WHO'S OUR NEXT MEDALLIST? We’re beating Australia on the medal table! Will Team South Africa add to their four medals this week?

A

by ROB FLUDE

hugely successful first week of the London Olympics brought Team South Africa four medals - three gold and one silver - starting with Cameron van der Burgh's 100m breaststroke victory, followed by Chad le Clos beating Michael Phelps to win gold in the 200m butterfly on Tuesday, as well as getting his silver medal in Friday's 100m butterfly. The quartet of Matthew Brittain, Lawrence Ndlovu, John Smith and James Thompson won SA's first ever rowing medal, while Oscar Pistorius made history in his Olympic debut. Can Team South Africa haul in more silverware? Here are the athletes to watch... Athletics Sunette Viljoen is a genuine medal contender in the javelin. She’s in the qualifying rounds on Tuesday,

and should she progress, will be in the final on Thursday at 9pm. The 28-year-old has a personal best of 69.35m (sixth best throw of all time) and obtained bronze at last year's world championships in Daegu. After claiming gold at the last two Commonwealth Games she’s hoping for higher honours in this, her third Olympics Interestingly, she also has played 18 matches for the SA ladies' cricket team. On Wednesday, Willem Coertzen lines up in the men's decathlon, starting with the 100m heats at 10.10am, followed by the long jump at 11.10am, shot put at 12.50pm, high jump at 6pm, and 400m at 9.30pm. The event continues on Thursday with the 110m hurdles at 9am, discus at 9.55am or 11.10am (depending on group allocation), pole vault at 12.55pm, javelin at 6.30pm or 7.40pm (depending on group allocation) and 1,500m at 9.20pm.

Our main medal contender on the track is Caster Semenya. The 21-year old looks to have put all the controversy behind her and has been training flat out for the 800m. The heats are on Wednesday at 11.35am, semifinals on Thursday night, and the final on Saturday at 8pm. Her personal best of 1:55:95 (when she won gold in the world championships in 2009) is still some two seconds slower than the world record, which has stood for almost 20 years. The men's 4 x 400m relay team (chosen from Oscar Pistorius, Willie de Beer, Ofentse Magawane, Shaun de Jager, LJ van Zyl and Cornel Fredericks), will take part in the heats on Thursday morning, and hopefully Friday's final at 9.20pm.

bid on Wednesday afternoon. The semifinals and final are on Friday, starting at 3.08pm.

Cycling (BMX) Sifiso Nhlapo is another medal hopeful. The 25-year old from Soweto commences his Olympic

Canoe (sprint) Bridgitte Hartley has impressed with her feats in the K1 500m in the last few years, and will be

Cycling (mountain bike) Burry Stander, a 24-year-old from Port Shepstone, will hope that at 1.30pm on Sunday at Hadleigh Park in Essex, he can turn his 2011 and 2012 Absa Cape Epic wins into Olympic Gold. Stander finished 15th in Beijing. Hockey (men) After two agonisingly close games against Great Britain (2-2) and Pakistan (5-4), the men's hockey team will look to notch their first victory when they take on Argentina at 1.45pm on Tuesday. The Argentines have also not managed a win yet.

confident she can obtain a medal this time, having fallen short in the K2 500m semifinal in Beijing. She takes part in the K1 sprint heats on Tuesday morning. The final is on Thursday at 10.15am. Hartley holds the world record for the fastest time in this discipline. Triathlon Richard Murray competes in Tuesday's triathlon. He is another medal hopeful, having finished second in the Sydney leg of the World Triathlon in April, and first in Hamburg more recently. Men's Marathon In probably one of the most famous Olympic races, SA has three competitors who will look to emulate Josiah Thugwane's win in the 1996 Atlanta Games. Lusapho April, Stephen Mokoka and Coolboy Ngamole will line up on Sunday at 11am and and will come through The Mall just after 1pm.

The players – if indeed they were attempting to Shanghai the match, so to speak – have shamed their countries, says Rob Boffard. Photo by Pascal.

