Next week, a formal launch for the group begins the real test for the SBA, part of a renewal campaign started by Scarborough’s Rotary clubs last year. “We recognize Scarborough’s

strengths of location, skilled labour and diversity,” Marg Middleton, the association’s president, said in a release this week. “Strong business benefits the entire community.” The launch is on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre on Morningside Avenue. Speaking at 7 p.m. are Middleton, who is the former general manager of Metroland

For the first time, giant pandas have been born in Canada at The Toronto Zoo. Mom Er Shun gave birth to twins Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 3:31 and 3:44 a.m. All three are doing well, said Cynthia Shipley, spokesperson for the Toronto Zoo, adding everyone there is beyond excited. “It’s a dream come true,” she said. “Everything is going

very well, and we’re cautiously optimistic.” The tiny cubs, which weigh less than a half-pound each, and Er Shun, are being monitored by Toronto Zoo staff and two giant panda experts from Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China. Scarborough teen dies after being hit by car on Western University campus last week TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com The loss of a young life is being mourned in the Scarborough community and beyond. Andrea Maria Christidis graduated with honours from Leaside High School earlier this year, full of promise for the future. The 18 year old died Friday, Oct. 9, two days after being hit by an alleged drunk driver while returning to her dorm from a study lab at Western University in London, ON. The Scarborough teen was walking on a campus sidewalk shortly after 10 p.m., when a car jumped a curb and hit her. A 24-year-old London man faces several charges, including impaired driving. “Andrea was a well-liked student who excelled academically and participated on a number of school teams,” said Leaside High School Principal Jeanette Plonka, in a letter sent home with students on Tuesday.

“She was enthusiastic, focused, positive and will be sorely missed by our students and staff.” Social workers and grief counsellors were on hand at the school when it reopened following the Thanksgiving long weekend. Christidis’s family is “heartbroken and deeply saddened” by the loss of a “kind, compassionate and loving human being,” it said in a statement Thanksgiving Sunday.

“She was deeply loved, as reflected by the outpouring of condolences, sympathies and prayers from all those that she touched,” the statement added. “Her beautiful smile, kind soul and infectious spirit will be missed. May her memory be eternal.” The statement finished with a condemnation of impaired driving, and a request for privacy. Christidis had just started studying health sciences at Western, hoping to work in the medical field. “This is a terrible tragedy, and Andrea’s death saddens me deeply,” said university president Amit Chakma in a statement. “I know that I speak for the entire Western community when I say that my heart goes out to her family and friends at this most difficult time.” The university lowered its flag in honour of Christidis Wednesday, Oct. 14, as her funeral was held in East York.

Counselling services were available at the university as well. Western’s Hellenic Society also released a statement, encouraging people to keep Christidis’s memory alive, and not to drink and drive. “It is with heavy hearts that the Hellenic Society announces that we have lost one of our members,” it said. “We are forced to say goodbye too soon to a smart and beautiful young woman, for reasons that are inexcusable and could have been prevented.” A book of condolences was set up at Leaside High School, where Plonka said students are upset Christidis’s life has been cut short. “It has been a sombre day for all of us at our school as we mourn this tragic loss of life,” she said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Andrea’s family.” Support staff will remain at the school as long as neces-

sary to help students grieve. A Facebook page called RIP Andrea Christidis had more than 1,200 members Oct. 14. “It is absolutely heartbreaking to see a soul go like that because of irresponsible decisions,” said the about section of the page. Christidis was laid to rest in Scarborough. She is survived by her parents, Georgia and Chris, and her sister Alexia. Her obituary noted she was an active member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, where her funeral was held. It described her as having a passion for reading and travelling, and a love of soccer, skiing, swimming and the arts. “Andrea’s legacy will be forever treasured as she peacefully makes her way into heaven,” it read. “Andrea’s love of life and family has left an indelible mark on all the lives she has touched.”

Bluffs area residents frustrated by sidewalk decision DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com About a dozen houses on Midland Avenue near Lake Ontario will be getting new sidewalks, whether homeowners like it or not. That was the decision from Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee last week, when councillors voted to turn down pleas from residents on the road, asking that a planned sidewalk construction be abandoned. One of those residents, Dana McCabe, told the committee that the sidewalk would remove 3,000 square feet of greenspace, and could cause flooding on the steeply sloped road heading to the

Scarborough Bluffs. She also complained that the city had not consulted with the community when it decided to add the sidewalks in conjunction with work being done on the road by Toronto Water.

