Cruising With Critter Wow once we broke into summer it came on like gangbusters! Aside from some scary shit that Mother Nature threw at various parts of the Province in the form of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes she has been fairly good. I advised the road Captain of my plans so when they noticed I was no longer with them wouldn’t send out search parties and the plan came together. I got the business done in good time and was heading back when I met up with The Colonel and a whole crew of Royal wheel chairs and that the ride had started at Jacox HarleyCity Riders who were Davidson and ended up here. I know that one of our writers, heading to The Elora Manon was on the ride as well as a member of Milton Hog. It Legion for some reason was not an advertised event so it wasn’t assigned. Cruising With Critter warning so it came as no surprize and father and son both needed the get-away and from all reports, both thoroughly enjoyed themselves. That however, left the Niagara deliveries in limbo or potentially delayed longer than I would like so I stepped in and with the help of “Bad Bob” we were able to get them done but Sr.’s absence was noted and caused some concern with many of the stops. Not to fear, he will be back on the job this month. I really enjoyed getting out and got to see the stops and learn the run. It is a beautiful part of the Province and Bob and I had a great day. I also got to meet some great folks, some whom I hadn’t met before and familiar folks like the whacky crew down at Quinn’s in Welland who seem to have way too much time on their hands or probably more to the point, they see no good reason not to make time to have some fun and enjoy themselves while they work. That was the case when we pulled up to find them taking an impromptu ride in the great old war time side hack that had been left with them. Then there was “Kritter” down in Niagara Falls (A sweet and sexy lady who aside from her not knowing how to spell Critter was a pleasure to meet.) at Freedom Riderz a fantastic little shop right on Queen St. that has lots to look at other than Kritter. I got to visit with Jim at The Eagles Nest, check out their great store, pick up a couple of knick knack treasures for my shop and check on the well-being of Lorrie who has been having some medical challenges lately. We were happy to find out that she is putting up a Hell of a fight and is more than holding her own! Give ‘em Hell Darl’n! I still had my own routes to do and carried on into the

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 6

weekend to get them done, but I was able to bring “Black Bitch 3” into play to perform one of the major functions that I wanted her to do; deliver magazines. She performed well, was a pleasure to ride and garnered much attention along the way. My memory fails me a lot these days and I’m sure that I must have been told that Strictly V Twin was having an event that day and rolled in while in delivery mode to find Fred, Amy and Ted Hale along with their crew and a whole lot full of people and bikes and me without a camera (I keep forgetting that there is a camera on my Blackberry that would have sufficed but I never use it and didn’t even think about it until later.) I did hang around awhile and checked out some of the great deals that they were offering but I still had the rest of my deliveries to complete so I apologized for the oversight and carried on. I made it a point to swing by Jacox Harley Davidson for their Weekly Ride Night. Each week they donate the proceeds of these events to a different charity that they want to support. This night was dedicated to the Father of one of Jacox’s own employees, Ross H. Stewart who has developed the disease and the donation would be made in his honour, to a charity that is very meaningful to me The Alzheimer Society of Canada. This cruel disease claimed both my Mother and my Father and I have pledged my support to the cause and to raise money and awareness of what I call “The Demon Alzheimer” the scourge that steals the essence of man! The mind, the body, the soul and the spirit!” That may seem like over dramatization but to me it describes it accurately and the case loads of those inflicted are swelling at an alarming rate and those afflicted and their families will probably attest to its accuracy as well! Apparently I am not alone in support for this cause as there was a large contingency from a Veterans Club, The Cavalier Riders who rode in with each person donating $10.00 to the charity. They had a great live band and the barbecue was serving some fantastic burgers and hot dogs for donations (The free barbecue

Cruising With Critter incorrectly mentioned in the listing in the Mag was the result of gremlins and not my overworking of my managing editor) and a great time was had by one and all, old, young, guys or gals it is a family event and a great way to spend an evening and they were able to donate $353.20. Thanks to Jacox for a good evening and giving back to the community. I once again took to the roads to get the monthly Calendar shoot where I get to visit a shop that has been designated as The Shop/Builder of the Month and do a photo-shoot and write an article on the Shop. This Month it was Hogtown at their store located right in the heart of Lucan, a beautiful little town that was home to the infamous “Black Donnelly’s” until their untimely deaths and the subject of several books and even a song or two. Once again, I was able to borrow the daughter of one of my friends to serve as model. This month I secured the services of the ravishing “Texas”, a very pretty blonde with a great personality, a fantastic smile and other attributes that I’m sure you will appreciate and we made the long drive to Lucan on a beautiful day. Owners Mike and Teresa had picked out a few bikes for us to shoot on and we quickly got set up out in the spacious lot

at the side of the building that they call “The Hog Pen” for the shoot. I’d worked with the Hogtown Crew before when I covered their 1st Anniversary party here last year and I knew that they were great people and enjoy what they are doing and take great pride in doing it. They have great imaginations and a creative flair that is evident in the shop, the store and the building and property itself and the incredible signage that is everywhere but very tastefully done. The store is neat, clean and bright and well stocked with motorcycles clothing and accessories and has that “Real Motorcycle Shop” atmosphere to it and a friendly feel that puts “Real People” at ease. I wandered around taking pictures while Texas changed into her outfit and shirts provided by Hogtown and I talked to Teresa and Mike, getting some material on which to base my write up. It is a busy shop with a constant flow of customers who are all treated as friends by Mike, Teresa and crew. Texas was a delight to work with and the photo session went very well with a few wardrobe changes and I believe I was able to get some great shots that will make this a very popular Calendar. We took a quick lunch break up the street at a great little Irish Pub, O’Leary’s,

I was once again honoured with being able to attend The Brothers of the Blade’s Annual Daybreak Field day event that always brings me much joy in being able to witness this incredible event that involves a great deal of time and effort by the club members, their families and their supporters but produces so much happiness for everyone! I have written about this event in the past and even got to present the Club an award at The Spring Motorcycle Show this past spring. I can’t say enough good things about it or the Club as it is hard to encapsulate what happens here in words and while pictures certainly aid in the description, and I take lots, I can only print so many and they just don’t do it justice. This year I handed off my

if memory serves me correctly, that I knew from a previous visit to town served 50 and some fantastic fare, before stopping back at Hogtown to say our goodbyes and heading home. Another great day with some great people! Thanks to the fine folks at Hogtown for your kind hospitality and your continued support of The Riders Mag. Of course we went to Port Dover for Friday 13th celebrations and it was a busy place indeed and I will write further about that little adventure in its own article elsewhere in this issue.

camera and actually participated in “The Motorcycle Ride” portion of the day’s events that included modified “Biker games”, removable tattoos lovingly applied at the BOTB Tattoo Shop, Thumbelina the Clown Lady who thrilled the folks with her balloon animals and creations, a fantastic barbecue, ice cream and a wealth of smiles. I was also able to donate some t shirts that were handed out along with the “goodie bags” that Ray and Maggie Carter fill and donate each year. Again this year “Birdman” came out with a couple of his birds much to the thrill of attendees. Birdman just adores this event and has adopted it as a regular a t t e n d event, bringing with him this time a Harper hawk and a Horned owl. He has garnered a following from his much

Cruising With Critter appreciated appearances here and has even adopted Tom as his brother and protector and cemented the pairing with a gift of a Biker ring. This is a special day for these folks and their caseworkers and it is great to see smiles on faces as they share the moment with those who really love them. It is evident from the moment they arrive just bubbling with anticipation, the warm greetings as they fling themselves into the arms of these bikers who they have come to know and love over the years and in the way they feel at home here on this beautiful property. I have seen newcomers make strange at first but I have yet to see a case where they are not soon swept up in the spirit and the joy that is being experienced all around them and soon throw themselves fully into the event as if they had been coming here for years. Amanda presented Bruce with a token of their appreciation as well as a heartfelt thank you address. My trike did come in very handy particularly with some of the guests with some pretty severe physical challenges and it was a great feeling to be able to help out. Thanks to the Brothers of the Blade for all that you do. It is a special day all around.

To anyone who may have found a watch at the 81 East Toronto Show and Shine this past weekend (June 21st) the owner has contacted me and would like to offer a reward for its return as it has strong sentimental value. Please contact me at 905-235-5353.

Port Dover Friday 13th 2014

These events just tend to creep up and bite me in the ass! I know they are coming and try my best to get everything in order and have everything fall in place but I’ve just got too much going on and find myself scrambling at the last minute to get it done and it just drives me crazy! That isn’t much of a drive anymore, but rather, a short putt. I used to be able to juggle things or Multi task (the term they use now.), that just means keeping all the balls in the air at the same time. These days if there is more than one ball that needs to be juggled they will end up bouncing around my feet. Not that I’m proud of my floundering or deteriorating organizational skills but I have to face reality and have to accept the fact that I’m not the man I once was and the job can be overwhelming at times.

This was the case of my Port Dover Friday 13th 2014 experience. There are many out there who think that I have the best job around and spend my time just riding around the Province on my motorcycles, taking pictures of half-naked women and nice looking motorcycles, drinking 50 and just living the dream. It used to be kind of that simple when I was just plain Critter and would show up at shows, Port Dover and the like and get things done, usually with Alex Sr. and whatever crew we had and leave the planning to JR. There were times when I wished that I had more control of certain things but it all worked out in the end. Now that I’m the guy in charge I find the stress levels of doing these things along with co-ordinating the day to day running of the Mag just a tad too much but, as before, things all worked out in the end, thanks to a lot of help from my friends! I was determined to take the new trike to Port Dover this time but roadblocks and hurdles just kept popping up at an astonishing rate and just when I thought I had one problem solved three more would come out of nowhere to take its place! The chain on the trike broke and we sorted through that thanks to Josh’s efforts and it was back on the road in time and would make the trip. This trike design was experimental and I knew that we would just have to sort things out as things occurred and we figured chain in the drive line may be an issue. We had to extend the wheelbase to allow for load distribution as I needed to be able to haul significant weight and went with the chain, as it offered the cheapest and quickest solution (Keeping my dwindling budget in mind.) in order to get it on the road. I also knew that the large wooden box (Crafted so skillfully by my buddy Dusty.) on the back wasn’t the most aerodynamic structure and would certainly cause some wind drag but it was what I wanted and it looks fantastic and until you actu-

