South Africa’s Olympic team gets a warm welcome at Heathrow airport on Friday, eager to meet their target of bringing home at least 12 medals this year.

WELCOME TEAM SA! Team South Africa has arrived in London ready to bring home the gold

by HEATHER WALKER

N

ow that South Africa’s Olympic athletes and officials have arrived in London, the excitement is growing for what is hoped will be SA’s most successful Olympics yet. The team arrived at Heathrow Airport on Friday morning after departing from Johannesburg on a specially decorated SAA plane. They received a warm welcome to London from their friends, supporters and SAA staff, who were there to greet them on arrival.

And it looks like they have even brought us some South African sunshine! While Team SA have settled into their new accommodation in the Olympic Village, five top South African officials will be staying in a 5 star hotel near Embankment, while a further 15 officials are in 4 star rooms at a hotel in Charing Cross. Meanwhile, most of the athletics team are hard at work at their training camp at St Mary’s College in Twickenham. Champion hurdler and medal

hopeful LJ Van Zyl tweeted, “Very good set-up here at St Marys. Saw Caster [Semenya] and [her coach] Maria [Mutola] here.” Semenya has been chosen to lead Team SA in the opening ceremony pageant on Friday 27 July as South Africa’s official flagbearer for London 2012. “It’s such a privilege for me to do such a big thing like that. To carry the flag for the team, it’s such a big thing,” said Semenya, who is only the second female flagbearer for both the Olympics and the

Paralympics after Natalie du Toit, who was awarded the honour in Beijing 2008. Race walker Marc Mundell tweeted, “Super exciting times. Proudly South African. What a fantastic send off at ORTIA. Ke Nako.” The team has been set the goal of 12 medals, in compensation for the poor show in Beijing. Speaking at a Presidential send-off in Pretoria, Jacob Zuma said the government supported the medal target and offered the country’s support. He

declared, “Team South Africa, now is your turn to take this nation to even greater heights. “Going to London you must do better than in Beijing. We will be behind you as a nation, waving our beautiful rainbow flag at every available moment.” Our women’s football team, Banyana Banyana, kick off the first event on Wednesday, two days ahead of the opening ceremony. See p3 for events at Ekhaya, p18 for a list of South African Olympic events to watch this week.

The book is in fact a a copy of The Complete Works of Shakespeare that former Robben Island prisoner Sonny Venkatrathnam kept in his cell. Venkatrathnam disguised its cover with Diwali cards to prevent its seizure by prison authorities. He eventually passed it to 33 of his friends and fellow South African political prisoners, asking them to sign a passage that meant a lot to them. Home Affairs shadow minister calls for immigration crackdown The South African Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs is examining ways of implementing similar measures to those proposed in the UK in order to be more selective of those they allow into the country by ROB BOFFARD

A senior Democratic Alliance official has called for tougher immigration laws in South Africa. Manny De Freitas, the Shadow Minister of Home Affairs, has said that the department needs to be far more selective with who it allows into the country. In an interview with The South African, De Freitas said, “South Africa… is a big magnet in Africa, attracting people from all over, and you’ve got to be selective. You’ve got to be a sieve. You can’t accept every Tom, Dick and Harry – which frankly, is what South Africa has been doing. You need to put in certain measures to say, we need to to sift you out. South Africa has been accepting everybody and that’s part of the problem.” De Freitas said that the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, of which he is a member, is examining ways of implementing similar measures to those proposed in the UK. However, he stopped short of saying that South Africa would implement the income controls being debated in the country. UK Immigration Minister Damian Green has proposed a controversial minimum salary requirement for immigrants.

Manny De Freitas, the Shadow Minister of Home Affairs.

De Freitas’ comments come in the wake of last month’s riots at Johannesburg’s Lindela Repatriation Centre. The centre houses illegal aliens before they are deported, and has been the subject of three reports on inhumane conditions by the Human Rights Commission. The department has also been criticised for allowing several thousand identity numbers to be duplicated. “Part of the xenophobic problem we have is the Home Affairs officials themselves,” De Freitas said. “You have officials who are not properly trained and cadre deployment thanks to the ANC

where people are put there who do not understand what they’re doing.” He did however commend Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for her work in tightening up a notoriously corrupt and inefficient department.“The Minister has done amazingly… she’s made great strides and that there have been dramatic improvements in that department.” Last week, Dlamini-Zuma told a South African Broadcasting Corporation business briefing that she wanted to tighten up immigration laws. www.thesouthafrican.com/new

The LOCAL ROB BOFFARD

Howzit China! MY girlfriend and I once contemplated a move to Hong Kong. We’d been there on holiday and it blew us away with its energy, its beauty and its absolutely insane outlook on life. It was, we concluded, a place we could seriously deal with living in – and besides, wouldn’t it be good to live and work right next to China, one of the world’s most powerful emerging economies? We haven’t moved for two reasons. One is that we couldn’t quite take paying the equivalent of £3,000-a-month rent for a £1,000-a-month-sized flat. Two is Cantonese. I mean no disrespect to this fine language, or its mainland cousin, Mandarin. But what we learnt very quickly was that if you weren’t speaking Cantonese at age three, forget it. You just ain’t gonna learn it. It is one of the most confusing languages ever invented, as if someone actually sat down to design a cryptic crossword and accidentally ended up inventing a language. I can see them now, pencil stub behind ear, tongue sticking out of the side of the mouth, contemplating just how labyrinthine they can make compound verbs. So Hong Kong is out. As is mainland China, which – although I have never visited – I have about as much hope of making a go at as I do of landing on the moon stark

