Temerity, the first word By Chad T. Everson, Owner and Editor of Temerity Magazine Ever feel like you don’t know whether you are coming or going? Well, welcome to my world, but this year and leading up to this great issue of Temerity Magazine, it has been downright nuts. Opportunities seem to abound and we have taken on some really exciting projects. We are publishing our first book, it is actually the relic and treasure book that I was looking for in the marketplace but could not find it. When Cowboy Bart Jeppesen shared with me his field journal that he takes out into the field I was blown away. It took me a while to figure out how to best bring it to our fellow relic and treasure hunters. Now that we settled on a series of books that builds on each other and progresses as you wrap your head around this very specialized relic and treasure hunting that is literally all around us, even in my very own backyard! Bart did a great job making this quest attainable for the relic and treasure hunter. I am honored to have been entrusted with getting this out there. I honestly think Bart has just created the modern relic and treasure codex for our generation. I am sure it will serve many, many generations to come. If that was not enough, Rick Osmon contacted me and shared with me his exciting project. Rick has a cable TV show, the Oopa Loopa Café that debut’s Dec. 3rd in a marketplace that has 62,000 subscribers. Ricks show will run for 2 hours during lunch hour 5 days a week. Rich asked me to produce a 5 min. segment that would air daily. Faced with the great opportunity, I was a bit overwhelmed thinking about filling all that time even though I have over 900 videos now uploaded to YouTube. It occurred to me as I mulled over the concept and opportunity that the strategy I have been most successful with is the one that has made Temerity Magazine so successful. If you understand that old wisdom of lifting up thy neighbor, you understand the strategy behind Temerity Magazine. The higher I can lift up my fellow relic and treasure hunters, the further they in turn lift me up there with them and this is how these great opportunities come along. Today I have a dream team of relic and treasure hunters joining me on this project. 13 currently from all over the USA, England, Scotland, South Africa, and Australia who are metal detectorists, resellers, pickers, bottle diggers, Ancient Treasure and gem and precious metal prospectors. Confident with all the great talent that joined me on this project, I even took on another 5 minute segment commitment so that all these great relic and treasure hunters will have more opportunities to become the best ambassadors for this hobby, industry and addiction we all share. So now will be producing 10 minutes of programming per day to air on Rick Osmon’s Oopa Loopa Café. Nothing in this life is a sure thing. It is always more work and a gambling tight rope walk between success and humiliation. Yet if the opportunity is never embraced and that fist step into the unknown is never taken, are you living or just dying never realizing your God given potential. Minnesota Red River Ox Cart Trail Trading Post

European's that had married native wives. A group of these hunters were in Pigs Eye in the fall and wanted to return to Pembina so they decided to take a new route home. This route through Frazee was established in 1844 when the Dakota Indians revolted. The Ojibwe were friendlier, so the new route was from St Paul to Crow Wing, then Detroit Lakes that was called Lake 44 and on to Fargo and then Fort Pembina. The farmer that owned the land where the trading post is located inviting me out to detect his land. He told me that his grandparents moved onto the farm in 1890 and the trading post had burned down prior to them moving there. The natives were friendly at that time and his grandmother would often bake a pie or a cake and leave it on the porch at night. The next morning the cake or pie would be gone and a bunch of fish or other small game would be left as a trade. The trading post was located in a field between two small lakes and when I was there it was being used as a cow pasture. This was great because the grass was very short so I was able to swing the detector coil low to the ground lifting
it only to clear those piles of grass that had traveled through the cow. That first year was so exciting. I was able to determine that there was two building and we believe one was probably used for the livestock. There was an unbelievable number of spent shot shells and fired rifle shells of all calibers, old Henry casings, Sharp shells ( a well known buffalo gun) and lots of odd casings. I even found one pin fire casing. I also found some very ornate buttons, porcelain doll pieces and part of a child's play plate. A lot of pottery shards and the old clay pipe stems could be seen laying on top of the ground. When I began detecting my interest was finding coins and I found quite a few out there. The newest coin was dated 1890 and that had to have been lost after the trading post was gone. I believe the oldest coin was a 1864 2 cent piece. I soon became just enamored with the history of this place. Every piece that I uncovered was a piece of history and told a story. This land had been plowed many times over the years so many item have been moved and I believe that when and if it is plowed again it will yield so much more and I will be there. One day I was detecting in an area that the rains and snow had
caused a ditch or low area to form. My detector sounded off on what turned out to be the metal band of a small wooden barrel. I got all excited because they didn't use banks back in those days and when they stopped for the night they would often bury their cash and valuables. Off to see the farmer I go for a shovel and back to uncover the treasure. I found the second metal band, the wood had long ago rotted away, then as I dug deeper I uncovered a third metal barrel band. Below that there was two rubber soles to a pair of boots or shoes and then I realized that there were also leg bones for these boots. I had uncovered a grave. I felt bad about this and covered it up right away but I wonder to this day why they would bury someone with a small wooden barrel resting on his legs. When we look at a piece of ground we see it as it is. One hundred or two hundred years ago things were so very different. We can learn so much from history and its all around us. Talk to the old timers, imagine what was and you also will find that you will want to know more and more. Digging in the dirt can be a lot of fun.

