das las comunidades estén bien representadas en los libros de texto. De ahí que incluso se piense en diseñar o rediseñar el material didáctico que se tiene en las escuelas, para ser más incluitivos”, digo García. Y es que la diferencia entre cada vecindario de Omaha es muy singular, de ahí que la elaboración de este circuito por el Sur, facilite conocer su morfología urbana y poblacional, ofreciendo la posibilidad de profundizar en los orígenes y el desarrollo urbanístico e histórico del hoy llamado “corazón latino de Omaha”. Así, el arranqe ocurrió en el edificio TAC de OPS, rumbo a la escuela Bancrof y después a la escuela Spring Lake. En esta última, la bienvenida corrió a cargo de diversos padres de familia, quienes hablaron de su preferencia por habitar el sur de la ciudad, aún sin ser latinos, con lo que se pudo comprender mejor la realidad urbanística actual de Omaha, subrayando que el Sur no es un ente abstracto, sino que es una creación colectiva como expresión formal y cultural de sus habitantes a través de la historia. La siguiente parada ocurrió en la iglesia católica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, donde María Arbelaes, de la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha, habló a los presentes de la historia del edificio y de la ciudad. La siguiente escala fue en el campus Sur de Metropolitan Community Collage, donde María Vázquez fue la encargada de hablar por dicha institución, donde subrayó su trabajo educativo en la comunidad. Por fin, luego de ir también analizando los diversos inmuebles que bordeaban el trayecto en autobus, se arribó a El Museo Lartino, donde se ofreció una muestra del folklore hispano, con la presencia del mariachi Las Cecilias y el ballet Xiomari. Luego de un refrigerio, inició un panel de 4 expositores: Marty Ramirez, exprofesor de la Universidad

de Nebraska en Lincoln; Jim Ramirez, ex-docente de OPS; Thomas Sánchez, sociólogo y profesor de UNO y Carolina Quezada, directora ejecutiva del Latino Center of The Midland. Ellos hablaron de inmigración, racismo, estereotipos raciales, superación, familia, cultura, etc. “Cada uno de los participantes expuso comentarios muy positivos de este proyecto que incluso a nosotros nos sorprendió en su etapa previa de investigación”, dijo Garcia, al señalar que entre la calle L y Q, sobre la 24, se ecuentran 32 inmuebles designados nacionalmente como edificios históricos. El itinerario elaborado fue como un hilo que conectó el pasado con el presente, para comprenderlo mejor, y a partir de esa comprensión es que se espera que los participantes tengan las herramientas para “pensar y hacer” una ciudad más incluitiva en su distrito escolar, según figura el Centro de Humanidades de Minnesota y OPS. Si bien es cierto que el recorrido propuesto es sólo uno de los muchos posibles, fue sin duda una muestra bastante significativa que permite afirmar que El Sur es diverso, cambiante y dinámico: el Sur industrial y obrero, el Sur de veraneo, el Sur del ocio y la cultura, el Sur burgués, el modernista. Una parte distintiva de la ciudad que evoluciona y se mueve al ritmo latino. Por ahora no se sabe si será posible otro recorrido como el ocurrido, ni tampoco el tiempo que tomará ver resultados tangibles en el modo operacional de OPS, pero sí queda acentuado que se está trabajando en ello, al mostrar orgullosamente la diversidad que existe en Omaha, aunado a la necesidad de no perder esa y otras memorias que, al tenerlas presentes, permitirán una mayor armonia entre sus habitantes.

