Storm leaves 13 dead in northern Europe

The storm that swept across north-western Europe on Monday killed at least 13 people - four of them in the UK where as many as 660,000 homes suffered power cuts, though many were later reconnected. In Kent, 17-year-old Bethany Freeman, was crushed when a tree fell on one of the static caravans her family was living in during renovation work at their home. Father-ofthree Donal Drohan, 51, was killed by a falling tree as he drove through Watford. A man and a woman died when they were trapped under rubble after an uprooted tree caused a gas explosion in Hounslow in west London.

In Germany, a fisherman and a sailor were killed in separate accidents at sea, while four people were killed in separate incidents when trees fell onto cars.

German authorities halted all local trains in Schleswig-Holstein, as well as the HanoverBremen service and north-bound trains from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Along

In Brittany, a woman was swept out to sea, and in the Dutch city of Amsterdam a tree felled by the wind crushed a woman walking along by a canal.

Last week when I was delivering papers in the La Cala de Mijas area there were some very welldressed ladies meeting together for a coffee and a chat and with them they had the most gorgeous little creature. His name was “Oh” and he was a pet baby Meercat. What an absolute little darling he was and here’s a photo of him. Now altogether: “I want one!”

It’s been a busy week with lots of new adverts coming in and lots of changes to current ones as Christmas is coming up fast and there’s loads of things to see and do over the festive season. I know it’s early but, around now you should start making your Christmas cakes and puds so that you can “feed” them brandy for the next few weeks. If you don’t, they won’t taste quite as good and it’s always

He had tests for Leishmania (negative, thank God!) and they’ve taken a bit from his eyelid to send for a biopsy, the results of which we haven’t got back yet. He’s had two stitches put in and it’s now looking a whole lot better. Still a bucket-head though and it certainly hasn’t stopped him chasing the cats! Flippin animals ... they’re like kids that never grow up but, I love them all to bits and wouldn’t want to be without any of them.

The storm whipped across Brittany and Normandy early on Monday, felling trees and knocking out power lines in some places. At Belle-Ile in Brittany a woman was swept into the sea from a cliff, while power cuts hit 42,000 homes in northern France.

In Brussels, a big banner on the European Commission building – the Berlaymont – was shredded by the wind.

Emergency services in Denmark and Sweden issued storm warnings, as Scandinavia faced winds gusting at about 100mph. Back in the UK, on Tuesday over 57,000 homes were still without power. Engineers restored supplies to 100,000 homes overnight, while the storm brought

The Energy Networks Association said more than 660,000 homes in total had lost supply during the storm. Engineers had trouble reaching some of the more remote areas in southern England because of fallen trees and it could be a few days before power supplies were restored to all locations.

NSA 'monitored 60 million Spanish calls in a month'

The US National Security Agency (NSA) secretly monitored 60 million phone calls in Spain in one month, El Mundo newspaper reported on Monday. El Mundo said the telephone monitoring did not appear to track the content of calls, only their duration and where they took place. It said the surveillance also included intrusions into personal information through Internet browsers, email and social networks like Facebook and Twitter. The newspaper said it had reached a deal with Glenn Greenwald, the Brazil-based journalist who has worked with other media on information provided to him by former U.S. national security contractor Edward Snowden,

to get access to documents affecting Spain.

In the past few days, other European newspapers have reported similar U.S. spying in France, and that the mobile phone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel was monitored for several years, along with spying on 34 other world leaders.

In the absence of Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo – who was visiting his Polish counterpart in Warsaw – the Secretary of State for the European Union, Inigo Mendez de

Vigo, summoned the US ambassador to Spain, James Costos, to discuss the allegations. After the meeting, Mr Costos vowed to clear the "doubts" that had arisen about his country's alleged espionage. Sr Mendez de Vigo said such practices, if true, were "inappropriate

and unacceptable".

Meanwhile, Sr GarciaMargallo told a news conference in Warsaw that he had been in touch with the U.S. ambassador before the Madrid meeting, saying that "so far, we have no official indication that our country has been

Thousands protest Ryanair loses another court case Strasbourg ruling Tens of thousands of people marched in Madrid on Sunday to protest against a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that will lead to the release of terrorists, rapists and other violent criminals before they serve the maximum jail terms allowed by Spanish law.

A Madrid commercial court has ruled that a number of clauses in the terms and conditions of carriage of low-cost carrier Ryanair are null and void.

Among these is the airline’s €40 fee for the reprinting of a passenger boarding pass at the airport. The consumer protection group OCU the Irish airline’s practices “violate consumerprotection legislation,” pointing out that in some cases the charge for printing the boarding pass is more than the cost of the ticket. OCU filed a suit in 2011 against what it called abusive clauses in the travel conditions of Ryanair, Iberia, Spanair and Vueling.

The court has thrown out a total of eight clauses, including Ryanair’s insistence on the production of certain identity documents before allowing passengers to

travel, its requirement that all legal complaints against the carrier be filed with the Irish authorities, as well as the requirement that tickets should be paid for at the airport using a debit or credit card and not in cash.

spectacles, sunglasses, contact lenses, watches, mobile phones and personal electronic devices. The court ordered Ryanair to publish its ruling in one of the three major newspapers in Spain.

Ryanair chief Michael O’Leary

The court also ruled as abusive the airline’s refusal to accept items in baggage such as money, jewellery, precious metals, keys, cameras, computers, medicines,

OCU said it does not believe Ryanair will comply with the court’s ruling and urged the authorities to take action against the airline if it persists with its abusive practices.

