No SAS role in Diana's death

There is "no credible evidence" the SAS was involved in the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales, and Dodi Al Fayed, the Metropolitan Police said on Tuesday. The Met had received material in August about their deaths in a 1997 Paris car crash, and reports in several British Sunday newspapers had suggested the new material had been passed to the police by the former parents-in-law of a former soldier, based on information that the exsoldier talked about in the past. It is believed the information was passed to the Metropolitan police through the Royal Military Police. In its statement on Tuesday, the Met said its assessment included "taking statements from a

number of individuals and reviewing records". It said the investigating officers were given "unprecedented access" to Special Forces Directorate records.

The statement continued: "Every reasonable line of enquiry was objectively pursued in order to fully evaluate any potential evidence. "The final conclusion is that whilst there is a possibility the alleged comments in relation to the SAS's involvement in the deaths may have been made, there is no credible evidence to support a theory that such claims

had any basis in fact.

"Therefore the MPS are satisfied there is no evidential basis upon which to open any criminal investigation or to refer the matter back to HM Coroner."

Former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed, Dodi's father, was "disappointed but not discouraged" by the outcome, his solicitor Simon McKay said. He called the scoping exercise "the latest whitewash in a 16-year cover up". A 2008 inquest found the couple had been unlawfully killed. Princess

Diana was 36 when she died alongside Mr Al Fayed, 42. Henri Paul was driving when their hired Mercedes crashed into a pillar in Paris's Pont de l'Alma tunnel. The crash happened after the couple had left the Ritz Hotel and were pursued by paparazzi on motorbikes. Mr Al Fayed's bodyguard, Trevor ReesJones, was the only survivor. At the inquest into their deaths, the jury found the couple had been unlawfully killed and the deaths were the result of "gross negligence" on the part of Mr Paul and the paparazzi. The paparazzi

pursuit, Mr Paul's drinkdriving and a lack of seatbelts contributed to the deaths, the jury said. The inquest lasted more than three months and heard from 250 witnesses. After the hearing, the Metropolitan Police said they had spent £8m on services arising from the inquest and the Operation

Paget investigation from 2004 to 2006.

WORLD ICKHAM’S

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

It’s Christmas!

Yesterday was The News’ and my husband’s birthdays. Normally speaking I like to take birthdays off and do something different like, visit a museum or go away for a couple of days but, because they landed on a Tuesday this year, we all had to work our socks off as usual getting The News together and then an early night before getting up this morning at stupid o’clock to deliver them. Still, we’re going to have a nice steak dinner at home, complete with nicely dressed table with candles on Friday instead. All together now.... ahhh! This is the last edition of The News before the New Year. There are three reasons for this. The first is that the printers don’t print on either Christmas or New Year’s Day. The second is that the delivery people who get it from the printers and bring it to Malaga don’t work on those days and, lastly, even I need a day off sometimes! The next edition will be with you on THURSDAY 2nd January.

A bit of news for all of our readers that live in the Coin area. The La Trocha petrol station has new staff and this lot actually SMILE!! And, if you fill in their little form, you get 4 cents a litre off the cost of your petrol or diesel making it the cheapest on the coast. I used to avoid the place because the staff were so flippin’ miserable so, let’s hope this new lot of staff keep up the lovely polite, smiley service I got today! We’re now starting to get ready for Christmas. The turkey’s ordered, I’ve sorted out the rest of the menu (including a vegetarian option) and I should have time to pop and get some pressie shopping done so I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Thank you to all our advertisers and readers for giving us such wonderful feedback – it’s great to know we’ve got it right!

Prosecutor seeks jail for royalties manager The anticorruption prosecutor's office wants to jail a former manager at the country's main royalty collection society, the SGAE, who allegedly charged nearly €40,000 to a company credit card for trips to brothels. Pedro Farré was a top aide to SGAE's then-chairman, Teddy Bautista, who was arrested along with seven other SGAE members in July 2011 on charges of embezzlement.

Investigators have since found that former managers of SGAE diverted as much as €87 million between 1997 and 2011. According to the prosecution's report, Farré,

42, was hired by Teddy Bautista in April 2002 to launch a special plan to combat piracy of copyrighted material, and was given a credit card for a corporate account.

Between November 2008 and May 2009 Farré used the card to pay for visits to escort clubs in Madrid. To conceal these personal expenses, Farré gave the accounting department "10 completely untruthful receipts" showing the word "catering" and a few handwritten notes referring to people or entities that would justify the expenses.

Canary Islands aim for the stars

A group of European space companies headed by Swiss Space Systems plans to offer "budget" trips to space tourists from the Canary Islands.

Spokesman Grégoire Loretan said it was hoped trials would begin in 2020, using technology that would give ordinary men and women an experience previously accessible only to astronauts and millionaires. "Our goal is to democratise the access to space," said Loretan.

Taking off from a base near Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, one of the largest tourist towns in the Canary Islands, the trips will be relatively low-cost because the group plans to use an Airbus 300 aircraft attached to a space shuttle. Passengers would be transported six miles above Earth, when the shuttle would detach from the plane and travel up to 60 miles farther into space before returning to Earth. The shuttle would have room for up to six people. Once trials begin, Loretan said, the company will work as fast as possible to start sending tourists into space, but admitted there were a lot of factors, like permits, over which it had no control. Ticket prices have yet to be agreed on, but the aim was to make them as cheap as possible. He said the island of Gran Canaria was chosen as a base for its growing tourism industry and its location in the Atlantic Ocean, allowing spacecraft to be launched away from populated areas.

National News Banks barred from writing off political parties’ debts

Banks will not be able to write off the political parties' debts and businesses and foundations will be barred from donating money to them, when the anti-corruption measures approved by the Cabinet last week become law.

The changes affect around 15 existing laws and address three major issues: party funding, rules for elected officials, and criminal prosecution for corruption. These and other measures were announced by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy last February, during the state of the nation debate. The ruling party wants to be seen as being tough

on corruption since many of its officials were caught up in the Gürtel case, a major bribes-for-contracts scheme. A more recent investigation into former party treasurer Luis Bárcenas has revealed secret ledgers suggesting illegal party funding, including donations by business people that went over the legal limit, and cash-filled envelopes for party leaders, including the PM himself.

Submissive housewives book attacked The Spanish branch of the Anonymous movement has released a video attacking a book which advises newly-wed women on how to be submissive to their husbands – which zoomed up the bestseller list after it was published by the Catholic Archbishopric of Granada in November. The book by married Italian author Costanza Miriano titled "Cásate y sé sumisa (Get Married and Be Submissive)" preaches a message of "loyal obedience, generosity and submission" on the part of the new wife and advises

her on how to please her husband. The book, which was a bestseller in Italy, is currently number 15 on the Amazon bestseller list here. Outraged feminists have staged public demonstrations, tearing up copies of the book, and are considering legal action to get it banned, arguing that it promotes gender violence.

The author insists the book is based on the teachings of St Paul and that a perfect wife should be submissive.

Parliament protest turns violent

"It's true, you're not yet an experienced cook or a perfect housewife," she writes. "What's the problem if he tells you so? Tell him that he is right, that it's true, that you will learn. On seeing your sweetness and your humility, your effort to change, this will also change him."

Granada's Archbishop Francisco Javier Martinez has defended the book and insists that the uproar surrounding it is "ridiculous and hypocritical" in a society that allows abortion, which he argues is a much clearer example of violence against women. Anonymous's protest features a figure wearing a Guy Fawkes mask and a message in Spanish addressed "to the church

and the government". A woman's voice says, "We don't want anyone to feel they have the right to govern our lives and bodies. Our bodies are our own and we can decide what to do with them."

The video then criticises the government for "following the orders of the church" on issues such as abortion and demands equality: "We've had enough of the church seeing us as mere objects to satisfy men, reproduce and clean."

Government to halt Tibet case Hoping to head off a diplomatic crisis, the government is planning to limit the Spanish judiciary's powers to investigate human rights crimes in other countries, Justice Ministry sources have said. The move comes after the High Court last month issued arrest warrants for five top Chinese officials, including China's former president Jiang Zemin and former prime minister Li Peng, alleging they were responsible for "genocide, crimes against humanity, torture and terrorism" in Tibet in the 1980s and 1990s.

It bases its prosecution on the doctrine of universal justice. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy fears the arrest warrants may damage SpanishChinese relations and Beijing has already issued a warning to this effect, sources said. Changes to the Organic

Act of the Judicial Power will focus on article 23, which gives Spanish courts the power to investigate human rights crimes when "the alleged offenders are in Spain or when there are victims that have connections or links that are relative to Spain," and have not been tried in other countries for the same crimes.

This clause was changed in 2009 under pressure from the Israeli government when the High Court tried to indict Israel's former defence minister, Benjamin BenEliezer, for killings that took place in Gaza seven years earlier. Rajoy fears that China could adopt retaliatory measures against Spain as it did against Norway when dissident Liu Xiaobo was given the Nobel Peace prize.

