LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

A Message of Thanks to Those Who Serve… Tonight, I extend to you, on behalf of the Philly POPS family and our Board of Trustees, a warm welcome to Verizon Hall for our Third Annual Comcast NBCUniversal I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders. It’s a particularly resonant way to kick off the holiday season, gathering together to honor these deserving men and women who, each day, make our community safe and secure. A special thank you for those of you here in the audience tonight: your commitment and your service are an inspiration! We thank Lt. Governor Mike Stack for serving as Honorary Chair of this evening’s event. Mayor of Philadelphia Jim Kenney, Police Commissioner Richard Ross, Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel and Joseph Brooks, President of Liberty USO of Pennsylvania, all have made significant contributions to tonight’s events and to the other Salute Series events through the year. This event marks a second collaboration for this benefit concert between the POPS and Comcast NBCUniversal, our Salute Series Presenting Sponsor. Brigadier General (Ret.) Carol Eggert, a Philly POPS Board Member, has been instrumental in her role as Vice President, Military and Veteran Affairs at Comcast, in making tonight and the entire series through the year meaningful to the 50,000 audience members who enjoy a Salute concert annually. I would like to recognize the ongoing contribution of the chairman of The Philly POPS Board, Sal DeBunda, as well as that of both the Templeton Foundation and KeyBank, who have supported this Christmas Salute generously and deserve a special thank you.

To our guests tonight from all branches of the service community, we wish you and your families an especially delightful Christmas season. Enjoy the concert!

Frank Giordano, President and CEO Encore Series, Inc., The Philly POPS

The Philly POPS Salute Series recognizes those who dedicate themselves to a life of service and commitment by celebrating their service on holidays of American tradition. The Salute Series includes large-scale, free performances on Memorial Day, July 3 on Independence Mall, July 4 at Philadelphia’s Independence Day morning ceremony and evening concert, Veterans Day ceremonies at multiple locations, and tonight’s Third Annual Comcast NBCUniversal I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders benefit concert. Salute performances recognize the sacrifice of those dedicated to a collective identity of American values and tradition, often in locations of particular resonance to those who attend. Salute concerts feature the presentation of the colors, the Star Spangled Banner and other patriotic music. Over 50,000 are expected to attend Salute Series events in 2016-17 — the largest audience for any Philly POPS concert series.

SECOND ANNUAL

A SALUTE TO THE MILITARY & FIRST RESPONDERS

DECEMBER 4, 2015

Every year, The Philly POPS celebrates the on-sale date for tickets to A Philly POPS Christmas with a bike giveaway event for children of members of the military, Philadelphia police and fire departments. In coordination with Comcast NBCUniversal, Amazon, L’OrÊal, National HR and a number of private donors, the POPS tripled the number of bikes donated this year!

JULY 19, 2016

GREETINGS: It is my honor to join with the Philadelphia POPS to welcome all those gathered for the Third Annual Comcast NBCUniversal I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders benefit concert. As we celebrate this joyous holiday, let us reflect upon the tireless dedication of the military and emergency first responders. The character and courage of these individuals and their families reflect the highest ideals of the commonwealth. Tonight’s event salutes those whose obligations call them elsewhere during the holiday season. Together in camaraderie, and in the spirit of Christmas, we honor all service members for answering the call of duty and the sacrifices they have made. I commend the gifted performers and staff of the Philadelphia POPS for hosting such a moving event, and I am certain this concert will have a tremendous impact on the audience. As Governor, and on behalf of all the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I am pleased to welcome everyone to tonight’s concert. Please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable evening.

It feels good to give back. And together with our generous customers and employees, Macy’s averages more than $1 million a week to initiatives important to you and your community – arts, education, the environment, HIV/AIDS, and women’s health and wellness. It adds up to $69 million a year. It’s a good feeling we can all share, and to us, that’s the magic of giving.

MAKE AN IMPACT The Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau proudly recognizes those who make a significant impact on our region each and every day: all members of the active military, our local police and fire departments, and other crucial first responders. We salute your unwavering dedication and ongoing service. For those of you not in uniform, but still looking to make your own impact, why not use your influence to bring the next major gathering of your business, volunteer organization or association to Philadelphia? After all, meetings and conventions generate billions of dollars each year for local businesses and support more than 188,000 jobs in the region. We’re here to help. MeetPHL.com or 1-855-MEET-PHL

It is the Soldier, not the minister Who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer Who has given us freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not the lawyer Who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the Soldier, not the politician Who has given us the right to vote. It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the flag. — CHARLES M. PROVINCE, USA