The LOCAL ROB BOFFARD

A difficult day at the badminton

MY own little Olympic story, for what it’s worth. To Wembley Arena to watch the badminton. I know very little about the sport. It involves rackets, a very camp ball with feathers attached, and apparently if you get hit hard enough with it you could lose an eye. Beyond that, it holds the same level of importance for me as the wheat export figures from Indonesia. Still, my girlfriend enjoys it, and out of all the tickets we applied for, that’s what we got. Fine. Off to the badminton. It was baking hot inside the arena. The ranks of television lights hanging from the roof ensured that no shadow dared set foot on the courts. They turned the room into a furnace, with the only relief coming when some official opened the exit doors. Below us, a never-ending parade of doubles, mixed doubles, singles. Badminton, the barman’s preferred sport. Surely some enterprising soul must be mixing a Shuttlecocktail. Judging from the physique of some of the female players, it was probably a virgin drink. Served hot. There were always three games on the go, and following proceedings was a bit like standing upright after the bar closes. At one point, there was a women’s doubles session. Korea and China, two countries who both take the sport rather seriously. And at some point, people began to notice that something was not quite right with their game. The players were serving…and not getting the ball past the net. They would give it a little tap, and it would ricochet off the net and bounce back, gifting the other team a point. Both teams were doing this. And they were doing it every time.

The crowd began to mutter, then grumble, then outright boo. The players ignored them, maintaining their go-slow. I thought it was nerves. Had to be. At one point, the referee actually called the players over, presumably to say something along the lines of, “Get your shit together, people.” But on they went. I forget who won the game – the players were roundly booed when they left the court – but I wrote it off as an anomaly and forgot about it. And then it happened again, with two other teams – this time, China and Taipei. Both came close to disqualification. The structure of badminton tournaments eludes me at the best of times, but as it was explained to the next day, the teams were deliberately playing badly to secure certain slots in the next round – or so they have been charged by the Olympic committee. Good. They deserve everything they get. It was one of the most vomitous, unfortunate pieces of sport I’ve ever seen, the kind of thing that doesn’t so much leave a bad taste as tear your tongue out and jump up and down on it. The players – if indeed they were attempting to Shanghai the match, so to speak – have shamed their countries. In the spirit of Usain Bolt and Jamaica: fire bun dem.

FANIE os oppie jas

FANIE VAN DER MERWE

Oor die vyfringfanfare van 2012. Deel II.

Sonder ophou. Veral wanneer die dames deelneem. As jy verstaan wat ek bedoel. Nou ja, daar was natuurlik die

So, ‘n hartlike gelukwensing aan bogenoemde twee here. Gaan. Vir. Goud.

Pears poached in red wine & Gorgonzola, walnut & endive salad THIS is a great little salad to have under that sleeve. Summer or winter, either way it is absolutely delicious. If you have a bit of celery lying about, don’t be shy and add it in with everything else. Walnuts can always be substituted for pecan nuts if you want to sweeten it up and poached pears can be used so many ways, it is a great skill to learn. I’ve used the pears for a delicious and light starter in this recipe, but as an alternative, you can poach pears whole, reduce the liquid into a thick syrup and serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and you have the start of a classic dessert.

Ingredients:

• 350ml red wine • 2 tbsp sugar • 1 bay leaf • 1 stick thyme • 1 star anise • 1 cinnamon stick • 2 under-ripe pears, peeled, cored and sliced into quarters • 70g walnuts, lightly roasted • 150g gorgonzola • 1 red endive • 1 yellow endive • 1 small handful of rocket • Extra virgin olive oil and balsamic glaze to dress

Pears poached in red wine with Gorgonzola, walnut & endive salad

Method:

• In a small saucepan, over a medium heat, bring to the boil the red wine, sugar, bay leaf, thyme, star anise and cinnamon stick. • Once boiling, turn the heat down to a gentle simmer and add the pears, making sure they are immersed in the poaching liquid. • Gently poach the pears for roughly 15 minutes. • Remove the saucepan from the heat and leave the pears to cool in the liquid. • Cut the walnuts in half, lengthways. • In a large bowl, separate the endive leaves by cutting off the base, discard the first layers and gently separate the rest of the leaves working inwards. • Add the rocket and walnuts to the endive and gently break the gorgonzola into the bowl. • Drizzle with a good quality olive

oil and give it a gentle toss. • Once the pears have completely cooled down, remove from the syrup and pat dry using some paper towel. • To assemble the salad, start to pile the endive salad in the middle of the plate with the poached pears in between each layer. • Drizzle with the olive oil and balsamic glaze and serve immediately. The OPTIMIST KAREN DE VILLIERS

Guilt bypass, but Optimism SA Season at Edinburgh Festival Fringe still on a drip This year’s line-up includes Sandra Prinsloo (left), Mncedisi Shabangu and Peter Mashigo (middle), and Loyiso Gola (right).

Assembly 2012 presents a stellar line-up of performers in the South African Season at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe

by STAFF REPORTER ASSEMBLY 2012 is presenting a South African Season from 2 - 27 August at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. The shows are at various venues across Edinburgh and star such famous faces as Sandra Prinsloo and Loyiso Gola. The line-up is as follows: The Sewing Machine Set on the day 81-year-old Magdaleen (Sandra Prinsloo) is waiting for a buyer to collect her beloved sewing machine, she polishes the machine and recounts her touching life story of motherhood, loss, ageing and letting go, interwoven with snippets of South Africa’s history. Assembly George Square, Three, 2-27 August, 2.40pm Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act A white librarian and a black schoolteacher discover love is easily fractured by apartheid. A compelling love story in which the lovers expose not only their bodies but also their longings for personal and emotional freedom. Assembly Hall, Rainy Hall, 2-27 August, 12.15pm Barely Legal: The 18-Year Old Democracy South African Comedy Award Winner Loyiso Gola and South Africa’s ‘King of Improv’ Dave Levinsohn head to Edinburgh Fringe for the first time to give their unique spin on the postapartheid years, from teething tears through to teenage angst.

Assembly Roxy, Upstairs, 2-27 August, 9.10pm Mies Julie Internationally acclaimed director Yael Farber sets her explosive new adaptation of Strindberg’s classic Miss Julie in the remote, bleak beauty of the Karoo. The struggles of contemporary SA are laid bare, battling power, sexuality, memory, mothers and land. Assembly Hall, Rainy Hall, 2-27 August, 2pm Mother to Mother Set months prior to the celebration of South Africa’s freedom from oppression, Mother to Mother is an imaginary testimonial between two mothers begging for understanding and redemption as it relives the murder of Amy Biehl in Cape Town, 1993. A heart-wrenching tour de force, this powerful story of forgiveness and reconciliation is performed by powerhouse actress Thembi Mtshali-Jones. This unforgettable piece is poignant, moving and uplifting. Assembly George Square, Three, 2-27 August, 4pm Vocal Is Lekka Six of Cape Town’s most talented stars present an a capella-style mash-up of pop classics and traditional folk tunes featuring slick choreography, exceptional harmonies and improvised instruments. Vocal is Lekka create melodic rhythms with not only their voices, but everything at their disposal – teaspoons, tins,

