The Terriers of Carbondale Community High School compete in 18 different sports and utilize the facilities of Carbondale’s unique Super Block, a mega-sports complex featuring baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, running tracks and training facilities. The Student Recreation Center on the SIUC campus offers a variety of sporting and fitness activities including an Olympic-sized swimming pool, aerobic rooms, weight and cardio training facilities, basketball courts, indoor running tracks, racquetball and squash courts and facilities for martial arts, boxing, dance and more. The facility even has an indoor climbing wall. Industry C

arbondale is a great place to grow a business, regardless of scope or specialty. The retail and service sectors continue to grow and prosper in the city. Industrial and manufacturing companies have found Carbondale to be a very pro-business community. The city government invests in business development through its economic development office and through the city’s Enterprise Zone and Tax Increment Financing Districts. Industrial and business facilities and parks can be found in practically every part of town. The Bicentennial Industrial Park on the city’s north side is a 180-acre, highly-desirable location for manufacturers, distributors and service companies. Complete with full infrastructure, the park, which is jointly owned by the City and the Carbondale Business Development Corporation, continues to have parcels ready for development. Carbondale Business Park East features a 30,000-squarefoot multi-tenant office facility with both tax and financing incentives. With easy access to Illinois Route 13, the park is fully developed technologically with four points of telecommunications presence and a diverse path OC-12 SONET ring. The Southern Illinois Research Park is a cooperative effort of Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a number of business partners. A focus of the park is the development of

new businesses which are mentored through SIUC’s Small Business Incubator program. Proximity to the campus gives existing businesses and start-ups easy access to the knowledge and expertise of SIUC’s research community. Just north of downtown is the Carbondale Manufacturers Center, a 15-structure site with more than 325,000 square feet of warehouse and manufacturing space. The center supports an assorted collection of companies.

Cooperative Efforts Businesses succeed in Carbondale, in part, because of the web of support provided by a number of community organizations. The Carbondale Economic Development Office, the Carbondale Convention and Tourism Bureau, Carbondale Main Street, the Carbondale Business Development Corporation, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, SouthernTech, the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce and other groups all work together to make Carbondale a better place to work and live. Easy access to transportation, including rail, air, state highways and interstates, the presence of a nationallyrecognized research university and a diverse and educated workforce makes Carbondale an obvious choice for new businesses or others looking to expand.

It is hoped that ongoing restoration and renovation efforts will enable the facility to enable actors, writers, painters, filmmakers, sculptors, dancers and musicians to share their creativity with the region. Live music of all types draws audiences throughout the city to restaurants and clubs. Carbondale Main Street’s Brown Bag Concert series is a popular free lunch-time diversion each Wednesday in May through September. Concert-goers are encouraged to order lunch from a local restaurant or bring their own to enjoy lunch and great music downtown. The organization’s annual Main Street Pig Out combines a barbecue cook-off and live music into a fabulous time. The summer’s annual Sunset Concert Series brings popular music to the SIUC campus and Turley Park for Thursday evening concerts that draw huge audiences. The events are considered by many to be an essential part of summer in Carbondale. Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s contributions to the cultural offerings of the community cannot be overstated. Guest speakers are frequently hosted by many of the University’s departments. The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute regularly hosts presentations by national and international policymakers and observers. McLeod Theater offers both 22