At least two dozen people were injured – 14 of them were National Police officers – when youths began smashing bottles and throwing Molotov cocktails at the police, who were behind a barricade in front of Parliament to prevent the protesters from entering the building.

The organisers insisted throughout the evening that the demonstration was a peaceful one. One spokeswoman said: “No matter how many laws this fascist government passes, the people will continue to come out on the streets.” The government is expected to pass the law early next year.

'Eurovegas' giant casino plans falls through The plan to build a giant casino complex - called Eurovegas - in Alcorcon near Madrid finally fell through last week after the Spanish government refused to meet the latest conditions put forward by its developer, the US casino operator Las Vegas Sands.

At a news conference after the government's weekly cabinet meeting last Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said: "New conditions were put forward concerning taxes and legal protection which could not be taken on board by the administrations involved."

She said the government's duty was to look after the general interests of all Spaniards. Las Vegas Sands wanted the government to insure it against future changes in policy which could damage the resort's profitability, as well as a lower tax on gambling. Las Vegas Sands had also asked for the resort to be exempted from Spanish laws on smoking. In a

statement issued later, Las Vegas Sands chief executive Sheldon Adelson said: "While the government and many others have worked diligently on this effort, we do not see a path in which the criteria needed to move forward with this large-scale development can be reached." He said developing integrated resorts in Europe had been a vision of his for years, "but there is a time and place for everything and right now our focus is on encouraging Asian countries, like Japan and Korea, to dramatically enhance their tourism offering through the development of integrated resorts there".

Lorenzo pulls video after backlash

When former motoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo agreed to show off his house in Barcelona for one of his sponsors, energy drinks company monster, he had no idea there would such an angry backlash. Just hours after it appeared on YouTube last week, Lorenzo asked monster to remove it. in the video, made just before this year’s Valencia Grand Prix, Lorenzo shows a camera crew around his 1,200 m2 mansion on a hillside with spectacular views, a cinema, an indoor swimming pool, a fully equipped gymnasium and a rooftop Jacuzzi, complete with bikini-clad models. With unemployment at a record high in Spain, the social networks buzzed with remonstrations. a spokesman for Lorenzo said: “We can’t ask for forgiveness, the video was indefensible.” The irony is that the mansion isn't even Lorenzo’s primary residence: he lives in Lugano, Switzerland. The spokesman said this type of video is commonplace in the United States, the market the film was intended for, noting that mTV’s cribs TV show is a hugely successful reality show in which the rich and famous give viewers a tour of their properties. Lorenzo, 26, makes around €14 million a year through his contract with Yamaha and sponsorship deals.

PM's US visit announced that almost 40 international banks have refused to finance the project – Adelson needed $5,000 million just to launch the first phase of the project. Madrid was selected as the location for the resort after a long battle with Barcelona, which also coveted the investment. The $30 billion project which included six casinos, 12 hotels and dozens of

shops and would have created directly and indirectly up to 250,000 jobs – something not to be sneezed at in a country with an unemployment rate of 27 per cent.

Several groups had opposed the casino complex, including the Roman Catholic Church, which argued the development would encourage prostitution and crime.

Sources at La moncloa palace, the Pm's official residence, have confirmed that mariano rajoy will meet President Barack Obama in Washington on January 13th. The visit was discussed by Washington and madrid advisors at Nelson mandela's memorial service in Johannesburg last Tuesday and confirmed by a telephone conference call between the two teams of assistants two days later. Since he took office two years ago, rajoy has been keen to have himself photographed with Obama in the White House but both men's busy schedules made it impossible until now. rajoy is due to attend a SpainTurkey Summit on January 14th and he hopes to honour both engagements.

World News Chile's Bachelet firm on reform pledges

The winner of Sunday's presidential election in Chile, Michelle Bachelet, has said she will use her clear victory to push through her reform agenda.

Ms Bachelet, the left-wing candidate for the New Majority coalition, won 62% of the vote in the second and final round against her conservative rival, Evelyn Matthei. Ms Bachelet promised to carry out a "thorough reform programme".

In her victory speech, she said she had been guided by the voice of the people, those who "with valour had set the country on its course". She said

that the economic, social and political conditions were right for change, but she also appealed to those who did not vote for her to come together to "fight for the dream of all Chileans: combating inequality".

Chile is one of the richest countries in Latin America, but tens of thousands have staged protests over the past few years to push for a wider distribution of wealth and better education. Ms

Bachelet campaigned on a promise to spend £9.2 billion on reforming education, improving health care and reducing income disparity.

She wants to increase taxes to offer free university education and reform political and economic structures dating from the 1973-1990 dictatorship of General Pinochet. Ms Bachelet already served one term as president from

2006 to 2010.

Under Chile's constitution she was banned from running for a second consecutive term, even though her popularity ratings remained high. But some of her left-wing supporters said she failed to push through many of the changes she had promised that time round, and have vowed to hold her to account this time around.

Uruguay marijuana move 'illegal' Uruguay's decision to legalise the production, sale and consumption of marijuana violates international law, the UN drugs watchdog has said.

The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) warned that the move would endanger

young people and "contribute to the earlier onset of addiction". The new law will allow registered Uruguayans over 18 to buy up to 40g of the drug a month. The government hopes it will help tackle drug cartels. INCB chief

Raymond Yans said he was "surprised" that the government in Montevideo had "knowingly decided to break the universally agreed and internationally endorsed treaty". He said that claims the law would help reduce crime relied on "rather precarious and unsubstantiated

assumptions". After a 12hour-long debate last week, senators gave the government-sponsored bill their final approval by 16 votes to 13, making Uruguay the first country in the world to legalise the production and sale of marijuana.

Hollande to shun Sochi games

Neither President Francois Hollande nor any top French official will attend the 2014 Winter olympics in russia, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius announced on French radio on Sunday, but gave no explanation. Last week German President Joachim Gauck also said he was not going to the games in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. Activists have urged leaders to boycott the event over human rights concerns, including a new russian law banning "homosexual propaganda". european Commission deputy head Viviane reding has also said she was not attending. russian President Vladimir Putin has staked his personal prestige on staging a successful olympics in an effort to showcase his country. He has said gay athletes are welcome in russia and that the new law is needed to protect minors. russia also faces security challenges as Sochi is next to its restive North Caucasus region.

Ikea toy wolf becomes protest symbol A stuffed toy wolf stocked by Swedish furniture giant Ikea has sold out in Hong kong, after it became an unlikely symbol of protest. Based on the red riding Hood fairytale wolf, the toy flew off the shelves as people queued up for it from 7 am on Monday morning. An anti-government protester is said to have thrown the toy at Hong kong's leader Cy Leung over the weekend. The wolf in question is called Lufsig in Hong kong as it is elsewhere in the world. However Ikea's website for mainland China features the toy with a Chinese name, which sounds similar to a profanity in the Cantonese dialect. Cy Leung has long been labelled "the wolf" by his opponents because his name resembles the Chinese word for wolf and they accuse him of being cunning. Meanwhile Ikea says that new stock of Lufsig is expected in early January 2014. While the delay in restocking may not come as bad news for Mr Leung, an education fund for unicef and Save the Children receives $10HkD (£0.78) for every soft toy sold in Ikea.

Turkey

EU agreement on deporting migrants

Turkey and the eu have signed a deal enabling eu countries to send back illegal migrants who enter the 28-nation bloc via Turkey. The deal also establishes a roadmap for lifting visa requirements for Turks travelling to the eu. Visa-free status is expected in three years' time. Turkey is a major transit country for Asians and Africans heading for the eu.

Neighbouring Greece, where migrant reception centres are overcrowded, stepped up security on its land border with Turkey in August 2012. But the eu border agency Frontex detections of illegal migrants on boats in the Aegean Sea, between Turkey and Greece, increased by 912% later that year. In the past, human rights organisations, including the uN refugee agency uNHCr, have strongly criticised Greece and Italy for "push-backs" – a policy of sending migrants back to their point of departure. under international law, groups of migrants are supposed to be checked for legitimate asylum claims.

INDIA

Prayers for Delhi gang rape victim

Women's groups, musicians and theatre groups held vigils across the capital Delhi on Monday in memory of a student who died after she was gang-raped a year ago. A small vigil was also held at the bus stand where she boarded the vehicle on which she was attacked. The rape shocked Indians and prompted protests across the country.

Although India has tightened its anti-rape laws and society is more openly discussing cases of violence against women, women across India still live with the daily fear of sexual assault and victims still often have to deal with police apathy. Four of the six men who attacked the 23-year-old medical student were given the death penalty in September. A fifth adult suspect was found dead in his prison cell earlier this year before he could be tried. The sixth member of the group, a juvenile at the time of the crime, is serving a three-year sentence.

Snowden amnesty not being considered National Security Agency Director General Keith Alexander denied on Monday that the NSA is considering offering an amnesty to fugitive intelligence contractor Edward Snowden if he agrees to stop leaking secret documents. He was speaking after the man in charge of assessing the leaks' damage, Richard Ledgett, told CBS TV that an amnesty deal was possible.

