LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, I hope that early February’s Sgt. Pepper Celebration was as amazing for you as it was for us here at the POPS! The visits to those shows by Preston and Pierre from 93.3WMMR and from Andre Gardner representing ClassicRockWMGK connected us with new folks from the world of rock ‘n’ roll. What a great way to honor the 50th anniversary of this album that changed rock forever! And Blockbuster Broadway is the same kind of groundbreaking show. Broadway was struggling when the next generation of hit-makers arrived with the blockbuster shows in the ‘80s. A seismic shift to Broadway driven by the very music you’ll be hearing at this program! POPS in Schools, our 12 school program with the School District of Philadelphia, brings us the lobby entertainment that you enjoy on your way in the door. That’s the GAMP choir or Franklin Learning Center’s ensemble performing today. More news on that program—our third annual All City Jazz Festival is newly scheduled on June 9 in the Perelman Theater, directly across the lobby. It’s now part of a day-long festival of jazz music partnered with the Kimmel and including all of the student jazz programs in the City. If you want to hear the best of our high schoolers playing some Ella Fitzgerald favorites, stop in Commonwealth Plaza before any of the Ella, Louis & All That Jazz shows in April. The Salute Series is set for its second annual Memorial Day weekend concert at the Mann on May 27 and for Independence Mall for July 3 and 4. These concerts are free to everyone. BLOCKBUSTERS AND THE MAGIC THAT IS TODAY’S BROADWAY! By 1984, the number of shows running on Broadway was at an all-time low of 21. Competition for Tony Awards became so low that the institution dropped the categories of Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Choreographer.1 Average ticket prices dipped below $30. 2 It’s been just over 30 years since then and what a difference! In 2016, audiences were able to take in 38 Broadway shows and today, average ticket prices are more than $120 (with many seats costing exponentially more. Ask anyone who’s trying to see Hamilton!). What happened to restore greatness to the Great White Way? Blockbuster shows came to Broadway. Since the early 1980s, when icons like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim dominated the scene, Broadway musicals have made us hope, dream, think, mourn, sing, dance, and defy gravity. The following is a chronological mix of many of the blockbuster shows that brought Broadway back.

After a successful run in London, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats opens on Broadway (and runs for a record 18 years). Even before the musical opened, Barbra Streisand's rendition of the song “Memory” makes the pop charts. Cats wins 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

After premiering in Paris in 1980, Les Misérables arrives on Broadway and wins eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Score, Book, Actor, and Actress. The epic musical adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel runs for 6,680 performances and is revived in 2006 and 2014. Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, which intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales, opens on Broadway. While up against the formidable Phantom of the Opera, it wins several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical. As of 2016, Sondheim has won eight Tony Awards — more than any other composer.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera opens and goes on to become Broadway’s longest running show (over 12,000 performances to date). It wins seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Director for Harold Prince (who has won 21 Tony Awards, more than any other individual), Actor, and Actress.

Following their success with Les Misérables, writers Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg open Miss Saigon, a show based on the Puccini opera Madame Butterfly. It wins three Tony Awards, including Best Actor (Jonathan Pryce) and Best Actress (Lea Salonga). A revival is slated to open this spring.

The Walt Disney Company makes its first foray onto Broadway with an adaptation of the animated film Beauty and the Beast. Following the show’s success, Disney commissions more Broadway adaptions of popular musical films: The Lion King (1997), Mary Poppins (2004), Tarzan (2006), The Little Mermaid (2008), Newsies (2012), and Aladdin (2014). In 1994, average ticket prices hovered around $45.

Another show based on a movie, Hairspray, opens with Broadway dynamo Harvey Fierstein starring as Edna Turnblad. He wins the Tony Award for Best Actor and the show takes home another seven, including Best Musical, Book, Score, Director, and Actress.

Wicked is an immediate hit when it opens on Broadway in October 2003. Though it loses the Tony Award for Best Musical to Avenue Q, Idina Menzel captures the Best Actress Tony for her role as the young wicked witch Elphaba, and the show also wins for Costumer Designer and Scenic Designer. By 2004, Wicked is the best-selling show on Broadway with over 99% of seats sold and an average ticket price of $80.

