Annual festival entertains Hayward locals Pioneer updates on America's president What happened?

Last Thursday, House Republicans voted 217 to 213 to pass the American Health Care Act or AHCA, the proposed replacement for the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as “Obamacare.” House Republicans introduced the AHCA on March 6, which proposed to localize and expand health care options at the state level and eliminate penalties inflicted on individuals without health care, according to a website created by the GOP for the bill Twenty Republicans and all 193 Democrats opposed the bill, which ultimately passed 217 to 213, according to the Washington Post. “The base of the Democrats believe in socialism and use health care as a policy area to advance public provision of service; Obama-Care was a step in that direction,” David Baggins, Professor Emeritus of political science at Cal State East Bay told the Pioneer. “The base of the Republicans believe Medicaid and Medicare were already too much of a step toward socialism and want to move the country back to capitalism. Health care is the battleground for a larger ideological clash.” The AHCA bill sparked controversy after a report by the Congressional Budget Office released on March 13 found that 24 million people under age 65 would likely be uninsured by 2020 due to higher premiums, the elimination of penalties imposed on people without insurance and cutbacks in Medicaid and individual policies. On March 24, the AHCA failed to pass and was pulled from the House floor, due to irreconciliation of the conservative Freedom Caucus—a congressional group of conservative Republicans within the GOP who vote together on bills and amendments—and the moderate Tuesday Group—a caucus of moderate Republicans, according to The New York Times.

A dancer in traditional garb takes a break from his Cinco de Mayo performance.

By Kamille De Guzman CONTRIBUTOR Several local ‘Ballet Folklórico’ companies, made up mostly of children dressed in colorful, intricate costumes, were the focal point of Hayward’s Cinco de Mayo Festival last Saturday. “I feel like the stage is my home,” said 14-year-old Jasmin Hernandez, a performer with the ‘Ballet Xochipilli Folklórico’ group. “I was nervous during my first performance when I was eight, but performing now feels like second nature. I can’t wait to do it again next year.” Roughly 500 people attended the event at the City Hall Plaza of Downtown Hayward, according to City Coun-

cilman Francisco Zermeno. An Aztec dance group, a local mariachi band, and a dancing horse march also performed at intermissions during the day. The Downtown Hayward restaurant, Metro Taquero, sold tacos. The festival, which went from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and featured a bouncy house, informational and game booths, and a farmer’s market, was organized by La Alianza, a local nonprofit organization, and City Council members Zermeno and Elisa Marquez. “I asked for the event to be more family-friendly, which was why we had more of the youth performing this year,” said President Martin Herrera of La Alianza. “It allows students to prepare for the festival during the school

year instead of during their summer vacation.” Preparation for the festival began in January, Herrera said. The Cinco De Mayo Festival started in Downtown Hayward in the 1960s by organizer Rey Solis. An annual festival originally took place in mid-September to celebrate Mexican Independence Day on the 16th. In the early 2000s the city council decided to have the annual festival be on Cinco De Mayo instead. Cinco De Mayo celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867), according to an article from USA today. Cinco De Mayo is known to celebrate Mexico’s triumph over their French oppressors and French imperialism.

“The reason why we celebrate this day was because of the success of those who have been oppressed,” Zermeno said. “When I usually teach the message of Cinco De Mayo to elementary school kids, I usually use the analogy of David and Goliath, and how Mexico was like David and was able to overcome their Goliath (France).” In response to the Trump Administration’s anti-immigrant policies, members of La Alianza handed out flyers on what to do if ICE — U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement — showed up at their doorsteps, according to Zermeno. The flyer explained that if an immigration officer comes to a person’s door-

