WHAT THE DICKENS?

ABSENT FRIENDS

THE TRENCH

Young Charles Dickens is reporting for The Morning Chronicle when he accidently stumbles on a story that could make his reputation. Expect a world of pockmarked pickpockets, cobwebby convicts, teeming slums and empty marshes, dark secrets and convoluted plots, and lots and lots of fog…

By Alan Ayckbourn It’s always good to see old friends – isn’t it? All Diana wants to do is to console the recently bereaved Colin with a gathering of old friends and a nice cup of tea. But the reunion succeeds only in pouring salt into wounds, and what a shame Gordon couldn't come, being so poorly. Ayckbourn treats this roadcrash of a party with a typical sureness of touch – it is at times sad and touching, but always bitingly funny. At least Colin seems to be enjoying his bereavement. Bench are an award-winning amateur theatre group.

This inventive comedy features just three actors playing over 20 roles in 80 minutes of fastpaced fun. Brimming with unfeasibly quick costume changes, stupidly surreal characters and wonderfully daft jokes, it is the most absurd contribution to the Dickens bicentenary you could hope to see.

The award-winning team behind The Terrible Infants present a play inspired by the story of a miner who became entombed in a tunnel during WW1. As the horror engulfs him, not everything in the darkness is what it seems when he discovers a strange world beneath the mud and death. Blending live music, mime, film, puppetry and physical performance, The Trench is the eagerly anticipated new show “from razor sharp theatre company,” Les Enfants Terribles (The Telegraph).