naked. This is despite the fact that China and its allies are going to dominate the next 100 years. If you disagree, or think that the West has a fighting chance, you’re an idiot. And the one smart thing China has done is gets its hands dirty in Africa. They’re ahead of the curve when it comes to recognising not only where the coming thing lies, but where the world’s resources will be. Where the oil, gold, minerals and people will be. They want in, and they want in badly. On the face of it, this isn’t a bad thing – after all, any foreign investment can only be welcomed, right? Problem is, no matter how you look at it, the Chinese government is deeply, deeply nasty. They regularly crack down on free media, punish people who speak out against them, refuse to tolerate any dissidence and generally behave as if they’re the biggest bully on the playground. Other countries are just as nasty, particularly in the West, but at least these countries have a nominally free press and a vaguely democratic process. China doesn’t care. China just hates everybody who doesn’t agree with them, and don’t care who knows it. So it’s a little worrying when Jacob Zuma is spotted zipping off to Beijing to meet with Chinese leaders. There is much talk of “comprehensive frameworks” and “bilateral cooperation”. Will it benefit South Africa? Unquestionably. Should the countries be talking to each other? Sure. Will Zuma ever question or even raise the topic of his hosts’ colossal human rights abuse record? How do you say “fat chance” in Cantonese?

Rodriguez: Bigger than Elvis

The documentary ‘Searching for Sugarman’, which is released in the UK this week, is as much the story of elusive singer Rodriguez as it is of a particular time in South Africa’s history by COLIN MACRAE RODRIGUEZ’S life story, massive in South Africa but practically unheard of in the rest of the known universe, was just begging to be told. His music was a fixture in the life of every South African of a particular background for nearly 30 years. Your first bunking off school, your first sexual tryst, your first joint, were likely to be soundtracked by the “deep” musings of this lyrical poet. Yet who was he? How come you could not read about him? Other musos of the time were written about, were still releasing records and throwing TVs out of hotel windows (thankfully this was the generation where they were not making reality TV shows and adopting third world children). Of course there were rumours, the on stage suicide, the de rigueur OD à la Hendrix and Morrison, of which he was held in the same esteem. But they were just that, rumours. That is until two fans, music lover Stephen Segerman and journalist Craig Bartholomew, decided to take the rumours one step further. Stephen and Craig’s quest to answer those questions is documented by Malik Bendjelloul in Searching for Sugarman, the movie chosen to launch the first ever Secret Screening event in London, is as much their story as it is of a particular time in South Africa, and of Rodriguez himself. If you excuse the woeful attempts of a very English MC to pretend he was in Bellville, the event promises much for future Secret Screening events. The venue, a superb Art Deco throwback from times gone by, is sumptuous enough to mingle in, and was decked out appropriately in South African and American flags. Popcorn, hot dogs, a bar and the second hand record sellers subtly suggested the content of the screening. The MC and a quaint short on the death of vinyl out of the way,

the movie began. I am biased here; any movie that has as its opening sequence the spectacular drive around Chapman’s Peak to the soundtrack of Cold Fact and I am hooked. I have driven the very same road listening to the same album and goosebumps did not describe how I was feeling here in the East End of London. The wonderful South African light so beloved by TV commercial directors worldwide, contrasting with the grey London skies outside only served to accentuate the dislocated feeling. I was so engrossed that it took me a while to wonder how the largely English crowd, predominantly of the hipster variety, would take to this obscure subject matter. Credit to the filmmaker who deftly balanced the factual and the human strands. With more than a few comic elements he managed to weave a universal human story that in truth only really matters to a specific type of South African, and one American family. Space precludes me (Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, are you listening) to go into much detail, but here is a summary. Beginning with a deft introspective soliloquy by protagonist Stephen Segerman that places Rodriguez’s music in the consciousness of the South African youth of the day, the film then seeks to understand the hard inner city life Rodriguez wrote about. Then back to SA, where, as the best quote of the movie explains, “TV was communist” as our self-appointed detectives “follow the money” of a star who was in SA at the time more loved than the Rolling Stones, cooler than the Beatles and bigger than Elvis. Eventually they find Rodriguez and return him to SA for a hero’s welcome like the long lost prodigal son. The film is so cleverly played out that anyone in the audience would agree it is America’s loss and they quite simply

don’t deserve him. If Disney had scripted this you would have said it was trite, but it’s true and as the standing ovation and warm smiles throughout confirmed, this could be the only feel-good movie ever made about such depressingly opposing subject matter as SA under apartheid and inner city American squalor. Yet there was more to come. As the credits rolled, the unmistakeable bass tone ‘da da da dom’ rung out across the auditorium, a silhouette appeared backstage and the man himself,

looking pretty nimble for a 70-year-old strutted out to sing ‘I Wonder’… and the crowd erupted. Well wonder no more! Rodriguez lives and his music will live forever. Searching for Sugar Man will be released on 26 July at the following cinemas: London: • Fulham Road Cineworld • Haymarket Cineworld • Soho Curzon • Wimbledon Curzon • Hampstead Everyman • Maida Vale Everyman • Notting Hill Gate • Covent Garden Odeon • Greenwich Picturehouse • Brixton Ritzy • Baker Street Screen • Islington Vue