However, General Alexander, who is retiring early next year, rejected the idea of any amnesty for Mr Snowden. "This is analogous to a hostage taker taking 50 people hostage, shooting 10, and then saying, 'If you give me full amnesty, I'll let the other 40 go'. What do you

do?" Disclosures by the former intelligence worker have revealed the extent of the NSA's spying activity.

In an earlier interview with the Reuters news agency, Mr Ledgett said he was deeply worried about highly classified documents not yet public that are among the 1.7 million Mr Snowden is believed to have accessed. Earlier this month, a UK newspaper editor told UK MPs only one per cent of the files leaked by Snowden had been published. The state department said its position has not changed and that Mr

Edward Snowden

Record Syria aid appeal launched The United Nations has announced its biggest ever appeal – £4 billion – for humanitarian aid to Syria. The UN estimates nearly three-quarters of Syria's 22.4 million population will need humanitarian aid in 2014.

The appeal coincides with a new study by the International Rescue Committee, which warns that starvation is now threatening the Syrian population. Bread prices

have risen by 500% in some areas, according to the report. Four out of five Syrians said their greatest worry was that food would run out, the survey found. "We're facing a terrifying situation here where, by the end of 2014, substantially more of the population of Syria could be displaced or in need of humanitarian help than not," said UN High Commissioner for

Refugees Antonio Guterres. UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos described the Syrian situation as "one of the biggest crises in modern times".

The UN estimates that some 6.3 million people have been internally displaced since the conflict broke out in March 2011, and more than two million Syrians have fled to neighbouring countries.

Minister sorry for child hunger remarks Canada's industry minister has apologised for suggesting it was not the Canadian government's job to feed hungry children. James Moore told a Vancouver radio programme, "Is it my job to feed my neighbour's child? I don't think so." Mr Moore initially said

the remarks had been taken out of context, but he apologised on Monday after the broadcaster posted the full audio clip, following pressure from child advocates and opposition politicians. His remarks came after a reporter asked how Canada's government planned to reduce high

British hospitals are Children pick up to be transformed swearing on TV at weekends The British Government has now taken action and hospitals will face sanctions unless they deliver the same standard of care seven days a week and cut the increased risk of death at weekends. The medical director of the National Health Service, Sir Bruce Keogh, has set out a number of radical changes which will change completely how hospitals work, removing

the traditional reliance on junior doctors at weekends when hospitals can be under the greatest pressure. He told the Sunday Times that hospitals will be contracted to run a full service at weekends to ensure that patients are properly diagnosed and treated quickly, spending less time in hospital as a result. The move follows a

report indicating an increased risk of mortality at weekends and the changes are expected to cost around £1 billion to implement. A clause in contracts which says consultants cannot be forced to work weekends could be removed and X-rays and scans will be carried out at weekends as required following the review.

New Heathrow runway after the election? New runways at Heathrow and Gatwick are among the options that have been short-listed by the Airports Commission for expanding UK airport capacity. The three short-listed options include adding a third runway at Heathrow, lengthening an existing runway at Heathrow, and building a new runway at Gatwick. The commission, led by

businessman Sir Howard Davies, has not entirely written off the creation of a new airport in the Isle of Grain in north Kent. London mayor Boris Johnson supports this option. The commission has not shortlisted proposals for expanding Stansted or Birmingham, but said there was likely to be a case for considering them as "potential options"

A senior headmaster in Britain has suggested that bad language in television programmes is to blame for the high level of swearing in classrooms and school playgrounds and children repeat it without realising it is offensive. Ray McGovern believes this could blight their futures and that the

television and film industry has a responsibility to control on screen language, particularly if children could be listening. He suggested some comedians were particularly to blame and that swearing was now found on a number of family shows.

UK surgeon dies

British orthopaedic surgeon Dr Abbas Khan, 32, who travelled to the city of Aleppo in Syria to help civilians and work as an emergency doctor has died in detention. Dr Khan from Streatham in south west London, was arrested and imprisoned by Assad forces within 48 hours of his arrival. According to the Syrian security agency Dr Khan who had worked at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, was due to be released this week and his brother, Afroze, said: "My brother knew that. He was ready to come back home. He was happy and looking forward to being released. We are devastated, distraught and we are angry at the Foreign Office for dragging their feet for 13 months." The Foreign Office said: "We are extremely concerned by reports that a British national has died in detention in Syria. We are urgently seeking clarification of this from the Syrian authorities." The family have said they have no information about how Dr Khan had died at time of going to Press.

New evidence in cold case

Nicola Payne was 18 at the time she disappeared from Coventry 22 years ago, on 14th December 1991. Now police investigating the case have arrested two men, both aged 49, on suspicion of her abduction and murder and a 51-year-old woman on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Miss Payne, who had a sevenmonth-old son at the time, disappeared from the Henley Green area of the City and police have said that new forensic tests in the field of DNA and palynology (the study of pollen) are being carried out but declined to say the nature of the items being examined. The arrests come just days after police appealed for further information on the cold case. No-one had ever been arrested in connection with her disappearance before. Her family have been informed of the new developments.

Bid to clamp Lording it over the public down on welfare state Britain is a relatively small island and many issues are connected with population density and the provision of affordable welfare. And now it has been suggested by a Member of Parliament that families should only be able to claim benefits for two children – a move aimed at cutting billions of pounds from the welfare bill. Nadhim Zahawi, a Conservative, would limit tax credits to a family’s first two children under the plan and he believed this would help the next generation think more

carefully. If implemented after the general election in 2015, it would apply to those who had a third child after this. Mr Zahawi, a member of the Prime Minister’s policy board, said the welfare state was established as a last resort not a lifestyle choice that trapped people into dependency on the state. A family of three could be almost £700 worse off under the plan, which is not Government policy and is not supported by Prime Minister David Cameron. written by Vic Gardner

Bombers back in Belfast After many years of relative peace in the area, it would seem that the bombers are back in Belfast.

In a busy shop, the Golf Madness Store in Cornmarket, Belfast City centre at about 6:40pm on Monday night a man thought to be in his mid40s, who was seen to be moving something underneath his jacket moments before, burst into flames. It is believed the intention was to be another fire bomber for the city to contend with but he ran out of the shop toward Ann Street with his head and shoulder engulfed in flames slapping at the fire to put himself out as he went. Fire and incendiary devices were frequently used as a means of terrorising the inhabitants of the area during the Troubles although it hasn’t been used again until now and comes in the wake of two other small bomb explosions within the past month.

Chief Supt Alan McCrum said the suspected fire bomber, who may need hospital treatment, was spotted by staff and approached after they thought he looked

suspicious. He was described as “plump and about 6ft tall”. The shop owner, Nick Pierpoint, described the incident as "sickening". The other two recent incidents were, firstly on Sunday 24th November, when a car bomb partially exploded outside Victoria Square shopping centre and on Friday 13th December when a small bomb exploded in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter as police were evacuating the area. Dissident republicans have been blamed for both incidents and no-one was hurt in the explosions. Belfast City Centre manager Andrew Irvine said the attacks were "absolutely reprehensible". However, he pointed out that traders were determined not to let them destroy their business. He appealed for any businesses that have CCTV to check it and check their stores throughout the day and at the end of the day.

Glyn Roberts, chief executive of the Northern Ireland Retail Trade Association, said: "There is absolute utter disgust that yet again Belfast city centre is in the headlines for the wrong reasons. I

Although there is no suggestion that anyone has broken any laws or rules, a survey carried out by the Daily Mirror was told by the former head of Essex County Council that half of the members of the UK House of Lords attend for just a few minutes a day to enable them to claim their £300 daily attendance allowance. He claimed that he himself spent around half the £300 daily allowance he claimed on expenses and so did not really make a profit saying that he was a full-time peer who needed the money to buy food and pay his electricity bills etc. He joined the Lords in 1998. Former Conservative peer Lord Hanningfield made the claim when he was asked by the newspaper to explain his own attendance record that showed 11 out of 19 days in July this year, for which he claimed £5,700. He had spent less than 40 minutes inside the House, did not speak in any

think a message needs to go out to the people who plant these bombs – you simply will not win, you're not going to ruin our town centre and you're not going to ruin Christmas."

Alban Maginness from the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) said: "It beggars belief that following the placing of a bomb in the Cathedral Quarter on Friday night that Belfast would be faced with yet another attempted act of wanton destruction. To place an incendiary device in a busy shopping area is both reckless and irresponsible and serves no rational purpose. Those behind this incendiary device are antiBelfast and just want to threaten jobs, livelihoods and people's enjoyment of our city. They must not be permitted to prevail," he added.

Anna Lo from the Alliance party said: "I am sickened that yet again lives have been put at risk by the mindless actions of these callous and evil individuals. There is no place in our society for those who wish to bring death, injury and destruction to our streets."

