LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, It is no secret that this season’s A Philly POPS Christmas was one for the books. Fitting flawlessly into our 40th Anniversary Season, our guest vocalist Mandy Gonzalez raised the bar for each and every show — singing renditions of “Mary Did You Know” and Marvin Hamlisch’s “Chanukah Lights” that no one will soon forget. At the same time, our Music Director-Designate Todd Ellison masterfully took the reins, directing the full Philly POPS orchestra, three choirs, and a singing Santa with his trademark zip and spontaneity. It goes without saying, but these 300 performers we had onstage made “the most wonderful time of the year” even better! Now, as we move through our 40 Anniversary Season, we come to one of the Philadelphia’s iconic, seminal art forms: jazz. th

Philadelphia has long been a hotbed for jazz legends, such as Billie Holliday, Dizzy Gillespie, Grover Washington Jr., and John Coltrane. Philly has played a significant part in jazz’s storied history — developing unique sounds and techniques all over the city, but most notably in North, South, and West Philly neighborhoods. Philly’s jazz clubs have a mystique all their own too, with clubs like Showboat and Pep’s Musical Bar setting the stage, and clubs like SOUTH and Chris’ Jazz Café carrying on that storied tradition for contemporary listeners. Tonight, we’ve invited two of the world’s top jazz artists: internationally-acclaimed trumpeter Terell Stafford and three-time Grammy Award winner Dee Dee Bridgewater, to help tell the story of Philly’s jazz. Together with POPS favorite and University of the Arts graduate Alita Moses, and The Philly POPS BIG Band, making its Kimmel Center debut under the leadership of the POPS’ Principal Trumpet Matt Gallagher, there’s sure to be something for every jazz lover in this one-of-a-kind program. Beyond the concert hall, JAZZED! highlights the POPS’ commitment to keeping jazz alive and thriving in Philadelphia. Our POPS in Schools and All-City Jazz Festival programs help students find their unique paths to university-level jazz studies, as well as foster a lifelong love of music. With great appreciation for your continued support of the POPS,

Terell Stafford, acclaimed trumpet player based in New York, has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Stafford is recognized as an incredibly gifted and versatile player, he combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism. Stafford’s exceptionally expressive and well-defined musical talent allows him to dance in and around the rich trumpet tradition of his predecessors while making his own inroads.

Over the course of a multifaceted career spanning four decades, Grammy and Tony Awardwinning jazz giant Dee Dee Bridgewater has ascended to the upper echelon of vocalists, putting her unique spin on standards, as well as taking intrepid leaps of faith in re-envisioning jazz classics. Ever the fearless voyager, explorer, pioneer and keeper of tradition, the three-time Grammy-winner recently won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album for Eleanora Fagan (19151959): To Billie With Love From Dee Dee.

Since the mid-1990s, Stafford has performed with groups such as Benny Golson’s Sextet, McCoy Tyner’s Sextet, Kenny Barron Quintet, Frank Wess Quintet, Jimmy Heath Quintet and Big Band, Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Alumni Band. Stafford with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, performed on Diana Krall’s Grammynominated From this Moment On (2006). John Clayton invited Stafford to perform with the Clayton Brothers Quintet and Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Stafford is a member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and they were awarded a Grammy in 2009 for Best Large Ensemble, “Live at the Village Vanguard.”

Bridgewater’s career has always bridged musical genres. Her first professional experience was as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Louis Big Band, and throughout the 1970s she performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, and Dizzy Gillespie. After a foray into the pop world during the 1980s, she relocated to Paris and began to turn her attention back to Jazz. Signing with Universal Music Group as a producer (Bridgewater produces all of her CDs), Bridgewater released a series of critically acclaimed titles beginning with Keeping Tradition in 1993. All but one, including her wildly successful double Grammy Award-winning tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, Dear Ella, have received Grammy nominations.