matchboxes, feet and the floor. Assembly George Square, Salon Elegance, 2-27 August, 4pm Woza Albert One of SA’s most celebrated classics, this hilarious satire imagines the second coming of Jesus (Morena) during apartheid. Since it was originally written in 1981, it has come to define the best of anti-apartheid theatre in its vibrancy and humanity. Assembly Hall, Rainy Hall, 2-27 August, 4pm And The Girls In Their Sunday Dresses This hugely entertaining piece stars two of South Africa’s most acclaimed comediennes. Centering on the unlikely friendship between the Lady (a well-educated prostitute played by Hlengiwe Lushaba) and The Woman (a domestic worker played by Lesego Motsepe of Isidingo fame), it takes an honest and unashamedly sincere look at the political reality and consequences of modern day South Africa. WINTER morning in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. About a degree or so warmer than early summer in London. The one thing I had forgotten was the lack of indoor heating. Ended up going to bed with cardigans and socks to avoid the midnight shiver rather than the midnight shuffle. While here, a friend remarked that as far as he was concerned, the English are the world’s greatest Optimists. Especially when it comes to the sniff of summer. Or even sun for that matter. You just have to visit the bastions of family Sunday DIY; Home Base and B&Q, to see the hint of summer manifest itself in Webers, patio furniture and porch heaters. Alas the actual race may be delayed month by month but we will be at the ready, the first cloud parting, the golden ray piercing the grey and off we go, hunting out parks and patches of grass to strip and light up the coals. They are not a patch on South Africans when it comes to positivity. Maybe the Israelis are close but when it comes to chatting (over the braai I guess) about the weather, the landscape and our rainbow nation while the roads crumble, the power dies and blood flows must be the height of Optimism. Like a stowaway on a Kamikaze plane. Seriously, I was at the Waterfront for lunch the other day. My friends are immune to my flinching at the beggars coming up to us. We pass the newsstand: Family murdered and boy of 12 tied up and drowned in boiling water. I feel sick, they order sushi.

I suppose living with the endless horror of such news would incapacitate any citizen to the point of paralysis. Like war, one must go through the sheer awfulness of it. Another headline in the Witness yesterday; ‘Woman held as slave forced to give birth bound by chains. Baby dies.’ You will understand if I am not eating too well at the moment. A friend’s 80-year-old mother was locked in her boot on a Friday afternoon. Found on Monday; alive but having suffered a stroke and barely breathing. Who does something like that and then leaves for a weekend having sentenced someone to a living death? Ek weet nie. Admittedly the guilt began to subside with the hundredth car guard, fiftieth placard and the sight of a mother pushing her toddlers to beg in traffic. Overwhelming poverty tends to cancel out individual need – one just gets to the point where you begin to make excuses or simply do not care. Dehumanising is an excuse. The poor here live like animals in gutters; children die of hunger and cold. The government is not popular but the big cars are everywhere. So the Optimism is on a drip now. There are glimpses of landscape and generosity of spirit that more than lift the spirit. They carry me back to patriotism. Just one such example is the carers looking after my mother. These women leave home at 4am and get back at midnight to care for her. And be her friend. There is no colour or judging here. The drip runs faster when I see the mountains. The beaches of endless sand curling around the peninsula. Cattle shining after the rain. Smoke trails escaping from huts on grassy knolls. The smell of winter. Bredies and biltong. Kindness from strangers. And positive people who do not complain or sound like an advert for South African Tourism but actually get involved. Ultimately those Optimists do more than talk and get down to pick up those who cannot stand by themselves. The headlines tell me of indescribable brutality and no, it’s not just news. It’s happening to someone. Remember that and remain optimistic and begin to make the change. Will keep you posted on the drip situation. www.thesouthafrican.com/people

Rand remains under pressure THREE INSIGHTS INTO: THE South African Rand remained under pressure as the European Central Bank (ECB) disappointed the market by delaying the interventions to lower the borrowing costs for Spain and Italy. The Rand traded at 12.7306 GBP/ZAR on Friday down from the 12.8505 GBP/ZAR on Monday. ECB President Mario Draghi announced on Thursday that the Bond buying intervention is not likely to start before September this year. Both countries will need to send a formal request to the ECB and accept strict conditions and supervision to receive this financial support. Rand Merchant Bank said in a note that “The Rand is likely to remain under pressure until decisive action is taken by the world’s major central banks,”. The focus on Friday turned to the US as they released non-farming payroll and the unemployment rate. 163,000 jobs were added to the US economy, 62,000 above the

