Thoughts become things

Heal your mind and heal your life!

My favourite – fabulous – fantastic and fun stuff What is an affirmation? And how can it change your life? Affirmations, really, are simple. They are you being in conscious control of your thoughts. They are short, powerful statements. When you say them or think them or even hear them, they become the thoughts that create your reality. Affirmations, then, are your conscious thoughts. Just think about that a moment; it is such a fabulous and fantastic idea, in essence then, “It is your mind that creates your world”. To affirm means to say something positively. It means to declare firmly and assert something to be true. Affirmations are statements where you assert that what you want to be true is true. Here are some very good examples of some great affirmations you could use in your life:

I am a success in all that I do. I feel happy, I feel healthy, and I feel terrific. I am a money magnet and will never have to worry about money ever again. My mind is clear, focused and energized. My life is full of abundance, love, happiness and health. Today, I am brimming with energy and overflowing with joy. My body is healthy, my mind is brilliant and my soul is tranquil. I have endless talents, which I begin to utilize today. I possess the qualities needed to be extremely successful. My business is growing, expanding and thriving. Creative energy surges through me and leads me to new and brilliant ideas.

Live with grace and gratitude

Believe you already have it all.

I am courageous and I stand up for myself. My thoughts are filled with positivity and my life is plentiful with prosperity. Today, I abandon my old habits and take up new, more positive ones. I am blessed with an incredible family and wonderful friends. Everything that is happening now is for my ultimate good. I am a powerhouse. I am indestructible. I radiate beauty, charm and grace. I wake up today with strength in my heart and clarity in my mind. I am at peace with all that has happened, is happening, and will happen. Make reminder cards or sticky notes to write your affirmations, and then leave them where you will see them: put one on the mirror in your bathroom, where you sit at the kitchen table, tape one to your car's steering wheel, or stick one to your computer monitor. Each time you see the card, read it and think about what it means to you. Repetition is the key to making affirmations effective. Make a point of writing your affirmations in a journal or diary each morning when you wake up and each night before you go to sleep. Repeat the affirmations to yourself during the day if you think about it. No matter what aspect of life you're dealing with or who you are, affirmations will make you feel better about yourself and your life. If used correctly, they can manifest real change in your life; changing the way you think, reprogramming your mind and removing the old negative beliefs that have been sabotaging you again and again throughout your life. Hey, what do you have to lose? Achieve the life you've always wanted for yourself! Have some fun with this – life is too darn short not to have a little fun, love and happiness! Kathryn Hartwell

SPINNING THE YARN Stories, musings, a little adventure and humour with Suzanne Shaver. Suzanne is a native Calgarian that lived in Langdon for 15 years before transplanting to Chestermere in 2013. By day she is an accountant with a frustrated creative side that occasionally escapes in form of written musings, which is far more interesting than adding stuff up for people.

Mosquito Infested Glory April showers may bring May flowers, but June showers just bring July mosquitos. I know this because I have the world’s slowest, stupidest, loudest mosquito flitting in front of my screen every third word or so. Okay, maybe it isn’t that slow, since it’s still flitting even though I’ve been whacking at it like a demented lunatic, but my opinion stands on its intelligence. Said mosquito and approximately 1,000 of its closest friends, plus or minus a few, took up residence with me on Sunday as I attempted to BBQ on a new grill. It’s summer, time to BBQ, right? But the little cretins took full advantage of the fact that I was racing back and forth between the kitchen and the deck trying to figure out hot spots and general doneness at the same time as I was trying to toss a salad, do potatoes, entertain guests, etc., etc.. Long story, but my “dinner party” was suffering from a three hour delay due to a previously rain-delayed baseball game (darn June showers) suddenly being rescheduled in the middle of my less than organized family dinner. The dinner was held to celebrate the series of birthdays that hit my family in late June/early July, which does call into question what exactly was going on late every September that it was the only time the entire extended family appeared to be fertile, but… I digress. Suffice it to say, it wasn’t the best time to be testing a new grill and those darn mozzies seemed to know intuitively that I was a mildly distracted. Maybe not so stupid after all.

So here we are. July, in its mosquito infested glory (thanks June) has arrived, bringing summer (we hope) and the Stampede. For the first half of July, Calgary and its outlying communities become obsessed. Inner cowboys are let out (even though some really shouldn’t be – people, do you not own a mirror?) while we all see how many days we can go without actually paying for a meal. Breakfast is a no-brainer – if you can tolerate lots of pancakes, questionable eggs and gnarled up sausages, breakfast for those 10 days is a done deal. Lunch can be a bit trickier; it definitely pays to work downtown during Stampede if your inner cowboy is cheap enough to forage for free Stampede lunches in the concrete jungle (range? ranch?). If you happen to be a well-connected cowpoke, those lunches are actually pretty good, but the resulting liver abuse can be a bit off-putting. But there is a key, a trick if you will, to having a successful Stampede that goes beyond food and drink. Pay attention here if you are new to the area or if this is your first time to the rodeo (literally). To have a successful Stampede, ALWAYS remember the following: ABSOLUTELY NO MEANINGFUL WORK CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED DURING THE ENTIRE 10 DAYS I’m pretty sure there’s an actual by-law to that effect somewhere. From the time William Shatner first appears on 9th Ave to the last frantic purchase of Dream Home tickets on the following Sunday night – No. Meaningful. Work. At all. Remember this as you stumble back to the office from a festive “lunch”. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to hunt down a fly swatter…

You know summer is in full swing come July 1st. The word ‘Yahoo’ comes to mind for a few different reasons and I do believe no other explanation is required; not if you are a true Albertan. July and August are the months when it is time to dust off your cowboy boots and kick up your heels, do a little line dancing, drink a little beer and party!! We have got to be the luckiest people I know, because just in our little neck of the woods we have “The Strathmore Stampede and Heritage Days” August 1st thru 4th, “Langdon Days” July 18th thru 20th, “Carseland’s 100 Year Centennial” July 18th thru 20th and the Carseland Golf Tournament July 19th. With all that partying going on, just remember to drink responsibly –read “The Family Page” to find out some real scary statistics on alcohol. Summer can be so fun, just don’t mess it up by drinking too much and doing something stupid. On a different note, we have included tons of good camping recipes, affirmations to make you the best you can be and all our amazing contributors with all their amazingly good stuff!! You are going to love our first ever “Newsy Neighbour Directory” your new go-to place whenever you are looking for just about everything. Keep it close and remember to support these local businesses! They support us so we can support you. Let’s all keep paying it forward; it’s just the right thing to do. Yahoo - Yippee kiyay!!

#2. Pay attention to people’s feet. If you approach two people in the middle of a conversation, and they only turn their torsos and not their feet, they don’t want you to join in the conversation. Similarly, if you are in a conversation with a co-worker who you think is paying attention to you and their torso is turned towards you but their feet are facing in another direction, they want the conversation to end. You should check out Carol Kinsey Goman’s research on these types of things in the workplace. #3. Foot-in-the-door phenomenon. People are more likely to agree to do a task for you if you ask them to do something simpler first. (Gradual Commitment… makes people then think you like them!) #4. Alternatively, you ask them to do an unreasonable task, and they’ll say no, so then you ask for what you wanted, a much more reasonable task, and they’re more likely to agree that way. #5. If you ask someone to do you a small favour, cognitive dissonance will make them believe that because they did that favour, they therefore must like you. (Ben Franklin) #6. If you ask someone a question and they only partially answer, just wait. If you stay silent and keep eye contact, they will usually continue talking.

#7. Chew gum when you’re approaching a situation that would make you nervous like public speaking or bungee jumping. Apparently, if we are ‘eating’ something, our brains trip and it reasons, ‘I would not be eating if I were danger. So I’m not in danger’. #8. Avoid the sidewalk shuffle by looking intently over the person’s shoulder, or between people’s heads in a group. Your gaze shows them where you’re going. They’ll drift toward the opposing side/create a gap to avoid you. #9. When you’re studying/learning something new, teach a friend how/about it. Let them ask questions. If you’re able to teach something well, you understand it. #10. People will remember not what you said but how you made them feel. #11. For interviews, I recommend altering your psychological state beforehand. Tell yourself “I’ve known these people all my life. We’re old friends catching up. I can’t wait to see them”. Visualize the experience, shaking hands, making eye contact, having conversation. What things can you not wait to tell them? Hold an open pose… stand with your legs shoulder-width apart, hands on your hips, and shoulders back while doing this and SMILE. This may sound cliché, but you are in charge of your own psychological state and the power of suggestion is strong. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

#12. If you get yourself really happy and excited to see other people, they will react the same to you. It doesn’t always happen the first time, but it will definitely happen next time. #13. My personal favourite is when people are angry at me; if I stay calm, it’ll get them even angrier, and be ashamed about it after. #14. If you have a warm hand when you shake somebody’s hand, you immediately become a more desirable person to get along with. #15. People have a certain image of themselves and will fight tooth and nail to cling to it. Use this information wisely. You can make people dislike you by attacking their self-image.

