Railroad strike avoided; now in ‘cooling-off period’ until vote

After 20 hours of negotiations, Class I rail roads and three labor unions managed to reach a tentative agreement, thus avoiding a strike. For now.

Many railroad employees were prepared to strike beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, but the temporary deal has managed to keep the trains rolling. What happens now is called a “cooling-off period” that keeps railroad employ ees from striking, which would have brought rail transportation to a screeching halt.

The tentative agreement will be presented to the general chairman first. Then, if approved, it will be sent to the membership for a vote. The entire process will take up to six weeks.

Transportation Division (SMART), has worked on the railroad for 32 years. He is a fifth-genera tion railroad employee. Edwards, a former Peru resident, has been at the bargaining table over and over again, fighting for the those he repre sents. Most would think it is about employees getting more in their paychecks, but what has come to the surface and has remained at the surface is the quality-of-life issues for railroad employees.

“Quality of life issues were the hold up and why things went to the brink. We were asking for unpaid time off and under the preliminary contract that the two sides agreed to this morn ing (Sept 15), after a 20-hour marathon negotia tion, unpaid leave was a part of it,” Edwards explained. He said there will be a certain num ber of days per year available to employees. Whether seniority played into how much unpaid time off employees would receive, was not certain.

If the membership rejects the contract, nego tiations can resume but if a strike does take place, the impact in Indiana will be far and wide.

According to the Association of American Railroads, there are 43 freight railroads in

Indiana. The Canadian National Railway, CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway are the three largest railroads in Indiana. The 2021 Indiana State Rail Plan says those three have main lines that link many manufacturing and consumer regions. SMART Transportation Division as well as the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) represent nearly half the nation’s railroaders. To be more specific, they represent the people who move the trains such as conductors and engineers. If the trains don’t move, the products stay put. With Indiana being heavy in agriculture and manufacturing, a strike could hit the state hard and right about the time harvest season is in full swing.

Edwards, a full-time union officer, who has been representing the membership since 2009, says this process has been all consuming. The

responsibility of “putting our membership in the position to make a good living and have a good quality of life through legislative and safe ty efforts” is his job. Edwards understands these things take time but keeps a positive atti tude about the process.

“We aren’t going to get to where we want to be overnight, but we are going to get there,” he said.

The next six weeks will be crucial for railroad employees, including those in Miami County. If membership votes down the contract, the ripple effect will be felt throughout the county, state, and country.

Edwards added, “We can’t move the mountain all at once. We have to do it one shovel full of dirt at a time. The more shovels, the more of the mountain we move and the faster we move the mountain.”

Sept. 11

An explosives problem was re ported at 205 W Commerce St, Macy. Officers were unable to lo cate anything sus picious.

Officers spoke with a female at 5916 S 250 E, Peru in reference to dis orderly conduct. The female was not disorderly in officers’ presences, and services were offered. The fe male refused every offer. Prior to leav ing, the com plainant said the female was mak ing suicidal com ments. Officers spoke to the female again, and she de nied making any comments related to this topic as well as any claims that stated she was sui cidal.

A female party at E Main St. and N Elm St, Bunker Hill did not wish to pursue charges after domestic dis turbance was re ported. There was no signs of in juries or com plaint of pain. Parties separated for the evening.

A complainant at 275 S Lincoln St, Countryside Mo bile Home Park, Lot 14, Bunker Hill stated that he thought his home was being broken into. Officers were unable to locate any signs of activ ity or suspicious persons.

A welfare check was requested and conducted t 35044 Altus CT, Peru. All checked okay. Ju veniles locked their mother out of the residence as a joke.

Harassment was reported at 2905 Travis St, Peru.

Officers at 41025 Gunter CT, Peru spoke to two par ties in reference to being involved in a neighbor dispute.

A juvenile at 231 W 900 S, Bunker Hill was trans ported to his resi dence to be checked by EMTs in reference to drug use.

Officers spoke to a complainant at 198 E Roosevelt St, Bunker Hill, who wanted a welfare check preformed on his 9-month-old daughter. Daugh ter is with her mother and the complainant has been unable to lo cate them. Mother and complainant are separated and there is no court ordered custody.

Officers obtained a recorded state ment regarding possible intimida tion charges at 2509 Kelly Ave, Peru. No elements of a crime were present.

Theft was re ported at 6869 E

1200 N, Roann.

A traffic stop was conducted at S U.S. 31 and W Hoosier Blvd, Peru. Female was incarcerated for possession of marijuana and op erating while in toxicated.

Sept. 12

Officers assisted Wabash County at E 1300 N & N 700 E, Roann in an at tempt to locate two males who had run from a crashed ve hicle. They were in custody in Wabash County at 8:10 A.M.

Officers spoke with a female at 2024 Shaw Ave, Peru over the

phone who had questions regard ing a neighbor dis pute.