Golden State Warriors have no time for losing Warriors sweep the Utah Jazz in quest for greatness By Bryon Pointer CONTRIBUTOR After running through the Portland Trail Blazers in a 4-0 spurt in the first round of the NBA Playoffs last month, the Golden State Warriors accomplished yet another 4-0 playoff sweep against the Utah Jazz, concluding the second round of the playoffs with yet another landslide victory. Monday’s series-ending game concluded with a final score of 121-95. Steph Curry’s 30-point game kept the Jazz at bay for the duration of the game. With as much as a 25-point deficit, the Jazz could hardly keep up with the Warriors’ fast-paced, run-and-gun style of play. Curry went 4-10 from outside the arc, and 9-15 within the perimeter. He ended with 7 assists and only had 2 turnovers. Although “Splash Brother” Curry erupted in the final game, he wasn't the

only highlight of the series. Three-time scoring champ Kevin Durant went off for a glorious 38 points in game 3 last Saturday. Shooting 58 percent from the field, 4-8 from behind the three-point line, with 13 rebounds, KD lead the warriors to a dominating 3-0 lead over the Jazz. Given the Warriors’ history with playoff injuries, some might have assumed that Durant’s early post-season strained ACL would have hindered both his efficiency and the efficiency of the

team, but that was not the case. Their performance in these first two series are proof that Durant and the Warriors are as poised and hungry as ever, standing 8-0 in postseason record. All signs point to a third rival showdown between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors, an intense bout that dates back to the 2014/2015 NBA championship when LeBron James — The King — fell short of another ring against the Warriors. Despite the Warriors’ 73-9 record last year,

the Cav’s and the Warriors found themselves matched up again in the rematch of the season. This time King James refused to take no for an answer and the Cavaliers took home the cup in 7 games. Now, with both teams coming off of back-to-back sweeps, heading into the conference finals with 8-0 runs, fresh legs and high stakes, the stage is just about set. For now, we must stay tuned and stay in the moment, because each team still has one more adversary to defeat in the conference finals.

Can the Warriors steal back their precious championship cup from King James and the Cavs? Or will the Cavaliers send another devastating blow to Curry and the Warriors in back-toback championships? Both these teams are without a doubt the most dominant teams in the league. The Warriors are rostering four all-star players, which makes their team an unstoppable force. But the Cavaliers, led by King James, are an immovable object. Their battle will be one of sheer will.

2 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ‘Campus Sees Rising Tension in 2017’ : By Christopher Hester CSUEB STUDENT I was there for the whole protest. I was with the DISC staff when they decided to protest, when they wanted to make signs, and I walked out there with them when they were the first students to protest. I was there, messaging my fellow Queer-Straight Alliance members, who joined us in the protest, bringing the signs we held for homecoming. I held the Lin-Manuel Miranda sign, and I spoke after the hate mongers left. I call them this, and not some other name, because that’s exactly what they are. They came to our campus to spread hatred and fear. Last year, at the same time, as a first year student, I encountered them and ignored them other than one reaction, and they stayed longer. And this year, I decided to protest. I am a second year student here at the school. I am transgender and disabled, a low-income first generation college student whose life mission is to help people. I have seen my fair share of oppression, and I fight back against it every single day. I fight against hate speech as I see my community beaten and murdered in the name of “free speech” and “religious freedom”. The comment that there were “two sides shouting at each other, but not listening” infuriated me, for quite a few reasons. Those of us that were protesting were, for the most part, proclaiming our love for everyone, whether they are queer, or people of color, or have had an abortion, or many, many other things that were condemned by the hate mongers on campus. It is not up to the marginalized to “listen to other people’s opinions” when those opinions literally invalidate the existence of marginalized people and condemn them for existing. Just as well, there is no shame in the oppressed and marginalized voicing their anger and upset against those who continue to hurt them. It is not the responsibility of those who are systematically dehumanized and oppressed by the systems currently in place to listen to and comfort those who perpetuate that oppression. What the hate mongers were spreading was indeed hate speech, which should NOT be protected under the “freedom of speech” that those who like to spew hate speech often tout. The hate mongers were protected on campus, due to freedom of speech, but even then, “freedom of speech” means freedom to say something without being taken in under the law. It is not a freedom to say whatever one wants without any backlash or consequences. There was a real unity expressed between students on campus that day, including students that may never have had contact with each other otherwise. We, as students, spread our love for each other while the hate mongers spread their hatred towards us. There was a beauty to our unity as a campus and as a student body against what was truly, honestly, hate speech. That should not be thrown aside as “not listening to the other side”.