forecasted 101,000. The unemployment rate on the other hand increased to 8.3%, 0.1% above the expected rate. The overall positive news out of the US encouraged investors to move into more risky markets. This saw the Rand strengthened to a low of 12.6849 on Friday. “We are seeing a lot of importer demand which was absent for most of last week when we were at higher levels on the Dollar/Rand. There's been talk of oil companies buying, I think those that didn't buy last week because the levels were expensive are quite happy now,” said Ion de Vleeschauwer, dealer at Bidvest Bank. BECOMING THE ‘GO-TO’ PERSON by PAUL HARRISON IN any market or industry a few people make literally all the money. They are the ‘go-to’ guys, the ‘experts’. Once you understand how they position themselves to become the ‘chosen ones’, you can use the same strategies. We asked Daniel Wagner who is known as the ‘Expert Maker’, helping people to become authorities in their markets or industries, for his three best insights. Tip 1: Build a personal online brand Everyone Googles you – but most of us are unprepared! Take charge of your online footprint. People will not do business with you if they can’t find you! It’s your perfect opportunity to present yourself and your business in the right light. It’s not a business website, because after all, people do business with people. Have a clear positioning strategy – say what you stand for and what you stand against. Tip 2: Create a strategic product staircase People want to sell stuff online, but don’t take human psychology into account. You must take people through a strategic set of steps to move them from ‘suspects’ to ‘prospects’ to customers. We focus on making the internet an ‘automated prospect qualifier’ and take much of the higher ticket sales offline. Stick with a simple model that you can tweak and improve. Literally all the

money is in the backend conversion. Tip 3: Cultivate a buying audience Having a powerful brand and a great product staircase won’t make you a dime unless you have a trusted and loyal following. ‘Tribe building’ can be learned and follows rules and formulas. Say no to the wrong kind of client, have a goal greater than yourself, have clear positioning and communicate honestly and frequently using multiple media.

Daniel Wagner

Daniel answers Rob Hargreaves’ questions on becoming a go to person. Rob Hargreaves is originally from Cape Town and now lives in London. Rob runs his own video production and marketing business. With the economy in recession, Rob asked the following questions: What are the elements that go into building the right sort of website to improve my online personal brand? Use WordPress as a platform. Get a personal domain (like RobHargreaves.com) and make sure you add a couple of relevant keywords so people can find you. Include a high quality professional portrait photo and create a ‘strapline’ – which is in essence your ‘promise’. Also include social media follow options (Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter as a minimum and others depending on industry). Lastly a way to collect emails and offer something for free is to give something away to build authority and trust.

One often hears of people claiming you can make, for example, £2, 000 in 7 days. How true is this, and how does the strategic product staircase differ? To make any decent money online you must have a strategic staircase. It is far easier to sell low price products (£20 and below) and then move people to higher value transaction. If you only have a low ticket product like an e-book, then to make any decent money you will need too many transactions, eg if I want to make a million with a £10 product I need to sell 100,000 of them. If I have a strategic three or four step staircase, I can make a million with just a couple of thousand transactions. What’s the best way to increase or cultivate more of a buying audience? Most business owners focus too much on the business aspect of a transaction and too little on the human aspects. People will connect with you better if you share who you really are and include some fallibility. Tribes need leadership and a good mixture of education and entertainment. Create a mission, choose an antagonist and keep sharing the same message – and you will build a following. SA jobs recover slowly, manufacturing hit The eurozone crisis and concerns over an Asian market slowdown have caused job cuts in key South African sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture and finance by STAFF REPORTER THE continuing crisis in the eurozone and concerns over a slowdown in Asian markets is casting a pall over the South African economy, with job creation slow and key sectors suffering, according to the latest quarterly labour force survey from Statistics South Africa. The unemployment rate improved slightly, falling from 25.2 percent in the first quarter to 24.9 percent in the second quarter.

