2006 Trimbach Riesling Alsace, France | $21 Alsatian wines are the ultimate food wines, and few do it better than the Trimbach family. This is a dry Riesling with a ton of minerality.

2007 Domaine Maby La Forcadiere Rose Tavel Taval, Côtes du Rhône, France | $28 This rose drinks more like a light red with body and fruit that don’t quit. It is expensive for a rose, but wines from Taval don’t mess around. This is a serious wine that will rock your T-day.

2006 Pascal Granger Julienas Julienas, Beaujolais, France | $24 From a 200-year-old winery comes a true Beaujolais that drops bombs of dark fruit. This complex wine from a top producer is the Thanksgiving Day all-star.

2006 Alexander Valley Vineyards Merlot Alexander Valley, California| $24 Merlot gets a bad rap, but it’s actually a fantastic food wine. This one is strong and structured.

2005 Bodega del Desierto La Pampa 25/5 Chardonnay Alto Valle de Rio Colorado, Argentina | $28 Hailing from a small vineyard in Patagonia, this subtle and creamy Chardonnay delivers great flavors of apple and pineapple.

2006 Bethel Heights Eola-Amity Hills Cuveé Pinot Noir Willamette Valley, Oregon | $33 The incredible Willamette Valley is climatically and geographically similar to Burgundy, France, home of the world’s greatest Pinots.

Stylistically, the Oregon wines are lighter in body and subtler than their California cousins. This bottle offers strong but balanced acidity and great fruit.

2006 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc Paso Robles, California | $35 Rich and big-bodied, this wine is modeled after the Châteauneuf-du-Pape white wines from France’s Rhône Valley. It has lots of tropical fruit and manages to find the perfect balance of oak.

1997 Kalin Cellars Cuvée DD Sonoma Pinot Noir Marin County, California | $50 From a mega-low-production vineyard run solely by a husband-and-wife team, comes the recent release of a Pinot Noir from a bygone era. This Pinot is not for everyone, but if there is that special wino you’re looking to impress, hunt down a bottle of this wine and blow his or her socks off.

et’s get one thing straight: Kosher wine doesn’t have to suck. It’s not all sweet and syrupy

Manischewitz. The gist behind Kosher wine is that

people of the Jewish faith perform the entire winemaking process, from growing the grapes to bottling the

MONDAY NIGHT

WINE CLUB

product. By this school of thought, if

HANUKKAH

a non-Jew opens the bottle, the wine is no longer Kosher. The way around this is to get a Mevushal wine, which is flash-boiled. While it does affect the quality of the wine, this process allows the bottle to be handled by non-Jews.

4 wines 4 courses for $30

Simply put, grab yourself a few bottles and kick back a glass at the adults’ table while your cousins fight over chocolate gelt. 2005 Herzog Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley, California | $35 A high-end Kosher wine from a well-known Californian wine region. It has flavors of blackberry and green pepper, and won’t taste like cheap plonk.

2006 Covenant Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, California | $90 This is pretty much the most badass Kosher wine you’ll find anywhere. It’s big, it’s dry, it’s California Cabernet—only with a Jewish twist.

2006 Byblos Unoaked Chardonnay Mendoza, Argentina | $13 When you need an inexpensive Kosher white, Argentina is the place to be. This Chardonnay tastes of apples and pears.

2006 Yarden Mount Hermon White Golan Heights, Israel | $15 This Kosher Chardonnay and Sauvingon Blanc blend is from the rocky and volcanic soil of Golan Heights. It’s priced right and, if need be, can help drown out conversation from the relatives.

red white sparkling

2007 Carmel Moscato Samson, Israel | $12 A Kosher, sweet dessert wine from Israel? We were pretty surprised to see find this, too. Grab a bottle of this low-alcohol sweetie for the lightweights in your family.

2007 Barkan Chardonnay Negev, Israel | $13 This is a popular and inexpensive Kosher wine that is available in most markets. Works well with chicken or fish.

2005 Barkan Cabernet Sauvignon Galilee, Israel | $13 As far as Kosher reds go, this one is an all-around winner. It’s not too expensive, and it’s an unexpected choice.