Letter to the Editor By Catherine Cyr CSUEB STAFF I wanted to comment on your article by Daniel McGuire on the religious group that comes onto campus every so often. I honestly think that they may have a little scam going. The” yelling man”, as I had always called him, is verbally abusive to anyone who walks by, as the article noted. I have noticed that they always film when they are here and I have wondered why. I spoke with one of the students with ASI to congratulate them on standing up for themselves and their fellow students when this “man” was being verbally abusive to them. As we discussed this situation I brought up that they always film when they are here. One student suggested that they are trying to get him assaulted and then sue the school. The Westboro Baptist Church uses frivolous lawsuits to try

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

to get money all of the time. I did not get the student’s name, but I think he hit the nail on the head. It all ties together, coming to a state school that has insurance, trying for hours to get into a verbal altercation with anyone who walks by – and filming it. Because of this “potential” scam and because they are verbally abusive to people, (such as calling one female student a whore, just because she walked by), I think they should not be allowed on campus. They have the right to free speech, (even hate speech), but they do not have the right to verbally assault someone or to commit slander, (libel, defamation of character, etc.), against one of our students, (or any of them for that matter). I do think that any student who feels that they have been slandered by them should know the law so that they can file suit against this “religious” group, if they so desire. *”The common principles in defamation of character cases are, basically, this:

1.Someone published a falsehood about another person. 2.That falsehood was damaging that person. “Published” doesn’t have to mean printed in a newspaper. It can be said on a TV program, on the radio, in a speech, printed on flyers – basically, it has to be spread somehow, intentionally”. Filming can go both ways, if they wish to film themselves, fine, but a student who feels threatened or mistreated by them also has the right to film them to prove their case. In the end, if this group is still allowed on campus, I think the best way to get these abusive people to go away is to walk past them like they don’t exist, film them and threaten them with lawsuits, or tell them, if you need money this badly, perhaps you should consider finding a job. *By Guy Bergstrom, Updated August 03, 2016 – quote taken from his article for “The Balance”, under laws of slander

THE PIONEER

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ digs deep By Stephen Freitas CONTRIBUTOR At 7:00 p.m. on May 4, groups of moviegoers decked out in costumes or their favorite comic apparel headed to movie theaters for the long-awaited sequel, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” Thursday was the first day the preshows of the new Marvel film began before its official release last Friday. The wacky group of ‘heroes’ from “Guardians of the Galaxy” first hit the big screen in 2014, driven by quirky remarks of Chris Pratt’s character Star-Lord and the jackass personality of Bradley Cooper’s character, Rocket, a genetically-altered raccoon. Based on characters from Marvel comic books, the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie pulled in a total of $733.3 million worldwide during its run and earned a 91 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Though these numbers aren’t as impressive as movies like “The Aveng-

ers,” “Guardians” had a lasting impact on audiences around the world. This time around, the franchise moves away from some of the wacky humor in the first movie. Don’t worry, there are still plenty of laughs, but the new film dives into deeper matters that can be difficult to discuss, like abusive upbringings and parental issues. Whether it’s the hardships that Gamora and Nebula faced with their self-proclaimed father, Thanos, or the feeling of abandonment felt by StarLord, who never knew who his father was, the issues are blended into the story in a way where audiences will not feel uncomfortable with the movie. These issues can be gut-wrenching and can resonate deeply with people who have experienced it. I connected with each character and can understand the hardships that they experience in the film. Growing up in a broken household filled with child custody battles and parents in different states led to many