s fácil percibir que el Sur de Omaha goza de una personalidad especial. No es sólo por sus pintorescas calles o diversidad cultural, sino también por la memoria y personalidad de sus habitantes. Y esto es lo que se buscó presentar a un grupo de visitantes que forman parte de un ambicioso proyecto de reestructuración educativa. Cabe señalar que a pesar que la malla urbana no revela ninguna discontinuidad entre el Sur y el resto de Omaha, visitar sus calles deja entrever que la formación y evolución del barrio ha tenido una dinámica que lo particulariza respecto a los barrios vecinos, concentrando actualmente la mayor cantidad de Latinos en sus casas, negocios y escuelas. Con este entendio, el pasado fin de semana un grupo 35 personas se unieron al mencionado recorrido turístico, con objetivos educativos muy específicos. El proyecto surgió de la alianza que en el 2012 unió a las Escuelas Públicas de Omaha (OPS) y al Centro de Humanidades de Minnesota. Unión que busca ayudar a cada una de las 23 escuelas involucradas a implementar y/o transformar su práctica educativa, para lograr un modo de trabajo más efectivo, basado en la diversidad cultural de sus estudiantes y en los planes de desarrollo profesional. “Con esta actividad los maestros y administradores tienen la oportunidad única de integrarse más a la comunidad a la que están sirviendo, y al mismo tiempo aprender como está conformada actualmente nuestra comunidad y de donde vienen nuestros niños”, dijo Magdalena García , fundadora y directora de El Museo Latino, quien fuera invitada a fungir como estratega y guía del recorrido. “La idea del Centro de Humanidades de Minnesota es incluso buscar el modo más adecuado para que to-

t is easy to see that South Omaha has a very unique personality of its own. The colorful streets and cultural diversity, as well as the character of those who live there, make it unique. And this is what a group of visitors got to see for an ambitious project for an exhaustive educational restructuring. We must mention that, even though the urban environment does not reveal any huge differences between South Omaha and the rest of the town, one can visit its streets to see that the evolution of the neighborhood has occurred under a particular dynamic that is different from others close neighborhoods that is where high number of Latinos settle nowadays in all the houses, businesses and schools of South Omaha. Taking this into consideration, a group of 35 people took a tour last week with a particular academic goal in mind. The project developed from a partnership from 2012 that brought together Omaha Public Schools and the Minnesota Humanities Center. This partnership wants to help every one of the 23 schools involved by implementing new schemes and/or transforming the way they teach, by taking into consideration the cultural diversity of their students, as well as their professional development plans, in order to be more effective.
“With this activity, the teachers and the administrative staff have a unique opportunity to get closer to the community they serve while, at the same time, they learn more about the current structure of our community, of where our children come from,” said Magdalena Garcia, founder and director for El Museo Latino, who was invited to work as planner and guide for the tour. “The Minnesota Humanities Center is even thinking about finding the most appropriate method for making sure all communities are properly represented in textbooks. There are even talks about designing or redesigning the course materials at schools, so that they’re more inclusive,” said Garcia. And we must state that the difference between each of the neighborhoods in Omaha is very interesting, which is why this tour of South Omaha will allow everyone to understand the morphology of the area and of its population, offering an opportunity to review the origins and the urban and historical development of what is today called the “Latino heart of Omaha.” With that in mind, the plan was set in motion at the TAC building of OPS, going straight to Bancroft Elementary and then to Spring Lake Magnet Center. At this last location, a group of parents served as a welcome committee, and they talked at length about why they liked to live in the South
of the city, even if they were not of Latino heritage, which showed that South Omaha is not an abstract entity, but a collective creation with its own particular form and culture. The next stop was Our Lady of Guadalupe where Maria Arbelaes, of the University of Nebraska in Omaha, talked to everyone about the history of said building and the city. The next stop was the South Campus of the Metropolitan Community College, and Maria Vazquez was the one in charge of talking about this institution, highlighting its academic work for the community. The final stop in the tour once everyone had reviewed and analyzed during the trip the wide variety of buildings in the city, was El Museo Latino, were Mariachi Las Cecilias and the Xiomari ballet performed in a showcase of Latino folklore. After a lovely snack, a short lecture took place on topics such as immigration, racism, racial stereotypes, family, culture, overcoming odds, etc. The lecture featured four experts: Marty Ramirez, former professor at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln; Jim Ramirez, former academic at OPS; Thomas Sanchez, sociologist and teacher at UNO, and Carolina Quezada, Executive Director of the Latino Center of The Midlands. “Each one of the experts shared some positive comments for this project which surprised us during the early research stage for the proj-

ect,” said Garcia, who mentioned that between L and Q St., over on 24th St., there are 32 buildings which have been categorized by our nation as historic buildings. The itinerary served as a thread which connected the past with the present so that the group could better understand the current situation, and it is expected that said knowledge will allow everyone to “think and do” more for the city so that the school district can improve its service thanks to the involvement of the Minnesota Humanities Center. Even though the route for the tour was one of many that could have been taken, the one that was selected was very effective for showing that South Omaha is a very diverse location, dynamic and always changing: the industrial South, the summer break South, the cultural South, the leisure South, the bourgeois South, and the modern South. In essence, South Omaha is constantly evolving, and it’s a part of town that moves to a Latino beat. For now, it is not known if it will be possible to do another tour similar to this one, nor how long it will take for the results to be visible in how OPS works for the community, but what we do know is that a lot of work is being done and that it is being taken care of while showing pride for the diversity in Omaha, never forgetting each and every memory in order to promote true harmony among its population.