472,000 jobs have been created since the market’s lowest point in the third quarter of 2010. However, the trade-related sector shed 91,000 jobs, while the manufacturing sector and agriculture sector dropped 44,000 jobs and 18,000 jobs, respectively. In finance, 4,000 roles were cut. Western Cape and Gauteng provinces were the hardest hit, shedding 32,000 and 15,000 jobs, respectively. The drop in manufacturing roles

is particularly concerning, as it follows on from a 67,000 fall in the first quarter, showing the extent of the damage caused by the external environment to one of the country’s most productive sectors. The World Bank and the Reserve Bank have both cut their forecasts for South Africa’s economic growth in 2012, and the former raised serious concerns over the danger to the country’s economic stability caused by the levels of inequality and unemployment in

society. South Africa is an “outlier” in terms of the levels of inequality in employment opportunities between segments of society defined by age, race and class, the World Bank said. “Our results show that a South African child not only has to work harder to overcome the disadvantages at birth due to circumstances, but having done so, finds that these reemerge when

seeking employment as an adult,” said Sandeep Mahajan, World Bank Task Team Leader for the South Africa Economic Update series in a statement accompanying the report’s release last week. “Moreover, the disadvantages do not stop with that one person - they get transmitted across generations. The policy challenge is to find a way to break this vicious, selfperpetuating cycle of inequality in South Africa.”

African textile exporters get US trade boost

by STAFF REPORTER AFRICAN clothing manufacturers have received a boost after the US Senate Finance Committee voted to renew a key piece of trade legislation that has created thousands of jobs in the textile industry on the continent. The provision in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which exempts African exporters from import duties on goods shipped to the US, allowed companies on the continent to use fabric made in other countries

and still benefit from the act. This provision was due to expire in September, and had been criticised for giving trade benefits by the back door to Chinese and other Asian manufacturers. However, the Finance Committee acknowledged that the act contributed significantly to the creation of productive jobs in Africa, and that the uncertainty over whether or not it would be extended was having a severe impact. Clothing chains typically order months in advance, and

manufacturers in Lesotho and Swaziland had been laying off workers in anticipation of a fall in demand, compounding problems created by the economic downturn in their chief export markets. According to the Trade Law Centre, an NGO, as many as 15 of Lesotho’s 40 textile factories were facing closure, while two-thirds of Swaziland’s textile workers have been laid off since the industry’s peak in 2004. Producers had hoped that the provision would be extended before an AGOA conference in June, but the bill has been slow to make its passage through the House and Congress. Ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, Orrin Hatch, said on Wednesday: “This is a common-sense measure that will foster prosperity through strengthened trade relations and provide real opportunities for job creation and economic growth both at home and abroad.” AGOA, signed into law in 2000, has been one of the US’ principle trade development vehicles for Africa. According to research by the Brookings Institute, it is responsible for the creation of around 300,000 jobs on the continent, many in productive sectors, such as manufacturing. Congress is yet to pass the bill, but it is understood to have strong bipartisan support.

Bologna combines medieval charm, magnificent views and a wonderful energy. Photo by Luca Volpi (above).

Bologna: An Italian love affair

The fabulous Emilia-Romagna region of Italy is a short flight from London and has everything for the perfect weekend break by SANDY CADIZ-SMITH THE medieval city of Bologna has real energy, it’s positively bursting with it. Maybe it’s because it’s home to the oldest university in Europe (and buzzing with students) or because it’s surrounded by fertile lands that offer a wealth of mouth watering ingredients to sample in a cornucopia of different restaurants. Actually, it’s both and more, with plenty to explore. Bologna’s a red city (rossa) dominated by grand red porticos and styles of architecture in different rosy shades. The precariously leaning towers of Le Due Torri are the symbol of the city and make you feel quite dizzy as you stare upwards into the blue sky. Just down the road, towering over the biggest piazza in town, the grand Piazza Maggiore, is the Basilica di San Petronio, the fifth biggest church in the world. The streets leading off this magnificent square radiate an amazing energy, with crowds spilling out onto the pavement to relax with a glass of prosecco or refreshing beer. And there’s a stunning food market set in the narrow old streets nearby. Total

