Event attendees applaud during the Freedom Summit, Saturday at Levi’s Stadium.

By Shannon Stroud METRO EDITOR More than 1,500 people from all over the Bay Area filled Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium in the Brocade Club last Saturday for an anti-human trafficking event. The Freedom Summit – dubbed “Not in our Town” – organized by Bay Area Anti-Trafficking Coalition had more than 50 local non-profit organizations at the event, each with the same goal: to raise awareness about human trafficking in the Bay Area. “We will not tolerate human trafficking in our town,” said Congresswoman Jackie Speier. “By being here today, you are fighting against one of the greatest evils of our time.”

The event also aimed to bring awareness to the amount of human trafficking that can occur during large sporting events like the Super Bowl. Betty Ann Boeving, Founder and Executive Director of BAATC, explained that local authorities have started to train over 7,000 volunteers in the Bay Area for the Super Bowl to keep a look out for any suspicious activity in regards to trafficking. Brad Myles, Chief executive officer for the Polaris Project — an organization that runs the call centers for the National Human trafficking hotline — explained that this is the first time that an event of this size for a Super Bowl has happened nine months before the game. Twenty speakers from different organizations spoke about their ties to human trafficking including organization

leaders, survivors and law enforcement. Speaker Brooke Axtell, a survivor of sex trafficking and Director of Communications and Engagement for Allies Against Slavery, left event attendees in tears as she shared statistics about child sex trafficking in the United States. Axtell explained that 55% of child pornography is from the United States and that one of five pornographic videos online consists of child pornography. “People always ask me, ‘How can this happen here?’ and I always respond, ‘How can this not?’ said Axtell. “This is our culture. We live in a culture where profits are more important than people. The first step in human trafficking is dehumanizing the person, turning the child into an object.” Half of all sex trafficking victims are

Piedmont band paddles back to Gilman St. By Sam Benavidez ARTS & LIFE EDITOR If Cole and Max Becker walked down Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, heads would likely turn at their respective green and blue hair. The Becker brothers, 19 and 21, are known for more than just their hair. For one, their band Swimmers recently returned from playing Soundwave Festival in Australia. The pop-punk, turned beach-pop, turned indie rock and roll band will celebrate the sixth anniversary of their first show at 924 Gilman, an all-ages, DIY music space in Berkeley on Friday, May 15. Prior to that first Gilman show in 2009, they played three shows in total; their sister’s birthday party, a battle of the bands and at a biker bar. “It’s funny, its not something that hits you until you realize you’ve been there for so long,” adds Max. “You realize you played most of your shows there. There are people who have showed up to every single one of our shows at Gilman.” Their growing fan base ranges from young teenagers to their college-aged peers. As it has been for many other successful bands, 924 Gilman Street for them is where it all started. “Having that place as a refuge when you’re 13 years old has really influenced me, knowing that there are other people out there that are into the same things I’m into, and who are accepting of who you are,” says Cole. Swimmers, formerly known as Emily’s Army, have undergone more changes than just their band name in October. With the replacement of Travis Neu-

mann, who left the band in 2014, Seb Mueller has taken over on bass, and Max moved to guitar. Perhaps most noticeably, their sound has grown and shifted somewhat radically as the members have. “We started writing 10 years ago. When you’re nine, 10, 11 years old, most of the time your influences are pop-punk stuff, and people who you’ve grown up worshiping,” says Max. “You get older and you start refining your taste.” Their sound is hard to confine to one genre. But singer/guitarist Cole is fine with that. “We never really want to settle,” he