issues that I still battle today. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is the 15th movie out of the 24 proposed movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as part of a plan by Marvel, according to a Marvel cinematic universe fan page. The plan consists of three phases. The first phase introduced us to the main Avengers such as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and the Hulk. The second phase brought us back to each character and their solo adventures, while introducing new ones such as Ant-Man and the “Guardians of the Galaxy.” During this phase with the individual members of the Avengers, we get to see each character’s past coming back to challenge them. Lastly, the third phase of the MCU started in 2016 with the third Captain America installment, bringing the audience down a darker path. Such movies as “Captain America: Civil War” dive into the very essence of what makes us who we are, bringing up the idea of right and wrong

and pitting the ones we love against each other, like Iron Man and Captain America. A pattern can be seen amongst most of these films: sequels are becoming darker than their initial debuts. All of the movies are in line to set the stage for the film “Avengers: Infinity War,” which will link all the characters from the different movies. If the films of the MCU stay on this path and tackle issues just as much as “Guardians” did, then moviegoers are in for one heck of a ride. I personally hope that the upcoming movies will have aspects of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” amongst them since they are technically the protectors of the universe. As a moviegoer myself, I believe that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” was a big success at incorporating real-world issues and showcasing them in a format for all audiences. The Guardians learn to love each other for their flaws, and we as a society can learn a thing from them, too.

Marvel breaks the cycle with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise By Daniel McGuire CONTRIBUTOR Hollywood has a habit of finding a theme, or movie formula, that works and then creates multiple movies based on the same idea with different actors. It’s as if they are repeatedly changing the cover of the same book. One recent formula driving Hollywood is superhero movies. The first installment of each superhero film is usually more popular than its sequels. The first Iron Man, Thor, and Spiderman movies are considered the best of the franchises by many people, according to reviews on the Internet Movie Database. I lose interest in many of the Marvel films because there is rarely much of a difference between the the hero and the villain and I get bored. Iron Man fights an evil version of himself, the Hulk fights an evil Hulk, Ant Man fights an evil Ant Man, and so on. The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is where Marvel starts to break this recurring pattern. Not only do each of the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy have something unique to contribute to the team, but the main antagonist of these movies has abilities that are mostly different from the Guardians. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” released May 5, is the second super-

hero movie Marvel has released in 2017, the first being “Logan.” “Guardians of the Galaxy” started as a comic book series, consisting of two different installments. The original Guardians of the Galaxy comic began in the 1968 “Marvel Super Heros #18,” according to a 2014 Wired article. This original version of the Guardians featured characters different from those in the films. The Guardians of the Galaxy initially didn’t have their own comic, but occasionally appeared in issues of mainstream hero teams like the Avengers. In 2008, the first issue of “Guardians of the Galaxy” was released, consisting of the same team that the films later modeled their cast after. The versatility in character development, for me, provides two things to the action movie experience: depth and memorability. When I see five people using different tools and abilities to fight an enemy, chances are I won’t catch everything being shown on screen the first time. With so much going on, I’ll definitely want to watch “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” a second time. When it comes to other Marvel films, the only thing I remember about them is how uninteresting the fights between the heroes and villains were. It becomes a contest for who can use the same superpower better.

“The versatility in character development, for me, provides two things to the action movie experience: depth and memorability. ” When those fighting in an action film aren’t playing a game of “who can use this superpower better,” it makes me think about what I’m watching. This excites me because in my experience with recent Hollywood films, I have to dismiss all rational thought as I enter a movie theater so the obvious plot holes that Hollywood assumes I won’t catch don’t cause me to dislike the movie. When watching a movie I find myself asking questions such as, “why

didn’t they just do this, or go here?” It’s become a habit for me to predict the outcomes of movies at the first glimpse of foreshadowing.Modern Hollywood plots are no longer engaging enough for me. The movies with challenging plots are the ones I remember best. When I see any kind of film, it doesn’t take long to recognize the formula used and think of other movies that did the same. Movie formulas are recycled constantly as new audiences experience these ideas for the first time. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” might not have the most complicated plot, but when trying to predict how the plot would progress, I found myself continuously having to refer to what I’d previously seen and what had already been said. With most movies, one clue is enough to give away the ending. Although the main plot of the movie is similar to previous Marvel films—a villain attempts to take over the city, planet, galaxy or universe— the means by which the heroes defeat the villain isn’t recycled as often as it has been before. While two characters in the movie have similar powers, they are not used for a majority of the final battle and are not ultimately the reason they succeed. I have to applaud Marvel for breaking out of this pattern and finally putting some depth into the heroes and villains of their films.