“If they had come to us at the beginning we might have come to a compromise, but we feel like we’ve been walked all over and don’t want anything to do with it,” said McCabe. Councillor Gary Crawford

took up the cause of the sidewalk-spurning residents and asked that the city not build the sidewalk there, noting that in his communities, at least, sidewalks were a “divisive” issue. “I fully support the construction of sidewalks, especially in my ward – I really do support sidewalks,” said Crawford. “But what I support is sidewalks that make sense...When you look at this particular little section, the community looked at the foot traffic and how busy that road is. They’ve indicated there’s very little foot traffic.” Crawford noted that most foot traffic coming south on Midland veers off to the road down to Bluffer’s Park. The committee turned

Crawford down, however, and elected to go ahead with the sidewalk, which was recommended by city staff. Following the meeting, Crawford said the issue is an emotional one for the community because for years, homeowners have failed to fully accept that the road allowance in front of their homes is, in fact, city property and not their own. “A lot of those houses in that area are on very small lots, have very small frontages,” said Crawford. “A lot of people have put up hedges all the way to the road. Now it’s a safety issue, but the city didn’t come 20 or 30 years ago and tell them that they couldn’t.”

It’s time for voters to make up their minds C

an there be too much of a good thing? This summer and fall’s 11-week federal election campaign makes a persuasive argument when it comes to democracy. The campaign that began in the dog days of August is now nearly finished. Some readers will have already cast their ballots in advance polls over the Thanksgiving weekend. The rest of us will put this campaign to rest Oct. 19. And then it will be done: Canada will have a new government, or at least a new set of party caucuses that will be empowered to sort out who that new government will be. And what for the rest of us? Well, we are probably in for a long period of recovery our view from this jumbo-sized campaign that has been notable for its vitGet out and riol and divisiveness. For two-and-a-half months, vote for your well-funded political parties have flooding our attention with values Oct. 19 been awful assertions, often about one another, and all too often about ourselves. This may or may not win an election, but it certainly corrodes a country. Canadians have held a view of this country as inclusive and welcoming. While none of us are naïve enough to assume bigotry is absent, we have managed through, if nothing else, our legendary good manners, to hold that bigotry at least somewhat in check. We’ve done so also with the help of our leadership, who have through our history celebrated the country’s diversity, and gently chided outlying purveyors of hate, fear and division. Through this long election, we have been without that sort of leadership, or indeed any leadership. The Conservative government has rested in caretaker mode, busily defending itself against two strong contenders in the Liberals and the New Democrats. We are rudderless in this storm of ugliness. It’s something we can all consider as we cast our ballots. Are we choosing based on our own values, our own hopes for our federation, our communities and our families? Or are we slipping into fear and disdain and basing our choices on that? What motivates us may not make a difference to the outcome of this election. But it behooves us to remember: in making up our minds about our government, we are also making up our minds about ourselves. Please remember to vote Oct. 19.

Government ads must deliver substance To the editor: Each week more than 1,000 English and French community newspapers – including the nine published by Metroland Media Toronto, which is a member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association – go about the business of telling stories that matter to the communities they serve. We are at your rinks and schools. We are at your school board and council meeting. We are at the scene when tragedy strikes. We celebrate your milestones. Our job is to cover your community. And we are good at it. We are in towns big and small. Some community newspapers circulate well in excess of 100,000 copies. Some are in the hundreds. It may surprise you that each week, more than 20 million copies of community newspapers are distributed across the country. Independent research shows that more than 70 per cent of Canadians read their community paper. Despite our collective

strength, ours is a medium easy to ignore. Because we focus on Canada one community at a time, we lack the sex appeal of other media. We’ve seen our share of federal government advertising gradually erode over the years. Our regional and national associations have met with government MPs, opposition MPs, cabinet ministers and senior bureaucrats to promote our case. We are always met with courtesy and a promise that things will get better. Well things are not getting better. So despite it being contradictory to everything we believe in journalistically, the time has come to tell you. In short, the federal government is all but ignoring your community newspapers. We believe this means the federal government is ignoring you and your community’s right to be informed about programs and services offered by the Government of Canada. In the last fiscal year, the federal government spent $75 million on advertising. More than $26 million of that went to TV ads, while another