Trenton & Free Radical head back toLondon SA chef cooks an African feast at Olympic supper fest

by STAFF REPORTER CAPE Town-based band Trenton and Free Radical will be bringing their reggae-infused Afro-beats on tour to the UK this month. Trenton and Free Radical is a partnership between Trenton Birch and and Ibiza-raised writing collaborator Marco Wielander. With his feet firmly planted in African soil, Birch has a global musical sensibility. Having done his time in London developing the distinct sound and lyrics of his band, he recently returned to Cape Town. Having featured Maxi Jazz on their latest single, they deliver honest beats - although there are diverse influences, including hip-hop and electro, the result is sufficiently distinctive and edgy to evoke a sense of being unique, avoiding tired genre labels. Theirs is a contemporary African sound with universal appeal, and the muscle to unite divergent tastes. It’s revolutionary music geared to ignite dance-floors while exploding our thinking. They’re not radical in a purely political

by STAFF REPORTER SOUTH African born Arno Maasdorp, owner of the Saltoun Supper Club, will be one of the guest chefs at London’s Global Feast, a three-week gastronomic experience within ‘Worldscape’ – a huge art installation seating 80 diners in a 3D model of the world. Global Feast 2012 is a grassroots antidote to the Olympics, created by a group of creative Londoners who like to eat and meet. Drawing on the underground supper club scene that has flourished in recent years, with passionate cooks inviting strangers into their homes, Kerstin Rodgers (MsMarmiteLover) has invited some of London’s best chefs to put together a delicious programme of menus, featuring a different world cuisine each night, for 20 consecutive nights during the Olympics – 25 July to 14 August. The extravaganza begins with West Africa on the first day of the Olympics, moving eastwards to end in Brazil – a symbolic handover to the 2016 Games. Each night new guest chefs from the best London Supper Clubs and restaurants will prepare a four-

course meal, drawing on their own food heritage. Arno Maasdorp will be cooking Central African cusine on 29 July. Arno puts his 20 years of restaurant and food experience to good use offering guests delectable delights every week at his luxurious home in Brixton. His food is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach The feasts will take place at Stratford Town Hall just minutes from the Olympic Stadium in a heated covered courtyard, and featuring an exhibition of atmospheric photographs by Nadege Meriau. The Worldscape installation – 15m long, 6m wide, more than 2m tall – doubles as both table and seating for 80 guests who congregate around its continents, dining off its coastlines. Each evening will also be interspersed with entertainment: musicians, performers and artists reflecting the culture of the feast. Tickets cost £55 per person (£65 on weekends/£100 for the Opening Ceremony evening). For more information, menus, calendar and to purchase tickets visit www.globalfeast2012.com

Hope in the form of French ladies

IF you are, like me, always reaching for the ‘new’ skincare, the right diet, the attempt at losing those enemy pounds that have infested the hips, life becomes one tedious session of trying to do it right. And hoping we will age fit and sexy. I say this as I try to pull the stomach in, slap on the face mask and drink a toxic mix of detox gunk when wine would be a much better option. Last week however, I found myself on the Cote D’Azure in a village called Ville Franche

think they exist on Gauloises and fumes of espresso. And secretly ingested tapeworms. Clad in the most Cezanne of colours, cerise kaftans or tiny shorts, these gorgeous feline fatales care not one iota for standards set for their age by the rest of the world. One such example was a 70-something-year-old, pulling up on her Harley with her poodle in the rear basket. Off she gets, nut brown, wearing the tallest platforms and denim shorts and picks up ‘Chiffon’ with total attitude before she swaggers down the road to the nearest boutique. Frumpy here was sitting at the bus stop ogling a pensioner in Maria Callas sunglasses and shocking pink outfit. I was in love. I have no doubt she has lived the life. By all rights half these women should have died from sun cancer, lung cancer and many other diseases including the worst diet in the world. Fat in France is for the Provencal mothers – eating for these ‘power on pins’ is a swearword. Living life to the full is their mantra. Going gently into

Weermagsoldate vermom as sekuriteitswagte?

Londen 2012 gaan ‘n luisterryke geleentheid wees wat dalk net die great in Great Britain gaan terugsit. Komaan julle, almal saam, hier gaat ons nou: flie-hie (flie-hie)... flie-flaai (flie-flaai)...flie-flaaiflou (flie-flaai-flou)...a-wiesda (a-wiesda)...

the good night is not an option. Instead they seem to stick a finger to age and norms. These women are mistresses of painters, sailors, gamblers and fortune hunters. They are mothers, wives and more importantly, exactly what they want to be. Growing old is tough. Accepting it is even harder. So Madame, I sit on the beach and at the pavement cafes staring at you. When you walk by, sit chatting loudly and

drinking wine at the next table or tan topless on the beach, I think you are awesome. You may be old, but your spirit is young as a playful kitten. Formidable sex symbols all of you. No bucket list for you, you have lived and will die with a cigarette between your lips, a good red wine in your hand; with your puppy, a young lover and the sun on your face. Boots anti-ageing cream will never do the same for me.

Sur Mer with the most idyllic and almost illegally beautiful scenery. Not just the buildings and sea view, but that indefatigable icon – the Frenchwoman. This woman – ‘I love myself’ does it with such flair I was mesmerised. The young ones exude sex appeal without trying. They are just naturally beautiful, lanky, stylish, tanned and full of ‘joie de vivre’. As I pulled the sarong closer to my Rubenesque form, my fruitless attempt to dissolve into the beach pebbles only amplified how out of place I was. But, despite the appeal of youth, it was the ‘elderly’ French woman that really got the heartbeat going. Now this is a category of woman I aspire to and pay homage to as the years slide downward. Poetry in motion. There they are, thin as silhouettes, strips of brown leather with wrinkles and experience stamped on their foreheads. Hair down to their shoulders, bleached and plaited like waiflike amazons, these women exude the most profound kick-ass attitude I have yet to find on the muddy island. I

by WALTER JONES AS Peter Hain put it in his opening address at the book launch of London Recruits: The Secret War Against Apartheid on 11 July: “Never before have so many subversives been gathered in a single room in the House of Commons.” The London Recruits were mainly students recruited by Ronnie Kasrils in the late ’60s and ’70s. Asked to travel to South Africa at a time when the apartheid regime had practically dismembered the underground, these brave young people became a lifeline to the liberation struggle. Many of them were members of the Communist Party but because they were white and British they remained, for the most part, above the suspicion of the South African security forces. Many of the recruits worked in separate cells, often unwittingly alongside colleagues and close friends, so there were jokes about the ‘secret alliance’ between the Trotskyites and the Stalinists. These cells distributed ANC literature around South Africa, using devices such as the