the perfect spot for Sr. to park his truck. We now went to pick up the Mags and get Sr. located in his spot before they closed off the streets to vehicles other than motorcycles. It all went slicker than snot through a hen’s beak and I was really starting to feel relaxed now and we settled into a great breakfast at The Dairy where we ran into an old friend Samson who shared his table with us and we engaged in some good conversation over a great meal. We got back to The Royal bank and carried the Mags out to the street and Sr. got settled into his chair and into distribution mode and we were ready for action. The sky was overcast and there was a chill in the air but is was still good and better than blazing sun and soaring temperatures, rain (Although we did get a brief sprinkling that didn’t have any effect on the crowds that came to town) and a bunch of other conditions that I could mention that have occurred at other Friday 13th’s. Things were pretty busy even at this early hour and 304518

ally roll down the road with it you can’t really tell how it will work out. We will sort out the bugs as we go and may well go back to a belt drive and get a custom belt made, but for now we are rolling! But it wasn’t helping in my struggle to get it to Port Dover, reducing my stress levels, or making sleep come any easier. Now it was getting everything to Dover in time and have all the pieces fall into place with all the moving parts that at times didn’t want to mesh, co-ordinate, or even form anything that closely resembled a plan and getting it all to come together in harmony and cohesiveness that was still the issue. Thank God for rum and understanding friends! In the end, the Mags found their way to town thanks to the efforts of my buddy/delivery guy/accountant/a bunch of other stuff, Greg and his lovely bride Jean and I was just left with the problem of passes and where everybody would meet and getting the t shirts to town. Motorcyco Beau got the shirts printed and shipped to me and we now faced the problem of loading them on the trike. It has a large box and I knew how many bundles of Mags it can carry but we had no idea how many t shirts it would carry. Thursday morning and it was time to leave, I packed and unpacked, folded and refolded, squished and squashed and was having trouble getting the four large boxes of shirts into that large (But not quite large enough.) wooden box. Funny thing about space, when something like a room, is empty, it looks like it is huge until you start to put furniture in, then you usually have to rethink how best to use that space. Dangerous Doug and his lady “Tuesday” (Who would be accompanying me to Dover) arrived, Managing editor Al came out and he along with Godzilla and Tuesday, under Doug’s scrutiny and direction were able to get everything squeezed in or bagged and wrapped and loaded, although my bag of personal items and clothing changes was unpacked reduced to what could be crammed into whatever nooks and crannies we could find. Anything else was categorized as items that I wouldn’t be needing or could be bought when space became available and the need arose. We made it to Port Dover without further incident and I sought out Sr. and JR at the cottage where I left the trike and rode into town with them for dinner at Captain Billy’s and so I could hook up with Greg and Jean and determine where all the Mags would be in the morning. Jean and I delivered Mags to all our usual spots; Angelo’s, The Norfolk, Captain Billy’s, On the Fringe and Clare’s and I found the spot that they had arranged to leave the Mags overnight, before reuniting with JR and Sr. and returning to the cottage. The plan was slowly coming together I was starting to unwind and relax a bit, then a gab session with Lady Janie involving large quantities of rum for me and Corona for her that lasted into the wee hours resulted in a short but decent sleep. Up early, I followed Sr. into town and I parked the trike at our usual base of operations, in front of The Royal Bank where Bad Bob was waiting with the news that he had found

there were no more and I had to take off to get some shots from around Town as I remembered that I had foolishly assigned the duties of writing up the event to myself! So I left our happy crew with the t-shirt detail and wandered off through the crowds that had now swelled to what may be record setting levels. (I don’t know what the official guess at how many were in Dover on that day, but based on my scientific methods and calculations my unofficial estimate is lots!) I wormed my way through the crowds of all the usual suspects of real bikers, pretend bikers and weekend warriors, posers and pretenders, tourists, gawkers and hawkers, residents some who love the event and welcome it and come out to join in and some that hate it and try to avoid the onslaught of bikers, and lots and lots of Police who seem to have tamed down their attitudes while their numbers increase. It is what it is and there is a noticeable change in who is where, when. Thursdays have taken to being a whole lot busier now as well. For me, it can be a slow trip to get to anywhere down here and not just due to the crowds but there were tons of people I knew, or knew me and I ran into friends and advertisers along the way, like Rod from Wizards Specialized Appearance Products who had a display of his incredible products set up and was busy doing demonstrations when I went by but waved hello and when you stop and talk here and there all the way, time passes quickly. I’ve just grown to accept it and try to factor “gab time” into my travels. My new knee was getting a real work out but held up well under the strain and seems to have passed the tests with flying colours. I tried to get by and see all of our advertisers at some point and did make it to see Trish at Brass Pole as she has gotten in some fantastic new lines of great looking products that I wanted to check out and squeezed in a hug and a quick conversation in between sales as she and her whole crew were incredibly busy. That is a good thing! Some stores and vendors like On the Fringe were just packed with people which is usual for that fine shop with the much sought after leather goods, clothing items and of course Port Dover, Friday 13th t shirts and I couldn’t get in to see Elana.

Port Dover Friday 13th 2014

I made several attempts at it as the flow of the crowds swept me right past the doors as well as those of of Jungle Heat hot sauce and I was unable to get in and get my bottle of special limited edition “Friday 13th Hot Sauce.” I made my way down the street to where Mike and Teresa and the Hog Town Crew had set up a great display of many of their bikes and they had the lovely Leila (A beautiful young lady and model, whom I was able to put them in contact with.) was attracting a lot of attention. I had her pose on various bikes and the crowds stated to form but grew even larger after she changed into a more revealing outfit and a bike was moved out front and centre. It was a great time and I’m sure that you will see Leila appearing on these pages again in the future. I made it over to Clare’s to see Richard and Gail at their fantastic store that was also packed both inside and out where Harley-Davison had their usual great display. I ran into the always smiling and affable John Clare and got to talk awhile before heading back up to where the rest of the crew was waiting and they had been joined by JR and my drinking buddy Janie who was looking none the worse for wear!

Janie and I made our way up the street to Angelo’s with arm loads of t-shirts while JR armed with his camera and a variety of old ladies boob shirts and new t-shirts, remained with his bike on the street. His usual spot out at the centre lane was unavailable this year as they didn’t allow it here this year and were actually enforcing it this time. We were also joined by Jonathan and his lady Donna and Mr. Mike our other cartoonist and illustrator and our happy gang made our way down to the Erie Beach for another of their fine meals that always leaves me longing to come back. It was time to call it a day and I followed JR and Janie back to the cot-t a g e where some drinks and conversation that saw Sr. and Janie retire early leaving JR and I to sit out and talk and that eased me into a really relaxed state that I hadn’t felt for quite a while and the knowledge that another Friday the 13th was behind us when we declared an end to the session. The expression; “All’s well that ends well.” had significant meaning for me and I had a great sleep. Thanks to the whole crew for getting me through it, to all of our wonderful readers who make us feel appreciated and to our advertisers who make it all possible!

Fort Erie Motorcycle Swap Meet 2014 was set up in a different spot than where he usually works out of but he was happier with this location and having the additional help worked well for him too! This place can be a treasure trove of both old and new parts and there were lots of great deals to be had and judging from the constant flow of parts going out the door and the smiles on faces I would surmise that many found what they were looking for. I know I managed to get a couple of items that I was looking for. Pamela the T Shirt Girl was set up with her great looking clothing items and it is always a pleasure to see her and her companion Trapper! The crew from Eagles Nest seemed to be having a ball as usual and I had to stop by for a chat and to check on Lorrie’s condition and was pleased to hear that she is doing quite well. I also ran into Bob and Mel from Full Throttle in Fenelon Falls which wasn’t a great surprise as they always come here and do well and there are many others who are also mainstay vendors like Ken and Kathy MacDonald. There are many attendees that are regulars here at this show and they come from miles away. This isn’t just for locals. Bargains are bargains but finding the part is the real

prize and there is a good chance that you will find it here. That is why there are huge line ups at the door and people swarm in to get whatever edge you can. At these shows an important rule to remember if you are looking for a hard to find part if you find it buy it and don’t dicker too long because someone else will snap it up. I’ve seen guys find a part that they have been searching for and figure that they will look around to see if they can do better at another booth and when that failed come back to find that it has been sold. I’ve seen guys bury the item under other stuff not thinking that others won’t dig! They do dig! THE SNOOZE YOU LOSE RULE APPLIES! The show was expanded this year adding other rooms and hallways to the show and Shawn already has thoughts on how to improve the flow and repositioning of vendors and trying a few ither things to make next year’s event even better! Anyhow we had a great time as did everyone else I talked to. I hope to see you all back again next year to see what great things that Shawn and company have in store for you. From what I’ve been told so far, you won’t be disappointed! Watch your Riders Mag for updates!

INFO 519-323-1570 rclmtforest134@wightman.ca www.mountforestfireworks.ca I’M BACK !! Yes - for those of you who secretly hoped I’d drowned in our frog pond, or dug a hole in the garden at our cottage and buried myself in it, I have (instead) been taking time off writing. Yes I still ride, yes it’s still the 2008 105th anniversary Ultra Classic I won at the Lions Fenwick Biketoberfest from that year. I jumped at the chance to write again, when the roving reporter, from the wilds of Newmarket, asked me to write the Choppers Custom Works open house, and I will also be doing the story on Choppers’ ride out of Selkirk the day after Port Dover Friday 13th. I wouldn’t doubt that Critter would ride to Selkirk, from the north of Newmarket (proving he’ll do that when he shot the Choppers pictures for one of the first custom bike build shops to show on the new Rider’s Mag open out calendar). By the way, I hope you’ve looked up the Rider’s Mag online, and found that

the experience is vastly changed since Critter took over - you can read the whole thing online, in colour! So when you find yourself in some remote part of the world, and want the flavor of home, just look the mag up online. SO, here we are, back in Selkirk, where all of my stories begin. My cottage is on the lake front, about 5 minutes ride from the center of town, with it’s flashing red light that holds traffic for almost a second, before heading off again towards Port Dover, or Dunnville. Selkirk isn’t as sleepy a little town as one would imagine - there’s a lot of traffic that passes through, and the Sunflower restaurant traps a certain number of people with good food and drink, there’s always someone who needs money from the CIBC, the Town & Country LCBO general store always has a steady flow of people through it, and for the last year, Choppers Custom Works, combined with Art Rocks Gallery & Gift Ware is another place for people to park in front of, and investigate. Hopefully, the big signs for Choppers, Selkirk, will be out, for the riders who took the road from Cayuga, through to Jarvis, and down Hwy 6 to Port Dover for the 13th. Hopefully also, if you were on that route, you saw the big signs, and decided to detour closer to the lake to stop in and see Tom and Audrey O’Marra at Choppers. The lakeshore road through Nanticoke is very nice, winding route that ends in Port Dover - a much nicer ride than speeding through to Jarvis. Tom’s got his license to buy, and sell bikes now (there was a while where the government was taking it’s time), and the workshop, at the back of the shop, allows him the ability to work on bikes, when it’s slow, then change hats when customers turn up. I’ve got a couple of shots showing his other two work shops, and the guys who wrench with him. Audrey’s side of the shop is all about gifts, and clothes. Her side has a number of motorcycles taking space, and caters to the motorcycling community, with motorcycle giftware, but there’s plenty more to buy than just Harley hats, shirts, mugs, and Harley jewelry - it’s a gift store, there’s paintings, and prints, having nothing to do with bikes, signs, and skincare products, wall hangings, blouses, tops, and dresses. Theresa (Mike’s wife) was on hand helping here,