LOS NEGOCIOS DE PROPIETARIOS LATINOS EN NEBRASKA: MÁS FUERTES DESPUÉS DE LAS DIFICULTADES By Cheril Lee
“E
n el 2006, el sesenta y cuatro por ciento de los negocios Latinos estaban ubicados en el Sur de Omaha. Dicha región puede ser descrita como un emergente enclave ‘étnico’”, de acuerdo con la Dra. Lissette Aliaga-Linares, asociada en investigación con Doctorado, quien forma parte de la Oficina de Estudios Latinos/Latinoamericanos (OLLAS) en UNO. Los enclaves étnicos pueden tener muchos beneficios, incluyendo la creación de oportunidades de trabajo para los nuevos practicantes, y brindar además una posibilidad a los trabajadores para escalar dentro de la comunidad. Aliaga-Linares reconoce que dispersar los negocios Latinos por toda la ciudad puede ser una manera importante de alcanzar una clientela más amplia. “No estoy desalentando a que suceda, pero creo que invertir en el Sur de Omaha y fortalecer el rol de los negocios para hacer crecer la riqueza de la comunidad, podría tener un efecto dominó”, nos dijo. La presencia de los enclaves étnicos en ciertas ciudades en el Estado es solamente uno de los descubrimientos de un nuevo reporte liberado por OLLAS en cuanto al impacto en Nebraska de los negocios de propietarios Latinos. Aliaga-Linares compiló el reporte al analizar los Microdatos de la Encuesta del Censo de los EE.UU. del 2007 para Propietarios de Negocios, en su versión de Uso Público. Ella dijo que esta fue la primera vez que el censo ha permitido que dicha información esté disponible. OLLAS complementó el análisis al adquirir información de InfoUSA. “Todos los datos realmente nos ayudaron a entender la concentración de Latinos en ciertos códigos postales en las ciudades”, explicó Aliaga-Linares El reporte cubre el periodo 2000-2007 previo a la recesión y muestra que existió un fuerte crecimiento en el número de ventas y de empleos en negocios Latinos. Aliaga-Linares dijo que aunque esta información ya se conocía, el reporte definitivamente ayudó a los investigadores a entender las condiciones que explican el crecimiento. Ella dijo que existen un par de grandes descubrimientos en el reporte que recibieron mucha atención: Los establecimientos propiedad de Latinos tienen el más bajo porcentaje de sobrevivencia y

tienen menor probabilidad de expandirse en comparación con establecimientos que son propiedad de otros grupos étnicos o raciales. Independientemente de esto, los empresarios que sobrevivieron crearon más trabajos cuando se expandieron y retenían a una más alta porción de sus empleados. Es interesante saber que esta fue la tasa de retención más alta en el Estado. Existe una mayor presencia emergente de Latinas como propietarias de negocios. De hecho, las industrias de mayor crecimiento entre los negocios Latinos son las de cuidados a la salud y de asistencia social, en áreas como la de cuidado a los niños y a los ancianos. Estos negocios usualmente son administrados por mujeres Latinas. Aliaga-Linares dijo que el reporte también detalla muchas de las características de los negocios y de los empresarios Latinos. “La mayoría de los negocios son relativamente nuevos, iniciados con menos de $5,000 dólares y concentrados en tres industrias: servicios de asistencia social, construcción y gestión de desechos. La mayoría de los dueños de negocios son jóvenes, usualmente son hombres y un número significativo son nacidos en los EE.UU.”. Entonces, ¿qué quieren decir todos estos datos? El reporte sugiere algunas implicaciones sobre políticas, incluyendo más estudios en el futuro que revisen la expansión de los negocios Latinos, además de contar con un enfoque marcado en cuanto a promover las áreas de los vecindarios en donde los negocios propiedad de los Latinos se están expandiendo. “En general, existe una necesidad de fortalecer y ampliar el alcance de los servicios para la comunidad empresarial de los Latinos, en especial para las propietarias Latinas, quienes son las que menos posibilidades tienen de utilizar los servicios financieros”, dijo Aliaga-Linares. Los negocios propiedad de Latinos tienen una menor probabilidad de sobrevivir en comparación con otros negocios pues comienzan con un bajo capital financiero y humano, dentro de industrias tales como la construcción en la que hay mucha competencia y pocas oportunidades para llegar a la cima. Además, estos son negocios relativamente nuevos que tienen un mayor riesgo de fracasar dentro de sus primeros tres años. “Pero lo que es más importante para nosotros es el hecho de que los establecimientos Latinos que so-

