Blaze claims best friends NEIGHBOURS of the informal settlement Jim se Bos near Ottery are in mourning after a shack fire killed two residents in the early hours of Saturday morning. The tragic deaths of best friends Joseph Michaels (34) and Denzil Mentoor (45) brings the total number of deaths caused by fires to seven this year. It is believed the fire started at 03:00. Residents of the small informal settlement reportedly woke up to screams for help from the “inseparable” friends.

But there was nothing the close-knit community could do to save the men as the door to the wooden structure had been bolted shut with a chain and padlock. According to the Philippi police spokesperson, Lieutenant Lance Goliath, the cause of the fire is still being investigated. “An inquest docket has been opened and the police are investigating the case,” Goliath says. Mentoor and Michaels were burnt beyond recognition. Goliath says: “When the police and fire bri-

gade arrived on the scene, the shack had already burnt down. “After speaking to a family member, we still do not know what really happened. We will not speculate.” According to a daily newspaper, the community of Jim se Bos joined hands and prayed as they waited for police and fire rescue services to arrive at the scene. Informal settlements are notorious for fires, mostly due to paraffin lamps used by residents. Last year the City of Cape Town recorded a total of 1 200 fires in areas across the

metropole. Despite an alternative to paraffin – gel fuel – being on the market for a number of years, most people still prefer using paraffin, says City Fire and Rescue Service Command and Control Centre spokesperson, Theo Layne. “Most prefer paraffin, and it is difficult to change that. Locals aren’t interested in modern technology and also can’t afford it, so they stick with what they know.” Goliath encourages anyone with information on the blaze to contact the police on 0 (021) 690 1500.

Remembering your spirit Dear reader,

take him home with her. He protested by drawing a picture of me, complete with long hair – as opposed to her short hair – and then showing her who his mother is. To her telling him that the name he is known by was not his name, he promptly wrote down the five letters of his name. Although I was angry at the bad timing, I was very proud of my son for standing his ground and asserting his identity. I was also proud of his confidence; and ability to spell and draw. Sadly, he was traumatised after this meeting, constantly expressing his fear at being taken away from his home and parents. Through mutual agreement, a series of regular visits aimed at reuniting my son with his biological family has been scheduled, with the first one meant to have taken place today. I was relieved when the social worker informed me yesterday that the visit had been cancelled. But I know that future interactions are inevitable and that I cannot control the processes that may stem from them. What I can do is protect my son from hurt, remind all parties concerned that decisions should be made in his, not the adults’ best interests and continue to provide a safe, loving home for him. In a perfect world, I would have protected my son from some of his life truths, but as the older and responsible one, I know that life seldom goes according to plan. As I look forward to Ramadan and the peace and strength it will bring me, I am also aware that it will be a crucial time for me to choose the correct responses to influence a positive outcome for the child entrusted to me. ’Til next time, go well! We are well into the first week of Ramadan, a holy month during which Muslims throughout the world go without food, drink and physical intimacies from sunrise to sunset. The month is spent performing extra prayers (Taraweeh), remaining spiritually contemplative and repentant, and showing empathy and charity towards those less privileged. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and is known for its spiritual and health benefits. Those who have fasted for many years will know how testing a journey it can be. Foregoing food and drink is the easier part. Remaining steadfast in your spiritual resolve and resisting provocation is the hard part. It is especially trying when, in addition to the usual demands of your professional and personal life, you are faced with extra challenges. The beauty of being in a state of fasting though is that your body and mind automatically transcends base urges and, even if you wanted to lash out in anger at someone who has annoyed you, you invariably find yourself unable to. Usually by the end of Ramadan, Muslims feel sad for a host of reasons. Some regret not optimising the spiritual growth opportunity, others feel a sense of loss of the unity experienced, and many undertake to uphold the practices of kindness and sharing. My challenge as I progress through this month,will be to act selflessly and contain my emotions as I brace myself for one of the toughest challenges of my life; that of letting the little boy who has known me as his mother for five of his six years learn that he has another mother. Two weeks ago, my foster son’s life was turned upside down when he met his birth mother, whom he hadn’t seen in four years. She took him one side and quietly told him that she was his real mother and wanted to

