I am proud to say that the first month of 2014 has passed, and what an amazing start to the New Year it was! We are absolutely thrilled about the love and support we are getting from all of our readers, and we cannot wait to see what the rest of the year holds. As we turn the page on January I wanted to take a second to promote one of my favorite holidays because it is, after all, coming up very fast. I’m talking about Valentine’s Day! You can never go wrong with flowers and chocolate, this might just be the most classic romantic idea in history (Make it white chocolate if you want a bit of originality there) Horseback riding Treat your sweetheart to a spa day, where either A.) You do the work. or B.) you get them a gift card to a spa A lover’s hike If you live near the beach and it's warm, go for a walk. If it's not warm? BONUS! Give her your jacket to wear for the date (You’ll score major points!) If you live in the city, go to the local park and find a water fountain. Take a bunch of pennies and make wishes one at a time out loud while throwing them in Get up and watch the sunrise. Stay for the sunset too. It'll feel closely intimate when you realize you spent the whole day with each other Find a good desert recipe online, go shopping for ingredients together or have them ready if you want it to be a planned date, and bake together! If you are in a long distance relationship, grab some wine and sign-in to Skype (Don't skip on the dressy date outfits) Buy a few roses, and leave them in places you know your Valentine visits throughout the day Sit on a trampoline with a blanket and watch the stars for a while Visit the zoo or a petting zoo. Who doesn't like cute animals?! Find a winery nearby and invite your date for a day of fine wine sampling. Just remember: one of you will still have to be able to drive home safely! With a list this diverse I am sure you’ll all be able to find a cute and romantic Valentine’s Day date idea that you and your date can enjoy! And remember, this is a day dedicated to nothing but love, so whether you are spending it with your significant other, or just a few close friends, make sure to enjoy it! Understanding Politics of the United States (Part1) The United States is a federal constitutional republic, in which the President of the United States (the head of state and head of government), Congress, and judiciary share powers reserved to the national government, and the federal government shares sovereignty with the state governments. The executive branch is headed by the President and is independent of the legislature. Legislative power is vested in the two chambers of Congress, the Senate and the House of Representatives. The judicial branch (or judiciary), composed of the Supreme Court and lower federal courts, exercises judicial power (or judiciary). The judiciary's function is to interpret the United States Constitution and federal laws and regulations. This includes resolving disputes between the executive and legislative branches. The federal government's layout is explained in the Constitution. Two political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, have dominated American politics since the American Civil War, although smaller parties like the Libertarian Party and the Green Party also exist and achieve minor amounts of representation. There are major differences between the political system of the United States and that of most other developed democracies. These include greater power in the upper house of the legislature, a wider scope of power held by the Supreme Court, the separation of powers between the legislature and the executive, and the dominance of only two main parties. Third parties have less political influence in the United States than in other developed country democracies. The federal entity created by the U.S. Constitution is the dominant feature of the American governmental system. However, most people are also subject to a state government, and all are subject to various units of local government. The latter include counties, municipalities, and special districts. This multiplicity of jurisdictions reflects the country's history. The federal government was created by the states, which as colonies were established separately and governed themselves independently of the others. Units of local government were created by the colonies to efficiently carry out various state functions. As the country expanded, it admitted new states modeled on the existing ones.

American Ideology Republicanism, along with a form of classical liberalism remains the dominant ideology. Central documents include the Declaration of Independence (1776), the Constitution (1787), the Federalist Papers (1788), the Bill of Rights (1791), and Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address" (1863), among others. Even the secessionists who formed the Confederacy in 1861 believed in the same values. Among the core tenets of this ideology are the following: * Civic duty: citizens have the responsibility to understand and support the government, participate in elections, pay taxes, and perform military service. * Opposition to Political corruption. * Democracy: The government is answerable to citizens, who may change the representatives through elections. * Equality before the law: The laws should attach no special privilege to any citizen. Government officials are subject to the law just as others are. * Freedom of religion: The government can neither support nor suppress religion. * Freedom of speech: The government cannot restrict through law or action the personal, nonviolent speech of a citizen; a marketplace of ideas. At the time of the United States' founding, the economy was predominantly one of agriculture and small private businesses, and state governments left welfare issues to private or local initiative. Laissez-faire ideology was largely abandoned during the Great Depression. Between the 1930s and 1970s, fiscal policy was characterized by the Keynesian consensus, a time during which modern American liberalism dominated economic policy virtually unchallenged. Since the late 1970s and early 1980s, however, laissez-faire ideology, as explained especially by Milton Friedman, has once more become a powerful force in American politics. While the American welfare state expanded more than threefold after WWII, it has been at 20% of GDP since the late 1970s.Today, modern American liberalism, and modern American conservatism are engaged in a continuous political battle, characterized by what the Economist describes as "greater divisiveness [and] close, but bitterly fought elections.


