Introducing Scorpius. The brightest star in the Invictus constellation New Invictus from Associated Weavers was launched last autumn to resounding acclaim from the trade. So much so that we are now adding the new style Scorpius to this unique collection. Scorpius features eleven plain colours, all at the height of fashion for today’s interiors. This is another example of our technical ability to combine the softest polypropylene yarn with deep-down durability.

Yet, at just 1190 grams, Scorpius remains the most competitively priced product in the Invictus range. Just to add a sting to the tail, there’ll be two more exciting newcomers to Invictus this year. Make 2016 the year that you added heather shades Perseus and Pegasus, as well as subtle plains Orion and Sirius and now Scorpius, to the collection of rising stars in your showroom.

Big benefits for even stronger sales

Scorpius is the softest polypropylene carpet available anywhere today. Most carpets are only available in 4m and 5m widths but Scorpius is a multi width carpet in 2m, 2.5m, 3m, 4m and 5m variants. It has a lustrous, stain-resistant finish with high bulk to give it a true competitive edge. As with all of the Invictus range, Scorpius is manufactured from 100% bleach-cleanable polypropylene, crafted from our unique iVinci SDO StainAway yarn, with a 20-year stain and wear warranty. Our hero-image Maori is famed for his worshipping of the stars. The reason he looks so worried is that he knows that Invictus is rapidly becoming more invincible than he is. This is your invitation to follow the fortunes of our big stars of the future.

How to make Scorpius your star turn

Good presentation of Invictus in your showroom with our distinctive POS display unit will ensure that it becomes a star turn in 2016. We’ll also be adding another display unit to make sure that further new ranges get off to a flying start against the competition. In particular, look out for Hercules Twist and Hyperion, coming soon. Make sure that everyone can see the benefits by ordering a display unit through your area manager, who will be visiting your showroom to give you all the good news.

ON SHOW! During the successful trade shows DOMOTEX and the January Furniture Show, Edel Telenzo presented the new Barbican stripes. The collection now features six two-tone plains and six matching stripes. The trend colour blue can be found in the new stripe St Ives and for those looking to make a statement on the floor, the new stripe Candy Cane offers a beautiful combination of green, blue and red (shown in image). Beautiful combinations can be made by fitting e.g. a plain in the hall and one of the stripes on stairs. Additional colours were also presented in the Lawrence, King’s Cross and London Bridge collections. The three collections present good value for money and are available in beautiful neutral greys and beiges making them suitable for every room in the house.

Carpet&FlooringReview Going grey

Crafted from Extra Strong Easy Care fibre for assured performance throughout the home, Crown Floors’ Langholm carpet makes a wise choice for any homeowner, but it’s the on-trend colours that means this style is the talk in stores around the country. Introduced late last year as part of a major overhaul to the Crown Floors collection, Langholm delivers a palette of 12 on-trend colours, reflecting the very latest in home interior style. “There is no doubt that over the last year or so we’ve seen a marked departure from the dominance of beige and while in previous years there may have been the appearance of one or two greys within a collection, Langholm features a remarkable eight shades,” comments James Caldwell, sales coordinator. Alongside four neutral tones, hues such as Blackcap, Grey Lace, Cloud Castle and Spotlight mean that homeowners can find their perfect shade of grey. Subtle nuances will bring both classic and modern homes stylish carpet, backed by a Heavy Domestic rating that makes Langholm a great choice throughout the home. With Easy Care Extra Strong offering more softness, better recovery and excellent durability, this style is set to become a Crown Floors classic. Supported by a 15-year stain promise and 10-year wear warranty, the 44oz style features on Crown Floors’ new tomobola, as well as on updated wall units and lecterns. Sensational success

Cormar Carpets, has launched the heavyweight champion of its hugely successful Sensation family of carpets – the brand new Sensation Supreme.

Sensation Supreme is the fifth member of the easy clean Sensation portfolio and, as with the other ranges, is made from 100% two ply Luxelle soft polypropylene. However it is the combination of a deep pile in a heavier pile weight and the extra twist in the yarn which gives the range a unique, distinctive, luxurious look and feel. “We’ve had great success with our Sensation carpet collections over the past four years,” said David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets. “Building on that success we’ve worked hard to develop Sensation Supreme which is a heavyweight, deeper pile carpet that capitalises on the ‘soft touch’ trend with an added ‘twist’. We believe this latest addition will give retailers even more reasons to promote the Sensation qualities.” The mix of popular plain and heather shades comes in a palette of greys, taupes, beiges and neutrals, in 4 and 5 metre widths and is expected to retail at around £28 per sq metre. All Cormar’s wool twist, wool loop and easy clean polypropylene ranges are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet. NEWS Jigsaw pieces

Decorative Polysafe safety floor from UK vinyl manufacturer Polyflor was installed at Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s new Jigsaw Building where the Oncology, Haematology and Women’s Health departments are now based.

2600m² of Polysafe Wood fx PUR and Polysafe Modena PUR sheet vinyl safety flooring was installed by Floorsure (Southern) Ltd of Havant, Hampshire who worked closely with the main contractor Brymor Construction Ltd on this £5.7 million Jigsaw Building project. The design-led safety flooring with built-in slip resistance was fitted throughout circulation areas, corridors, treatment rooms and reception areas. The use of the high clarity timber effect Polysafe Wood fx in American Oak and neutral toned Polysafe Modena in Gypsum with its sophisticated micro-granite decoration helped provide a homely and less clinical environment in the Jigsaw Building. Providing sustainable wet slip resistance in busy, public areas where there is a risk of water spillage, both the Polysafe Wood fx and Polysafe Modena heavy commercial grade floorcoverings are suitable for high traffic areas in the healthcare sector. Both of these design-led safety flooring ranges incorporate clear aluminium oxide safety particles through the performance layer of the vinyl which are virtually invisible to the naked eye, ensuring an attractive yet safe floor finish for use in commercial or residential areas. Make a splash