‘Exploding Bucket’ or leaflet bomb and many of the leaflets were smuggled into South Africa in false bottom suitcases. In 2005, Ken Keable, the editor of the book, decided to start looking up fellow recruits and asking them to recount their stories. It took almost seven years to collect what is now a fascinating and very personal account of their brave exploits. And there are still stories emerging – a website is planned to publish the ongoing release of these. Many, however, were reluctant to share their experiences. Some still are. Katherine Levine, who worked as a recruit both here in the UK and in South Africa, puts this reluctance down to the fact that when you are asked to do something so important, and never to tell anyone about it, you bury the experience so deep that it becomes very difficult to dig up. Mary Chamberlain, one of the London Recruits who shares her story in the book, said she had only discovered weeks before the launch that the woman sitting next to her – a close friend and colleague of many years – was

involved in the operations. Tom Bell, another of the London Recruits whose story is recounted in the book, brought one of the false bottom suitcases with him. He plans to donate it to the Museum of Labour in Manchester. Another of the suitcases is already on show at the Lilliesleaf Farm Museum in Rivonia. Dr Zola Skweyiya, our High Commissioner in the UK, ended the evening by thanking everyone involved, on behalf of all South Africans. With the dark days of apartheid behind us, South Africans have much to be grateful for, not least the help and heroism of the London Recruits. But there is still much to do, both in South Africa and in many other places around the world. Many stories are recounted and tributes paid in the book, but the message is clear: The most effective way of fighting injustice around the world is through the international solidarity of like-minded people. Let this book be your inspiration if not your guide. London Recruits is available on www.merlinpress.co.uk

How to do business in Africa While commodities such as oil and gas are still doing big business in Africa, there is a quiet revolution being led by the fast growing design and technology sector – the ‘new gold’ that, with the availability of cheap smart phones supplied by the Chinese, is fast becoming Africa’s hottest commodity by WALTER JONES AS Africa takes centre stage at the Festival of the World in London this summer, many questions are being asked about what it means to be African and the role Africa

plays in the world of the arts, culture and business. In a talk hosted by UK Trade and Investment at the Southbank Centre on 21 July, a single question emerged: What does

Africa need? Rosalind Kainyah of Tullow Oil, one of the panellists, believes there is still a great need for skills and knowledge transfer and that this should be part of

SA repo rate cut to benefit SMEs

by STAFF REPORTER THE South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the Reserve Bank Monetary Policy Committee's decision to slash the repo rate by 50 basis points down to 5%. Nedbankwill Golfgo Challenge print "This decision a long way towards alleviating cost pressures on households and businesses (SMEs in particular) although the measure in and of itself is unlikely to have a significant impact on improving economic activity," the SA Chamber of Commerce said. Last week’s announcement by Governor Gill Marcus was a welcome indication that long-term inflation is expected to moderate. The Monetary Policy Committee had kept the repo rate at 5.5% for the last nine meetings so most

economists had expected it to keep the repo rate unchanged. The decision means the prime rate will now decline to 8.5%. "While it is recognised that such a move on its own will not overcome the challenges facing the economy, ad(Page 1 that 9/7/12 it is felt it can12:38:51 help alleviate some of the pressures faced by some sectors," Marcus said following the committee's fourth meeting this year. The committee had looked at a range of issues such as the inflation figures, the global economy outlook and the Rand/Dollar exchange rate when they met this week. Nedbank economists said the decision was unexpected but not unreasonable. "It was unexpected but not unreasonable given the rapid

deterioration in the global economy in recent weeks. We had put the chances of a cut at 40%. What happens next depends on whether the combined global monetary stimulus sparks some recovery later in the year (in which case rates will remain stable) or whether the global economy slips into recession (expect further easing)," said Nedbank. Nedbank, however, added that rates will remain stable well into 2013. The Reserve Bank revised its economic forecast for 2012 and 2013 slightly downwards. Gross Domestic Product is now projected to moderate to 2.7% from a previous 2.9% before it picks up to 3.8% from a previous 3.9% in 2013.

the negotiated terms of any trade agreement – ensuring that all of the people in the country where these agreements are made, will benefit from them. The ‘free money’ given to African countries by aid and development agencies could be put to better use, supporting projects driven by partnerships between NGOs and the private sector. This, she believes, would support a wider strategy for sustainability. Abhay Ketkar of Standard Chartered Bank believes that infrastructure is important for the flow of capital into African countries – particularly ports, where the majority of imports and exports are processed. While commodities such as oil and gas are still doing big business in Africa, there is something else going on: a quiet revolution being led by the fast growing design and technology sector – the ‘new gold’ that, with the availability of cheap smart phones supplied by the Chinese, is fast becoming Africa’s hottest commodity. This is a revolution that many are calling the ‘The African Spring’ or the rise of ‘The Afropreneur’. More than 45 tech hubs now exist across the continent, with developers as far afield as Madagascar writing apps for mobile phones. Supporting these developers, showcasing their innovation and connecting them to

the wider world, are organisations such as Appfrica International, which runs the annual Apps4Africa competition that rewards developers with cash and work opportunities, and Hive Colab, which mentors and incubates software entrepreneurs. Where infrastructure such as roads and ports still present a challenge in many African countries, technology, it seems, is bypassing these and presenting alternative ways of communicating and doing good business. Take M-Pesa for example, a mobile money transfer system in Kenya that has been so successful it now has over 17 million registered accounts, and is the most developed mobile payment and micro-financing system in the developing world. The early adoption of 4G in countries such as Angola - before most of Europe and only 10 years after the end of the civil war - is an example of how quickly these 'technoconomies' can grow. Everywhere in cities such as Accra, Lagos, Nairobi and Johannesburg, technology is presenting a new way of doing business in Africa. Being an entrepreneur in Africa presents many challenges, not least lack of state support. But with smart use of technology and connecting with fellow Africans and the world, via social media, these will be overcome.