Usage of "left–right" Politics The modern American political spectrum and the usage of "left–right politics", liberalism, and conservatism in the United States differs from the rest of the world. According to American historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. (writing in 1956), "Liberalism in the American usage has little in common with the word as used in the politics of any European country, save possibly Britain," citing the fact that American liberalism does not support classical liberalism's commitment to limited government and laissez-faire economics.[ Because those two positions are instead generally supported by American conservatives, historian Leo P. Ribuffo noted in 2011, "what Americans now call conservatism much of the world calls liberalism or neoliberalism." Though many would also attribute those principles more universally to contemporary libertarians.

Suffrage Suffrage is nearly universal for citizens 18 years of age and older. All states and the District of Columbia contribute to the electoral vote for President. However, the District, and other U.S. holdings like Puerto Rico and Guam, lack federal representation in Congress. These constituencies do not have the right to choose any political figure outside their respective areas. Each commonwealth, territory, or district can only elect a nonvoting delegate to serve in the House of Representatives. Women's suffrage became an important issue after the American Civil War. After the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified in 1870, giving African American men the right to vote, various women's groups wanted the right to vote as well. Two major interest groups were then formed. The first group was the National Woman Suffrage Association, formed by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, that wanted to work for suffrage on the federal level and to push for more governmental changes, such as the granting of property rights to married women.The second group was the American Woman Suffrage Association, formed by Lucy Stone, whose goal was to give women the right to vote. In 1890, the two groups merged to form the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). The NAWSA then mobilized to obtain support state-by-state, and by 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, giving women the right to vote. Student activism against the Vietnam War in the 1960s prompted the passage of the Twenty-sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18, and prohibited age discrimination at the voting booth.

State Government States governments have the power to make laws for all citizens that are not granted to the federal government or denied to the states in the U.S. Constitution.These include education, family law, contract law, and most crimes. Unlike the federal government, which only has those powers granted to it in the Constitution, a state government has inherent powers allowing it to act unless limited by a provision of the state or national constitution. Like the federal government, state governments have three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. The chief executive of a state is its popularly elected governor, who typically holds office for a four-year term (although in some states the term is two years). Except for Nebraska, which has unicameral legislature, all states have a bicameral legislature, with the upper house usually called the Senate and the lower house called the House of Representatives, the House of Delegates, Assembly or something similar. In most states, senators serve four-year terms, and members of the lower house serve two-year terms. The constitutions of the various states differ in some details but generally follow a pattern similar to that of the federal Constitution, including a statement of the rights of the people and a plan for organizing the government. However, state constitutions are generally more detailed.

A lavender-loving South African-turned-Laguna Beacher experiences an Under the Tuscan Sun moment in Valley Center. And the fallout is beautiful. BY REBECCA TOLIN Alicia Wolff never imagined her ocean view would be replaced by a sea of lavender. Or that she would actually own the farm outside her window. Before purchasing what is now Keys Creek Lavender Farm in Valley Center, Wolff led a fast-paced life in Laguna Beach as vicepresident of marketing for her family-owned financial services company. Business prospered, but Wolff’s love of nature called her back to the land. With grown children and a divorce behind her, in 2008 Wolf began canvassing Southern California for her own Shangri-La. When she set foot on the 8.5-acre plot tucked into a picturesque valley in northern San Diego County, she knew it was home.

“I said, ‘This is it,’” Wolff recounts over a pot of lavender tea. “It was September. Everything was brown. Nothing was pretty. I wasn’t even looking at lavender. But I saw the potential.”

One problem: Wolff had never farmed in her life. And living in the country—with nil cell phone reception or high-speed Internet—took some adjustment. Wolff boxed up her high heels, laced up her tennis shoes and strode into the business of farming. With the help of seven employees, Wolff replanted the lavender fields with 24 different varieties, from Royal Velvet to French Gray, and earned organic certification. She created a line of flower-infused products like lavender shortbread cookie scrub, and edible items including lavender jelly, honey and lemonade. Her quaint farm shop also sells lavender rose geranium lotion and hand-poured candles. That’s Wolff’s approach to the boutique farm: Every bundle of lavender is picked by hand and each guest is greeted personally by Wolff or her partner, Chris Kurisu. During bloom season, reliably May and June, guests can stop by the tea house for lavender scones, watch how flowers are distilled into essential oil, walk the lavender labyrinth or take a soap-making class. It’s becoming a popular spot for country weddings, too. “It’s like chocolate,” Wolff says. “Everyone loves it. To come see the fields in bloom is an experience people don’t expect to have in San Diego. You don’t have to go to Provence.” The hilly, flowering fields remind Wolff of a cross between France and her native South Africa. Billowy tufts of purple and green shimmer in the breeze; lavender and rosemary waft through the air; a rooster crows in the distance. These are the moments that make the financial risk and around-the-clock work worthwhile. “The harvest is a very special time for all of us. Bo-Kaap Cape Malay Kerrie Ingredients:

Directions:

1 1/2 kg boneless mutton shoulder or 1 1/2 kg boneless lamb shoulder oil 4 onions, peeled and chopped 2 -4 garlic cloves, peeled and minced 1 piece fresh gingerroot, peeled and crushed 1 tablespoon cape malay curry powder or 1 tablespoon mild curry powder, of your choice 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1/4 teaspoon salt black pepper 1 cinnamon stick 3 cloves 2 bay leaves 2 carrots, peeled and diced 250 g dried apricots, soaked in warm water and drained 2 bananas, peeled and sliced 2 tablespoons tomato paste 50 ml wine vinegar 250 ml meat stock 3 tablespoons apricot jam 3 tablespoons natural yoghurt

1. Heat the oil in a large pot or saucepan. 2. Over high heat, fry the onions and garlic, stirring continuously. Add the ginger, curry powder and all the spices and continue stirring for a minute. Season to taste with pepper and add the salt. 3. Reduce heat slightly. Add the meat and fry it until it is browned on all sides. (This may be easier if you remove the onions, garlic and ginger mixture and set them aside, then return them to the pot after the meat is browned.). 4. Add the vinegar and stock, plus all the other remaining ingredients (except the apricot jam and yoghurt). Cover. Reduce heat. Simmer over a low heat, stirring occasionally, until everything is tender, approximately 1 1/2 hours for lamb and 2 hours for mutton, maybe a little longer. 5. Stir in the apricot jam and the yoghurt a few minutes before serving. 6. Serve this curry with yellow rice and a variety of sambals and atjars.


Ingredients: 1 cup sugar, reduce to 3/4 cup if you'd prefer it less sweet 1 cup water 1 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed 1 handful raisins cold water and ice, so that you can dilute to taste Directions: 1. The secret to perfect lemonade is to make a simple syrup by dissolving the sugar in warm water so that it’s dispersed evenly instead of sinking to the bottom. So if you have a stove handy, heat the sugar and water in a small saucepan and stir until its completely dissolved; otherwise just stir very well. 2. Extract the juice from the lemons. I use my Granny’s juicer but you can do this anyway you like. 3. Pour the juice and sugar water into a jug, throw in the raisins and leave for a while, overnight if possible, to allow them to start fermenting and give it a fizz. 4. Before serving add about two cups of cold water and a bag of ice to the jug – more or less, depending on how strong you want it to be. If the lemonade is still a little sweet for anyone’s taste, chuck a slice or two of lemon into the glass.

Federal Laws

Federal laws generally apply to people living in the United States and its territories. Congress creates and passes bills. The President then signs those bills into law. Federal courts may review these laws and strike them down if they think they do not agree with the U.S. Constitution. Find Federal Laws The United States Code contains the general and permanent laws of the United States. It does not include regulations issued by executive branch agencies, decisions of federal courts, treaties, or laws enacted by state or local governments. New laws are assigned a public law number and included in the next edition of the United States Statutes at Large. You can also find new laws enacted by the current Congress before they are part of the United States Statutes at Large.

Federal Regulations

Regulations are issued by federal agencies, boards, or commissions. They explain how the agency intends to carry out a law. The Rulemaking Process Federal regulations are created through a process known as rulemaking. By law, federal agencies must consult the public when creating, modifying, or deleting rules in the Code of Federal Regulations. This is an annual publication that lists the official and complete text of federal agency regulations. Once an agency decides that a regulation needs to be added, changed, or deleted, it typically publishes a proposed rule in the Federal Register to ask the public for comments. After the agency considers public feedback and makes changes where appropriate, it then publishes a final rule in the Federal Register with a specific date for when the rule will become effective and enforceable. When the agency issues a final rule for comment, it must describe and respond to the public comments it received.

State Laws and Regulations

State laws generally apply just to people living in that state. State legislatures create and pass bills and the governor signs them into law. State courts may review these laws and remove them if they think they do not agree with the state's constitution. New Study: Does Sugar Cause Heart Disease?