and anywhere she was needed. Together, Tom and Audrey have a lot more planned for the store, but everything takes time, and money. Outside, bright, lime green pick nick tables allow the weary traveler to sit, and rest, before continuing on with the journey. Tom was born in Dunnville, met Audrey at a grade 8 dance, and in 1980 (many years later) married her. Tom’s always been a mechanic, more interested in cars in the beginning, but changed to bikes a good 20 - 25 years ago. When he has more time, in the winter, he builds custom motorcycles, and says he can do one in about a week, it depends how fast all the pieces come in. Besides the store, he’s got the use of his brother’s modern, heated barn just down the road from the store, and across from that, his own modern work shop was built about 3 years ago. Of course, with two company work shops (besides the store) there’s much higher taxes, and insurance on those home facilities, but there’s such a demand for his skills that he can’t move all the jobs up to the store. On the night before the open house, he was out in his shop, working on a bike until after midnight, and was up early that morning to put the finishing touches on the store for the open house. He has the equipment, and know how, to work on any year Harley Davidson, and has a well thought of name for the work he’s done (nobody has a bad word to say about him, his work, his prices, or speed in doing the job). Tom will take a pan head apart to fix the problem, just as expertly as he will ground up weld a custom chopper around a frame, and send it to expert paint – you really need to talk to him. He doesn’t charge what the Harley dealerships are required to bill for the hours on the job they do, he’s way more in touch with the strain on your wallet. He has the customized open trailer that will pneumatically drop to the road, allowing a bike to be pushed on, at ground level, and he has the closed trailer as well. His mechanics, working on the Harleys, are his sons Joe, and Mike, wrenching along side him, when they can, Craig Frith does the general work, and his mechanic doing everything metric is Aaron Desrochers. He’s got a tame custom painter who sprays anything but tame subjects to a bike. Tom sells anything Drag Specialties, anything Mid-USA, Kuryakyn, Custom Chrome, Rinehart, he has every make of oil, there’s frames, fenders, front ends,

forks, billet aluminum and spoke wheels, tires, helmets, and cleaning supplies. He’s got all the up to date parts books, if you think you saw it somewhere, and want it on your bike, he can find it, get it for you, and install it. One really never knows how many people are going to turn up for any motorcycle happening. The weather can be perfect, but it takes bikers who don’t have prior commitments to make the happening an event. Hopefully you’ll get to the ride, planned on June 14th, but the “Sweet Cheeks” Custom Chopper cake won’t be on offer (like it was for open house). Probably the 5 gallons of Tim Hortons coffee won’t be there either - best think to head across the road for coffee. Selkirk is one of these places that accepts motorcycles lined on either side of the road for as far as the eye can see, and with your help, we’ll have seen that happen this year. Come on down next year.

The place was Rockin’ and Clubs from near and far were well represented. They set up large tables to handle the tray after tray of an excellent buffet dinner. the pavement at about 15:00 hrs and continued, in various stages of intensity, all afternoon and into the evening. Those of you that know me are aware that I live quite a distance east of Hamilton. And although Storm offered me his hospitality, I opted to tough it out and push on to Picton. It was, at times, a MF due to high cross winds but the Zombie devoured the kilometers, hung tight on the curves, and breezed the straights during four hours of high-speed motion. Over my many years of building & riding street machines, this Fat Bagger is the best daily runner of the bunch. During that large span of life, I’ve enjoyed English, Japanese, German, and American others (including Indian) but the standouts that delivered the best service, soul, and pride in ownership were definitely my Hogs (excluding, of course, the AMF built HD’s). This month’s feature OCC club is the Avanca Riders R.C. Located in Burlington Ontario, the core group began riding together in May 2008. The club was organized in the fall of 2013 as a brotherhood whose common interest was the solace found in the passion of rollin’ two big wheels. The club is a family- oriented group based on traditional biker values. ARRC is the club acronym which stands for; adventure, respect, relentless, and commitment. The outcome of the Ontario election 2014 was a total shocker to many pundits, me included. In the last few days of the campaign, the choices basically were – which future assault on the populace would violate the least? IMHO, the eventual choice of governorship holds zero advantages for the bikers of Ontario. Been there – done the photo-op - got the message! This is familiar ground but it would have been a refreshing change to have a sympathetic ear at Queens Park but that’s my wet dream, Eh Ollie? C’est la Vie! Ok, Ok, I’ll stop bawlin’ in my beer and get over it but I have one final observation then I’m off to another topic . . . the one bright & shining surprise of the day was that voter turnout was the highest (over 52%) in twenty years and it was encouraging to note that many of our young voters turned out to exercise their democratic right. Every year, The Ontario Confederation of Clubs holds a Unity Ride to demonstrate to the general population that the media/law enforcement reports heralding an impending biker war are bogus, unfounded and without merit. The ride takes place on June 21st but I cannot report on it cuz my deadline is before the ride date. Stay tuned cuz it’s on my list to scribe an article (with pics) for our next issue. Soooo, howz yur ridin’ season goin’ so far? The rain has been extensive and, at times, downright mean & nasty due to higher than normal thunderstorm activity. Myself, Speed & Hypa Dog hooked up with the Amigos R.C and rolled to the Red Devils M.C. Show & Shine. Somewhere, on the back roads around Campbellville, the procession was jacked by Halton Regional Police who attended in force – four cars, one motorcycle & the Stupervisor SUV. No charges were laid (even though some of us were running illegal gear etc.) but all personal info on the individuals in our group was duly noted. Don’t know WTF they do with this info but no pics were taken except by our people. After forty minutes of boring banter – the group was back on the road. About the S&S . . . I won’t go into the details about the event as I spent some time there with my Bro & publisher, Critter – who was busy snappin’ & schmoozin’ while create a detailed report for this issue. The good ones make it look easy, Eh Ollie? After spending some quality time at the happening, our group split (under ever-darkening skies) to feast at a special Porto restaurant in downtown Hammer. Motor Cycle Enhancements Customer Day 2014 The weather forecasts were bleak to say the least and I was wondering if they might get rained out. I had wanted to take my new Trike to this event but it wasn’t quite ready for the road just yet and Petoonia had a pout on I guess at the new bike that now shares the garage with her and she refused to start so I loaded my gear into The Black Bitch and headed out through heavy winds and intermittent rain that was quite heavy at times to cover

Motorcycle Enhancements Customer appreciation day. For a while the weather seemed to let up then it would start again and that was how it went right up until I got near Oakville where it let up altogether and when I pulled in the driveway and noticed that they had things set up and were going ahead with things. I parked my truck up in the front lot walked down the long drive to where Cassandra was rushing around getting things going. She informed me that they had about twenty bikes show up despite the weather and the poker run had gotten underway. One of the challenges that seemed to be facing them was weighting down the canopies that would protect the food and the barbecue masters from the elements from blowing away. They eventually found enough heavy stuff which they secured to the legs of the canopies with Red Green’s favourite weapon…..duct tape. It wasn’t pretty but it was effective. A good sized crowd was milling around outside and through the shop munching on Tim Horton’s donuts and hot coffee and I joined them wandering through the shop and getting pictures here and there. John has developed a large and loyal customer base and is very active in the

community and does a lot of charity work and they in turn, come out to support him in many of his endeavors. This is one busy shop and there was no shortage of bikes being worked on. They work on all types of bikes here Harley, Metric, sport bikes and everything and anything so there is a good mix in the people who come out to participate and enjoy the day. It is a friendly bunch and I was getting along well, checking out the work that has been done to the bikes both in the shop and out in the parking lot. I was introduced to the models that had been hired to do the bike wash which didn’t happen due to the weather and we wandered around together to get their pictures posed on many of the bikes throughout the afternoon. They had other participants as well as Todd who owns The Auto Spa and his a huge supporter was out helping out and running the Twoonie Toss, and there was a lovely lady who runs a riding school accompanied by her gorgeous dog and some ladies had a table full of great looking jewelry that seemed to attract a lot of attention. The barbecues were soon fired up to be ready when those on the poker run returned the wind was plaguing the chefs and assistant chefs as things kept blowing away but these folks were on their game and got things under control. Soon the intrepid souls who had gone on the ride roared into the lot lead by John with his best friend “Panda” decked out in helmet and goggles settled comfortably in

Motor Cycle Enhancements Customer Day 2014 the sidecar on John’s Bike. Panda always gets a lot of attention because he is an amazing dog but in the sidecar he is Shop ambassador and will draw a crowd wherever he goes. It was the same now as the models now all wanted to get in a picture with Panda and he was more than happy to oblige but the smell of barbecue was distracting even for a superstar dog and the celebrity stuff could wait until after snack time. They had a real nice spread with burgers and hot dogs and a great selection of salads and hungry souls dug in and satisfied their hunger while taking in some of the entertainment. There was a Toonie toss where participants would toss a toonie across the floor towards several bottles of liquor with the coin closest to the bottle winning the bottle and the coins that didn’t win would be collected and go to the charity. They did the Show and Shine awards and the 50/50 draw which saw the winner generously donating his winnings back to

the charity. They had lots of door prizes which saw most everyone walk away with something. Ride for Dad is one of the charities that John and Motorcycle Enhancements Supports and they were there with their ambulance to raise awareness for their Ride on June 14th and support John’s event as well. Rumours of free rectal exams being performed in the back of the ambulance were debunked. Due to the weather attendance was down but they were still able to raise $2000.00 for charity. John and Motorcycle Enhancements like to be a big part of the Community and like to give back. It was now starting to rain in earnest and I called it a day, said my goodbyes and heading for my truck, leaving this great bunch of folks to pitch Toonies at bottles and just have a ball. Great job! Good day! Let’s do it again next year! Hope for better weather.