$15.5 million went to Internet advertising – an industry dominated by American-based companies like Google and Facebook. Creating ads and paying ad agencies ate away another $10 million. Radio advertising cost just under $7 million. By comparison, community newspapers saw a paltry $867,000 in total advertising from Ottawa – or an average of about $25 per week per newspaper. The way in which your government uses your money to communicate with you is very telling. TV and Internet ads work to build brand, not to inform. Your community newspaper generates debate and serves as a forum for discussion – and is also one of the few places where local MPs actually receive editorial coverage outside election season. The federal government knows it, too. The Prime Minister Stephen Harper government spent $1.25 million with a company called NewsCanada to create its own stories, stories it offers for free to print and broadcast outlets. The majority

of these government-approved stories are never published. But you and I paid for them. It is disconcerting the federal government spent 50 per cent more creating its own news than the total advertising buy in Canadian newspapers. The federal government strategy appears to be that it’s more important to make pretty ads than to put relevant information about programs in front of readers of community newspapers. They’re telling you they’d rather give your tax dollars to Facebook and Google than Canadian-based companies that invest in local journalism. If the federal government continues to ignore our community newspapers, some communities may lose them. When that happens a vital voice is silenced. If you believe, as we do, that government should invest in meaningful communication with citizens through community newspapers, we ask you to help us by contacting your local candidates. Be thoughtful when voting Oct. 19

have a project for you, good reader, as you head out to vote, and just as important, as you head back home to get on with the next few years of your life. Be thoughtful. This shouldn’t be a project, and for many readers it needn’t be. But after having spent a good chunk of both the summer and the fall in an election campaign that for a good many voters seems to have turned on women’s fashion at citizenship ceremonies, it is clearly necessary for a large portion of us. It’s not surprising that it should be so: across North America, the political discourse over the past few years has veered consistently away from thoughtfulness and toward the knuckle-headed. Donald Trump is currently riding high on the greasy fingers of a mosh-pit of knuckle-heads in the Republican primaries. He may well have gotten some ideas from former

david nickle the city mayor Rob Ford’s 2010 campaign that was propelled by knuckle-headed rhetoric. And no wonder that Stephen Harper and the Conservatives took the knuckle-headed lesson to heart in the latter half of their campaign, with the business of the niqab, the “barbaric practices” snitch line and so on. We’ll see just how well that decision works out for them on election day. It certainly seemed to have an impact in the polls, at least for a while, as a certain demographic of voter abandoned thoughtful consideration for fear and loathing. The real question is what kind of message that strategy reinforces on both the electorate and the clever strategists looking to elect future governments. If the Conservatives don’t prevail, then the impact will be limited on strategists.

After all, when Doug Ford ran from a problematic place for mayor in 2014, he came closer than you’d think to beating John Tory, but couldn’t quite make it. Rob Ford, had he been well enough to run, might have prevailed for a second term, and he might yet prevail should he choose to run in the 2018 campaign. In the U.S. Republican primaries, Trump might prevail with his anti-immigrant rhetoric in winning the nomination, but he also might not, and as to his chances of actually winning the American presidency... Ultimately, that’s not up to us. What is up to us is make it a project to be thoughtful, when clever people are offering serious temptation to be the opposite. We can start right after the election or better, we can start right now.

T h e S c a r b o r o u g h Ho s p i t a l Foundation hopes to raise $1 million for diagnostic imaging equipment at a weekend gala that will honour this year’s inductees into the Scarborough Walk of Fame. This Saturday’s Kaleidoscope Ball fundraiser, held at the Scarborough Convention Centre on Torham Place, will also celebrate the more than 47 nationalities that call Scarborough home. The money raised will go toward purchasing mobile radiography equipment, a Gamma SPECT nuclear medicine camera and an MRI patient monitor. Diagnostic imaging “Diagnostic imaging is so important because it’s the tools you use to diagnose,” said Michael Mazza, the hospital foundation’s president and CEO. “The ability to diagnose earlier is a huge component for successful outcomes.” The hospital’s longer term goal is to create a centralized diagnostic imaging concourse at the General campus on Lawrence Avenue so patients don’t have to move around the hospital to have different tests. “We want to create a better patient experience by having everything in one area,” Mazza said. The gala will honour this year’s five inductees into the Scarborough Walk of Fame: Betty Carr, former publisher of The Scarborough Mirror; Farley Flex, Canadian music promoter; Dr. Sophie Hofstader, award-winning dermatologist and community leader; Mike Holmes, home improvement guru, and Cherie Piper, Olympic gold medalist for