T

CHRISTMAS

his holiday is all over the map. Every family has some sort of tradition, but all involve food. We’ve

put together a list of wines that span the snarfing spectrum, from ham to roast beef, from oysters to lobster—even Christmas cookies. Take a second or two and figure out what Grandma will be

cooking, and choose your wine accordingly. Remember, if your family doesn’t really know much about wine, there is no need to splurge. There

are plenty of great bottles for only a few bucks. Not to get all Charles Dickens on you, but Christmas is

red white sparkling dessert

more about getting together with family or friends than impressing people. Save the fancy stuff for New Year’s Eve with that hottie a few days later.

2007 Dr. Loosen Dr. L Riesling Germany | $12

2007 Domaine St. Cosme Côtes du Rhône Côtes du Rhône, France | $12

2006 A to Z Pinot Noir Willamette Valley, Oregon | $20

Not feeling the traditional Christmas? Instead, uncork a bottle of this lightly sweet wine and order some Chinese takeout.

Deep, dark and juicy, this red from France is inky in color but manages to not be overbearing. It works well with beef, meatballs or pork.

Oregon Pinots are lighter than their California cousins, allowing them to play well with salmon, tuna and light meat dishes.

N.V. Bava Bass Tuba Moscato d’Asti Piedmont, Italy | $13

2007 Frog’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley, California | $18

N.V. Lustau Dry Amontillado Los Arcos Sherry, Spain | $17

This sweet, lightly fizzy dessert wine is incredibly low in alcohol. It’s perfect with afterdinner treats, but can also step in as a great cocktail before the meal.

A crisp, food-friendly white with a lot of minerality. It drinks like a French Sancerre with a Napa Valley twist. Drink with oysters or other shellfish.

This ain’t your grandma’s sherry, but she’ll definitely appreciate a glass or two. Don’t be afraid to drink this at the dinner table with salty pork.

2004 Darien Crianza Rioja, Spain | $16

2005 Clos LaChance Hummingbird Series Buff-Bellied Zinfandel Santa Cruz, California | $19

2005 Paitin Nebbiolo d’Alba Piedmont, Italy | $22

This mellow and smooth red pairs well with most holiday dishes. Additionally, it makes for a suitable drink during before-dinner mingling.

This is a bold and dry red from the winery’s vineyard in San Marin, Calif. It has great dark fruit flavors with a little sweet vanilla on the end.

The main grape in Italy’s famous Barolos and Barbarescos, this red meat-loving wine is similar in quality, but doesn’t come with the expensive price tag.

first hangover of the year, so you might as well party like

a rockstar the night before. Even though New Year’s Eve rarely lives up to the expectations of epic debauchery, you might as well kick back as much bubbly as possible. While we’re not advocating the mass consumption of highend French Champagne, we do urge you to spend a few bucks more than the $4 bottles of grocery store “champagne.” Spanish Cava starts at less than $10 per bottle, and we can guarantee you’ll be thanking us the next morning.

sparkling N.V. Sofia Blanc de Blanc (187ml cans) California | $20

N.V. Gruet Brut New Mexico | $15

Francis Ford Coppola’s vineyard produces this tasty, Chardonnay-based sparkling wine. Although it is primarily distributed in bottles, we opt for the cans on New Year’s Eve. They are about the size of an energy drink, so stuff them in your pockets or bag and become a mobile celebration. No matter where you end up, you’ll be prepared.

Yeah, that’s right: New Mexico. This stuff is effing tasty. Flavors of green apple dominate this affordable Southwestern bubbly.

N.V. Geisweiler Cremant de Bourgogne Burgundy, France | $21 N.V. Cristalino Brut Spain | $9 When you need enough bubbly to bathe in, look no futher than Spanish Cava. Cristalino is, without a doubt, the highest quality sparkling wine for the money.

N.V. Casteller Rose Cava Spain | $12 Need pink bubbles? Grab a bottle of this dry, Spanish sparkling wine. The bright fruit flavors of strawberry will help get some makeout at midnight.

Go Old World with a great sparkler from Burgundy, France. It’s a bright and dry wine made with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

2003 Westport Rivers Brut Cuvée RJR Massachusetts | $22 This local Massachusetts winery makes killer sparkling vino with grapes grown on the premises. Soft and creamy, it’ll make you think twice about buying wines from half a world away.