Polysafe safety flooring from Polyflor was recently used to help return Lido Ponty, the National Lido of Wales in Pontypridd, to its former glory as part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s £6.3m restoration project. Lido Ponty is a Grade II listed lido, originally built in 1927, which has now been transformed into a modern outdoor pool and adventure play park by main contractors Kier Construction. The Polysafe Arena PUR and Polysafe Modena PUR safety flooring ranges which offer sustainable slip resistance in accordance with HSE guidelines were installed by flooring contractors CS Flooring Solutions at Pontypridd’s new visitor attraction. Suitable for busy commercial environments where there is a high level of footfall, Polysafe Arena PUR in the Cement design was installed in The Waterside café and the visitor centre where the lido’s rich heritage is showcased, whilst Polysafe Modena PUR safety flooring in the Blue Quartz and Andesite shades was used in back of house zones and the centre’s busy reception area. Both of these design-led safety flooring ranges incorporate clear aluminium oxide safety particles through the performance layer of the vinyl which are virtually invisible to the naked eye, ensuring an attractive yet safe floor finish for use in commercial or residential areas. The Polysafe Arena range replicates on-trend stone, textile and abstract designs whilst the Polysafe Modena collection features a sophisticated micro-granite decoration in a selection of neutral and bright shades. Amy Griffiths, Assistant Site Manager on the Lido Ponty project comments: “Thanks to the Polysafe Arena and Modena ranges we were able to create a safe and sustainable slip resistant environment for visitors without having to compromise on our creative vision for the interior design.” The Polysafe Arena and Modena ranges are also enhanced with Polysafe PUR polyurethane reinforcement which is cross linked and UV cured so these floorcoverings are easily maintained for reduced life cycle maintenance costs. Back to the future

Placing modern twists on vintage classics is the 2016 mantra for premium rug producer Louis de Poortere as it continues to take rug creativity to new levels, delivering design innovation and premium quality within each of its striking collections. A brand continually looking to evolve and improve, the de Poortere design hub has taken a bold step as we look ahead to Spring/Summer 2016 and beyond. Traditionally a vintage brand with classic intricate designs aplenty, for the new design season Louis de Poortere has incorporated contemporary twists on old favourites in a slightly leftfield departure from the norm, with new collections Mad Men and Mosaiq. Holding designs inspired by the golden boys of the 60s responsible for some of America’s most recognisable brand images, Mad Men rugs are loud and ready to make a statement in high-end residential applications, achieving its ambitions in a less subtle fashion than Louis de Poortere pieces that have gone before. Joining Mad Men for 2016 is sister collection Mosaiq, once more unmistakably de Poortere yet with a sprinkling of contemporary magic dust in order to seduce onlookers. Adding weight to an already impressive portfolio, this new modern realm is further explored with an explosion of tones and textures, from the vibrant Red Max to the snappy Blue Jeans. 100% cotton, there are few flatwoven additions that can hold their own when compared to Mosaiq, a worthy partner to Mad Men and the perfect symbolisation of Louis de Poortere’s latest exploits. Satino stars

The sublime softness and lavish luxury found in the Satino collection from Balta Broadloom can now be given the room they deserve thanks to two powerful point of sale concepts.

With the ease of large sample cards packed full of inspiration and the dramatic presence of a striking double-sided lectern, retailers are given the freedom to make the most out of Satino Royale and Satino Romantica in the way that works best for them. The oversize sample cards feature the striking aspirational imagery that has marked the Satino campaign as one at the cutting edge of carpet promotion, containing swatches of all colours found within both ranges. Displaying product advantages as well as giving consumers the chance to feel the quality and luxury of Royale and Romantica for themselves, these sample cards store away easily making them great for retailers tight on space.

Fine FloatWeave

The new Royal Borough FloatWeave collection is now available from Royal Warrant holders Axminster Carpets.

For over 250 years Axminster Carpets have been famed world-wide for beautiful carpets and outstanding design – and the Royal Borough Floatweave Collection uses this rich heritage with outstanding design to create a collection that will transform any interior into an elegant and sophisticated space. Designed and woven in Axminster using only the finest 100% British wool, The Royal Borough Collection combines the natural beauty of undyed wool and contemporary colours with a variety of textures to give a carpet that is interesting to the eye, high performing and also soft to the touch. Featuring classical forms and ornate patterns each design draws from the rich design heritage of London – the Windsor from the enduring Arts and Crafts style; Kensington from the geometric designs typical of the 1960s while the Chelsea gives a distinct nod to the decorative plasterwork found in many Victorian interiors – to create a marketleading collection that provides wonderful decorative interest across the whole range.

For stores with a bit more room to spare, the Satino double-sided lectern makes a sensible choice. Adorned with the same aspirational images, the lectern features 18x18” samples of each colour available, with Romantica on one side and the even more luxurious Royale on the other. Sample books hang underneath for loan, or to see how the beautiful silk-like carpets look ‘down’. The lectern is a great way to make the most of this on-trend collection and is sure to make Satino a star feature of any store. Both oversized sample cards and lecterns are available from Balta Broadloom now so that you can start 2016 off with a bang! T +32 56 62 22 11

NEWS Handling the hotspots

A year since Unilin started producing vinyl in Wielsbeke, intensive testing by the dedicated R&D team has shown that its Quick-Step Livyn vinyl floors are even more resistant to temperature changes than initially assumed.

LVT floors are composed of thermoplastic materials. This means that they tend to expand in warm conditions, and shrink in cold environments. This can result in warping and open joints. Local hotspots, like big, south-facing windows are critical for most LVT click flooring. That’s why, over the last few years, Unilin has been focusing intensively on making its LVT flooring as heat resistant as possible. As a result, Unilin elevates vinyl flooring to a high performance floor solution. “Last year, we claimed that Unilin LVT was stable in all standard situations,” says R&D Director Laurent Meersseman. “Since then, we have gained a lot more insight and expertise into vinyl flooring. Ever since we started producing vinyl at our new factory in Belgium, various tests have confirmed that our product is even more stable than initially assumed. Today, we can say with certainty that Unilin offers the most stable LVT for floating installation on the market. “To achieve this exceptional heat resistance, we have focused on ‘four pillars of stability: in-house research and development of all the floor’s components, full control over the production process through vertical integration, our expertise in developing the best and most-used click system in the world, and a clear focus on quality through in-house testing and measurement techniques.” www.quick-step.co.uk

Setting the bar

Altro safety flooring and hygienic wall cladding are providing the highest standard of safety, hygiene and aesthetics for athletes at the University of Bath’s renowned £30 million Sports Training Village (STV).