"Being a lord is not just going in the House of Lords," he said. "Lots of peers go in and check in for their expenses, but they are using their expenses for a lot of things – entertaining, meeting people, employing people." Since October Lord Hanningfield has spoken twice and submitted four written questions. So, if he had claimed for 19 days a month, 12 months a year for the 15 years since he became an MP he would have received just over £1 million from the public purse. Nice work if you can get it!

Seville family deaths may be due to toxic infection The preliminary findings of autopsies carried out on three members of the same family from Seville who died of suspected food poisoning at the weekend found that the cause of death was cardiorespiratory failure, and not the result of eating food food past its due date scavenged from garbage bins.

The exact cause has yet to be identified but it would seem that a toxic infection was a potential trigger, given that the youngest family member – a girl aged 13 – did not display the same symptoms as Enrique Caño, 61, his wife Concepción Bautista, 50, or their eldest daughter, aged 14. The rest of the family had eaten fish for dinner, but the 13-yearold, who has been moved from intensive care to a ward, did not.

First reports said the family had no income and were eating food they found in the garbage, It later transpired that the father was receiving unemployment benefits and that the family supplemented its income by collecting cardboard which they sold to a recycling factory. Seville municipal sources said the couple had electricity and running water in their home and had not asked the municipality for special assistance. Last Saturday night, the emergency services received a call from the family home reporting symptoms of nausea and diarrhea. An ambulance went to their home in Alcalá de Guadaíra, Seville province, at 2.55am, and followed standard protocol in such cases, the regional health authority said.

At 9.55am on Sunday morning, the emergency services received another call reporting a serious escalation of the family’s symptoms. Another emergency team was sent, which found the parents in a serious condition and their 14-year-old daughter already dead. Caño and Bautista died a few hours later in hospital. Members of the victims’ extended family said they had not ruled out taking action against the authorities for the emergency services’

handling of the situation.

Pictured above is the apartment block where the family lived

The results of tests to determine the cause of the fatalities are not expected to be available for some weeks, sources close to the investigation said. In the meantime, all possibilities are being explored. The initial findings have been handed to the courts, which have decreed judicial secrecy on the case. The bodies of the three victims have been released for burial.

The Iberian lynx faces new threat The Iberian lynx, the most endangered feline in the world, must eat at least one rabbit a day to survive, and it is currently running out of its main source of food as a new strain of the rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) decimates its prey in the natural park of Sierra de Andújar, a major lynx preserve located in the mountainous province

of Jaén. This area already had a low rabbit density but it is also home to a significant number of fertile lynx females – 53 were counted last year.

In the Doñana national park, the feline's other major habitat, there are only 25 females but more rabbits. Without a full belly the lynx will not reproduce, and species

recovery plans such as the Life Iberlince programme could suffer. Ramón Pérez de Ayala, a World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) participant in Life Iberlince said: "We fear that the work of the last 10 years will go to pieces."

The Life programmes, which are co-financed by the European Union, have managed to triple the Iberian lynx population in the last decade. In 2012, 305 were counted. Last year, 44 newborn cubs pulled through. This year's figures will not be official until the end of the month, but unofficial sources said there are no more than 10 cubs. If a lynx does not find rabbits in its regular habitat, it will travel in search of them, exposing

itself to the danger of being hit by a car – 33 per cent of lynxes end up as road kill. So far this year, 13 have been run over by vehicles.

The Junta de Andalucia is fast bringing back the fencing that was built in 2002 to repopulate the area with rabbits and ensure food is not affected. The real effects of the shortage will not be felt until March 2014, when the breeding season begins. But the signs are not good. The Junta's environment department has been monitoring the rabbit populations for several months now and has confirmed a significant drop in density.

Unexpected allies for Gibraltar The Spanish trade unions, the UGT and the Workers Commissions (CC.OO), have joined a consortium called the Frontier Crossings Group that intends to ask the EU to tell Spain to stop the border controls, according to the online newspaper El Confidencial Digital (ECD). The consortium's objective is to "raise its voice against the huge

delays at the frontier and the restriction of the right to free circulation of the citizens of two EU countries, Spain and Gibraltar".

The group also intends to organise protests against the inspection of vehicles on the Spanish side of the border. If their protests do not achieve the desired objectives, the

Group, together with Gib's Chamber of Commerce, government and the two unions, will take the matter to Brussels because the controls "contravene universal human rights". It is not the first time the two Spanish unions have collaborated with Gibraltar. Last summer, when the border crisis was

at its height, they signed a manifesto with the Gibraltar union, UNITE, criticising the Spanish government's attitude. Both unions say the Spanish towns in the Campo de Gibraltar "have benefited from the Rock's strength" and accuse the Spanish government of "mutilating the regional economy".

Investigation quashed The Provincial Court of Seville has quashed an investigation order against two former Junta de Andalucia Socialist premiers, on the grounds that the investigating judge, Mercedes Alaya, failed to explain exactly what they are being accused of in the huge embezzlement case.

Referring to Manuel Chaves, premier from 1990 and 2009, and his successor José Antonio Griñán, who stepped down

in September of this year – before the end of his mandate – the provincial court ruled that "the writ does not even summarily explain what specific facts might constitute a crime each of the aforados (person with parliamentary immunity who can only be tried by a Supreme Court) may have committed". Judge Mercedes Alaya is investigating 20 current and former officials of the Junta de Andalucia for

their alleged involvement in the irregular way in which a public fund – the so-called ERE – set up to help struggling businesses was being shared out among companies and individuals who were not eligible for the aid.

Guilty yearnings

I

feel guilty when I find myself yearning for the way Spain used to be – when it was very different from the rest of Europe. I first arrived here in June 1964, with the handsome young Spaniard I was going to marry. "The Sixties" had already taken off in Britain and everything was bubbling. We weren't much richer then but we were trendy, and that was the most important thing.

S

pain was still a couple of centuries behind. We arrived by boat to Vigo and got on his old Bultaco 125cc bike and headed for Madrid. It was June 2nd and bitterly cold – but that's Galicia for you. Then it started to rain and we looked like drowned rats when we stopped at a modest little restaurant in Orense, as it was called in those days, now spelt Ourense. No sooner had we sat down than a large lady emerged from the kitchen and insisted on taking our clothes "to dry them while you eat". We were given dry overalls and two hours later we emerged, still a little damp but with comfortingly full bellies. That lady probably saved us both from death by pneumonia.

O

ver the next six years, I was to experience similar acts of kindness in Huelva, Cadiz and Madrid – acts of kindness that would be rare in the UK, where most people were suspicious of strangers. I left Spain in June 1970 and last visited with a Venezuelan married couple in June 1977, just before the first free post-Franco elections, before I disappeared into Venezuela for the next 25 years. We visited Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla and Madrid. We visited the Alhambra – no queues, no crowds of tourists – and wandered for hours through that dreamlike palace. In Sevilla, we savoured the Barrio Santa Cruz, the old Jewish ghetto, the Alcazar and hardly a tourist in sight. I retraced my steps in Granada and Sevilla after I came back in October 2002 and I swear I will never go back to those two cities, once so beautiful, now overwhelmed by the tourist hordes. For the life of me I daren't go back to Cadiz or Madrid. But it was the people, who captivated me then. I must confess that now I see little difference between the Spaniards and the rest of us, although the Spaniards are still kinder than most. The I came across an article in the New York Times last week, titled "When we were poor before", written by novelist Almudena Grandes Hernandez in which she remembers Spain as it was. She remembers maids on cold winter mornings when she was a child in Madrid, who were always running, "their arms crossed over their chests to try to stay warm inside their thin wool jackets". And the "dark-skinned men walking slowly, carrying cardboard suitcases". She admired their resilience, and "wondered whether they, too, were cold. But I kept my questions to myself.”

www.thenewsonline.es

I

quote: "In the 1960s, curiosity was a dangerous vice for Spanish children. We were surrounded by photographs of young smiling people we’d never met. They were uncles, cousins, siblings, grandparents or family friends, and they were dead. And how did they die? A long time ago. But how, why, what happened? During the war or after the war, but it’s a story so sad, so terrible, we children were told, it’s better not to talk about unpleasant subjects."

T

he war was the mysterious conflict nobody dared speak of, and mentioning it ended the conversation. Even today, she wrote, Spaniards don’t want to remember.

I

quote: "We lived in a poor country, but we were used to that. We’d always been poor, even when the kings of Spain were the masters of the world, when the gold of the Americas travelled across the peninsula, leaving behind nothing more than the dust raised by the wagons that transported it to Flanders, to pay the Crown’s debts. In the Madrid of my childhood, poverty was our shared destiny, the only heirloom many parents could bequeath their children. But there was something else in that legacy, something of value we Spaniards have lost!

