient fibre. As long as your customers treat their iSense carpet with respect and look after it, it will always maintain its original new-look appearance. Sweet dreams are made of iSense.

BUZZING! At the time of writing everyone has just come back from a buzzing show at Harrogate. “How good it was to see that the show was once again exciting; with a tremendous reception to our Diversity and the new Liberty and a great attendance by retailers from all over the country,” says Phil Hartley, Managing Director Edel Telenzo Carpets. Edel Telenzo wowed the crowd with a brand new stand, with life-size images, all available POS-material and a beautiful display of Diversity on the floor and its sister-product Liberty on a staircase. Hartley says: “We are delighted with the positive reactions we received on our stand. The new lay-out with the seating areas worked very well and the display of all POS-materials ensured that we sold dozens. Especially the new displays were a hit!” Harrogate – as always – marks the start of the busiest season of the year and as last year, things seem to be looking up: “It was great to sense optimism amongst the visiting retailers from what we all hope to be great final season of the year,” concludes Hartley.

Carpet&FlooringReview Living is easy

Enjoying the ease of living afforded by 100% Easy Clean fibre, Greystoke from Crown Floors, creates a delightfully relaxed feel in any interior, a luxurious cutpile carpet with broad appeal. In 12 two-tone heather colourways that includes a full complement of now ubiquitous grey, this new introduction bolsters the Crown Floors collection with a carpet that will look great next to any interior style, a true all-rounder that delivers comfort and long-term performance too. With an exquisite 1/10th gauge twist pile, Greystoke’s fine pinpoint finish is a cut above many two-tone ‘salt and pepper’ styles and is made from a resilient two-ply yarn that also adds extra softness. Greystoke continues the nation’s love affair for bleach cleanable carpets: “As part of our expansive 2015 introductions, Greystoke has been tuned to deliver upon the expectations of consumers who now see Easy Care styles as the de facto choice for their home,” explains James Caldwell, sales coordinator for Crown Floors. “The simple maintenance and promise of stain-free performance are draw enough for many, while the benefits of a two-ply yarn, sumptuous quality and a colourbank developed in response to the hottest home looks are just more compelling reasons to choose Greystoke.” Available in four and five-metre widths, Greystoke comes in a 1,380g/m2 pile weight for excellent levels of underfoot comfort and durability that sees it bestowed with a long 10-year wear warranty. Of course, as with all Crown Floors Easy Care carpets the style benefits from a stain warranty, in this case 15-years, and is rated suitable for Heavy Domestic applications. T 0800 0773301

Shifting Santino

Satino is luxury captured in beautiful carpet, the latest in incredibly soft fibre innovation from Balta.

Using specially developed polyamide yarns with a high number of superfine filaments, Satino makes a carpet that’s not only invitingly soft, but one that has a delightful of-themoment silk-like sheen, a truly indulgent and sumptuously comfortable carpet for modern life. Playing with the light through constantly shifting tones, the look is an exclusive one with appeal to those seeking luxurious finishes. Thanks to the durability and resilience of polyamide, Satino carpets also promise longevity alongside their beauty, the perfect recipe for success. Balta will launch this latest innovation with two developed for the UK collections in Satino Royale and Satino Romantica. With a refined colour palette in-tune with the style demands of UK homeowners, these new resilient ranges bring a high fashion look without the high fashion price tag. In 12 colours and in a 2,500g/m2 weight, Satino Royale brings a 5/32nd cutpile saxony, while sister product Satino Romantica also brings 12 colours, this time in a 1,650g/m2 1/10th cutpile saxony. Both carpets are available in four and five-metre widths on Twinback insulating backing. This innovation makes Satino carpets easier to install, even more comfortable and can help to save on domestic energy use. “There is no doubt that homeowners in the UK are really embracing super soft styles and this trend is one that looks set to be big news over the next couple of years,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Group. “With the introduction of Satino we are giving retailers the option to make the most of the trend with a range that offers incredible softness, the right look and good longevity with a price tag that leaves others a distant second.” The Satino collection will be launched to retailers at Balta’s now annual roadshow, taking place this October. Modern Mosaiq

A company founded upon tradition and heritage, Belgian luxury rug producer Louis de Poortere has dipped its toes in contemporary waters with the introduction of latest collection, Mosaiq.

