US court unseals arrest warrants for Quiboloy

As senators petition to reverse panel’s contempt charge

ACALIFORNIA judge has ordered the unsealing of the arrest warrants against Kingdom of Jesus Christ church founder Apollo Quiboloy and his co-accused, bringing the case a step closer toward extraditing the pastor, who is wanted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, a New York-based lawyer said.

Central District of California Judge Terry Hatter Jr. ordered the unsealing of the arrest warrants issued against Quiboloy and threeother accused for charges of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking by force, fraud, coercion, sex trafficking of children, conspiracy, and cash smuggling.

New York lawyer Lara Gregory told GMA Integrated News this could be the first step in initiating the extradition process for Quiboloy as the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) may now issue red notices against those covered by the arrest warrants.

Solons hope Zubiri gets Senate vote to back Cha-cha; Unlikely, says Villar

LAWMAKERS on Thursday expressed optimism that the leadership of Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri would be instrumental in garnering 18 votes in the Senate to pass amendments to the restrictive economic provisions of the Constitution.

However, Senator Cynthia Villar said it would be difficult to get the needed 18 votes among the 24 senators to pass the Resolution of Both Houses

No. 6, which seeks to amend the Constitution.

Reps. Zia Alonto Adiong of Lanao del Sur and Marvin Rillo of QuezonCity said at a news conference they were confident that with the vast experience of Zubiri as a lawmaker and former Majority Leader in the Senate, he could hold sway over his fellow senators.

“If there is a will, there is a way," said Adiong, also the chair of the House Special Committee on Marawi Rehabilitation and Victims Compensation.

La Niña could start in June, says Pagasa

A LA NIÑA episode, marked by enhanced rainfall in the Pacific Ocean, is likely to develop in June, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Thursday.

At a Zoom news conference, Pagasa administrator Dr. Nathaniel Servando said the agency issued a La Niña watch “because of a higher possibility of more than 50 percent that a La Niña will develop in June, but its effects will be felt in the last part of the year.”

THE head of the military's Western Command was injured as two China Coast Guard vessels used water cannons against the civilian supply ship Unaiza May 4 near Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea on Tuesday.

Vice Admiral Alberto Carlos said Thursday the incident left him with some cuts and bruises, while four other crew members were also injured as the windows of the supply ship were shattered during the water cannon attack.

Despite the incident, Carlos said the Philippines will continue its regular rotation and resupply (RoRe) missions to stationed troops on board the BRP Sierra Madre that was deliberately run aground on Ayungin Shoal to serve as an outpost of the Philippine Marines.

TWO Filipino crew members were among those killed in a missile attack by Yemen's Huthi rebels on a ship in the Gulf of Aden, the government said Thursday.

The warm phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation in the tropical Pacific is to “neutralize” also in June, but Servando warned the El Niño’s “strong” impact — marked by drought, dry spells, and dry conditions—will stay until June.

“Because of this, there will be a delay in the onset of the rainy season,” he told reporters.

Meanwhile, Pagasa’s Hydro-Meteorology Division said the water elevation in all major dams, except for Angat Dam that supplies 90 percent of Metro Manila’s potable water, is decreasing every day due to El Niño.

Apart from the reduced amount of rainfall, the weather bureau said water evaporation of dams contributes to the dwindling water supply.

“To emphasize, the rate of evaporation, if the temperature is too high, is (also) a hydrological cycle, a very complex computation,” it cited.

Analiza Solis, Pagasa Climate Monitoring and Prediction chief, said while there is no guarantee, “there is still a probability of 55 percent of a La Niña to develop in the next six months.”

“Historically, if there is a pre-developing La Niña, there will be below-normal rainfall condition, especially on the onset of the rainy season or southwest monsoon,” Solis said.

“Even if we have the La Niña watch, let us concentrate on the strong impact of El Niño,” she stressed.

The leader of the 310-strong House of Representatives assured that President Marcos will swiftly provide the needed assistance and support to the families of the casualties and the injured crewmen.

“We stand in solidarity with President Marcos, the Department of Migrant Workers, and the Filipino seafarers affected by this heartbreaking incident. It is imperative that we extend all possible assistance to the families of the victims and ensure that the injured receive the necessary medical care and support,” the Speaker said. Beijing, however, insisted it will "legitimately defend" its rights in the South China Sea, its foreign minister said Thursday. China claims almost the entire South China Sea and has sought to assert sovereignty there despite competing claims from Southeast Asian nations and an international arbitration ruling that its stance has no legal basis. "We will legitimately defend our rights in accordance with the law," Beijing's foreign minister Wang Yi said at a press conference. Salceda, vice chairperson of the agriculture committee, urged the 19th Congress “not to limit its investigation merely to the P93 million sale in question this year,” but to include all sales of buffer stock since the Rice Tariffication Law took effect in 2019.

“The NFA is supposed to have received a total of P85.7 billion in national government subsidies and another P66.3 billion in sales of rice stocks from 2018 to 2022. That totals to P152 billion from those five years alone,” said Salceda, who also chairs the House Committee on Ways and Means.

“That is additive. Even with a loss incurred of P20 billion – or the difference between the direct cost of rice and the sale of rice – that’s still P132 billion to account for,” he noted.

The Rice Tariffication Law earlier limited the NFA’s role to buffer stocking from local farmers. But Salceda noted that “in theory, the NFA should sometimes make gains, rather than merely make consistent losses, if it can auction its rice stocks.” With Charles Dantes

217 COVID vax shots in 29 mos. for German man

THIS man is not afraid of needles, or coronavirus vaccines for that matter.

A German who deliberately got vaccinated for COVID-19 a whopping 217 times in 29 months—or an average of at least seven shots per month— did not report any side effects from his many jabs, according to researchers studying possibly the "most vaccinated person in history."

The immune system of the 62-yearold man from the central German city of Magdeburg—who has not been named—is still firing on all cylinders, the researchers said in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal. They said the man voluntarily received so many shots against all medical advice and warned against jumping to far-reaching conclusions from this single case.

The man first came to the attention of the German-led researchers due to news reports in 2022, when he had only received 90 jabs.

Media reports at the time said the man was suspected of getting so many doses to collect the completed vaccination cards, which could then be forged and sold to people who did not want to be vaccinated.

A public prosecutor in Magdeburg opened an investigation into allegations of fraud over the case but no criminal charges were filed, according to the scientific paper published earlier this week.

The prosecutor collected evidence of 130 vaccinations over nine months, it added.

But the man claims to have received 217 vaccine doses of eight different COVID vaccines—including all mRNA versions – over 29 months.

