I did my first interview about The S Magazine and the journalist, from a publication that will remain nameless, said to me, “You’ve got a very ‘diverse’ staff.” She put particular emphasis on ‘diverse’ as if to elude something. I think she thought, because I’m very confident in my self-concept, that we are an ‘alternative lifestyle’ magazine. I proceeded to tell her that WE ARE NOT. Dating someone who is HIV-positive is commonly referred to as a “Mixed-Status” relationship. Being with someone who has a positive status can be a risk, but many people don’t know there are precautions to minimize those risks. Darriane Martin, prevention manager at AIDS Arms, Inc., a Dallas-based HIV/STD testing center, suggests before starting a new relationship to ask questions and be sure to have open conversations about protection.
“It’s important to [talk] about using condoms and alternatives to sex, like mutual masturbation, oral sex, and cuddling,” she said. “Be sure to have condoms on-hand and regular testing is always a good idea.” Going to the doctor can be intimidating, but it is important to know if you’re maintaining a healthy status. A good rule of thumb to test for any STD’s is at least one time per year or with every new sexual partner, said Martin. “If you’ve been in a relationship for three years and it’s a committed monogamous relationship then once

every year is fine,” she said. “If you’re dating and seeing multiple people, it’s good to get tested after coming out of that relationship and before entering a new [one].” Why is it so important to get tested for STD’s you may ask. Well not everyone is the same, meaning that not reactions can vary to the STD in the same way. Martin said symptoms for HIV can vary from person to person. “Most people won’t show symptoms of HIV until much later when they’re very sick,” she said. “There truly are no universal symptoms for each person.” When talking about a mixedstatus relationship, people focus more on maintaining the HIV-negative person’s status, overlooking the fact that the HIVpositive person can grow sicker if infected with other diseases. “We always think about the negative person getting infected,” said Martin. “If the HIV-negative partner has any other STD they can make the HIV-positive person sicker.” A common misconception is that HIV-positive people can’t have a normal family. Although having offspring can be a risk, it is possible. The couple should discuss having children with a doctor before doing anything. “The doctor will give them information on the best

means to go about having children.” Most people assume once someone is HIV-positive they can no longer have sex with anyone else, which isn’t the case. “Just because a person is HIVpositive, doesn’t make them off limits for dating, touching, or even sex,” said Martin. “Because we have medications that help prolong a person’s life, people who are HIV-positive can be just as entitled to an active healthy sex life as anyone else.” It’s important to be educated about safe sex and having an open mind to mixedstatus relationships. You can’t really understand what an HIV-positive person is going through unless you’re also HIV-positive. So before having any sexual relationships, be sure to get tested so you can stay negative, in a positive situation.

#theSmag: How did P.E.E. come to light and what was the motivation? P.E.E. We wanted to enhance our fashion desires elsewhere. Uel wanted to move to New York and I (Courtney) wanted to move to California where I feel bold fashion is more prominent. We ran across a fashion magazine that stated Dallas is considered to be one of the top 5 most fashionable cities. And our initial plans were to expose the fashion that Dallas has to offer.

Fashion week in New York was only in our recent history, and from collections like Marc Jacobs, Prabal Garung, and Louis Vuitton we immediately see bright color blocking and neonic splotching over flowing gowns, dresses, pants blazers, and even accessories like belts, bracelets, and bags. Stella McCartney, Prada, and Michael Kors mix in fun prints, and stripes with colors, as well as neutrals on top of vibrant hues for drastic eye catching effects. For men it’s a little different. While women seem to be propelling into a colorful ultraviolent dimension, men are returning to their primal roots; fabric-wise that is. Linen is popping up on runways across the world, and collections like Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, and Prada are taking advantage of the minimalist trend that is catching in both men’s and women’s clothing. White is also a return to the origin of color and is being crafted into sleek suits, blazers, and sweaters. Not to be left out though, these neutrals were frequently blended with ultraviolent hues in the forms of bags and shoes. Now if being compared to a giant bowl of fruit loops or being mistaken for a potato sack (I kid of course, no one would say that about you) is not your pace, there are other trends that are just as great and head turning. Floral prints are very in and designs by H&M, Gucci, and DKNY have being on the train, and going full force in the floral assault on fashion. Roses seem to be the flower to beat this spring and it’s justified with combinations of pinks, reds, and neutrals to give of a fanciful appearance. 38

Every year the sailor trend comes back and this year is no different. Nautica, Christian Dior, and Fendi have gone seaside, and brought highly satuared reds, navy blues, and creams to accentuate the high wasted shorts and blouses. Men, show your stripes. Perry Ellis, Jil Sander, and Michael Bastian have all decided to experiment with strips this season and it has made them look amazing; the brighter the color of the stripes, the better. And if you want to turn it up
to 11, fluorescent is the way to go. Calvin Klein and Jil Sanders have crafted sets of these radiant suits and blazers that give retro vibes and emanate youth. The trick to this look is to stick to one fluorescent color-too many can take away from the desired effect. With spring and summer around the corner, it’s no surprise that bring colors, floral prints, and neutral fabrics have taken over and defined the momentary culture of the season.