Officers received information at Mississinewa Reservoir, Peru on a possible location of a stolen vehicle. Deputies checked the suspected area, but the vehicle was unable to be lo cated.

A report of cat alytic converter thieves was re ported at 708 N Eel River Cemetery Rd, Rent a Trailer, Peru. Record only at this time.

A female at 1104 W 200 N, Miami County Jail, Peru had questions re garding stored property at a friend’s house.

State Police with a disorderly female.

An abandoned boat and trailer were left on the roadway at E 300 N & N 700 E, Wabash. The vehicles were towed.

A female at 5916 S 250 E, Peru was making threats of suicide in text messages with her parents. The text conversations were recorded and forwarded to Indi ana State Police, who transported Richards to M3 for evaluation.

Officers re sponded to the area of 1488 E 500 N, Peru in re sponse to a welfare check request on a missing juvenile.

Nancey Faye Scott, 71, of Peru, passed away at Eastwood Place Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022.

She was born in Ten nessee to the late Robert Leo and Blanche (Simms) Scott Sept. 15, 1950.

Nancey was a very caring person who en joyed playing bingo.

Bob was born in Otisco, Indiana, June 15, 1931, the son of Paul and Minnie Montgomery Smith. He married Arlene Fenstermaker Sept. 19, 1954, and she survives.

Bob was an U. S. Army Veteran and worked Line Mainte nance for RCA in Mar ion. Bob was a member of the Church of Hope. An outdoor enthusiast, Bob en joyed gardening and bird watching. Mary was employed as a factory worker at Controls. She enjoyed playing cards and doing sudoku puzzles. She was a member of the Delta Theta Tau Sorority.

It is with great sad ness, yet fond memory, that the family of Dorothy Pearl (Owens) Myers announces her passing on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, after 87 years of life.

Dorothy is proceeded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Elvin Myers.

She leaves behind one daughter, Bobbi (Dave) Charters, three sons; Danny (Beth) Myers, Phil (Allyson) Myers, and Alan (Debbie) Myers.

Dorothy was blessed in childhood with 11 brothers and sisters, Don, Dale, Deloris, Annabelle, Buster, Ellen, Doris, Joyce,

She will be greatly missed.

Alice Faye (Haley) Pennington, 85

Alice Faye (Haley) Pennington, 85, of Peru passed away at Dukes Memorial Hospital Wednes day, Sept. 14, 2022.

She was born in Hazard, Kentucky Aug. 13, 1937, to the late Charlie and Bessie (Chadwell) Haley. Alice married John Pennington in July of 1968 and he survives.

Alice was a self-employed beautician and owner of Alice’s Hair Care. She en joyed “deer hunting” or by Alice’s definition, driving around with her husband to look for deer. She also enjoyed watching game shows with her sister prior to her passing. She was lov ingly referred to as “Nana” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is sur vived by her husband, son, John (Tina) Pennington of Fort Wayne, In diana, daugh ter-in-law, Tracey Williams, ten grandchildren, and 11 great grandchil dren.

Alice is proceeded in death by her parents, sons, Barry Williams and Hubert Lee Williams, brother, Bill Haley and sister, Wilma Brewer.

Barbara J. Con ner, 82, of Peru, passed away at 12:20 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, at Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru. She was born in Angola, IN, the daughter of David and Edna Wilcox Ferris.

Barb married Daniel O. Conner in Denver, Indiana, Feb. 18, 1961, and he preceded her in death Jan. 20, 2021.

A 1958 graduate of Peru High School, Barb was a member of the Psi Iota Psi Sorority and the Ladies of the Moose.

An active member of the Main Street United Methodist

Church, Barb could be found helping in many areas of the church. Barb and Dan owned and oper ated the East End Double Dip since 1973. However, her favorite role was that of wife, mother, and grandmother. Surviving are sons Robbie Conner and his wife Kathy of Peru and Bradley Conner and his wife Christy of South

Bend; grandchildren Adam Brower and his wife Julie and Riley Conner and his wife Lindsay and great-grandchildren Bryce Brower, Cameron Brower, Lynlee Brower, Ada lynn Conner and Ry land Conner; a brother Steven Fer ris and his wife Shirley of Xenia, Ohio, and sisters Sonja Myers and her husband Ken of Ocala, Florida, and Susan Anderson of Peru.

She was preceded in death by her par ents, her husband, Dan, and a brother Herschel Schworm.

Carolyn S. Stan ton, 86, of Peru, passed away peace fully at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, at Blair Ridge Healthcare Center in Peru.

Born May 11, 1936, in Logans port, she was the daughter of the late Ralph E. and Mabel (Ping) Hall, who were both school teachers. She graduated from Logansport High School in 1954 and earned her bachelor’s degree in education in 1958 from Indiana State Teachers Col lege. She subse

quently received a master’s degree from Indiana Uni versity and taught elementary school, mostly kinder garten, at Peru Community Schools for nearly 30 years.