The STV is an indoor and outdoor facility that accommodates more than 50 sports and regularly hosts major international competitions, as well as being a world-class multi-sport training environment. There has been major investment in improving the facilities at the STV, including a £1.6m refit to the swimming pool, which included Altro Whiterock hygienic wall cladding in the changing area. More recently, Altro Whiterock was chosen again, alongside Altro Aquarius safety flooring, for the refurbishment of the dry changing areas. Altro Whiterock White is the hygienic alternative to tiles that’s impact resistant, grout-free and easy to clean. Its smooth white surface and classical purity make it a timeless choice for any interior. Made from a high-quality, food-safe PVCu polymer, Altro Whiterock can handle temperatures up to 60°C. It meets all current European Union (EU) Directives on health and hygiene. Altro Aquarius was developed to deliver optimum slip resistance in combined wet and dry areas, with shoes or bare feet — so it’s ideal for bathrooms and changing areas. Like all Altro safety flooring products, Altro Aquarius offers sustained slip resistance for the lifetime of the product, keeping your risk of a slip to just one in a million. The 2mm range features plain and tonal chip options, including an on-trend indigo shade to help achieve high contrast and design flexibility. It’s also easy to clean, with Altro Easyclean Maxis PUR technology. T 01462 489516 www.altro.co.uk

Itec expectations

Having the widest collection of decorative finishes across safety, acoustic and standard sheet vinyl flooring available today, Itec is continuing to provide contractors throughout the UK with products that deliver on expectation and offer excellent value.

With contractors citing the manufacturer’s safety flooring as ‘bloody good stuff to work with’, there is no doubt that Itec is enjoying a growing reputation for product excellence and with a huge assortment of wood, stone, architectural finishes and uni colours to choose from its depth is currently unparalleled. “While some contractors may see us a relatively ‘new’ brand, we are actually backed by Europe’s largest sheet vinyl manufacturer. This fact means that although we may be small in market share we are very big in capability, product choice and of course we have huge ambitions to grow,” comments David Bigland, sales director UK, Itec Contract Floors. One of the first manufacturers to introduce decorative safety flooring with the wood and stone effects in its isafe collection, Itec has also pioneered four-metre wide flooring, an option on every single décor in its collection. This has seen huge growth throughout 2015 as contractors and end users appreciate the advantages of safety, acoustic and sheet vinyl flooring with fewer tell-tale joins in open plan spaces. CRUK’s crucial support

Fundamental support from Carpet Recycling UK’s core funders - Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Desso, ege, Milliken, Balsan and Marlings has enabled the industry body to triumph in key areas and exceed its 2015 goal with a 31% landfill diversion rate for waste carpet.

In 2015, 125,000 tonnes of carpet were reused, recycled or recovered for energy - a 31% diversion rate which surpasses CRUK’s 25% target set at start up in 2008. Around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arises each year in the UK. Energy recovery accounted for 81,000 tonnes (65%) and 44,000 tonnes (35%) were recycled, with both sectors showing similar growth levels. Growth was up by 11% compared to 2014 (113,000 tonnes diverted from landfill). Commenting on their latest achievements, CRUK Director Laurance Bird praised the commitment and support from core funders and members, which have been crucial in helping to drive growth in recycling capacity. “Diverting waste carpet from landfill is now firmly established with new recyclers focusing on this material stream and existing recyclers adding capacity based on increased demands from local authorities and waste management companies. Retailers and flooring contractors are realising the benefits of recycling carpet offcuts as well as uplifted old carpets and changing their waste disposal practices to gain significant cost savings. “Last year, enquiries from the flooring sector rose by 96% to 280 as a result of our broad communication initiatives; clear proof that more companies are interested in reducing their environmental impact and finding more sustainable disposal routes for waste carpet, continued Laurance. Overall enquiries were up 15% at 780, reflecting greater awareness generally that carpet can avoid being landfilled. T 0161 440 8325

DOMOTEX Hannover 2016 Review •

Winter wonderland! Domotex delivers on enthusiasm and innovation at snowy show Snapshots from the show What makes Domotex different!

We’ve said it many times before but everyone in the flooring sector owes it to themselves and their business to go to the Domotex show at least once in a lifetime to get a feel for the possibilities, enthusiasm and creativity that exists in our industry! More than 45,000 people braved the snow and ice to visit the Winter wonderland that happened in Hannover in January where nearly 1,500 exhibitors gathered to share their view of the future of flooring. Both numbers are significantly ahead of the 2015 attendance. “Domotex has demonstratively enhanced its reputation as an unrivalled source of momentum for the global floor coverings industry,” says organiser Dr. Jochen Köckler. “That translates into outstanding business prospects at the fair.” The show attracts mainstream UK exhibitors and visitors but is also a key focus for what European manufacturers will be exporting to us in 2016 – with Britain being seen somewhat enviously as a bright spot in a European market which continues to find itself in the doldrums. The commitment to product development and promotion is an important barometer of confidence in the industry and the 12 packed exhibition halls in Hannover demonstrated a stronger willingness to invest in the future than has been the case in recent years – an encouraging indicator for the trade. Domotex undoubtedly sets the trend agenda for the year ahead and in our review next month we’ll be reporting in more detail on colour forecasts, product developments and the latest technology. Key aspects include some smart development of the popular trend in soft carpet; the peaking of greys as the colour of choice; a new emphasis on custom rugs, organic vinyl; and the direct digital printing that is rejuvenating the laminates sector. But if you want to see for yourself next year, the dates are already announced – January 14-17, 2017 – and there are cheap flights out of Stansted, Heathrow, Manchester and Birmingham for about £100 if you book early. Just do it!