The Adventures of “Fearless” Frank and “Bobby”
Episode Four “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” By Fred C. Dobbs Frank pulled up in front of Bobby’s dark house. Bobby wasn’t ready as usual but this time Frank didn’t care. He sat back enjoying the noises of the early morning. He had left a house that was way too quiet. It was a stony silence. His wife had caught him running his metal detector over his Christmas presents last night. To say that she was less than happy was a gross understatement. She had not spoken to him except to say
“from now until Eternity all of your presents will be wrapped in foil paper”. In his mind the only thing that he had done wrong was to let her see him. He thought that she would be at her mother’s house longer. Those two had always gabbed for hours until last night. He and Bobby were going to one of her old family friends to help them out. Maybe this would get him back in her good graces with her.

Only this bucket was different. It had a one inch hole cut into the bottom and the remains of a paper towel inside. They picked up the bucket and the load of Wheat pennies and made their way the three quarters of a mile back to the store retracing their steps across the stream, over fences, through gates, and along fence lines, finally arriving back at the store. Every pocket that they had on their jackets and jeans were stuffed with Wheat pennies. Their detecting pouches bulged with pennies. Even walking with such a load was an effort.

Originally I had written only one book on symbols and signs. It was more of my journal and notes collected. I personally believe everyone should have a copy of this book. But as I began to put it altogether for publishing it occurred to me just how much information and thousands of photographs were involved, along with the massive amount of work it would consist of. Treasure Signs, Symbols, Shadow and Sun Signs By Charles A. Kenworthy This was the first book I purchased in this genre after being ignited by Bob Brewer’s Rebel Gold book. It was a great place to start, but the large format is a bit difficult to bring out in the field. Still this is a great series of books to get you started in this great addiction.
Spanish Monuments and Trailmarkers to Treasure in the United States By Charles A. Kenworthy This is another good book in this series that Charles has put together for the relic and treasure hunter. I really enjoy Charles format and it is packed with great info. Again my only complaint is the large format that is not easy to take out in the field with you, but it is easy on the old eyes.