Professionals unite for restorative justice By Louis LaVenture SPORTS AND CAMPUS EDITOR The CSUEB Criminal Justice Department and the University Role Models hosted their third annual restorative justice related event on Friday titled, “Working Together for Restorative Justice in the Bay Area: A Day with RJ Practitioners.” Restorative justice is a term that might not be familiar to many people. However California State University, East Bay has made it a priority to teach. According to Silvina Ituarte, a professor in the Department of Criminal Justice Administration, “Restorative justice represents a justice framework that emphasizes community harmony, building relationships and repairing harm,” Ituarte said. “It represents a philosophy of justice and set of approaches used worldwide to promote harmony and peace across an array of issues ranging from small disagreements to acts of genocide in Rwanda.” The event welcomed social workers, justice professionals, educators, counselors and more with a keynote panel that featured crime survivors and formerly incarcerated individuals who spoke about their experiences. Over 167 people pre-registered to attend the event and Ituarte hopes the school will continue, “to have a restorative justice conference on campus that will not only promote a campus environment of equity, justice, safety and compassion for everyone, but will also provide leadership in the Bay Area in demonstrating CSUEB’s commitment to these values.” Several attendees and speakers expressed a lack of commitment to the values that restorative justice encompass and many felt they have a direct correlation to many of the current issues in society today. “There is a serious amount of mistrust between minorities and law enforcement in America, nobody can deny that,” student Joseph Munoz said. “Look at Baltimore, Ferguson, Freddie Gray, people are fed up. How can there be a restoration of justice in America if we don’t even trust the people in charge and responsible for the parameters because of years of mistreatment?” The speakers came from all different backgrounds that included Dionne Wilson, whose husband was a police officer murdered in the line of duty in 2005. Her husband’s killer was eventually caught, convicted and placed on death row. Delia Ginorio is the Survivor Restoration Program Director at the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department and has become an unofficial expert on restorative justice. She has also been instrumental in bringing the issue into the world of law enforcement, according to CSUEB. This is the third event that CSUEB has hosted related to restorative justice. The first event in 2013 was a series of events titled “Empathy Week” that also hosted the Red Rover

FACULTY ADVISOR By Andréa Duprée COPY EDITOR “Get in, get out, get ahead.” That’s what the well-produced commercial for one of the Corinthian Colleges’ 18-month programs declared. Aside from the snazzy commercials, Heald College had “dress for success” uniforms and the enrollment counselors were well versed in “you’re the perfect fit” persuasion. Going to school in slacks, a sharp blouse, high heels and a spiffy blazer made me feel like a paralegal before I even walked into my first class on Heald’s Hayward campus. They even provided a rolly backpack with the school insignia on it chocked full of school supplies and my overpriced textbooks. Heald seemed to be the perfect choice for me, a young single mother looking for a good school to complete my paralegal certificate. Boy was I completly wrong. I got in, got out, but was far behind. Attorney General Kamala Harris’ website describes Corinthian Colleges as “A for-profit company offering postsecondary education through its Heald, Everest, and WyoTech schools.” Heald had a popular medical assistant program, so when the commercial mentioned a paralegal program I was ecstatic. In April 2015 the Department of Education slapped Corinthian Colleges with a $30 million fine for misrepresentation. The department said that the school misled students and loan agencies about the prospects for graduates to

find jobs. One of the perks that roped me into Heald’s program was the promise of an internship in my last semester and job placement upon graduation. Not only did I have to secure my own internship, but the first job I obtained as a paralegal was not from their program. After nearly a year of applying to law firms all over the Bay Area I reconnected with a family friend that was an attorney for an employment law firm and decided to give me a chance. According to the Department of Justice’s website, “Corinthian misrepresented job placement rates to students and investors, advertised for programs that it did not offer, and subjected students to unlawful debt collection practices.” Former classmate Samira Banuelos admitted she felt like “[Heald] was a waste of time and money.” Another former classmate of mine said she repaid nearly $17,000 in loans back but was advised by her boss not to continue repay the loans when she heard about Corinthian being sued. I saw an ABC News broadcast last week that stated a group called the Corinthian 100 has called a formal debt strike, meaning they are refusing to pay debt brought on by attending a Corinthian College. We were all swindled. Swimming in debt that we were tricked into by empty promises of an avenue into the career we were paying to start. The debt I accrued from Heald is upwards of nearly $25,000 at an average interest rate of 6.4 percent. So as if piling crippling debt on top of myself in hopes of a brighter