DOMOTEX 2016 Review Balterio Innovating authenticity Balterio is about to make a big impact after its major investment in advanced technology that transforms the way laminate flooring is made – and transcends the conventional standards for authenticity and performance. The company’s newly commissioned factory in Belgium allows direct printing to a lacquered board with ultra high definition imagery. “We are known for innovation,” says Franky Terrjn at Balterio, “and this is a very major step forward for us in production technology. “This approach gives us remarkable precision, contrast and depth with more vibrant colours. We are totally in control of the design and we can deliver incredibly vivid and realistic results,” he said. As well as definition, the size of the printing format on the new production line means that pattern repeats can be much further apart – with no repeat, for example, for up to 28 planks compared to 10 plan repeats in conventional manufacturing. Instead of the usual print media layer, Balterio is now printing directly to a lacquered coating on the surface of a high density fibreboard. This gives the product a robust, coherent structure which is more resistant to impact and abrasion – as a result, the company can offer a lifetime wear guarantee (limited to 33 years) for residential use. The laminate also has a softer, warmer feel which is appealing. The first ranges from the new system were launched at Domotex. The new digital print range for domestic use is a 9mm plank with an elegant 4-sided parquet bevel. It is offered in 18 decors with an emphasis on a beautiful variety of oaks which will be popular with the UK market. The second range from the system to be launched is Traffic, an 8mm plank without V-groove which is suitable for contract and high-end residential installations and featuring smart designer decors across a collection of 11 distinctive styles. Both ranges feature the clever ClickXpress rotating joint system which is reckoned to accelerate installation times by up to 25%. Laminate has never been more realistic than this – not just in look, but also in feel. The UK market will get its first taste of this new future in March and April as the product is rolled out nationally. T +32 (0)56 62 80 81

Tapibel Myriad possibilities

Tapibel has a lot to talk about as their new tufting machine in Belgium comes on line in the next two months and opens up a whole new world of possibilities. The new ‘Myriad’ machine has individual tuft control across the full four-metre width, eliminating pattern repeat and enabling limitless possibilities for design. Linked to state-of-the-art Tuftlink software, designers can work in separate layers for artistic design, pile heights and colours. Alongside the creativity, this major investment adds substantial capacity for tenth-gauge tufting at the company.

“This is a very clever machine and is going to make a major difference to our designs and delivery in 2016,” says Mike Packwood of Tapibel (pictured above right). “We have had a great reaction from UK buyers to the new designs that we have been able to create on the system so far.” Eight new examples under Tapibel’s Incati carpet tile brand were on show at Domotex including distinctive basket weave effects and absolutely on-trend concrete effects. The use of Econyl BCF fibre, recovered from waste nylon, also gives the product an attractive sustainable story. 2016 is also an Olympic year for Tapibel as they roll out in Rio to demonstrate the ultimate in performance. The company’s Gymtex and Sportex finishing top layers in striking Brazillian green were selected by for the gymnastics floors and tumbling mats by Gymnova, the international leader in gymnastic equipment. A stunning new stand reflects the confidence of Interfloor and their brands – the clean, bright white and blue design makes a bold statement that the company is switched on to service. “There is a very positive attitude at Interfloor,” says Gary Cowley, Interfloor’s sales director, “There has been an increased focus on customer service, manufacturing and logistical excellence and new product development, and our customers, throughout the world, have responded enthusiastically.”

The business, best know for its Tredaire and Duralay brands, has invested over £3m in a range of initiatives to increase output to cope with both peak season demand and the company’s longer term sales growth plans. As a result, Interfloor delivered a very successful service in an intensely busy pre-Christmas period. “This improvement in customer service ensures we are able to fully support our customers in helping them maximise their sales over key trading periods,” says Gary Cowley. McThree The wonder of flatweave

McThree made their mark last year with some creative new work with flatweave rugs and the company has extended the offer with their stunning new Classical Designs range that have a striking 3D effect with a large portfolio of styles across six colours. “McThree is a leading company in innovative flatwoven rugs for the world market and we have had a tremendous response in the UK market for these products which are very unique’” said Peter Dewaegheneire. The rugs look very natural and stylishly expensive. But in fact, the yarn is 100% polypropylene and can be used both inside and outdoors – to be hosed down as required on the decking! And the inexpensive pricing belies their handmade looks and luxury appearance. T +32 (0)56 61 14 29

Carpenter Ultimate underlay

Carpenter has been adding extra to their underlay range to put a little more bounce in the step of carpet consumers in 2016.

The popular 9mm Richstep and 11mm Deepstep products have been bulked up in density from 100 kg of foam per cubic metre to 125 kg but the latest launch at Domotex takes the performance a little further. Ultimate Living is a new 10mm underlay for up-market domestic use and is also suitable for double-stick installations with a density of 145 kg/m3. Like Richstep and Deepstep, Ultimate Living features Carpenter’s popular netted backing which adds strength and guides the blade for installation. Carpenter have announced that Extrastep is now suitable for underfloor heating giving extra versatility to this 6mm IMO rated contract double-stick underlay. T 01457 861141

Edel Telenzo Innovation on show

Domotex was the debut for four new stripes in Edel Telenzo’s popular Barbican collection and an opportunity to roll them out over a large floor area for visitors to appreciate the subtle sophistication of the new designs.

John Constable with the Edel Rugs box

Barbican already had six plains and two stripes but Harrogate visitors got a sneak preview of what was to come and it has been worth the wait. The ‘crinkly’, knitted-look stripes come in very contemporary colours with some blues and greens and include the eye-catching Candy Cane for a bolder statement. Two new development products – Eternity and Poetry - attracted the attention of judges for selection in innovations@Domotex - a highly prestigious collection of the latest in floorcovering technology. These carpets deploy clever combinations of yarn with Eternity using wool with Tencel, a semi-synthetic viscose, to create a unique flecked effect when piece-dyed and Poetry using 65% polyamide plus Tencel for a soft deep pile with a beautiful sheen. Edel Rugs Boxing match

Edel Telenzo opened the box on an interesting new venture at Domotex which adds a custom rugs offer to the carpet collections. The launch of Edel Rugs at the show made a big impact with its stylish presentation in a neat, retailer friendly sampling box which shows off each of the four border styles – leather and linen borders, volume finish and blind stitch.