Headache over water account LUZUKO ZINI

INORDINATELY high water bills have raised a red flag for a Lotus River resident. And payments made are not being reflected on subsequent accounts. Brad Leslie, of Gardenia Lane, says he believes inconsistent water metre readings are at fault. It has left him questioning the council about his water account. “The bill I receive every month does not correspond with my usage,” Leslie says. He adds the slow or non-response from the council office is making things hard for him as, he says, he is paying more for water bills than he believes he should. “I have raised the issue with people from the City of Cape Town where our councillor Leslie Isaacs was also present. That’s when the council sent people to check my water metre. They said nothing is wrong even though I get a huge bill at the end of the month,” he says. Leslie believes his rights have been violated. “Even though I have access to water, my rights have been violated because I have to pay large sums for services which are not up to standard,” he says. Another Lotus River resident, who spoke to People’s Post on condition of anonymity, says he, too, is experiencing the same problem. “I have the same problem. For the six years I have been living here my bill was R75 in the first month,” he says, adding he has paid this and other accounts, but these amounts are not reflected on later bills. He adds: “Last year I had to make a loan because the (accumulated) bill was R21 000. In six years my bill amounted to R21 000 even though I don’t use huge amounts of water. In some instances the bill will be low and the next month it can double. “The City gives us six kilolitres of water a month (for free) and my family of five peo-

ple uses about 15 to 17 kilolitres. The bill would come out saying we have used 53 kilolitres,” he says. The resident continues to say that the officials who read water metres “just estimate” instead of giving accurate readings. “My wife is home because she is unemployed and can testify that no-one has come to our house for water metre readings. Yet we get a bill telling us how much water we have used,” he says, adding they have a high fence. “I have gone as far as getting someone to check if there were any leaks and they did not find anything. Until this day I have not been able to find out why my bill is so high.” Lotus River ward councillor Leslie Isaacs says a number of meetings have taken place regarding the water metre saga – but to no avail. “I have been aware of Brad Leslie’s problem and various meetings have taken place where we tried to resolve the problem, but we have not come to a solution,” he says. Isaacs says part of the reason there has been no progress is because Leslie refuses to have his water metre tested. “(Leslie’s) old metre was removed and a new one was installed. At one of our meetings a suggestion of testing the old water metre was made and (Leslie) opposed that,” Isaacs says. Leslie explains why he opposed the idea of his old metre being tested. “They want to test if I did not tamper with the metre. My only problem is I don’t know how the testing will be done and don’t have a guarantee that their findings will be accurate,” he says. Leslie alleges he has been experiencing the problem for some years now. “I have been experiencing this problem for the past six years and to this day nothing has been resolved. “Last September my bill was about R80 and today it is R12 000,” he says. He says he has stopped making payments as these are not reflected on his water account.

A ‘PEACE deal’ believed to have been struck between rival gangs in Lavender Hill has been met with mixed emotions from the community. Yesterday the community of Lavender Hill heard news of a deal between rival gangs – Junky Funky Kids, Mongrels and Corner Boys – which could see the end of gang wars and senseless killings. The gang wars, believed to be over drug turf, have riddled the communities of Lavender Hill, Steenberg and Seawinds since 2010. Steenberg Community Police Forum Chairperson (CPF) Kevin Southgate believes this treaty is a positive sign. “From what I know the initiative to get the gang leaders to talk and try to resolve their differences was organised by religious stakeholders. This is great because things can get better,” he says. Southgate adds this is not the first time an agreement of this nature has been reached. However, he remains sceptical. “We have been down this road before where the gangsters say they have made peace and a couple of weeks later things go back to the way they were,” he says. Proportional representative councillor Llewellyn Jordaan believes the gangsters need guidance to make better choices. “There was mediation between the rival gangs and after the two weeks of negotiation they finally agreed to meet. They need our support so they can change,” he comments. “The gangs need to own up and accept responsibility by apologising to the community, even though that may not bring back those who have died.”

