RESHAPE YOUR BODY IN 20 MINUTES!

Mary Ann Kniest found herself approaching her 60th birthday with 30 extra pounds to lose. She’d had two knee surgeries within the last two years, sat around more, and gained weight. “Plus, when you age your body is going to change,” says Mary Ann. She wanted to lose the weight, but wasn't sure how to go about doing it, and she didn't like the idea of spending an hour at the gym.

Fortunately, as a gift, her husband enrolled her with a personal trainer at The Perfect Workout, a local company with 7 private fitness studios in Southern California specializing in “slowmotion” strength training. Slow-motion strength training is a revolutionary new exercise method promising a firmer, stronger, more shapely body from just two 20-minute training sessions per week. Mary Ann was a little hesitant at first, but decided to give it a try. After just one month, she started to see results. She was stronger, more toned, had more energy, and her clothes were fitting looser. Her husband was noticing her toned legs. After 4 months of combining effective nu-

trition with two 20-minute training sessions each week, she’d lost 25 pounds and dropped from a size 10 to a size 6. Other people notice her results, too. “I'm constantly getting complimented on how good I look!” says Mary Ann.

The Perfect Workout’s trainers encourage clients to build lean muscle tissue which increases the body’s metabolism, burning extra calories even while you’re sleeping. Not only does the extra muscle help burn fat and calories, muscle takes up 20% less space than fat. So a fit 140-pound person can wear clothes several sizes smaller than an out of shape 140-pound person. Slow-motion strength training involves brief and demanding workouts to get great results. You lift relatively heavy weights excruciatingly slowly (10 seconds to lift, another 10 seconds to lower) for as many repetitions as you can until you’re unable to move the weights anymore. And when you learn to challenge your muscles as deeply as a skilled trainer can teach, it’s impossible to workout longer than 20 minutes, which makes each training ses-

sion quite time efficient.

The Perfect Workout has seven private studios in Southern California, including two brand new locations in Orange County: Laguna Niguel (949-495-1900) and Mission Viejo (949-830-3100). www.ThePerfectWorkout.com

Dr. Howard Dittrich lost 32 pounds and lowered his body fat from 23% to 13% with a reduced calorie nutrition plan and two 20-minute training sessions a week.

In addition to the five pillar programs, Beckstrand also reaches out by way of their auxiliary programs, which allow community youth to get involved in service roles, raising awareness and funds for children and teens with cancer.

“They’re sort of like clubs, but volunteer-based,” Ray informs us. “Over 200 volunteers do hospital visits, awareness events, food drives, toy drives, and they do a wonderful job. They’re not only raising awareness, they’re also fundraising. They really ‘get it.’ We’re really lucky.”

BECKSTRAND OFFERS HELP & HOPE By Joshua Waldrop ancer is the second leading cause of death in this country. When it strikes, treatment is intense, and also very expensive. Imagine shouldering such a heavy emotional, physical, and mental strain, made exponentially worse by the enormous financial burden that accompanies such treatment. The Beckstrand Cancer Foundation was founded in 1974 by Long Beach oncologist Dr. Grant Beckstrand, and provides financial relief for those undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment. His vision: to provide a safety net allowing a cancer patient to receive their treatment with the security of knowing their mortgage will be paid; their families provided for.

“I think what sets us apart from other cancer organizations,” says Kaerie Ray, Beckstrand’s Director of Development and Communications, “[is that] we’re doing something that we think is equally important [as] with

research. We’re helping with the day-to-day needs that patients have; things like rent, food, utilities, even gas to get to medical appointments, so they can continue to receive their treatment without any interruption.” The foundation is comprised of five programs, all of which drive toward the common goal of improving a cancer patient’s quality of life:

• The Individual Assistance Program provides direct financial assistance to the patient, spanning a range of needs from rent, food, and insurance payments. Beckstrand has partnered with such prominent OC medical organizations as Hoag Cancer Center, CHOC, UCI Medical Center, and St. Jude Children research hospital, among others. • The Pediatric Program focuses on children with cancer. Aside from financial assistance, this program provides such unique resources as school integration and counseling. • The Art Therapy Program uses art and psychoanalysis to teach teens with cancer how to better cope with their diagnosis and prognosis, and to aid in their recovery. • The Andi Collins Memorial Scholarship provides tuition awards to college bound students who are either in the midst of their cancer treatment or are survivors. • The BELIEVE Holiday Program was designed to prevent cancer from robbing a family of its holiday spirit. BELIEVE reaches out locally to provide the holiday spirit by delivering gifts to families touched by the disease who would otherwise be denied such celebration.

Q: How did you become involved with Beckstrand? A: My dear friend, fashion designer Oday Shakur, told me about Beckstrand. He is a big supporter and at the time, I was looking for the right charity to get involved with. I have worked with a number of other wonderful cancer charities in the past and after meeting Lil Spitzer (Beckstrand Executive Director) and learning all about the organization, I knew it was the home for me. Q: You’re very much personally

involved with the foundation. Why has this been important to you? A: A couple of years ago I lost a friend to breast cancer. She was a school teacher who was married to a school teacher and though they had ample medical insurance, his income alone was not enough to pay for all the bills and take care of their three daughters. This was the first time that I really realized how financially devastating cancer can be for a family. Beckstrand really does what they say they are going to do with minimal red tape. They

Having relocated from Long Beach to Newport Beach just over a decade ago, the organization realizes certain benefits from being headquartered in the affluent Orange County beach town. “Being located where we are, we have the benefit of sort of being in the center of it all,” Ray explains. “In OC, we have a population that really cares, and they’re good people. They’re generous, and also savvy when it comes to giving. They take the time to get to know the organization—they want to know, how much of this is really going to the patient? They’ll look at our financials and when they see the relevance in what we’re doing, they make a decision to really back it, and that’s wonderful.” The organization hosts several outstanding fundraising events throughout the year, including their signature event, the Diamond and Pearl Ball, a black tie gala held every October at the Balboa Bay Club, an event that boasts such notable community partners as Neiman-Marcus and the O’Connell Family Foundation. In addition, the foundation hosts an annual Hope and Harmony 5K Run/Walk every February, and the recent Delta Queen Talent Pageant on March 17th put on by the Delta Delta Fraternity/Sorority at Chapman University. With all that Beckstrand is doing, Ms. Ray assures that the most important form of action is simply to inform others of the services that are available to them.

“If you know someone who has any type of cancer, any age, living in the Orange County area, Long Beach area, even parts of L.A., if their monthly expenses exceed their income, tell them to call us. We make it easy. We have so many resources to offer them. We want to give them hope that there are people that care about them and want to help them in their situation so that they aren’t left wondering: do I have to stop treatment so the kids can eat next month? We don’t want anyone to be in that situation.”

are so efficient with their financial assistance and transparent in their accounting. As a public person, I only lend my name to those organizations with honesty and integrity. Q: What is the most important thing you would like people to know or learn about what the Beckstrand Foundation does? A: People need to know that although Beckstrand is growing in leaps and bounds, they still maintain their oneon-one service, their compassion, and their integrity. When people are

in the fight of their life, the last thing they need is a bureaucratic agency full of paper pushing and red tape. With Beckstrand, it is simple and straight-forward. From the girls in the office to the many volunteers and donors, everyone is involved for the right reasons. Everyone I have met with Beckstrand has a genuine and sincere interest in helping people in need. It is a beautiful thing and I am so blessed to be a part of it and proud to lend my name to this beautiful organization.