#16. False attribution of arousal. When you take somebody out on a first date, take them somewhere exciting that will get their heart beating. For example, take them on a roller coaster or to a horror film. This gets their adrenaline up. It makes them think they enjoy spending time with you, rather than the activity. #17. The key to confidence is walking into a room, and assuming everyone already likes you. #18. The physical effects of stress (increased breathing rate, heart rate, etc.) mirrors identically the physical effects of courage. So when you’re feeling stress from any situation, immediately reframe it: your body is getting ready to do courage; it’s not feeling stress. A great example of cognitive reframing, researchers found that you do better when you appraise a stressful situation as a challenge, not a threat. #19. Refer to people you’ve just met by their name. People loving being referred to by their name, and it will establish a sense of trust and friendship right away.

#20. If you make the biggest smile you can, you will automatically feel happier. #21. The moment your alarm wakes you up, immediately react by sitting up, pump your fists and shout “YEAH!”

CONSULTANT. SPEAKER. COACH. Some Latin Phrases ‘Argumentum ad captandum’ In order to capture the crowd (political babble to appease a crowd) ‘Ad kalendas graecas’ At the Greek Calends (the Greek calendar never had a calends – so this means ‘when pigs fly,’ kind of thing) ‘Postatem obscuri lateris nescitis’ You do not know the power of the dark side.

#22. Always give your kid a choice that makes them think they are in control. For instance, when you want your child to put his shoes on, say, ”Do you want to put your Star Wars shoes on or your shark shoes on?” #23. People are extraordinarily aware of their sense of touch. If someone (a member of the opposite sex, for example) ‘accidentally’ rests their knee on yours, let’s say, they know it’s there. #24. While studying for a big exam, chew gum with a strong taste. Right before the exam is to take place, take another piece of that same gum. The taste will awake your brain and bring you back to when you were studying, helping you remember what you read! LUSCIOUS JOYS Camping

I Love Camping! I love everything about camping; the food, the camp fire, the stars at night, fresh air and the joy of just doing nothing. Read a book, play some cards and have a few cocktails… now that is camping. Camping food is just altogether different from the cooking I do at home; it’s more like, well, camping food – hotdogs on a stick over the fire (I never eat hotdogs at home), and chicken wrapped in foil with BBQ sauce (actually, tin foil is an absolute must on any camping trip – you can cook just about anything in tin foil). Here are a few of my favourite tin foil camping recipes for you to enjoy on your next camping trip.

Grilled Foil-Pack Cheesy Fries 1 bag (14 oz.) crinkle-cut French fries 1 tbsp butter, melted 4 slices American cheese 2 tbsp sliced green onions (2 medium) 2 tbsp cooked real bacon bits Heat gas or charcoal grill to medium-high heat. Toss frozen French fries with melted butter. Tear off 2 (12-inch) lengths heavy-duty foil to make foil boats. Place half of the fries in a single layer in the center of 1 piece of foil. Loosely fold foil around edges to form a boat, leaving large hole at top to allow steam to escape; repeat with remaining fries and foil. Place foil packets on grill over indirect heat. Cover grill; cook 20 to 30 minutes, stirring once, until fries are crispy and baked through. Top each packet with 2 slices cheese; cook about 2 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Sprinkle with sliced green onions and bacon bits just before serving.

Cheesy Tin-foil Potato Packets These are super simple. One thing I want to stress is that you NEED to get the Heavy Duty tin-foil. It’s a must to avoid burnt potatoes. Spray down a sheet of tin-foil with cooking spray, and throw down a small stack of sliced potatoes. Spoon 2 tablespoons of Cream of Chicken soup on top of the potatoes, add salt and pepper to taste, and then sprinkle on some cheese. Throw in some sliced green onion, and if you like it spicy like me, add some sliced jalapeno. Then grab the opposite ends of the tin-foil and bring them up to meet each other on top. Fold over 2-3 times creating a little pocket. Fold up the ends and pinch closed. Place into BBQ and let them cook, rotating every 10-15 minutes to ensure even cooking. Open to test for done-ness, but it should take about 1 hour. 18

Sweet and Sour Chicken Packets 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts (5 oz. each) 1/4 cup sweet-and-sour sauce 1 can (8 ounces) pineapple chunks, drained 1/2 medium bell pepper, cut into strips 1/4 small onion, cut into small wedges 1/4 cup chow Mein noodles, if desired Heat gas or charcoal grill. Cut two 18x12inch pieces of heavy-duty foil. Spray with cooking spray. Place 1 chicken breast on one side of each foil piece. Top each with 1 tablespoon sweet-and-sour sauce and half of the pineapple, bell pepper and onion. Top with remaining sauce. Fold foil over chicken and vegetables so edges meet. Seal edges, making tight 1/2-inch fold; fold again. Allow space on sides for circulation and expansion. Cover and grill packets over medium heat app. 20 minutes or until juice of chicken is clear when center of thickest part is cut (170°F). Place packets on plates. Cut large X across top of each packet; fold back foil. Top with noodles.

Lemon Herb Steak Foil Packets One thin cut steak 1/2 lemon 1 sprig fresh rosemary Dried Thyme Salt (Kosher) & Pepper Butter & Olive Oil Heavy Duty Foil – 2 sheets (approx. 12 x 12) Asparagus or your choice of vegetables Preheat your grill or heat your coals on your campfire to medium high. On a piece of heavy duty tin foil (approx. 12 x 12), lightly coat with olive oil and dot with butter. Season both sides of your steak with salt and pepper. Place the steak in the center of the foil. Sprinkle with thyme, rosemary leaves and a slice of fresh lemon. Place fresh vegetables and lemon next to the steak. Dot with butter and cover with the second piece of foil over the top. Seal each side of the foil shut. Once your packets are sealed and marked, place them onto the grill at medium-high heat. Grill them for 8-10 minutes (depending on how you prefer your meat), flipping them over halfway through cooking. When they are finished grilling, let stand for 2-3 minutes before you open the foil.

for 15 minutes. Trust me, whatever you are doing will be there when you return. Trust me, you will be happier completing whatever task you were working on when you actually listen to the bell. Forgive yourself quickly. We all have human experiences but that does not mean we need to dwell on those experiences. Continually re-align with what it is you want and take actions accordingly. Create a joyous and fun family-filled summer. Watch the August issue for three more simple strategies.

How to Create the Summer You Wish to Have Do you want to look back on summer in September and say What an Awesome Summer That Was?

Creating Strategies for Living the Life of Your Dreams Results Oriented Coaching Programs (starting July 2)

Many of us find ourselves in September noticing how fast summer has flown by; we are full into the business of getting our children all set up for a successful school year and their fall sports. Maybe you have kept yourself so busy through the summer you don’t know where it’s gone when fall comes. We can stay on top of it all AND have a kid-filled summer too, by following these three simple strategies:

lomendaenergy.com 403.861.4810

1. Practice being present It is a present to be present in the present. Let’s break that down a little. It is a present, it is a gift, to stop and breathe in the joy of the moment. How many mothers or fathers can attest to being fully present at their child’s birth? Nothing took your attention away. Every little moment, every second you were fully present. That was a gift you gave yourself and your child. It was a gift you never had to TRY to do, because you just did it. You have greatness within you, just reach in and grab it.

“What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it.” Get on a first name basis with your insurance agent, we are a family-owned business that is here for you.