N.V. Roederer Estate Brut California | $24 N.V. Mionetto Prosecco Brut Veneto, Italy | $12 Another great inexpensive bubbly option for New Year’s is Prosecco. The Italian take on Champagne is a lot less pretentious and expensive than the French stuff.

This French winery, best known for producing Cristal, set up shop in California’s Anderson Valley and has been producing awesome sparkling wine for over 25 years.

N.V. Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne, France | $40 The cheap stuff is great, but sometimes you need to splurge for the authentic New Year’s experience. This is one of the best Champagnes for the money, and while the name is difficult to say (pronounced: nee-co-LA foy-YAHT), this wine is so much fun to drink.

2003 Soter Vineyards “Beacon Hill” Brut Rose Willamette Valley, Oregon | $60 If you’re having a nice dinner, spending a quiet evening at home or just want to roll like a baller, consider this epic Oregon bubbly. Made by the famed winemaker from Etude, this bottle is hand-crafted in the same way as high-end, single-vineyard Champagne.

N.V. Bollinger Special Cuvée Champagne, France | $75 If it’s good enough for James Bond … yeah, this is 007’s choice of bubbly. Made from some of the highest, self-imposed quality control measures in Champagne, Bollinger doesn’t screw around. This is a seriously delicious bottle of wine.

party wine

he season is awash with get-together invitations from friends, co-workers and relatives. The courteous thing to do is bring something, so why not some tasty vino? When bringing wine for social slurping, there is no need to go crazy. Go for an easy-drinking

cocktail wine that doesn’t require food. It’s best to bring a wine you like to drink, and try to learn at least one thing about the bottle. Talking about the wine you brought is a great way to break the ice.

Attention hosts: The proper etiquette, when receiving a bottle of wine, is to open it up right away, before you open your own wine.

2006 João Portugal Ramos Marques de Borba Tinto Alentejo, Portugal | $15

2007 Fournier Sauvignon Blanc Fournier Sauvignon Blanc Vin de Pays du Jardin Loire Valley, France | $11

2006 Loimer Grüner Veltliner Weinland (1,000ml) Kamptal, Austria | $15

This is a whole lot of wine for the money. It’s simple and easy to drink, but really shines when used to wash down tiny tidbits of cheese and cured meats that often accompany holiday parties.

A party isn’t a party without Sauvignon Blanc, so go old-school and get a crisp and clean wine from France’s Loire Valley. It’s awesome with cocktail shrimp, hard cheeses or just by itself.

Best known for its ability to cool down a hot summer’s day, Grüner also makes a great holiday sipper. This pairs perfectly with seafood apps, like crab cakes and oysters, but best of all, comes in the traditional 1L bottle.

2006 CMS White by Hedges Columbia Valley, Washington | $10 This is our inexpensive white cocktail wine of choice. While it’s not overly complicated, it’s very agreeable and the price kicks ass. For 10 bucks, you get a Chardonnay-based white from Washington that’ll agree with your whole party.

2005 Bodegas Crisve Nomeda La Mancha, Spain | $10 For only a few bucks, pick up this smallproduction, mostly-Tempranillo blend from Spain. It’s smooth, easy to drink and has great fruit.

2006 Andeluna Malbec Mendoza, Argentina | $12 This big, juicy, fruit-forward wine has the ability to satisfy the majority of party-goers. From the dry wine drinker to sweet wine sipper, this Malbec will win over the entire crowd.

2006 La Posta “Cocina Blend” Mendoza, Argentina | $15 A blend of Malbec, Bonarda and Syrah, this is a great wine with appetizers, but this inexpensive bad boy stands out from the crowd when used to wash down rare beef.

Château Saint Cosme “Little James Basket Press” Côtes du Rhône, France | $13

2006 Turtle Creek Chardonnay Lincoln, Massachusetts | $30

This is an entry-level wine from a killer wine producer in the Rhône Valley of France. Don’t let the cartoon-ish label fool you—there is amazing wine for the money in this bottle.

Yeah, that’s right … the grapes are grown and made into wine less than 20 miles from downtown Boston. Impress your Californiadwelling, wine-snob relatives with bottled New England deliciousness.