On The Ok, another busy month has whizzed by and a visit to Port Dover for this year’s only Friday the 13th, thanks to all the ladies who flashed for us along Main Street, I have run out of ladies shirts. I had a few from a lot of different events over the years and have moved them all now so we need some new ladies shirts so I am trying to find some sponsors to print up a couple hundred new ladies shirts so we can show them our appreciation. So if I could find a couple of our fine advertisers who can dig into their pockets and come up with a couple hundred bucks each we can get this done. I know the price of shirts has gone up. The spaghetti straps have got a little more pricey so maybe we do like 50 spaghettis and 50 lady t’s or

crop tops or beaters or sumthin. I’m thinkin say $2.50 to $3.00 a shirt for sponsors, if we do a hundred that works out to $250 - $300 to sponsor our ladies and the fine show they put on for us each and every Friday the 13th and a few other favorites over the summer so I’d like to hear from some of you guys who can give a little back and lets figure this out, so next year its February, March and November. It’s one them cold month years so that should work for the whole year and we don’t need any money until the fall ok? Say October and I’ll get this thing done. Call me or email me, I am all over the place busy so if you call leave a message and I’ll get back but sending me an email is good cause I get my email on my phone so its quick. 905-631-5890 in the office and theridersmag@gmail.com on the email, thanks in advance for your support, look forward to talking to you. Alright I haven’t had a chance to get to too many events this year and my schedule is still pretty hectic but I hope to catch a few and maybe a few Niagara region feature shoot trips if we can get our schedules synced up. We are gonna hit the road early this fall hopefully by the end of September to do some shoots around the Toronto area, I got a good load of bikes so all youse who are on the list watch your email I will be trying to get as many available as possible hoping for three a day on the weekend. I am always looking around for vintage bikes they are the least common so if you have an old Harley with a good story send us a pic and we’ll take care of ya next year and as for all the other classes, we are booking for next year too so there will be a southwest trip in the spring and also the tri city area, and of course if you wanna ride to us that makes it a bit quicker. That’s it for this month, talk to you all next month and hopefully I’ll see you out there, on the road.

PIERRETTE “PEE WEE” MERRITT By Jeff Burgess MEMORIAL RUN

First off I’d like to thank Critter for giving the ball to me to cover this run. Pee Wee and her mate John Lacroix (a founding member of the NBS Riders) have been dear friends for many, many years. Also, Port Colborne is my home town and I could meet with some Brothers from the good “old days” (15 years ago). The plan was to get to leave Toronto and get to Port Colborne at about 7 PM, check into our motel, have a short visit with friends and get a good night’s rest before the ride. (wrong)! As I was checking in, a familiar voice rang through the lobby. I heard “You rode a big white bike now, I knew it was you”. I turned from the desk “Tiger” Williams (an old Bud) and past president of the Port Legion Br.56 ordered me and my wife Gerrie “throw your stuff in your room, you’re coming with me.” So here we were, kidnapped and chauffeured to Tiger’s house only to be met by John Lacroix and preceded to reminisce about Pee Wee and John’s life over the years. I found out we lost Pierrette early last December after a short but fierce battle with brain cancer. After several beverages, John dropped us off at the motel at about 3 AM with a “see you in the morning”. By the way thanks to Tiger and his lovely wife’s hospitality, Gerrie & I want to thank you Tiger for the morning hangover. Saturday morning turned out a beautiful day. Sunny and warm day as we pulled into the Royal Canadian Legion (Br. 56) at about 11 AM. There were already tons of bikes parked down the street as breakfast was being served from 9 am to 11 am. Bikes just kept coming and coming, totalling at 75 bikes. (a number which clearly shows how much Pee Wee was loved). Around noon, Captain “Juice” from the NBS riders shouted we’re out of here and gave his blockers instructions.

After a meandering ride though Niagara on top of the escarpment, the hoard dropped down the escarpment to the Beamsville Legion. There I picked another dismal card, shot the shit and had a beverage. Then it was stands up and out. Choosing to catch some pics of the crew leaving myself, wife and crew of two from TO, took the fast route to the beautiful Legion in Chippawa. We were there before the ride came in giving me the chance for more shots coming in, yet another dismal card and a beverage. It was off on another meandering cruise to the Legion in downtown Ridgeway (just down the road from Fort Erie swap meet location). My next card was just as bad, another cold beverage and it was off again to the final destination, back to the Br.56 Legion. As we pulled in, the band Dunn (a local favourite) was already playing. The Legion had a BBQ going and the festivities carried on throughout the evening. Slides of Pee Wee life were being shown inside. Prizes were drawn, there were 60 door prizes, 50/50 draws, draw for a cool leather jacket, a large mystery basket, spa package plus the poker hand. Needless to say everybody must have gone home with something. After the feast of burgers, dogs, sausages and fries were wrapped up. The band finished and smiling faces all around. I drew the conclusion that everybody had a great day of riding and celebrating Pee Wee’s life. She will be missed by all G.B.N.F. The top winners for the Poker draw were: Terry Doan, John Lacroix and Magan Kennedy (still looking for you, get in touch with them) Spa package (donated by Taps Bar & Grill) Judy Hill Mystery basket: Ryan Schooley Leather jacket: Lorrie (Lu) Eves Thank you NBS riders & the Royal Canadian Legion Br.56 and everybody who helped make this a spectacular ride. The Pee Wee Merritt Memorial Ride will continue next year on about the same date, don’t miss it. We will miss you Pee Wee

A blonde man is in jail. Guard looks in his cell and sees him hanging by his feet. “Just WHAT are you doing?” he asks. “Hanging myself,” the blonde replies. “It should be around your neck” says the guard. “I tried that,” he replies, “but then I couldn’t breathe”. An Italian tourist asks a blonde man: “Why do Scuba divers always fall backwards off their boats?” To which the blonde man replies: “If they fell forward, they’d still be in the boat.” Police work must be entertaining as well as dangerous. Recently, a female police officer arrested Patrick Lawrence, a 22 year old white male, fornicating with a pumpkin in the middle of the night. The next day, at the Gwinntt County (GA) courthouse, Lawrence was charged with lewd and lascivious behaviour, public indecency and public intoxication. The suspect explained that as he was passing a pumpkin patch on his way home from a drinking session when he decided to stop, ‘You know how a pumpkin is soft and squishy inside, and there was no one around for miles or at least I thought there wasn’t anyone around’ he stated. Lawrence went on to say that he pulled over to the side of the road, picked out a pumpkin that he felt was appropriate to his purpose, cut a hole in it, and proceeded to satisfy his pressing need. ‘Guess I was really into it, you know?’ he commented with evident embarrassment. In the process of doing the deed, Lawrence failed to notice an approaching police car and was unaware of his audience until Officer Brenda Taylor approached the side of his car. ‘It was an unusual situation, that’s for sure,’ said Officer Taylor. ‘I walked up to Lawrence and he’s just banging away at this pumpkin.’ Officer Taylor went on to describe what happened when she approached Lawrence . ‘I said: ‘Excuse me sir, but do you realize that you’re having sex with a pumpkin?’ He froze and was clearly very surprised that I was there, and then he looked me straight in the face and said: ‘A pumpkin? Shit ... is it midnight already?’ The court (and the judge) could not contain their mirth. The Washington Post wrote an article describing this as: ‘Best comeback line ever.’

The blonde replies, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to Toronto and I’m staying right here.” The co-pilot tells the pilot that he probably should have the police waiting when they land to arrest this blonde woman, who won’t listen to reason. The pilot says, “You say she is a blonde? I’ll handle this, I’m married to a blonde. I speak blonde.” He goes back to the blonde and whispers in her ear, And she says, “Oh, I’m sorry.” and gets up and goes back to her seat in economy. The flight attendant and co-pilot are amazed and asked him what he said to make her move without any fuss. “I told her, “first class isn’t going to Toronto “.

A salesman goes up to a house and knocks on the front door. It is opened by a little ten year-old boy who has a lighted cigar in one hand, a glass of whiskey in the other and a Penthouse magazine tucked under his arm. Salesman: “Hello son. Is your mom or dad home ?” Little boy: “What the fuck do you think?” A plane is on its way to Toronto , when a blonde in Economy class gets up, and moves to the first class Section and sits down. The flight attendant watches her do this, and asks to see her ticket. She then tells the blonde that she paid for economy class, and that she will have to sit in the back. The blonde replies, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to Toronto and I’m staying right here.” The flight attendant goes into the cockpit and tells the pilot and the co-pilot that there is a blonde bimbo sitting in first class, that belongs in economy, and won’t move back to her seat. The co-pilot goes back to the blonde and tries to explain that be-

Hogtown Cycles was born out of an overwhelming passion for motorcycles, HarleyDavidson motorcycles to be specific that had taken a firm hold of Mike Koricina and his wife Teresa for years. That passion would be nurtured, and grow even stronger and would eventually transform their lives and their livelihood from working on Trucks to Motorcycle shop owners. The business has prospered and grown in the relatively short time that they have been in existence because the owners and staff know how to treat people and how to deliver solid, trustworthy sales and service. They don’t just

beautiful downtown Lucan for over 40 years and had sat empty for six or seven years, other than for storage was available and the couple knew immediately that it would be the perfect place to launch their new business. Mike and Teresa bought the building and threw themselves “Whole Hog” into Hogtown. They did some major renovations and cleanup to the building itself and the property and transformed it into a place that they and the Community can look on with pride! They love the location and from the moment they opened

sell motorcycles and a lifestyle but they live it and they ride and can identify with riders and try to treat people as they would like to be treated. Mike Koricina is a licensed diesel, automotive and motorcycle mechanic and up until a couple of years ago, owned and operated a successful automotive shop simply called “The Shop” just outside Lucan, that dealt mostly in servicing Heavy Trucks. He also sold and serviced motorcycles in the back of the shop and was gaining a reputation of not only being a good, reliable source for quality used bikes but a good and trustworthy wrench! In the Motorcycle Community, reputation is everything. The word spread and what was just a sideline had grown to the point where the bulk of his business was now motorcycles and it was evident that a change in business strategy and focus may be in order. A 5,000 square foot building that had housed a hardware store right in

the doors in May of 2012 business flooded in, they knew that they had made the right decision, both from a business and a personal perspective. It is truly a family business, as they, along with son Matt (Also a licensed mechanic) provide a full range of services to a variety of motorcycles but prefer to specialize in Harley-Davidson. Daughters; Nicole, Michelle, Kate and Allison help out when and where they can. Hogtown is more than sales and service on motorcycles as they sell a full line of parts and accessories from the World’s top suppliers, motorcycle helmets, clothing, etc. from their bright, modern and well lit and laid out showroom that is indicative of their true love of motorcycles and is wall to wall with products, collectables, memorabilia, novelty and nostalgic items that will keep you busy and in awe throughout your entire visit here. the result of a brainstorming session between Mike and Teresa (They are not saying if Alcohol was or wasn’t involved in the session or not.) but it was a hit and seems like it has become part of the program now as it will be round 2 this June 20th. The Hogtown Family is readying for their 2nd Anniversary Open House and Baconfest Sponsored by 98.1 FREE FM and Powered by Hogtown Cycles on July 12th where they will have live entertainment featuring The Geoff Masse Band, Bikini Bike washes by The University of Western Ontario Cheerleaders, vendors, door prizes and much more. Come on out and have a ball! For Mike and Teresa, business is fun but they love their motorcycle and the love to ride and aren’t afraid to take it out on the road and they travel extensively both for personal trips to spots like Daytona, Sturgis and on into California and to promote their business and participate at various Shows and events throughout the Province like The Supershow in Toronto and recently at Port Dover where they had huge displays of their bikes and other promotional products set up. They have found that their aggressive approach to advertising and promotion has proved effective as business has been growing steadily and they have shipped motorcycles to satisfied customers all over the Country such as Nova Scotia, Ottawa and Thunder Bay. People will travel in search of the right bike for the right price and for many the search ends at Hogtown and as word spreads many start and finish their search right here. Route yourselves to the beautiful town of Lucan sometime and stop in to the great looking orange and black building, right on Main St. and check out some wonderful people with some great products to sell. You will be glad you did!