Kilian Schober, a virologist at Germany's University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and study co-author, said in a statement that when they contacted the man, he was "very interested" in undergoing a range of tests to examine the effect of so many vaccinations. With AFP

Deadly skin lightening? Binay seeks probe on IV gluta deaths

SENATOR Nancy Binay, who has detailed her cyberbullying experiences over her dark skin in her book "Charcoal Confessions," on Thursday sought a probe into the deaths related to the illegal use of intravenous glutathione— which fans of skin whitening swear by.

Binay filed Senate Resolution No. 952 weeks after actress Mariel Rodriquez—wife of Senator Robin Padilla—was bashed online for posting on Instagram account that she had an IV drip session inside the Senate office of her husband.

Rodriguez eventually clarified it was not an IV glutathione drip but a Vitamin C drip.

In her resolution, Binay cited the statement of Health Secretary Ted Herbosa that IV glutathione should only be administered in hospitals.

“Injectable glutathione is approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) Philippines as an adjunct treatment in cisplatin chemotherapy. The FDA has not approved any injectable products for skin lightening,” the DOH said.

The department said there were no published clinical trials that have evaluated the use of injectable glutathione for skin lightening.

“It is necessary that the government continuously implement measures to prevent unauthorized use of IV glutathione and remind the public to: (1) consult only board-certified dermatologists; (2) avoid buying intravenous or injectable products online; and (3) avoid being lured to a promising effect of medicines as beauty products,” said Binay in her resolution.

SC tosses out plea assailing PUVMP for petitioner’s lack of

THE Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed a petition filed by a jeepney drivers’ and operators’ group challenging the constitutionality of a provision in the controversial public utility vehicle modernization program (PUVMP) on procedural issues.

Meanwhile, the SC invalidated provisions of ordinances by local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila allowing their respective traffic enforcers to issue traffic violation receipts and confiscate driver’s licenses.

“A permanent injunction is hereby issued to enjoin respondent local government units from further issuing ordinance violation receipts; and confiscating licenses through their own

traffic enforcers, unless they are deputized by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA),” the court said in its 42-page decision uploaded March 4 and penned by Associate Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa.

In a 20-page en banc decision dated July 11, 2023, but made public only last Mar. 4, the SC junked the petition filed by the transport group Bayyo Association Incorporated led by its

president Anselmo Perweg for lack of legal standing and for violating the hierarchy of the courts.

“The Court finds that the petitioners do not possess the requisite legal standing to file this suit. At the outset, Bayyo did not submit any proof to support its claim that it is a legitimate association of PUJ operators and drivers,” the SC ruling stated.

“While it attached a Certificate of Registration issued by the SEC, the same merely proves its registration as an association, but does not establish that its members are indeed PUJ operators and drivers,” stated the SC decision penned by Associate Justice Maria Filomena Singh.

“Accordingly, due to the absence of Bayyo’s Articles of Incorporation

and By-Laws or any other competent proof, the Court cannot ascertain its legal standing as an association of PUJ operators and drivers. Even if such were not the case, Bayyo still failed to establish who its members are and that it has been duly authorized by said members to institute the Petition,” the verdict read.

The SC, citing the case of the Provincial Bus Operators Association of the Philippines. vs. the Department of Labor and Employment, explained that it is insufficient to simply allege that the petitioners therein are associations that represent their members, but they should establish who their members are and that their members authorized them to sue on their behalf.

Two quakes shake Davao Oriental; Phivolcs says no damage expected

TWO earthquakes rocked Banganga, Davao Oriental early Thursday morning, but no damage has so far been reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a 5.1 magnitude quake hit Davao Oriental at 5:39 a.m. with a depth of four kilometers and a location of 63 kilometers northeast in the municipality of Baganga. Of tectonic origin, the tremor was caused by the sudden movement along faults and plate boundaries, Phivolcs said.

Intensity 1 was recorded in Bislig City, and Surigao del Sur,

along with Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.

A tremor of magnitude 5 quake was recorded Thursday at 4:19 a.m. some 70 kilometers northeast of Baganga, Davao Oriental.

Initially, it was recorded with a magnitude of 5.3, but Phivolcs later downgraded it to magnitude 5.

It was felt at intensity 3 in Lingig, Surigao del Sur, and intensity 2 in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.

Instrumental intensity 1 was also felt in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur and Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte.

Phivolcs said no damage was expected from the two tremors

BI nabs Japanese wanted in Tokyo for grand larceny

BUREAU of Immigration (BI) operatives have arrested a Japanese man wanted by authorities in Tokyo for large-scale theft.

The fugitive, identified as Takayuki Kagoshima, was cornered along Roxas Blvd., Pasay City by operatives from the BI’s fugitive search unit (FSU).

Kagoshima was arrested on the strength of a warrant issued by the BI board of commissioners against him in October 2023.

“In view of the fact that he was already ordered deported for being an undesirable alien, he will be sent back to Japan as soon as we have secured the required clearances for his departure,” BI chief Norman Tansingco said. A check of Kagoshima’s travel records showed that he was already overstaying, having arrived in the country was on Nov. 7, 2022.

According to Japanese authorities, Kagoshima was the subject of a warrant of arrest issued by a court in Fukuoka prefecture where he was charged for grand larceny.

Kagoshima is allegedly a member of the “JP Dragon syndicate” that plotted to steal cash cards from their victims by pretending to be police officers.

Aussie

senator on human rights protest moves

THE Department of Foreign Affairs

(DFA) should declare Australian Senator Janet Rice persona non grata in the Philippines for protesting human rights abuses in the country during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s address to the Parliament of Australia, Senator Robin Padilla said.

Padilla, who filed proposed Senate Resolution 944, said that Rice “engaged in unparliamentary behavior by expressing her dissent through an act of protest during the proceedings.”

“As reflected in the Votes and Proceedings of the House of Representatives of the Australian Parliament, Senator Rice was directed ‘to leave the Chamber for disorderly behavior,’” Padilla wrote.

“Resolved by the Senate, as it is hereby resolved, to condemn Australian Senator Janet Rice and to urge the Department of Foreign Affairs to declare her as persona non grata for her unparliamentary behavior during President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr.’s address before the Australian Parliament in Canberra,” he stated.

If Padilla’s resolution is adopted, a copy of it will be furnished to the office of DFA Secretary Enrique Manalo “for his information and appropriate action.”

Padilla’s resolution was referred to the Senate Committee on Rules, which will decide if it will be tackled on the plenary for adoption, GMA News reported.

Last week, Rice and three other members of the Australian Parliament staged protests against President Marcos while Marcos was delivering his speech.

Rice flashed a placard bearing the message, “Stop Human Rights Abuses,” while the President was speaking. Macon Ramos-Araneta

BI chief warns public on parcel release scam

BUREAU of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Norman Tansingco warned the public of the proliferation of scam accounts on social media, saying the bureau is not connected in releasing parcels or packages from abroad.