professional and student-produced plays and musicals. Shryock Auditorium in the center of campus each year hosts a variety of lectures, performances, recitals, concerts and special events. The annual Big Muddy Film Festival showcases a wide variety of independent films from around the world. It is one of the oldest studentrun film festivals in the United States. The University is also home to services, businesses and organizations that assist students and alumni in the sale of the artwork. These groups include Southern Glassworks, the Southern Metalsmith Society, the League of Art and Design and the Graduate Association of Painters and Printmakers. Southern Lights Entertainment is a performance series coordinated by SIUC’s Department of Event Services. The program brings a variety of national entertainers including musicians, comedians, dancers and Broadway performances to Southern Illinois. The SIUC School of Music presents concerts and recitals throughout the year. The school also administers the Southern Illinois Music Festival, a two-week musical extravaganza that celebrates classical music, ballet and jazz throughout the region. SIUC’s Egyptian Suzuki School offers instruction on strings and piano for all ages. Additionally, all Carbondale Elementary School District second graders are provided introductory lessons on the violin. nation by offspring.com and the SchoolMatch education evaluation service. Always among the top downstate high schools in scoring on the Prairie State Achievement Exams, CCHS utilizes talented and caring instructors, community involvement and cooperative arrangements with Southern Illinois University Carbondale and John A. Logan College to maximize classroom effectiveness and student achievement. CCHS students are recognized each year for achievements inside and outside of the classroom in athletics, music and public speaking, and the school’s Scholar Bowl team won the 2009 Illinois State Championship. More than 96 percent of all CCHS students graduate and more than 55 percent attend a four-year college or university, with 41 percent attending a two-year institution. The high school boasts more than 25 different languages spoken by the diverse student body, and through a unique agreement with a regional healthcare provider, an inhouse health center provides services to the entire CCHS family.

Private Education For families desiring a private or parochial education for their students, several options are available. Trinity Christian School is a nondenominational school founded in 1980 offering education for all grades, kindergarten through 12th from a Christian perspective. The school’s purpose is “to support Christian families in educating students for lifelong learning, and for communicating the truth of Christ to a world in need of the Gospel.” Small class sizes and a rigorous college preparation program are features of Trinity Christian School. children in kindergarten through eighth grade. For more than 30 years, Carbondale New School has offered small class sizes which allow children to learn at their own pace. A strong sense of community among faculty, students and parents is a hallmark of the school, which maximizes students’ intellectual, social and emotional growth.

Higher Education JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE Recently recognized by Los Angeles’ Center for Study of Community Colleges as one of the top five community colleges in the nation, John A. Logan College offers dynamic programs for students of all ages and backgrounds. Located just minutes east of Carbondale, JALC offers students traditional two-year programs leading to associate’s degrees or for transfer to other educational institutions. 26

Additionally, the college trains thousands of students annually in transfer and career (vocational/technical) courses. A special focus on retraining and continuing education makes JALC a leader in adult education. The college also offers short-term classes through the Center for Business and Industry, 10-week continuing education programs, and customized training based upon the needs of the area’s businesses and residents. The college serves most of Jackson and Williamson counties as well as parts of three other area counties. More than 6,000 students enroll at John A. Logan College each year and the college traditionally has one of the lowest tuition rates in Illinois — currently less than $70 per credit hour for local students — and more than 90 degree programs. Classes are small, averaging just 18 students each, so instructors are free to spend time with each student. Agreements with a number of universities and four-year colleges makes transferring credits easy, and scholarship programs as well as other forms of financial aid ensures that a quality education is affordable at John A. Logan College.

So, what is a Saluki? A popular t-shirt around Carbondale proclaims that there are 44 tigers, 17 cardinals and three penguins, but only one Saluki, comparing the mascot of Southern Illinois University Carbondale to other universities’ teams. So, what is this unique creature and how did it come to be the symbol of the University? For starters, the Southern Illinois region has been known for decades as “Egypt,” and up to the middle of the 20th century, SIUC’s athletic teams were known by the rather nondescript name “Maroons.” Interest in a new mascot culminated in 1951 when a vote of the student body overwhelmingly selected “Salukis” as the new nickname for the University’s teams. True to the area’s Egyptian heritage, a Saluki is an Egyptian hunting dog. In fact, in Biblical times the dogs were held in such esteem that they were considered the finest animals any family could possess. Known for tremendous speed, endurance and stamina, Salukis are one of the world’s oldest breeds, with records dating back as far as 3600 B.C. Thanks to area dog lovers, Salukis are a familiar site in the area, often joining fans at parades and football games. The very first canine to serve as a mascot for the University, King Tut, is buried on the campus, with a pyramid marking his final resting place. There are plans to move King Tut’s grave to the new football stadium.