brevivieron pudieron retener una mayor parte de los empleos que crearon. Eso nos hace ver mucho sobre la resistencia de los empresarios Latinos”, dijo AliagaLinares. En cuanto a la ciudad de Omaha, ella dijo que siente que ya se están llevando a cabo cambios. Muchos de estos cambios han sido gracias a los esfuerzos de las organizaciones de las comunidades Latinas que están trabajando de cerca con los empresarios Latinos. Ella comentó que existen muchos bancos y otras instituciones privadas que están proporcionando servicios financieros y que están conscientes de la afluencia de empresarios Latinos. Aliaga-Linares estableció que ella cree que muchas personas están comenzando a comprender que atender a la comunidad Latina requiere de algo más que colocar un letrero que diga “Se habla español.” “Es importante abrir la comunidad comercial de Omaha y a sus líderes en la ciudad a la diversidad y lograr ampliar el entendimiento sobre lo importante que son estos negocios para la comunidad y para la ciudad. Me gustaría poder ver imágenes de emblemáticos propietarios comerciales Latinos y Afroamericanos cuando llego al aeropuerto”, dijo. El historial académico de la Dra. “S
here are a lot of people who are being deported. These people are being taken away from their children, mothers, fathers and other family members,” said Cristina Topte, a twenty-year old criminal justice major at Northeast Community College in South Sioux City. “Sixty-four percent of the total Latino establishments in Omaha were located in South Omaha in 2006. South Omaha, then, can be described as an emerging ‘ethnic’ enclave,” according to Dr. Lissette Aliaga-Linares, a research associate/ post-doctoral fellow at the Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) at UNO. Ethnic enclaves can have many benefits, including the creation of job opportunities for newcomers and providing means of upward social mobility for workers within a community. Aliaga-Linares acknowledged that dispersing Latino businesses throughout the city can be an important way to reach a larger clientele. “I am not discouraging that to happen. But I believe that investing in South Omaha and strengthening the role of businesses in building the wealth of the community, could have a ripple effect,” she said. The presence of ethnic enclaves in certain cities in the state is just one of the findings in a new report released by OLLAS exploring the impact of Latino-owned businesses in Nebraska. Aliaga-Linares compiled the report by analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2007 Survey of Business Owners Public Use Microdata Sample. She said this was the first time the census had made this data available. OLLAS complemented this analysis by purchasing additional information from InfoUSA. “All of the data really helped us to understand the concentration of Latinos in particular zip codes across cities,” explained Aliaga-Linares. The report covers the pre-recession period from 2000-2007 and shows that there was a strong growth in the number, sales and employment of Latino businesses. Aliaga-Linares said though this information was already known, the report definitely helped researchers to understand the conditions that explained the growth. She said there were a couple of major findings in the report that got a lot of attention:
Cartas al editor: editar@abmenterprises.com Latino-owned establishments have the lowest survival rate and are least likely to expand compared to other establishments owned by different racial or ethnic groups. Regardless, the surviving entrepreneurs created more jobs when expanding and retained a higher proportion of their employees. Interestingly, this was the highest retention rate observed in the state. There is an emerging presence of businesses owned by Latina women. In fact, the leading industries of Latino business growth are health care and social assistance, things like child care and elder care. And these businesses are usually run by Latina women. Aliaga-Linares