After it’s initial failure, two new amendments were added to the bill in an effort to appeal to both caucuses, a strategy which resulted in the House’s passage of the bill, according to the Washington Post. The Upton-Long Amendment aims to allocate $8 billion in resources over five years to protect enrollees with preexisting conditions, according to a GOP website dedicated to the AHCA. This amendment was added at the last minute in an effort to appeal to the Tuesday Group, which opposed discrimination against people with preexisting conditions in the bill’s first draft, according to The New York Times. According to the CBO report, qualifications for insurance would be based on age rather than income and insurance companies would have the freedom to charge up to five times more for enrollees 65 and over than for younger people. The MacArthur Amendment gives states the flexibility to control local insurance markets by allowing them to apply for waivers from federal insurance regulations that increase premiums, according to the GOP’s American Health Care Act website. According to the website, this was designed to lower costs for patients and protect those with preexisting conditions, as it prevents states from denying coverage to these individuals. The MacArthur Amendment was created in a collaboration between Tuesday Group member Tom MacArthur and Mark Meadows, Chairman of the Freedom Caucus, in an effort to unify the Republican vote, according to CNN Politics. Critics have expressed concerns over the AHCA’s rollback on the Obamacare protections of these cases and states’ independent control to decide what qualifies as a preexisting condition and increase premiums accordingly. According to Money, a subsidiary of Time Magazine that covers on real estate and investment topics, these conditions can range from asthma and C-sections to postpartum depression and acne. One of President Donald Trump’s major campaign promises was to repeal Obamacare, which was hailed “the most significant health care law in a half-century,” in a Jan. 13 article by The New York Times. The bill was based on a model that Paul Ryan, speaker of the United States House of Representatives, released in In June 2016, titled “A Better Way: Our Vision for a Confident America.” The model proposed five goals; repeal Obamacare, expand feasible healthcare options, protect patients with preexisting conditions, spur innovation and competition and preserve Medicare, according to the proposal. “Republicans have campaigned hard against Obama-Care but now really do not have a plan for what should replace it, so they have punted a tweak so they can declare victory,” said Baggins. “This issue is far from over. Ultimately I expect the promise of giving health care and taxing to pay for it will prevail.” The bill will now go to the Senate, where it must receive a majority vote of 51 out of 100 in order for it to pass, according to the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill will then undergo revisions by the House and Senate before it is sent to the president, who has 10 days to sign or veto it. “It remains unclear that any measure can pass both House and Senate,” said Baggins. “Democrats view the inability of Republicans to master this policy area as their means to a return to power.”

City Council approves further development By Tishauna Carrell STAFF WRITER The Hayward City Council on Tuesday voted 6-1 in favor of a proposal to construct a 144-room, three-story condominium building and a 93-room Marriott Inn hotel on Mission Boulevard, as well as a 2,775-square-foot urban farm on Berry Avenue. Council member Marvin Peixoto was the lone dissenting vote. The project proposal was created by MLC Holdings Incorporated, who claims it will create 64 new permanent jobs within the hotel and generate more than $1.6 million to fund park and recreation facilities in the Hayward Area, according to MLC Holdings President Charles McKeag. MLC Holdings Inc. is a subsidiary of Meritage Homes Corporation (MRC), a publicly traded homebuilding company that focuses on the development and accession of urban infill residential and mixed-use projects. “The project will occupy and bring new life to a large area that has been vacant for years,” McKeag told The Pioneer. “The resulting economic and community vitality will improve the quality of life for existing residents.” According to McKeag, the Marriott Inn is intended to be an upscale hotel with rooms designed like apartments, and would be Hayward’s first extended-stay hotel, which typically have kitchens and serve people who need temporary housing. “Hayward has an executive airport, a golf course…a university in our city, but we don’t have a first-class hotel,” Planning Commissioner Julius Willis Jr. told MLC Holdings consultant Chris Zaballos at an April 27 meeting. “A Marriott hotel would be a good thing.” Over the past six months, MLC Holdings had numerous discussions with representatives of Cal State East Bay. On March 28, university officials met with MLC Holdings to discuss possible collaborations between the CSUEB Hospitality department and the Marriott Inn, according to McK-