2. Focus on what you want Stop trying, start being, start doing. Keep it simple and focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. If you focus on what you don’t want you are sure to get it. Be careful of the stories you tell yourself, for they become true for you. Recently, I had a conversation with my mom: Mom: I can’t find that document the government sent me. You know, when I put it there I was saying to myself, I’m not going to remember where I put this. Me: (laughing out loud) Mom I told you, your mind is so powerful, why did you say that to yourself? Mom: (also laughing really hard now) I know, why did I say that? Do you want to have a joyous and relaxed summer? Do exactly that. Drive to and from work smiling and happy. Put some music on and dance with your children. Dance with your spouse. Stop complaining about the weather; enjoy each part of it. Enjoy it when it’s windy, enjoy it when it’s rainy and enjoy it when it’s sweltering hot. All are parts of what makes our summer complete. 3. Recess!!!!! When the recess bell rings, have you ever heard a child say, “I’ve got to do ________ before I can go outside”? Make a recess bell for your home. When that bell rings, STOP whatever you are doing and play 20

FANCY ICE CUBES Cucumber/Basil Ice Cubes. This refreshing cube will add a small refreshing hint of cucumber and basil to your drink. Peel and dice one large cucumber. Dice two or three sprigs of fresh basil. Never use dried basil and make sure you finely chop the basil. Combine the cucumber and basil in a bowl. Mix well, as you will want to get an equal amount of basil and cucumber in each ice cube. Place ½ teaspoon of the mixture in each ice cube tray. Add water and freeze overnight or until completely frozen. Goes good with vodka or gin and tonic. Wine Cubes White wine makes for a refreshing summer sipper, but a warm version? No thanks. Chill that wine with wine cubes (it’s as easy as pouring and freezing). For an even fancier variety, freeze champagne for a lightly fizzed wine that’s perfect for sangria. Fig and Rosemary Infused Ice Cubes. Dice and quarter fresh figs, leaving skin intact. To fill a full ice cube tray, you’ll need approximately three to four medium sized fresh figs. Remove sprigs of rosemary from its stem until you can fill ¼ of a cup. Make sure you opt for fresh rosemary instead of dried to get the full flavour. Combine figs and rosemary and place ½ teaspoon of the mixture into ice cube tray. Add water and freeze. Goes good with hot apple cider, ginger beer or bourbon Lime and Mint Ice Cubes. Cut limes into quarters and then remove the skin. Use a sharp paring knife to carefully cut the skin away from the lime; also remove

any remaining seeds. Dice ½ cup of fresh mint. Finely dice mint so that you have small slivers--the smaller the better. Combine the mint and lime in a separate bowl and the place one lime sliver along with ¼ teaspoon of the mint in each ice cube tray. Add water and freeze. Goes good with mojitos or beer. Chocolate Milk Cubes Pour and freeze chocolate milk into cubes to cool off (and jazz up!) a plain glass of milk. Feeling fancy? Toss the frozen chocolate milk cubes into a food processor or blender, and pulse for a single-ingredient chocolate milk slushie. Honey and Lemon Ice Cubes. These cubes may also be tasty to enjoy on their own when you have a cold. Chop one to two large fresh lemons. Create tiny lemon wedges and keep the peel on. Place two to three lemon wedges in each ice cube tray and then add a few squirts of honey. Consider adding a squirt or two of lemon juice for an extra tangy cube. Add water and freeze. Goes good with Iced Tea Blackberry/Raspberry Ice Cubes. This no dicing or cutting recipe is about as easy (and delicious) as it can be. Wash a small pint of blackberries and raspberries. Look for berries that are on the smaller side so you can pack more berries into each cube. Place two to three berries in each ice cube tray and cover with water. Freeze and voila! Goes good with vodka soda or fruit smoothie. Resources: www.Wikihow.com, dailyburn.com

Hind-Lick Maneuver

Two cowboys from Calgary were sitting at a bar, when a young lady nearby began to choke on a hamburger. She gasped and gagged, and one Calgarian turned to the other and said, “That little gal is havin’ a bad time. I’m agonna go over there and help. He ran over to the young lady, held both sides of her head in his big, Alberta hands, and asked, “Kin ya swaller? Gasping, she shook her head no. He asked, “Kin ya breathe? Still gasping, she again shook her head, no. With that, he yanked up her skirt, pulled down her underpants and licked her butt. The young woman was so shocked that she coughed up the piece of hamburger and began to breathe on her own. The Calgarian sat back down with his friend and said, “Ya know, it’s sure amazin’ how that hind-lick maneuver always works.

Dear Alcohol, First & foremost, let me tell you that I’m a huge fan of yours. As my friend, you always seem to be there when needed. The perfect postwork cocktail, a beer at the game, and you’re even around for the holidays, hidden inside chocolates, and you warm us when we’re stuck in the midst of endless family gatherings. However, lately I’ve been wondering about your intentions. While I want to believe that you have my best interests at heart, I feel that your influence has led to some unwise consequences: 1. Phone calls: While I agree with you that communication is important, I question the suggestion that any conversation of substance or necessity takes place after 2 a.m. Why would you make me call those ex-boyfriends/girlfriends when I know for a fact they do not want to hear from me? 2. Eating: Now, you know I love a good meal, but why do you suggest that I eat a taco with chilli sauce, along with a big Italian meatball and some stale chips (washed down with WINE & topped off with a Kit Kat after a few cheese curls & chilli cheese fries)? I’m an eclectic eater, but I think you went too far this time. 3. Clumsiness: Unless you’re subtly trying to tell me that I need to do more yoga to improve my balance, I see NO need to hammer the issue home by causing me to fall down. It’s completely unnecessary, and the black & blue marks that appear on my body mysteriously the next day are beyond me. Similarly, it should never take me more than 45 seconds to get the front door key into the lock. 4. Furthermore: The hangovers have GOT to stop. This is getting ridiculous. I know a little penance for our previous evening’s debauchery may be in order, but the 3pm hangover immobility is completely unacceptable. My entire day is shot. I ask that, if the proper precautions are taken (water, vitamin B, bread products, aspirin) prior to going to sleep/passing out face down on the kitchen floor with a bag of popcorn, the hangover should be minimal & in no way interfere with my daily activities. Alcohol, I have enjoyed our friendship for some years now & would like to ensure that we remain on good terms. You’ve been the invoker of great stories, the provocation for much laughter, and the needed companion when I just don’t know what to do with the extra money in my pockets. In order to continue this friendship, I ask that you carefully review my grievances above & address them immediately. I will look for an answer no later than Thursday at 3pm (pre-happy hour) on your possible solutions, and hopefully we can continue this fruitful partnership. Thank you, One of your many fans

FAMILY PAGE SUMMER AND ALCOHOL

“Moderation is the key” Don’t we all look forward to summer every year? Summer is a wonderful time for outdoor activities with family and friends. For many people, a day at the beach, on the boat, or at a backyard barbecue will include drinking alcoholic beverages. But excessive drinking and summer activities don’t mix. Drinking impairs both physical and mental abilities and it also decreases inhibitions—which can lead to tragic consequences on the water, on the road, and in the great outdoors. In fact, research shows that half of all water recreation deaths of teens and adults involve the use of alcohol and the summer holidays are some of the most dangerous times of the year to be on the road. I’m all in for having a couple cocktails on a hot summer day, but like everything else in life – moderation is the key. You have got to know when to say NO!!

sets off a chain reaction, so to speak, in our brains. Each stage of impairment signals that a new area of the brain is being affected. As we continue to drink, as new areas of our brains are affected, already-felt reactions grow worse – or further impaired. Alcohol follows a set path to other areas of the brain resulting in a predictable pattern of early and total intoxication. The last area of the brain affected by alcohol is our brain stem, which controls involuntary reflexes like telling your lungs to breathe, or your heart to pump. At toxic levels, (BAC of .35% - .50%) alcohol slows or stops the functions in the brain stem, often resulting in death without early intervention.

You have got to know when to say NO!!

But long before alcohol affects the brain stem, it has already been absorbed by the major organs in our bodies. Alcoholism is known to cause: • Inflammation of the liver leading to cirrhosis • Lowered blood pressure increasing chances of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure • Irritation of the stomach lining leading to ulcers • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) • Increased risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx and Combining esophagus • Sexual dysfunction in men alcohol and drugs

When you drink alcohol, roughly 20% is absorbed straight from your stomach into your bloodstream. The other 80% is taken up from your small intestine. This explains why eating before you drink can slow down the effects of alcohol, if your tummy is full of food, it’s harder for the alcohol to end up by the stomach walls, where it can be absorbed. It’s also why drinking on an empty stomach can have such a speedy effect; 20% of the alcohol gets STRAIGHT into your bloodstream, and straight to work.

How it really works Alcohol is a depressant; it slows the nervous system. Alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream through the stomach and small intestine and spreads quickly throughout the body. Drinking alcohol

The damage has already spread...