future was not enough, now I faced the betrayal of an institution that I trusted to prepare me. So when a representative of Heald contacted me and asked me to sign a petition to keep the school open I literally LOL’d. My education at Heald was overpriced and underwhelming. Yes I had a few good teachers, but overall the program did not prepare me for a real law office setting. The skills I have now after over three years of working in the legal field were learned because an attorney friend took me under her wing. On April 26, CCi announced it’s full closure of all campuses effective April 27. According to CCi’s website, approximately 16,000 students have been displaced by the school closures. Due to my personal experience, I am worried for each and every one of those students. Especially since Corinthian is heavily relying on other institutions to accept their cruddy units. Despite the fact that I had a 4.0 GPA my entire 18 months at Heald, I was turned away from Stanford, Santa Clara University and UC San Francisco when I applied for transfer because my units were not transferrable. My fingers are crossed for the students because in my experience the school was not honest about the transferability of their course units. But apparently Corinthian is trying to find placement for all of the students and “those efforts depend to a great degree on cooperation with partnering institutions and regulatory authorities,” said the website.

I walked away from Heald with an Applied Associate of Science in Paralegal Studies. That may seem fancy, but I had to undergo paralegal boot camp because the attorney I worked for said Heald had taught me nothing. Ouch. There is no way I would tell someone not to pursue higher education, or not to choose some sort of vocational or certificate program. What I will tell everyone choosing this option is, be diligent and do your homework. Yes, the homework assigned to you in class. But not just that, you have to do all of the research you can prior to signing promissory notes for school loans and enrolling in classes at whichever institution you have chosen. Do not just take the administrator or enrollment counselors word for it. Do the research yourself, ask a friend. Don’t make a hasty decision like I did. These days we have vast sources of information at our fingertips and almost everything on any institution of higher learning is public knowledge. I am not at all happy about the students that were displaced during this debacle. Especially because I know how hard it is to commit to education. But I am happy that cursed chain of schools was traded off. There is now a pending lawsuit being led by Attorney Harris against Corinthian Colleges. I hope she sues their pants off. I completed my program five years ago and I am still very bitter about the time and money I feel like I wasted at Heald. Corinthian schools are debt builders, time wasters and dream crushers. I’m glad they shut down.

With growing numbers of attendees and interest in these events Ituarte is hopeful that the school will be able to continue to host events like these.

Troy Williams spoke at the event about how he was serving a life sentence for kidnap and robbery before he was released in October 2014. While incarcerated, he founded the San Quentin Prison Report; a video and radio production program that airs stories on KALW 91.7 FM from the state prison by inmates.“I wanted to figure out a way to stay in the outside world while I was incarcerated,” Williams said. “The media a lot of times portray the worst image of inmates possible, but a lot of these people are bettering themselves and doing positive things.” CSUEB student Jamal Muhammed was impressed with the words of Williams. “His story is so amazing,” Muhammed said. “He is a true inspiration and an example for everybody.”

Activists initiate urban farm revolution Oakland Spring Rising attempts 40 farms in 40 days By Kris Stewart

ONLINE AND SOCIAL MEDIA EDITOR The city of Oakland is ripe for the picking, or will be after a group of food justice activists complete their goal of renovating vacant and unused lots into urban farms. The movement is called Oakland Spring Rising and their hope is to initiate 40 farms in 40 days. The purpose of urban farming, also referred to as urban agriculture, is to increase access of local food within the community as well as educate the community on sustainable living. Urban farming can be as small as planting greens in your backyard or as large as renovating an entire vacant lot. Leader of the Oakland Spring Rising revolution and farmer, David Grefrath, got his start as a farmer in New Orleans. Grefrath says the goal is to grow 100 pounds of food for 400,000 people per year using vacant lots throughout the city. “It’s really just to get a farm started or give a community garden a good lift,” said Grefrath. According to the website, Oakland Spring Rising hopes to “support existing community groups and new urban farmers to grow as much nutritious food in an urban setting as possible.” Each day a farm location is posted on the Oakland Spring Rising Facebook page informing people in the community where the farm location of the day is so they can join in the process. The organization officially kicked off May 1 at the Curtis Street Farm in Oakland. Since then, they have moved to several farms including Phat Beets Produce, Canticle Farm, Mindful Gardens and Dover Street Garden. According to a study commissioned by the Oakland Food Policy Council in 2009, the city of Oakland has 828 acres