S

he says no matter how hard she tries, she can't recall any sadness. "Anger, yes, of some men and women who in one life had suffered enough misfortune for six people, but nonetheless kept going. Thirty years ago, in Spain, children inherited from their parents poverty, but also dignity, a way of being poor that was never undignified ... Later they told us we had to forget, that to build a democracy it was essential to look forward, to pretend nothing had happened. And by forgetting the bad, we also erased the good. That didn’t seem to matter because all of a sudden, we were attractive, we were modern, we were fashionable. Why remember the war, the hunger, the misery and the hundreds of thousands of dead people? By turning our backs on the maids with the thin coats, we lost touch with our tradition, with the values that now could help us overcome this new poverty...Today, Spaniards are not just broke; we are lost, stunned and confused, as disoriented as a spoiled child whose toys have been taken away... If our grandparents saw us, they would die laughing, then die of shame. For them, our economic slide would be a mere inconvenience, not a crisis. Because Spaniards, who for centuries knew how to be poor with dignity, never knew how to be docile.

N

ever. Until now."

Wish list

Writes for the English language version of

W

ith the New Year just around the corner, Spain hopes to start out with a fresh outlook. The Partido Popular government is confident that the economy will continue on its positive cycle while at the same time the country's exports will help beef up Spain's revenue. Unfortunately, high unemployment and corruption won't fade away and some of the goals that the Spanish government had hoped to accomplish this year – capturing the 2020 Olympic Games and hammering out a final agreement for EuroVegas – will continue to haunt the PP administration for some time to come.

I

t is hoped that the troika will continue to give us positive grades from our painful reforms, and that Brussels begins its own reforms aimed a stronger banking union without hesitating and stopping at too many high hurdles. As for the PP, we can only hope it listens to the Council of Europe and doesn't go through with its antiprotest measures, better known as the Citizens Security Law, which call for high fines for people who take part in demonstrations where socalled offences against Spain call for criminal action. The Council of Europe's human rights commissioner has called the law arbitrary and said it will curtail people's rights to freedom of assembly and right to protest.

B

ut that isn't the only proposed law that will be closely watched. A new party financing bill, which would make it illegal for big businesses and companies to give contributions to the political parties, has already met resistance by members of the Partido Popular itself, which is proposing the bill. Even though the proposed law doesn't have many teeth and still allows individuals to make donations of up to €1,000, it is a start to party financing reform. In Italy, the government has recently announced that it will ban public financing of

the nation’s countless parties. This could also be a measure that would work out well in Spain, or at least curtail the amount they receive.

A

nd then comes the question of corruption. It is to be hoped that many of the ongoing high profile cases will be resolved before the year’s end, including the long running Gurtel kickback scheme, the inquiry into Barcenas' ledgers, the mismanagement at Caja Madrid, and the case regarding the alleged diversion of funds by royal son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin. Unfortunately, these investigations will continue throughout next year with more frightening allegations expected to surface. Then, of course, there is the more important matter of improving the lives of Spaniards. True, consumer spending appears to be up this holiday season, but there are many Spaniards who won't be spending Christmas the way they once used to enjoy it. Many people are still living in the streets, evicted from their homes, and they will be counting on charitable kitchens for their meals. The PP government throughout the years has taken away many instruments that traditionally gave Spaniards a cushion in times of crisis. It is only fair to say that it might not replace any of these benefits in the coming year.

T

he welfare state will only be reinforced when the Socialists come back, and it is not clear when that will take place. Everyone has their wishes for this holiday season, but people in Spain seem to be more hopeful than others when it comes to a positive outlook for society. But not much can be expected from the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who will continue his direct course on keeping the party, big business and Brussels happy.

PETS OF THE WEEK

Fancy a dip for New Year’s Day? That totally barking lot from animal charity PAD are at it again.

Following their popular Christmas tradition, the President Lisa and some of her crew will be “taking to the water” (yes, that’s right – they’re going for a swim) on New Year’s Day to raise much needed funds and what they really need is for lots of you lovely Costa del Sol people to join them and raise sponsorship money! Lisa says: “Blow away the cobwebs and start the New Year on a positive note, afterwards warm up with a hot toddy and join us for a drink or two to welcome the New Year!”

They – and you, of course – will be entering the sea down by the Gun Pub on the Paseo Maritimo, Fuengirola towards the castle end of town.

If you don’t fancy getting wet, they certainly deserve the rest of us to go down, watch the fun and give them some money for their efforts!

Harvey & Lucy

Meet Harvey who came from the perrera.

We do not know a lot about his personality as he has just arrived, so all we can say at the moment is that he is another cutie of approximately two months old.

Fama’s policy is never to have a dog put down, they have a home with us for life or until adopted. See their website: www.famaspain.com

This is Lucy another newcomer to FAMA. She seems to be a very healthy, beautiful young girl, about a year old. She weighs approx 8 kilos. Her height from shoulder to floor is approx 28 cms. She also came from the perrera, has no problems with other dogs and shows no aggression. If you would like to meet Lucy or Harvey in person call Pat on 620 354 885.

Lion’s share for charities

Every year the La Cala Lions seem to raise more and more money for various local charities and this year has been no exception with their Christmas Party Dinner and Dance for family and friends raising nearly €1000 to be donated to children's charities. This was due to another fabulous raffle. Social Secretary Jim Sutton and his busy team – Wynson Beswick and Christine Moore – seem to find the very best of prizes for the events.

During the past six months the La Cala Lions have donated over €30,000.00 to those in need.

The photo shows the donation of a cheque to ADIMI the charity which cares for mentally and physically handicapped children from birth and includes physiotherapy, tuition and mental health programmes. Encina Laura, another local charity also benefitted with funds for a new kiln after theirs was destroyed in a fire recently. Donations were also given to Positively Pink, the breast cancer charity and

to a Uganda programme which helps desperately poor children, many needing help when amputations and disease leave them unable to walk.

Other beneficiaries recently include Malaga Orphanage, A.R.C.H. Rescue Centre for Horses, Ponies and Donkeys. Debra – the Butterfly Children – have been supplied with funds to pay for the services of two nurses for a year who will be available for home visits to help care for these children who need special medications and dressings. La Cala Lions would like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported them this year including their volunteers who run their charity shops and the local media for helping to keep them in the public eye. They wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a great New Year. Next year they have another busy programme of events so keep checking their shop in La Cala for information.

clamp down Mayor of Mijas, Ángel Nozal issued a stern warning to all potential seasonal drink-drivers last week.

During an interview with Mijas 340's TV and radio presenter Gabriella Rey the mayor made it very clear anyone found driving “under the influence”, would be prosecuted without mercy.

He went on to warn drivers that especially on New Years Eve, local police will conduct a “razzia” of extensive road side checks in an anti-alcohol campaign stretching throughout the entire municipality of Mijas. written by Pete Woodall

Beware, thieves A house in the campo in Alhaurin el Grande was broken into over the weekend. Thieves cut through the fence and smashed in the front door. Christmas presents, their laptop, cash, and TV etc., were all stolen which in itself is very upsetting but, the really nasty part of this break-in was that the perpetrators beat up the owner’s two Staffordshire Bull Terriers while they were at it. beautiful trees...

On December 7th 500 people gathered at Arboretum Marbella in beautiful sunshine to plant trees for this local environmental charity which is creating a people’s forest just behind Marbella’s bus station. This was the start of the 2013-2014 season and the aim was to get 100 people to plant over 1,000 native trees and shrubs in just one day. Due to the huge interest they were able to exceed their target by bringing together 500 people to plant more than 4,000 trees. As well as planting there was music, activities for the kids, a puppet show and a workshop and everyone went home with a seed to plant for next year. Founder of Arboretum Marbella Alejandro Orioli commented “This event offers the opportunity to plant a tree in this public park and help to conserve our native species and support our initiative to

Museum of Glass and Crystal in Malaga

M OV I E S A N D DV D R E L E A S E S 2013

For some time we have wanted to visit the above and with the glorious weather we were having decided to combine the visit with seeing the Christmas lights in Malaga. Written by Roving reporter Antonia Hagelen-McIntosh We were expecting a museum on the history of making glass but were totally unaware of what awaited us.

The museum is in the historical centre of one of the old quarters of the city, opposite the baroque church of San Felipe Neri built in 1761. Due to the narrow streets in the area it is not recommended that you try and park close by – the best way is to go is on foot along the beautiful Calle Larios, now elegantly decorated with Christmas lights.

We entered and met our guide, none other than the actual owner Sr. Gonzalo Fernández-Prieto, who began by explaining how, with tremendous dedication, he had carefully and lovingly restored the 18th century house. He told us how we would be browsing through the history of humanity by means of “glass”. With over 3,000 pieces, a mere third of his total private collection, he would be taking us through different periods of time and cultures – all housed throughout 11 rooms around three patios. His English is impeccable and we were immediately struck by his passion and incredible knowledge of what we were about to discover. (He was only nine years old when he began collecting!) The ground floor had numerous stained glass windows which he had

acquired, mainly from England and Scotland – some in terrible condition – but had been able to find craftsmen in Spain who were able to restore them to their full glory, a very expensive process. To see the details of faces and colours so close up was a revelation. A special touch at this time of the year was his personal display of the most beautiful Nativity scene with all the characters in Lladro porcelain – not your norm!. We proceeded through each of the rooms and each one was a marvel – the glass and crystals were beautifully displayed and lit in rooms exquisitely decorated with works of art, furnishings and other objects of decoration corresponding to each historical period. The chandeliers were to die for! In each room he would pick up a piece of particular interest, let us hold it to share and feel his enthusiasm. And he absolutely delighted us with family anecdotes and secrets.