Are today’s high rates of overconsumption of sodas and other sugar sources a direct cause of heart disease? It’s possible, more and more people think so, and a new study gives this idea further support. Of course, today’s study only shows statistical associations. In this study, people who consumed large amounts of sugar, for example sodas, got heart disease more often. Correlation doesn’t prove causation, so this doesn’t mean that this study has proven what is cause and effect. However, this study did demonstrate a linear association: the more sugar the greater the risk. This study is just another piece of the puzzle, and more and more people are starting to see a clear picture, and taking the health hazards stemming from excessive sugar consumption seriously. Prof. Laura Schmidt at University of California San Francisco writes in a commentary in JAMA: “We are in the midst of a paradigm shift in research on the health effects of sugar, one fueled by extremely high rates of added sugar overconsumption in the American public”. Past concerns revolved around obesity and dental caries as the main health hazards. Overconsumption of added sugars has long been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, under the old paradigm, it was assumed to be a marker for unhealthy diet or obesity. The new paradigm views sugar overconsumption as an independent risk factor in CVD as well as many other chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, and dementia—all linked to metabolic perturbations involving dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance. The new paradigm hypothesizes that sugar has adverse health effects above any purported role as “empty calories” promoting obesity. Too much sugar does not just make us fat; it can also make us sick. Requirements for importing a vehicle / vehicle parts

What are the requirements for importing a vehicle or vehicle parts? Before you decide to import a vehicle or vehicle parts into the United States, you should ensure that they conform to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. These agencies have very detailed requirements that can make importing a vehicle and or its parts difficult, if not impossible, for some vehicles that were not originally manufactured for the U.S. market. Nonconforming vehicles less than 25 years old entering the United States must be brought into compliance, exported, or destroyed. Vehicles over 25 years old are exempt from EPA and DOT requirements, although you will still need to obtain and prepare EPA and DOT paperwork to provide to a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer in order to clear your vehicle through CBP. From a CBP standpoint, you must file an entry on the vehicle. At the port of entry, CBP will complete and provide you with CBP Form 7501 which serves as evidence of the import processing by CBP. Filing an entry is initiated by declaring the vehicle and or its parts to a CBP officer when you enter the U.S. If your paperwork is in order, the officer will help you file the entry at the border. If you are not prepared, the officer may advise you to file the entry at a CBP port near your residence - however, in many cases the closest port could be 1-3 hours from your home, so it is in your best interest to be prepared to file the entry when you initially bring the vehicle into the U.S. Without a copy of the CBP entry form, you will not be able to register the vehicle in the U.S. Prior to filing your entry with CBP: -Ensure you have valid proof of ownership, which is an original certificate of title, or a certified copy of the original. Vehicle Parts will require a receipt for purchase. -Manufacturer's letter/certificate, stating that the vehicle conforms to EPA and DOT standards. Vehicle parts must also be conformed to U.S. Standards depending on the part being imported. (For example: Engine must meet EPA and a Fender must meet DOT standards) -Completed EPA form 3520-1 and DOT form HS-7. Vehicle parts will depend on the part being imported to the U.S. Note: If the vehicle has stickers on the engine (EPA) and inside the drivers-side door (DOT) stating that the car was manufactured to U.S. standards, you will not need a manufacturers letter. Some vehicles are listed by make, model, and year on the DOT and EPA web sites as conforming. If your vehicle is one of those, that would also negate the need for a manufacturer's letter. Blitzbokke Dominate at the USA Sevens, Again! On Sunday, January 26, 2014, team South Africa made us all proud to be “bokke” when they beat New Zealand for the second year in a row to win the USA Sevens rugby tournament, gaining a 14-7 victory before an announced crowd of 68,608 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was South Africa’s third USA title in four years, and the Blitzbokke moved one point ahead of New Zealand into first place in the world standings. After a tough start where New Zealand took a 7-0 lead, South Africa evened the score at the end of the first half when Branco du Preez deftly handled a pass that hit the ground, picking up the ball and scoring a try. Without fear the Blitzbokke kept pushing and scored the winner midway through the second half when Cecil Afrika passed to Werner Kok for a try. Both teams were winded as the final minutes ticked down, but Las Vegas is a place where South Africa is comfortable, and perhaps the Blitzbokke’s success there gave them an advantage against the All Blacks. It was truly an amazing tournament where each team showcased their talent and pride, but no team hit home like the “blitzbokke” did. South Africans from both near and far joined to support their players and cheer alongside their fellow countrymen. There was a sense of comradery in the stadium this year that I had never felt before, South Africans everywhere were laughing together, cheering together, sharing biltong and droewors, and reminiscing about their hometowns.