This is the usual, and almost ritualistic, pattern that we exhibit daily and is one that can take up almost all your morning free time. “What will I wear today?” People use their own personal take on fashion and what looks good on them to formulate the best combination of outfits that will not only satisfy particular situations, but suffice for other events. PANTS: The perfect wash of jeans or the perfect fit of khakis or slacks can make or break an outfit. Pants are an important player in the game of dress up. How you wear them can create an outfit have a very sophisticated polish to it or even a dresseddown more casual feel. For women, ¹a sturdy pair of dark wash jeans, ²pair of black cigarette pants, and the ever flirty ³cut off shorts is key for those moments when you need to make a quick run or just to go out. Men, a nice pair of ¹black trousers, ²dark wash skinny jeans, and ³straight leg khakis will almost cover the complete basis of the lower part of your outfits.
SHIRTS: A simple outfit can be spiced up with a detailed and eyecatching shirt, the opposite is true that with a simple crisp white or solid black shirt, an outfit can have a “easy-going” look. For women, a 4men’s button down shirt can give an outfit a masculine edge. Not so much as to overpower, but surprisingly, add a little more of a feminine splash to the outfit. Suits are not so much in your daily wardrobe; beyond work, but they still hold a high place in the hierarchy of clothing. The weekend cannot truly start until the weekend 19duffle bag is packed and your favorite pair of 20aviator shades are present. It’s always a task trying to figure out what to wear for the day, playing a timed game of mix-and-match while giving your closest the stare of death. everal artists go undiscovered, never receiving the praise or admiration their art deserves. One young artist has been painting since she was a toddler. Sandra Martinez expresses her art in more than one medium: canvas, jewelry and accessories, and make-up. All this, but her goal is not to mix work with her art.
The 20-year-old says her inspiration began with reading. “I was
into reading a lot. Most books that I read were chapter books. They didn’t have pictures so I wanted to see how things would look outside of my head. I started sketching. It took a lot of practice, but eventually I got [my sketches how] I wanted them to look,” she said.
Her first sketches at a young age, as Martinez remembers, were
bumble bees and then went into a fairy phase. These creations were the start to what are now portraits, album covers, and realistic paintings. In high school, she drew paintings based on the literature she read in class like Hamlet and Heart of Darkness. One English teacher says a painting of hers is hanging on a wall in his living room. “She’s multitalented, very artistic in a lot of different areas. It’s not surprising that she would do other things.”
Jewelry is another way she expresses herself through art. Her style
is a combination of mystical fantasy and earthy. “I have a really weird taste when it comes to [jewelry]. I go around looking for places that sell jewelry that l would like. I generally find what I’m looking for online and it’s usually super expensive. “Martinez wants to give Dallas a style of jewelry that, she says, is hard to find. Her jewelry expresses an alternative mixture of

Two of their newest talents, Lil’ Rick and Millz, are helping to enrich the Dallas hip-hop scene with their innovative lyrics and musical expression. The S Magazine got a chance to sit down with both Millz and Lil Rick for their first interview. #theSmag: Lil Rick, tell us something about yourself. Lil Rick: Well, what do you want to know? I’m from Tennessee originally. Dallas transplant and I’m “Just Chillin”. #theSmag: Aside from being ‘lil’ (he’s 5’ 7”) is there another reason they call you ‘Lil Rick’? Lil Rick: Dallas is so different from where I’m from. I love Memphis, but being here in Dallas exposes me to a whole new style of living, style of music, just a whole new lifestyle. The Diary of an HIV-survivor It was a Saturday in April of 2009--a sunny beautiful day. I remember it like it was yesterday. My sister and I had planned to spend some time together but I just had one stop to make and then my day could begin.
I drove to the clinic where I had been tested for STDs two weeks before. It was
time to get my results. I just knew that I was clean because I was careful. I told myself “You have nothing to worry about.”
My dog waited for me in the car because I knew it wouldn’t take long to hear that
I was healthy. When I got inside the clinic, I asked, “Is Michael here?” Just as I asked, he came through the door with a faint smile and escorted me to his office.
“Hi,” I said with a smile and pep in my worry-free step.
“Hello, how are you?” he replied.
“Good! Ready for my results so I can go.” He was calm so, to me, that pretty
much confirmed that I was clean. I knew that he was going to say ‘Everything came back clean, have a good life...’ So I trusted his demeanor.
He told me to sit down, I sat. He was in front of me, positioned as anyone would
expect a counselor to be. My nerves overcame me. He made small talk but honestly I can’t remember what it was about. I just remembered him finally saying “Your test results are back.” My face was enlightened with a smile. In my mind I was going to hear you are negative but instead he said, “Your test proved reactive to HIV.”
“What does that mean?” I asked. Since he didn’t say it the way I had imagined I
asked for clarity on what he meant hoping that his explanation would match what I originally expected. He said it again the exact same way and continued to explain to me that I was HIV-positive.
DISBELIEF crowded all thoughts and logic. I couldn’t even respond. How could
he tell me this so easily? I began to question myself. “How could this be true?” “I did what I thought I was supposed to.” I didn’t believe him. I was not the image of HIV that I so tried to stay away from. I didn’t do the things that I thought HIV-positive people did. Denial and disbelief had been given to me at the same time as my test results. -Anonymous