eag. It would take “some years” for the collaboration to come into effect, according to Dr. Chris Chamberlain, Chair and Associate Professor of the CSUEB Hospitality Recreation & Tourism department. The collaboration would allow students to use the Marriott Inn as a “lab” that could provide experience for students to gain event and hotel management experience, Chamberlain said. Morishita sent a letter of support for the proposal to Hayward Mayor Barbara Halliday on April 18, saying the hotel could be a good option for parents and athletes who often have to stay in different cities due to the lack of hotel options in Hayward. “In my personal opinion, having more hotels in Hayward would be good for opposing teams visiting and prospective students and parents who are trying to stay in Hayward for Welcome Day,” said Jose-Luis Rayas, athletics operations coordinator at CSUEB. The Urban Garden which is to be located between the hotel and townhouses will be developed by Farmscape, an urban farming venture that would provide residents with organic produce. It would be maintained by Farmscape and the townhome residents during the first year, according to Co-owner of Farmscape, Lara Hermansen. The garden would include 15 fruit trees and growing beds and is expected to produce a projected 1,200 to 1,800 pounds of food, according to MLC Holding Representatives at the meeting. Hayward Planning Commissioner Dianne McDermott expressed concerns about the potential for theft at the garden, and concerns were also raised over the potential of increased traffic on Mission Blvd. “My only concern is I don’t see an improvement in the traffic mess.” Hayward Business owner, Patrick Hendrix told Commissioners. “I have a business on Dollar St, and getting into Hayward, I’ve had employees just buried at the other end of town coming off of 580. The infrastructure for the traffic isn't there, this looks like to me like it’s just a mess.”

A precarious education East Bay senior reflects on undocumented student life By Daisy Ortiz SPANISH EDITOR Cal State East Bay senior Alejandro Bautista studied abroad in Mexico City in the Fall of 2016, but Bautista, a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient, became fearful during his stay that he might not be able to return to the country when the Study Abroad program ended. Bautista shouldn’t have been concerned about returning. He had an Advance Parole document that allows immigrants without permanent residency to travel out of the United States and re-enter the country if already approved for DACA, which he was. His DACA status legally enabled him to attend university and work without the threat of being deported. But because of the anti-immigrant rhetoric that filled Donald Trump’s presidential campaign that Fall, the CSU recommended he and others of similar status return to the U.S. before Trump took office because the university could not guarantee their entrance back to the states. Bautista ignored their recommendation and chose instead to stay in Mexico City through mid-December and finish his studies. In the routine security check entering the U.S., an officer, upon seeing Bautista’s DACA paperwork and his Advance Parole, said ‘he had it good’ because he was going ‘around the system.’ But despite seeing his paperwork, the officer still proceeded to question him on why he hadn’t fixed his status to a legal resident and when was he going to, but eventually let him through. The DACA program, implemented by Barack Obama in 2012 has approved over 750,000 people, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Qualifications for DACA include being under the age of 31 before June 15, 2012, living in the U.S. before the age of 16, committing no felonies and must be a current or former student, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. However, during his first 100 days in office, Trump did much to negate Obama’s policies. He signed executive orders for the construction of a wall at the Mexico-US border, increased U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and threatened to strip sanctuary cities of federal aid.