NEWS

Building on the good work carried out with the release of sister collection, Mad Men, Mosaiq uses texture and vibrancy to differentiate from an impressive Louis de Poortere product stable. Designs combining delicate flower motives and geometric tribal elements have been condensed into an intricate mosaic pattern, meaning Louis de Poortere is showing signs of its traditional roots despite finding an altogether more modern realm. Louis de Poortere is famed for its classic, vintage looks, but the choice of colour tones and different levels of texture promote the contemporary vibe this latest collection is looking to achieve. Coming in eight sizes for optimum versatility, and five vivacious hues from the statement Red Max and Blue Jeans to the understated Beige and Grey Shades, a Mosaiq rug makes for a stylish choice whatever the environment. Aesthetics, however, are far from the only string to the Mosaiq bow. These stunning rugs are woven on Wilton looms from 100% cotton chenille, this finest of raw materials worked together and finished by hand in typical de Poortere fashion, ensuring an underfoot investment that is set to stand the test of time even in high traffic areas of the home. The result of an extended research and development phase, Louis de Poortere’s Mosaiq rug collection acts as a high quality, design-led introduction to an already versatile range of products. With its farreaching appeal and impressive price points, premium rug design was never so accessible. T 01505 615663 www.louisdepoortere.com

In a versatile 900g/m2 quality and felt-back finish that sees all-round usability throughout the home, the style brings the popularity of super-soft carpets to a wider audience: “There is no doubt that the silk-like look and soft touch carpet is hot right now and Genius helps to bring it to a new audience with an excellent value construction and all the softness of Eccelena fibre,” comments Birger Karlsson, sales director UK and Ireland. Thanks to the yarn’s advanced engineering, Genius is stain-resistant and comes with 10-year stain resistance and seven-year wear warranties. Himalaya peaks with wool

With the foundation of the Wool Carpet Focus Group and October’s now well-established Wool Week, industry interest in the natural and sustainable fibre is at a high and it has certainly caused retailers to re-focus attention on their wool offering.

F&X Carpets, through its Himalaya brand of pure wool, wool-rich and wool-blend carpets, is offering retailers an energetic collection of styles that it hopes will ensure wool’s positive performance messages are reinforced to homeowners across the UK. “With our Himalaya brand, which is fully supporting the efforts of the Wool Carpet Focus Group, we aim to boost sales of the natural fibre by producing stylish carpet that’s also great value and with a youthful and spirited brand that will appeal to all ages,” explains Gordon Hugo, F&X Carpets. “Wool’s ‘bouncebackability’, its easy to maintain nature and enduring resilience make it a natural choice and one we are keen to promote to homeowners seeking a blend of quality and value.” Including an assortment of twist, loop and multi-level loop piles, coordinated stripes and in a range of natural colours that relate to the latest interior trends, the Himalaya collection features valueorientated blends that help to make selected styles some of the most competitive wool carpets currently available. “Himalaya delivers great style and the natural, sustainable qualities of the fibre will always be strong reasons to consider it. With clear messages about just what makes it great, we are really excited about wool’s new outlook and being a part of its success story,” concludes Gordon. T 07976 607657

BUSINESS NEWS Acquisitive ambitions drive Victoria’s growth

Victoria’s progress in building one of the flooring industry’s leading product portfolios has been boosted with the acquisition of Interfloor – the major underlay manufacturer behind the Tredaire and Duralay brands. The acquisition of Interfloor’s underlay is a great fit for Victoria which has already added top carpet companies including Abingdon, Westex, Whitestone Weavers, Thomas Witter, Hugh Mackay, and Gaskell Mackay over the last year or so. Victoria Plc will pay £65 million for the Interfloor business which had sales of £72 million in the year to May 2015 with a profit before tax of £10 million. Geoff Wilding, Executive Chairman of Victoria, told The Stocklists: “Interfloor is highly complimentary to what we already have in the flooring portfolio so I feel very confident that we have secured the right deal. We are delighted with it.”