Looking a little sheepish is designer Annette Sanders (left) and marketing manager Annemarie Hadders with a dramatic wool promotion in the aisle at Domotex which turned out to be a popular selfie spot for visitors! from The Stocklists

The rug treatment can then be applied to any Edel Telenzo carpet, any size, so retailers can show consumers all their Edel Telenzo sampling and offer to turn them into top quality rugs. “This is a big market and we wanted a versatile offer that retailers can work with,” said Edel Telenzo’s MD Phil Hartley. “The first reaction to the concept has been fantastic!”

DOMOTEX 2016 Review Cavalier a smarter soft

Cavalier were delighted with reactions to the Domotex launch of Stain-less Serenity – a premium synthetic soft-touch carpet that has been carefully developed to offer just a little more than many of the market leaders in this popular sector. Stain-less Serenity is aimed at those who want their soft to be a little more substantial! The higher stitch rate gives it a reassuring weight and density but it is the fibre technology that improves its stability, with a large cross section within each fibre that gives the pile more stability while retaining a beautiful soft handle. There are two weights – Regal at 45oz and Imperial at 75oz, both in 4 and 5m and 11 trendy colours.

“We’re delighted with the way this carpet has been received at Domotex,” says Hans Lowe of Cavalier. “We think weight for weight it outperforms the competition and offers that extra stability that many are looking for in a soft carpet.” T 01254 268 000 www.cavaliercarpets.co.uk

Ball & Young Cast iron guarantee

“We believe in this product, it’s cast iron!” says Ann Shaw, Ball & Young’s sales and marketing director, explaining the latest in the eclectic line-up of brand names which include Charleston and Caviar & Crystal. A 6mm PU underlay, Cast Iron guarantees a flame retardant performance that is rated to IMO standards making it suitable for marine contracts and also larger commercial installations with demanding specifications. Launched at Domotex, Cast Iron will be available in the UK in March. But Ball & Young still have their soft side and the line of teddies on parade that have become a hallmark for the soft comfort of the super successful Charleston range were ‘bearing’ up well under the pressure of a major trade show! “We can’t believe how popular the teddies have become,” says Ann. “Happily, the appreciation of the Charleston range has followed suit!” T 01536 200502

F Ball Technology and trust

The new, smart, modern F Ball stand at Domotex reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and the development of their comprehensive range of flooring preparation products and adhesives marches forward with typical enthusiasm.

Latest in the line up is Stycco Flex, a very versatile rapid curing adhesive that has a number of uses such as stair nosings, carpet gripper, PVC cladding, skirting boards, architrave and trims. Curing in just half an hour, it is especially helpful to secure stair nosings without drilling. It can also be used to secure header rows when installing wood flooring. But product innovation aside, F Ball’s Richard Harris puts it simply: “Essentially we are selling ‘trust’ – that the products will deliver the performance you need and that we will deliver the products when you need them. Innovation plus good old fashioned customer service.” True to his word, F Ball delivers next working day for orders placed before 4.00pm. T 01538 361633 www.f-ball.co.uk 38 February 2016

Vorwerk A force to fascinate

Vorwerk created a real buzz around their branded rugs – a striking new concept that is set to make a major impact in the UK rug market. Sold as ‘Selected Rugs’, Vorwerk designers have carefully chosen some of the most interesting options from nine of their carpet ranges in the most contemporary colours and combined them with coordinated borders and decorative seams.

This diverse range has been organized into four lifestyle collections – Naturalness, Warmth, Tradition and Boldness – offering everything from delicate domestic themes to bold blues and greens with neon trimming. And maybe the most interesting feature for market watchers is that each rug carries a visible Vorwerk branded tag to add the kudos of the company’s highly respected brand to every product. Another major market event is the re-launch of Vorwerk’s flagship Fascination range – completely renewed with 17 qualities and 350 colour combinations. The company’s own creative team worked with reknown Italian colour stylist Giulio Ridolfo to achieve the transformation which puts Fascination right back at the centre of contemporary carpet design. Gunning for rays

F&X Carpets is starting off 2016 with a bang, launching four new collections under its Suretex brand of stain-resistant carpet and welcoming in a milestone in polypropylene fibre development.

With Joy, Meridian, Capital and Casa, F&X Carpets is ensuring that Suretex remains one of the brightest new brands in residential carpet through a mix of style, colour, great value and the introduction of UV-protection throughout the collection. Using a newly developed Suretex yarn that is extruded in-house, F&X Carpets equips each carpet with softness, resilience and vivid colour, while retaining the bleach cleanability and stain-resistance that makes polypropylene a great choice in a wide range of homes. This in-house engineering has also allowed the manufacturer to include UV-protection throughout the Suretex collection. UV rays can be harmful to polypropylene carpets and in areas flooded with light, time can cause severe degradation of the fibre, causing the carpet to simply fall apart. With the special UV-absorbing additives found in Suretex carpets this is prevented from happening, meaning that Suretex carpets provide a better long-term solution. “These new ranges are the first to embrace our in-house yarn that gives Suretex carpets a finer finish, better resilience and complete and lasting protection from harmful UV rays,” says Gordon Hugo, sales manager. “Retaining colour and preventing degradation in even the brightest of rooms, as well as our fast-growing reputation for excellent value, these new styles are sure to set the UK market alight, redefining excellence in polypropylene carpet.” T 07976 607657 www.fuxingcn.com

Quick-Step proves performance

Quick-Step and its development brand Pergo have announced the results of a comparative lab test featuring its wood flooring. Focusing on three criteria wear, stain and gloss resistance - the tests clearly showed that both Pergo and Quick-Step wood floors offer excellent durability.

“Along with innovation and design, quality is and always will be one of our company’s key values”, explains Carl Plyson, General Manager Wood at Unilin’s flooring division. “These test results prove that our efforts truly make a difference.” The test itself was centred around three criteria: wear, stain, and gloss resistance, with samples of Unilin Pergo or Quick-Step compared to samples of other wood floors. To test the resistance of lacquered floors to everyday wear and tear, a castor chair with hard wheels, carrying 90 kilograms, was rolled in circles over the floor samples 25,000 times. The Unilin floor showed no signs of damage on profiles or surface, while other lacquered floors had visible scratches, small black dots and openings in the profiles.