hockey. The induction ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Scarborough Town Centre, 300 Borough Dr., and is open to the public. “This list of inductees and the past inductees really exemplify excellence,” Mazza said. Some inductees have a personal connection to the hospital. Flex not only underwent surgery at the hospital’s General site for a sports injury as a teen, but his mother worked as a nurse there for decades. BETTY CARR Ten years ago, Betty Carr helped launch the Scarborough Walk of Fame. On Saturday, the community newspaper leader will receive her very own star at the annual event. “I never expected to be part of it in this way, so I am very, very honoured and very excited,” Carr said. Carr was publisher of The Scarborough Mirror when the SARS epidemic hit the community in 2003. “Scarborough was taking a bit of a beating because people didn’t want to go there. They were a little afraid,” she said. After the crisis, Carr helped form Stand Up Scarborough to promote the community. “From there, I suggested the Scarborough Walk of Fame, bringing people back who had made a difference in Scarborough,” she said. “And that’s how we started it.” The event was not only meant to

show Scarborough in a positive light but also to inspire local youth. The first event featured youth choirs and many young guests. Donations were also made to local groups that worked with youth. “Some of those early sponsors and drivers of this are still there: Centennial College, the Scarborough Town Centre, the University of Toronto,” said Carr. “It was tough work that first one. We were selling an idea.” Carr became publisher of The Scarborough Mirror in 1990 though her portfolio quickly expanded to include several other Metroland newspapers in Toronto. She was also heavily involved in many local organizations and was chair of Centennial College’s board of governors. Carr retired from Metroland three years ago.

FARLEY FLEX When Farley Flex was 17, he sustained a football injury and underwent surgery at The Scarborough Hospital. On Saturday, Flex, now 53, will be inducted into the Scarborough Walk of Fame. Flex is a Canadian music promoter who is well known for being a judge on the reality television series Canadian Idol. “I feel very humbled by the honour,” he said of receiving his own star at this weekend’s event. Flex grew up in Malvern and got his start in the music business in the area, organizing a break dance competition in the early 1980s. “That was my first event,” he said. He later managed Maestro-Fresh

Wes, Canada’s first mainstream rapper. Flex also ran youth programs in Malvern and, in 2001, helped establish FLOW 93.5, the first urban music format radio station in Canada. Flex has a personal connection to the hospital: not only did he undergo surgery there, but his mother worked as a nurse there for decades.

CHERIE PIPER

Olympic gold medallist and hockey legend Cherie Piper said she’s honoured to be inducted into the Scarborough Walk of Fame. “It’s where I grew up, it’s what I know and where I’m comfortable and it’s where I played all of my minor hockey,” Piper said of Scarborough. She noted that she’s “honoured” to be receiving her very own star at this weekend’s event in her hometown. Piper won three Olympic gold medals with the Canadian Women’s National Hockey Team in 2002, 2006 and 2010, as well as a world championship title in 2004. Piper began her hockey career in Scarborough where she was first enrolled in a boys’ league. She attended Albert Campbell Collegiate Institute where she and some schoolmates launched a hockey team. “We went out and gathered lots of equipment. I had lots of old equipment as well, and we started our own hockey team,” Piper said. “We got a couple of teachers to supervise us, and it was great that other girls ended up having some opportunities to try the sport that I loved so much.” Piper scored 40 goals and 78 assists for Canada in 111 career

games over 12 seasons.

MIKE HOLMES Mike Holmes is a television host, philanthropist and home improvement contractor Holmes started his career as a professional contractor in Scarborough. He has become Canada’s most trusted contractor and the host and co-creator of the hit television series, Holmes on Homes, Holmes Inspection, and Holmes Makes It Right. Holmes was unavailable for an interview prior to this weekend’s Scarborough Walk of Fame and Kaleidoscope Ball festivities.