Recycle This Paper

on public land capable of being cultivated that could produce up to 5 percent of the city’s vegetable needs or 6 percent of the city’s fruit needs. Before a farm can be built, the farmer has to be granted access to the land. Of course, there are several hoops — like city building, zoning and small business permits — that the farmer must jump through depending on whether the land is privately owned, government-owned or foreclosed. Last year, at the UC Berkeley owned Gill Tract, they raised 12,000 pounds of food to give away. The land was occupied in 2012 during a social movement known as Occupy the Farm. By 2014, they were able to legally farm. The movement was also made into a documentary about farmers who stopped the development of a shopping mall and condominium complex on a vacant lot in order to convert the available land into a farm. Grefrath was a part of both movements. Oakland Spring Rising’s main projects will consist of soil testing to test and treat soil in order to get rid of toxins and get it ready to farm. In areas where the soil is ready, they will offer free plants, seeds and compost to the communities who would like to start a farm. They will also provide animals like chickens and where appropriate, goats, bees, rabbits, ducks, herbal plants for medicine, bio char and mushrooms logs. “We are going to provide communities who would like farms with empowerment, with an ability for them to start,” said Grefrath. “There is so much beauty out there already that is just waiting to have a home, so I want Oakland Spring Rising to be able to offer that home to people, to offer that farm and garden space to people, so that we can open ourselves, our tables to each other.” Grefrath has also started a kickstarter page to assist with funds needed to fuel the movement. More information and daily locations can be found on the Oakland Spring Rising Facebook page.

She said that a young woman who has been sex trafficked, often have to fill a quota by her trafficker, she will need to find roughly 10 to 15 buyers a night, meaning that within a year that girl would be raped by approximately 6,000 buyers. Axtell ended with a call to action, she pleaded with the crowd to know what is happening in each community in regards to this issue, and then identify local anti-trafficking efforts and see how you can support them and finally build relationships with survivors. “Remember, that no trauma is beyond the transformative healing of love,” Axtell said as the crowd erupted in applause. Many types of human trafficking that were acknowledged at the Freedom Summit. Myles clarified that in California, besides sex trafficking, the most common type of trafficking is labor trafficking. He described that in the last year, the National Human Trafficking Hotline received over 3,500 calls about people being trafficked in California. The majority of them are in regards to labor workers who work against their will at hotels, restaurants, salons and even the men and women you might

We need to stop looking at human trafficking generally and start looking at specific types of trafficking in the world. By creating these subgroups, we can start eradicating a different type of trafficking in each area of the United States.” Throughout the day event attendees could listen to the many speakers, or visit different organization’s tables that were located through the Brocade Club. Local organizations like Ruby’s Place, a Hayward organization, Love Never Fails, an organization that works in Oakland and H.E.A.T.

8 NEWS Swimmers From Page 1 explained. “But right now, we’ve formulated a sound that sounds like us without being restricted to just one particular thing.” Classes and readings in feminism have also been a major influence in the band’s writing style as of late. “It’s a more conscious lens that you have to put on your writing,” says Cole. “We’re incorporating it into everything we do as I think everyone should. It’s not a huge transition; it’s just consciousness.” The lens hasn’t been for everyone, however. Fans of bands aren’t always open to change. “It’s been sort of like a weeding-out process,” says Max. “If people can’t hang with that idea, they’ve stopped listening to us, and I think we kind of want that. We want to be able to influence people to do good things.” Currently, Cole is enrolled at UC Berkeley; Max at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo; Mueller at Tulane University in New Orleans; and drummer Joey Armstrong is spending time living in New York City taking drum lessons. “I think it’s good for our personal lives,” says Max of the temporary separation. “I know way too much about the three of them. It’s good to get away.” The band has to be a bit more selective with their booking of shows, as it can be a logistical headache to gather them all. They have agreed to take weeks, sometimes months off of school to complete US, European and Australian tours. “I think we’re all ready to take semesters upon semesters off of school,” says Cole. “We’re ready to be full-time musicians.” For now, they are focused on the an-