The industry is starting to ask ‘who next’ in regard to Victoria’s acqusiitive ambitions. “As a PLC I’m not allowed to forecast what comes next but we believe there is quite a bit of growth still to come,” says Geoff. “I can’t give you a number – we are not aiming to reach a certain level or size – but we are looking to build a great portfolio and create more growth. “The portfolio is looking very strong already – this is Victoria ‘flooring’ now rather than Victoria ‘carpets’, he added. Resilient flooring is one area where the Group is under represented though both Interfloor and Abingdon came with sub-divisions in that sector.

“We believe there is quite a bit of growth still to come. I can’t give you a number – we are not aiming to reach a certain level or size – but we are looking to build a great portfolio and create more growth.”

Commenting on Victoria’s approach of allowing their acquisitions to retain their individuality, he said: “The companies we have acquired are all good businesses with strong management teams and each is very successful in its own right. We want to preserve that independent approach and are working on the theory that if it ain’t broke you don’t need to fix it. The results will speak for themselves. We have a growing team of quality people in the flooring industry and I have to say I am really enjoying working with them. That’s not PR-speak, I really mean that – we are building a great team.” Commenting on market conditions more generally, Geoff added: “We have had a pretty positive year and I am feeling confident about the future, a view shared by many in the industry I think.” Victoria also announced a share placing to raise £44.5 million to help finance the acquisition. Investors like what they see in Victoria’s ambitious growth strategy with shares adding 12% on the Interfloor news and substantially outperforming the market generally this year.

Headlam ahead with confident performance

Europe’s leading floorcoverings distributor Headlam Group plc has reported a strong performance in its half-year results to 30 June 2015 with sales up 4% and profits up 15% amid growing confidence. Tony Brewer, Chief Executive, said: “The first half results underline the growing momentum in the UK market and particularly in our business. The group’s UK residential business has performed well and the slightly stronger like-for-like growth across our commercial activities points towards improving confidence in the wider business community. “The positive trading outcome for the first half has continued during the first eight weeks of the second half. Subject to the important final quarter of the year, the group expects to announce results for the full year slightly ahead of the Board’s internal expectations.” Revenue was up 4.0% to £313.5 million with operating profit up 14.9% to £13.0 million, from £11.3 million in the first half of 2014. The company said further gains were achieved in UK market share with like-for-like revenues increasing by 5.4%, exceeding the forecast market growth of 3.4%, and the number of UK businesses increased to 56 with the acquisition of Matty’s Wholesale Carpets in 2015.

Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Overwhelmed by underlay choices There is now an underlay to suit all requirements of the end user, including type of flooring, cost bracket, environmental expectations and even including acoustic benefits, following expansion in the wide range of product available. The Stocklists magazine thought it would be interesting for readers to hear which of these are regarded as the top sellers by suppliers and received an appropriate wide-ranging response from the industry's leading manufacturers and distributors. Kährs states that Special Underlay and Tuplex are two of its best selling products, which can be used alongside all wood flooring products. Special Underlay is a 2mm, three-layer high density/soft construction product with an integral moisture barrier. It reduces impact, air and drum sound by up to 25%, and features integrated tape strips. Slightly thicker Kährs Tuplex – a 3mm crush-proof underlay – is formed from two layers of solid polyethylene, between which flexible polystyrene granules are sandwiched. It seals out moisture and features Airflow technology, which inhibits mould growth, making it ideal for use with underfloor heating. Like Special Underlay, it also reduces impact and drum sound. Kährs UK and Ireland country manager Harvey Booth says:“Special Underlay measures 1,000mm in width and is available in 10m² and 30m² rolls. Tuplex is 1,100mm wide and is available in 33m² rolls - plus a popular 16.5 m² consumer box.”

floorwise Traffic Underlay

“Our industry generates resilient textile waste with an exciting second life application as an underlay.”