foodie heaven, and the perfect place to stop for a coffee or two and inhale the scent of ham and cheese, seriously it’s in the air. You can also stock up on the local balsamic vinegar (from nearby Modena) and various stuffed pastas which are also a speciality of the region. Also leading off the square you’ll find shops selling something to satisfy everyone, including shoes, clothes, bags, cosmetics and jewellery. It’s like there aren’t enough hours in the day to fit it all in. And as if that’s not enough to enjoy, there are two nearby towns which simply have to be visited. Modena is only 20 minutes away by train. The trains are a wonderful way to travel; frequent, generally on schedule and a really great value. Modena is home to Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati (the new Ferrari museum is worth a visit for petrolheads), so not lacking in style and speed and it’s the birthplace of Pavarotti. It’s also home to the three Michelin starred Osteria Francescana, voted the fifth best restaurant in the world for 2012. An absolutely

extraordinary experience, the restaurant makes Modena worth a visit on its own. A slightly longer train journey away, Parma seems to work at a slower pace. It’s more laid back with wider streets, beautiful gardens and the inspiring dusky pink church, the Baptistery of Parma. And don’t forget two of the ultimate foodie treats, Prosciutto di Parma (Parma Ham) and Parmigiano Reggiano (Parmesan cheese). Once you’ve tried them in their home town the flavour will stay with you forever. More great eating and shopping opportunities to be savoured. This Emilia-Romanga region is now my favourite part of Italy and I really feel like I haven’t seen enough of it yet. You’re so spoilt for choice for places to see, things to do and the tastiest dishes to eat. The people are friendly and the weather spectacular (such a relief in this dreadful English summer). And there’s even a stunning beach at Rimini that’s only an hour and a half’s journey away. Need I say more? It’s simply heavenly. When the sun comes up, you better be running The African Women in Business conference featured inspiring talks by Baroness Oona King, Viola Ncube and Carol Nyazika

by STAFF REPORTER FOLLOWING the success of the inaugural African Women in Business Conference in 2011, the Association for African Owned Enterprises (AAOE UK) again hosted the UK’s only African Women in Business Conference at the School of Oriental & African Studies on 13 July 2012. AAOE UK is a non-profit organisation that serves as a representative for businesses owned, directed or serving the African corporate community and professionals in the UK. AAOE UK chairman Washington Kapapiro said the aim of the conference was “to encourage women who have achieved success and hold senior leadership positions to be confident in these positions and use them as platforms to wield their influence as women rather than take up these positions as "token" leaders in place just to fulfill gender equality policies.” After informal networking and lunch, the conference kicked off with TV broadcaster and columnist Savahna Nightingale introducing Baroness Oona King MP, Labour politician and former Chief Diversity Officer of Channel 4, who commenced her speech with an Ethiopian fable attributed to

Abe Gubegna: “Every day in Africa a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better be running.” Baroness Oona recounted her experiences as a woman and a mother of three working in the House of Commons, as well as her time spent in Rwanda. She concluded by relating the fable to women in business - “If you are a black woman in business and you have children you better learn to run faster than the fastest lion!” Equally inspiring talks came from Elsie Owusu OBE who made everyone recognise the ‘African Auntie’ in themselves. Nyasha Gwatidzo, founder of Banya & Vana Trust, gave delegates her favourite tips on how to succeed in business. Carol Nyazika, a personal branding specialist, Justina Mutale, the Founder and CEO of Positive Runway, and Viola Ncube, founder of iRock, also shared their stories and advice on how to get ahead. celebrity make-up artist Eryca Freemantle closed the conference with her immensely moving story

and tribute to her mother. Mutale commented afterwards, “It was a pleasure hearing all those

phenomenal and inspirational women speak. Thanks for giving me the stage to share my story.”