DR. SOPHIE HOFSTADER Dr. Sophie Hofstader has been a family physician and dermatologist in Scarborough for more than five decades. She has been on staff at The Scarborough Hospital for more than 52 years. In addition to being one of Canada’s leading dermatologists, Dr. Hofstader delivered more than 4,000 babies during her 11 years as a family physician. For obstetrical patients, the program offers pre-natal classes, an early pregnancy assessment clinic, midwifery and doula services, water births, umbilical cord banking and a breastfeeding clinic. Paediatric services include a child development program, a Level IIC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, as well as a paediatric day clinic and day surgery, occupational therapy and speech language pathology.

“We are all focused on making the Scarborough community a great place to live and to work,” said Griffin.“The proceeds from this event will help the Scarborough Hospital Foundation to do just that. We were honoured to host this event at our dealership and to donate the grand prizes. We had a great turnout for the raffle and, of course, some

Michie Mee hosts Scarborough Community Multicultural Festival The Scarborough Community Multicultural Festival offers a day of free all-ages music this Saturday, but hasn’t said who its headliner is. Event organizers said the answer to that mystery will be “revealed soon.” What’s certain in the festival, going from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Scarborough Civic Centre, is hosted by Michie Mee and Miss Go 2 Girl. It features DJs Blackcar

and Pleasure and performers include African Entertainment Award winner Trinity. The Civic Centre is on Borough Drive, south of Scarborough Town Centre.

things that we were hoping she was going to do.” After the second baby was born, it was placed in an incubator, beginning the twin-swapping process that will be used to raise the cubs. Giant panda mothers only look after one offspring, so

zoo staff and the giant panda experts are stepping in to help both babies survive. The cubs are switched periodically, so each can get care and milk from its mother, alternated with hand-rearing. Two hours after birth, the second baby was switched with its sibling to begin bonding with Er Shun. The cubs will be hidden from public view for several months. If everything continues to go well, they will likely make their public debut in March. Zoo staff plan to update the public on the bears’ progress regularly. Following ancient Chinese tradition, the youngsters won’t be named until they reach 100 days old. It is not yet known how their names will be chosen. It could be several months before their sexes are determined by lab testing, which also must be done before they’re named. It will be months before their father is known as well. Er Shun was artificially inseminated May 14 with sperm from three males.

Two non-surgical procedures were used, using fresh sperm from her partner Da Mao and frozen sperm from two bears in China. It is possible the cubs could have not one, but two, fathers. The first fetal heartbeat was discovered Sept. 25, and the second Sept. 29, to the surprise and delight of zoo staff. The second time was the charm for Er Shun, who failed to become pregnant last year following artificial insemination. Giant pandas can only become pregnant once a year, during a 24- to 72-hour period. Er Shun and Da Mao were given chances to mate naturally, but they weren’t quite ready. Pregnancies can vary widely for giant pandas, ranging between 87 and 186 days. They have delayed implantation, so it wasn’t immediately clear if Er Shun was pregnant. Zoo staff watched her closely for clues, while Dr. Cathy Gartley, from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, performed regular ultrasounds. At birth, giant pandas are

blind and are about the size of a stick of butter. The pink babies have sparse white fuzz; it takes a month for them to develop the black and white coats pandas are known for. Cubs don’t open their eyes for up to two months, and don’t walk until they’re three months. They are weaned by nine months, and stay with their mom until she becomes pregnant again, usually when they are 18 months old. Er Shun and Da Mao arrived in Toronto by plane March 25, 2013, on loan from the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens. After spending five years in Toronto, they will head to the Calgary Zoo in 2018 for a five-year stay, before returning to China. “The panda babies will stay with us for two-and-a-half happy years at the Toronto Zoo, and then after twoand-a-half years, that will be the end of our five-year term from China,” explained Scarborough-Rouge River Councillor Raymond Cho, chair of the Toronto Zoo management board.