THE PIONEER niversary show at the roughly 700-person capacity venue. “I’m just really excited. I didn’t start realizing it until this year, how much that place means to me, we’ve been there a lot,” says Max. “We’ve gone through phases where all of the kids that hang out there hate us, and then all of a sudden we get better, and we tour, and people love us again. We’ve gone through so much with that place, and it’s an exciting feeling.” Up next for the band is a summer of pre-recording of new material, recording with their new producer, Zac Carper from skate-punk band Fidlar, and a couple years of touring.

THE PIONEER

No place for Hack-a-Shaq in modern NBA By Erik Khan CONTRIBUTOR The NBA Playoffs are unfolding in front of us and teams are doing whatever they can to gain an advantage. That means that some teams are implementing the “Hack-a-Shaq” strategy to the discontent of many fans, because it slows down the normally fast-paced game. In the modern NBA, there is no place for this tactic. The Hack-a-Shaq strategy is simple. Whenever a player who is a poor free throw shooter is on the court, the opposing team intentionally fouls him resulting in two free throw opportunities. Since the player is bad at this basic chore, he will usually miss one or both shots and give possession back to the team that committed the foul. Think Hack-a-Shaq seems a bit greedy and unfair? It is. The NBA made this scheme useless in the last two minutes of the game, as an intentional foul to a non-ball handler results in two shots and possession of the ball. Urban legend claims this rule was implemented to protect Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain, who often was a victim of these fouls. In late game situations, Chamberlain would regularly run away from the other team to avoid being fouled. Hack-a-Shaq was made popular in modern times by former Dallas Mavericks head coach Don Nelson who instructed his team to foul the Chicago Bulls Dennis Rodman when the two teams played. The term Hack-a-Shaq refers to Shaquille O’Neal, a player who was the target of the game plan on many occasions during NBA games. This technique forces the head coach of a team to decide whether or not to

take a player out of the game due to his inability to shoot free throws or leave him in and risk his missing. Many big men in this league are dominant on the defensive end and excellent rebounders but are less than stellar from the line. Golden State Warriors center Andrew Bogut is a perfect example. Through

eight games in the 2015 NBA Playoffs, Bogut has shot 25 percent from the freethrow line. If the Memphis Grizzlies, the Warriors current playoff opponent, or anyone they face down the road implements Hack-a-Bogut, the Warriors championship aspirations could be in serious trouble.

Other teams are already facing this unfortunate reality. However, the strategy doesn’t always prove to be marginally beneficial for the team committing the fouls. When the Los Angeles Clippers played Houston Rockets on Sunday night, the Rockets intentionally fouled Clippers center DeAndre Jordan 17

times, resulting in Jordan finishing the game 14-34 from the line. The Rockets failed to take advantage of this, only scoring three more points than the Clippers on the 17 possessions following an intentional foul. Three points. These three points are clearly not worth compromising the excitement that the game of basketball brings. The fast-paced thrill that fans of the game have grown to love was sacrificed on Sunday night for three measly points. The Rockets lost by 33 points, proving how crucial those three points really were to the outcome. Not all are in favor of banishing Hacka-Shaq. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban recently tweeted his support of the technique asserting that someone should “Teach the guy to make [free throws]. Problem solved. You don’t need to change the rules.” Like Cuban, supporters of the method frequently make this argument claiming that these athletes are paid millions of dollars and should be able to execute on such a fundamental part of the game. I could not agree more. However, when a player shoots free throws during a game, it always happens as a result of a player being fouled while attempting a shot. With Hack-a-Shaq, this is never the case. The team implementing this game plan is intentionally exploiting this inability by specifically targeting that specific player. The solution to the problem presented by Hack-a-Shaq is simple. Make the rules within the last two minutes apply throughout the game. This would render Hack-a-Shaq useless. Fans would not have to sit and watch countless free throw misses and instead would get to enjoy the fast-paced product they have grown to love.