The Babygirl

This month’s feature guy is Ian from Ancaster and his heavily customized 2006 Softail Deluxe began as a desire that burnt through a marriage where he rode a 1995 sportster belonging to his brother. His brother had purchased the sportster 2 years old but never actually road it and Ian took full advantage riding the bike until his brother decided to sell it. Ian was in the midst of his divorce and had seen the 2005 version in a local dealership and was able to source a black and white model at a dealer near work and once the deposit was paid and the bike was en route he started collecting up the shiny pieces from the dealer to be added to the bike when it was p.d.i.’d before delivery. Ian says that his obsession with this bike that he fondly refers to as “Babygirl” didn’t end with the accessories that he had bought before the bike was delivered saying that he quickly found out that H-D

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 36

stands for “hundreds of dollars” but that did not deter him from pursuing the pure retro themed look that he was going for adding a set of beach bars 36” wide to replace the stock bars and following that up by replacing the standard headlight system with the freight train headlight setup. In a continued pursuit of that total retro look after riding a season with his beach bars, Ian discarded them in favour of a set of 16” apes, he felt that he had achieved the look that he was going for and had been riding extensively throughout

The Babygirl

the local environs of Ontario as well as upstate New York and Northern Pennsylvania specifically in the Erie area saying the Roar on the shore is an event that he has visited as well. Ian says that a friend of his had been inspired to build a bike of his own and that as his inspiration had left him he picked up a few pieces from his buddies rolling chassis that he had decided to sell saying that the wide tire kit for the back of the softail had been purchased and the swingarm was in his buddies possession but the wheels were still at the plant awaiting his instructions as to what sort of color to apply to the wire wheels, the initial plan his pal had was to chrome the rims. Ian had done a lot of work on his bike over the previous 4 or 5 years. He knew that removing the rear swing arm, and wheel and modifying the frame and the exhaust for the new swing arm and wheels was beyond his personal abilities he engaged John at Motorcycle Enhancements in Oakville to make the necessary mods to make the rear end work and Ian went to work on the rims and sourcing a rear fender to cover what would be a monster rear tire. He phoned down to H D wheels in California where the rims that came with his buddies kit and he said well the bike has a real retro look and feel to it and I love the white walls so Andre at HD wheels suggested that the rims be painted glacier white and as you can see from the pics the bike looks like its wearing white walls. I happened to be standing outside with Ian’s wife Christine when he rode up to the shoot and I had totally mistaken the bike for having white walls when he rode in. Ian was adamant that he wanted to keep that original

look and feel to his deluxe and he got on the phone with Milwaukee Iron and ordered himself a self supported rear fender to cover over the monster rear tire that was to be installed on the back of his bike and once John and company had the rear end all fitted up properly on this beauty he shipped the fender off to ACG 1st Canadian where Tony worked his magic recreating the paint and pinstripe from the original fender on the new monster fender that was to be installed. He says there were many custom fabricated pieces involved in making this project all come together including manufacturing custom brackets and spacers to accommodate offsetting the drive and fitting the final drive belt around the monster rear wheel. When everything was all together and fitting properly he says that all the new pieces were either painted to match or chrome plated locally depending on their location and purpose to finish off the look that Ian was going for.

When it was all said and done the bike was wearing an 18” X 240mm width rear tire and a 21” front tire with the front fender lowered over the front wheel. Ian says it give s the illusion of the bike moving even as it sits still. Of course the exhaust required a new treatment to get around the big 240 rear tire and a set of Vance and Hine true dual fish tails which were inverted did the job giving the bike the look of shark fins on the back. After all this work was done, Ian and his wife took this bike on a ride down through the east coast of Canada saying that although they didn’t make the ride down they did trailer the bike and ride it to all the areas which they wanted to tour while out at the east coast, and he trailered the bike down to Florida the past two years for bike week in Daytona. Ian says for touring that he also has a full set of fully detachable luggage including a windshield for the ride, road king classic style leather wrapped hard bags as well as a tour pack that sits up top all of which is quick release so if he rode to where he wanted to be the luggage could all be quickly and easily removed to give it that super clean look you see here in the pics. I would agree that this is one sweet lookin ride and Ian has done an excellent job of creating a look that is unique and original and he says that babygirl is not a trailer queen with over 50,000 km’s on the odometer and that he spends many hours each week he rides cleaning it to keep it in that super clean condition that he is so proud of.

Riding Paul from the Schwa (Oshawa) aka The Dingo and I have spent the past week in neighbouring Uruguay just south and east of the massive and vibrant Brazil. We are both dreading the bus trip from Montevideo, Uruguay to Porto Alegre, Brazil to party with our Brazilian friends on their annual National Run. Who in their right mind takes a bus trip in South America? We cannot fly directly. We must go to Buenos Aries, Argentina to the west and south before going north to Porto Alegre. Our visa to get into Argentina is good for one visit only. We want to save our visa for our attending a world biker party in Buenos Aries after Brazil. Therefore, we cannot use up our visa while flying to Brazil even though we would just be transferring planes. The red tape in these countries is worse than Canada. Furthermore, all flights are full because it is Easter weekend. These crime ridden societies take their religion very seriously. We cannot borrow bikes from Uruguay MC for the trip because we cannot take them across a border unless owning them. Ditto for renting a bike. Also, there are no H-D rentals in South America. However, I meet a new friend in Porto Alegre who is an H-D mechanic at Rio Harley-Davidson. He can get me a bike whenever I want and the paperwork to cross borders! The bus is the only way to get to Porto Alegre. The moral of this story is to plan your trip at home.

David and Goliath

There is a group of many thousands throughout Brazil that do not like us. They are violent and show their displeasure at every opportunity. This is another reason we cannot walk alone. However, these bullies ran into some unforseen problems. Perhaps they will look for someone else that is easier to dislike? Just because you have 25 for one odds does not mean that Goliath will triumph....poor Goliath. Forgive me as I must digress. The biblical story of David and Goliath is probably not a parable but a true event. However, Goliath never stood a chance against the boysheppherd. Shepparding was hazardous work and not for the timid. Alone at night in the wilderness, a sheppard would have to confront marauding wolves and bears to protect the flock. Sheppards did this with stones and a sling (slingshot). To hit and kill a charging wolf or bear with one slung stone between the eyes was all in a night’s work. A skilled sling user can hit a bullseye at 50 meters (yards for the older set) with amazing force. Historians feel that Goliath had a disease called giantism. Goliath was a mighty warrior who defeated all who would dare fight him head-on. Two symptoms of giantism are poor vision and lumbering slowness. By all accounts, David was the only one not afraid to fight Goliath. Goliath roared with derisive laughter when David advanced to fight. He ordered David to come closer and fight like a man. David began running, a stone in his sling and a spare in his hand. This behaviour confused Goliath who likely had double vision. Once within accurate sling range, David threw the stone, which hit the giant between the eyes killing him instantly. David, then proceded to cut Goliath’s head off as a trophy for his king.

Riding to the Party

The bikes roll in all day and night through the warm rain from jungle highways, roads, and huge cities. Some have been riding for a few weeks to get here. One group has ridden 6000 kilometers, will continue to Buenos Aries, then across the continent to Santiago Chile, up through Peru and do a huge circle before heading home to various Brazilian cities after how many kilometers, I am not sure but it will easily be 10,000 to 15000 km. European friends join these rides for distances they cannot imagine at home. This country is as beautiful as it is dangerous; it is as stunning as it is corrupt; it is as rich as it is poor, and few places are as friendly but keep yer eyes wide open at all times. The boys from Manaus ride hard core. When in Manaus, it is like any other big city, There are tall buildings, transit, and good quality roads. However, there is only jungle outside the city and only one highway, which is the mighty Amazon River. They ferry their bikes along the Amazon for three days to

get to the closest highway. Then it is three days dangerous ride along jungle roads to Rio, then it is clear sailing (forgive the pun) south along the coast for another fifteen hundred klicks to Porto Alegre.

The Party: Night One

The party’s first night is for friends only. The next night is for friends, supporters and other bike clubs. The nonstop grilled beef is constantly replenished at our tables. Two 8-foot tall, 4-foot wide monster kegs of ice cold beer sit at either end of party floor. Other libations or whatever your heart desires are available at two bars. Ladies of the night are allowed. They filter in, in groups of four or five until perhaps 30 or 40 work the room. Soon, they seem to forget their initial reason for coming and begin to enjoy the party. A few take their clothes off except for a silk scarf and dance naked through the party. I laugh as a friend from Holland surrounds himself with 5 beauties while his German girlfriend watches from across the room. After a while she parties on while he speaks Dutch

to women who only understand Portuguese. They talk away, laughing with no one understanding the conversation. Everything you have heard about Brazilian women is true. What you may not have heard is that the supply is endless.