In a statement, Tansingco reminded the public that the BI never communicates with the senders and receivers of packages/parcels passing by the ports under its management.

The BI chief made the remarks after his office received reports of email accounts and social media pages extorting unknowing people in the guise of being official pages.

The BI said that in February, he received information about an email address sending invoices requesting P25,000 for a supposed package from Japan that was being held for release.

He said they received another similar complaint, extorting the victims P3,000 for the release of a package from Syria.

“In another complaint reported to us, a victim was being asked P20,000 for the release of luggage being held at the airport,” said Tansingco.

Tansingco clarified that the BI is not in any way connected to the release of parcels or cargoes.

The BI Chief said that they have forwarded details of the case to the Cybercrime investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) for investigation.

Hunt down Chinese gang getting passports—Barbers

Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers on Thursday urged governors, mayors, and government agencies to hunt down a Chinese syndicate engaged in acquiring legitimate Philippine passports for individuals from China who now pose as Filipino traders.

Barbers

“We

managed to secure a birth certificate indicating that he is a Filipino.

Ong’s henchmen or the Chinese syndicate were able to secure a Filipino birth certificate through “late registration” with “cooperative” local governments. With his forged Filipino birth certificate, Ong was able to secure a Philippine passport and other government-issued IDs,” he said.

Ong, based on House records, also managed to register his firm, Empire 999, a real estate company, with the Securities and Exchange Commission, to engage in several huge land acquisition in Mexico, Pampanga, where he and his Chinese partners built a gasoline station and four large warehouses, among others.

JV of Negros power coop, firm a ‘good’ deal—Poe

SENATOR Grace Poe said the joint venture between a Negros Occidental electric cooperative and a private company that committed to reducing the power rate in the region by P1 per kilowatt-hour is a “good arrangement.”

The Senate is conducting a hearing on applicants for a power franchise to ensure that it is only granted to “qualified and responsible” entities.

On Tuesday, the franchise application of the joint venture between the Central Negros Electric Cooperative (Ceneco) and Primelectric Holdings Inc. (PHI) called Negros Electric and Power Corp (NEPC) faced scrutiny from senators.

Poe, chairperson of the Senate Public Services Committee, stressed that a franchise is a privilege that comes with the responsibility “to give good services to the people.”

She also warne d that a franchise can be revoked if applicants or service providers fail to do their jobs.

“We want to demand more from our service providers,” Poe said, noting that some service providers often “relax,” because the effectivity of a franchise is 25 years.

In the Senate hearing, the NEPC was asked on the power rates that they might impose.

If granted the franchise, NEPC president Roel Castro said they seea lower electricity cost for its consumers in the province. The executive said their current rate in Iloilo is P9.93 per/kWh.

“Just to enlighten the committee, when we entered Iloilo we immediately entered into an emergency power supply agreement with the existing power generators but we negotiated for a lower rate,” he said during the Senate hearing.

“That’s why upon entering, we’re able to immediately reduce the rate by at least about a peso per kilowatthour and we intend to do the same if granted a franchise. We do the same as we enter this joint venture in Central Negros,” he said.

LTO says it will continue e-bike use consultations

THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Thursday vowed to continue holding dialogues and consultations with stakeholders in a bid to come up with appropriate and lawful guidelines amid mounting concerns on electronic bikes and e-trikes. LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II said the conduct of more consultative meetings is in line with the instruction of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista to gather the viewpoints of different groups and stakeholders before the adoption of guidelines on whether or not e-bikes and e-trikes must be registered, and that their riders must be holders of

a driver’s license.

“We share the concerns raised by motorists on the aspect of road safety involving the presence of e-bikes and e-trikes on national roads and even on major thoroughfares,” he said.

“In as much as we want to set the rules for them, there are various factors that must be considered like an existing law that promotes their ownership and use, as well as the programs and projects by local government units using these e-vehicles for their constituents,” he added.

A week ago, the LTO chief spearheaded the conduct of a dialogue with transport groups and organizations that supported e-vehicles.

On the brink: The West Philippine Sea in turmoil

IN THE turbulent waters of the West Philippine Sea, a sinister dance unfolds between giants and underdogs, as China’s aggression casts a pall over the region, leaving destruction and discord in its wake.

The recent collision between vessels operated by the Chinese and Philippine coast guards is not merely an isolated incident; it is a chilling symptom of a much deeper malaise—a malaise born of China’s insatiable thirst for dominance and its disdain for international law and order.

The facts are stark and undeniable.

The Philippine Coast Guard, engaged in a routine resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal, found themselves besieged by Chinese vessels – vessels hell-bent on intimidation and coercion.

tion, condemning China’s actions as unprovoked and unwarranted.

They speak of lives endangered, of Filipinos injured, and of territorial integrity threatened by China’s belligerence.

Yet, in the face of these grave provocations, China remains defiant, cloaking its actions in the guise of legality while trampling upon the rights of its neighbors with impunity.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, in a display of brazen hypocrisy, accuses the Philippines of trespassing into Chinese territory – a claim as ludicrous as it is baseless.

Her words ring hollow, devoid of truth and morality, as China seeks to justify its aggression through deception and deceit.

But let us not be deceived.

Let us not be swayed by the siren song of China’s propaganda machine.

Let us instead heed the call of justice and stand in solidarity with the Philippines as they confront the tyranny of China’s expansionist ambitions.

El Niño causes big losses to farmers

THE current El Niño weather phenomenon has caused extensive damage to agriculture, with nearly P1 billion worth of crops as of the end of last month.

According data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), Western Visayas posted the highest crop losses worth P564 million, followed by Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) with P319.8 million, and the Ilocos region with P54.5 million.

planted in 1,064 hectares.

The total losses in the agriculture sector could shoot up in the weeks ahead until April when El Niño is expected to wind down, according to experts.

—“—
The concerned government agencies appear to be responding quite well to the adverse impact of El Niño on the agriculture sector

Water interruptions due to El Niño have also been reported in Western Visayas and the Zamboanga Peninsula.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration declared the onset of El Niño on July 4 last year. The government’s Task Force El Niño said the impact of a strong El Niño would affect 80 of the country’s 82 provinces.

Farmers are appealing to the government to provide them with subsidies and other forms of assistance to help them recover. Government weather forecasters said about 240,000 hectares of farms might be directly affected by the drought, mostly in the northern portions of Isabela and southern portions of Cagayan.

Dangerous maneuvers, reckless actions, and the deployment of water cannons became the weapons of choice in China’s arsenal of aggression, leaving the brave Filipino sailors battered and bruised, their vessel scarred by the collision.

But the wounds run deeper than mere physical damage.

They cut to the heart of sovereignty, of justice, and of the fundamental rights of nations to exist free from fear and coercion.