Combining Alcohol and Drugs It’s very common for people to combine illicit and prescription

is always dangerous because you have no idea how the two will react inside you.

drugs with alcohol. When this is done, the effects of other depressants (like marijuana) are increased, or the effects of stimulants (such as cocaine) are reduced (usually). Combining alcohol and drugs is always dangerous because you have no idea how the two will react inside you. Combining depressants can result in lowered heart and breathing rates, for instance. Combining alcohol with stimulants causes stress to your heart and other organs and keeps you from feeling the full effect of either substance, increasing your chance of overdose.

Canadian Statistics

The statistics for motor vehicle crashes and impairmentrelated crashes among young drivers are alarming.

• Road crashes continue to be leading cause of death among teenagers. The statistics for motor vehicle crashes and impairment-related crashes among young drivers are alarming. Young people have the highest rates of traffic death and injury per capita among all age groups and the highest death rate per kilometer driven among all drivers under 75 years of age. • More 19-year-olds die or are seriously injured than any other age group. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 16 to 25 year olds, and alcohol and/or drugs are a factor in 55% of those crashes. 16-25 year olds constituted 13.6% of the population in 2010, but made up almost 33.4% of the impairment-related traffic deaths. • 79% of people in Alberta over the age of 15 drink to some extent. • Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance in Canada. • 24% of offenders entering federal custody (2 years' imprisonment or more) report having been under the influence of alcohol when they committed the crime • More than 2,700 children are born each year with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder • In 2002, alcohol accounted for more than $14.6 billion in costs (that’s $463 per person) and represented 36% of the total costs of substance abuse. – MADD Canada • Motor vehicle crashes, liver cirrhosis, suicides, esophageal cancer, and arrhythmias were the leading causes of alcohol-related deaths.

— MADD Canada • Males: Account for 87% of the young fatally injured drinking drivers and 89% of the seriously injured drinking drivers. • Summertime: Young drinking drivers are most likely to be killed or injured in the summer (32.4% and 40.8% respectively) and least likely to be killed or injured in the winter (8% and 11.4% respectively). • Weekend: A large percentage of young drinking drivers die or are seriously injured on the weekend. • Night time: The vast majority of young drinking drivers die or are seriously injured in crashes at night. • At fault: In nearly two-thirds of the alcohol-related multiple vehicle crashes, it was the fatally injured teen driver who had been drinking and not the other drivers. • Crashes: By the time a driver reaches a blood alcohol content of .10%, he or she is 51 times more likely than a non-drinking driver to be involved in a fatal crash. Now, alcohol has been around in various cultures for almost 10,000 years; people have been drinking this fermented drink (ethanol) to celebrate life forever. Enjoy your favourite cocktail this summer, but remember to “Drink Responsibly” and don’t do something stupid. “Alcohol ruined me financially and morally, broke my heart and the hearts of too many others. Even though it did this to me and it almost killed me and I haven't touched a drop of it in seventeen years, sometimes I wonder if I could get away with drinking some now. I totally subscribe to the notion that alcoholism is a mental illness because thinking like that is clearly insane.” ― Craig Ferguson Kathryn Hartwell

The Horse Seller

A man is selling a horse. He says to another man, “There’s something you should know about the horse. He stops running when you say, ‘Amen,’ and he starts running when you say, ‘Praise the Lord.’” “No problem,” the other man says. “I’ll take it.” The man begins to ride away on the horse. He decides to test the horse. “Amen,” he says, and the horse stops on the road, just as the other man had said he would. “Praise the Lord!” The horse tokes off running like mad. The rider holds on as tight as he can. As he looks ahead, he notices that they are racing towards a cliff. He begins screaming, “Stop!!! Stop, you stupid horse!! Whoah!!” Nothing works. So he begins praying, “Dear God, PLEASE make the horse stop! PLEASE!!! AMEN!” The horse stops right at the edge of the cliff. With great enthusiasm and joy, the man screamed, “PRAISE THE LORD!!”

A Mindful Revolution A Mindful Minute By Rebecca Stone – Becky is a yoga instructor and the owner of Pranava Yoga in Strathmore, AB. Pranava yoga is a community minded studio, fostering the growth of the yoga community in Strathmore (and the world) by promoting the values of personal practice, creativity, abundance and community spirit. Take a look at this list below: More joy Less stress Increased concentration and focus Better communication and decision making skills Would any of these things be of interest to you? This is totally a trick question, because there will be very few people who wouldn’t want to improve in at least one of these areas of their lives. There are vast 30

economic industries that have come into being to help provide exactly these things for us – be it counselling or coaching services, self-help books, the beauty and diet industries, and so many more. I suppose it would be fair to include the North American idea of what yoga is in that list, as well. What if I were to tell you that there something that you can do to see great improvement in all of these areas of life, and more, and that it need not cost you a dime nor any extra time? And not only that, but you don’t need any special skills or tools? Throughout the western world, there is this new idea called MINDFULNESS. (It is only new to our part of the world, as it has been an established practice for many centuries in many cultures). Mindfulness is getting a lot of press these days, and for good reason. The practice of becoming mindful is changing people’s lives, or at the very least, their experience of it. The simplest definition of mindfulness that I have come across is this: “continuous, clear awareness of the present moment”. Truly a simple idea – moment to moment awareness. Simply put, when you are doing the dishes, just be present in the act, the whole time. When you are walking in nature, be conscious and aware of nature around you. When you are speaking with a child, practice listening to them fully, without distraction. And start to put this into practice in your every waking moment. With consistent practice, you will find that the most remarkable changes can happen for you, including some of the things I listed above – and more. You can start right now. It may not be easy, but it is simple. Here are a few thoughts to help you begin: 1) Practice being aware of your breath. As Thich Nhat Hanh puts it, “Mindfulness practice should be enjoyable, not work or effort. Do www.thenewsyneighbour.com

3) Practice releasing judgements and expectations. As we practice being present in the moment, we can begin to become aware of the thoughts that are running through our mind. Mindfulness helps to still our voices, both the mouth and the mind. When we become mindful, we can create the kind of quiet and stillness that can bring healing and peace, not only to ourselves but to the world around us. There is more to share, I know… I could fill pages! I encourage you to begin your mindfulness practice right now, by simply observing your breath, and continue to work on it until being mindful is not only something you do, but rather something you have become. I would love if you would email or call to share your experiences. As you begin, do you find there are roadblocks for you? If you are practicing mindfulness now, how has it affected your life experience? Email, call or drop in for a visit – I would love to hear from you. Mindfulness and meditation are two practices that support each other beautifully, and are often intertwined. If becoming more mindful, joyful and peaceful is intriguing to you, I would love to extend an invitation to join us for our morning meditation sessions throughout the summer at Pranava. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

5 Powerful Antibiotics That Don’t Require A Prescription Antibiotics have become one of the most over-prescribed “medicines” today. As a result, people have ruined their digestive systems, and, ironically, have lowered their natural immunity to all types of infections. Get rid of infections without the digestive destruction with these five powerful natural antibiotics.

Garlic

Garlic has been used medicinally by cultures around the world for thousands of years. In fact, it was used in the 1700s to ward off the plague. Garlic possesses potent antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties and is able to help protect and facilitate removal of unfriendly bacteria. It is also very high in natural antioxidants that destroy free radicals, which also supports a strong immune system. The active ingredient in garlic, allicin, is the key component to killing and warding off harmful bacteria. Crush it to activate these compounds, and eat it raw, in a warm tea, or in lightly cooked food.

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver has been known as an effective antibiotic for centuries. In the early 1900s, Alfred Searle, founder of the Searle Pharmaceutical Company, discovered that it could kill the most deadly pathogens. Searle stated that applying colloidal silver to human subjects has been done in a large number of cases with astonishing results. The main advantage was that it was rapidly fatal to microbes without toxic action on its host.

Oil of Oregano

Oil of oregano takes care of pathogenic bacteria without disrupting beneficial bacteria. It is also antiviral and antifungal, which makes it a powerful three-in-one combination that rivals pharmaceuticals while not encouraging antibiotic resistance. The key antimicrobial ingredient in oil of oregano is carvacrol. You should ensure that your source is at least 70 percent carvacrol content in order to be effective.

Echinacea

Echinacea has been used to treat a wide variety of infections for hundreds of years. Traditionally, it was used to treat open wounds, diphtheria, blood poisoning, and other bacterial related illnesses. Today, this potent herb is used mostly for colds and flu, due to its ability to destroy the most dangerous forms of bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus, which causes deadly MRSA.