Kährs Special Underlay

Incorporating recycled PE foam, felt, blown rubber and rubber crumb underlay, floorwise has one of the broadest underlay collections currently available, it says, and states this provides several advantages and makes it one of the best underlay suppliers operating in the UK today: “Here at floorwise it is our goal to develop high-quality, high-value products across different underlay types, from recycled polyurethane foam through to felt, rubber crumb and blown rubber,” says managing director Richard Bailey. “We always aim to ensure highly competitive products and produce underlays to our own unique specification so that we can deliver exactly this. Whether the latest in lightweight PE foam with underlays such as spirit, lush and lift or traditional felt products in duet and duet supreme, floorwise underlays are always among the best performing and best value products available today.” Anglo Recycling says its Regeneration is a new concept that turns carpet waste into quality underlay, helping the planet by avoiding landfill and saving money. “Our industry generates resilient textile waste with an exciting second life application as an underlay,” says Anglo’s Andy Hall, “yet we have been slow to grasp the opportunities managing our waste more effectively can present. “Anglo have developed a remarkable regeneration process which utilises manufacturing trims, fitting waste, remnants, pattern books and progressively post use-uplifts to manufacture resilient fibre based underlays from materials that have a high disposal cost. 28 October 2015

“In recycling circles, our process is called a 'closed loop’,” Mr Hall continues. “You send us your waste - we send you back underlay. Now, a cost burden becomes a profit generator. Fibre based underlays command similar retail price levels and are becoming increasingly popular,” said Andy. QA Flooring Solutions reports its SkyWalk luxury carpet underlays have always been firm favourites in its range of the home’s “hidden heroes.” Made from high density PU foam, these are designed to provide deep, comfortable feeling underfoot and classified to BS5808 Luxury Use, performing well under pressure with an ability to spring back from compression much longer than many other underlays to help keep the carpet looking “just fitted” for much longer, says the company. For extra stability, SkyWalk underlays have a strong mesh backing to add stability and stop them from moving or stretching under the carpet. Manufactured in the UK to strict quality standards, QA states that this includes its “no-quibble, customer-friendly warranty” for added peace of mind. One of the more recent developments is the announcement that underlay and accessories manufacturer Interfloor Group has been purchased by Victoria, with chairman Geoff Wilding describing the move as providing “an excellent addition to the group” to complement the Tredaire and Duralay brands. “This is another high quality acquisition for Victoria PLC,” says Mr Wilding. Interfloor chief executive officer John Cooper says: “This is an exciting development and we welcome the opportunity of continuing to deliver strong, long term growth by being part of the enlarged group.”

Report 2015

Harrogate

Happy Harrogate! Optimism and investment on show Happy Harrogate bounced back in style with a burst of enthusiasm prompted by better business and a mood of genuine confidence across the trade. Visitors were up 9% on last year at around 3,000 for an event that has grown to over 170 exhibitors from 16 countries in 2015. Steve Depport at buying group Metro said: “The show has been excellent – it is definitely going back up to where we all want it to be. We have seen a more confident attitude among retailers who generally feel more able to get the prices they want with consumers.