Footnotes

Let us demand accountability, not appeasement; justice, not justification.

The international community must rise to the occasion and hold China accountable for its actions.

The 2016 ruling by an international tribunal in The Hague must be upheld and enforced, for it represents the beacon of hope in a sea of uncertainty – a beacon that guides us towards a future where the rule of law prevails over the rule of might.

But let us not stop there.

Let us go further and forge a path towards lasting peace and stability in the South China Sea.

Let us work tirelessly to establish a code of conduct with Beijing – a code that respects the rights of all nations, big and small, and ensures that disputes are resolved through dialogue, not coercion.

In the end, the choice is ours to make.

Will we succumb to the darkness that lurks beneath the waves, or will we stand together in solidarity and defiance against the tyranny of aggression?

The answer lies in our hands, and the time to act is now.

Let justice be our guide, and let peace be our reward.

Evolution of narcissism as a character trait (Part 2)

ACCORDING to Reich, “[n]arcissists’ opinions of others also dramatically shift in cycles because others are used as tools to build up their egos. In grandiose times, others are seen as downward comparison targets but in despairing times, others are seen as inspirational upward comparison targets” (A Brief History of Narcissism, University of Michigan Library).

In turn, “[Heinz] Kohut wrote extensively on narcissism and, like Freud, he too believed narcissism was a healthy and normal part of development and ‘neither pathological nor obnoxious.’

Will we succumb to the darkness that lurks beneath the waves, or will we stand together in solidarity and defiance against the tyranny of aggression? —“—

However, unlike Freud, he believed primary narcissism was a state of undifferentiated union with the mother rather than a state of total self-absorption…” (ibid.).

“Kohut posited the two trajectories of the idealized parent and the grandiose self are initially created to cope when ‘the balance of primary narcissism is disturbed…’”

He believed there could be unhealthy expressions of the grandiose self “through parental ‘rejection and overindulgence’ [or] if the grandiose self has not evolved into a realistic sense of selfworth…” (ibid.).

In 1975, Otto Kernberg “wrote extensively on narcissistic disorders, believing that they were a subtype of borderline personality disorders. In his definition of narcissism, he offered specific behaviors that can be used to classify someone as having a pathological narcissistic personality” (ibid.).

Interestingly, Kernberg viewed narcissists as having “little empathy for the feelings of others, they obtain very little enjoyment from life other than from the tributes they receive from others or from their own grandiose fantasies, and they feel restless and bored when external glitter wears off and no new sources feed their self-regard” (ibid.).

“They envy others, tend to idealize some people from whom they expect narcissistic supplies and to depreciate and treat with contempt those from whom they do not expect anything (often their former idols). In general, their relationships with other people are clearly exploitative and sometimes parasitic…” (ibid.).

Kohut believed there could be unhealthy expressions of the grandiose self ‘through parental ‘rejection and overindulgence’

To Kernberg, “the pathological narcissist has fused self as it is with the self as it wants to be and the ideal other. To pathological narcissists anyone outside of this real self / ideal self / ideal object fusion is seen as ‘basically dishonest and unreliable’ [and] [t]heir greatest fear is being dependent on other people…” (ibid.).

He “speculated there could be genetic tendencies toward aggressiveness or a low tolerance for anxiety.

He also thought it was at least partly environmental, caused by ‘chronically cold parental figures…’ [and] [n]arcissists also ‘often occupy a pivotal point in their family structure, such as being the only child, or the only ‘brilliant’ child, or the one who is supposed to fulfill the family aspirations’” (ibid.).

“At around the same time as Kernberg

The agency reported that as of the end of February, 24 provinces in Luzon and a province in the Visayas had potential for meteorological drought conditions, 17 provinces for dry spell, while 10 provinces for dry conditions.

The Department of Agriculture, for its part, has reported that in Cagayan Valley, corn farmers have incurred P180 million in losses, mostly in rainfed farms.

In Negros Occidental, the provincial government has reported more than P55 million in losses to rice and corn

However, the government has already rendered more than P362 million worth of assistance to farmers in the Mimaropa region who had borne the brunt of the dry spell. The weather phenomenon, characterized by below-normal rainfall conditions, has so far affected 16,709 farmers and fisherfolk and nearly 15,000 hectares of crops around the country.

Rich harvest from Australia visit

THE recent visit to Australia of President Marcos Jr. appears an unqualified success as it not only strengthened our political and defense ties but also led to enhanced trade and investment relations.

Marcos pointed out in his remarks before the Australian Parliament that the Philippines was on the “frontline” of a battle for regional peace as he sought support in maritime disputes with China: “In Australia we see a natural partner in our efforts to defend, preserve, to uphold our open, inclusive, and rulesbased international order, to ensure that it remains governed by international law and informed by the principles of equity and justice.”

The president emphasized that defense and security remain a key area of cooperation between our two countries and that we look forward to more joint activities and the capacity-building efforts along this direction.

We should point out that Australia is the only nation other than the United States to have a visiting forces agreement with the Philippines. Last year, Manila and Canberra held joint military exercises in the disputed waters of the West Philippine Sea.

Enhanced ties since then as shown by the Marcos visit have yielded agreements to strengthen civil and defense maritime commitments and cooperation on cyber technology.

The leaders of the two countries also signed a memorandum of understanding on enhanced maritime cooperation aimed at boosting collaboration in civil maritime security, marine environment protection and maritime domain awareness, as well as upholding international law.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, for his part, announced a $20-million investment to support the Philippines in instituting reforms in its justice system.

Manila and Canberra actually upgrad-

was actively writing on narcissism from a clinical perspective, historian and cultural critic Christopher Lasch published his book Culture of Narcissism, borrowing ideas from the clinical literature. In his book he tries to offer a historical analysis of what he saw as the increasing prevalence of narcissism in society” (ibid.).

“Research on narcissism began to accelerate in the 1980s…[t]he spike in research in the 1980s occurred after narcissism was included as a personality disorder in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSMIII)…” “Studies also indicate that Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is more frequently found among people with

ed bilateral ties in September 2023 to a strategic partnership amid rising security challenges in the region. Marcos was also invited to deliver a keynote speech at the Lowy Institute where he shared his views on the Philippine perspective on “great power” rivalries.

—“—

With enhanced defense and economic cooperation between the Philippines and Australia, we can look forward to even closer relations anchored on mutual trust and mutual benefit in the years ahead

He is the first Philippine President to speak before the forum. He said “the pursuit of the great powers’ respective strategic goals must never come at the expense of the interests of smaller states, nor of regional and international peace” as he underscored the importance of a rules-based international order.

The President also said he expects stronger trade and economic relations between the Philippines and Australia.

