Featured Adoptions Training and Fostering a Special Needs Animal: Leo's Success Story by Miriam Orzol

Working with a special needs dog is an incredibly rewarding yet challenging experience for an adopter or foster parent. The biggest challenge is creating effective communication pathways between the dog and the handler. Once the dog and the handler have a system down, the training can progress forward and the relationship can build.

As every dog is an individual, each dog needs a specialized training plan which focuses on building confidence while building on the dog’s weaknesses. Each dog’s temperament, breed tendencies, and personality come into play when designing each dog’s training plans. The dog should always be set up for success, adjusting criteria as needed in order for the dog to progress forward.

Buddy, now Leo, was a 7-week-old Australian Cattle dog that came to Oregon via a SafeHaven Rescue Me transport from ‘Fetch Fido a Flight’ in Oklahoma. Leo presented a training challenge, as he was 100% deaf as far as we could tell. I started fostering him and began teaching him the basic behaviors every puppy should learn and master. I immediately started using hand signals with him, as well as rewarding him for any eye contact he offered me. It’s incredibly important to reward a dog with special needs for checking in with you! A dog with hearing impairment relies on checking in with the handler for the next command and needs to do so often, even with distractions around.

To teach Leo new behaviors, I started by ‘charging up’ or

contact, running back to me after exploring something and

classically conditioning him to the hand signal “Thumbs

Featured Adoptions Life on the Ranch: Leo's Story Continued by Chris Singer

Sometimes you just know when a dog is the right one for a potential adopter, or maybe it's the other way around actually. Sometimes you just know when that potential adopter is definitely the right human for that one-of-a-kind dog.

For Cheri Rich, it definitely didn't hurt her chances that she was willing to drive 128 miles each way from Crescent, OR, for the opportunity to adopt Leo. Cheri did this several times in order to meet with Leo and his foster parent, Miriam Cheri and Leo fell for each other almost immediately. Leo

There is No Such Thing as "Just a Cat" by Chris Singer

"Pets come into our lives to teach us about love... they depart to teach us about loss. A new pet never replaces a lost pet, it merely expands our heart."

At SafeHaven, we often get asked when is a good time to adopt after losing a beloved pet. While everyone handles a loss differently, there's relative no definitive timeline for deciding when to get a new pet.

For Miranda Stedman, she didn't think she would be ready anytime soon for a new cat after losing her cat Niblet on New Year's Eve last year.

"After saying goodbye to her, we didn't think we could open our hearts yet," said Stedman.

Nigel needs a perineal urethrostomy (sometimes referred to as a 'PU'), which is a surgery performed on male cats who have a urinary blockage or severe trauma to the penis.

Want to share your story and maybe have it featured in our Pet Press? Email marketing@safehavenhumane.com or post it on our Facebook page at facebook.com/SafeHavenHumane.

MEET LUCY

I adopted Lucy last year. She jumped in my lap upon our meeting, and away we went on our new journey together. She and I are both seniors. She has a huge personality! We play 'Hey Batter, Batter." She retrieves and bats balls back to me.

Lucy has two speeds: sleeping or running. She is a constant companion and never leaves my side. I am a retired, disabled lady, and she has me laughing all of the time. Her antics include sitting on chairs, loving her cat tree, and watching and meowing at birds and squirrels. Lucy also snores when she sleeps, and if I massage her, she makes 'ahh' sounds way deep in her throat.

Thank you, SafeHaven, for all you do for these wonderful pets that get another chance!

AN UPDATE ON ROCKY AND SHADOW

Rocky and Shadow came to SafeHaven in March via a Liberty Ride Transport from Oklahoma.

Hi from Rocky & Shadow!

We are loving our forever home in Utah. We would like to thank everyone who helped save us and transport us. You all helped start us on a journey that helped change our lives forever!

We have trained our Mom very well, she knows that we love peanut butter on our treats, we like to watch tv while laying on the couch, and we let her sleep in her bed with us. We may have chewed up a few things and tormented Mom's cats a few times, but she still loves us no matter what we do or get into. I still protect my brother Shadow when he gets scared but Mom is working with him and he is learning he can do things on his own without me being at his side.

We would also like to thank everyone at SafeHaven. You took such good care of and treated us so well. Thanks to everyone involved in our journey to helping us find our forever home.

"what the heck did I just do?" I just had my last child move out and now I get a puppy! But this little guy at 4 pounds was perfect. He potty trained so easy, I just had to keep taking him out every 15 minutes for the first couple of weeks.

When he got big enough, I taught him that stairs were not scary. My bedroom is upstairs. He warmed up to them really quick and I get a laugh out of watching his little tush wiggle when he goes down them. He follows me everywhere and on his first birthday he kind of morphed into an adult. He had been so quiet and never barked at people or other animals and never barked in the house. I wasn't sure for awhile if he even had a voice. He does!

Make an Impact Kids Can Make a Difference at SafeHaven At SafeHaven Humane Society, we know that even the youngest members of our community can make a huge difference for our animals.

Over the summer, we received a check from a teacher at Adams School in Corvallis. Mrs. Ash's 4th-grade class runs a Mini Mart, a cart with school supplies that kids are able to purchase. They have made a list of local charities, and the kids chose SafeHaven as the recipient of the school year's profits.

We are always so grateful when any group volunteers or does a fundraiser for us, but we are especially happy when those acts of kindness come from the youth in our community.

With all that said, there are many ways for individual children

Make an Impact Considering Fostering? Get the Kids Involved! by Chris Singer Did you know that children can make great foster care providers?

Fostering is a great way to introduce your children to animals and let them have the interaction and love of a pet, without necessarily making a lifetime commitment. Not only does it benefit your child to play with an animal and have a pet to take care of (ie learn responsibility)… but it obviously benefits the pet by saving a life that may have otherwise not had a chance.

One might think it would be hard for children to let go of a pet, but the reality is, the variety of new pets coming into the home can thrilling for children. Plus, letting them know how important fostering is, and the whole reason behind it is a great life lesson of giving and charity.

At SafeHaven, one added bonus for the kids is getting to name their foster animals. That might have been the biggest reward of all for my daughter (pictured to the right with two of our foster