There are pieces as far back as the sixth century, English crystals and cameos, Spanish “La Granja” from the XVIII century, Austrian, Bohemian, and French, pre Raphalite and on and on – pieces so exquisite, showing techniques from the past, many lost,

unknown forgotten.

or

sadly

Visits last an hour but we were so totally mesmerised that we spent nearly two hours and have only been able to give you a flavour of what awaits you. It’s an absolute MUST.

The entrance fee is only €5 (€3 for OAP’s and children from 7 to12). All visits are guided in English, Spanish, French or Italian. Closed on Tuesdays, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day and the whole of August. Visiting times are from 11.00 to 19.00 with the final guided tour at 18.15. The address is Plaza Santisimo Cristo de la Sangre 2 (head for Calle Gaona). Tel. No.952 220 271. They have a website www.museovidrioycristal malaga.com

The museum has a ramp and a lift – a walking frame or wheelchair can be requested in advance and modified toilet facilities for those who may need them.

They also hold conferences and musical events, supply them with your email address and they will advise you. My next visit is to ask him how he cleans all the sparkling glass!

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

twelve Years a slave Directed by Steve McQueen Starring: Chiwetal Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch

Critics are in awe of McQueen’s epic historical drama, which is now one of the front runners for glory at the Golden Globes, and will definitely be in the running for multiple Oscar nominations.

It’s based on the memoirs of Solomon Northrup (a searing performance from English actor Ejiofor), a New York state-born free negro, who was drugged and kidnapped in Washington DC in 1841 and sold into slavery. He worked on plantations in Louisiana for 12 years before his release and return to his family, and was first bought by the benign plantation owner William Ford (Cumberbatch), who was forced to sell him on to the brutal Edwin Epps (Fassbender).

It’s a tale of Solomon’s hopes, his fears and his determination never to give up – and cinema

audiences are barely able to breathe as they live through the epic journey with him.

Research has revealed that the story is not only true, but the account on the silver screen protects us from the very worst brutalities inflicted on the lives of Solomon and the other plantation workers.

It’s gruelling and life affirming and has earned seven Golden Globe nominations, including best actor, best director, best drama and best supporting actor for Fassbender. A must-see for quality acting and drama based on real events.

Watch that tongue, for you are slightly fiery and a little bit sensitive. There could be unsettling emotions that you have held within for a while that are bubbling away. If this situation is causing you so much stress then you need to deal with the cause and sort things out even if you feel a bit vulnerable. Get beyond petty differences and let others know what your expectations or bottom lines are. Trust your instincts and you will sail into Christmas week a lot clearer. Be fully present in the now and immerse yourself in the events that are taking place – this is the advice for these two weeks. You will be surprised at how much you will enjoy doing things that you do not usually do and how much your relationships improve. Watch your health, do not over indulge and make sure you are getting enough sleep, exercise and healthy food, keep things simple.

Family dynamics that are unresolved could rock your boat a little; so stay alert and keep an open mind, an honest dialogue going and be ready to make changes if necessary, be adaptable. On the other hand this festive period also offers an adventure of experience, a chance to deepen bonds. New opportunities can appear from nowhere, along with a promotion and unexpected but uplifting events. It can feel slightly frustrating as all the things you want and need are so close by and yet they seem so far away at the same time. Patience is the key here. Reconnecting with others and meeting them where they are at is a talent that will benefit you over this period. Ask for support and help if you need it as there are many that would be willing to lighten your load. The end of 2013 is for you to work on what you want more of and less of what you don’t. It is all about to come rushing out as you feel so strongly about something you will certainly not be holding back. The power of your words has enough honesty and force behind them to instigate the changes you so long for. Conversations may have an air of unpredictability about them and certainly not what you will be expecting. Keep flexible when it comes to travel plans as you may have to reprioritise at the last minute. Out with the old and in with the new is your Christmas motto that will run into the New Year nicely. If anything in your life feels stagnant or outmoded, it is destined to morph and change. There may be an element of risk involved but with a practical and calculated edge to it. This is a passionate time for your personal relationships and those whom you love and care about, you will support and stand behind. Your actions will speak loud and clear as through this you demonstrate your love.

LIBRA

It is all about balance and yet when is it not for you Libra? Relationships are under scrutiny and it is up to you to make sure that one of you is not carrying the majority of the load; or taking the other for granted, any unspoken issues need to be brought to the table. Perhaps it is you that needs to take charge of the change? Your powers of attraction are higher than usual and you could September 23rd - be entering Christmas week having a passionate time. If there appears to be an insurmountable obstacle in your way, then trust me, it is only appearing large, it is in fact miniscule. The challenges are not as hard as you may think they are once you start to tackle them and at the same time you will discover talents and abilities you did not know you had. Romance is strong for you over this period and you will be looking forward to sharing a relaxing time with a loved one.

Responsibilities and duty could be calling – perhaps it is time to be proactive in this area. The key for you is to not take yourself or these responsibilities too seriously and remember to have fun whilst adhering to the things that need to be done. Your creativity is super-charged, your dreams are probably vivid; this can be an inspirational period for you. Keep the home fires burning as you roll from duty to desire with ease. After a relationship upheaval there is going to be a time of stability and this feeling of support may make you quite tearful. It is as if everything you have been emotionally suppressing lately finally shows itself now the pressure is off. Relationships deepen and improve dramatically and you will feel instinctively inside the route to take. Home and family play a great part in your life right now.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

There's nothing more Christmassy than a gingerbread house – and it's not too hard to make one yourself. There are no rules when it comes to gingerbread houses and the kids can make it as colourful, fun and glittery as they like.

Gingerbread Log Cabin Ingredients: • 200g (8oz) flour • 10ml (2tsp) ground ginger • 5ml (1tsp) mixed spice • 100g (4oz) soft brown sugar • 100g (4oz) butter • 30ml (2tbsp) milk • 60ml (4tbsp) black treacle

• A mixture of red and white sweets

• Icing sugar • Gingerbread house cutter set or a knife

or golden syrup For the gingerbread log cabin: • 4 x gingerbread wall panels • 2 x roof panels • Icing tube - white

Directions 1. Place flour and spices in a bowl and make a well in the middle. 2. Heat remaining ingredients in a saucepan gently until butter has melted. 3. Cool mixture a little (2 mins) before adding to dry ingredients. 4. Mix with a wooden spoon until a soft ball is formed. 5. Once cool, roll out on a floured work surface to a thickness of 0.5cm (1/4") 6. Bake at 180*C (350*F) for 1015mins. 7. Cool for 3 mins before transferring to a wire rack. Gingerbread log cabin 1. Make, roll, cut and bake your gingerbread panels. You might wish to cut windows and a door if you are using the cutter set. 2. Take one

of the wall panels and pipe on a line of icing where the adjacent panel will join. Press the second panel in place and use mugs or tins to support them whilst the icing sets. Repeat with remaining wall panels, then leave to set for 20 minutes. 3. Remove the supports, then add the roof panels in the same manner. 4. Use the icing to glue on sweets for the ridge tiles, windowsills and log ends, and to add decorative details such as window and door frames. 5. Finally, dredge with icing sugar and decorate the scene with sugar snow, gingerbread men and trees if desired. Nutritional Information 70g fat, 20g saturated Fat, 90g sugar, 6g salt.

ink Spotify goes free Geek on iOS and Android mobile devices

Spotify has announced that the full desktop streaming experience will now be available to tablet users on both iOS and Android platforms without a subscription. Taking note of sliding desktops sales, the Swedish company has elected to give mobile users full access to the 20 million songs the service currently hosts.

Do not accept the popular consensus of what is happening, or the first excuse another makes, if it sits uneasy with you. Seek to find the truth and then to plan for the future particularly within the financial and material areas. A career prospect is looking good, so don’t let that voice of doubt drag you down, or stop your vision. Trust in the fact that not only will you land on your feet you will do so running.

“Today we’re giving people the best free music experience in the history of the smartphone and the tablet,” said Daniel Ek, Spotify's CEO and founder.

There are some things that are becoming so clear as your eyes are now wide open. This is a good space for you to be in and you know that it is safe to trust not only in your gut feeling but in the truth of your heart. People can be unpredictable doing and saying things you would never dare. Even though you are a great planner and take things one step at a time, there is a strong need to remain open and adaptable to all possibilities and situations.

“Whether you're going to the gym, or having a party with friends, just sit back and let Spotify serve you great music for every moment of your life."