“The buzz is back at Harrogate for sure. There is a lot more optimism among retailers”

Neil Valentine at Furlong agreed: “The buzz is back at Harrogate for sure. There is a lot more optimism among retailers and a lot more interest in getting on and seeing what they can do next to grow their business. Tony Brewer of the Headlam Group told us: “Things are going well. The industry is optimistic.” David Cormack at Cormar Carpets said: “My impression is that retailers are doing well and some are doing very well – in fact I’m pleased to say it is increasingly uncommon to come across anyone who is finding it tough in this market now.” This positive sentiment belies a slow summer reported by many manufacturers but while cheerful talk is cheap, manufacturers and retailers have been putting their money where their mouth is. Harrogate is a barometer of business confidence and this year it was noticeable that manufacturers are investing in more new products than re-vamps of the olds – and retailers were reported to be more enthusiastic to buy the latest point-of-sale offers. The Flooring Show itself looks more prosperous with the organisers creating a well dressed event with an increasing portfolio of quality features including workshops, seminars and demonstrations that were well supported.

“The organisers have done an excellent job in delivering a first class event – full of interest and appeal.”

“The organisers have done an excellent job in delivering a first class event – full of interest and appeal to lots of different groups, “ said David Cormack. “It’s like the old days – only better!” said Phil Hartley at Edel Telenzo.

Show director Wendy Adams commented: “We’re very pleased that the show has gone so well with visitor numbers up and it’s great to see such a positive mood across the trade. Everybody appears to be doing a lot more business than last year. “Exhibitors have made a real effort with their stands and I’m pleased to say that not only is the re-booking rate for next year very high, we have also had many requests for more space.” Wool was greatly in evidence this year and the Wool Trends showcase from British Wool, which has played such a key role in the rejuvenation of The Flooring Show last year, was further extended with superb roomsets and the support of all the top manufacturers. The new Wool Carpet Focus Group added to the occasion with their campaign “It’s cool to buy wool” featuring abundant sheep wearing shades - not to mention the wool volcano. Our next issue will have full reports on the latest and greatest from Harrogate. from The Stocklists

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

As the year marches on at a rapid pace, October offers retailers the beginning of what is deemed the annual seasonal change upon which flows the UK’s national desire to ‘cosy up’ as the nights close in.

Celebrating Wool Week

As the year marches on at a rapid pace, October offers retailers the beginning of what is deemed the annual seasonal change upon which flows the UK’s national desire to ‘cosy up’ as the nights close in.

Wool Week - 5th - 11th October - is perfectly timed in that respect and aims to highlight the many advantages of real wool at the exact point when people think of carpets, curtains and winter woolies! It is a retail ruse to hang the hat of wool upon and it is surrounded by the many activities of the Campaign for Wool and the British Wool Marketing Board

This year sheep will return to central London with a quirky day out in Savile Row, where turf will be laid and not one but two wool sheds will show the way wool is taken through the processes. Two flocks of sheep will graze amidst the smart tailors and no doubt be nonplussed by the way city dwellers seem to stare at them so much!

Not far away in a small mews house, the world of carpet will be displayed along with interiors items in a house that may once have accommodated a family, This neat place will showcase the way wool can transform boring blank rooms and make them beautiful, soften the noise, add comfort and colour and generally make it somewhere you want to be. This house is open to the public from the 5th to the 11th and is called ‘Capsu-Wool’ at 4 Clifford Street, London. Capsu-Wool is a small, stylish space where wool triumphs over the lack of square footage and shows the wonder of the fibre yet again! Talks on wool are at the heart of a partnership between British Wool and Country Homes & Interiors magazine. You will see a panel of people from wool and interiors present a hearty discussion during Wool Week - about British Wool and Modern Country Style. Think crunchy loop pile and heather tones!

Last but not least - please do not forget Woolly Hat Day on Friday 9th October - where we are joining with the Mission to Seafarers to raise money for this great woolly cause. There are woolly hat knitting patterns at campaignforwool.org if you like knitting or crafting or you can just wear a woolly hat for fun. Seafarers have a long association with wool, wearing wooly jumpers and hats to protect them in bitter cold, wet weather. Put a hat on for Woolly Hat Day and send a thank-you to our seafarers who are out there in all conditions by texting Wool11 (£3, £5, £10) to 70070. Happy Wool Week!