Greater economic cooperation, he said, would allow the Philippines to be resilient amid economic shocks, and provide an enabling environment for businesses and

higher education or special professional groups…” (ibid.).

In 1979, “Raskin & Hall developed the Narcissistic Personality Inventory based on the DSM-III criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and later revised it to its current 40-item forced choice version. This is the most widely used scale in narcissism research…” (ibid.).

In 1999, Campbell opined that “[i]n romantic relationships narcissists are attracted to partners who are high in status and full of admiration for them, and tend not to pursue relationships in order to fulfill needs for intimacy or closeness. People are attracted to them at first and

On the sidelines of his second visit to Australia for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-Australia Special Summit earlier this month, Marcos managed to secure business deals worth $1.53 billion (P86 billion). These consisted of 10 memoranda of understanding between Filipino and Australian business leaders and two letters of intent from Australian business leaders interested in setting up shop in the Philippines.

The agreements span diverse sectors, such as renewable energy, waste-to-energy technology, organic recycling technology, countryside housing initiatives, establishment of a data center, manufacture of health technology solutions, and digital health services, among others.

The visit also led to a partnership between the National Development Co. and an Australian firm for the transfer of the latter’s biowaste-to-green fuel technology. The NDC aims to establish a globally recognized institute in the Philippines called the Southeast Asia Biosecurity Institute, focused on developing more robust supply chains for biosecurity across Southeast Asia.

At present, based on reports of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, 130 Australian-owned companies are currently located in economic zones across the Philippines.

These companies have invested P14.28 billion, employ more than 55,000 Filipinos and generate almost $1 billion in annual exports.

During a meeting with the Filipino community in Melbourne, the president commended them for being hardworking and passionate in integrating themselves in the diverse Australian society and to contribute to the betterment of their adoptive communities.

In fact, Australia hosts the fifth-largest Filipino immigrant community numbering around 400,000, who are also contributing to the Philippine economy through remittances to their families back home. With enhanced defense and economic cooperation between the Philippines and Australia, we can look forward to even closer relations anchored on mutual trust and mutual benefit in the years ahead.

Further studies in the new millennium showed that relationships with “[n] arcissists… can initially be exciting but that they are lacking in intimacy. It follows then that they are likely to be gameplayers in romantic relationships and constantly on the lookout for someone better, even when involved in serious committed relationships” (ibid.).

“When someone does something that hurts or offends them, narcissists are quite unforgiving of offenses as compared to others.” (ibid.).

PLDT Inc. said Thursday it expects

core net income to settle “north of P35 billion” this year after posting a stellar performance in 2023.

PLDT said in a disclosure to the stock exchange its reported net income grew 154 percent to P26.6 billion in 2023 from a year earlier.

Core net income, excluding the impact of asset sales and Maya Innovations Holdings, reached P34.3 billion in 2023, up 3 percent, or P1 billion, from the previous year.

Consolidated service revenues grew by 1 percent to P2.2 billion to a record P191.4 billion in 2023 led by data and broadband, which grew by 4 percent to P157.6 billion. This segment contributed 82 percent of consolidated service revenues.

Pangilinan said in a news briefing the group was also anticipating a mid-single growth in consolidated

service revenue and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).

“PLDT is charting a bold, new course, armed by strategic foresight and our unwavering commitment to excellence. Our updated vision is to reshape the PLDT Group, strengthening our market leadership, pursuing growth and value, and spearheading our transformative drive towards becoming a Digico,” Pangilinan said.

Pangilinan said PLDT planned to partially sell its stake in its data center business to pay down debt. He did not divulge the value of the transaction.

He said the group was in talks with foreign data center operators for the transaction and was hoping to complete the sale this year.

NTC blocks apps offering illegal investments

THE National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) ordered the blocking of websites and apps allegedly perpetuating investment scams.

Aquino said the directive of the NTC would help prevent the proliferation of investment scams.

“The SEC and NTC will continue to work closely together to take similar actions on other platforms facili-

The SEC requested for the blocking of MiTrade’s website in February after it found that the entity was actively employing promotional campaigns on various social media platforms to attract and entice Filipinos to engage in investment and trading activities using its platforms.

MiTrade offered the trading of financial instruments from a wide range of asset classes such as foreign currency pairs, foreign shares, index funds and commodity derivatives, the SEC said.

DBP works with DOF to amend 26-year-old corporate charter

STATE-OWNED Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) said it is working closely with the Department of Finance (DOF), state regulators and legislators in introducing reforms in its 26-year-old charter to cater to the demands of an ever-changing market and rapidly-evolving economic landscape.

DBP president and chief executive Michael de Jesus said the bank wanted to hike its authorized capital stock from P35 billion to P300 billion to enable the bank to broaden its credit assistance to priority sectors and broaden its menu of financial products and services.

“We are working hand-in-hand with all stakeholders especially the DOF in ensuring that DBP would be able to finance more developmental projects especially in the countryside,” de Jesus said.

“These amendments are needed to

boost our financial position and make the Bank responsive to the evolving needs of our clients,” he said.

DBP is the eighth largest bank in the country in terms of assets and was designated as the infrastructure bank by the national government.

It has a branch network of 146 full-fledged branches and branch lite units, most of which are located in underserved and unbanked areas of the country.

DBP’s charter was last amended in 1998 through Republic Act No. 8523, which raised the bank’s authorized capital stock from P5 billion to P35 billion. The bank was originally founded as the Rehabilitation Finance Corporation, which was part of mechanisms to jumpstart reconstruction and economic revival after the devastation of World War II.

The bank attributed the increase in CASA to renewed focus on cash management services, specifically geared towards the micro, small and medium enterprises sector. This allowed the bank to sustain its net interest margin of 7.6 percent.

EEI Power Corp., the power subsidiary of EEI Corp., signed a deal for the construction of a 145.2 kilowattpeak solar PV rooftop system with Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital (DDVMH) in Mayombo District, Dagupan City.

The solar rooftop project, comprised of 264 units of 550 wattpeak monocrystalline photovoltaic solar panels, is expected to produce an average annual energy output of 183,680 kilowatt-hours.

It is also projected to curtail carbon emission by about 128 metric tons annually, or equivalent to planting 2,150 trees.

The solar PV system is estimated to save DDVMH up to P20 million in electricity expenses over its 25-year lifespan.

INTERNATIONAL visitor arrivals reached 1.227 million as of March 5, 2024, up by 22.86 percent from 999,390 registered in the same period in 2023.

“I would like to express my profound gratitude first to all our Philippine sellers who continue to champion Philippine tourism. [The growth] was a robust indication of the future of Philippine tourism,” Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco told Filipino exhibitors at the Philippine Pavilion during the Internationale TourismusBörse (ITB) 2024 convention in Berlin, Germany. South Korea remained the top source market for visitors, contributing 349,956 or 28.50 percent of the total. The United States followed with 195,603 or 15.93 percent, China with 85,876 or 6.99 percent, Japan with 73,159 or 5.96 percent and Canada with 50,555 or 4.12 percent.

