Jacob Marx Rice (LENI & JOSEPH). Jacob’s work has been produced at Actors Theatre of Louisville, Nuyorican Poets Café, Atlantic Theatre Stage 2, and others. His play series The Suicidal Comedies - consisting of the plays Chemistry, Coping, and Cracks - has been produced around the country and has won the Kennedy Center’s Jean Kennedy Smith Playwriting Award, the Excellence in Playwriting Award and FringeFAVE at the NY Fringe Festival, Producer’s Pick at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, and Producer’s Encore Pick at the Hollywood Fringe. Other plays include Leni & Joseph (Last Frontier Theatre Conference; The Shelter, workshop), Uncertainty/Principle (Finalist, Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference; Finalist, EST/Sloan Project), and Almost Happy (Actors Theatre of Louisville; Seymour Brick Memorial Prize for Playwriting). Jacob is 2017 Playwright Observer at the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, a member of The Shelter, and an MFA candidate at NYU for Dramatic Writing. Maiken Wiese (THE OTHER KIDS RAN AWAY) is an actress and playwright from the Pacific Northwest who has re-planted herself in Brooklyn. Her writing has been performed at the Shelter, Sticky!, Gotham Comedy Club and Manhattan Theater Source. Her short play, In the Ninth Month won the audience pick and was featured in the Encores week for the Estrogenius Festival 2011. Maiken received her BA in Drama from the University of Washington. She has acted at The Shelter, Ensemble Studio Theater, The Flea and Seattle Children’s Theater. Her acting film credits include “The Widowers” and “Awake.


DIRECTORS

Anna Strasser (LENI & JOSEPH) is a New York director who is passionate about developing new works. This is her third production with Jacob Marx Rice after Chemistry and Coping, both of which were extended as a part of the New York International Fringe Festival. She recently directed the premiere of Jerry Lieblich’s I’m so Hungry I Could Fuck a Horse.This November she will direct the premiere of April Ranger’s Must Wash Hands at the Rattlestick Theater. Credits include Concertina (Dixon Place), I Was Loved by a Rat (FringeNYC), About Face (The Brick). She is pursuing her MFA in Directing from Brooklyn College. Kat Yen (THE OTHER KIDS RAN AWAY) is the 2016-2017 Van Lier Directing Fellow at Second Stage, a member of New Georges Jam, and a M.F.A. Directing candidate at Yale School of Drama. She has directed and set-designed at NYTW, Cherry Lane, Alvin Ailey Theater, New Group, EST, Signature Theatre, Bushwick Starr, JACK, New Ohio, INTAR, Harvard/A.R.T., The Flea, Wild Project, HERE Arts, Atlantic Stage 2, Primary Stages, Poetic Theater Productions, Rising Circle, Yangtze Repertory, LAByrinth Theater, Horse Trade, C.O.W., American Theatre of Actors, Theaterlab, Gene Frankel, June Havoc, Columbia Univeristy, N.Y.U. and TFNC amongst others. Samuel Adams* (L&J, Joseph). Born in Manhattan, raised in the Catskills. Trained at Adelphi University and the London Dramatic Academy. New York credits include Summer & Smoke (at Theatre Row), Surface to Air (at the Symphony Space Theatre), The Execution of Mrs Cotton (IRT Theater), Dionysus in The Bacchae (Miller Theater), In Vestments (Theater for the People), As You Like It (Ophelia Theater Group), and the title character in Hamlet (Kraine Theater). Regional credits include Under Milk Wood, The Rimers of Eldrich, The Taming of the Shrew, and Alex in A Clockwork Orange. Film/TV credits include: ABC’s Time After Time, HBO’s Mildred Pierce, indie films Make Way for My Way, John 3:16, and A Separate Peace, as well as VO and MoCap for an upcoming video game from Rockstar Games. Directing credits include: Hamlet, The Birthday Party, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and Chekhov’s The Bear. Atlas Talent; Andreadis Talent. Thank you, to my family. AEA, SAG-AFTRA Jessica Afton* (L&J, Leni) is excited to continue her work with The Shelter community, which she joined in 2014. In her time in New York, she has cultivated collaborators through her training with LAByrinth Theatre Company, Scott Freeman Studio, and ESPA at Primary Stages. In 2016, she established a film production company, Viscera Productions, with a focus on socially

relevant filmmaking. She has worked in new play development with various institutions including The Lark, The Actors Studio, and The Farm Theater. She was most recently seen onstage in Queen Latina and her Power Posse (LAB Members/Cherry Lane Theatre) Off-Broadway credits: The Death of Bessie Smith (New Brooklyn Theatre). Jessica is a proud AEA and SAG/AFTRA member. jessicaafton.com Heather McDevitt Barton (costume design) is a Brooklyn-based artist, textile maker, and designer. Her work has been seen with Atlantic Theatre Company, Columbia University, Pipeline Theatre Company, Clarence Brown Theatre, Playwrights Horizon Theatre School, New York University, Cape Rep Theatre, IRT, and Ars Nova. Heather currently works as resident costume designer for Salty Brine’s Spectacular Living Record Collection, Atlantic Theatre Company Creators for Kids, and for Kaiser’s Room, a non-profit theatre company developed to create theatrical works for children with developmental disorders. She holds two BAs in English Literature and Theatre from the University of Tennessee. Rolando Chusan (TOKRA, Ben) is a New York based actor. Favorite credits include Don Quixote (National theater for education and arts), Lament (Midtown international theater festival), and Italian American Reconciliation (Mag-