Best of British Wool Carpets

This month we are dipping out of our usual carpet nominations to praise stand creativity at The Flooring Show in Harrogate. Certainly there was a lot of smart, well thought out stands on display at this great event but we felt praise was due to two stands in particular.

Adam Carpets took a brave and refreshing break from tradition and focused on the very stylish characters of ‘Hugo and Ella’ and the way colours and textures and style is selected by the younger generation. The mood boards they showcased were very on trend and we have to give them full plaudits for a really modern approach to marketing their carpets.

Over at Brintons - we saw the amazing high definition weave in all its glory - wow! It has true photographic quality but in wool amazing. The simplicity of using just two carpets - a beautiful wall carpet and a dramatic floor carpet spelt a bold message for Brintons and one with amazing visual impact.

and why we like it...

What’s new and different? Sometimes very little but the important thing is finding a way to show your carpets differently. Both Adam and Brintons took a step away from the norm but both in a different way. Adam Carpets really involved themselves in the story of two fictional future consumers and it was really interesting and engaging. Brintons let the picture do the talking and in that simple move, created a real talking point. We think both did an excellent job and showed how creative thinking can make a big impact - full marks! Wool Workshop - selling benefits Wool carpets are close to the heart of the UK consumer but with prices rising and increasing competition from synthetic fibres, wool has to work a little harder to justify premium pricing. Here’s our ‘Wool Workshop’ - a selling aid to help to trade consumers up to premium products by selling the benefits of natural fibre.

SAFE

PRACTICAL Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages. COMFORT Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

DURABLE

SAFETY Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

EASY-CARE

ECO/ENVIRONMENTAL Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

THE BEST CARPET WOOL

COMFORT

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Wool Week - October 5-11 For a week in October, retailers and leading interiors and fashion brands will unite for Wool Week UK with a week of activities across the country. One of the largest public events for Wool Week 2015 will take place on Savile Row – the centre of men’s luxury tailoring in London – on Monday 5th October. As sheep graze, visitors will be welcomed to the open Row and tailoring houses event to learn how wool is used by the great British tailoring industry. The iconic street will be transformed into a green pasture, covered in turf and closed to traffic while Bowmont Merino and Exmoor sheep graze along the Row. A ‘live’ model presentation that brings together leading wool mills, Savile Row, West End and London City bespoke tailors will showcase over 25 bespoke menswear outfits and demonstrate the versatility that can be found in wool. The launch of a wool documentary, captured over the last 12 months to convey the natural attributes and benefits of wool. The film, which will be released through various channels and networks from October, highlights the safety of wool with its natural fire retardancy, wool’s biodegradability and how it degrades and returns to the soil in a matter of months a fact demonstrated by the ‘burial’ of two garments by HRH The Prince of Wales in the garden of Clarence House. Wool Week will also see the launch of a pop-up exhibition in central London called ‘Raise the Baa’ which will feature stunning imagery from landscape photographer Ian Lawson and The Campaign for Wool’s inspirational interpretation of these into highly styled interior photography. This exhibition, which pays tribute to 2015 being the Year of the Sheep, conveys the vital roles sheep and landscape play in the wool textile industry. The exhibition will also feature a selection of the products used in the interior image photographic shoot and craft workshops. On Friday 9th October, The Campaign for Wool will be supporting ‘Woolly Hat Day’ in support of ‘The Mission to Seafarers’ charity that provides care for seafarers around the world. Across the UK, The Campaign for Wool will encourage its partners and retailers to put on their finest woolly hats to raise money and support this important cause.

NEWS Well Manored

Polysafe safety flooring from UK vinyl flooring manufacturer Polyflor was recently installed throughout Ward 29, a £2.5m new dementia-friendly facility developed at Manor Hospital in Walsall, West Midlands.