Mind you, you will still have to put up with adverts. If you want completely uninterrupted listening you'll have to pay up for the premium subscription. Similarly, you'll only be able to download songs and listen to them offline if you're a premium member – which will set you back £10 a month in the UK.

To make its service even more enticing, Spotify has revealed "Spotify Shuffle" – a new feature that lets you play an individual artist's back catalogue on shuffle. It's similar to the existing Spotify Radio feature, but now keeps it limited to a single artist. Similarly, you can shuffle play any of your existing playlists or other playlists that Spotify users have compiled. Finally, rounding off the announcements from the company comes the news that Led Zeppelin's entire back catalogue is now available to stream. Now you’re talking!

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

How do I get rid of the little red veins around my nose and cheeks? Lynda, Mijas Dear Lynda,

Sometimes these broken capillaries can be genetic but they are usually the result of sun damage, smoking, harsh temperatures or treating the skin roughly. Over indulgence in alcohol and

very spicy food can also make them flare up. You can get rid of them with a form of electrolysis.

Vitamin C will help the appearance of smaller threads, so stock up on that. You can use creams with horse chestnut in to help them and use a concealer to cover them.

To prevent reoccurrence treat your skin gently and use a high factor protective sun screen.

Dear Calvin,

One of my friends suggested I have my hair sliced instead of blunt cut. I don’t know the difference between the two; can you explain please. Debs, Calahonda Hi Debs,

A blunt cut is when the hair is cut straight across with each section. Clients with fine hair often find this a better way to have their hair cut as it tends to give the hair a fuller look. When you slice the hair you are in effect reducing weight and this will give the

hair a much more textured look. Dear Sue,

I have been dieting before Christmas and lost weight but my cellulite looks worse. How can I smooth out my dimply thighs? Sandie, Torremolinos Dear Sandie,

Well done on your weight loss. If this has been a rapid loss of weight it often leaves you with slack skin. Improve the situation with toning exercises and professional massage. Apply a firming cream twice daily. No cream will banish cellulite over

night but a good cream can boost overall tone and make your thighs appear more sculpted. A machine called the G5 that delivers a gyrationary movement is a truly effective salon treatment when undertaken regularly. Dear Calvin,

Is it necessary to use a weekly deep conditioning treatment? Sandra, Benalmadena Dear Sandra,

It is not always necessary but it won’t do the hair any harm. Much depends on what your hair is put

through – continual exposure to the sun and sea water and frequent use of styling with heat such as blow drying straightners and curling tongs all take their toll on the hair.

I would start off by doing a weekly treatment and then gradually lenghthen the time as the hair condition improves. Global cancer cases 007 is an reach 14 million 'impotent drunk' The number of people being diagnosed with cancer in the world each year has leaped to more than 14 million, the World Health Organization said in its report for 2012, which showed a marked rise on the 12.7 million cases in 2008. In that time the number of deaths has also increased, from 7.6 million to 8.2 million. The report said the rise is being driven by a rapid shift in lifestyles in the developing world to more closely reflect industrialised countries.

Rising rates of smoking and obesity as well as people living longer are also contributing to the rise. Lung cancer was the most common cancer globally, with 1.8 million cases – about 13% of the total.

The WHO also described a "sharp rise" in

cases of breast cancer. The disease is now the most common cancer in women in 140 countries.

A spokesman for the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer said breast cancer is also a leading cause of cancer death in the less developed countries of the world: "This is partly because a shift in lifestyles is causing an increase in incidence, and partly because clinical advances to combat the disease are not reaching women living in these regions." The WHO said there was an "urgent need" for the advances made in detection, diagnoses and treatment of breast cancer to be implemented in developing nations.

The WHO predicts the number of cancer cases will soar to more than 19 million a year by 2025.

Her Majesty's top secret agent's love of the bottle would leave him impotent and at death's door, according to doctors in Derby and Nottingham who read the 14 Bond novels in their spare time. With a notebook at hand they charted every day and every drink.

Excluding the 36 days Bond was in prison, hospital or rehab, the spy downed 1,150 units of alcohol in 88 days, which works out at 92 units a week – about five vodka martinis a day and four times the recommended maximum intake for men in the UK.

The researchers said this could have been a response to the death of his wife in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Their report published in the Christmas edition of the British Medical Journal concluded: "Although we appreciate the societal pressures to consume alcohol when working with international terrorists and high stakes gamblers, we would advise Bond to be referred for further assessment of his alcohol intake." They added: "You wouldn't want this person

defusing a nuclear bomb.

"He's a very glamorous person, he gets all the girls and that's totally incompatible with the lifestyle of an alcoholic, which he is."

They said Bond would be classified in the "top whack" of problem drinkers and would be at high risk of liver damage, an early death and impotence. "So he might be practising safe sex after all," they said.

They said the study is light-hearted, and did not interfere with their day jobs, but raises an important message about alcohol. Excessive alcohol consumption is thought to cause 2.5 million deaths every year around the world.

It’s all to play for in the Strictly final 2013 being shown on Saturday on BBC 1

One to go, two results and two deaths … but who do you want to win, and who do you think will win Strictly Come Dancing? As an avid follower of Strictly Come Dancing since it started I’m quite sure that this year has been the closest fought competition so far. Apart from a couple of duffers to start with, even though it has to be said they tried their best, the last few have been so close to being perfect even Len got a bit off his trolley last weekend. It was a shame when Deborah Meadham went out quite near the start as she was obviously not a dancer before, improved every week and loved every minute of her time there. Still it wasn’t to be and off she went. And, should Rachel Riley have gone so soon? The dance offs are always a nightmare for the contestants

and sometimes someone is voted off when they are clearly better than someone who should have had more public votes. Nevertheless, it all adds to the fun! So, who is in the final? There’s Brendan Cole and his partner, singer Sophie Ellis Bextor, Aljaž Skorjanec and his partner Abbey Clancey, Grimsby born professional Kevin Clifton and partner Suzanne Reid (who seems to be the public’s favourite) and lastly Artem Chigvintsev and partner Natalie Gumede (who is probably the public’s least liked after it was revealed that she had been dancing since she was very young). We have had a quick poll in the

office and we’d like Abbey to win, failing that Sophie.

In the finals of this year’s X Factor at the weekend there was another closely fought competition. In the first round little Luke Friend (Mr Smiley face) went out leaving it way too close for comfort between “over 30’s” contestant Sam Bailey who was very nearly out sung by judge Nicole Scherzinger in the duet part of the final (what was she thinking of – it was supposed to be about the contestant – Doh! – even Louis commented on it) and 17-year-old Scot Nicholas McDonald. Winner on the night was Sam Bailey, quite rightly we think. Sam couldn’t believe she’d won and Sharon Osbourne

was left in tears and speechless falling to the floor!

Then last but not least it was the BBC Sports Personality of the year. No surprises there though as tennis ace Andy Murray who had a stonking year for once won the gong which was presented by Martina Navratilova who looked younger than ever.

Two deaths this week were actors Peter O’Toole who will probably be best remembered for his rôle as Lawrence of Arabia, and Joan Fontayne from the 1940’s version of Rebecca and Hitchcock’s Suspicion. They will both be missed for their great professionalism. Kym Wickham

Singer Sam Bailey can’t believe she’s won X Factor 2013

Comic Relief under investments fire It seems that people have been confusing Children In Need (Pudsey Bear etc.) with Comic Relief (Red Nose Day) and, following a recent exposé carried out by Panorama on the

money pulled in by Comic Relief (Red Nose) that it says has invested in shares in arms and tobacco companies, Terry Wogan is the latest to comment on Comic Relief.

The BBC veteran, who has been the face of “Children In Need” (Pudsey Bear) since he first hosted the telethon in 1980, says that the news could not only harm Comic Relief, but other organisations around it. “People do often get Children in Need confused with Comic Relief,” he said. “Comic Relief is a commercial organisation

and it has nothing to do with me, whereas Children in Need is the BBC’s own charity. I can guarantee that all of our money is spent in, if anything, too conservative a manner. Editor says: Sounds totally bonkers to me but I know from past years that those who take part throughly enjoy themselves –

Robert Goddard I was sitting, chilling out in front of the telly on Saturday night and, although one could say I should get out more, I had to watch the first part of the final of the X Factor. Yes, I know it’s sad but there are millions of us do it every year so I don’t feel too bad! This year’s competition has been a closely run thing and I have to admit that I get hooked right at the start every year by watching the auditions. How some of them can even think they have a chance is beyond me and I suppose I must be some sort of a masochist to actually listen to the dreadful voices, or on the other hand, perhaps I’m a sadist as I just love watching them fail miserably – horrible person that I am but, let’s face it, they are utterly

especially the hot toddy afterwards – and they raise money for a good cause. I know there are a lot of equally bonkers people out there so, why not do something different and join them this year? Or if you don’t fancy the dip, pop along, watch them do their bit and at least give them a euro or two for the animals for having the guts to go in the cold briney at this time of year.