Manuka Honey

Perhaps the most palatable antibiotic comes in the form of manuka honey. Applied topically, it can kill a wide range of pathogens, including MRSA and flesh eating bacteria. It was also found that the treated bacteria did not build up any resistance, which would eventually render manuka honey ineffective. This is certainly not an exhaustive list of natural antibiotics, but a great start for an all-natural pharmacy. Also consider reishi mushrooms, pau d’arco, una de gato, olive leaf extract, cloves, turmeric, and even lemons to round out your antibiotic arsenal. GET OUTSIDE AND ENJOY THE SUNSHINE The snow is finally gone and the days are warm and long. Time to get serious about summer and spend every possible moment outdoors! Nothing creates lasting summer memories like a glorious day at the beach, and Alberta has lots of lakes and a white sandy beach is never far away. Pick your favourite water sport: motor boating, water skiing, jet skiing or swimming. Sail or kite surf. Pack a picnic and make a leisurely day of it. Watch the sunset and end the day with a cold beverage, barbeque, and a bonfire.

Now, back in the day when I was a youngster in the 1950s and 1960s (I think I am dating myself), horseback trail riding and hiking were my favourite summer activities. Actually, my parents would ship my sister and myself off to a horse camp just outside of Sylvan Lake for 4 weeks every summer for a number of years and we loved it. Now that I’m a bit older, my outdoor recreational activities are more along the line of a walk with the dogs. But I do try to stay active and spend as much time outdoors as possible – summer is just too darn short and I believe incorporating physical activity into your leisure and recreation activities is an ideal way to fit more exercise into your schedule, as well as address your mental wellness. DO IT FOR YOUR HEALTH Taking part in recreational activities, particularly outdoors, can improve your physical wellness. In fact, people who frequently take advantage of park activities have fewer doctor visits, lower body mass indexes and lower systolic blood pressures than those who don’t. Mental wellness is an important part of your overall health and can impact your physical well-being. Participating in leisure and recreation activities can help you better manage stress and reduce depression. Leisure provides you the chance to find balance in your life; it also puts you in control of how you’re spending your time, which is an important consideration because you may feel overwhelmed by obligations. Taking part in leisure activities as a family is also beneficial for your kids because you’re modeling healthy ways to handle stress and emotions. Participating in leisure activities regularly reduces depression; in fact, just thinking about past outdoor recreation experiences can improve your mood. Finding balance is also a reason why leisure and recreation can enhance your quality of life. Physical recreation, in particular, is associated with improved self-esteem. In addition, you’re more likely to feel satisfied about your life when you regularly take part in recreation activities. This has significant implications for your mental health and, in turn, your physical health

What Are Naturopathic Doctors? Naturopathic doctors can be thought of as the general practitioners of natural medicine. Naturopathic doctors blend modern scientific knowledge with natural and traditional forms of healing; this gives them a unique skill set – on one hand, they have a solid foundation in the physical workings of the body, and use medical assessments with lab testing and physical exams. In the other hand, they have an in-depth knowledge of a number of forms of natural medicine. Diet and nutrition is foundational to their treatments and provides the building blocks for health. They can balance the body that is out of balance, both physically and energetically, using botanical medicine, neural injection therapy and acupuncture. Homeopathy stimulates the body to heal itself and so can provide deeper and longer lasting benefits.

BELL PEPPERS They come in all different colours— red, orange, yellow, purple and green— and they are full of vitamin C; they kick up collagen production for healthy hair and skin.

The treatments that are chosen are different for each person. It isn’t the condition or disease that is treated, but the person and their unique circumstances. What is wonderful about having so many treatment options is that your naturopathic doctor can address many aspects of health, and there are few people that cannot benefit from naturopathic care!

LOBSTER The high zinc content in lobster protects cell membranes, helps maintain collagen, and promotes speedy skin renewal.

Your naturopath specializes in listening to your life experience, really understanding it and then translating that into a solution that improves your health and wellness. Be prepared: you will most likely take that information and make transformations in your health and your life! The beauty of this approach is that symptoms resolve, and overall vitality and energy improve in the long term.

SPINACH Spinach delivers a triple dose of wrinkle-fighting antioxidants: vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene. CHIA SEEDS Packed with protein, fibre, and loads of omega-3s, which reduce inflammation. They absorb up to ten times their weight in water, and they keep you feeling fuller longer. ALMONDS Almonds are rich in flavonoids (which promote heart health) and vitamin E, a nutrient that’s vital to skin health. Resources: www.webmd.com, www.allure.com 34

What is chronic inflammation? What is chronic inflammation? People tend to think inflammation of an injured joint, for instance, which is red and swollen. That is indeed a symptom of an inflammatory process, but is considered acute inflammation. Chronic inflammation is chemical response to an irritation, non-degradable pathogen, auto immune reactions, or persistent foreign bodies. Can you have inflammation without noticeable symptoms? Absolutely! Long before a symptom manifests, there can be inflammation. The onset of chronic inflammation is delayed and slow, taking months or years to manifest and has any number of causes. We live in a society that is busy all the time. We work long hours in high stress work environments. We don’t take our vacations, even when they are paid. We sit at our desk for hours on end and then we sit on the couch to “relax” at the end of the day. We have become lazy and inactive. Our nation is chronically overweight and sick. The Western diet is known to contain many inflammatory foods contributing to chronic, low-grade inflammation. We don’t sleep well and compensate with caffeine and “energy drinks”. This trend needs to be addressed. Starting today we need to make changes to the way we are choosing to live our lives. Otherwise, we are setting ourselves up for failure. Everything about how the vast majority choose to live creates chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation then leads to sickness. Sickness leads to disease and early death. How can you reduce chronic inflammation? • Start by getting a proper nights’ sleep; that is, eight hours of actual sleep time. • Drink lots of pure water every day. • Get out in the fresh air for some sunshine and exercise. • Take a friend with you for the added social interactions that are proven to make you live longer. • In general, inflammatory foods are highly processed or refined, high on the glycemic index and containing little or no fibre. As well, foods high in saturated or damaged fats are inflammatory. Learn to avoid these by eating only unprocessed, fresh foods. • Get regular chiropractic adjustments to keep your joints moving properly and reduce the inflammation trapped within them. • Meditate and relax daily to reduce the stress in your life. Choose one thing to change tomorrow and get started on the inflammation free life that you want! bring along some water with you and those of you that have infants and toddlers, remember that they can become much more easily dehydrated than you. And Pet Parents: remember your pets can get dehydrated too in the sun; please do not leave them in the car for any amount of time alone. 2. As we talked about dehydration, remember to limit your amount of exposure to the sun. Try wearing a hat, light loose-fitting clothes and use natural sunscreens. If you feel that you have overexposed yourself to too much sun, try Aloe Vera gel for the healing and cooling feeling it gives you. If away from home, keep some handy with you! Remember, we need to protect our eyes from the sun too, so wear some sunglasses that have UV ray protection. 3. If you are planning to do a lot of walking or any sport activities, try wearing the appropriate shoes for your outdoor activities. Make sure they are light, comfortable, and don’t forget to wear cotton socks; they can help you avoid blisters and sprains.

Natural Healthy Tip for Your Summer Fun

4. To maintain your energy levels on those long hot summer days, you can find nature’s bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables now at your local Farmer’s Markets and Supper Markets. Eat foods that are light and cooling, such as vegetable juices, raw vital salads, fresh fruits and vegetables and a lot of water, along with some light proteins such as nuts, seeds, sprouted beans, soy products, yogurt, and cottage cheese are great choices to add to your meals or as a snack. Fish and poultry can also be a great change to your summer meals. 5. Summer teas are a great way to keep hydrated and they just taste great. Here is how: Take a clear half or one gallon glass jar and fill it with spring water; add flowers and leaves (or tea bags) or peppermint, chamomile or lemon grass. Make sure they are of safe quality. Leave in the sun for two hours or up to a whole day and then enjoy. You can also make moon tea to help enhance your lunar, dreamy side by letting your herbs steep in the cooling, mystical moonlight. You can add thing like a little orange or lemon peel, or a sprig of rosemary and maybe a few jasmine flowers. 6. Last but not least; make sure that when traveling, take activities for your family to do, and a natural first aid kit for bites, bee strings, or injuries. And please remember to check for ticks after any kind of hikes. So go out and have a wonderful summer with family and friends; check out this wonderful back yard of ours and enjoy nature and all it has to offer you! Have a happy, healthy and fun summer!