Stockport based construction and engineering company MTX Contracts Ltd were asked to design, manufacture and construct Ward 29, a 1491m² modular construction made up of 31 modules which were built and fitted out off site before being lifted into position at the hospital by a 350 tonne crane. Installed by John Abbott Flooring of Oldham, Polyflor flooring was used throughout Manor Hospital’s new 30 bed dementia friendly facility which features a reception area, consulting rooms, patient sitting room, six single bed rooms and six four bed rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Polysafe Wood fx PUR, Hydro and Vogue Ultra PUR safety flooring was used throughout the ward to help keep patients, staff and visitors safe and reduce the risk of slips and falls. All Polysafe flooring ranges feature safety particles for increased traction underfoot, providing sustainable wet slip resistance throughout the guaranteed lifetime of the product. Steven Hartley, Associate Director at MTX Contracts Ltd commented, “Polyflor’s safety flooring is the ideal combination of high design and high performance. This has allowed us to create a safe healthcare facility for Manor Hospital that is less clinical and more welcoming, creating a more positive environment for patients and staff alike.” Polysafe Wood fx PUR safety flooring in the popular Classic Oak 3107 shade was used throughout the ward’s bedrooms, reception area and corridors. The Wood fx collection features 10 authentic looking wood effect designs which are enhanced by the exclusive Polysafe PUR polyurethane reinforcement for superior cleaning benefits. Polysafe Hydro and Polysafe Vogue Ultra PUR vinyl safety flooring in the Oystershell shades were chosen for the en-suite bathrooms. Polysafe Hydro features a pimple emboss for use in barefoot and continually wet areas whilst Polysafe Vogue Ultra is a robust safety floor with a multi-chip design used in typical areas of spillage. Fast finish

Stopgap 800 Wearcoat self-levelling floor compound from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has been used to renovate warehouse floors at a branch of Travis Perkins in Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire.

The removal of an existing wall in the Travis Perkins branch warehouse left a 15mm deep gap within the concrete subfloor, which J D Builders were contracted to fill. Stopgap 800 Wearcoat was specified because the floor required a hard wearing surface that could weather the high levels of daily foot traffic and movement of heavy products being sold in the builders merchant warehouse. After conducting a moisture measurement test and determining that the subfloor was dry enough to proceed, contractors primed the area with Stopgap P131, to promote good adhesion between the floor compound and concrete subfloor. Once the primer was suitably dry, Stopgap 800 was then applied. Stopgap 800 Wearcoat is a self-levelling commercial and industrial grade floor compound used for upgrading and renovating new and existing internal floors in light to heavy-duty applications, where floorcoverings are not required to be installed. It is suitable for use in areas such as warehouses and workshops and can be pump applied when working in large areas. Phil Gunia, working with J D Builders, said: “Anybody who visits a Travis Perkins warehouse will know that a hard wearing floor is essential for the work that they do. Stopgap 800 delivered just the right finish and was ready to receive foot traffic again after only three hours.” T 01538 361 633

NEWS Making it in Manchester

Polyflor, is celebrating a century of manufacturing in Manchester, where this family-run company was born and is still flourishing as a global business.

Dyeing to develop

Ulster Carpets has started building the company’s new Dyehouse & Energy Centre as part of its major investment and regeneration programme to meet growing demand.

Edward Wilson, Chairman of Ulster Carpets, commented at a ceremony on site to mark the start of construction: “This is the first phase of a major re-generation of all our Operation Facilities in Portadown. I am delighted to take the first step of this very exciting period of the company’s ongoing development.” This investment programme and regeneration scheme signifies yet another considerable commitment to continued Northern Ireland manufacturing as the company grows and progresses. Ulster Carpets has seen sustained demand for its product around the world and also expansion into new export markets. To keep up with this demand, Ulster recently boosted its permanent employment level, underpinning its commitment to the local community. Once the new Dyehouse and Energy Centre is completed, the Company will benefit from new state-of–the-art dyeing technology improving capacity by over 20% as well as increasing the efficiency of the whole process providing faster response times and maximising control.