The Most Beautiful Woman: Maria

Paul and I sit on one side of the crowded hall. The main gaggle of hookers sit across and down the way. They are all good lookers but one is better than the rest. She stands, looking our way, and traverses the floor towards me. She reaches our table. She looks straight into my eyes with a lovely smile. Then, she ignores me, and smiles seductively at Paul. She sits beside him, speaking Portuguese. When Paul does not

understand, she begins with broken English. Her name is Maria. She never comes to this part of town as it is far too dangerous. She also feels that she belongs with a higher class of wealthy people. Her “work” involves traveling the world with rich young men or executives as an escort. Paul asks her to go to a van out back. The going rate at this party is $200 U.S., this is a lot of money for Brazil. She politely declines. She says that she is leaving as this is not really her type of event but not before asking for Paul’s phone-text number. She is not gone 15 minutes before Paul begins receiving constant text messages. He converses via text with her the rest of the night, the next morning, and for weeks and months after. I don’t get it?… but I soon figure it out. The next afternoon, Maria arrives at our modest hotel in an expensive luxury car. She is even better looking in daylight. She asks Paul to come sightseeing. Paul from the Schwa dropped me, his bro in an instant. She is afraid to drive alone in this neighbourhood. It doesn’t look bad to me but a robbery or killing happens in Brazil in an instant. Stores all have signs that there is no admittance to motorcyclists wearing helmets. Harley riders, which are a rarity are okay because they obviously already have money. Maria takes Paul to lunch in the nice part of town, which I only get to hear about. She brings him back and spends the night with him. Now, I understand. Maria wants a relationship with Paul and doesn’t want to start it by being a whore… smart girl… and no, she is not looking for a better life in Canada. Her life in Brazil is fine. She lives with her close knit family and studies criminal law at the university here. I laugh and say to Paul, “She has a nice personality, beautiful, with a cool car, buys your meals, and fucks your brains out plus she will be able to save your ass in court!” The following week we travel to Argentina. She tries desperately to find a flight to Buenos Aries to be with Paul but it is Easter and the flights are booked solid. After we are back home, Maria is still texting away from Chicago, while being an escort for a rich kid and then from New York later on. Maybe there is something to Paul’s skin conditioner and hair gel routine? Oh yeah, let us not forget that Paul sings quiet ballads as he goes through his day.

The Party: Night Two

Tonight is 2 parties in one. The main hall is just for US. The surrounding outside is for support clubs and invited people. I will float through both connected parties all night. Each has a band; Brazilian barbeque, and anything else one might need or crave. I decide to walk to the party from my hotel. I need exercise as I am eating way too much. It is dark. My friends forbid me to walk alone during the day. They assume I will not do it at night. I know NOT to walk to the party as it is in a really bad area that is desolate. I leave my passport and money hidden in my room and begin my foolish walk. Being tough is not nearly enough here. I take a wrong turn and become lost. I try to tell myself I am not in a bad place but graffiti tells me otherwise. I am tired. I find a main street and try to hail a cab. They are afraid to stop. Finally one does. Grey, or is that silver, hair has its advantages. I sit in the back. I can tell he does not like me being there. He is nervous. Later, I find out seven cabbies have

been murdered here recently by thieves. They kill you before the robbery! I give him the address. He says no such place. I show him on a map. He will not go there. As we drive and argue I begin to figure out where I am. I tell him to go under the expressway. He will not. He then tells me to sit in the front beside him. He has a weapon. He asks where I go....the name. There is a police compound that looks like a military installation near the party. I say “policia” and point under the expressway. He relaxes a little and drives through the dreaded tunnel. We get to the police place and I wave him on a bit to the party site. He sees an explosion of people and music. He is much relieved. Then he realizes he has struck the motherlode and shuttles my friends all night long

Beefed Out

I am beefed out. I love beef. I like chicken. I can’t stand the look of either right now. Maybe Brazil is so crazy because of the massive amounts of beef eaten 24/7. Mattu from Rio takes us to an upscale Italian restaurant. Finally, no meat! Ten courses of pasta later they bring the beef and chicken. I can’t take this anymore. You need practice to eat this much. It is all good quality but the quantity is staggering. We leave for the airport this morning for our flight to Buenos Aries. It is 2-hours away. My Brazilian friends are all riding to Uruguay to pick up our prospective friends from Montevideo. They will then ride to Buenos Aries (BA), Argentina as friends from over 60 countries are arriving there for the BIG party.

RIP Francisco

“Looking for adventure and whatever comes our way. We fly so high; one of us is sure to die” Buses in South America are big. Their drivers are aggressive and drive fast. They own the road. One soon learns not to step off a curb here without looking and giving way. Might is right. Pedestrians are at the bottom of the food chain. Smaller vehicles stay out of the way. We partied with Francisco on the Brazil National Run and in Buenos Aries.

Brazil

Every country I go to, I tell stories about what I see or learn. At the end of the trip I provide an overview so the reader does not get an overall impression that may not be the big picture. Brazilian people are friendly and quick to laugh. They enjoy life. Brazil is an emerging powerhouse economy and as such will have growing pains. Brazil is a breadbasket for the world...it can produce much food for other countries. Its mineral and oil wealth may be the greatest of any country. Its beauty is staggering. Already, it’s manufacturing prowess has proven itself in areas like aerospace. The main problem, as I see it, is that the wealth and corruption is concentrated leaving most deprived of basic needs. Hopefully, the wealth will be spread around as Brazil grows onto the world stage. Education, social programs, and hope can reduce much of the poverty induced crime.

Shenanigans

with Sherri O’Irish

Now THIS, is the kind of weather we’ve all been waiting for, beautiful warm sunny days, that are just perfect for riding. From here on in, there is pretty much some sort of biker related event going on every weekend until fall. Over the last several weekends, I’ve taken a few all day tours around Central Ontario, “meandering” and eventually coming to my destination. I call it “meandering”, because as most of my friends know, I have the directional sense of a thumb tack, and I usually end up getting side tracked or temporarily lost. I am adamantly against GPS, and try to do it old school, with my trusty road atlas, and if I must, use my Map App. I just point and go, simple as that. I have come across some interesting side roads and scenery, look outs and attractions, restaurants, and pit stops,

all with my red hair flying in the wind. The other thing I’ve noticed on my travels, whether out in the general public or amongst other riders, is the overwhelming abundance of people, wearing clothes promoting a certain popular “bike club” TV series. Everywhere you look, you can find it loud and proud, silk screened and patched clothing, made to imitate association, status and support. Why someone would choose to spend money to make a billion dollar franchise even richer, on items meant to glamorize a fictional club, on a male soap opera drama, is beyond me? Wearing that, and calling yourself a biker, is as bad as growing a beard, throwing on a camo jacket, and calling yourself a redneck, while living in your $500 000 suburban house! Years ago, several biker movies came out, including one called “The Wild One”, and the negative biker stereotype mould was cast, with some of the repercussions still felt today. Now with a series that goes on season after season, and people buying into the “WANNA BE” hype and rebellion, is it any wonder, why bikers get a bad rap. Do you think that a California based patch, looks any different to the police going down the road at 80 km, and who are going to be the first ones to complain, when they get jacked up, over it? The freedom to ride, is your RIGHT, uninhibited by assumptions, harassment, and disrespect, whether club related or not. Rarely does the media report on any of the good things done by riders of all makes and models, they only seem to dwell on the things that seem to enforce the skewed public perception of us, made by Hollywood and law enforcement. Over the years, through cutbacks, the economy and lack of support, charities have had to find other ways and means for funding. They have realized, that motorcyclists in clubs, groups and as a whole, combine riding with raising money, all in one beneficial goal, and have decided to capitalize on it, raising millions of dollars for worthy causes, diseases, and illnesses, with their charity rides, and fundraisers, merchandise, as well as promoting awareness. My point being through all of this, is that if you want to show your support for something, make sure it is something tangible and REAL, not some popular, fake, fad bandwagon. The common threads that bind the biker community together, are the love of riding motorcycles, the SPEEDWAY . FLAT TRACK . ATV brother/sisterhood, and helping friends, families and strangers alike. It’s not about what you ride, or even if you ride, as long as you “WANNA DO” something to support your local biker and charity communities, through attending, volunteering, donating, and purchasing support and event gear worthy to wear proudly. Flat The Flat Track Canada Series is entering round five at Welland County Speedway, home of one the greatest turnkey flat track racing facilities in the world. At the Last round at Welland, we saw the greatest expert final in a long time with Mike Labelle stealing the victory away from the Flat Track Canada point leader Don Taylor, just edging out the hard charging Doug Lawrence. The battle came down to the final lap and the final corner as three bikes crossed the line in a photo finish, going down as one of the greatest races I’ve ever seen. Overall I think the quality of flat track racing has improved in Canada with the new Flat Track Canada Series. I know that must sound bias; however the attention and hype seems to attract good quality riders and many of them from the United States. Why do we attract great American talent in Canada when United States offers the ‘big show’? Well for what most people don’t know any racing that typically takes place outside of the Grand National Championship (GNC) is that most of the district racing is Amateur only competition or doesn’t really host a pro/ expert class. Therefore the ‘package’ that Canada has to offer is good crowds, cheap entries, decent competition and pretty good prize money which is considered good value for any New York, Michigan, or even Ohio racer. It gives young upcoming racers a great opportunity to test their skills without the extra pressure of the GNC or you see some of the older guys extend their career a bit. Either way it can be a confidence booster coming to Canada, like Chris Hart did in the 90’s, it can make a rider feel like a ‘big fish in a smaller pond’. Another great reason we see American’s joining us here in Canada is for the great cushion half miles. Thanks to the horse racing industry, Ontario is rich with premium facilities which are rare elsewhere in the world. It’s great to see American racers join our competition and it really builds experience and improves our

It’s a week- long featuring four events at four different venues. I’m confident Hunter will do well and it’ll show the American’s that Canadian talent shouldn’t be taken lightly. Ladies and their Harleys

This month’s feature lady is Sherri-Lynne from Cambridge and her husband Dan is a lifelong rider and he wanted Sherri to take up riding so for one of her significant birthday milestones he bought her a brand new Harley-Davidson Crossbones which was the Harley version of a very beefy bobber. Husband Dan had a kind of ulterior motive in buying her a new ride beyond wanting her to ride along with him he had two old rides one being an ironhead sportster that he had owned since he was a young fellow and a panhead that he had owned for about 5 years. In addition to getting Sherri on the road they also wanted to get their kids on the road with them so Dan handed his ironhead off to his son who was the older of the two kids and sold his pan to finance the purchase of the new crossbones softail that he claims to be buying her as a birthday gift. Of course she was not riding at the time and Dan has been riding the bike since its purchase new. Well Sherri got started

with her riding on a $2000 virago and she loved it signing up for the motorcycle riding course at the local community college she hung onto the virago until she had graduated from her learners permit to her middle license in our graduated license system. Once she graduated to the middle license it was time to move up from the virago to something Harley Davidson. This sweet looking customized sportster was picked up from a retail owner/seller in Oakville through Kijiji the popular free buy and sell website serving this area, most of us are familiar with it and I gotta tell ya this is one sweet lookin ride that runs well, has a wide glide front end, custom paint job, mustang style fuel tank, forward controls and a lot of chrome bits on it as well. Sherri has added a few items to personalize the bike including a d d i n g some L.E.D. lighting to the underside of the bike as well as under the fuel tank and the tool bag on the front end to carry around whatever she