said the report also details many of the characteristics of Latino businesses and entrepreneurs, “Most of the businesses are fairly new, started with less than $5,000 and are concentrated in three industries: social assistance services, construction and waste management. Most business owners are young, usually men, and a significant number are U.S. born.” So what does all this data mean? The report suggests some policy implications including more studies in the future looking at the lack of expansion within Latino businesses as well as making a targeted effort to promote the neighborhood areas where Latino-owned businesses are expanding. “Overall there is a need to strengthen and widen the scope of services to the Latino business community and particularly to Latina business owners,
who are the least likely to use financial services,” said Aliaga-Linares. Latin-owned businesses have a lower chance of survival than other businesses because they start with low financial and human capital, within industries such as construction that have a lot of competition and little room to reach the top. Plus, these are relatively new businesses which have a higher risk of failure in the first three years. “But what is more important to us is the fact that those Latino establishments that survived were able to retain a high proportion of the employment they created. That shows us a lot about the resilience of Latino entrepreneurs,” said Aliaga-Linares. In terms of the city of Omaha, she said she feels there are already adjustments being made. Many of these changes have come from the efforts of Latino community organizations that are working closely with Latino entrepreneurs. She said there are many banks and other private institutions that are providing business services that are well aware of the influx of Latino entrepreneurs. Aliaga-Linares said she believes many people are starting to understand that reaching the Latino community requires more than a signpost saying “Se habla español.” “It is important to open the Omaha business community and its leaders in the city to diversity and achieve a broader understanding of how important these businesses are for the community and the city as a whole. I would love to see pictures of emblematic African-American and Latino business owners and their families, when I arrive to the airport,” she said. Dr. Lissette Aliaga-Linares’ scholarly background and interest focuses on informal economies in the USA and Latin America. She has conducted research in a number of Latin American countries, including Peru (her home country), Chile and Colombia, as well as the U.S.-Mexico border. In her role as a social demographer, she is responsible for working closely with scholarly and local communities to conduct and publish research on the socio-demographic changes and conditions of Latinos and immigrants in the Midwest and Nebraska in particular. OMAHA DE ALCOHÓLICOS ANÓNIMOS LO INVITA A SU JUNTA INFORMATIVA [Por Marina Rosado]
S
eré una alcohólica, pero bebía en las fiestas y no entendía por qué terminaba tan intoxicada. Cuando decidí parar, busqué ayuda en la religión, con psicólogos y hasta regresé a mi país para que me viera un brujo, pero me tomó un buen tiempo el acercarme a un grupo de AA y entender que padecía una enfermedad devastadora, que es como una especie de alergia cerebral que afecta tanto mujeres como hombres y que es terrible, pues en cuanto tenemos contacto con el alcohol, por mínimo que sea, se disparan todos los síntomas y terminamos inconscientes”. Para Michelle, quien lleva dos años sobria, el proceso para entrar a AA aunque similar, tuvo la diferencia de haberla llevado antes al hospital al igual que haberse visto involucrada en problemas legales al ser detenida tras manejar varias veces en estado de ebriedad: “Yo siempre tuve el apoyo de mi esposo (llevo 24 años de casada) y de mis hijas, y nadie veía mi alcoholismo como un verdadero problema porque yo ocultaba muchas cosas. Pero el tener que pagar por todas ésas multas y tener que tomar las clases y demás, sí dañó nuestra economía. Aún así yo seguía necia en lo mío, porque uno se amarra a la botella y se vuelve ingobernable, fue sólo hasta que imaginé cómo sería mi vida sentada en una silla recibiendo diálisis, pensando en la muerte y el dolor que le causaría a mi familia, que decidí cambiar mi futuro y buscar ayuda”. Ambas, Michelle y Graciela, acudieron primero a un grupo de AA ubicado en la ciudad de Lincoln, pero fue gracias al empeño de ellas y de sus demás compañeros, que finalmente consiguieron abrir un grupo en Omaha, el cual se rige por los principios del llamado Grupo 24 Horas de Alcohólicos Anónimos con sede en Mexico y cuya fundación se remonta a muchos años atrás. “Lo más atractivo de este grupo es que funcionamos precisamente las 24 horas del día - dijo