Southgate says this may be part of the gangs’ strategic plan to shift focus. “In December we had this sort of deal being made and in February the killings began again. I hope this (treaty) will last and everyone will stick to what they promised, so that we can have a better future,” he says. “I support these initiatives,” he says “because they will bring change so that we can at least live in safer communities.” Pastor Peter Solomons from Lavender Hill believes it may take a while before things are

sorted. “An agreement between rival gangs has been reached and we, as community leaders, understand things may take time, but this is a step in the right direction,” he says. Southgate says the Steenberg CPF did not attend the “peace agreement” signing. “We, as the CPF, were not mandated by the community to attend. Our policy, as the CPF, is to establish and maintain relationships with the police and help create safety,” he says. “Even though we may not have attended meetings, we support the attempts made to make a difference.” People’s Post attempted to gain comment from Steenberg police, but was unable to do so at the time of going to print.

Cops on civvy duty – a joke or not? A DECISION by the SA police services authorities to cancel private contracts – including guards at gates and cleaning services – has been met with ridicule. The official opposition, the DA, has reportedly said nobody will take seriously a police officer with a “mop in hand”.

DA spokesperson Dianne Kohler Barnard said in a statement: “This means we have fewer cops on the streets and more in police offices taking responsibility for non-core duties.” People’s Post reporters Teresa Fischer, Laila Majiet and Summer Jacobs polled readers for their views.

Braille insight into law LUZUKO ZINI

LOSING his sight has helped a blind man envision – and act upon – knowing his rights. Sergil January, of the League of Friends of the Blind (Lofob), says: “When I could see, I was blind, but now that I’m physically blind I can see a better future ahead of me.” January’s improved understanding comes after receiving booklets – in Braille – from the provincial justice department on Wednesday. Lofob Executive Director Phillip Bam says the booklets will motivate blind people to know their rights and be able to access the laws of the country.

“The booklets from the department are about domestic abuse and children’s rights,” says Bam. “These booklets will make information accessible to blind people and that will motivate them.” A shooting incident left January without sight. “I became blind after being shot in the head in 2006,” he says. “I was at a friend’s house in Cafda Village when three people knocked on the door. When we asked who they were, they did not say. They just said they were looking for someone.” January says they “started shooting after we refused to open the door. I was then shot in the head”. Bam also says Lofob will be teaming up with the justice department to

make the law accessible to the blind. “We will be working closely with them so that (knowledge of) every law in this country is available to the blind,” he says. Armed with this new resource, January says he now feels like a “normal person”. “Now that Braille booklets are available and we will get to know our rights blind people can finally be treated as normal people,” he says. The booklets were handed over on Mandela Day and Lofob pre-schoolers were also present at the function. Bam says the event tied in with Mandela Day celebrations. “We had cake and the children from our preschool sang ‘happy birthday’ to the former president,” Bam says.

Zakat, often translated as “the poor rate”, is obligatory as one of the pillars of Islam; a fixed percentage required to be given by those with savings. Sadaqa is voluntary charity in given above and beyond what is required from the obligation of zakat. Muslims believe that all good deeds are more handsomely rewarded in Ramadan than in any other month of the year. Consequently, many will choose this time to give a larger portion, if not all, of the zakat for which they are obligated to give. In addition, many will also use this time to give a larger portion of sadaqa in order to maximise the reward they believe will await them on the Day of Judgment. In many Muslim countries, it is not un-

common to see people giving more food to the poor and the homeless, and even to see large public areas for the poor to come and break their fast. It is said that if a person helps a fasting person to break their fast, then they receive a reward for that fast, without diminishing the reward that the fasting person got for their fast. Even in non-Muslim countries, no matter how small the Muslim population, a consistent increase in charitable donations to both fellow Muslims and nonMuslims occur more so in this month. Tips for fasting

THE fast of Ramadan is rigorous during the best of times. During long and hot summer days, it would still be required for Muslims to observe the fast for as many as 16 or more hours at a time.