A good voter turnout is in the cards

good voter turnout is in the cards. I just placed my Elections Canada voter information card on my desk so I wouldn’t have to run around trying to remember where the heck I put it on election day, when it dawned on me that though I always bring it with me when I go to vote, I’ve never actually taken the time to read what’s on it. Sounds like a column if you ask me. So without further ado, here’s what I’ve been missing all these years and elections. On the left is the date of the big day. (That’s Monday, Oct. 19 in case you hadn’t heard.) Underneath it states that if your correct name and address appear on the card you are registered to vote. You look on the right for that. If either your name or address are incorrect, you’re advised to go to www.elections.ca to

For those who don’t have access to a computer, there’s an Elections Canada office address which is open seven days a week along with a toll-free number. I know I’ll end up on the website, but I figured I’d call the toll-free number to see if it was as user friendly as cyberspace. Much to my surprise and delight when the automated message came on there were only two, count ‘em, two numbers to press. Not the usual gazillion when you call a company these days. Not only that, but I wasn’t put on hold either. I was connected to a live operator immediately. Meanwhile back at the voter information card, next up is a notification that in order to vote you must be a Canadian

citizen, be at least 18 years old on election day and prove your identity and address before being allowed to do so. In order to find out what IDs are acceptable, you are again asked to visit elections.ca or the nearest Elections Canada office or call the toll-free number. The last piece of information on the front of the card is a reminder to bring the card with you and to be aware that it is not considered a piece of ID. What exactly qualifies as an ID? It turns out there are more than 50 available ones to choose from on the page. I checked to see if Elections Canada gives us points with any of the cards we use for IDs. Raids crackdown on illegal gaming

Police have busted four gaming houses in north Scarborough and are vowing to shut down more following a recent spike in illegal gambling establishments in the area. The latest bust happened at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 at a plaza at 121 Montezuma Trail near Brimley Road and Finch Avenue. Police allege they found 15 people inside the gaming house there and arrested three of them. Two were arrested for keeping a common gaming house while the third was arrested for possessing marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. “We seized approximately

one pound of marijuana as well as several thousand dollars from that individual,” said Det. Sgt. Gerry Heaney of 42 Division. In total, police seized $20,000 along with gaming equipment from the location. Also seized were ecstasy, crystal meth and the date rape drug GHB. Police displayed some of the seized drugs and slot machines at a news conference at the 42 Division station Friday. Over the past six weeks, police have executed search warrants at three other north Scarborough gaming houses: 141 Montezuma Trail, 4500 Sheppard Ave. E., and 3330 Pharmacy Ave.

Province to test out driverless cars The province will launch a pilot program in 2016 testing driverless cars. The automated vehicles, which use artificial intelligence to operate, will be out on Ontario roads starting Jan. 1. While there’s no indication how many driverless cars will be tested, a press release announcing the pilot notes there are 100 companies in the province currently involved in R&D for the automated car industry. A famed New York City public works civil servant, responsible for implementing a record expansion of bike lanes in the Big Apple, will visit Toronto for an upcoming talk. Jeanette Sadik-Khan rose to prominence as the city’s transportation commissioner under Mayor Michael Bloomberg, holding that post until 2013. Under her watch New York more than doubled its bike lane network and famed Times Square became a pedestrian plaza. Construction also began on the city’s first subway line, the Second Avenue Subway, in nearly a century. On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85-Alive” program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 per cent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Rashida Riel, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the Scarborough, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Don’t Dress for Dinner first show of the season for theatre guild MARIA TZAVARAS scm@insidetoronto.com Marriage seems to be one of those ideas that you either agree with or you don’t. Otherwise, you just improvise and do what makes you happy, while staging your marriage and portraying happiness to the rest of the world. This is the sordid affair, or in this show, multiple affairs that take place in Scarborough Theatre Guild’s first show of their 57th season Don’t Dress for Dinner, a farce by Marc Camoletti adapted by Robin Hawdon. Set in a beautifully constructed converted barn, and the home of Bernard and Jacqueline (Rob Schock, Velika Maxam), she has plans to visit her mother while he is planning a weekend with his old friend Robert (Holm Bradwell). Except Robert’s invite is really a precaution so Bernard does not get caught with his other visitor, his mistress Suzanne (Mallory Palmer). However, just as Jacqueline is about to leave she picks up the phone and learns the cook is on her way to make dinner. Suspicious, she confronts Bernard who tells her the dinner is for him and Robert. Suddenly, she is not going to visit her mother after all. Turns out she is having an affair with Robert and wants

