Earth, Wind & Fire — “Now, Then & Forever” Tour

- H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center at Shippensburg University 10/30/2013, 8:00 PM During the 1970s, a new brand of Pop music was born — one that was steeped in African and African-American styles — particularly Jazz and R&B but appealed to a broader cross-section of the listening public. Earth, Wind & Fire embraced this style and bridge the gap that has often separated the musical tastes of black and white America. They combined high-caliber musicianship, wide-ranging musical genre eclecticism, and 70s multicultural spiritualism. 1871 Old Main Drive, Shippensburg, 717-477-SHOW, www.luhrscenter.com

Getting to the art of Central Pennsylvania By Deborah L. Hershey For the Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau Tree-lined streets, patrons strolling from one gallery to the next, live music drifting in the evening air...Bucks County? No, right here in the midstate! The creative spirit is alive and well in the Cumberland Valley and the evidence is everywhere. Galleries, art centers, shops and artists’ studios are the treasures of the area’s cities and small towns. Lo-

cal arts events and fine craft fairs celebrate the blend of traditional craft and fine art that is unique to this area of Pennsylvania. Jewelry, musical instruments, furniture, pottery, textiles—handcrafted items of beauty and function; fine art—paintings, sculpture, photography—the offerings are as limitless as they are diverse. This artistic energy is building force, gaining momentum. More and more, our area is seen as a destination for those in search of

true American arts and fine crafts. The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, one of the largest and most respected craft guilds in the country, has one of its largest and fastest-growing chapters based in Carlisle. The Yellow Breeches Chapter of the PGC has seen a 30% jump in its membership rolls since early 2012. Active guild member Paula Lewis credits the shared encouragement and support of fellow members—among

them artisans whose work is highly sought-after, collected internationally, even gracing the covers of magazines. Recognizing the benefits to our area’s quality of living, the Yellow Breeches Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen opens its membership to anyone with an interest in the arts. The Village Artisans Gallery, a top 10 retailer of American Craft in the nation, is located in Boiling Springs. Owner PJ Heyman

credits the large number of visitors from outside the area with helping to keep the gallery in the black. She cites the appeal of the area geographically—its convenience as a stopping place to those traveling east to west, as well as those traveling north to south. These visitors, she says, are drawn to items crafted by local artisans. Networking among local restaurants, hotels, B&Bs, and other area attractions is essential for promoting all area busi-

ness, PJ Heyman says, but it is especially helpful in increasing the awareness of the arts and artisans in this area. Community art walks, exhibits, festivals and shows are also enjoying an increase in popularity and attendance from visitors to our area. “First Fridays” in Mechanicsburg and “First Saturdays—Art in Carlisle” in Carlisle showcase local galleries and the artists they represent. Brews and baubles in Cumberland Valley Cumberland Valley is home to gifted craftsmen that make everything from beer to home decor to jewelry. Whether you’re wearing, displaying or tasting these fine artisan crafts, you’ll be sure to love every moment of this handmade weekend. Begin your trip in historic downtown Carlisle. History on High - The Shop is home to a collection of locally crafted treasures. Find jewelry, soaps, ornaments, cards, pottery and more tucked into this cozy shop. The shop is also home to the Cumberland Valley Visitors Center. Pick up any of the 300+ brochures, flyers and guides on display. Whether you are looking for local or regional attraction information, dining suggestions, or great places to shop, we’ve got you covered! Your next stop is within walking distance. Colucci & Company’s beautiful jewelry is crafted on-site, and if you’re lucky, you might see the shop owner and crafter at work. The shop also carries an assortment of other artisan crafts including pottery, photo frames and glass. It will be hard to pick which restaurant to have

lunch at, but some suggestions include Café Bruges or Market Cross Pub & Brewery. Café Bruges serves traditional Belgian fare including savory crepes and mussels, and offers a large selection of Belgian beers. Market Cross Pub & Brewery serves traditional English fare including fish and chips and shepherd’s pie, but the most memorable part of the menu is the selection of over 250 beers from all around the world! Market Cross also carries a selection of their own brews on tap. Nex t , e n joy c r u i s i n g through the scenic countryside as you travel to Meadowbrooke Gourds. The largest gourd manufacturer in the country, this family-owned business grows, cleans and crafts gourdeous creations. Tours are given during special weekend events, but even a stroll through the whimsical storefront will show why this hidden gem was featured on the Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs”. No artisan craft tour would be complete without stopping for a sweet temptation at Brittle Bark in Mechanicsburg. Featured on

the “Rachel Ray Show”, this unique manufacturer creates gourmet chocolates and their signature Brittle Bark. The more unusual offerings include chocolate dipped cookies, chips, rice krispie

State parks events ring in the season Cumberland Valley is home to three state parks, Kings Gap Environmental Education Center, Pine Grove Furnace State Park and Colonel Denning State Park. These parks are often thought of as a summer destination with great places to hike, cool down in the lakes, and gather outdoors with friends and family. The parks offer unique, seasonal events and activities in the upcoming months to remind you that they have just as much to offer when the weather cools down. • Even a simple day hike when the leaves start to change offers a new perspective on the Valley’s outdoor beauty. Find recommendations for fun hikes on VisitCumberlandValley. com/10hikes. View a sampling of the park’s upcoming events below and start planning your outdoor adventure today.

