BUYING TICKETS

We know that life can be very busy so we want to help you by making it even easier to purchase tickets to our events. To help us improve our service we will soon be replacing our ticketing system. We hope to make it quicker and easier to buy tickets, whether you choose to do so in person, over the phone or online. As part of the change we will unfortunately not be able to use the computerised ticketing

BOX OFFICE 023 9247 2700 THESPRING.CO.UK

system for a few days in late 2014 or early 2015. We will be letting customers know the exact dates through information on our website and signs in the buildings. We will do our best to continue to operate as normal and will still be happy to answer your questions and sell you tickets throughout the period. We will also be making some changes to our website to make online transactions with us even easier.

We hope that (apart from a newlook website) you won’t even notice the transition to the new system, but please do be patient with our staff and our wonderful Box Office volunteers as we get used to it. We promise that in the long run it will make buying tickets and coming to The Spring even better! Please continue to let us know your thoughts about The Spring and keep in touch.

A JOURNEY ROUND MY SKULL KILN presents A Bristol Old Vic Ferment Commission

Thursday 22 January 7.30pm Tickets: £12.50, £11.25 conc.

A Journey Round My Skull is ‘a beguiling and beautiful’ love story put under the surgeon’s knife. Told by a neurosurgeon who casts the audience as her silent patient, this show gently and playfully transports you to the streets of continental Europe, to a scrap over profiteroles, into neurosurgery and onto the tracks of a ghost train. Part storytelling, part 3D sound design, A Journey Round My Skull operates on the ears as well as the heart to dissect our most intimate relationships. The play was inspired by the auditory hallucinations experienced by Hungarian satirist Frigyes Karinthy as described in his extraordinary medical memoir. At times in tonight’s performance the audience will be asked to wear headphones.

FEBRUARY

THEATRE

ELIZABETH I: VIRGIN ON THE RIDICULOUS Living Spit

Thursday 5 February 8pm Tickets: £12.50, £11.25 concessions Followed by a post-show chat in the bar 1558. England. A country divided by religion and politics, teetering on the brink of civil war. The hopes of the nation lie with one woman. 2013. England. A country divided by those who enjoy plays featuring men in dresses and those who don’t. The hopes of the nation lie with two Bristolian actors. But Howard Coggins and Stuart McLoughlin can no longer rely on apparent physical resemblances to Tudor monarchs. They’ve done Henry VIII, and the truth is neither of them look like anyone else. But they won’t be deterred as they attempt to tell the story of the greatest monarch that ever lived – Elizabeth the Virgin Queen. Following the sellout of The Six Wives of Henry VIII last year, we’re welcoming Howard and Stu back to The Spring with more live original music, silly songs, smutty shenanigans, perfunctory props, and hysterically historical horseplay. This promises to be (another) poorly researched lesson in Tudor history that you’ll never forget. 6 | Box Office 023 9247 2700

LEAVES ON A LINE: LOST AND FOUND Forest Forge Theatre Company

“If there was one thing you could say to your younger self, what would it be?” When a train is mysteriously diverted to a disused Hampshire branch line, one of the passengers is forced to confront the secrets of her past and is given the chance to change her future. In two complementary plays, Lost and Found, performed either side of an interval, Forest Forge Theatre Company explore the eternal issues of youth and old age, the different directions life can take us, and the constantly changing nature of our hopes and dreams. The disused railway lines, derelict platforms and abandoned stations of Hampshire form the haunting backdrop of these two new plays.

A witty, beautiful exploration of Life’s train journey and the decisions we all make along the way. The plays have been written by Dinos Aristidou (Bloom), partly inspired by stories collected from Havant and Hayling Island residents and their memories of the Hayling Billy Line. As part of The Spring’s commitment to touring professional theatre across the Borough of Havant, we have arranged for a performance of Leaves on a Line to take place at The Station Theatre, Hayling Island. Tickets for this performance are available from The Spring.

DR SAM TALK WILLIS: BRITAIN’S GREATEST NAVAL DISPATCHES Thursday 16 April, 8pm Tickets: £12.50, £11.25 conc. Dr Sam Willis is one of the world's leading authorities on maritime and naval history. Author, academic and TV presenter Sam is well recognised for his numerous TV appearances, including BBC2’s recent Operation Grand Canyon. Upon Napoleon’s death, the Lords of the Admiralty ordered that the original dispatches from seven major fleet battles between 1794 and 1815 should be gathered together and presented to the nation. These letters, written by Britain's admirals, captains, surgeons and boatswains, and sent back home in the midst of conflict, were bound in an immense volume. And there they lay, all but untouched until a fateful day in 2010… While working in the British Library Sam rediscovered this fascinating volume. The vivid commentary they provide has enabled Sam to reassess the key engagements in extraordinary detail. This talk tells the story of these naval triumphs, and allows us to hear once more the officers’ voices as they describe the battles that made Britain great.

THEATRE & MUSIC

Friday 17 April, 8pm Tickets: £12.50, £11.25 concessions This sequel to Madam Butterfly imagines what happens in the aftermath of Puccini’s turn-of-thecentury tearjerker.

“A PERFECTLY ROUNDED PIECE OF THEATRE: IGNACIO JARQUIN’S WELL-TRAINED SINGING VOICE LIGHTS UP THE SEVERAL SHORT ARIAS; HIS PORTRAYAL OF THE DEVOTED TOMISABURO IS HEARTRENDING” Camden Review

The lovechild of Butterfly’s affair with the rakish American Lieutenant Pinkerton is all grown up and looking for his runaway father. He tracks him to America where Pinkerton is now Governor of Georgia. Clutching only a suitcase, an image of his grandfather and his late mother’s beautiful wedding fan, Tomisaburo waits in the vast foyer of Pinkerton’s mansion. And waits, and waits… This opera, that will include live singing to recorded music, is inspired by the Noh Theatre tradition of Japanese storytelling, dance and masks. The music has been written by composer Michael Finnissey and responds to themes from Puccini's original score.

VISUAL ART EXHIBITIONS CHRIS BRIDEN: STREET ART

JEWELLERS’ SHOWCASE

Mon 5 Jan – Fri 20 March

We are delighted to welcome Wendy Nutt and Jill Clark as our visiting artists for the first half of 2015.

Since the age of 14 Southampton-based artist Chris Briden has been interested in street art and graffiti. After years of living within a street culture and working in designated legal graffiti sites he has developed a photorealist style. Chris’s work now encompasses wall based graffiti and sprayed images on canvas; this enables him to retain the energy of the street and allows him to take street art to new spaces.

Mon 5 Jan – Fri 3 July

Wendy Nutt is a Dorsetbased designer whose work is inspired by her love of nature, and in particular birds and insects. She particularly likes to explore the use of negative space in her work, and uses techniques such as photo etching and fretwork to achieve crisp designs and silhouettes. Jill Clark’s designs are influenced by the simple