Benalmadena

hillariously bad! Getting back to the point of my letter. What in God’s name was that horrible woman doing? I am of course referring to Nicole Scherzinger, the on-off girlfriend of Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton. She took the opportunity to show off what a voice she has, at the expense of the lovely lady finalist contestant Sam Bailey. The look on Sam’s face was a picture at one point in the song and clearly said “What the hell do you think you’re doing”, but she soldiered on regardless and came out the winner in the end. In the second part of the show even ever-smiling Louis Walsh made a comment about it. I’m sure that Ms Scherzinger is a good singer and is good looking

in an odd sort of way but, in my opinion, she doesn’t have a very nice personality (what’s with the “Sch” bit she puts in front of her words if not to make it clear who exactly has the limelight at that moment?) and I think she needs to be got rid of for the next series. Simon Cowell has a reputation for being “Mr. Nasty” but at least he’s up-front about it and, the guy knows what he’s talking about at the end of the day. The sneaky Ms Scherzinger needs to get herself back in the pit lanes supporting Hamilton and leave the telly to others. Oh, by the way, wasn’t The Duchess’s (Mrs. O’s) reaction to her finalist lovely. She was obviously over the moon with Sam and all her efforts. What a nice pair they’ve made.

Katya Okninska Mijas Not long to go now... Christmas is almost upon us. I made the cake and the pud months ago, feeding weekly with brandy so I’m hoping that as the pudding is set alight it doesn’t torch the whole of my apartment! At least the cake for teatime should calm down my guests if that does happen as there’s so much booze in it they should be nicely relaxed. The turkey is ordered and I’ve got my recipe all ready to go. Talking of which I have looked at what seems hundreds of different versions and come down to the original one which says: “wash the bird, put it

in an oven tray, roast!” Seems simple enough to me. I have little sausages in the freezer to wrap round with streaky bacon, and Monday and Tuesday will be spent trudging round the shops getting all the veg. Parsnips and sprouts plus potatoes for roasties of course are top of the list plus a red cabbage to add colour that I shall spice up as usual in the traditional Russian way. I almost forgot, I still have to buy presents for a whole hoard of people so I’d better email this quickly and get going on my buying and wrapping. Merry Christmas everyone!”

Ford unveils new Mustang hometown of Detroit.

VW may build Seat SUV at Skoda plant Volkswagen Group may build an SUV for Spanish sister brand Seat at Skoda's plant in Kvasiny, Czech Republic, company sources say. The model would be produced alongside the next-generation Skoda Yeti compact SUV at the factory, where production costs are significantly lower than at Seat’s plant in Martorell, Spain. Sales of SUVs and crossovers are booming in Europe, where Seat sells the majority of its cars, but unlike sister brands Skoda, VW and Audi, the Spanish carmaker lacks such a model.

VW Group hasn't approved the SUV for Seat because it is still investigating whether the money-losing subsidiary can afford to add the model.

Seat President Juergen Stackmann said the SUV would be an important strategic building block in the automaker’s product offensive in Europe. Seat’s sales are on the rise since it introduced the new Leon compact car range, which currently includes threeand five-door hatchbacks as well as a station wagon.

The Leon, Toledo compact and Mii minicar helped to boost Seat's sales by 10 percent to 242,487 in the first 10 months in EU and EFTA countries in a market that was down by 3 percent during the period, according to industry association ACEA.

A future SUV for Seat could be based on the IBX Concept unveiled at the 2011 Geneva auto show.

Santa delivers three Mijas Bowls Club hosts `e Ball and Chain´ points for Malaga Malaga 1 - 0 Getafe

After the break for the Copa del Rey last week it was back to La Liga action and a must-win scenario for Malaga. The first half started evenly as both sides probed for the first goal. Garcia for Getafe squandered an early header and then Sanchez had a chance to put Malaga in front but Moya saved well for Getafe. Antunes then fired wide from outside the box and

Juanmi hit the post from an Antunes cross when in reality he should have converted. A Getafe free kick forced Caballero into a good save and then Leon forced a similar save from the Malaga keeper. Malaga were growing into the game and in the second half always looked the likely winners. Juanmi put a rebound over the bar as another good chance went begging. The breakthrough came with fifteen minutes left, when

Duda, on for Pedro Morales, curled a free kick for substitute Santa Cruz to bullet a header into the top corner with his first touch. Malaga were in total control for the last fifteen minutes and comfortably held on for a great three points.

The team travel to Elche on Friday night hoping for another much needed win. Report by Scott Forbes

The “Ball and Chain” if not the longest running tournament on the coast, is most certainly one of the longest running, as the first record of it being played goes back to 1991.

The sponsor on this occasion was Focus Investment Planning. During the early rounds there were some very close games, quite a few being won or lost on the last end or by only one shot. Those who were knocked out in the first round were able to to join the plate competition which ran alongside the main one.

The plate finalists were Mijas members Val and Tony Thornton against Maureen and Terry Barrett from Bel Playa. Val and Tony found it difficult to get going on that afternoon and so the eventual winners were Maureen and Terry.

Plate winners Maureen & Terry

One of the semifinals of the main event between Barrie and Angie Holt of Lauro and the Mijas couple Peter and Val Allard was a very low scoring and a very close game, as the last end

Robert, the captain with all the finalists

started at 13 all. Barry and Angie became the winners of that match. The other semi-final was between Theo and Nel Bellaart and a much favoured couple Kate Morris and Brian Todd, all from Bel Playa. Theo and Nel overcame Kate and Brian to join the Lauro couple, Barry and Angie, in what was to be a very good final. Seeing Theo and Nel play was like watching a master class in bowling so it was no surprise that they were the eventual winners. It was the first time the Bellaarts had played in the Ball and Chain, though they are not newcomers to bowling as Theo has been involved in European bowling over the years. They are from Holland and like many British bowlers spend the winter in Spain to get away from the Northern European weather. We look forward to seeing them again next year to defend their title.

Unfortunately, the sponsor was not there to present the prizes as he had been called back to England, so they were presented by

Robert Wright, the Captain of Mijas. A buffet organised by Carol Wright and her helpers followed the event.

Winners Theo & Nel

Glenn Hoddle interested in Spurs job

Glenn Hoddle would be willing to become Tottenham manager for a second time in a short-term or long-term capacity. Hoddle, 56, managed Spurs between 2001 and 2003 and is among those tipped to replace Andre Villas-Boas, who was sacked on Monday. The former England manager is interested in a return to his former club and is close to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. Villas-Boas' departure after 17 months at White Hart Lane came in the wake of Spurs' 5-0 loss to Liverpool.

First win for Sergio Aussies regain Sergio Garcia recorded his first win of 2013 by shooting a the `little urn´ final-round 68 at the Thailand Golf Championship. The 33-year-old, who led from the second round, hit six birdies and two bogeys as he finished on 22 under, four shots clear of Sweden's Henrik Stenson. Stenson also hit a 68 to finish four ahead of France's Alexander Levy (69). England's Justin Rose (72) was fourth on 13 under with South Africa's Charl Schwartzel (67), Japan's Yuki Kono (69) and Anirban Lahiri (73) of India. Garcia's victory was his first since the Johor Open in Malaysia last December. "I knew Henrik was going to make it difficult for me," said Garcia. "He's been playing so amazingly great, and he did. "He kept hitting good shot after good shot. And

Dubai and FedEx Cup in the same year, admitted he felt tired during the tournament. "I've had a great year but coming here really on the fumes left in the tank, not too much going for me to perform in that sense," he said.

Australia, as widely expected, regained the Ashes after finally putting an end to England's resistance on the last day of the third Test in Perth. Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Lyon were the heroes for Australia, combining to take the five final-day wickets to ensure the home side would take a 3-0 unbeatable series lead with a 150-run victory. Johnson captured the final two scalps of the match to finish with a creditable 478 and send his side into a mid-pitch frenzy at the WACA Ground. Australian players celebrated in a huddle and then dispersed to the boundary to thank the crowd after regaining the Ashes urn for the first time in four series. Johnson had James Anderson

Real Madrid and Barcelona to face European Union investigation Real Madrid and Barcelona are among seven Spanish clubs to be investigated over alleged illegal state aid. The Spanish foreign ministry announced that the European Commission will also begin proceedings against Osasuna, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia and Elche. Hercules, who play in the second tier, are also under investigation. "The government will fight to defend Spanish clubs because they're also part of the Spanish brand," said foreign minister Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo. The proceedings could take months to conclude and will be officially announced on Wednesday added Margallo, who denied the clubs had broken EU rules. He said Barcelona, Real Madrid, Osasuna and Athletic Bilbao are accused of contravening European Union rules because they are still owned by their members and had benefited from favourable tax treatment. The Commission was also probing Real over their training facilities and Bilbao over aid they received for the construction of their new stadium, which opened this season, he added. Valencia, Elche and Hercules were being investigated because of help the three clubs received from the regional government in the form of loans and bank guarantees.