Rounding up the top ten markets were Australia at 4.11 percent, Taiwan at 3.5 percent, the UK at 2.48 percent, Singapore at 2.06 percent and 1.7 percent from Germany.

THE Philippine National Railways (PNR) will soon halt its rail operations in Metro Manila, according to sources.

PNR did not confirm the report, but said it would make the official announcement Friday.

The state-run company operates a commuter rail service between Tutuban, Manila and Binan, Laguna as well as a 101-kilometer route between Naga City and Legazpi City in Bicol region.

PNR announced last year that it would suspend its Metro Manila operations in 2024 to give way for the construction of the 147-kilometer North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR).

NSCR is among the biggest infrastructure flagship projects of the Marcos administration, together with the Metro Manila Subway Project.

The agency said the suspension of the rail service for five years would affect more than 35,000 daily commuters.

The NSCR, a railway network with 37 stations and 464 train cars, will have three segments—the PNR Clark Phase 1 (Tutuban-Malolos), PNR Clark Phase 2 (MalolosClark) and PNR Calamba (SolisCalamba).

It is expected to begin partial operations from west Valenzuela to Malolos in the second quarter of 2027, while full operation will start in the third quarter of 2029.

The project aims to reduce travel time between Clark, Pampanga and Calamba, Laguna to just two hours and service over 800,000 passengers daily once operational. It is estimated to cost P873.62 billion.

FACTORY output grew 1.9 percent year-on-year in January 2024, the Philippine Statistics Authority said Thursday.

“The VoPI [volume of production index] for manufacturing registered a year-on-year increment of 1.9 percent in January 2024, which was faster than the annual growth rate of 1.6 percent in the previous month.

In January 2023, VoPI recorded an annual increase of 7.3 percent,” the PSA said.

The report highlighted the slower annual decline in the manufacture of computer, electronic, and optical products at 7.1 percent in January 2024 compared with its double-digit annual decline of 16.5 percent in the previous month. The manufacture of computer, electronic, and optical products contributed 28.9 percent to the uptrend of VoPI for the manufacturing section in January 2024.

Other main contributors to the higher growth of VoPI in January were the slower annual decrement in the manufacture of beverages at 0.3 percent, compared with a 14.0 percent annual decrease in the previous month, and the double-digit annual increase observed in the manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment, at 11.5 percent in January 2024 from its annual decline of 11.7 percent in the previous month.

Yulo tests mettle of Baku field; 2 Fil-Ams try to boost Paris bids

PARIS Olympics-bound Carlos Yulo will test the quality of the field in the Baku leg of the 2024 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series this weekend in Azerbaijan.

And while Yulo is already assured of a berth in the Paris games, his teammates, two Filipino-American standouts in Emma Malabuyo and Lee Jung-Ruvivar will aim for points to boost their bids of making it to the Olympics.

Yulo, coming out of a series of training camps that started in South Korea, will be in the third segment of a four-leg qualifier for the quadrennial meet.

The 24-year-old Yulo, who already clinched a seat in the Paris Games with Fil-American Aleah Finnegan as early as last year, will just try to find out what shape he is in, after parting ways with former

Yulo will be in the company of gymnastics stars from the People’s Republic of China, which sent a strong team that includes Olympic parallel bars champion Zou Jingyuan and 2015 world champion You Hao in the mix.

All three will seek to challenge Ukrainian star Illia Kovtun’s dominance.

As for Malabuyo and Ruvivar they will try to be in the company of Finnegan, a former member of Team USA like Malabuyo.

At the World Championships last year, Finnegan finished 32nd in the all-around, qualifying her for the 2024 Summer Olympics as an individual and making her the first Filipina female gymnast to reach the quadrennial since 1964.

While in the Cottbus leg two weeks ago, the Mountainview, California-born Malabuyo got 14 Olympic qualification points from her effort after scoring 12.6 points during the preliminaries in the women’s floor exercises.

Malabuyo, who is a five-time member of the US National Team before switching federations after the Tokyo Olympics, dropped from no. 1 during the Cairo stop to

no. 2 in the Olympic qualification rankings when she left Germany to prepare for the Baku meet. Amassing a total of 44 points, Malabuyo is now behind Charlize Moerz of Austria, who owns the no. 1 position with 50 points, after snatching for the country the bronze medal in Cottbus. The 17-year-old Ruvivar, an incoming student-athlete at Stanford University, settled for 12th in the uneven bars prelims with 13.33 points and missed the finals. This gave the Los Angeles, California-born Ruvivar 12 points to stay at no. 6 in the 2024 Apparatus World Cup’s Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Reallocated Points Rankings of the International Gymnastics Federation. “I’m very determined. No matter how I score at the next two meets, I have to say I am proud and honored to be representing the Philippines on the international stage. There are so many talented gymnasts at these competitions and I am enjoying gaining the experience and also look forward to a long future of elite gymnastics,” said Ruvivar in an interview with the Manila Standard.

Strawweight champ Pacio in good spirits after accident

JOSHUA “The Passion” Pacio allayed fears on his well-being and assured his supporters that he’s doing just fine after his freak incident with Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks at ONE 166: Qatar at Lusail Sports Arena.

“I saw God’s protection for me, I saw his glory in there. It’s not the victory, but how he actually protected me during that accident,” he said, in good spirits despite still wearing a neck brace.

Pacio reclaimed the ONE Strawweight MMA World Championship after Brooks was disqualified for an illegal slam, spiking the Filipino’s head to the mat.

It was a nerve-wracking moment for everyone especially with how the Lions Nation MMA stud hardly moved after the bell rung. Pacio shared: “I was semi-unconscious during that time. I felt like I was standing up and fighting, but my body wasn’t responding. [Brooks’] punch actually brought me back to consciousness.”

T he result of the match was the least of everyone’s concerns as everyone held their breath on Pacio’s condition—including that of Eduard “Landslide” Folayang.

“I actually didn’t know that I won the fight when I was headed to the hospital. Kuya Eduard Folayang was talking to me, and he actually didn’t tell me because his focus was entirely on my wellbeing. When we were in the hospital, that’s when I found out the result,” he said.

PSC taps MASTS for grassroots program in Mindanao

THE Philippine Sports Commission continues its on-ground visits in the Mindanao region as part of its commitment to intensify the national grassroots sports program delivered across all islands of the nation.

Commissioner Edward Hayco, who oversees the agency’s grassroots development program, spoke in front of sports leaders at the National Grassroots Sports Summit Workshop conducted by the Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools Inc. (MASTS) at the Josefina H. Cerilles State College in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.