Crafty carpet

New Wool Crafty joins Alternative Flooring’s growing eco family of undyed wool carpets and is the fashionable flatweave version of the luxurious Wool Barefoot collection.

Wool Crafty flatweave carpet is part of Alternative Flooring’s eco undyed wool collection. These carpets are handwoven on traditional hand looms - kind to you and the environment and the ultimate understatement in natural wool. This chic, crafty collection has style and substance, capturing the latest fashion trends. The Houndstooth, a canine check that creeps off the catwalk and onto our floors is a check that is bang on trend this season. The collection is fun too with catchy names. Hound is a houndstooth check in Basset, Hound, Beagle and Whippet. Diamond is a classy little geometric in Princess, Lasque, Briolette and Marquise. Cross is a subtle linear plaid in Celtic, Maltese, Fusilly and Trefoil. T 01264 335111 40 February 2016

The second durability test focused on stain resistance, with coffee placed on samples of Unilin’s and competitors’ oiled floors for 16 hours. The same was done for lacquered floors, using acetone. In both cases, Unilin Pergo and Quick-Step wood floors came out as the least damaged. When subjected to daily wear, matt lacquered floors have a tendency to become shinier, while the opposite is true for lacquered floors that are glossy from the start. A floor’s gloss resistance level indicates to what extent it can retain its original finish. To test this, two flooring samples were subject to the linear abraser test, in which a sponge moves side to side 200 times under a weight of 600 grams. When compared afterwards, the Unilin floor showed virtually no change in its original finish. Floors with Unilin’s extra matt finish also offer the same level of gloss resistance. www.quick-step.co.uk

Show-stopping performance

A range of market-leading floor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used in the refurbishment of Cliffs Pavilion, a theatre located in Southend-on-Sea.Young’s Flooring, also based in Southend-onSea, was contracted to restore the theatre’s 700m2 main auditorium floor, and used F. ball’s Stopgap P131, general purpose primer, Stopgap 500 Micro, a rapid drying finishing compound and Stopgap 700 Superflex, a fibre-reinforced, fast-drying smoothing underlayment, to prepare the area before new floor coverings were installed. Having once been used as a dance hall, the auditorium had an existing wooden sprung floor situated on top of a concrete subfloor. Required to endure the footfall of over 1,600 people, the wooden sprung floor was no longer fit for purpose, unable to withstand the heavy traffic and the demands placed upon it. The existing wood floor covering was consequently removed and the area was refurbished from scratch. Once the original flooring had been removed a moisture measurement test was carried out as a precaution, which indicated that the subfloor was sufficiently dry to proceed with the installation. The joisting was then repaired and reinforced where necessary. Following this, a 25mm plywood subfloor was installed and primed using Stopgap P131, a primer designed to promote adhesion to smoothing underlayments and prevent uncontrolled rapid drying. Stopgap 500 Micro was then used to skim the plywood joints and the subfloor was prepared with Stopgap 700 Superflex to create a flat, smooth surface free from undulations. Once dried, Karndean Van Gogh wood floorcoverings were installed. Eddie Young, managing director of Young’s Flooring, commented: “F. Ball products are always my go-to selection, simply because they do exactly what they say they will. I know I can always rely on them to get the job done and this time was no different. In fact, because the products are so effective and fast drying, we managed to finish earlier than expected. When you’re working on a tight schedule, that extra time makes all the difference.” T 01538 361 633

(Very) ‘cool to buy wool!’

“It’s cool to buy wool!” was taken a little too literally in Hannover where sub-zero temperatures and four inches of snow greeted the campaign’s arrival on the continent!

The Wool Carpet Focus Group successfully infiltrated the vast halls of the Domotex flooring exhibition in January with their distinctive ‘sheep with shades’ branding which included a smart woven presentation on the Wools of New Zealand stand (see picture). Meanwhile the members of the campaign’s steering group are working on several ideas to help retailers sell more wool carpet in 2016 which include two videos, 13,000 ‘Woolability’ leaflets and several thousand “It’s cool to buy wool!” showcards. “The word is spreading,” said Martin Curtis who heads the campaign. “I am very encouraged that there is a genuine will amongst the whole industry to get a united single message across to consumers that wool carpets and rugs are the best value for money around!”

With stops along the way for the best French food and wine, the peloton is due to arrive in Bordeaux on Friday September 16. It supports the education of students by nurturing skills and expertise, provides help to those in need and champions excellence. Said Ben: "This is a challenging bike ride which will see cyclists averaging around 78 miles a day. It's a great opportunity to support the valuable work done by the charity as well as having fun and boosting health and fitness. "We hope to be waved off from the City of London by the lord mayor and pedal into Bordeaux to a civic reception in the wine growing capital of France having enjoyed a six day escapade in the saddle. Our route covers undulating lanes and quiet cycleways making the most of some of the best bike routes in the south of England, North West and mid France." "There are still a few places left on the ride and for anyone looking for a personal challenge for 2016, this is a perfect fit. I can't wait for a two-wheeled adventure to remember." The ride has been organised in conjunction with Saddle Skedaddle, a specialist cycling company, and costs £1,300 per person covering six nights' accommodation, food and refreshments and bike transportation back to the UK. Brintons

Don’t Miss It - Wool Plays the Field at Chelsea in March Wool Floor Show London promises to be a stunning event and one which is long overdue for the carpet sector in the capital city. As twenty-two leading industry brands gather to promote natural wool carpets, the venue - Chelsea Football Club at Stamford Bridge - will be transformed into a World of Wool for two days (23rd and 24th March)

At the heart of this event is the Campaign for Wool (CfW) - which focuses on creating better understanding of the fibre so that more people choose wool. Central to this aim is the launch of the CfW’s new WoolRetailer.com website, which will be held at the event and will bring a long needed status to the quality wool flooring retailer.