Further repo rate cuts predicted THE Rand began trading last Monday around the 12.87 mark against its British counterpart and 10.12 to the Euro. The Rand closed significantly stronger on Friday 20 July at 12.86 to the British Pound and 10.04 to the Euro. In an unexpected turn, last week the South African Reserve Bank decided to cut the official interest rate (repo rate) by 50 basis points to 5%. This decision was made to counteract negative investor sentiment and to curb worries of contagion from our European partners. This decision by SARB was further fueled by a slowdown in domestic performance amongst South African companies. This is the first rate cut that we have seen implemented by the bank over the past 10 meetings.

As South African bond yields hover around record lows, some analysts are predicting a further rate cut later this year. "The market at the moment is pricing in a 40% chance that we'll see another cut in September and a 50 percent chance that we'll see one thereafter if we don't have one in September," said Sijadu Mzozoyana, a trader at Investec. "The search for yield is so difficult these days that the Rand is actually not doing too badly. Although our yields are slowly diminishing, they're not at zero as is the case in many developed

countries," said Bidvest Bank's Ion de Vleeschauwer. GBP/ZAR: 12.95 EUR/ZAR: 10.06 USD/ZAR: 8.324 AUD/ZAR: 8.575 Exchange rates as of 8.17am, Monday 23 July. Compiled by Paul Gerber

THREE INSIGHTS INTO: RAPID BUSINESS EXPANSION

by PAUL HARRISON WE sat down with Simon K Williams, founder of AppManSecrets.com and Business-Appcelerator to get his top three tips on how to rapidly expand your business. Tip 1: Remember who it’s for The one thing big businesses know, that small businesses don’t, is that research and development is worth the effort. Find a way to gather ‘insights’ from your audience (sadly you can’t just ask them, because their answers will be limited to their imagination). If you can do this better than your rivals, then your products and services will stand out like a beacon and people will flock to your solutions. Tip 2: Use anonymous products

Everyone’s busy, everyone’s trying to sell, and nobody wants to let a salesmen into their life without qualifying them first. So if you want to grow your business you must have a product that people can have access to, without having to give their details first. We call this a Product for Prospects or P4P, and every good business has one. Tip 3: Stand out from the noise There are two great ways to have your product stand out from the crowd: Innovation, Entertainment, or both. When the Transformer toy was first created it didn’t sell. Then they decided to create a cartoonseries, as a result it became one of the most profitable toy lines in the world – an example of a great

P4P – and has even created two Hollywood blockbuster movies.

Simon K Williams

Simon answers Adele Theron’s questions on expanding her business

Adele Theron is a London-based South African who specialises in getting people over divorce with her 21-day Naked Divorce program. She had the following questions on how to rapidly expand her business: I never have enough time, how do I expand when I’m flat out already? Productise. You must distil your knowledge into a form that is easily distributed and consumed. Any consultancy or coaching service is inherently un-scalable. Successful companies find a way to solve this and expand through productisation.

What are the best types of products for rapid expansion? In the past for your industry it would have been events. Although still viable, now you need a big network, or a good Joint Venture to make those work. DVDs are a little old school these days. Mobile apps are the big thing, they provide a very rich, personal, scalable, easily distributed solution that have replaced the audio and DVD products we may have used in the past. You can use your app to create a database of qualified prospects who will be hungry for your core services, which will rapidly grow your business. How do I create an app to support my business? Work out the number one reason why your customers buy from you; it’s usually something emotive, like trust or fun. Then create a solution that delivers that experience. McDonalds demonstrates that they are a fun place to visit for

kids by giving away toys (they are the biggest toy distributor in the world), the quality of the food is irrelevant. For more information on Simon and how to accelerate your business, visit www. THE GRAFT IS GREENER

Victoria Canham | Anti-Money Laundering Training Project Manager in London Born: Cape Town How long in the UK: 7 years Job: Anti-Money Laundering Training Project Manager Background: I trained to be a chef in South Africa but when I moved to London I discovered I had a love for project management and software so I jumped straight in and developed my passion into training and coaching, with the aim of helping others to become proficient and less fearful of software, and life too I guess. Motto: The only thing standing between you and your goal is the excuse you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.

by PAUL HARRISON What do you do in your job? Stakeholder engagement, damage control and a lot of technical authoring. What is the most exciting thing about your job? Exciting is probably not the right word - banking regulation is not exciting, it’s enjoyable and fast paced with a lot of tense moments and a whole bunch of great colleagues – but it’s not exciting. What is the most challenging thing about your job? Trying to work out what the FSA are going to change next and possibly stakeholder engagement, where they have usually been overpromised to and damage control is always required. Tell us an interesting story related to your job.

AAT is an entrepreneurial group with active development and growth plans. Applications in writing together with a C.V. should be submitted to Mrs. Carrie Perepeckzo at PA@africaalbida.co.zw or delivered to the Head Office of AAT at Greystone Park Shopping Centre, Gaydon Road, Greystone Park, Harare. All references must be contactable and applicants who do not meet the above criteria should not apply.