To ensure adequate nutrition and continued good health, follow these tips: . Prior to Ramadan, a Muslim should always consult with a doctor about the safety of fasting in individual health circumstances. . Even if you are generally healthy, recognise that Ramadan will take a toll. Plan your schedule and meals ahead of time in order to make sure you get the nutrients, hydration and rest that you need. . Eat breakfast just prior to dawn. Yes, it’s hard to get up at that hour, which is why it has many benefits and rewards. It will help you to wake up for the Fajr prayer. The suhoor meal is Sunnah. And this morning meal is generally recognised as the single most important meal of the day. Do not overeat, though. Focus on taking in foods that are rich in complex carbohy-

drates and protein, fruits or vegetables, and plenty of water. For example: an egg on whole-grain toast, a few crackers with peanut butter, some orange slices and two glasses of water. . During the hottest part of the day, stay in cool areas (indoors or in shade) and limit your physical activity. Rest if possible. . Avoid overindulging when breaking the fast at sunset. Follow the Sunnah: break your fast with dates and either milk, water, or fruit juice. After the maghrib prayer, continue with a light starter such as soup. After a long period of fasting, you need to bring your fluids and blood sugar level up without overdoing it. . During the early evening (after maghrib), have a healthy and balanced dinner. Do not overeat. . During the evening hours, resist the temptation to drink tea, coffee and soda. When visiting friends or family, ask for glasses of water.

. Serve yourself, your family and guests a “dessert” of fresh fruit and nuts. There are lovely choices available in this season, and they are much more healthy than cakes and samoosas. . Sip on water throughout the evening. Aim for eight glasses by bedtime. To help you keep track, fill and refill a water bottle with a measured amount of water and finish it. . Light exercise, such as walking for 1520 minutes, is best done in the evening. . Avoid fried and spicy foods as they may cause heartburn or indigestion. . Speak to your doctor about an appropriate multi-vitamin. . Continue to brush and floss your teeth several times a day. . Wash your hands regularly, and avoid those who cough or sneeze. This is important to prevent the spread of viruses (such as seasonal flu and H1N1) and bacteria which may cause illness. . Quit smoking! . Add sago and stir continuously until the sago is transparent. Stir in rosewater, sugar and almonds. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon and serve.

Safety wrap THE Summer Olympics kick off in London on Friday. One of the major concerns levelled at the SA 2010 World Cup Soccer – crime – is coming back to haunt London. Among the most barbed voices in the world media, the Brits simply could not reign in their negativity around a safe world event in this former colony. History has proven their fears unfounded. Now the same questions are being asked of the London Olympics. How safe will visitors and athletes be? In particular, Israeli athletes who mark the 40th anniversary of the Games in Munich, Germany, when terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches. Chairman of the London 2012 Olympics, Sebastian Coe, has promised a “safe and secure” event. Coe fielded media enquiries after the failure of private security company G4S to provide adequate security staff. This has led to 3 500 more British troops being called in, making it about 17 000 troops on duty to keep Coe true to his word. Safety of another matter has also been an issue. Sex workers in Newham, the east London area which houses the stadium, have been bearing the brunt of a police blitz. The expected influx of two million visitors for the Olympics will, it is reportedly predicted, inject £13bn into the UK economy over the next four years. Perhaps safe sex is the one aspect of personal safety visitors to London may not have to worry about. A crime associated directly with the SA Soccer World Cup – the armed robbery of three foreign reporters covering the Portuguese soccer team at a four-star high-security lodge near Johannesburg – has at the time been solved promptly. Two Zimbabweans and a Nigerian were arrested, charged, tried, convicted and sentenced in one of 54 special courts set up. The world waits to see if the same efficiency can be expected of London.

No response from police ON TUESDAY 10 July at 09:45 we were alerted to the sound of a child screaming outside the parish church of Simon of Cyrene in Acacia Road, Parkwood Estate. On investigation we discovered that a child of about seven years was robbed of her cellphone she was carrying. She was on her way to attend one of our outreach programmes. This child was extremely traumatised by the whole ordeal. We immediately phoned the Grassy Park police, to find the number was not operational. We then called 10111 who said they would pass the information onto the station – and that the police would respond shortly; 45 minutes later a second call was made and