Ladies and their Harleys So Sherri tells me the plan is to move up from the sportster to the cross bones but she seemed to be in a quandary, she really loves the cross bones bike and had ridden it a few times last year in the lead up to taking it over on a full time basis once she has her “M” license, but she is also very much in love with her sportster that she has been riding for years now, but she’s got this beautiful bike waiting. Too make matters worse or something depending on your particular perspective Dan really has a passion for riding the cross bones bike that he has been riding as a place holder for his wife for the all these years now and he would like to hang onto the bike that he has put so many miles onto at this point and considering that he sold both his other bikes to get his wife this ride he says that he is willing to buy her any new bike that her heart desires this year when she graduates the needs, and I am told that she rides this bike like she stole it so she has a high degree of confidence on this ride. She was competing in some field games in the waterloo area and a friend challenged her to enter into the drag races and Sherri says not only did she compete in the races but that she won and that there was a bit of wonder in the voice of the announcer who seemed stunned that the resulting winner was Sherri but she was and she gets out and does a fair amount of riding on this bike. Sherri and Dan have a group of friends that they ride with and they do a lot of travel throughout Ontario based on when their schedules permit with her selling advertising for a local newspaper in the Cambridge area and he being a machinist. Sherri says that she is at the end of her years holding her M2 license and it was time to move up and do the exit exam with her community college mentors and when we had to juggle our schedule around a bit back in late April to get shoots lined up she was actually scheduled to do her test that evening. It ended up raining and cool and enough that our shoot that was too follow sherries cancelled out on us as there was a possibility of freezing rain and Sherri said that she ended up cancelling her exit test for that weekend due to both the shoot that we were trying to schedule with her that day was well as the poor weather. We left town that evening in absolutely miserable weather and headed off to Windsor to do shoots for the weekend out in the southwestern Ontario area.

exit course at the community college and makes a decision. I did ask her to send me an email and let me know what the final decision would be on the fate of Dan and his much beloved crossbones softail which he bought for her and has since become so attached to it although she loves the bike because he gave it to her as a gift even if now he really does want to keep it for himself, well at least he says that he will buy her whatever she wants brand new. In the final analysis what I saw was a gal who learned to ride and got a bike that she’s really comfortable and confident on who started on this journey because her husband bought he an awesome looking bike that at that time he thought she would like and because he was a lifelong rider and had always rode older bikes he really liked the newer technology. He did say that if she does decide to take it for herself that he would buy another bike but it would not be a new one but it had to be no older than 2009, apparently he likes the larger engine, more gears on the tranny and whatever other amenities they have on those models as my research shows they do not make the crossbones anymore it was only available for a couple of years.

Motorcyco Beau So first we wait for Summer to finally arrive and then we find ourselves trying to fit as many things as possible into it as we can and I always find myself riding around in circles trying to decide which motorcycle event, ride or charity function I am going to head out to take part in each weekend. I always give priority to those events that care enough to advertise in the Mag and so sometimes I find myself attending as many as two events in the same day and that was the situation I found myself in near the end of May. In the morning I was heading east of Ottawa to take part in the 3rd Annual Mission 2804 C.C. Dice Run that was happening in the town of Cassleman, in support of their community’s air cadet group, and then later on that same day I would be back in Ottawa participating in a motorcycle - custom car and truck show being put on by the Denny’s

restaurant in the South Keys Plaza and hosted by The Celtic Brotherhood in support for their Traumatic Brain Injury & PTSD Awareness projects. This year all the riders who participated in the Casselman Dice Run were treated to ideal riding weather with lots of sun and just warm enough to make you want to get out on the road and ride so you could feel the breeze in your face. I estimate that there were somewhere between 300 to 400 riders taking part In this year’s ride and the folks that were hosting this event were truly over the top with the crowd turnout and participation. While I walked around taking photographs I also took the opportunity to chat with some of the riders and discovered a large number of them were from Quebec and a good turnout of riders from Cornwall area as well as some riders from west of Ottawa but I would have to say that the rider who came the farthest distance to take part in the Dice Run was my cousin J.c., who is from Igaluit in Canada’s far north, for a visit and to get some riding in on his motorcycle that he keeps stored at my place. The Casselman Dice Run was a great success and I will do a more detailed cover of it in an article in the Fall. When I headed back into Ottawa I was a little disappointed to see the skies turning overcast, not actually threatening to rain but it was sad to see all that sun starting to disappear but when I drove into the lot of the Denny’s restaurant, the Denny’s & TCB crews were busily setting up the area that was for the cruise-in event and there was already a pretty fair number of motorcycles and cars settling into their areas for the evening’s events. This cruise night keeps getting better and better with each one and I enjoy this twice yearly event because it is fun to be able to walk around and see not only all the motorcycles that are lined up but also the custom trucks and cars. Because of Denny’s location near the big barn stores in the plaza I am sure many of the wives and girlfriends take advantage of shopping and at the same time it also encourages the general public to come over and participate. One of the first groups to ride in were lead by two people you often hear me mention, Perry Montgomery and his “lovely” wife Genanne, who brought up a bunch of their fellow riders from the Cornwall area and the reason that I find myself mentioning the Montgomery’s so much in my articles is because they always participate in whatever is going on in motorcycle communities outside the one they live in and encourage others they know to ride with them. Aside from taking pictures and trying to help out in any way

Motorcyco Beau that I could I had a surprise visitor who is a long time friend call Felix. Now if you have been involved in motorcycles in the Ottawa area over the last 35 years or so, or if you are into vintage motorcycles then the name Felix or his business Cycle Salvage are not unknown to you. Having him come down to the cruise night was a personal treat not only for me but for lots of others who consider Felix a good friend. Not long after his arrival, Peri & Tim Poirier from B.A. Machine showed up to take part in the event and this husband and wife team are well known in Ottawa’s motorcycle community. Once Tim & Felix got talking it was a given that they would be in that same spot for a very long time. There was a good turnout of motorcycles ranging from stock to custom, choppers through to vintage and sports bikes and I always enjoy seeing the whole spectrum of motorcycles riders coming together to take part in celebrating their mutual passion and love of two wheels regardless of what type they ride and in their doing so they were helping out The Celtic Brotherhood and its efforts to promote brain injury awareness to all. Some of the money that was collected this year was going to be used to purchase a lithographed shelter that the TCB can use as an information booth during the summer at other events and rides. A big thanks to Mike Robinson & Jeff Billard, owners of the Denny’s Restaurants in South Keys Ottawa and also the Denny’s in Belleville. They have made motorcycle riders and their families feel welcome and aside from Jeff, being a rider and owner of a couple of bikes himself, they have been strong supporters of the area motorcycle community. Another local event that took place at the end of May was the “No Lip Benefit Fun Run” for both motorcycles & hot rods and in honor of an old friend and well known biker, Merlin, who turned 65, and a huge celebration was held including a poker run, silent auction and live music and even camping, it was quite an event. The poker run they had was made up of about 250 to 300 riders and one of the stops along their route was to B.A. Machine, where it got so busy that Peri & Tim actually shut down business for the day

Peri says that the riders came in three groups, the early birds, then the clubs and then the French connection. Word is that Mike’s restaurant which is next door to the shop eventually sold out of all the breakfast items and the riders really got a big kick out of seeing the new shop and having the opportunity to see some of the machinery that we refer to as “Tim’s Toys”! B.A. had donated several items for the auction including one of Peri’s hand-knit sweaters and I was told that about $4,500.00

It always is a plus to see the local motorcycle community come together and celebrate one of their own and Merlin is just about a legend in the area. Respect & kudos to all those who participated in Merlin’s birthday celebration and who helped to make this event the success it was Also much thanks to businesses like B.A. Machine, Goone Cycles, Cycle Salvage, Wheelsport etc, for your sponsorship and participation. A first year event that we participated in was the “1st Annual Ride for Her”, a ride that is devoted to the cause of ovarian cancer research and with my older sister, Eileen being a “survivor” of this particular cancer and considering all the different rides we have for prostate cancer I felt it was important that I take part and help promote this cause. Most of us have wives, sisters & daughters etc and all of us have

mothers so men taking part in a ride to help battle ovarian cancer is just simply a “no-brainer”. This ride was the brain child of a bundle of energy that goes by the name of Cheryl Ozun, who runs a business called Business In Motions and wild having no previous knowledge of how to organize a ride, she approached numerous people in the motorcycle community and sought out the advice necessary to create this one. She was lucky enough to acquire the sponsorship of Marcel & Linda Moncion, owners of Moncion’s Independent Grocer on River Rd. Both Marcel & Linda, who are long-time harley riders and no strangers to taking part in community rides and were very interested in helping to get this ride up on its way to becoming an annual event in Ottawa the area. They provided the support necessary for this one to happen and because people like them who use their business to enable things like this to take place, I ask area riders to show your appreciation by shopping at their store when possible because I am a strong believer that as bikers we have to support all businesses that support us and put the power of our dollars to show our appreciation. Also taking part in this event were two long-time friends Lynne & Dave Presley who were there to encourage everyone to remember to sign up and become organ donors. Dave himself was the recipient of a donation just a little over a year ago and is doing well, and most of TCB wear green ribbons for organ donation that Lynne gave them last year in Merrickville. These days I think just about everyone knows or knows of someone who had received an organ transplant and while we all think it is a good idea, many of us forget to fill in the forms, just in case something happens so please take the time to fill in the info and let your family know that you wish to be an organ donor! The weather was perfect and among the

