Publisher’s Note

In recent years I have noticed deepening divides in the LGBT community, between generations, theologies, ideals, and between the letters in the acronym. There has been tension between people who wish to celebrate how far we’ve come and people who are focused on how far we have to go. There has been talk (more like screams) about people in our community being insensitive and on the other hand overly policing language. I have one wish for this holiday season, I wish for people to reflect on what it means to be a community, not only a demographic community but a community within the larger community that is general society. I want us to put aside the differences and celebrate what a rich and diverse place we live in. It’s time to set aside anger and to come together with the enitre LGBT community and the greater Newfoundland and Labrador community to realize that we are not in this alone and it takes people from all walks of life to truely acheive equality. I wish you all a very happy and safe holidays and please remember to share love, not hate.

RAINBOWS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Written by Taylor Stocks

Happy holidays everyone! In keeping with my own December ‘Out’port tradition from last year, here is a poem for thought over more restful times: There are rainbows in my chest swirling, in the cavern of my rib cage Bright colours, though dark ones too Ever changing, constant movement within a static frame. And who doesn’t want a heart full of rainbows? The delightfulness of such simple coloured pleasure as an added topping upon daily drudgeryit seems a gift to have such a spectacle so close to my lungs

For each one of my breaths is filled with rich hues vibrantly mixed with the next and next until my throat is charged with multicoloured text Words filled with wisdom of what it is to move with a force of nature. But, Sometimes they make me sick An oily gasoline sheen sticking between my ribs Yet too slippery to grip It makes me queasy

The shifting and lilting my stomach can’t keep up with the ragged rhythms tossed about in a storm that can’t decide if it is fundamentally more aligned with the inherent internal properties of red or blue Philosophy is no life boat. There are no answers, few words that allow communication across the tempest And sometimes it takes too much To figure out what it takes to be seen when alignment is a laughable construction. There isn’t, then, Much else to be done Except to move too And enjoy the pretty colours as they come.

Port de grave Boat Lighting Every year since 1999, The harbour in Port de Grave illuminates for the holidays. The tradition started when the provincial government offered a grant to towns that would “light up their community”, so the community formed a committee and got creative. They looked to a fisherman, Eric Lear, who had always decorated his boat in Christmas lights during the holidays. They took the idea and ran with it! The first boat lighting saw 36 boats participate. Now a days, 50 to 60 boats light up for this beautiful display and thousands of people visit Port de Grave to view the lights. The harbour of Port de Grave will be lit up from December 12th to January 2nd.

Marvellous Monro “I don’t really believe in big breaks. I believe in waking up every morning, having a clear goal in mind, working toward it, and enjoying the experience... ”

Jonathan Monro may as well be royalty as far as St. John’s thriving arts scene is concerned. The international theatre superstar is an actor, writer, composer, pianist, singer, musical director, and more - and his family was responsible for giving many Newfoundland stars their start - from Mary Walsh and Andy Jones to Greg Malone and Tommy Sexton. Monro - a member of the LGBT community - sat down with The Outport while visiting family and friends back in St. John’s on his way home to New York City from a European tour. We wanted to know what it takes for a shy, talented man from St. John’s to chase the world’s biggest spotlights. “Growing up, I was a classical pianist and was also involved in swimming as well,” Monro says. “I was shy, so everything I was involved in was more individual, as opposed to facing the world. I loved the challenge of it.” Fortunately for us, Monro couldn’t escape the stage. His father, David Weiser, cofounded the Newfoundland Travelling Theatre Company and his mother, Susan, was also involved in the performing arts. Although it took him a while to test his acting chops, once he did, Monro was hooked. “I quit piano, I thought - I’m done with it, I want to try something else,” he said. “I

10

had tried a little threatre with my parents, and when I was 19 I jumped into it - all of the dancing, and singing, and performing. I loved it.” Monro’s parents supported his newfound passion for threatre, always telling him he can achieve anything he wants and works toward. He added he received equally passionate support from his teachers and all of those with whom he worked in the St. John’s arts community. That support paid off big. Monro has performed at the prestigious Stratford Theatre Festival and took home the Tyrone Guthrie Award for his musical contributions. He’s performed in The Miser and Much Ado About Nothing on Broadway and toured the U.S. in 2 Pianos, 4 Hands. Recently, Monro wrote a musical for our own Lady Cove Choir. As far as anyone involved can tell, it’s the first-ever musical written specifically for such a choir. “That’ll be here in St. John’s next April,” he said. “It’s the first time a choral musical will be performed that we’ve been able to find, anywhere.” In fact, Monro graced the stage at just about every regional theatre in Canada and the U.S. - and taken home more than enough awards to fill his shelves. “I’ve had so many amazing experiences, and they’ve opened up so many doors for

me,” he said. “I don’t really believe in big breaks. I believe in waking up every morning, having a clear goal in mind, working toward it, and enjoying the experience. Theatre has allowed me to open up, to be creative, and meet people just like me. It’s made me feel I can be who I am.” Interestingly, Monro said St. John’s and his new home of New York City share more than a few things in common - something that has made his hard-won fame that much more enjoyable. “It’s a port city, the people are friendly and interesting, there’s salt in the air, they share that Atlantic attitude,” Monro said, noting he feels more at home there than in other cities on the Canadian mainland. Exploring the world has given Monro a deeper appreciation for his home, something that comes to mind especially strongly during the holidays. He’s missed a few Christmases on the road performing, and has vowed never to be away from his family, friends, and home for the holidays again. “Family first, friends first, and everything else after that,” Monro said.

Christmas brings back so many fond memories of my childhood, of family, friends and food. Many of those special moments were made over some of the recipes that I’m sharing in this month’s article, and were even passed down as some of my favorite family recipes. I hope that you take the time to make, share and enjoy and make your own holiday memories.