The Campaign for Wool want to really promote customer service skills that hinge on product knowledge and have introduced a ‘Wool Specialist’ accreditation course. The good retailer that really knows about wool carpet can become part of this major initiative. Retailers that pass a short test are registered on the website which features a consumer local shop search facility along with buying guides. This website will be promoted across consumer websites and publications and qualified wool retailers will have certificates and badges for in-store use...

“WoolRetailer.com is quite a game changer for the wool sector as it will focus on and support retailers and consumers in one place. We are very keen to talk to retailers about getting involved and they can sign up for this at the London event,” Bridgette Kelly of the CfW explained.

Product from the top names in the industry at their own individual stands is obviously the real pull for visitors. “We think that visitors to this event will find their time well-spent. The quality of exhibitors is very high and we have a really good mix. There are a number of different inspirational installations to show key trends and we are rolling out a seminar programme too,” added Bridgette.

Brockway Carpets is just one of the manufacturers attending ‘It’s great to have a show dedicated to the London scene. For Brockway this is an exciting platform to present our fabulous new wool-rich designs and shades for 2016,” Shaun Lewis, Sales Director said.

British Wool will support the industry with a hub dedicated to the unique British story. “Our wool is grown in the UK on over 45,000 sheep farms. It is very strong and brilliant for carpets. Our team have a lot of knowledge to pass on and we can answer any questions that visitors have,” Tim Booth of the British Wool Marketing Board said.

Interesting additions include a chance to walk out and view the famed football pitch from the event’s exhibition hall. Refreshments and lunch are available at two Wool Lounges and there is also chance to see the winners of the new International Wool Carpet and Rug Awards.

Entry is free and the venue is well located for the highlights of London as it is minutes away from the local tube station but parking is also available on site for those that want to drive (car parking charges apply).

“This is a tremendous opportunity, it is a quality show case of wool for the floor that has never really been seen in one place in London or indeed elsewhere and I encourage people to make a day or two of it as there will be plenty to see,” said Bridgette. Visit www.woolfloorshow.co.uk to find out more and pre-register.

New Awards for Wool Carpet Industry

The Wool Carpet and Rug Awards 2016 will be the first of many according to the Campaign for Wool. “The art of wool carpet needs recognition.” Bridgette Kelly of the CfW says: “Every year we see beautiful design, texture, innovation with wool and the products created represent real talent.” The Awards will be held during Wool Floor Show London with winners announced there at a special Awards evening. Some categories are sponsored by consumer publications and there is a special British Wool Award too. Nominations for the Wool Carpet Hall of Fame are also invited in recognition of an individual who has made a significant contribution and commitment to the wool carpet industry during their career. Marketing insights Super soft carpets A relatively new phenomenon, super soft carpets have created a deep impression in retail flooring. Dominated by synthetics there are few wool alternatives which can compete with the sumptuous feeling underfoot.

David Cormack, Marketing Director of Cormar Carpets explains how this sector has evolved, ‘The launch of Sensation by Cormar in 2012 was a ‘game-changer’. Before then the concept of a super soft deep pile carpet at an affordable price was not really an option. Using our unique 100% Luxelle fine denier polypropylene fibre, in multi filament yarn, we were able to create easy clean carpets with a lustrous handle and stain resistant properties which have proved a winning formula.’ Since the initial launch of Sensation Original in 2012, Cormar has expanded the collection to include a family of ranges, including Sensation New Feeling, Sensation Heathers, Sensation Twist and the soon-to-be launched Sensation Supreme. The popularity of Sensation spawned a multitude of similar ranges and created a new style of carpet in its own right. In fact there are now so many ‘soft carpets’ to choose from, in so many different styles and price points, it’s almost bewildering.Yet, Cormar believe that Sensation still fits the bill for many consumers, twinning quality and value, with the added confidence that Cormar delivery brings. First Impressions by Victoria Carpets is a classic harmony of a soft touch carpet combined with excellent performance characteristics. First Impressions is a 100% polypropylene carpet

Cormar Carpets - Sensation Heathers 48 February 2016

where the subtle shades and de-lustred fibre give an instant look of refinement. Despite its soft and luxurious handle, First Impressions is a heavy weight carpet packing in 63 oz/sqyd by using an extremely high stitch rate on a tenth gauge tufting machine. By packing the fibre so tightly, Victoria is able to make the pile height relatively short so that the product has exceptional resilience to go with the undoubted aesthetic beauty.

Victoria Carpets - First Impressions Positive Glow

Jon Stone, Sales and Marketing Director shares their technical credentials, ‘First Impressions also benefits from Victoria’s unique LocWeave backing system which allows us to guarantee the carpet against delamination and against shading, meaning the installation will look better for longer giving true value for money. Soft underfoot comfort, exceptional wear properties, value for money and genuine beauty. First Impressions – Distinctly Victoria.’

“There has been a noticeable trend towards softer yarns, particularly in the man-made sector, where technical advances have allowed us to improve the tactile feel without detracting from the practicality.”

Kingmsmead launched their Everlon supersoft fibre in late 2014 both in the Clean Easy branding with ‘Wonderful’ (in two weights) and with the Stoddard ‘Medici Wilton’. Both products have been strong sellers in their particular fields and more products are planned for early 2016. Managing Director, Martin West comments ‘there has been a noticeable trend towards softer yarns, particularly in the manmade sector, where technical advances have

allowed us to improve the tactile feel without detracting from the practicality’.

Abingdon Flooring has a good reputation for being innovative and on the front foot. Soft carpets first took their attention with the introduction of the Kosset Smartstrand collection of products that proved to be both soft and durable, albeit not the cheapest. Martin Peace, Sales Director explains why timing is right, ‘the move into Stainfree Polypropylene soft saxonies suited the trend for soft greys and cool beige. Fortunately, we hit the market at just the right time with the Soft and Silky Collection comprising of Soft Whisper, Satin Touch and Hidden Depths. Good, better, best options in a perfect colour bank and a very competitive price.” “At Harrogate this year we launched our super soft Stainfree Pastelle range and received a superb reaction. Officially the softest polypropylene yarn on the market, it is a softer product with an even softer colour palate. Samples and new style lecterns are being despatched as we speak. Finally, I would ask you to watch this space as we have another trend setting product on the launch pad. This will prove to be a very exciting prospect for 2016. No soft landings for us at this rate!’

that meets today’s demand for ultra-soft carpets. It also has remarkable bounceback qualities. If something heavy causes an indent on the surface, the yarn has the memory to naturally spring back to its former state.