Stafford can be heard on over 130 albums. His latest recording This Side of Strayhorn has been hailed as “the first must-have album of 2011” and “genius.” Stafford is the Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University, founder and band leader of the Terell Stafford Quintet, and Managing and Artistic Director of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia (JOP). Stafford is renowned in the jazz world as an educator, performer and leader and has received countless award nominations and accolades.

Bridgewater also pursued a parallel career in musical theater, winning a Tony Award for her role as Glinda in The Wiz in 1975. Having recently completed a run as the lead role of Billie Holiday in the off-Broadway production of Lady Day, her other theatrical credits include Sophisticated Ladies, Black Ballad, Carmen, Cabaret, and the Off-Broadway and West End Productions of Lady Day, for which Bridgewater received the Laurence Olivier nomination for Best Actress in a Musical.

ALITA MOSES Alita Moses is a young, rising star establishing herself as virtuosic vocalist, songwriter, and entertainer in many styles and settings. She has graced the stage with Al Jarreau at the Montreux Jazz Festival, backed pop sensations such as Shawn Mendes and Vic Mensa, recorded with members of the Christian McBride Big Band, and was most recently featured on Grammywinning trumpeter Nabate Isles’ newest album. In the midst of all this, she maintains a career as a front woman for myriad bands of varying styles, such as Lohai (an electronic soul duo), Hudson Horns (a collaborative brass band), and her own self-titled project—reminiscent of Emily King and Lianne La Havas. Born and raised in Connecticut, Alita experienced many facets of the performing arts thanks to her parents, both successful vocalists in their own right, and the incredibly artistic community of West Hartford. From there, she continued her studies at the Univeristy of the Arts, graduating with a BM in Jazz Vocal Performance and making herself known in the Philly music scene. As of late, Alita is based in New York City, performing locally and internationally at legendary venues, clubs, and music halls. Whether on the stage or in the studio, she brings a natural warmth to each performance and astounds audiences with grace, soul, and a musical maturity beyond her years. Keep an eye out for her debut album scheduled to be released this fall.

POPS IN SCHOOLS: JAZZ The Philly POPS launched its innovative POPS in Schools program in June 2015 with the AllCity Jazz Festival. This annual celebration of music features a full slate of activities, including masterclasses led by POPS musicians and performances by the best student jazz musicians in the School District of Philadelphia. The festival culminates in a performance by the All-City Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Terell Stafford. Stafford — who is this weekend’s music director and guest trumpet — provides valuable insight for the next generation of jazz musicians each year by leading this stellar ensemble. This April, the POPS and its partners will hold the Fifth Annual All-City Jazz Festival. This effort has grown into a comprehensive program for over 200 high school students and now includes performances by the Temple University Jazz Band under the direction of Terell Stafford and the University of the Arts “Z” Big Band under the direction of Matt Gallagher, leader of The Philly POPS BIG Band. Throughout the year, high school students have access to POPS dress rehearsals and concerts at the Kimmel Center. This program connects Philly’s best jazz students with the best jazz musicians in the city, many of whom are Temple University and University of the Arts professors. School District of Philadelphia high school jazz bands, including the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts Jazz Band and Central High School Jazz Band, will provide Pre-Concert Entertainment in the lobby during this concert series. Today, POPS in Schools is an EITC-certified program that impacts over 2,500 students in the School District of Philadelphia with supplemental music instruction at four elementary schools and 11 high schools. Jazz music and education continue to be a key component of the program. As we celebrate the history of jazz in Philadelphia this weekend, POPS in Schools is committed to crafting the jazz leaders of tomorrow with mentorship from the jazz leaders of today! 12 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

BEHIND THE SCENES

The Meko Family: Three Generations of Trumpeters

John Sr., pictured in his local newspaper, after he won first chair in state band in high school.

The “Three Amekos,” as Eileen Meko calls them, in April 2016 after the Jazz Cavalcade Championships where Johnny won the Rick Kerber Award for outstanding trumpet (he won two years in a row!).