entadas en un café del centro de Omaha, parecemos un grupo de amigas que se reúnen para pasar un buen rato, compartiendo amenamente algunas anécdotas. Sin embargo, aunque en verdad que me siento bastante cómoda entre estas dos mujeres, lo cierto es que nunca antes había tenido el placer de conocerlas. La razón por la que estamos juntas es para hablar sobre el alcoholismo y la drogadicción en la comunidad hispana, por lo que respetando su anonimato, las presentaré como “Graciela” y “Michelle”. “Lo primero que quiero aclarar es que el alcoholismo y la drogadicción no son vicios, sino que son una enfermedad incurable, progresiva y mortal”, enfatizó Graciela, una mujer muy respetada por ser la madrina o espónsor del grupo. “Una de las características del enfermo alcohólico - añadió Graciela -, es que éste no reconoce su enfermedad e incluso la niega. Yo soy una mujer preparada, con estudios, con cierto nivel económico, muy involucrada en asuntos de la iglesia y muy reconocida por mi trabajo, pero jamás pensé que tenía un problema con el alcohol y mucho menos creía que Alcohólicos Anónimos (AA) pudiera ser una opción para mí. De hecho, crecí en México y al lado de la casa de mis padres había un local de AA, y yo creía que se trataba de un sitio a donde los alcohólicos iban para beber sin que nadie los viera. ¡Así era mi ignorancia! El alcoholismo fue dictaminado como una enfermedad desde los años cincuenta por la Organización Mundial de la Salud en Ginebra Suiza, pero para mí un borracho era aquel que bebía todo el tiempo, que amanecía tirado abajo el puente y que pedía una peseta en la calle para seguir fomentando su vicio. Jamás me consid-

Nosotros tenemos sesiones diarias y toda la información es confidencial porque nos basamos en el anonimato para permanecer sobrios”. El Grupo 24 Horas Omaha de Alcohólicos Anónimos, colabora con Douglas y Sarpy County, tiene voluntarios quienes ayudan en la correccional y cuenta ya con sus propias instalaciones. Además, el próximo mes de junio ofrecerá una junta informativa abierta al público en general, donde algunos de sus miembros darán sus testimonios de vida a través del programa. “Lo único que les pedimos a quienes vengan al evento - explicó Michelle - es que las personas sean receptivas y nos permitan compartir nuestro mensaje y experiencias. No importa su situación legal, a qué se dediquen o de qué nacionalidad sean. Enfermos o no enfermos, todos son bienvenidos”. A propósito Graciela comentó: “Nosotros sabemos que los mejores transmisores del mensaje siempre serán las personas que no beben. Y por eso mismo es importante que asistan a la conferencia, para que si conocen a alguien que padezca esta enfermedad, le comenten de nuestro grupo donde serán bienvenidos, siempre y cuando ya hayan tomado la decisión de no querer beber o drogarse más. Cuando un enfermo se acerca a nosotros, se da cuenta de que siguiendo los pasos del programa se puede evitar muchos años de sufrimiento. Después de la junta vamos a compartir rica comida, la música del mariachi y un divertido baile, pero necesitamos mucho su participación”. The reason we are together is to talk about alcoholism and drug abuse in the Latino community and, therefore, I’ll respect their privacy and refer to them as “Graciela” and “Michelle.” “The first thing I want to make clear is that alcoholism and drug abuse are not vices, they are incurable diseases, progressive and lethal,” said Graciela, a woman who earned the respect of the group as their sponsor. “One of the characteristics of someone suffering from alcoholism,” added Graciela, “is that said person does not acknowledge his or her disease and, in fact, they deny it. I’m a woman with formal education, who has a