DAVID CHARLES ABELL Conductor David Charles Abell was born in North Carolina, went to nursery school in New York, and came to Philadelphia, his mother’s hometown, at the age of five. He attended Germantown Friends School for seven years, then moved to the Chicago area with his family. Having lived and worked in several different countries since that time, he now resides in London. Following three years of conducting Christmas Spectacular, he is thrilled be returning to the Philly POPS to perform some of the Broadway music that started his career back in the 1980s. At the age of 12, David joined the Berkshire Boy Choir, which was chosen to participate in the world premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass at Washington’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. David met Bernstein again while attending Yale University and assisted him on various projects during the last years of his life. After completing his studies at the Conservatoire Américain in France and the Juilliard School, he made his professional conducting debut in Berlin with Bernstein’s Mass. His association with Bernstein’s music continues: he recently served as Musical Supervisor for Candide in London and has been asked by Bernstein’s children to serve on the committee marking the centennial of the composer’s birth. David is most widely known for the two Les Misérables Anniversary Concerts (10th and 25th), both of which have become PBS fund-raising perennials. He regularly appears on radio and television in the UK, most notably at the BBC Proms, London’s annual music festival at the Royal Albert Hall. These appearances have included the Richard Rodgers Centenary celebration (2002), a world premiere opera (2007), Stephen Sondheim’s 80th birthday (2010) and the War Horse Prom (2014). Classical music, opera, and musical theater all contribute to a diverse career, unified by a serious yet theatrical approach. Recent projects include his Boston Pops debut with an all-Gershwin program, two European productions of Kiss Me, Kate (in his own critical edition), live accompaniment to the film Brief Encounter with the London Philharmonic, Carmen in Kansas City, and the Pulitzer Prizewinning opera Silent Night in Detroit. New Year’s Eve found him at the Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman, performing with the Prague Philharmonia, and he just returned from Cannes, France, where he conducted a program of American music last week. Next week, he will start rehearsals for Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel at English National Opera. David is looking forward very much to making his debut with Opera Philadelphia with Mozart’s The Magic Flute this fall, and to conducting the Philly POPS Bernstein centennial celebration in 2018.

JANET AND JOHN MARSELLA Janet and John Marsella are POPS subscribers, donors, and passionate advocates of the arts in Philadelphia. Janet is a retired school teacher. John, a Marine Corps veteran, co-owns and operates over 100 fast food restaurants throughout the Delaware Valley. The Marsellas are native Philadelphians, have been married for 48 years, and live in Churchville. Janet and John (who plays clarinet and saxophone) instilled a love of music and arts in their family — son Brian is a professional jazz musician in New York City and tours around the world, daughter Nicole has worked as an artist, son Jonathan plays drums, and 16-year-old grandson Fynn plays the cello and bass. “We have a lot of fun playing music at family gatherings,” John said. Janet and John are committed to keeping the arts alive in Philadelphia. They believe that learning music builds creativity, discipline, and

HUGH PANARO Hugh Panaro is perhaps best known for having played the coveted role of the Phantom in Broadway's The Phantom of the Opera over 2,000 times, including the 25th Anniversary production. In fact, Hugh is one of the few actors to be cast by Harold Prince as both The Phantom and Raoul in the show's Broadway production. Hugh made his Broadway debut in the original production of Les Misérables as Marius, the role he originated in the First National

RACHEL YORK Rachel York is a dynamic and versatile actress, singer, dancer, and comedienne. She is best known for her critically acclaimed Broadway performances in City of Angels, Les Misérables, Victor/ Victoria (Drama Desk Award) with Dame Julie Andrews, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Sly Fox with Richard Dreyfuss, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels co-starring Jonathan Pryce. Additionally, Ms. York has starred in the national tour of Camelot opposite Michael York, Putting It Together (Drama Desk Nomination) also with Julie Andrews, the national and London tours of the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Kiss Me, Kate (Helen Hayes Nomination), Dessa Rose at the Lincoln Center Theater (Drama Desk Nomination), Anything Goes (Ovation Nomination) and My One And Only for Reprise!, Ragtime, Evita, Summer of ’42, Summer and Smoke, Crucifer of Blood with Billy Crudup, and The Odd Couple with Jason Alexander and Martin Short. Her film credits include One Fine Day, Billy Bathgate, Killer Instinct, Second Honeymoon, Au Pair II, and her courageous portrayal of Lucille Ball in the CBS made-for-television movie, Lucy. Ms. York has also appeared on several popular TV series including Hannah Montana, Frasier, Reba, Numb3rs, Close to Home, Arli$$, Spin City, The Naked Truth, and Diagnosis Murder. In addition, she is the voice of Bitty in Higglytown Heroes and Circe on The Justice League. Ms. York’s debut solo album, Let’s Fall in Love, has been an enormous success since its release in January 2005.

He also created the roles of Buddy in the original Side Show (Sony cast recording); Julian Craster in Jule Styne's last musical, The Red Shoes; and the title role in the American premiere of Cameron Mackintosh's Martin Guerre. Hugh was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award for his performance in the title role of Elton John's Lestat, based on Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. He made his West End debut in the original London company of Harold Prince's Show Boat as Gaylord Ravenal, the role he previously played in the Broadway and Toronto productions. Hugh's performance as Jean Valjean in the Walnut Street Theater's production of Les Misérables earned him the prestigious Barrymore Award, for which he was again nominated after a turn as Fagin in Oliver! In 2012, Hugh was honored with the Edwin Forrest Award for his long-term contribution to the theater. A native of Philadelphia, Panaro graduated from Temple University and was awarded the Boyer College of Music Certificate of Honor.

