A
MATCH of two halves – this is how one can describe the match between the DHL Stormers and the Blues at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday morning. And with the Blues convincingly taking the first of the two halves, going into half-time with a 19-3 lead, no Stormers fan can be criticised for not believing that their team could come back to win the match. But it was the men from the Cape who came back guns ablaze, winning the most important half and securing their first win on their tour of Australasia. They beat the home side 28-26, with a last-minute try by captain Schalk Burger, and an all-important conversion by stand-in flyhalf, Dewaldt Duvenage. The relatively young side, without many of their experienced stalwarts, stood up to the challenge laid down by the Blues, with the centre pairing of Johann Sadie and Juan de Jongh undoubtedly the stars in the performance. “They were playing against some pretty good opposition, and showed some great touches. I am really pleased with their performance,” coach Allister Coetzee said of the young duo’s performance. “The win is a massive morale booster for this side, and definitely stands us in great stead for the rest of the competition.” The men from the Cape now turn their sights to the capital of Australia, Canberra, where they will face a struggling Brumbies side. And it is also in this match where Coetzee will meet his former coaching team-mate, Jake White, who recently accepted the position of head coach of
the two-time championship side. However, he will only be assuming duty in 2012, but a recent surge in play by the Brumbies – they drew 13-13 to the Western Force in Perth on Saturday – indicates that White may already be assisting the side. With White and Coetzee working closely to secure the 2007 World Cup victory for the Springboks, it will be interesting to see just how much these two breeders remember of the others’ style and coaching techniques. The Brumbies’ preparations have been marred by the fact that star performers such as Matt Giteau, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Mark Chisholm have already signed up with other teams for next season, while injuries to the likes of captain, Rocky Elsom, have forced them to field relatively inexperienced sides week after week. However, one can never write off a side like the Brumbies, who have also been runners-up in the competition on three occasions. And with key players such as Jean de Villiers, Jaque Fourie and Peter Grant returning from injury, team selection will be interesting, after the performance by Sadie and De Jongh last weekend. Many have indicated that Coetzee and backline coach, Robbie Fleck should look to rest the pairing – De Villiers and Fourie – before the last stretch of the competition, while others have said that the two should play with the younger pairing playing on wing. If that should happen, the experience of Bryan Habana (wing) and Conrad Jantjes (fullback) will be lost, with paceman, Gio Aplon moving to fullback. A different approach may not always be necessary, but could prove vital in the remaining weeks of the competition.