“In third grade, I found a trumpet in my grandmother’s closet and started taking lessons right away,” said John Meko Sr. The rest is musical history for the Meko family. John Sr. earned accolades throughout his school years, became part of the Reading Philharmonic as a teenager, and earned music degrees from West Chester University (where he met his wife, Eileen, a pianist and educator) and Temple University. He taught all areas of music education for 37 years. After years of playing trumpet in the Pottsgrove Community Band, today he is the conductor of the band, which has members ranging in age from 14-84.

John Sr. with his trumpet.

“I looked at Johnny when he was 2 years old and said ‘that kid’s got trumpet lips!’” —John Sr. “The three of us used to play together, but by the time Johnny was 14, I could no longer keep up with the two of them.” —John Jr.

John Sr. taught his son, John Meko Jr., how to play trumpet starting in sixth grade. “The nemesis of middle school trumpet players is braces,” John Sr. said. But his son did well, even with braces, and performed in the La Salle College High School jazz band and made several honor bands. Today, John Jr. is a member of the Philly POPS Board of Directors and is the Executive Director of the Foundations of The Union League of Philadelphia. John Sr. also trained his grandson, Johnny (who is John Jr.’s son) in playing trumpet in the classical style, which is a rigorous method that develops technical and musical skills. “He worked hard, listened to me, and practiced,” John Sr. said. “He got the jazz experiences at La Salle College High School, a fabulous training ground for young jazz musicians!” Today, Johnny is an accomplished Junior at Temple University, where he plays trumpet in the Temple University Jazz Band under the direction of JAZZED’s guest conductor Terell Stafford. For four years, Johnny worked as a co-op in the POPS office – subscribers will likely recognize him from the Kimmel Center lobby at concerts. 16 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

JAZZ IN PHILADELPHIA Home to some of jazz’s greatest musicians, The City of Brotherly Love holds a special place in the legacy of America’s Art Form. Throughout the 20th Century, as jazz began to popularize across the country, clubs and bars all across Philadelphia welcomed jazz legends and starry-eyed newcomers alike. And as Philly’s jazz talent grew, the city did, too. Jazz corridors took root in South, West, and North Philly — most notably on South Street, 52nd Street, North Broad and, Columbia Avenue — which would later become Cecil B. Moore Avenue. Bars and clubs such as Pep’s Musical Bar and Showboat led the way for today’s jazz clubs like Chris’ Jazz Café, and SOUTH.

Jill Scott, a contemporary R&B, hip-hop, and jazz singer and songwriter, is also a native of Philadelphia. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls (Girls High) and Temple University. Scott has released five albums, some of which have reached platinum and gold status, and continues to be active in music today, while also branching out to TV and film. Jill Scott Today, Terell Stafford leads his Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia and Matt Gallagher leads the Philly POPS BIG Band. Both are active educators: Terell at Temple and Matt at University of the Arts. Their award-winning student ensembles play frequently throughout the city.

Pep’s Musical Bar

While some famous jazz musicians were born in Philly, others moved to the city or passed through from time to time, visiting the famous clubs. Jazz musicians born in Philly include bass player Stanley Clarke, saxophonists Benny Golson, Stan Getz, and Jimmy Heath, trumpeter Lee Morgan, and vocalist Billie Holiday.

In keeping with its inspired performances of Philly’s popular music, the POPS is proud to present this concert series — celebrating Philly’s unique jazz tradition, and the talented jazz musicians of its neighborhoods — both present and past.

Lee Morgan

Notable musicians who moved to Philly include saxophonist Grover Washington Jr., saxophonist John Coltrane, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. The arts enrich all our lives and are an integral part of our culture and heritage. It’s why we support arts organizations within our community. They inspire, entertain, move, and inform us in so many ways. Without the arts our community would not be the vibrant and diverse place we enjoy today.