to be with him, in their house, with her husband and unbeknownst to her, his mistress. If this sounds exhausting, all of this happens in the first 15 minutes, and it only gets crazier as the show continues. So what’s Bernard to do but devise a plan that his mistress is actually Robert’s, despite him already having one – his wife. In the meantime, the cook Suzette (Carolyn Williamson) arrives and gets thrown into the chaotic mess to cover all their backs. She has to play various roles including mistress, niece and co-cook, and she does amazingly well keeping up with the story twists that become more convoluted by the minute. This farce is like two rolled into one, with deceit and cheating all around. It’s a testament to the talent of the director, Vivian Hisey, who directs this cast convincingly throughout this whirlwind story. There is a lot of fast dialogue that doubles as poor excuses, constant action and copious amounts of alcohol and as the cast drinks more, it becomes even funnier. With several trysts, the lies become so complicated you might opt to just enjoy the show rather than try and follow it. Thankfully, the cast makes it worth watching. Williamson as Suzette has amazing comedic and improv talent. She is

a constant scene stealer and a pleasure to watch. Palmer as Suzanne is beautiful and alluring, but one thing she is not as the mistress is a bimbo. This is a refreshing change as mistresses in farces are generally mindless. She, however is funny, witty and also has amazing comedic talent. Maxam as Jacqueline plays the one being cheated on, and the cheater, extremely well. She has the best, doubleentendre one-liners that she delivers with a convincingly sharp tongue. Schock and Bradwell as Bernard and Robert are not only funny, but their scenes together are amazing. They drink, they squirm and they fight, but it’s fun to see them try to untangle themselves from their webs of deceit. This is a confusing farce, but it is a wild ride meant to incite laughter and be enjoyed, if not entirely understood. Sit back and enjoy the performances and the sheer insanity. Volunteer Board of Directors (up to 3 Community Volunteer positions available) The Scarborough Academic Family Health Team (SAFHT) consists of administrative staff and health professionals: nurse practitioners, registered nurses, a physician assistant, mental health team, dietician, health educator, chiropodist and pharmacist. It also has 20 affiliated family physicians and their office/medical staff. The SAFHT is part of a network of Family Health Teams engaged in primary care along with other dimensions of health care service delivery funded by of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The extended network of health care delivery includes Community Care Access Centres (CCACs) Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs), hospitals, specialists and lab services. As a provincially incorporated, not-for-profit corporation, SAFHT provides comprehensive primary health care services in an interprofessional setting to the patients of its 20 affiliated physicians. Funded 100% by the province, the team operates out of 11 locations, eight sites of which are primarily occupied by an affiliated physician practice. The ministry funding is to contractually provide programs focused on patient-centred care in the areas of chronic disease management, health promotion and disease prevention. In early 2015 the rostered and unrostered patients totalled over 34,000; located primarily in eastern Toronto and also spread across the GTA. SAFHT’s physicians who previously formed the Board have now decided to move to a mixed model of governance and are seeking up to three (3) community volunteers to join the SAFHT Board of Directors. As a Board Director, you will be responsible for directing the affairs of the organization in accordance with its constituting documents, applicable legislation, government contracts and policies established and communicated to Family Health Teams by the Government of Ontario. Directors would serve for a term of up to three years, subject to the renewal schedule of the by-laws. Significant experience on a not-for-profit Board of Directors is preferred along with an understanding of health-care administration and a desire to participate in making SAFHT a leading health care organization. To address the need for a diversity of skills, the current Board is looking for potential nominees with the following skills/experience: • Finance and accounting preferably acquired in a business. • Human and labour relations in a larger corporate or broader public sector environment. • Legal issue resolution and risk management from a corporate or broader public sector environment. • Government relations acquired in government or lobbying government from any capacity. • Corporate management preferably acquired in the business or not-for-profit environment.

SNEDDON, Kenneth Herbert Passed away peacefully at Markham Stouffville hospital, on October 7th, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. Leaving behind his loving wife Paula (Carbone) Sneddon of 28 years, his son Kenneth George Sneddon (Ashley Speers), his mother Doris Sneddon, his sister Linda Elizabeth Sneddon and his nephew Kenneth Gary Sneddon (Jessie Lyzwa). He extended his love to his two step sons Kevin Anthony Jones (Kristy Kopacz) and Paul Daniel Jones (Darlene Greenlund). Following his cremation, a private memorial service will be taken place at a later date. With this chapter at a close, now his new adventure begins. May his journey be peaceful.