set financial status, very involved in all church activities, and I’ve been recognized for my work, and I never thought I’d have a problem with my drinking, or that I’d be in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). In fact, I grew up in Mexico and there was an AA location right next to my parent’s house, and I thought it was a place where people went to drink in private so that no one could see them.” She continued: “Alcoholism was ruled as a disease by the World Health Organization in Geneva, Sweden, during the 50s, but for me an alcoholic was someone who drank all the time, waking up lying on the floor below a bridge, asking for money on the street to buy more booze. I never considered myself an alcoholic, but I did drink at parties, not knowing how I ended up drinking so much. When I decided to stop, I turned to religion for help, I went to see
many psychologists, and I even returned to my home country to see a witch doctor, but it took me for a while finally reach out to one of the AA groups and to understand that what I had was a disease, a type of allergy that attacks the brain, and it can happen to men and women alike because as soon as we taste an alcoholic beverage, no matter how small of a dose, all the symptoms start to show and we end up unconscious.” For Michelle, who has been sober for two years, the process for her to enter AA, although similar, was different since she first ended up at the hospital, and she also got herself into trouble with the law after being held for several DUIs: “I always had the support of my husband - I’ve been married for 24 years now – and of my daughters, and no one saw my alcoholism as a real problem because I used to hide many things. But having to pay all those fines, and being required to take many classes, did damage our finances. Even after that I was still stubborn about everything, because you get hung up on the bottle and become unruly. It wasn’t until I started to picture having to spend the rest of my life sitting in a chair receiving a dialysis treatment, and thinking about dying and the pain it would cause to my family that I decided to seek help in order to change my life.” Both Michelle and Graciela first started to visit the AA group in Lincoln, but thanks to their work and that of the other members of the group, they finally managed to open a group in Omaha which is run under the principles of the AA 24 Horas Group in Mexico, a group that was formed many years ago. “The most attractive element about this group is that we work 24/7,” said Michelle, “and thanks to that we also have an annexed building where we send people who are in an advanced stage of the illness, and who need to be isolated for some time. We have daily sessions, and all information is completely confidential because
we base our actions on the principle of anonymity in order to remain sober.” The Alcoholics Anonymous 24 Hours Omaha Group works with Douglas and Sarpy counties, and it has many volunteers devoting their time to the cause, and they even have their own building. In June, they will offer a public meeting to provide information about alcoholism, and some of its members will talk about what their life has been after joining the program. “All that we ask of the people that come to this event,” explained Michelle “is that they are receptive and that they allow us to share our message and our experiences. We don’t care about their legal status, about what they do or where they’re from. Everyone is welcomed.” About this, Graciela said: “We know that the best people to deliver our message are those who don’t drink. Because of this, it is crucial that people come to this event so that if they know someone who is suffering from this disease, they can tell them about our group, and we will welcome them with open arms as long as they have made a choice to stop drinking or consuming drugs. When someone who is ill comes here, said person will realize that by following the steps in the program they will be able to avoid many years of suffering. CITY OF OMAHA YEAR 2015 CONSOLIDATED PLAN On Thursday, June 5, at 7:00 P.M., the Planning Department will conduct a Public Hearing in the Legislative Chambers of the Omaha-Douglas Civic Center, 1819 Farnam Street, Omaha, Nebraska.