I have signed more non-disclosure documents in this role than I ever thought possible. AntiMoney Laundering is a sensitive, fascinating business that affects so many facets of business and banking. Future plans? I want to get more involved in executive coaching and implementation management, helping organisations to achieve what they promise and more. Do you think being South African helps in your job? Definitely, I think people recognise that as a South African, I have a playful side and think work should be fun so there is always banter in my world, but I also have a nononsense approach to my work and expect the best and nothing less from my colleagues. It’s definitely

a South African trait. Read more interviews with South African professionals at www. thesouthafrican.com/business

Australia ups migration intake to fill skills gaps by STAFF REPORTER IN the 2012-13 Australian Commonwealth Budget announced in May, the government had good news for South Africans hoping to migrate to the country. The financial plan outlined a targeted increase in numbers accepted on the Migration Program to support Australian regions and sectors with acute skills shortages. The standout feature of the Budget was an increase of 5,000 places in the Migration Program from 185,000 places in 2011‑12 to 190,000 for 2012-13 made up of 129,250 skilled stream places, 60,185 family stream places and 565 special eligibility places. Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Chris Bowen MP said the increase “comes in the context of significant skills gaps in both the short and medium term in certain sectors of our patchwork economy” and that skilled migrants “are complementing rather than competing with our domestic labour force.” International removals company, Anglo Pacific, has already noticed a surge in enquiries for Australia in 2012, up 15% to date for the same period in 2011. The Company attributed this rise to the Australian Government’s other latest initiative – SkillSelect. Combine this with the increase in allocations on the Migration Program and Anglo Pacific could be in for a very busy year shipping personal belongings down under. Jason Diggs, Sales Director for Anglo Pacific, the UK’s largest independent international removals company, said “With the knowledge that SkillSelect, a new invitation-only visa system with no guarantee of permanent residency, is coming into force on 1 July 2012, we’ve had a rush of interest from applicants using the old points criteria while they can. They will be further encouraged by the fact that there are now more places on the Migration Program as Australia endeavours to meet genuine skills needs rather than just paving the way for those who simply wish to live in Australia for its climate and way of life.” Anglo Pacific sponsors the Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) which represents over 2,000 registered migration agents worldwide. Communications Manager Brian Duff explains; “I would consider it to be good news, especially for our key UK source market, that the Government has increased the number of skilled and family places available to migrants. “The Australian Migration Program will undergo significant changes from the start of the 2012-2013 year on 1 July 2012, particularly to popular employer sponsored visa types.

Inside Mandela’s ‘gilded cage’ Elizabeth Glanville gets a rare glimpse into Mandela House - the place where Madiba spent his last few years of imprisonment

by ELIZABETH GLANVILLE GROOT Drakenstein Correctional Centre, formerly Victor Verster prison, in the Cape Winelands, found fame in housing Nelson Mandela during the last few years of his imprisonment. Mandela House itself is tucked away at the back of the Centre where you’d never know it existed – indeed very few did back when Mandela was held there – and was opened up to a fortunate few a couple of years ago. Now The South African has been inside… After a whistlestop tour of the juvenile department we drive off down the dust tracks to the rear end of the prison. We pass farm buildings and plots before coming across the good-sized, peach tinted bungalow that Mandela referred to as his ‘gilded cage’. The dwelling earned its nickname due to the

relative luxury afforded by the lock-up that allowed an element of freedom while still being surrounded by guards and sporting razor wire on its walls. The house continues to be guarded by two officers who are reclining in the sun while eyeing our approach. My friend and I are accompanied by an officer who opens up the house as we wander around Mandela’s pool and garden. Apparently Mandela rather enjoyed this space, the peace and isolation allowing him time for the pondering that had to fall by the wayside once he was back in the public eye. His daughter Zindzi also treasured the quality time she got to spend around the pool with her father. Inside, the house smells musty and is deathly quiet. Despite the fact that a lot of the original

Mandela House, in the Cape Winelands, still contains some artefacts that Mandela used during his imprisonment.

artefacts have been removed, a number of the late 1970s fixtures are still here, as well as furnishings and a few appliances such as his washing machine and hoover. The authenticity of the place – as yet unspoilt by guard ropes and laminated information sheets – is almost tangible and you’d have to be made of steel to not feel stunned by such surroundings. From the kitchen we move through deserted bedrooms – one of which was used as a gym by

Mandela – and bathrooms to reach the master bedroom which still holds his bed. The living area contains the dusky pink armchairs where Mandela would sit to receive visitors, and I creep towards the dining room table where some of the most important decisions in South Africa’s history were made. With a nod of permission from my escort I perch on the very chair Mandela would have used during those meetings. On leaving Groot Drakenstein we

pause to take in the ten foot high bronze statue of Mandela punching the air, capturing his iconic initial moment of freedom when he was released on the afternoon of 11 February 1990. The inscriptions remain powerful and inspiring, Mandela imploring us to use our freedom to live in a way that betters the life of others, ‘as part of the international struggle for human solidarity against all forms of oppression and exploitation’. Long may his legacy last.

Springbok steak and a Toblerone martini? by ELIZABETH GLANVILLE BELUGA, one of Cape Town’s Caviar Group restaurants, situated in a century-old courtyard in Green Point, is a quality dining experience. Choose from seafood, sushi or steaks, including the requisite springbok and ostrich, or opt for dim sum and Asian tapas. To start I’d recommend the seared tuna salad with avocado and spicy dressing, or the springbok carpaccio if you want to remain authentic. The sushi platters – currently half price all day – contain such delights as salmon roses and nigiri and offer plenty for sharers. The beef wellington combined with duck liver pate is rich yet delicate, and you can’t go wrong with a beef fillet or spaghetti dish. Beluga offers an extensive cocktail menu with such delicacies

as a Toblerone martini and blood orange coconut mojito. The wine list comprises more than 200 varieties, including some of South Africa’s finest vintages. If you’re celebrating, a bottle of Tattinger or Moët will go down a treat with your guests. So sit yourself down in the cobbled courtyard of Beluga, or move inside to the spacious yet cosy city-loft style interior, and look forward to a night out. And once you’re finished drop them a line – Beluga will donate R25 to

UNICEF SA for every feedback e-mail they receive. Recently Beluga has been experimenting with molecular gastronomy, with highly imaginative results that challenge conventional culinary ideas in both composition and presentation. Soon you will be able to follow suit in the comfort of your own kitchen when Beluga release their Molecular Gastronomy kit later this year, containing the ingredients and essentials to get started. You will be able to follow their instructional DVD and recipes to investigate this nouveau style and produce all sorts of weird and wonderful creations such as white chocolate spaghetti or dessert egg. Sizophakama - Higher featuring Tytan, Josmas, Chipo, Pauline, Tererai, Jusa and Tafirenyika.