ALLI MAUZEY Alli Mauzey last appeared on Broadway as Glinda in the 10th Anniversary company of Wicked, a role she also performed to critical acclaim on the First National Tour and the San Francisco company. Other Broadway credits include Lenora in the musical CryBaby, for which she won a Theatre World Award and was nominated for a Drama League Award, and Brenda in Hairspray (both on Broadway and in the original company of the First National Tour). Alli also originated the role of Lenora in the pre-Broadway production of Cry-Baby at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego (Theatre Critics Circle Award). Alli made her New York City Center Encores! debut in the role of Sydney in It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman and recently starred in the Off-Broadway production of Red Eye of Love. Regionally, she has appeared as Mallory in City of Angels for Reprise!, Snookie in 110 in the Shade at the Pasadena Playhouse, and Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors at The Muny for which she was nominated for a Kevin Kline Award. Among many voiceover credits, her voice can be heard as a series regular on the animated television series Alpha Teens on Machines. She has a BFA from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in drama and a minor in music.

THE PHILLY POPS FESTIVAL CHORUS The Philly POPS Festival Chorus, under the direction of Jeffrey Kern, is a 180-voice ensemble that performs with the Philly POPS for A Philly POPS Christmas and other Subscription Series concerts. The Philly POPS Festival Chorus began performing in 2002 and since then has performed in each holiday POPS series. The Philly POPS Festival Chorus is an auditioned, volunteer organization comprised of singers ranging from high school students to retired professionals. The chorus has performed with many professional artists including Lisa Vroman, Faith Prince, Capathia Jenkins, Ashley Brown, Lisa Howard, Lauren Kennedy, Rachel York, Alice Ripley, Ann Hampton Calloway, and The von Trapp Family Children.
JEFFREY KERN, Chorus Master Jeffrey Kern joined the faculty of the University of the Arts in 1991, where he currently holds the rank of Associate Professor. His responsibilities include applied voice, conducting, advanced piano classes, advanced sight reading, vocal pedagogy for teachers, musicianship, jazz ear training, styles and diction for vocalists, and classes for the Musical Theater Minor. He conducts the University Chorus, Handbell Ensemble, and various small vocal ensembles, while serving as head of the Voice Department. He has also acted as music director in the theater department’s productions of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Cabaret, A Chorus Line, Rodgers and Hart Revue, On the Town, and Weird Romance. Now in its 38th season, the official POPS orchestra of Pennsylvania serves a consistently growing audience of over 100,000 annually. Music Director Michael Krajewski and the 65-piece Philly POPS orchestra keeps listeners tapping their toes to an impressive repertoire of songs from colonial times to the 1920s up through today’s chart toppers. MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting, and that’s what probably steered me toward becoming a pops conductor.” He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream — no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I hadn’t tried.”

Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a major American orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony, and music director of Modesto Symphony — all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational, pops, and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of the Philly POPS. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra — we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and creating tributes to American popular music legends like Simon & Garfunkel and Carole King. “I feel that the Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia — it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellence in music and the performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynonna Judd, Jason Alexander, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography, and traveling — especially to Italy.

The Philly POPS Today Thanks to its passionate supporters, the Philly POPS is generating significant growth in ticket sales and attendance, with particular growth in the POPS subscription base. These advances are the driving force behind innovative programming for new audiences, meaningful work that benefits local communities, and a new slate of in-school education programs. The Philly POPS is breaking out of the concert hall and bringing music to the streets of Philadelphia and its surrounding towns. Look for POPS artists performing in pop-up beer gardens, city parks, leisure venues, public schools, and alongside some of the greatest vocalists of our time.
Salute Series The Salute Series, an expanding portfolio of programs performed on American holidays, celebrates those who serve our country, its cities, and communities. Performances including Memorial Salute, POPS on Independence on July 3, POPS in Philadelphia on July 4, and Veterans Salute showcase the magic of the orchestra to diverse and enthusiastic crowds. The annual I’ll Be Home for Christmas concert rings in the holiday season with a free concert for active military, police, and fire department families.
POPS in Schools POPS in Schools, an EITC certified program, enhances music education for approximately 1,000 students in the Philadelphia School District by embedding POPS teaching artists in ten high schools and two elementary schools to train, coach, and mentor music students. The Philly POPS is the presenting sponsor of the All City Jazz Festival held each spring.
POPS Outside Outside the concert hall, POPS Outside brings the talented and experienced musicians of the Philly POPS to unexpected places, including monthly community engagement experiences, free preconcert activities, and in-school events.

POPS IN SCHOOLS As Presenting Sponsor of the School District of Philadelphia’s All-City Jazz Festival for the last three years, POPS in Schools provides professional coaching and Master Classes on jazz improvisation techniques and popular music theory for all students at ten participating high schools.