Summer is already here and we are about to go on summer vacations, camping, farmer’s markets, fairs, and maybe even be going to a Stampede or two! Here are some tips to help you enjoy your summer fun: 1. Drinking water is very vital to your health. Water helps us to stay cool and hydrated on those hot summer days. We need to drink at least 16-32 ounces on just a normal summer day, much more when the temperature rises. When you are out and about,

www.idealnutritioncalgary.com SUNBURN REMEDIES ALOE VERA – This miracle skin plant has been around for thousands of years and was used for healing by ancient civilizations. Aloe Vera has natural healing properties; best of all its soothing, cool properties help pull the heat out of the sunburn and provide sunburn pain relief. When you buy an Aloe product, check how much Aloe it really has, as many of these products contain only a small amount. The best is to buy 100% Aloe Vera Gel. For a moisturizing effect, open a Vitamin E capsule and mix with the gel. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR – Apple Cider Vinegar is also a well known home remedy for sunburn. It is known to relieve pain and help to prevent blisters. Your best choice for vinegar is all-natural vinegar purchased from the health food store, rather than the grocery store, which usually contains preservative and additives. To apply, soak gauze or use cotton balls and dab affected areas. MILK - Milk has soothing and healing properties and will nourish and soften your skin. It’s probably something you will have right in your camping cooler. But you should try washing it off at the end of the day, or you may smell like cheese in the morning. If you’re at home, pour a whole gallon into a tub of cool water; you can also sprinkle a packet of dried milk into your tub. For some additional healing benefits, you can add a cup of ground oatmeal. TEA – Tea contains tannic acid that helps to eliminate the sting of a burn. Wet the tea bags and lay on the burn location. If you are at home, put several tea bags in a tub of cool water, let it steep for a while, then have a soak.

BAKING SODA – Baking soda seems to be a natural home remedy for just about everything, and sunburn is no exception. A good soak in a baking soda bath soothes the skin, takes away the sting, reduces the redness, and almost everyone has a box lying around. You can also make a paste with water and soothe it over the burn. Take it easy out there is summer and remember, you are probably burning before you feel it!

It’s no secret that COC president Marcel Aubut wants Canada to host another Winter Olympics! His first choice is Quebec City, however Mont-Sainte Anne in the Jacques-Cartier Valley 20 minutes out of the city is not up to Olympic standards for Alpine events so really, in my opinion, it’s a none starter. It’s no secret the Calgary Flames want a new arena for their hockey team and a new stadium for their football team. A successful Olympic bid for Calgary would be a win-win for all the major stakeholders and a major boost to our aging Olympic venues.

A successful Olympic bid for Calgary would be a win-win for all the major stakeholders and a major boost to our aging Olympic venues. Calgary Flames President and CEO Ken King has been networking very hard behind the scenes with Aubut. Aubut has referred to King as “the pope of Alberta” and he made him a co-chair of the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame. The very successful Hall of Fame dinner hosted at the Saddledome last month was a major fund raiser for the COC. Do you think the COC paid any rent for the building? Now here’s another twist to the story. The International Olympic Committee is facing a major crisis in finding a host for the 2022 Winter Games. Two candidate cities dropped out of the race and two more are 38

threatening to do the same. The way things are going, the winning city could be awarded next year by default! Or maybe, the IOC will pull an unprecedented move and reopen the bid process?

Now here’s another twist to the story. The International Olympic Committee is facing a major crisis in finding a host for the 2022 Winter Games Munich and St. Moritz-Davos withdrew planned bids when voters in Germany and Switzerland voted ‘no’ in referendums. Stockholm, one of the five declared candidates, pulled out last December after the city government declined to offer financial backing. Two month ago, the Polish city of Krakow dropped out after 70 per cent of voters rejected the bid in a referendum. That leaves four cities in contention for now: Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing, China; Lviv, Ukraine; and Oslo, Norway. The bid from Lviv has been on hold because of the turmoil in Ukraine. It’s very likely there will only be three bids in play when the IOC meets this month in Lausanne, Switzerland to decide which cities go to the final stage. The host city will be selected by the full IOC in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 31, 2015. While Norway (Olso hosted the 1952 Games, Lillehammer hosted in 1994) would be the obvious choice to host the 2022 Games, there is www.thenewsyneighbour.com

The feeling is the Norwegians love the Olympics but hate the IOC. 60 percent of the population has opposed the bid, the government has not approved the required financial guarantees and the Olso Organizing Committee has asked the IOC to step up with additional financial support. until December and the IOC is as much about entitlement as Alison Redford’s former PC government. So while it’s unlikely Calgary could get into the mix for the 2022 Games, 2026 is a real possibility. As a major stakeholder in the IOC, NBC television would love to see the United States host the coveted 2024 Summer Olympics (Atlanta was the last US summer host in 1996). This would open the door for Calgary to host the world in 2026. In the meantime, the Calgary Flames and the Calgary Stampeders will just keep those new stadium plans in the top drawer of Ken King’s desk! They will be pulled out when the timing is right.

About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for over 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on News Talk 770 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

China can certainly afford the big price tag to host the Games, but Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and with Korea hosting in 2018, does this really make sense? China could win by default, making Beijing the first city to host a Summer and Winter Olympic Games. IOC president Thomas Bach is well aware the public perception is that the games cost too much to host. The 51 billion dollar price tag in Sochi was a good slap in the face. The IOC is attempting to address these concerns with their “Agenda 2020” blueprint for the future of the Olympic movement. But in typical IOC turtle-like fashion, this will not be voted on

I Wanna be a Bear

3/31/08 4:08:26 PM

If you’re a bear, you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that. Before you hibernate, you’re supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that, too. If you’re a bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you’re sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that. If you’re a mama bear, everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too. I could deal with that. If you’re a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat. Yup... I wanna be a bear.

No, I Don’t Have It All Together Rather than walking in my sleep, apparently I talk in my sleep. The latest incident occurred this past weekend, when I allegedly kept saying “I’ll never do this again. I’ll never do this again.” Admittedly, I am known for taking on a lot; my mind fills with multiple little details at all hours of the day and night, so I can only imagine what my subconscious was telling me to “never do again”. Luckily, through the wise counsel of friends and colleagues, boundaries are being set in place and I am learning the value of saying “NO,” and more importantly, “letting go.”

My daughter’s favourite story, to date, about me talking in my sleep is around some lost candy canes. Apparently I was vocalizing how urgent it was that I locate them while sleeping. In the morning when she told me that she hadn’t been able to find any, I looked at her blankly, having no idea what she was talking about. I did redeem myself though with some large chocolate Easter bunnies that I had hidden under the bed and forgotten about. The children discovered them at Thanksgiving, just in time for Christmas. Chocolate bunnies or dust bunnies – under the bed is a great hiding place. When too much is happening, all sorts of little forgetful things tend to occur. Last weekend, when my daughter arrived home after working a 12 hour shift, she walked into a house that she says smelled like popcorn. In reality, it was almost a pound of butter melted all over her kitchen table and unto the floor. With no dogs around, she had to clean it up. Extra work she wasn’t anticipating. I learned of this through a Facebook post advising family members how to avoid such situations in the future. Turns out, I’m the guilty family member. I had left the butter on the table, exposed to the sun through large west facing windows on the longest day of the year, after serving the grandsons pancakes and then taking them to visit their uncle. As I shared the story with a friend, she suggested I let it go, but I plan on making the story bigger and better, creating a funny family memory that may become part of my eulogy. Nothing like making plans in advance. Instead of aiming for perfection or being embarrassed and suppressing whatever has gone awry, it is more valuable to laugh at ourselves in these moments and create a fabulous story. I learned this trick from a dear friend, who has the craziest things happen in her life just because she is who she is. One of my favourite stories from her took place when she walked into her house dripping wet. Her explanation was how she had stopped to wash her new car, a Chrysler La Baron convertible her husband had given her as an anniversary gift. After pulling up to punch in the wash code, she drove forward into the wash bay but once there couldn’t figure out how to put up the window. She wasn’t used to electric windows and had a moment. As she retells her tales, some of which are over 30 years old, I still tear up with laughter. What a great life lesson, because while we enjoy those deep philosophical discussions, there is still nothing like sitting around a kitchen table or campfire, sharing stories and laughing until our sides hurt. What stories have you created out of your oops and mishaps? If you haven’t started yet, give it a try.