Hayco encouraged the 35-member institution of MASTS to be one of the PSC’s arm in implementing the national grassroots initiative program by being the regional training hub for young athletes on the way up to their dream of being part of the national pool.

“We believe that future Olympians do not only come from Manila, most of them can be discovered from the out-

skirts away from the city,” Hayco said. He stressed that this will open wider opportunities for young athletes, who excelled from major competitions like the Batang Pinoy, Philippine National Games, and Palarong Pambansa.

Sports leaders were also taught extra lessons, like building a network among the local government unit for sourcing funds and lobbying a locally-based grassroots program for its continuity and expansion all throughout the years.

“We’re teaching them to be completepackage sports leaders and to be aware that you don’t need to be a high-ranking sports official to nurture an Olympian,” Hayco stated.

Last January, PSC chairman Richard Bachmann made dialogues among certain sports stakeholders in six Mindanaoan cities like Davao City, Cotabato City, Iligan City, Marawi City, and Ozamis and Tangub City in Misamis Occidental for the improvement of regional sports facilities available for all Mindanaoans, and promotion of peace and inclusivity through sports.

UAAP’s jr. basketball wars begin Saturday

THE University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) announces the commencement of its inaugural Junior High School Basketball Tournament, beginning Saturday at the UST Quadricentennial Gym.

The demonstration event, an under-16 competition, features seven schools, namely Adamson University, Ateneo High School, De La SalleZobel, Far Eastern University-Diliman, National University Nazareth School, University of Santo Tomas, and University of the East.

Each of these institutions will take turns hosting the tournament throughout its duration.

UAAP Season 86 president Rodrigo Roque of UE expressed the importance of adding another division to its high school ranks, stating, “We recognize the need for nurturing our young talents at the high school level. Introducing a dedicated division for Junior High School student-athletes is a crucial step, ensuring equal exposure that becomes the bedrock for their development in higher competitions. This move not only hones their skills early but also readies them for the road ahead.”

The tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. with an exciting matchup between UST and FEU-D, followed by NUNS versus ADU at 11 a.m., and UE against DLSZ at 1 p.m.

The highlight of the opening day will be the 11 a.m. clash between the Baby Falcons and the Bullpups, a rematch of the recent High School Boys’ Finals where Adamson secured its first crown in the sport since 1993.

According to Baby Falcons head coach Mike Fermin and Bullpups head coach Kevin de Castro, they will field new Grade 10 and below players for this tournament.

Ziv Espinas and the Blue Eagles will make their debut on Saturday, March 16, facing Kieffer Alas and the Junior Archers at 11:00 a.m. at Adamson Gym. Day 3 of the tournament, scheduled for Sunday, March 24, will take place at FEU-FERN Diliman Gym.

Following the elimination round, the top four teams will advance to the knockout semis on April 27, with the championship game set to be a winnertake-all match.

Nadal abandons latest return with withdrawal

INDIAN WELLS—Rafael Nadal abandoned his planned ATP Tour comeback at the Indian Wells Masters on Wednesday, saying he was not ready for the demands of tournament tennis on the eve of his opening match in California.

The Spanish icon’s bombshell decision came four days after the 37-year-old lost a Las Vegas exhibition to compatriot and world number two Carlos Alcaraz.

Nadal missed almost all of the 2023 season with abdominal and other injuries and has played only the Brisbane International this season, where he suffered a flare-up of a hip injury.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion had been due to open at Indian Wells on Thursday against Canada’s former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic.

“It is with great sadness that I have to withdraw from this amazing tournament at Indian Wells,” Nadal said in a statement.

“I have been working hard ... but I don’t find myself ready to play at the highest level at such an important event.

“It is not an easy decision, it’s a tough one as a matter of fact but I can’t lie to myself and lie to the thousands of fans.

“I will miss you all and I am sure the tournament will be a great success.”

Indian Wells tournament director

Tommy Haas expressed disappointment at Nadal’s withdrawal.

“We wish him continued healing and hope he can be back in action again soon,” Haas said. “He is one of the all-

time fan favorites here, and we hope to see him back in Indian Wells again in the future.”

On Sunday, Nadal had given an encouraging performance in his Las Vegas clash with Alcaraz.

After suffering a muscle tear in Brisbane in January, Nadal withdrew from the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season.

Dogged by injuries He then scrapped plans to return to action at the Qatar Open in February, saying he was “not ready to compete.”

Injuries have been a recurring theme of Nadal’s record-breaking career, a by-product of his all-action, brutal-hitting style that has led to serious knee, wrist and foot problems.

During his career, Nadal dominated the French Open, where he won 14 of his majors, his first arriving just days after his 19th birthday in 2005, his last in 2022 making him the event’s oldest champion. He is a four-time champion at the US Open, won Wimbledon in 2008 and 2010, and is a two-time winner at the Australian Open—with 13 years spanning his first triumph at Melbourne Park in 2009 and his second in 2022.

Wednesday’s withdrawal at Indian Wells will stoke inevitable speculation about the Spaniard’s retirement date. AFP

THE Philippine Men’s National Football Team will fly to Dubai for a four-day training camp in the United Arab Emirates next weekend. From the initial announcement made by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), the national team, formerly known as the Azkals, will train in Dubai from March 16-20, 2024. The same announcement mentioned that the final squad will be revealed before the team leaves for the Middle East.

A press conference is set on the 20th with new Coach Tom Saintfiet and team captain and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge. The team will then leave for Basra to face Iraq on March 22. After the away game in Iraq, the team will return to the country for its home game against the same opponents on March 26 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Another presser is set with Saintfiet, plus another player on the 25th.

A source told The Designated Kit Man that

Saintf iet is scouting and probably convincing foreign bas ed Filipino players to suit for the sun and three stars soon. He will meet the rest of the team (for those who are not flying out of Manila) in Dubai for the short camp before the game against Iraq.On the local front, there are at least 34 players, who are trying to impress the coaching staff why they should be part of the Dubai Camp.

A source told The Designated Kit Man that Saintfiet is in Europe scouting and probably convincing foreign-based Filipino players to suit for the sun and three stars soon. He will meet the team in Dubai for the short camp before the game against Iraq.

A check with someone close to Rasmussen, however, revealed that nothing is definite yet with his availability to return to the national team. Rasmussen currently plays forward for Hobro in the Danish 1st Division. Several months ago, the same source told me that Rasmussen was very inclined to make his return in the World and Asian Cup qualifiers.

Just hoping that Saintfiet and his staff will have enough time to assemble the best team possible against the mighty Iraqis.