In November of 2016, CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White issued a system wide statement and promised the CSU would not comply with the enforcement of federal immigration laws, unless required by law. A week later, CSU East Bay president Leroy M. Morishita reiterated White’s stance as it pertained to the CSUEB campus. In that same statement Morishita recommended for students and faculty to participate in training sessions hosted by UndocuAlly, campus program that provides resources for undocumented students such as contact information for immigration lawyers. Two weeks ago, CSUEB added UndocuAlly to the official university website as a resource for students. Previously a link for assembly bill 540 was the only thing available on the CSUEB website according to Cervantes. They also include descriptions of AB540 and AB2000 — both of which exempt undocumented students from paying nonresident tuition fees if eligible — as well as information on the California Dream Act, which allows eligible students to receive state financial aid. The DACA program allows undocumented students to be legally employed only if certain requirements are met. UndocuAlly is also a training program that equips students and faculty with tools to better support undocumented students, like contact information for affordable immigration lawyers, said GANAS program coordinator Melissa Cervantes, who is one of the trainors for UndocuAlly on the East Bay campus alongside Carolina Hernandez, EOP counselor. Bautista has worked at Gaining Access ‘N Academic Success (GANAS) — a retention program aimed at Latino students and transfer students — since he transferred to CSUEB in Fall of 2015, and GANAS made him feel like he was part of a group or a club. Services like GANAS and UndocuAlly have made him feel welcomed and attached to the campus. “Melissa has really encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and to speak my voice,” Bautista said. Even though resources are available and Bautista has a good support system he still can’t help but worry for his family. The government now has his information as well as his family's information, based on his DACA application. “You know between right and wrong regardless but being a DACA student makes you more aware of it,” Bautista says. He would like to remind DACA students to “Get out there, it is a scary time but you’re not the only ones. We must build a sense of community within us.”

Cinco de Mayo celebrated in Hayward Celebration From Page 1 step, that they should remain calm and ask for the officer’s warrant. The flyer also explained that the person has the right to remain silent, for an immigration officer can use anything someone says against them. It asks that the person not sign any documents or speak to the officer without an attorney. Finally, if a person identifies themselves as DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), an immigration policy that grants undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as minors deferred action from deportation, they should ask to show their paperwork. The paperwork is vital for it shows proof that one is able to stay here under United

States policy. Students from Cal State East Bay promoted an Undocumented Student Summit that happened on May 7. The students talked about the resources that are available for students that identify as DACA and are first-generation college students. Resources such as UndocuAlly, Gaining Access N’ Academic Success or GANAS, and the Educational Opportunity Program or EOP are all programs that are available on the East Bay Campus for these students. “The atmosphere is always welcoming during this festival,” said Zermeno. “I’ve enjoyed planning and hosting the festival for the last 10 years. I love seeing the diversity of the Hayward community coming together to understand and celebrate Mexican/Hispanic history”.

The annual downtown Hayward Cinco de Mayo celebration took place near City Hall on B street on Saturday. The event was sponsored by La Alianza de Hayward, Friends of the Hayward Library, the City of Hayward and Hayward City Council members Elisa Marquez and Francisco Zermeno to name a few. According to La Alianza de Hayward, the day is meant to commemorate The Battle of Puebla that took place on May 5, 1862. The Mexican Army defeated a French Army who were occupying land in Mexico. The event was free and featured dancers, singers, bands, games, food and more.

Today, it is important for the Public to know that our US Federal Government has secretly STOLEN, DESTROYED, AND ENSLAVED our FREEDOM, LIBERTY, EQUALITY, AND CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY by secretly NOT ENFORCING AND NOT DEFENDING our 14th Amendment (to provide all its citizens “equal protection of the laws” against Crime and Racism) as NBC continues to secretly maintain and enjoy Their UNCIVILIZED ‘RACIST GRIP OF CRIME AND TERROR AGAINST THEIR KIDNAPPED AND TORTURED’ Asian-American Hostages who still seek TRUTH AND JUSTICE after being severely punished and confined by the US Federal Government (for 29 years) for being the ‘INNOCENT VICTIMS’ of Federal Crimes by NBC.