gie Flanigan Studio). He grew up acting in the south Bronx where he continued to pursue his training. Rolando is a graduate of Fiorello H. laguardia high school, Hunter college, and most recently the Maggie Flanigan two year conservatory. rolandochusan.com Cindy Fernandez (TOKRA, Astrid) is a New York based actor whose most recent projects include: The Lovelies (Cherry Lane Theatre), Tongues (Reading Series), Usual Girls (Columbia Stages), Marisol (Luna Stage), Dead Wives Dance The Mambo (Ensemble Studio Reading), Untranslatable Secrets (Torn Page) and Beige (Multistages). Jake Fine (lighting designer) is a New York-based lighting designer and resident artist with The Shelter. His work has been seen Off-Broadway, nationally, and internationally. He currently tours as the Lighting Supervisor for Ailey II. MFA: NYU. jfinelights.com Kimberly Flores (assistant stage manager) is a recent City College graduate from the Theater program. She is excited to be a part of these new works and hopes to continue working with The Shelter. She is an aspiring writer, actress and director who is currently working on a web series she hopes to put out in 2018. Spencer Hamp (TOKRA, Josh) is a very recent transplant to New York City, and prior to his move out here, he lived and worked in Seattle, WA. Credits from the past year include Trofimov in The Cherry Orachard (ACT Theatre),

Edmund in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (Seattle Children’s Theatre), Clown in The Winter’s Tale (Seattle Shakespeare Company), Kincaid Chance in the 2-part world premiere adaptation of David James Duncan’s The Brothers K (Book-it Repertory Theatre). In the fall, he will be playing Alan Strang in Equus at Pittsburgh Public Theatre. spencerhamp.com Daniela Hart (sound designer, TOKRA, assitant director) studied at the ECU School of Theatre & Dance and is now a freelance director and sound designer based in Manhattan. Recent directing credits include The Parlour (Soho Rep Walker Space), Private Room #6 (The Flea), All That Remained (short film), Money Lab (HERE Arts), The Misanthrope (BrooklynONE) and Harvey (Island ETC). Daniela is also a member of the Literary Wing at the Lark Play Development Center. Cody Hom (L&J, stage manager) is a recent grad from Brooklyn College and dabbles in sound design. This is Cody’s first time working with The Shelter, and he is delighted to be here. Outside of theater, Cody is also a graphic designer, cartoonist, and animator. Kasey Lee Huizinga (TOKRA, Lelou) is a Brooklyn naive. Her recent theater credits include: Riot Antigone (La Mama, Ars Nova), and By The Num-

Recently, she worked as an Associate Stage Manager at The Public on the Bring a Weasel and a Pint of Your Own Blood Fesitval. She is a recent graduate of Brooklyn College and is ready to take on the world! Sam Jackson (TOKRA, stage manager) is joyous to once again be working with The Shelter. A graduate of Kean U.’s Theatre and MALS Programs, she has played many roles backstage. She would like to thank all for a most enjoyable experience. Paco Lozano* (TOKRA, Mr. Brau) returns to The Shelter mainstage, where he was last seen as Pando and Greeble in Lily & Kosmo Live. Paco co-stars in the upcoming feature film Bushwick (Cannes and Sundance), starring Dave

Bautista and Brittany Snow. He shot a National Coke commercial earlier this year. He is head mentor for the PS 111 branch of Young Storytellers, dramaturg/director at 52nd street project, and part of The Shelter family. MFAFSU Asolo Conservatory. This performance is for mom and dad. Christine Nyland (TOKRA, Becca) is an actor, writer and producer based in Brooklyn, New York. She plays Jane in Terence Krey’s supernatural throwback series, Graves, and Jess in the award-winning web series Brothers. Look for her animated series Wrinkles & Sprinkles, featuring the work of several fellow Shelter artists, this fall. Daniel Prosky (scenic design) is a New York-based scenic and lighting designer. New York work includes scenic design for Ragtime (Ellis Island), Story Bank (Skylight One Hanson), Little Murders (Site-specific), and The Gleaming (Dixon Place) and lighting for Wheelchair (Dixon Place), Antigone (Schapiro Studio), Houseworld Presents: The Sensitive Ear and 1969: The Second Man (ANT Fest, Ars Nova). Recent work in Cambridge, MA includes scenic design for The Pulitzer Centennial Celebration (Sanders Theater), Bride*Widow*Hag (American Repertory Theater Institute), Nine, Little Murders, The Pillowman, and Antigonick (Harvard-Radcliffe Dramatic Club, Loeb Drama Center). Before moving to New York in Fall 2016, Michael was the Production


Manager at Georgetown University and a freelance designer and technician for many producing companies in Washington D.C. where he was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Lighting/ Projections Design in 2015. In addition to supporting Brooklyn College’s esteemed program, Michael has worked on several exciting projects in the City, including designing projections for Bamboo in Bushwick with Working Theatre/ArtNYC and Llama Theatre’s

The Woman Who Shed Her Skin that performed at Dixon Place, HERE Arts Center and the Brighton Fringe Festival (UK). In addition to serving on staff at Brooklyn College, Michael will begin coursework towards a Master of Fine Arts in Design this Fall. Michael is thrilled to be collaborating for the first time with the amazing artists at The Shelter and looks forward to more mischief in the future.