“Together Again ~ Remembering When” Carseland celebrates 100 years of memories July 18 – 20, 2014. This community led initiative celebrates the founding of the hamlet in 1914 by the Canadian Pacific Railway with the building of a cutline from Gleichen to Shepard. There are no official documents recording the hamlet’s incorporation at that time; however, that did not stop residents from planning a weekend long celebration. They aim to draw together those near and far from the neighbourhood’s past and present both residents and visitors whether young or old to be part of the festivities. It all gets started on Friday afternoon with the Grand Open and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Downey Centennial Park. The SE entrance to the hamlet has been transformed to a place where residents and visitors can enjoy a beautiful park setting while learning more about the community and its history. A Centennial Monument was commissioned from metal artist Michael Perk and will be dedicated as part of the ceremony. Many residents and almost every community organization have worked together preparing to welcome visitors and residents. The Carseland Lions Club has provided invaluable support throughout. Things kickoff Friday evening with the Carseland Firefighters Association hosting a BBQ with community fire pits (Be sure to bring your guitar and supplies for building S’mores). Get into the swing of things early Saturday, as the Speargrass Community Association hosts the Centennial Golf Tournament at Speargrass Golf Course. If golf is not your game, the Carseland and District Community and Ag Society launch Saturday with a complimentary breakfast and live music featuring Joel Ostrom’s band. Thanks to a generous donation by Agrium Inc., visitors will enjoy Carseland’s Centennial Music Festival throughout the day featuring local talent including Sykamore (Jordan Ostrom). Throw into the mix “Memory Lane” with its vignettes and displays of area antiques & memorabilia sponsored by Carseland Jet Setters Club, wagon rides sponsored by the Carseland Kids Wellness Coalition, the Carseland School Meet & Greet, kids activities and safety put together by Y.A.P., Bow Valley Beef and Multi 4 H Club, and 1st Carseland BPSA Scouting, and there is sure to be something there for everyone. The Centennial Dinner takes place on Saturday evening followed an evening with “Duelling Pianos”. More surprises are in store to make it a truly memorable day. The festivities do not end there. Sunday morning, Carseland’s Public Benefit Club, which celebrated its 100th Birthday in 2012, is hosting a breakfast with hot cakes, sausages and more. The Bow River Alliance Church is hosting a church service to express the community’s gratitude for the memories. This will be followed by the Closing Ceremonies and Farewell, which contains elements that folks will not want to miss. Community is something that many want to be a part of. 100 years of history and growing together provided an opportunity for this neighbourhood to shine. It does not get much better than this in hamlets in rural Alberta. Share some memories while participating in this special time in local history. We invite you to join us in celebrating 100 years! Interested in participating? Registration information is available at www.carselandcentennial.com or check out www.facebook.com/ CarselandCentennial for information about the community and its original settlers. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

T’was the beginning of summer vacation and all through the house, EVERY creature was stirring- you wish it were only a mouse! The children were shrieking, the year’s finally done; We made it through school and now it’s time for some fun! Poor me, my nerves shot, and papa annoyed, By the hyper and wild INSANE young girls and boys. From the other room constantly comes a loud crash, We have to roll our eyes and go see what was smashed.

I can come to you! $10 off your first visit!

For three months we know we won’t get a single breath, Our evil children will spend them running us to our death. We count minutes ’til bed times and a nice quiet night, mixed drinks and beers instead of Kool-Aid and ice. The weather gets hotter and sweat starts to drip, and we long for the days when on ice we would slip. Poor little babies keep complaining “We’re bored!” We reply with “Here’s a novel idea, get your hiney outdoors!”

When a child gives you a gift, even if it is a rock they just picked up, exude gratitude. It might be the only thing they have to give, and they have chosen to give it to you.

“But Mommy, can’t we take a vacation?” they cry, And that’s when we snap “If you’re going to screech like that you’d better be on fire with a stick in your eye!” Now Monday, now Tuesday, now Wednesday and Thursday, On weekends and mornings and on our once beloved Friday! From the beginning of warmth to the onset of Fall, This stupid summer just won’t seem to end at all. Like leaves in the wind away our sanity floats, As our evil children smile and gloat, Three whole months we must occupy and entertain, While wondering what must go on in a teacher’s brain. We call all around looking for a sitter, To get just one moment alone on the shi... toilet..., Deadbolts and duct tape only go so far, Take my damn money, we’ll escape in the car! Fast enough can’t come the 1st of July, Where at least day drinking won’t get even a bat of the eye. Fireworks are quiet compared to the mouths Of bratty, bored children once school has let out. Nothing quite matches the twinkle in the eyes of Mom and Dad, When the TV is flooded with “Back to School” ads. We run to the store and fill up our carts, www.thenewsyneighbour.com

The sky full of rainbows and butterfly farts! Just one more month! We can do it, we think, Our sanity is already dangling on the brink. From day trips and ice creams and annoying car rides, And sand in our lady parts from strong beach rip tides. We’ll get chubby and plump with the onset of winter, If it means a little peace while trying to make dinner. Now we understand why our folks loved homework, This gives us an all-knowing parenting smirk. It’s the last week of summer, we need not say a word, but behind their backs, we flip our children the bird. Like magic we feel our stress levels decreasing, as they start to pack their bags - my, how pleasing! Then comes that fateful day we’ve been waiting for, we usher our children right to the door. With kisses and hugs, good lucks and their pouts, we say “Happy first day of schoo l- now GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!”

Angels Explained by Children Everybody’s got it all wrong. Angels don’t wear halos anymore. I forget why, but scientists are working on it -Olive, age 9 It’s not easy to become an angel! First, you die. Then you go to Heaven, and then there’s still the flight training to go through. And then you got to agree to wear those angel clothes. -Matthew, age 9

HAPPY GANG SOCIETY OF STRATHMORE

Nicole Brooks

The Happy Gang 50+ Society of Strathmore, located in the Lambert Centre adjacent to the Library, has had a busy winter with many activities during the day. We have a dedicated group of volunteers that help each other to keep the Senior Centre humming. We are an informal group that likes to put the happy into all our activities. At 9am, you will see the Pool Players at the Centre enjoying our newer pool table. We have three tables now and they can accommodate all the players that come out from 9am to 12pm, Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Male and female players welcome. A walking program started last September, 10 to 11am. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, you will see 6 to 16 people doing a “Walk at Home” exercise. They will continue over the summer, meeting at 10am and do their walk in or outdoors, depending on the weather. Yoga has a group of dedicated enthusiasts who meet 10 to 11am every Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Card Games offer entertainment and fun most afternoons at 1:30pm. On Tuesday: Rummikube, Wednesday: Mah Jong, also Bingo is played the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the week. On Thursday, there is a good group playing Canasta. On Friday, we have lots of players for Crib. Seniors will also enjoy our various trips that we organize, using Strathmore’s Handi Bus. Watch for further information on these outings. The General Meeting is held on the second Tuesday afternoon of the month at 1:30pm. We have our well-attended Pot Luck Dinners on the fourth Tuesday evening of the month. Doors open at 5:00pm. Everyone is well fed at these gatherings. Our Hall can be rented for family and other functions and will accommodate 80 people. For inquiries, please call Christine at 403-901-1574. Stop by and check us out; you will always be welcome! Our Summer Schedule; Mah Jong will take the summer off and possibly Rummikube. There will be no Pot Luck Dinners or General Meetings until September. Our plan is to add more activities this fall, so be sure to watch for this information from the Happy Gang of Strathmore. I started hobby painting about 3 years ago and subsequently joined the Langdon Fine Arts Group where I met several artists who have encouraged me to grow and explore my own style. Thankfully, I realized that the unbridled creative process was a necessity in my life. I love nothing more than letting my brain race in several creative directions at once. It is pure joy to me. I paint in my head while exercising, am inspired almost daily by life’s most mundane and everyday objects and thoroughly enjoy bonding my pieces with other people. I love trees and colour and glass and, most of all, “just mucking around”. I paint with acrylics and oils on canvas and enamel on glass. I am always trying new ways of creating to express the joy I feel inside. Creating art has given me the courage to step out of my comfort zone again and again, as well as learning to embrace my mistakes. This isn’t much of a bio as I have no artistic education or background. I just do it because I truly love it and want my pieces to light up someone else’s space. https://www.facebook.com/NicoleBrooksArtist?focus_composer=true

The Old Man’s Weekend An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store this past Friday evening with a beautiful, much younger gal at his side. He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring. The old man said, ‘No, I’d like to see something more special.’ At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. ‘Here’s a stunning ring at only $40,000,’ the jeweler said. The lady’s eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man, seeing this said, ‘We’ll take it.’ The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, ‘By cheque. I know you need to make sure my cheque is good, so I’ll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I’ll pick the ring up Monday afternoon.’ On Monday morning, the jeweler angrily phoned the old man and said, ‘There’s no money in that account.’ ‘I know’, said the old man, ‘But let me tell you about my GREAT WEEKEND!’

