The World’s openly out lgbt athletes Russia will host the Winter Olympics in Sochi in six months. But what should be a good news story has instead become a battleground for LGBT rights.

With the Sochi Winter Olympics round the corner and the uncertainty that prevails over the law, Russian authorities could very well take action against LGBT athletes and spectators.

While there is a growing acceptance toward the LGBT community in many countries across the world, nations such as Uganda, Liberia, Nigeria, Zambia, Iran and Saudi Arabia have enacted anti-gay laws that are a blatant violation of human rights. Russia too has jumped on this bandwagon with its recently passed anti-gay propaganda law.

This is a clear contradiction with the Olympic charter that clearly says that sport is a human right and it should be available to all, regardless of race, sex or sexual orientation and the Games themselves should be open to all, free of discrimination.

The anti-gay propaganda law bans the public discussion of gay rights and relationships “anywhere children might hear it”. Those found in breach of it can be fined and, if they are foreign, deported. Critics say the law is so vaguely defined that it can be used to prosecute someone just for wearing a rainbow T-shirt or holding hands with someone of the same sex in public. LGBT rights campaigners have drawn parallels between Moscow’s actions and Nazi Germany’s persecution of Jews or apartheid in South Africa. 6

Protest efforts against the law are gaining international traction, however Moscow has shown no signs of giving way to outside pressure. Although there have been calls to boycott the Sochi Olympics, many LGBT athletes believe that it is very important for the world to show up in Sochi and be united in this issue, to bring light to and start a conversation about what is going on. TQC salutes the openly gay LGBT athletes who have made their mark in the international sporting arena.

10 fitness tips YOU SHOULD live by 1

Start and Maintain You feel lethargic because that is to what your body has grown accustomed to. A gradual start eases you into a more productive routine, to be more energetic and stronger. Walk around your neighborhood. Jog lightly until you perspire a lot. Run more until you’re gasping and trying to inhale every bit of the air around you. Start.

to you through muscle fatigue and soreness. Depending on the duration of your regimen, assign a rest period. This doesn’t imply working out for an hour on one day and skipping three days afterward.

6

Spend Correctly Say a strict NO to infomercials and the entirety of dubious products that Television dilettantes constantly hurl at viewers. Get the right shoes and clothing; join a gym if it is a specific area you want to target or if you feel you require constant supervision and instruction. Otherwise, gauge your current form and head out for a run. Freedom from the confines of time and space through running will give you that which you hesitantly seek.

7

Embrace Competition Between arrogance and deprecation, challenge and develop your capacity. Don’t exert yourself to collapse, but do engage in competition that marks your progress intermittently and not obsessively.

10

Take Inspiration Surround yourself with inactive, dormant kinds and you’ll inevitably become one. This isn’t a note to lose your friends, but acknowledge that groups with like-minded goals work for earned appreciation and mutual respect.

Variety Avoid boredom by doing anything from hiking to rowing, and swimming to tossing a medicine ball. This assists in core strength, flexibility, agility, muscle power, endurance and wholesome fitness, while sharpening your skills and honing your abilities. Dedicate Regular Time Would you accept post-dated cheques from an out-station failing bank? Similarly, procrastination through future compensation adversely affects your training. Thorough preparation calms you and regularity will imbibe discipline to use in other domains of your life.

5 38

Rest Adequately The frequently ignored and shamefully abused commandment. Your body speaks

No Holidays A trip to a hill station or a weekend in the countryside implies a break from work, but not from fitness. Mountain trails, dirt paths, and winding tracks are open and should be used.

Eliminating Excuses Run, Skip rope, do squats, wall press-ups, bench dips, and more. Whining that your music player isn’t charged, your favourite shirt isn’t clean, you’re having a bad hair day, none of that contributes and is irrelevant when your fitness is prioritized. Food Balance Ill-awarded privileges of fast food are a bottomless pit for many. Modest carbohydrates for runners, considerable protein for muscle-focussed and fat.

When the tomatoes are finished roasting turn the oven to broil. • Lightly mash the avocado with the salt and pepper • Spread one side of each bread slice with softened butter. • On the unbuttered sides evenly spread the mashed avocado among the insides of all 4 slices of bread. • Add the grated cheese right on top of the mashed avocado. • Place the slices of bread on a baking sheet and broil for 30 seconds to 1 minutes - just until the cheese begins to melt • Remove from the oven and heat a skillet over medium heat. • Divide the arugula in two and place right on top of the melted cheese and then add a handful of the roasted tomatoes • Place the other half of the bread on top to make a sandwich. Place both sandwiches in the skillet • Cook until cheese is melted and both sides are golden brown, at least 3 minutes per side. • Lower the heat if the bread gets too brown. • Serve immediately TQC