KINGS GAP ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER Golden Trails: More Talk, Less Walk – October 8th Carl Leinbach will lead a leisurely trail exploration for hikers who would prefer to take time to look closely at the curiosities of the natural world rather than covering distance. Bring your cameras, field guides and stories to share during a 1.0-1.5 mile hike over fairly flat terrain with an uneven walking surface. Water and sturdy shoes are recommended, and trekking poles, if you have them. This event is designed for older adults who enjoy socializing while hiking at a relaxed pace. The program is free but registration is required by phone: 717-4863799. Mountain Retreat - Hawks and Owls – October 19th & 20th

Enjoy the comforts of the historic Cameron-Masland Mansion, overlooking the Cumberland Valley, while experiencing the natural beauty of the surrounding forest. In the peak of the migration season, take a guided trip to view migrating hawks from atop scenic Waggoner’s Gap. During the evening, weather permitting, join bird banders from the Ned Smith Center as they capture and research the secretive northern saw-whet owl. Accommodations, meals, program fee and transportation are all included in the cost. Call 717-486-5031 for rates or to register for this unique weekend event. Fall Foliage Hike – October 20th Enjoy a moderately-paced, 2.5 mile hike over winding, mossy trails in the mansion area, with a few ups and downs and many stops along the route. Trekking poles will be available. This free program meets at the education building in the Mansion Area. Pennsylvania Owls – October 26th & November 1st Join us for an overview of owls commonly found in PA, followed by information about saw-whet owls complied as a result of a decadelong cooperative research project, conducted by the Ned Smith Center for Science and Art, and hosted by Kings Gap. Weather permitting, licensed banders from the Ned Smith Center will monitor capture nets throughout the evening. If owls are netted, you will be able to observe the banding and data collection process indoors on a live bird. This free program will be held in the education building and is suitable for ages six through adult. Holiday Open House – December 1st & 8th

Enjoy this annual opportunity to explore the Cameron-Masland Mansion, a gracious mountain stone villa built in 1908 as a summer home. Take a self-guided tour of both floors of the mansion in seasonal decor. Patricia Putz will be performing holiday melodies on the Celtic harp on Dec. 1, and Janet Spahr will play the hang drum on December 8th. Light refreshments will be offered each afternoon. All ages are welcome to attend this free event. Please join us for the festivities!

Celebrations at Roundtop Mountain Resort Rou n d to p Mo u n ta i n Resort will be celebrating its 50th season this year. In 1964 a group of local businessmen realized their dream of opening a ski resort in South Central Pennsylvania. It all started with four slopes, a double chairlift and a couple of rope tows on the mountain. Since that time, Ski Roundtop has grown to nineteen slopes serviced by five chairlifts and four surface lifts. With the addition of extensive summer operations, they changed their name to Roundtop Mountain Resort to better reflect the year-round attractions. Now over 750,000 people have begun their lifetime of winter fun at Roundtop. Some have gone on to careers within the ski industry, others met their future husbands and wives on the mountain, and some are now even sharing the slopes with their children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. Roundtop invites you to celebrate your special occasions with them as they honor their 50th season. Think outside the box! Hosting an upcoming bachelor or bachelorette party? How about paintball, the ropes course, Vertical Trek, or a group ski/ snowboard lesson! You can also get out for

dinner with a view at the Fireside Pub & Grill, open daily during the winter season. The grill features a fresh new menu, favorite drinks and a great view of the mountain. Join the celebration with one of these upcoming events: Craft Beer & Fine Food Expo - October 26th Enjoy a variety of craft beers paired with delicious food selections. Beers will be paired with food and the event includes all the food and drink you can consume. Purchase tickets online, includes a souvenir glass. Live music by local favorite Tuckahoe Ridge. Cooking up fun in Cumberland Valley T h e fa l l a n d w i n t e r months are perfect for cooking up cozy meals for your family and loved ones. It’s also the perfect time of year to learn new recipes and make fun dishes for the upcoming holidays! Enjoy a fun night out and learn some new dishes and culinary tricks at the Valley’s cooking class hot spots. Several times a month, patrons gather in the Culinary Kitchen and Cooking School at Cornerstone Coffeehouse in Camp Hill to meet and relax - frequently with a glass of red wine - while the talented chef, Chuck LaPorta, prepares a superb meal before their eyes. Unlike other cooking schools, the Culinary Kitchen encourages but does not require guests

to come forward for a closer look at Chef LaPorta’s cooking techniques. Cornerstone specializes in creating a relaxing experience for guests who, in many cases, have just finished a hectic day at work. Empty stomachs are recommended, and all classes are BYOB. Guests of the Culinary K itchen who do seek a hands-on experience find Chef LaPorta to be both h i g h ly p e rso n a b l e a n d skilled. Over the past decade he has instructed hundreds of Cornerstone’s cooking classes and never once duplicated a menu! His delicious homestyle recipes come truly, as he says, “from my heart to your table.” Each one of Chef LaPorta’s menus is

crafted around a central theme such as Homemade Pasta and Sauces or, for the first time ever, a Wild Game class coming up in October. The Culinary Kitchen itself is an intimate, Tuscan-themed dining room located at the back of the coffeehouse. The customdesigned space features a full kitchen along with an HD television and six hightop tables that can seat up to 24 guests. Many guests agree that a night at Cornerstone’s Culinary Kitchen makes a perfect birthday gift, business event or just a fun night with friends! View a sampling of the upcoming seasonal classes below and check out the website for the full list - http://www. cornerstoneculinary.com/ full-schedule/.