Zimbabwe Olympic anthem to spur athletes to glory A song produced by the UK-based Africa-centric record label ABRA has been earmarked by Zimbabwe Olympic Commission as its official Olympic anthem.

by NICOLE HOLGATE SING when you’re in Zim-ing! Zimbabwe has received some extra support in its Olympic bid in the form of song. The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee has given its support to the track featuring a number of contemporary artists singing in Ndebele, Shona, Chingezi and English. ‘Sizophakama – Higher’ was produced by the UK-based ABRA Records and is a fusion of dialect, chant, and song which is meant

US$19 million to educate Zimbabwean girls YOUNG Zimbabwean girls are set to receive a better education thanks to the Campaign for Female Education (Camfed) programme that was launched by MDC Senator David Coltart in Guruve last week. A British agency, the UK Department for International Development, has unveiled a US$19 million bursary fund to support the project for 24,000 disadvantaged secondary schoolgirls throughout Zimbabwe. In her remarks at the launch ceremony, Angeline Murimirwa from Camfed, implementors of the programme, said the initiative is meant to break the vicious cycle of poverty commonly associated with the girl child, by ensuring the provision of basic education. The principle on which Camfed was founded is that education can change everything. Research shows that in sub-Saharan Africa, 24 million girls can’t afford to go to school. A girl may marry as young as 13, and has a one in 22 chance of dying in childbirth. One in six of her children will die before the age of five. The research also shows all that can be turned around by education: Girls with

to represent the unification and patriotism of the nation of Zimbabwe. The track features the vocal talents of Josmas (Joseph Mashoko), Tytan (Njabulo Nkomo), Chipo Sarudzai (Chipo Mushuku), Jusa Dementor (Tawanda Sibotshiwe), Afrizim Arts (Tafirenyika Mushuku), Tererai Mugwadi and Pauline Gundidza. Is this a worthy anthem for Zim’s Olympic bid? What song would you choose? Let us know at thesouthafrican.com/zimbabwe educations regularly earn up to 25% more, and reinvest 90% of their earnings in their families. They are three times less likely to become HIV-positive, and they have fewer and healthier children who are 40% more likely to live past the age of five. Since 1993, Camfed has fought poverty and Aids by educating girls and empowering young women. Nearly 1.5 million children in impoverished areas of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Ghana and Malawi have benefited from the innovative education programs. United Nations Secretary-General Ban KiMoon said, “Investing in girls and women is likely to prevent intergenerational cycles of poverty and yield high economic and societal returns.” Camfed believe every child has the right to an education, and they help girls throughout their development from primary school to adulthood, providing fees, books, equipment, counselling and encouragement. Coltart has been a human rights lawyer in Zimbabwe since his return to the country in 1983. He was first elected to represent the Bulawayo South House of Assembly constituency in June 2000, and was reelected in March 2005. In March 2008 he was elected as a Senator to represent the Khumalo Senatorial constituency in Bulawayo. Senator Coltart was sworn in as Minister of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture in February 2009. In his address at the ceremony, Coltart said the gesture by the UK Department for International Development is a positive move towards improving relations between the two countries, strained by the imposition of sanctions by Britain and her western allies. by KWAME WILSON AS if representing your country and being the best in your sport wasn’t already a great incentive, athletes from the South African Olympic team have another reason to bring home the gold: currency, and lots of it. The official governing body for all Olympic affairs, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committeee (Sascoc), announced the incentive scheme for medals, at a press conference in Johannesburg on Wednesday. Any South African Olympian who wins a gold medal at the London 2012 Games will be rewarded with a sizeable amount of R400,000. Trips to the podium courtsey of winning silver and bronze will result in the awards of R200,000 and R80,000 respectively. Paralympians will receive R100,000 for a gold medal, R75,000 for silver medals and R20,000 for coming in third. The hard work and dedication put in by the coaches will not go unnoticed as they too will receive

big pay-outs should the athletes they train sprint, shoot, or swim etc their way to a medal. Coaches of Olympians who strike gold, silver and bronze will be paid R100,000, R50,000 and R20,000 respectively, while coaches of successful Paralympic athletes will take home R20,000, R15,000 and R10,000, for coming first, second or third. Sascoc CEO Tubby Reddy was on hand to announce the details of the medal-winning incentive scheme. “Obviously winning an Olympic or Paralympic medal is in itself a huge achievement and something to be cherished for life. “But we felt that it was only fitting that there also be some sort of financial incentive as well. We are all too aware of the sacrificies made by our leading sportsmen and women (and their coaches) and this should go way to rewarding them”, said Reddy. Sascoc president Gideon Sam said that the incentives for the Olympic and Paralympic medallists differed vastly because of the different levels of

competition in each event. “In the Paralympics approximately 4,000 athletes are competing for approximately 500 medals, while in the Olympics, there are around 10,500 athletes competing for only 300 medals,” Sam said. He gave the example of the 100m final at the Olympics, where only one gold medal is available, whereas in the Paralympics, various disability classification systems mean 13 medals are up for grabs. Track stars such as Caster Semenya and Oscar Pistorius are among the potential medal winners on show this summer. With a strong SA contigent in the UK and especially in London, Sascoc is hopeful of a much better performance than in Beijing during the 2008 Games, where South Africa walked away with just one silver medal. The Paralympic Team, which has fared well in the past, will be looking to build on their haul of 30 medals at the last Games, 21 of which were gold. The London 2012 Games start

on 27 July until 12 August, while the Paralympics kicks off on 29 August and will end on 9 September. Do you think it’s fair that