Ok, this is my favorite book of this genre. Margaret was so very close and was probably right there. I would have loved to talk and argue with Margaret but I was saddened when I learned I just missed her as she departed not that long ago. This is the book that every American with Norwegian decent should hold dear, and every relic and treasure hunter should study as it holds many keys to this cache system. Out in the field I wore the cover off my first copy so I had to pick up another replacement copy when I visited the Museum. Some lovely finds I was thrilled to pick up!
Sixpence of George III provided my first ‘Bullhead’ Silver coin. Worn almost smooth, there is enough to I.D this coin which was only made over those 4 mentioned years. A find which I was delighted to add to my collection. Hopefully the year can bring one in better condition!
Georgian and Victorian era Silver coinage has been excitingly well received. I feel lucky to be able to hunt such a place in truly magnificent surroundings. An 1816-1820 (.925 Silver) Victorian silver has not been absent
with a tremendous duo over two days. A 1894 (.925) Shilling and 1895 (.925) Sixpence providing my first ‘Widow Head’ silver coinage finds. Minted one year apart, found one day apart. era of WWI with a Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers cap badge with slider. Unexpectedly, a Sterling Silver Kilt pin showed a nice 40 signal on the XTerra 705 only last month! Hallmarked in Birmingham, England 1920. Adorned with native Citrine stone, this would have had two different colored stones below the orange Citrine, giving it a traditional Scottish agate design. A Victorian Half Penny 1881 Ring provided an interesting relic find. As a side note to my hunts, at another site in the Old Kilpatrick hills I made a discovery that is a link to the past in Glasgow. Now out of business this fantastic ‘Robert Gray & Son’ ‘MJ’ inscribed Gold men’s wedding ring came up from around 7-8 inches. Shocked was not the word and with help from the Incorporation of Goldsmiths, Edinburgh website, I was able to trace the hallmark

The father worked the rich soil with the help of his two sons and the mother tended to the garden and the household chores.
According to Mr. Foster this lady was steeped in the traditions of her people and spent much of her time outdoors. She would not live in the house, instead she preferred her “hut,” a dome shaped structure made from bent poles and covered in canvas. In the center was a fire pit for warmth and to one side of the entrance sat a wind-up Victrola record player. She helped tend the garden a bit, but mostly she sewed and listened to records all day, every day. She only went to town four times a year, to get her head right royalty payments. These were paid to her in silver dollars as was the custom of the time. Upon returning home they would bring the money into the kitchen and count out a portion for supplies, necessities, and a few minor luxuries. This amount was always meager as the farming operation was quite prosperous. The rest of the money the lady took out of the house through the back door and into her hut. Those coins were never seen again. The dad, mom, and the two boys would go back to town the next day and do the shopping. The lady had every record ever sold in Pawhuska up to that point in time. Mr. Foster went on to tell me that early one morning his mother was taking breakfast out to the lady and found her dead in her hut. The family stayed on the property and continued farming until the boys were grown, and never wanted for anything as the crops were fairly successful
even during the dustbowl. The young men were successful in their business ventures and led full and happy lives. He added that he had never before told this story to anyone and that as far as he knew no one had ever searched the property for the several thousand silver dollars. He reflected on how the lady’s love of the outdoor life had influenced his family to the extent that his father had built a large picnic table and meals were usually taken outdoors unless the weather was bad. In my further investigation the late Waltena Redcorn told me she remembered the house and saw some of the traditional Osage ribbon work made by the lady. Waltena said it was the most beautiful and most perfect ribbon work she had ever seen.

Big hello to all readers of Temerity Magazine from the united kingdom. My name is Andrew fudge and I run a metal detecting group on Facebook called metal detecting with the help of my brother Paul fudge, Jimmy young and Stephen llewellyn. Recently we reached the 1000 member milestone, the popularity of the group as astounded me as I never envisaged this happening as there are large Internet based sites already established for the hobby. Why did I set up this group on Facebook ? Well 2 years ago after being a member of these Internet based sites and also Facebook too, I thought everyone uses Facebook , I could set up a group and everyone could access it as they would already be logged in with their account. This would make it a whole lot easier and far more practical. Every day people login to the site and post their finds from all over the world. There is over 3000 photos on the site and this serves as an identification database.
We also have some very knowledgeable members in our ranks who identify finds as they are posted and its very much a team effort. The best thing for me that as came about from this group is the amount of friendships that as been formed and people are actively meeting on each others sites. This hobby is a great pastime and the anticipation of what your next signal is going to be is an adrenalin rush. Metal detecting isnt about money and the value of each find, its about history , enjoyment and friendships.