still no response. Fifteen minutes later I personally phoned the station and was told by the duty officer to be patient, the police were en route. At close of day there was no response. This poor traumatised child will live with the memory that her plea for help went unnoticed by those whose job it is to serve and protect us. New Honda CRV headed for SA SINCE its launch in 1995, more than fivemillion Honda CR-V units have been sold globally and the forthcoming generation sports a new design as it hopes to build on its predecessors’ success. South African fans of the Japanese SUV will have to wait until October or November to get behind the wheel. The initial range gives a choice between two-litre and 2.2 diesel engines. Power remains the same for the i-DTEC diesel engine, at 110kW/350Nm though CO2 emissions for the manual version have been reduced from 171g/km to 153g/km. The i-VTEC petrol sees marginal power and torque increases to deliver 115kW and 192Nm, while emissions have fallen from 192g/km to 174g/km. In front-wheel guise, the 2.0 petrol has a CO2 rating of 170g/km. The rest of range sports all-wheel drive with hill assist and descent control. Compared to the previous generation CR-V, the new model takes on a more assertive stance with a bold front design. The bumper is joined by a horizontal grille and deep-set headlights. The model’s signature vertical tail-lights, now with LEDs, remain but feature a three-dimensional style. The headlights feature LED daytime running lights. Exterior designer Manabu Konaka says: “The CR-V has always been a car for every occasion. It can be both casual and formal, but the appearance must always convey solidity and reliability.” The length and height of the SUV has been reduced by 5mm and 30mm respectively compared with the current model, without reducing interior space. With the rear seats folded flat, the boot capacity of the CR-V has grown by 148 litres to 1648 litres and with the seats folded up, boot capacity is rated at 589 litres.

SMART CAR: The fourth generation Honda CRV will arrive in South Africa in the next three to four months.. The load length has been increased by 140mm to 1570mm, while the height of the load lip has been reduced by 25mm making it easier to load heavy or awkward items. Keyless entry and a power tailgate have been added to enhance its practicality. The centre console sports a five-inch display which controls audio, telephone and navigation systems (where fitted). More space has been created between the seats for two cup holders, a storage compart-

ment, armrest and airvents for the rear seats. Honda has added a host of technology as standard for the new CR-V such as its ECON mode and Eco-assist systems. When the ECON button is selected the throttle response and air-conditioning are automatically adjusted to minimise fuel consumption. The Eco-assist system uses the vehicle’s dashboard display to advise drivers on how their driving style is affecting fuel economy,

by changing the colour of the dial edges from white to green when driving more efficiently. The new CR-V is also the latest vehicle to employ the automaker’s Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) ADAS incorporates Honda’s Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), which warns of an impending collision and even applies the brakes to minimise an impact. – Wheels24

The inflatable seatbelt strap, called Beltbag, will be made available in a “luxury-class model”, Mercedes-Benz said in a statement. The strap is designed to reduce the risk of injury to passengers in the rear in a headon collision by reducing the strain placed on

the ribcage. Once the vehicle’s crash sensors detect an impact, the airbag control unit triggers the airbag deployment and the multilayered strap inflates to nearly three times the normal width to better distribute the forces acting on the passenger. It is used in exactly the same way as a conventional seatbelt. It is not planned to introduce the Beltbag for front occupants, as airbags are already included in the front, the automaker added. – Wheels24

Opel appoints new interim chief THE supervisory board of General Motors’ Opel brand has named Thomas Sedran as head of Opel in the latest restructuring move for the company. Sedran’s new title as acting deputy chairman of the Opel management board follows the announcement that GM vice-chairperson Steve Girsky would head the Europe

division on an interim basis, following Karl-Friedrich Stracke stepping down after 16 months on the job. Stracke will, however, still take on special assignments and report to GM chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. GM has lost $14bn (about R114bn) in Europe in the past 12 years. Akerson told shareholders Europe was

the automaker’s biggest challenge. Girsky said they would continue to implement the business plan and work to improve it. “We will further reduce bureaucracy and continue to challenge the corporate culture.” Sedran, a long-time consultant, will continue his management board role in charge of operations, business development and corporate strategies, which he has held

since April. Wolfgang Schafer-Klug, head of the Opel Works Council and deputy Opel supervisory board chairman, said the new team around Girsky stood for change that Opel/Vauxhall urgently needs. “Leaner management structures, transparency, accountability and enforcement capability. They will put Opel back on a growth path.” – Wheels24

THE long-awaited battle between Ajax Cape Town and Manchester United ended in a 1-1 draw at Cape Town Stadium.