‘The collection comprises six bright, fashionable variants that are all ultra-soft, durable and extremely hard-wearing. All these USPs add up to a distinctive and memorable brand. As we say at Associated Weavers, iSense is so soft, you’ll want to take it to bed with you.’ ‘Wonderful wool gives natural softness and so much more’, says Brockway Carpets. It’s hard to match the wonderful all-round benefits of wool for softness, beauty and incredible durability,” says Brockway Carpets’ Sales Director, Shaun Lewis. ‘As well as the natural softness that comes from our specially selected wools, there are all the benefits of fire resistance, sustainability, warmth and durability that you just don’t get with a synthetic,’ he said. Brockway’s new generation of super wool-rich carpets come in 100 percent pure new wool, or 80/20 per cent or 80/10/10 per cent combinations. ‘Our carpets are made of British wool for the strongest yarn and New Zealand wool for the lightest and softest yarn. As well as being

‘To establish a memorable brand, simply create a brand with memory.’ That was the ethos at Associated Weavers with their recent launch of iSense. A unique product that is the envy of the carpet world. Steve Elliott, Managing Director, explains the thinking behind this innovative venture. ‘With the expertise of our manufacturing plant in Belgium, we knew we could be the first to formulate a new branded product that would stand out from the crowd. iSense is a unique polyamide fibre

naturally soft, wool is easy to clean, stain repellent and looks good for longer. A good wool carpet has great ‘bounce back’ too which makes it super soft and springy. You can’t beat the wonderful softness and warmth of a wool-rich carpet, it’s the ultimate naturally sustainable fibre,’ added Shaun.

Flower on Flooring The benefit of group settings Whether flooring retailers are aiming to gain more value for money by improving their purchasing power or gain more support in other areas, they are able to choose which of the UK's main buying groups meet their needs and requirements in the best way. This feature looks at five groups, providing outlines of their most popular features. Greendale Carpets reports it has over 50 suppliers and more than 100 own labelled carpet ranges, all renamed to colour level and competitively priced. These include brand leaders as well as exclusives, to offer members enhanced value for money and are all ordered via its office and support facilities at Hereford. Relabelling enables members to compete with multiple own label ranges, widely distributed manufacturer’s products and internetmarketed ranges, providing local exclusivity. Internet marketing and national advertising are discouraged as the member’s local marketing is the priority. All Greendale members belong to BIRA, the association of independent retailers, qualifying for a range of benefits including preferential credit card rates. The group's website has information for consumers as well as a member area, employs agents to help members locally and runs a successful show for members to meet suppliers and discuss business. Greendale reports it still has exclusive areas of the UK available for retailers who share its ethos. Flooring One aims to offer a friendly and professional service to independent flooring retailers throughout the UK and Eire to increase member profitability through financial benefits such as specially negotiated rebates from key suppliers, lowest prices and terms. It also offers support and additional payment terms through its unique Cenpac payment system. It is in partnership with over 40 key suppliers to offer members margin protection on rebranded products. Dedicated support from field merchandisers combines with a comprehensive 2016 marketing Greendale HQ and warehouse in Hereford

manual, containing on-trend photography and offers supported by promotional concepts to assist with advertising requirements, plus a website that directs consumers to flooring retailer members. Flooring One additionally reports that its procurement service can help save money on energy, telecoms, insurance and other areas of business. It also offers interest free credit and credit card schemes. SMG states that over 80% of new members have never been in a group before. It guarantees that all members will retain complete independence and describes itself as ''the group you join when you don’t want to be part of a group." Retailers with existing direct accounts will benefit from SMG pricing, rebates and promotions not available to others, it reports, and guarantees access to all approved products through its purchasing system, SMG Orderlink. "Members can sell the products their customers SMG promotion really want with a buying price that is cheaper than the wholesale alternative," it says. Time and money savings are provided with special deals on credit cards, energy pricing, commercial vehicles and a free of charge business support helpline. This month SMG Insurance will launch the first ever flooring specific retail insurance package, says the group, with a guaranteed saving of 10% on existing premiums. With over 380 branches, SMG states that its members expect it to keep pace with industry and general retail developments and it plans to continue to "raise the bar" in its offering in 2016. ACG states that its primary function is to enhance members' profitability, although its approach is one of non interference to respect their independence. It is a non profit making organisation with 278 member stores nationwide. "Over the last 10 years we are now considered by suppliers as the fastest growing buying group in the UK," it says. Members dealing directly with group suppliers receive preferential net prices, annual rebates and seasonal promotions. It is funded by annual subscription charges (presently £825) and all prices and annual rebates are paid to members directly.

ACG describes itself as a low cost operation that makes retailers money by investing strongly in creating professional own label brands exclusively for members to combat the threat of online purchasing. "We carefully select product ranges for exceptional value and competitiveness and we merchandise on both supplier and our own subsidised display stands," it states. Metro is a group of independent retailers from the smallest one-man operation to multiple-outlet businesses. Retaining independence is vital to Metro members which is why all group activity is always optional. This allows them to select the best benefits of group membership while being 100% in control of their own businesses. A Metro Group member store makeover

Since 1995 the group has developed an own label brand, Carpet 1st, encompassing the best-selling and performing products on sale today. Members can maximise their profits whilst supporting the group and authorised suppliers. Metro has a dedicated marketing department with over 30 years’ flooring experience, complete with a unique mobile marketing studio. “This unique idea allows us to transform a retailer’s showroom, retailers find it incredible what we can do for them. The service especially appeals to new members, who along with existing members have never had access to this kind of unique service before," says Metro. There¹s so much more to Metro than just buying flooring.

Flooring Factsheet Adhesives

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 55

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.greendalecarpets.co.uk Contact: Rob Harding Tel: 01432 852000 Fax: 01432 852005 rharding@greendalecarpets.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 58

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 60

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