Over the last 100 years the expansion of Polyflor’s parent company James Halstead PLC has been managed by four generations of the Halstead’s own dynasty of entrepreneurs in Bury, Greater Manchester. Established by James Halstead himself in 1915, the company’s original trade was the waxing and showerproofing of cloth for raincoats, before expanding into flooring in 1934. After chemist Bill Roberts experimented with PVC to create a practical and resilient floorcovering, “Poly-Flor” vinyl flooring was launched in 1954 when a 24 year old Geoffrey Halstead, the group’s current Executive Chairman, started up his sales operation. After persuading many contractors to move from installing existing linoleum products to working with more advanced “Poly-Flor” vinyl flooring, this investment in the market paid off as vinyl flooring soon became the company’s most profitable product. Polyflor has become the UK market leader for commercial vinyl floorcoverings with dominant market share and reported a turnover of £224 million and pre-tax profit of £42 million for the year ending June 2014. Polyflor is a major employer in Manchester, employing some 500 people across its original manufacturing site in Whitefield, Bury and its sales office in Royton, Oldham. In 2010 Polyflor also acquired a manufacturing site in Teesside and now has international subsidiaries across the world. Executive Chairman Geoffrey Halstead commented, “After James Halstead Ltd was started in 1915 with just three employees and four machines in our factory, we’ve come an awfully long way but are still close to our roots in Manchester. We’re proud to be a UK manufacturer and to have the Polyflor brand known globally as one of the leaders in the flooring industry who are “Covering The World” as our slogan says.” T 0161 767 1111

With its own dedicated steam production plant and advanced heat recovery system, the centre will be able to match supply to demand leading to a significant reduction in the environmental impact of the process, in line with Ulster’s ambitious environmental goals. The building, which is due for completion at the end of 2016 has been designed and constructed by local businesses; this is a deliberate strategy by Ulster Carpets, supported by Invest NI, to continue to invest in Northern Ireland’s economy and to support local jobs. Autumn at the Academy

Having demonstrated the numerous benefits of being an accredited Master Installer to industry professionals, the Academy for Excellence in Flooring is looking forward to an industrious autumn as flooring installers gear up for one of the busiest periods of the year. “We support all Master installers with free technical advice and whether responding to a frantic on-site mobile call or late-night email, we’ll do our best to come back as soon as possible,” says Lee Thompson, procurement and technical manager. “Of course, our Master Installers are highly trained, so rarely encounter a problem they can’t solve, but it’s certainly reassuring to know that help is there if it’s required.” Master Installers are among the industry’s most highly trained professionals and as such are in high demand from homeowners looking for a professional manufacturer-backed service. All Master Installers can offer a two-year workmanship warranty on installations of Quick-Step flooring and that’s alongside product guarantees that are some of the best in business. Listed on the Quick-Step website, www.quick-step.co.uk, Master Installers now number several hundred, but with demand for their services at an all time high, the Academy is encouraging any installer wanting to gain a professional advantage to undertake the three day Master Installer course. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk 48 October 2015

Underlay options

Underlay can be the un-sung hero of your bottom line as one of the few opportunities for retailers to grow business when carpet sales are slow. How resistant are consumers to paying more to replace their underlay? Is underlay over-priced or have the recent budget ranges made it more saleable?

Do the latest ‘posh’ products have a place in your portfolio for customers who just want the best? But are all the extra products from manufacturers helping you to sell more – or are they just confusing the market? How important are point-of-sale systems to demonstrate the benefits of underlay underfoot? And where do you stand on PU versus rubber – does your preference match the consumer’s choice? Inform the industry and let us know what you think….

Flooring Factsheet Adhesives

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.greendalecarpets.co.uk Contact: Rob Harding Tel: 01432 852000 Fax: 01432 852005 rharding@greendalecarpets.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 56

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

• shedding • pulled loops

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 58

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Tip Sheared

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