Sam congratulates Le Clos on his second Olympic medal

Chad Le Clos earned Team South Africa their fourth medal only one week into the games

by STAFF REPORTER SASCOC President Gideon Sam on Friday celebrated swim sensation Chad le Clos’ second medal of the Olympic Games in London. Team South Africa won their fourth medal of the Games as young Le Clos took silver in the 100-metre butterfly final, narrowly edged out by Olympic legend Michael Phelps. On Tuesday Durban’s Le Clos had beaten Phelps in the final of the 200m butterfly final. “This is absolutely fantastic,” enthused Sam. “Three golds and a silver and we’re only a week into the competition. Young Chad has been an absolute inspiration to South Africans both young and old this week. “I’m sure that his efforts in the pool are not only going to inspire the rest of Team South Africa here in London but also a whole future generation of South African

sportsmen and women. “And I’m also extremely pleased with our rowers. I know we had a lot of expectations from that code but I see we were quite justified because look how these four young guys have rocked the rowing world.” South Africa’s first medal at these London Games came from Cameron van der Burgh who took gold in the mens’ 100m breaststroke on Sunday and on Thursday the men’s lightweight four rowing combination also won gold. The last time South Africa got three gold medals was in Atlanta, when Penny Heyns took the double breaststroke titles and Josiah Thugwane got gold in the men’s marathon. “Let’s hope this run of medals continues for the entire duration of these magnificent Games,” concluded Sam. - Road to London

‘BIFF’ MAKES HISTORY Graeme Smith collects 93rd cap as Test captain, becomes world’s mostcapped test match skipper

G

by WESLEY MCKAY

RAEME Smith collected his 101st test match cap and 93rd as Test captain, to draw level with Alan Border’s record as the world’s most-capped test match captain. He led the Proteas out at Headingley in the second Investec test, 1–0 up in the series and hoping to leapfrog England into the position of topranked test team in the world. It seems just yesterday that Smith was awarded – somewhat controversially – the monumental task of captaining his country when the Proteas toured England back in 2003. The rookie captain, 22 years old at the time and having only played seven test matches, scored back-to-back double centuries, announcing himself to the world and confounding critics who said he was too young. Smith has enjoyed somewhat consistent success since those epic double tons and although his start was exceptional, he will be first to admit his decade-long tenure as the Proteas’ talismanic leader has been bumpy to say the least. His first few years were somewhat acrimonious in terms of his relationship with the press. Smith seemed cocky to the point that, although people knew he was a talent, they started to wonder who this kid thought he was. Smith will also lament his inability to win a major international tournament. The ‘choker’ tag will be something Smith must live with forever, having never even made a World Cup final.

PROUD MOMENT: Oscar Pistorius of South Africa, who made history on Sunday by becoming the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics, exchanges bibs with Kirani James of Grenada after they competed in the men’s 400m semifinal at the Olympic Stadium. Pistorius finished in 46.54 but did not make the final.

Those negatives apart, Smith and co still have time to liberate themselves of that chokers tag. ‘Biff’ (as he is nicknamed) will be disappointed with their World Cup performances, but not even that can take away from what has been a spectacular career for the KES old boy. His 10 years in charge have seen him score over 8,000 test runs, becoming SA’s second most successful batsman in terms of runs accumulated and by far our most successful captain. Smith also captained SA in what has been dubbed ‘The Greatest One-Day International of all time’, when the Proteas chased down 434 runs in 50 overs to overhaul the Aussies at the Wanderers in March 2006.

He’s come a long way since those early days. He is far more assured of himself as a person and as a leader, and he’s also far less abrasive with the media to the point that press conferences have become insightful and thoughtprovoking, a nice change from the dominant PR-produced drivel. And if there are any doubters of Smith’s status as a ‘Great’ still left, they should just listen to some of the English commentators and pundits on television this summer, gushing over his exploit.. Even Nasser Hussain described him as ‘A Leader of Men.’ We all look forward to Smith breaking Border’s record next week, fittingly at the home of cricket, Lord’s.