Motorcyco Beau riders who attended was a lady whose presence always brings a smile to my face, Denise Nicholson, who after reading my posts for riders to come and take part even though it was short notice, Denise showed up on her bike and won the award for the rider with the most money collected in pledges, this lady is a truly class act! While I had hoped for a larger turnout of male riders, I think that some mistakenly thought the ride was only open to women but that will all be changed for next year’s event. On a parting note, both Marcel & Linda are proud parents of a Doberman and they had not known that my service dog and head of security for The Celtic Brotherhood, Garth, the Wonder-Dog, had passed away and I want to thank them for all the gracious things they mentioned about Garth. Also a very special thanks to Mr. Brian MacDonald, of Zee Medical Canada, who was instrumental in helping the Brotherhood acquire their first AED (portable heart defibrillator) for our “Help Kick Start A Life” campaign also known as the “Garth Rooney Project”. The boys will be bringing the AED’s to events & rides they attend, we also hope to inspire other groups, rides & charity events to consider purchasing AED’s to help save the life of fellow bikers by adding this piece of life-saving equipment to their venue. The “Forever 2 Wheels Bike Nights” Wednesdays at the Rideau Carleton Raceway & Casino are a big hit with area riders who are thrilled and find it a bonus not having to park on gravel or hardpack any longer and being up by Albion Rd in a much bigger lot, which is a double bonus. If you are in the Ottawa area or just visiting, please drop by and enjoy all the motorcycles and you can always take advantage of the famous RCR $9.99 all you can eat buffet (which I figure they must lose money when the bikers go there to eat, at least the bikers I know). July is going to be a busy month with lots to do so please check out your copy of The Riders Mag or visit us online to see “What’s Shakin” and hopefully I will see many of you out at the Ride for Autism on July 19th in Ottawa. As always please remember to

Red Devils Show It was an overcast day and it looked like we could have some rain in store for us as it was cloudy and cool but not too bad as Petoonia and I headed out towards Hamilton. I had intended to take my trike “Black Bitch 3” and introduce her at this event but I had broken her chain a couple of days earlier and was unable to get it sorted out in time for her to come. I had to be somewhat suspicious of her garage mate Petoonia as she has been feeling left out lately but couldn’t prove anything except motive so I just let it go. Petoonia was running like a dream and we made short work of the miles between Newmarket and Hamilton and soon were rolling down the already busy street and finding a spot for Petoonia to rest for the duration.

I couldn’t help but notice that this year as it was last year the lack of noticeable Police presence at the top of the street. In years past they were a huge pain in the ass as they set up a roadblock checkpoint to check riders upon arrival. This action was over the top and completely unnecessary but that is what they did. I mentioned it to one of the RD’s at the top of the street and he quickly pointed out the van parked out on the side of the road and the vehicle in the parking lot adjacent to the street loaded with cops and camera equipment keeping a more low profile but ever vigilant eye on the “Biker Horde” and keeping society safe or perhaps, more accurately just using up their “Biker Budget” with a little overtime action to keep them in the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed from the comfort of their vehicles with the heavily tinted windows. Whatever! I certainly had better things to do than even raise my camera to snap a couple of shots. There were some great looking motorcycles and a lot of great people to meet just down the street so that is where I was heading. The street was abuzz with people. The clubs neighbours on the street come out to check out the action and mill around with the bikers checking out the fine looking bikes. The smoke from the barbecues rose up and wafted tantalizingly through the air, awakening appetites and beckoning attendees to come in and sample the fine fare that they were producing and it was working effectively as there was a constant line-up throughout the day of hungry folks, some of whom probably didn’t realize that they were hungry until they smelled the barbecues. There was lots to see and a lot of talking to do and I got right down to it and it was a constant walk up and down the street for me and a great test of my new knee which was holding up admirably for the most part as by the end of the day, I was glad it was the end of the day but I knew that if needed I could have pushed myself and the new parts a little bit further. I found Bad Bob and his fine looking bike at the bottom of

the street where Bob was tearing into one of the burgers while taking in the action so I wandered over to talk a while and make some plans for future events and happenings and get his take on the chain situation with the trike. The place was getting very busy and it appeared that even the threat of rain wasn’t deterring folks from coming out to this fine event. It had been a long and miserable winter and I guess many were just more determined than ever to just get out there. Whatever the cause, they were coming out in near record numbers and the street was jammed to overflowing and they still kept coming. The area set aside for the Show and Shine entrees was full as well with some fantastic looking bikes and they were capturing lots of attention. Also garnering lots of attention was the Lovely Lissa Hill with her fine leather fashions and other items in her booth at the edge of the parking lot. Also the RD’s had a huge display of their support items laid out

The day just flew by and I was kept busy throughout meeting lots of great people along the way and giving in to temptation and the siren’s call of the barbecues a time or two. I noticed though as the day wore on, that people were paying more and more attention to the sky as more dark ominous clouds had moved in and were hanging menacingly overhead and seemed to be developing some attitude that was worsening continuously. I could see Ray and other

Rd’s forming into small huddles and also giving glances towards the heavens and knew that a change in plans was about to be announced. They decided to speed up the judging and do the awards a bit earlier than scheduled due to the impending rain and we gathered at the steps of the CH and awaited Ray’s booming voice to announce the winners and I assumed my official Photographers spot and stance in preparation. There was a new twist this year as there were representatives from the CNIB there and they had been selling raffle tickets throughout the day, although I must have missed them in my travels and didn’t have a ticket. It was a nice addition and they are very appreciative of the Red Devil’s efforts and contributions. are fun as it is intended to be. The draws and presentations being done, the large crowd began to disperse and there was a continuous roar as bikes fired up and began to evacuate the street. The decisions to move things up was proven to have been wise and the timing was perfect as just after the last words left Ray’s lips the skies began to open up and the rush was on to suit up in rain gear and head for home. Great time once again guys and a job well done.

519-636-3717 23983 Melbourne Rd. Strathroy, Ont. Thunder and Lightning in the Forest City Hello to all the readers out there. First let me give you the reason behind the title for this column. Lightning is my nickname and Phantom Thunder is the name of. the Motorcycle Club that I belong to. How did I get the name Lightning? Some day let me explain it to you, over lunch. The Forest City is London’s pet name, and my goal is to cover some of the goings on in and around this area. Last article had way too much funeral info for my liking. Let it be known that my brother Smiley’s send off was memorable

we buried him. Of course the police had to pull over some bikes leaving the cemetery and issue tickets. They were pissed because we rode through “their” city without helmets. Summer is here. Days that are too hot often followed by cool clear nights. Perfect for getting out and visiting friends, or going anywhere. Coming home at night won me some awesome bug collections, most of them unrecognizable,

but I am sure glad to have a windshield. June 6th PTMC hosted a bike night at Delaware Speedway. There was a people’s choice show and shine and burn-out contest, and we got to ride our bikes around the track a few times. Before and after the national anthem, then watch the races. See any member for $2.00 off coupons, good for the whole season. Last weekend was a full card. Port Dover on Friday 13th, busy as one might expect on a sunny June day. Prospect’s next door neighbor wanted to go, first time, but he couldn’t take her, so I offered. That morning she overslept and had to rush to get to our ch before we left without her. Texting her location from a taxi, I was able to guess her eta, and timed (stalled) just enough. All the bikes were lined up in two rows behind me, engines running, when the cab pulled up. Out jumps a blond young lady in a purple minidress. She comes straight to me, put a helmet on, climbed on the bike and we all rode out. Picture perfect departure. People know that I like to flirt with the young ladies but up until that very moment, only prospect and I knew that I was taking a passenger that day. On the way there, we took a wrong turn adding www.actiontrailers.ca 20 km on to our ride, but took a different way 4728 Egremont Dr. Strathroy, ON ( 15 min. west of London ) in, other than Main St. We were looking for the

QMC camp but a local told us to take the second road, when the first was the right one. The spot we ended up at was a nice find though. Grassy area with some shade trees right near the bridge. Looking up the Main St. hill was a sea of people. One trip to where Critter and the Rider’s mag and back was enough for me so we found a shady spot on some rocks by the lake, sat for a while and had a smoke. After a short rest we all gathered back at the bikes to come back to London then party into the night. Saturday I had promised to attend a ride to take some ashes, Doug Dahl’s, to a cemetery out of town. Nice respectful gathering of family and friends. That meant a lot to his kids. Almost at the same time my friends Doug and Joeslyn finally tied the knot (got to the reception). Besides the family, friends and biker friends that were invited, police also attended, for the safety of the public. First I heard that weddings were a danger to the community. Father’s day was race day at Grand Bend, an annual event to “run what you brung in the sun”. Several MC’s had racers entered and it was nice to see them wearing their cuts while racing each other. Our own Rocket, entered his v-Rod and showed quite well, but he came in just short of the money. Next year bro. This article is off to the printers now, but tune in next month for more stories from the London area. This weekend is the OCC Unity ride for clubs from all over the province. The final leg of the ride is from London to A’burg where the Queensmen are hosting a feast and party with live bands. Look for Guardrail’s article in next month’s mag.

Until then, knees in the breeze, shiny side up. L&R, Lightning.

In his earlier years as a body man he built hot rods, classics and was also a great fabricator, and a licenced body man along with being a black belt in Karate. When he started building bikes they were full custom low to the ground and fast as hell so low scraping frames and replacing worn off kickstands and they were all green with a thirteen somewhere. He will be missed by everyone that new him for his quick snappy responses and for a great laugh. He liked to fight for the small guy and helping the down and out. tickets and made my way to the card table where I was lucky and pulled a 10spades, thinking I’m off to a good start, at the corner of this booth was a large Tim Horton’s style coffee urn, got my much needed cup and walked around chatting and taking a few pics, inside is full of new and used motorcycles, all lined up just waiting for their new owners, and with a 15% discount card I received with my registration, I saved myself a little bundle of dough, picking up some needed accessories. Heather and her crew were about to arrive and the camera guys for the TV show were scurrying around to get set up and take footage of the arrival, just a couple followers this year, they got their bikes parked etc. About 15 minutes later an announcement that the ride/poker run was about to take off and we could all ride in one pack together. Lighthouse cove was the first stop of the day, this is where I had a few pics of myself and Heather taken, then off to stop the next stop, along the way I am thinking I never got my card, or my paper stamped, next stop was Robinson Motorcycle where at the table I explained my dilemma, seems they were already aware of my absentmindedness, letting me take 2 cuts this time 10 spades again and a 7 hearts, well at least I got a pair and both are a spade, Next stop is Lakeside Brewery in Erieau where we got another card this time a J Diamonds, don’t help much but could still get 2 pair, still threatening rain and spitting at times we head back to Dukes to get our last card and a meal that is supplied for us, I got a K Clubs well I got a pair anyway. I ate a burger and chips, talking to a few people, the band is setting up, the winners of poker hand were announced and door prizes drawn, just after this the sun came out in full force, heated the air the band started playing. great day was had, though the day started cold and wet it turned out great and the ride was fantastic. Definitely be putting this one on my list for next year.
