LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Lights! Cameras! Action! Music! Imagine you're on the set of Gone with the Wind or Ben Hur. Suddenly, the music swells, sweeping and grand, performed by a 65-piece orchestra accompanied by a 125-member chorus. This is music so perfect, so reflective of the movie moment that, as soon as you hear it, you can see it in your mind. This is a film lover’s dream come true! Be prepared for a stunning musical experience as Michael Krajewski and The Philly POPS, along with Jeff Kern and The Philly POPS Festival Chorus, transport you to the land of glitz and glamour as we present Epic Hollywood Soundtracks! You’ll hear the timeless and inspirational soundtracks to Hollywood’s greatest films, including The Sound of Music, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, and so many more. In May, get ready to rock with The POPS as we end our season on a thrilling high note! It’s the unforgettable rock retrospective Legends of Rock, featuring the highly acclaimed Rock Tenors — Micah Wilshire, Shem von Schroeck, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Rob Evan. You’ll be blown away by the chart-topping classic hits and epic power ballads of Queen, The Police, Journey, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, and great classic rock songs like Don't Stop Believin', We Are the Champions, Every Breath You Take, and Maybe I'm Amazed, just to name a few. If you've enjoyed this year’s programs of POPS magic, you'll love what we have planned for our next season! In fact, now is a good time to start “spreading the news” because we'll be celebrating the centennial birthday of the man himself, Frank Sinatra, this October with special guest star Michael Andrew, recognized as one of the best Sinatra interpreters in the country. Then, we'll highlight the music of two phenomenal singer-songwriters — Carole King in February with Tony-nominated vocalist Liz Callaway; and Billy Joel in March, featuring Michael Cavanaugh, the actor handpicked by Billy Joel to portray him in the hit musical Movin’ Out. Then, we're off to the “Great White Way” with 100 Years of Broadway featuring three world-class Broadway stars. And we'll close the season with the world premiere of Cirque Goes to the Movies, featuring the breathtaking acrobats and aerialists from Cirque de la Symphonie. Be sure to get your subscriptions early to reserve the seats of your choice at a great discount. Now sit back, enjoy this concert, and make your plans for 2015-2016. With The Philly POPS, it’s always showtime! My best,

THE PHILLY POPS:

READY FOR OUR CLOSEUP! BY STEVE HOLT

Why Epic Hollywood Soundtracks? According to Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski, it all comes down to one word: impact. “The biggest thrill of this program of movie music is to hear it performed live,” he explains. “There’s nothing like all of a sudden just hearing this music that you’ve always heard kind of in the background; you know it from that, and now it’s just surrounding you.” And Krajewski’s definition of “epic?” “It’s a

The film just celebrated its 50th anniversary — with a surprise tribute from Lady Gaga during this year's Oscars telecast — and is firmly established in the hearts of moviegoers as an all-time classic. at a time when some music lovers are worried about the future of the symphony orchestra, it’s just such an ensemble that often labors away on a darkened Hollywood soundstage, skillfully matching a freshly created score to the director’s visual ideas. The screen and the orchestra have proven themselves as a winning combination, thanks to the efforts of composers such as those presented in this program. But here are just a few of his gems: Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. There’s only one person with more Oscar nominations: that Disney fella.

PHOTOS BY PHILLY POPS MUSIC DIRECTOR MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI PRESENTED BY THE PHILLY POPS

The Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski is internationally known as a masterful maestro. What you may not know is that he is also an accomplished travel photographer who has turned his hobby into a skill that is worthy of attention. During this month’s Epic Hollywood Soundtracks concert series, we are displaying his portfolio in Commonwealth Plaza at The Kimmel Center in a POP-up travel photography exhibit. The exhibit contains 11 images from Krajewski's

for about five or six years, and it represents the perfect combination of his dual passions for travel and photography — each now enhanced by the other.

Giordano explained enthusiastically, “I couldn’t believe how magnificent these photographs were and that Michael had this hidden talent. We know how skilled he is on the podium with a baton; we

Krajewski talked about his hobby and this unexpected exhibit. “I always had a camera and took snapshots like so many other people. And, I remember many times feeling disappointed when I’d see my pictures after they were developed. What changed for me was the advantage of digital photography and editing. I can now take millions of pictures. I get immediate feedback, and I can adjust the photos to bring out light and more details. I now see beauty all around me, through my lens. As I’m traveling, I’m looking for that perfect photo opp. I actually slow down and see so much beauty around me. And when I come home, I relive my trip through the photos again and again.” You can view Michael’s POP-up photo exhibit at phillypops.org and see more selections on his website, michaelkrajewski.com.

PURCHASE INFORMATION Prints of Michael's photographs are available for sale on April 10, 11, and 12, before, during, and after the Epic Hollywood Soundtracks concert series. HISTORY OF THE PHILLY POPS® First launched in 1979, The Philly POPS was founded by impresario Moe Septee as part of his All-Star Forum with the highly respected Marc Mostovoy. It was Septee who had the foresight to bring a major national pianist/conductor to Philadelphia to serve as the music director — Grammy Award-winning pianist Peter Nero, who led the orchestra for 34 years.

“The best pops ensemble on the planet today” —allaboutjazz.com Under the leadership of Maestro Michael Krajewski and President and CEO Frank Giordano, The Philly POPS exudes a new vitality. Giordano says, “Our goal is to provide a music experience like none other in the region. Attending a Philly POPS concert should always be fun, even before our guests enter the concert hall. We love to plan surprises and provide outstanding music with exceptional experiences. Our Music Director, Michael Krajewski, is a first-class conductor who knows how to keep an audience entertained.”

It was designated as the official Pops Orchestra of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and has always been a significant part of Philadelphia’s cultural scene. The orchestra has played a role in the City of Philadelphia’s Fourth of July celebration since its inception. THE PHILLY POPS FRIENDS COMMITTEE

Dottie Giordano, Co-Chair “I was drawn to the POPS through my love of music. My husband Frank is the President and CEO. I serve on several boards alongside my husband and am delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of the POPS family.”

Cindy Wanerman, Co-Chair “A friend gave us tickets 20 years ago. At that first concert, I turned to my husband and said, 'I want a subscription.' We’ve been coming regularly ever since.”

The Friends Committee is dedicated to helping a wider circle of friends get to know The Philly POPS. The POPS brings the Great American Songbook — the work of popular composers and performers, Broadway tunes, and movie themes — to captivated audiences each year. We are certain that others will enjoy the celebration that is the POPS experience as much as we do, and our mission is to bring the enthusiasm we feel to everyone in the area. We thought that a series of community parties and get togethers organized through Community Hosts would be the right introduction for folks who weren’t familiar with the magic. We kicked off the Committee with three August events — one in Ambler at Cindy’s home, a second at Dottie and Frank’s Moorestown home, and a third at their cabin in Medford Lakes. In September, the Rittenhouse Friends were hosted at the Michaelson’s and, in December, we hosted a tree-lighting party back in Moorestown. Friends Committee events for this Spring are planned for the Cherry Hill area and for Center City. Let us know if you’d like to be a Community Host for one of our upcoming events, or if you’d like to attend a Friends Party in your neighborhood by e-mailing The Philly POPS Friends Committee at friendsofthepops@phillypops.org. We’d love to get to know you.

Find out more about The Philly POPS Friends Committee by writing to friendsofthepops@phillypops.org. Epic Hollywood Soundtracks | April 2015 | 31