The match, which had been eagerly anticipated by both teams fans since its announcement, was played in wet and rainy conditions. This, however, did not stop fans from donning their team’s colours to the match to watch the somewhat disappointing match. Ajax drew first blood when substitute, Alcardo Van Graan, chipped in a cross, catching Manchester United’s solid defence off-guard. The 19 time English league champions waited until the 93rd minute of stoppage time to spoil the Urban Warrior’s party, when another substitute, Bebe, skilfully slotted in the ball into the back of the net from close range. Ajax proved their worth against a Manchester United team missing big names such as Wayne Rooney, Nani and Nemanja Vidic. Khama Billiat was one of the stand out performers for Ajax, giving United’s young left back, Tyler Blackett, a tough day at the office. The Zimbabwean winger, who was named man of the match, had the Cape Town outfit’s first real chance, striking the ball just wide of the right hand post. Minutes later the winger tore United’s midfield, which featured experience campaigners in Micheal Carrick and veteran Paul Scholes, to shreds before losing his footing and the opportunity was lost. Chances were few for United, with Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez getting on the end of few chances missed in front of goal. Winger Antonio

Valencia was left frustrated, as Ajax stubborn defence stood tall. A close range header by the Mexican striker got the crowd to their feet, but an acrobatic save from Dutch keeper Sander Westerveld, denied the games opener. In the second half, United came out firing, but still lacked the killer instinct in front of goal. The closest chance came from the head of new signing, Shinji Kagawa, when a pin point accurate cross from Bebe was headed inches wide from the post. Ajax hitman, Terror Fanteni, stung the hands of United keeper, Ben Amos, when his effort was dug out in the 75th minute. Ajax coach Maarten Stekelenburg was delighted at the performance displayed by the Urban Warriors, saying: “The players were all pumped up for this game and playing in front of a full stadium motivated our players even further.” Defensively, Stekelenburg highlighted the efforts of Nazeer Allie and the towering figure of Matthew Booth, acknowledging that the Cape side had conceded too many goals last season. “It’s still in our pre-season for us that’s why we made a number of substitutions to ensure that we keep our players fresh, but we will continue to work hard on the training field so that at the start of our season, we can continue where we left off,” says the proud Stekelenburg. Manchester United Manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was impressed with Ajax’s performance when he told MUTV: “They caused us a few problems and we decided to make changes and bring on the younger players, but it was a very competitive game.” He was particularly impressed with the performance of his two new signings, Kagawa and Nick Powell.

Karate kid wins gold in US A YOUNG Rondebosch East martial artist has beaten out competitors from 36 other countries to win a major international tournament. Farouk Mayman won the under-13 division at the US Open ISKA World Martial Arts Championships in Orlando, Florida on Saturday 14 July – just five years after taking up the sport. Mayman, who attends Cannon Creek in Pinelands, says he enjoys the sport because it’s as much about resolving differences, as it is about fighting. “It’s not about hurting your opponent, it’s about making peace with your opponent. When you’re done fighting, you don’t go back and say I’m going to hit you,” comments Mayman. “The only way to test yourself is to fight other people.” The 13-year-old adds that the sport offers something offer to those not interested in the full contact or semicontact fighting. “There are different divisions. If you are not good at fighting then you can be good at kata or you can be good at breaking. They also have high

kick, where there is something that’s really high and you have to jump and kick it.” His excitement at having been crowned champion is evident. Mayman first got involved with the sport because his older sister was participating. He trains at his dojo twice a week and twice a week at home, while also take participating in hockey and waterpolo at school. Two years ago Mayman finished third in the US Open and he believes this experience gave him confidence to win this time. “The last time I was so nervous that my legs were shaking. I was confident, because I saw what they did and I knew what they are about,” says Mayman. “I fought people before and I knew their style of fighting. Other people were just staying back, they didn’t want to go in and fight and that’s how points were lost. So each time I made them go back, they lost points. It comes from confidence – if you have confidence you will win.” The martial artist hopes to continue with the sport, and eventually open his own dojo.