Protea batsmen dominate England

Hashim Amla becomes first South African to score 300 runs in a test match, Smith and Kallis amongst the runs too at Kia Oval

by WESLEY MCKAY SOUTH Africa's batsmen heaped misery on the English bowlers on days three and four of the first Investec test at the Oval. Three of the Proteas' top four batsmen scored hundreds with Hashim Amla stealing the show with a historic 311 not out. It took Amla more than 800 minutes at the crease and over 500 balls to reach the landmark, which he brought up with a cover drive over the heads of the off-side fielders. The South African bowlers struggled on the first day with Alistair Cook and SA-born Jonathan Trott frustrating the attack. England finished the day with 267 runs for the loss of only three wickets. Day two was a different story. The previous day’s bowling had been inneffective, but with the overcast bowler-friendly conditions, the bowlers steam-rolled through the rest of the England line-up, leaving England’s final total at 385. A slight break in play because of rain delayed the start of the Protea innings. Morné Morkel was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets that included the scalps of Strauss and Trott. SA’s innings got off to an otherwise questionable start as Alviro Peterson was dismissed for nought in the first over. Peterson was trapped lbw in front of his wickets by James Anderson, which brought Amla to the crease. Amla strolled out with the look of a man completely relaxed and in control, determined to see out difficult batting conditions late Friday. Smith and Amla did just that, seeing the Proteas through to close of play with 86 on the board. Day three saw the sun come out and South Africans runs difficult to come by. That was until Graeme Smith got his halfcentury off 160 balls, the slowest 50 in his career. The captain upped the tempo to get his next 50 in 41 balls. Smith went to his 25th test match century in his 100th test match, cementing his place as arguably South Africa’s greatest-ever captain. Amla went to his hundred with a beautifully patient and

well-crafted innings, just what was needed by the Proteas top order. Smith will count himself unlucky that Tim Bresnan’s ball cannoned off his bat, pad and heel and on to his stumps to bring his gritty innings of 131 to an end. Kallis and Amla took the game away from England with Kallis getting his 50 off 93 balls, finishing the day on 85 while Amla closed on 171 not out. Day four started fairly slow at first, but then the run rate went

up to the match average of about just over three an over. England’s bowlers toiled in the sunshine, but were unable get past the stubborn defences of Amla and Kallis. Amla reached his 200, followed by Kallis’s 43rd test century in his 147th test. It was also the first time in England’s long history that any team had scored two consecutive 250-run partnerships against them. Kallis’s record in England had been questioned before the game, but he responded in typical

Kallis fashion finishing his innings unbeaten on 182. The star of the show however was South Africa’s top-ranked batsman Amla, who received rapturous applause and a long standing ovation from the crowd, as he became South Africa's first

triple centurion in tests, surpassing the previous best of 278* by AB de Villiers in 2010. England will commence the final day on 102/4, looking to save the test, but will come up against a bowling attack eager to nip out the last six wickets and claim victory.

ERNIE WINS FOR MADIBA ‘Big Easy’ shoots 68 in final round to clinch title in 141st British Open

A

by ROB FLUDE s a South African, one had to pinch oneself this weekend just past. After Hashim Amla’s triple century feat at The Kia Oval, and the Sharks dominating the defending champion Reds in Brisbane to claim a semi-final spot, one could barely have believed it when Ernie Els picked up his fourth Major title, and first since 2002, when he won the British Open again. It was a remarkable effort, considering Els was six shots off the pace heading into the final round, and indeed still four away from leader Adam Scott of Australia going into the last four. But that is where the wheels came off for the likeable Aussie golfer, as he imploded, bogeying each of his remaining holes at the Royal Lytham & St Anne’s course, and with Els claiming a birdie on the 18th with a superb 15-foot putt, Scott had yet again delivered heartache to a country that has only seen two Major winners since 1995. It is of great irony that Australian golfers have now gleaned the

“choker” tag after repeated failures at Major tournaments, in much the same way the Proteas cricket team habitually fell short in crunch matches against their bitter rivals. What is of even greater irony is that the 42-year-old Els accomplished what is known in Australian sporting circles as “doing a Bradbury.” For those not in the know, former Aussie ice-skater Steven Bradbury won a gold medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics after all his competition collapsed in front of him and he simply cruised over the line unhindered. Sport can be so cruel sometimes. South Africa’s Els, whose illustrious career includes the US Open title in 1994 and 1997, and British Open in 2002, picked up the £900,000 in prize money for his win, but interestingly enough, also broke a sequence of the previous nine Majors being won by first-time Major winners. However, he is the 17th consecutive different Major winner, which shows the rude health in which the game of golf finds itself. He also moves up to 15th in the world rankings. The Big Easy dedicated his victory to former president Nelson Mandela, who turned 94 last week, and spoke of wanting to take the famous Claret Jug and have a drink out of it with Madiba. It is also worth noting that Mandela famously telephoned Els in 1994 to congratulate him personally on his win, something Els remembers fondly. Although some would say Scott was desperately unlucky and that he had been looking ominous since his first round 64, perhaps Ernie did deserve the win, as he was the only player the whole tournament

to return four rounds of par or better. However, Els was only too sympathetic to Scott’s plight, in a way we only know of him. “I feel for my buddy, I have been there, lost majors, lost tournaments. I just hope he does not take it as hard as I did. I’m so happy to have won

but I have been at the other end more.” “I saw him in the scorer’s hut. He seemed OK. I told him to stay positive, not to let it linger, that he will turn it around. He is still young enough. He’s 32. He has 10 years to win more than I have.”

Another South African, Thomas Aiken, finished the tournament on 1 under par and tied seventh, with 2010 Open winner Louis Oosthuizen two shots back. The next Major is the US PGA in four weeks’ time. www.thesouthafrican.com/sport