So, You Want To Sell Your Home? So you want to sell your home… or, maybe, worse yet, you have to sell your home now and all you hear from everyone is how, “It is not a good time to try and sell your home,” or, “No way are you going to be able to sell your home,” and then the most scary statement of all is, “You will have to give it away or pay someone to buy it from you.” It’s an understatement to say most of what you hear on the news about real estate is not good. With anything you read or hear on the news, the worst case scenario is being reported and blowing things out of proportion. What’s worse, is many times the news actually is perpetuating the problem by keeping bad news out there longer than the problem. Apparently good news doesn’t sell. In any market, people are still buying homes. People are moving in and out of areas for a multitude of reasons and always will. While the numbers may be lower than in previous years, there are people still selling their homes and will continue to do so in good and bad markets. The good news is that - yes you can sell your home if you are motivated to do so, and it may take a few extra steps to maximize your chances. Getting started, your first real step is to decide if you truly want to sell or if you have to sell your home now. Selling your home can be a chore, so you have to be up for the task. Keeping your home spotless day after day and being available to show your home at a moment’s notice can be tiresome but necessary. If your market area is declining www.thenewsyneighbour.com

and you can wait, you might want to; however, it is all relative. Prices may continue to deteriorate and you may be waiting for awhile. Also, if you intend to buy another home, then you may have to buy less as well. In a perfect world, you would buy low and sell high, but I don’t know anyone that has been very successful at this. Okay, so let’s say you’ve decided to sell your home; now you must get prepared. A huge part of this preparation leads us into the second biggest step, which is to throw all your emotions about your home and personal attachment to it, out. You have to look at selling your home as a business venture. Bottom line is: you are trying to make as much money as you can. You will have to make your home look less personal, like taking away the numerous family portraits, so a potential buyer can see your place as their new home. It is not about what you like, it is about what they like or want.

it probably looks so good that you are rethinking your decision to sell it, but now it’s time to price your home; your 4th and final step. If your home is not priced right, it will not sell, regardless of how great it looks. Your homes selling price will be determined by what a similar home in your area has recently sold for, or perhaps a pending sale. This is what a realtor or appraiser will do to determine value. They look at a competitive market analysis of homes that have sold or are on the market currently in your neighbourhood. Of course, they will add or subtract value based on how your home matches up to other homes that have sold in the last few months. Appraisers and lenders alike look at closed sales within the last 6 months to determine value, but in many areas, they will only go back a few months if values have continued to decline in some areas. Whether you are selling your own home or working with an agent, it is universally agreed that the above steps are mandatory.

Now that you are mentally prepared, your third and very critical step is to get your home in order. This means you will have to repair everything that is broken and have your home in tip top shape. In today’s market, you will not receive an offer at all or be lowballed if there are a lot of things wrong with your home. As the selling market slows down, more and more homes are on the market that you will be competing with. Potential buyers will want to take more off the price than it would have cost you to fix it. Start with the repairs at the same time that you start to declutter your home. A potential buyer will only see your stack of papers or dust in all the window sills if it is not clean and tidy. They will never see how spacious and wonderful your home really is. Now you have your home in the best condition it’s been in for years; www.thenewsyneighbour.com

It’s the common cry for millions of parents: “Clean your room!” Seasonal events like birthdays, holidays or a new school year bring fresh motivation to the drive to get kids organized — and nowhere is there good storage and organization needed than in your children’s bedrooms. How do you help your child organize and clean up life in their bedroom? Get down to your child’s eye level in order to help him or her get organized. Look at your child’s space, storage, furniture and possessions from his or her vantage point. The view may surprise you! Adult furniture and organizing systems don’t translate well to children’s needs. Closet hanging rods are out of reach, while adult hangers don’t fit smaller clothing; and these items are not overly accessible or in reach for a child. To organize a child’s room, solutions must fit

the child. For younger children, remove closet doors entirely. Lower clothing rods and invest in child-sized hangers. Use floor-level open containers to hold toys, and open plastic baskets to store socks and underwear. Children’s rooms are usually small, often shared, and generally lack built-in storage. Yet these rooms are host to out-of-season and outgrown clothing, surplus toys, and even household overflow from other rooms. Kids can’t stay organized when the closet is crammed, the drawers are stuffed, and playthings cover each square inch of carpet. The solution: sort, store and simplify. Begin with clothing: sort it out! Store out-of-season or outgrown clothing elsewhere. Finally, simplify! Does your son really wear all 27 t-shirts crowding his drawer? Remove the extras so the remainder can stay neat and orderly in the available space. Contain and control – children’s toys usually contain multiple accessories and pieces that can become a giant disaster. Closed storage is a must to contain, organize and hide away. Use plastic shoebox containers for smaller toys, larger lidded bins for blocks, cars etc. Use specialty organizers to corral magazines and comic books, video games, or DVDs and electronics. Last but not least, organize from the bottom up, and label everything! Organizing from the bottom up will allow the most frequently used items to be accessible (and easier to put away) for your child, whereas the items that are not used as much can be tucked away up top. Inexpensive label makers are amazing for identifying where items belong in the space for proper clean up.

A contractor and a lawyer are in car accident and show up at the Pearly Gates together. St. Peter greets them. “Come with me, my sons,” he says. “I will take you to the homes where you will spend all of eternity.” The contractor and the lawyer get into St. Peter’s holy convertible, and they all head on down a beautiful golden road, which turns into a platinum road, which turns onto an even grander road paved with sparkling diamonds. They pull up in front of a huge luxury mansion, where St. Peter turns to the lawyer and says, “Here is your home for the rest of eternity, my son, enjoy! And if there is anything you need, just let me know.”

CONSTRUCTION Ltd.

The contractor is pretty excited as St. Peter goes back down the diamond studded boulevard, down the platinum highway, and onto the street of gold. Then they turn down an avenue of silver, drive along a stone alley and over an unpaved footpath to pull up in front of a rickety aluminum-siding cabin with a little picket fence. St Peter says, “Here you go!” and starts to leave. “Hey now, wait just a minute here!” says the shocked contractor. “I’ve been a good man all my life! I always did my business honestly, treated others fairly, cherished my family, and was a good steward of the Earth! How come the lawyer gets the big mansion and I get this shack?” St. Peter says: “Well, contractors are a dime a dozen here, but we’ve never had a lawyer before.”

RULE CHANGE

by CODY STUART on JUNE 20, 2014 Mandatory agreements coming to real estate transactions in Alberta. The process of buying or selling a home in Alberta will soon change as a result of new rules instituting mandatory written service agreements between consumers and real estate professionals. The agreements, which take effect July 1, have long been a standard in the industry. The move by Alberta real estate’s governing body to make them mandatory comes from the desire to increase clarity and protection for consumers, said Kevin Clark, chair of the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA). “The primary reason why RECA is introducing written service agreements between residential real estate professionals and all clients, is to ensure clients are informed about and understand what they can and should expect from their relationship with their authorized industry professional. When clients are better informed, there will be less confusion and fewer disputes,” he said. By making the change, RECA said it hopes to improve the relationship between consumers and REALTORS® by better explaining the services to be provided by the brokerage, as well as the obligations and responsibilities of the parties involved. “Since the agreements put to paper what was previously often agreed to verbally, sellers – and, more specifically, buyers – stand to gain a better understanding of the process, as well as lessen any possibilities of confusion or disputes,” added Clark. “While some buyers say they have an understanding of an agreement on what their real estate professional will do on their behalf and what services would be provided, those understandings or agreements have typically been verbal,” he said. “For the average buyer, it means they will be asked to sign a written service agreement

As part of the new agreements, buyers and sellers will also agree on the personal information that can be collected, shared and distributed as part of the transaction, including access to credit reports. The agreements also set out the fee structure real estate transactions. While the move toward the new agreements has been in the works since last September, CREB® president Bill Kirk believes more could have been done to inform buyers and sellers in the province of the impending changes and how they will be affected. “In theory, there are some benefits to consumers, but the reality is that RECA needs to do more to explain the benefits of this regulatory change to consumers,” said Kirk. “In this situation, we ask consumers and REALTORS® to understand the presentation of these forms is a regulator’s mandate with which we must comply. In any event, this new process may be an opportunity for our members to talk to their clients about the value they bring to a real estate transaction. With all that said, what does this mean for buyers in Alberta? Well, the buying process will change a little, but more importantly, buyers will be properly informed of the buying process, which is a great outcome, says Carey Rose of The Real Estate REPs at RE/MAX Realty Hori-