In April of 1957, Carolyn married Paul F. Stanton, who survives. She was a member of

First Christian Church in Peru where she was the organist for over 20 years. While still in high school, she was church organ ist and played piano in a dance band in Logans port. Over the years she provided piano music and accompaniment at Peru High School, Ole Olsen Memo rial Theatre, and many other com munity and private functions.

After her retire ment from teach ing, Carolyn served on the Civic Center board, Peru Public

Library board, Red Cross board, and she was a volunteer and officeholder with Dukes Auxil iary for over 20 years. She belonged to Psi Iota Xi soror ity and the Peru Art Club. She en joyed reading, quilting, and music. In recent years her primary focus was caring for her husband and making fre quent trips to the library.

Survivors include her husband, Paul F. Stanton; daugh ters Lynn Bock over, Peru; and Susan Arthur,

Greenwood; son David (Amy) Stan ton, Columbus; grandchildren Jacob (Bridgette) Bockover, Ply mouth; Joseph Bockover, Peru; Samuel Arthur, Greenwood; Kath lyn Arthur, Indi anapolis; Logan (Devon) Edmonson, North Vernon; Jesse Stanton, North Vernon; Jonathon (Hope) Deater, Edinburgh; Mason Day, Colum bus. Great grand children are Gabriel, Owen, and Reed Bockover; MaKenna and Mariah Edmonson;

Lucy and Lainey Deater.

Carolyn is also sur vived by her brother, Kent Hall, Logansport; sisterin-law, Sally Hall, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.

Clarence Eugene Worley, known to many as “Butch” or “Chubby,” 76, Peru, passed away at 4:45 a.m. Mon day, Sept. 12, 2022, at Dukes Memo rial Hospital, Peru.

Born April 9, 1946, in Litchfield, Illinois, he was the son of Roy and Roma L. (Swires) Straub. On March 28, 1969, at the First Church of Christ in Peru, In diana, he was mar ried to Carla Louise McKinney, who survives.

He graduated from Maconaquah High School in 1965 and worked as a meat cutter for Marburger Foods before starting his long career as a

mechanic at Pate/Paul Richards Chevro let, where he worked since 1968. He retired in 2000 and then went to work at Caring Hands Nursing Home, where he worked in mainte nance for thirteen years before retir ing from work and heading to his garage where he spent many hours working on proj ects in his favorite place at home.

Survivors in

clude his wife, Carla L. Worley, Peru; four sons, Clarence Eugene Worley, Jr., Peru; David Alan (Lori a.k.a. “Rosie”) Worley, Peru; Jason Matthew (Jennifer) Worley, Peru; Gary Lee Worley, Peru; twelve grandchil dren; and nine great-grandsons; two brothers, Ken neth (Bunny) Wor ley, Indianapolis.; Edward (Carol) Straub, Alaska; and sister, Kathy (Charlie) Brehmer, Peru; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one granddaughter Brandy Kay Wor ley.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2022, at the Gris som Church of Christ with Evan gelist Shane Capps officiating. Private burial was in En terprise Cemetery, northern Miami County.

Visitation was from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church.

Officers responded to the area of N 400 W & W 200 N, Peru in response to a po lice department crash. A crash re port was submitted.

Domestic distur bance was reported at 7831 S St. Rd. 19, Peru. Indiana State Police advised offi cers to disregard the case prior to their arrival.

A traffic accident with injuries was reported at S U.S. 31 and W St. Rd. 18, Kokomo. Indiana State Police han dled the call.

Peru Police De partment was as sisted at 387 Boulevard, Peru with a domestic issue.

Suspicious indi viduals were re ported at 350 N 150 W, Rock Hollow, Peru. Trespass

warnings were is sued to three indi viduals.

A traffic violation was given at N U.S. 31 and W 600 N, Peru for 130 in a 60 MPH zone.

A single vehicle crash with injuries was reported at W 600 N and N Eel River Rd, Peru. Driver was trans ported to Dukes Hospital for further medical evaluation.

A complainant at 2020 E Lou Ln, Peru had questions re garding eviction and protective or ders.

A male at 734 E 300 N, Peru stated he wanted to kill himself. The male was transported to Duke’s Hospital for evaluation.

A report was taken at 6721 S 250 E, Peru for possible theft of firearms.

A sex offense was reported at 1104 W 200 N, Miami

County Jail, Peru.

A caller at 41052 Gunter CT, Peru had questions about possible child abuse. A Child Pro tective Services re port was made.

A mental case was reported at 44044 Macdill CT, Peru.

A third-party call of a female yelling for help in an apart ment was taken at 314 E Washington Ave, Prescott Greene, Apt. 24, Bunker Hill. Spoke to the lone occu pant of the apart ment in question and she denied the allegations. No fur ther action was taken.

A report was taken at 431 E 500 N, Peru for theft of a license plate.

A single vehicle accident vs. a pole barn was reported at 3977 S 550 E, Peru. No injuries were reported.