President Trump should STOP these FEDERAL CRIMES

THE PIONEER

Baseball continues to struggle in final series of the season By Marissa Marshall STAFF WRITER

The California State East Bay baseball team fell to Stanislaus State 1-3 in their final series of the season. “We just did not play our kind of baseball for a full game,” senior outfielder Marcus Wise said. “We would either start the game well and not finish, or we would start slow and finish strong. In our conference you can’t do that and win consistently.” Stanislaus, who is 34-16 overall, 2315 conference and ranked second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division, came ready to play in the first game last Thursday and handed the Pioneers their 5th loss in a row and their 9th in the last 12 games. The Warriors started the game on top as they scored 3 runs in the first inning. Senior infielder Gino Franceschetti hit a triple to center field, sending senior infielder Nick Ippolito home, then capitalized off of a throwing error by the Pioneers to put Stanislaus up 2-0. Stanislaus scored again shortly after. East Bay bit back in the bottom of the second when junior infielder Colt Parshall hit a strong single to left field, and sent two of his teammates to home plate and putting the score within 1 point. That was the only run the Pioneers scored for the rest of the game, but the Warriors managed to put two more on the board, including a home run by Franceschetti to solidify the 5-2 win. East Bay broke their losing streak in their second game of the 4 game series on Friday.

“They scored early, but we did not let it put us in a hole,” junior utility Dallas Dey said. “The Warriors put two runs in the board, as they scored in the first and second inning, but the Pioneers managed to strike back. Dey singled to shortstop in the 3rd inning sending senior outfielder Kris Bartlett to home plate. The Pioneers scored another run moments after when they took advantage of a Stanislaus error. Neither team scored in the 4th or 5th inning, but in the bottom of the 6th the Pioneers made noise scoring 4 runs, which was initiated when senior outfielder Daniel Goodrich reached on a fielder’s choice to shortstop and senior infielder Michael Thomas scored an unearned run. Sophomore catcher Matt Cantelme then helped East Bay add 3 more runs to their score. The sophomore doubled down the infield line and sent two runners home, then he scored on a wild pitch moments later. That inning alone helped the Pioneers earn the 6-5 win, despite the 3 runs Stanislaus scored in the 3 innings that preceded after. The Pioneers played their final two games of the series on Saturday, where they also honored their 12 seniors in between the two games. The wins amongst this senior class alone total up to 58 over the past two years. Wise, a 4-year starter, has been with East Bay’s program the longest, and has played 166 games with 114 career runs, which is 4th in school history. He is ranked 10th with 152 career hits.

Cal State East Bay sophomore utility Joey Dice hits the ball during the game against San Francisco State Gators held on April 23 at Pioneer baseball field, Hayward. “I enjoyed the four years here at East Bay with all of the accomplishments I have achieved with the team and individually,” Wise said. “I watched this program grow every year and I was able to be part of a record-setting team last year. Playing here has definitely made me a better player because I was able to learn from some great coaches and players as well.” Wise will leave the program as the all-time leader in stolen bases with 77; 25 of those stolen bases occurred in this season alone.

East Bay had an unfortunate senior day on Saturday, May 6th and end to the season as they lost both their final games. In the first game, they only managed to score 1 run, which was scored in the first inning by Goodrich. After that moment, Stanislaus took complete control of the game putting up 10 runs on the board, winning the game 10-1 and taking a 2-1 lead in the series. “We weren’t consistent. That is what it comes down to,” Wise said. “They were able to execute, so it became difficult to impose our game plan.”

In the final contest, the game was much slower and less runs were produced. Despite that, the 3 runs the Warriors scored in the top of 5th inning was enough to take ahold of the Pioneers 1 run. East Bay finished the regular season 25-24 overall and 16-21 in conference play, ranked 5th in CCAA North Division and 8th overall. Their piston in the rankings unfortunately concludes the Pioneers season as whole, and have disabled them from competing in the CCAA tournament.