DAVAO—Kuresh Samanodi underscored his readiness for a triumphant return to the Philippine Golf Tour, seizing a commanding four-stroke lead despite a 73 as Aidric Chan wavered at the finish in the third round of the Philippine Golf Tour Q-School here Thursday. Despite enduring a four-bogey setback in hot, windy conditions, Samanodi hit a clutch birdie on the seventh and gunned down an eagle on the par-5 No. 12, his 38-35 round not only cushioning the impact of his first over-par card in three days but also pulling away from the chasing pack with a four-under 212 total.

“I think my score today (Thursday) was OK,” said Samanodi, who norms 290-300 yards off the mound. “Marami kasing missed shots at missed putts. But I’m okay with the 73.” Chan, four strokes behind Samanodi halfway through the 72-hole elims granting 30 slots in this year’s PGT

unfolding at Apo Golf next week, momentarily took control with a three-birdie binge from No. 7 for a 33. However, challenges at the backside of the South Pacific Golf and Leisure Estates course, including bogeys on Nos. 10 and 16 and a double-bogey finish, resulted in a 40 and a 73.

“Some of the greens are really slow. I had a 30-40 birdie putt on No. 16 and three-putted,” said Chan, who also muffed a birdie opportunity on the next.

“On No. 18, I hit it over the fence and ended up with another three-putt,” said Chan, who however remains optimistic about transitioning smoothly from his decorated amateur career to the professional ranks with a 216 total. “I just have to clean up for some mistakes and give myself a chance for more birdies,” he added.

Korean amateur Min Hyeok Yu likewise seemed poised to clinch his PGT card with a 217 after a 72, alongside former national team mainstay Kristoffer Arevalo and Japanese Ozeki Kakeru, who tied for fourth

The 14-year-old racing prodigy will compete in the junior category of the racing competitions that is expected to draw the participation of the best karters in the region on March 30-31. Last year, Sy was the overall champion in the ROK GP Super Karting after winning five out of the six rounds of the competitions.

But before that, Sy will fly to France to train under the famous 321 Fitness Center, where F1 drivers go to further hone their skills. Sy will be in the 321 Fitness Center for at least 10 days. And the kid and professional driver in him are both looking forward to the opportunity.

“Since they have so much equipment and research done, they know exactly what exercises or training that will further improve my strong suits and address my weaknesses not only on the physical side but on the mental aspect as well. I’ll be training there under stress while making fast decisions,” Sy said.

As early as now, Sy has his career planned out to accomplish his ultimate dream. That is to become the country’s first-ever F1 driver.

“The pinnacle of every racer’s goal is to race in F1 and I want to join or at least do F1 testing when I’m 19 or 20, which is the earliest possible time,” he added. While the goal is daunting to say the least, Sy is determined to do the hard work, the long hours of training, the discipline and the sacrifices needed to achieve his goal. Stay safe. Stay happy peeps!

Defying expectations

Walking in the shoes of empowered

Marissa del Mar

OVERSEAS Filipino Workers (OFW) PartyList Representative Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino is a woman whose journey from the glitz of showbiz to the corridors of power exemplifies the strength of a woman.

She never thought she would enter politics. She already felt content helping OFWs through her TV shows like Buhay-OFW and Up Close and Personal with Marissa del Mar. But it was the OFWs themselves who convinced her to run in the last elections because they saw the assistance she was providing.

Not letting her supporters down, Marissa has authored over 50 resolutions, all aimed at assisting Filipino workers abroad.

For those unfamiliar, Marissa entered the showbiz industry in the 1980s, starring in numerous films. She co-starred alongside notable actors (who also ventured into politics) like Jinggoy Estrada, Lito Lapid, Christopher de Leon, and Phillip Salvador, to name a few.

Marissa’s journey into politics wasn’t by design but by the call of duty. Her deep-rooted commitment to serving the Filipino community, nurtured during her time in the entertainment industry, found a new platform as she championed the rights and welfare of OFWs.

“I was filming in a foreign country when I witnessed the difficult conditions faced by the Filipino production crew. The harsh winter weather exacerbated their plight. I informed the producer and the director I wouldn’t film unless you treat them well. Two days later, they addressed the issue, and production resumed,” she recounted to Manila Standard Life during a candid conversation with select members of the press after a Pandesal Forum held at Wilson Lee Flores’ Kamuning Bakery on Wednesday.

“Seeing the unfavorable conditions my fellow Filipinos endured abroad ignited this advocacy within me. This is not a fleeting endeavor; it began way back in the 1980s when I was filming international movies. A lot of us don’t the stories behind their sacrifices, some people think that when you’re abroad you’re already doing well,” Marissa added.

Driven by a desire to understand the realities faced by OFW, Marissa travels to various countries. Her focus lies on vulnerable populations, specifically those who have been victims of maltreatment, human trafficking, or exploitation by syndicates. Despite the inherent risks involved in her sensitive role, Marissa expresses gratitude for the constant support and coordination provided by embassies, which allows her to safely carry out her mission.

“The embassy helps me from the time I arrive until I leave. For me, I don’t argue with the labor departments of the countries I visit. I negotiate for the respect and dignity of Filipino workers. Filipino workers are easy to talk to because of our language; they are proficient in English,” she said.

Marissa also said she is in a good position now because, at

Marissa ‘Del Mar’ Magsino has authored more than 50 resolutions as the OFW Party-List Representative first, she used her own money to help OFWs, but now she can help more because of government assistance.

“You’re using government funds that are meant for the people. Let’s give it to them,” Marissa added.

Asked if she misses the limelight, she said she could go back anytime, but her main focus now is her responsibilities as a lawmaker. She is currently fine-tuning a bill seeking to expand the voting methods for OFWs.

“Right now, I am pushing for internet voting for OFWs. Their contribution to our economy is significant. There are circumstances where they cannot vote. Among the 1.8 million registered voters who are OFWs, only 600 thousand were able to vote in the last election because some were working and could not leave their jobs. We understand their situation abroad; it’s not easy to take time off work to vote,” explained Marissa.

The congresswoman said that she is working closely with COMELEC to select the company that can provide the service. They are meticulously checking which company has the best system to combat hacking and other attempts to rig votes.

“They presented it to the Commission on Election, and I was there, and we were able to check their system. I’m leaving that up to the COMELEC,” she said.“We’re doing this so that Filipinos abroad can exercise their right to suffrage.”

Marissa is pushing for many laws, and she doesn’t back down even though she is new to politics.

“They say that passing a law in one term is a long shot, but hopefully, I can pass two laws,” she said.

Her background as an actress has helped her in her role in Congress, according to Marissa.

“We are more confident speaking in front of many people. When I was new in Congress, people thought I was just all about looks but I immediately gave a privilege speech, and my colleagues asked, ‘Where do you get the confidence?’ I said I got it from experience, and I’m willing to share it with them,” she ended.