The protest was organised by Spain’s largest terrorism victims association, the AVT, which described itself as

“the last bulwark of democratic dignity in Spain” after the courts released two ETA terrorists and one rapist shortly after the Strasbourg court announced its decision to annul the so-called “Parot Doctrine” – a legal tool that effectively cancelled out the generous term reductions that prisoners enjoyed thanks to the 1973 penal code, which enabled long-term convicts to bring down their sentences to as little as 18 years.

The Parot Doctrine kept them in jail for the 30-year maximum legal term, as reductions were deducted from the sentence total. Leading members of the ruling Partido Popular (PP) joined the march, including Madrid Mayor Ana Botella, former Madrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre and Eurodeputy Jaime Mayor Oreja, who were heckled by a small group of protesters.

'Spain worth fighting for' Crown Prince Felipe, accompanied by Princess Letizia and Queen Sofía, handed out the 2013 Prince of Asturias Awards in Oviedo last Friday to this year’s eight winners of the €50,000 prizes – Spanish writer Antonio Muñoz Molina (Literature); Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke (Arts); Dutch sociologist Saskia Sassen (Social Sciences); golfer José María

Olazábal (Sports); physicists Peter Higgs and François Englert and CERN director general Rolf Heuer (Technical & Scientific Research); US photographer AnnieLeibovitz(Communication and Humanities); Spanish blind organisation ONCE (Concord) and the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (International Cooperation). Speaking at the end of the

ceremony at the Campoamor Theatre, Prince Felipe urged Spaniards to be courageous in the crisis. “There are millions of Spaniards who battle every day to keep going with honesty, effort, bravery and humility. They are the people who really make Spain a great nation, which is worth living in and loving and make it worth fighting for.”

Put the ‘Wow Factor’ back in your floor The first thing people notice when entering a room is the floor. If your marble floor is graying from wear and ageing, it will create a dull room. Bringing back the beautiful look of your marble’s natural brilliance will always bring a home back to life.

Tony’s Marble Restoration Service specialises in marble and terrazzo renovation, bringing out your marble floor’s rich natural grain. Regain the brilliant shine your floors once had and make them dazzle once again. You will be amazed at the transformation from your current dull, dingy marble floors to a beautifully restored, better than new appearance. If your floors were not professionally diamond polished after installation, then you’ve probably never seen them at their best. As time goes by, many fine marble floors become worn,

stained and damaged. Tony’s Marble Restoration uses modern equipment that can undo years of wear and damage. Most stains are removed, even the ones you thought were permanent.

It is not generally realised that marble is quite fragile and porous. Left untreated, it can wear quite badly very quickly. Therefore, an equally important reason for having the marble renovated is to seal and protect it, and leave the surface on the marble that is not only a high gloss, non-slip, low maintenance surface, but is considerably harder

than the marble itself.

The property market on the Costa del Sol is not moving very rapidly at the moment. Polishing your floors will make your property far more attractive to a potential purchaser. Remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Tony’s Marble Polishing and Restoration Services have served as possibly the most affordable on the Costa del Sol for over 10 years. Gas leak kills six miners N the

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Six miners died on Monday as the result of a methane gas leak at the Pozo Emilio del Valle mine in Pola de Gordón in the Castilla-León region.

A helicopter, three ambulances and a mobile intensive care unit were dispatched to the mine and evacuated a further five workers, four of whom are in a serious condition in hospital and the fifth one is critical. It was the worst accident in the sector in Spain since 1995, when 14 people were killed in a gas explosion at a mine in Asturias.

A spokesman for the company that owns the mine said the miners encountered a “deposit of gas that did not explode,” adding that a second team of workers that had gone to the aid of the group suffered the worst effects of the leak. Rescue teams said they believed that nobody remained in the mine.

World News Putin says gay athletes welcome

Russian President Vladimir Putin insisted at a meeting on Monday with Thomas Bach, the head of the International Olympic Committee, that gay and lesbian athletes have nothing to fear at next year's Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

"We will do everything to make sure that athletes, fans and guests feel comfortable at the Olympic Games regardless of their ethnicity, race or sexual orientation. I would like to underline that," Mr Putin said. Russia has been criticised over a new law banning "homosexual propaganda" aimed at people under 18. The law outraged activists in the

West, who are calling on athletes and countries to boycott the Games. Gay bars in New York, London and elsewhere have boycotted Russian vodka. However, a recent poll found that nearly half of Russians believe that the gay and lesbian community should not enjoy the same rights as other citizens. Gay rights

groups have accused the IOC of not putting enough pressure on Russia, which has invested more in its Games than any previous Olympic host.

During his visit, Mr Bach made no public mention of the new law, focusing instead on Russia's preparations for the Olympics. He told reporters: "We are fully

confident that the Games will be on a magnificent level." Asked about concerns that there might not be enough snow to host events in the Krasnaya Polyana mountains, near Sochi, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, said organisers have stored 24.7 million cubic feet of snow as a contingency.

Bosphorus Strait Texas abortion restrictions blocked tunnel opens

A railway tunnel underneath the Bosphorus Strait opened on Tuesday, creating a new link between the Asian and European shores of Istanbul. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has for years championed the undersea engineering project, conceived by an Ottoman sultan in 1860.

Work began in 2004 but archaeological excavations delayed the construction. The 0.8 mile long tunnel cost €2.9 billion and is designed to withstand earthquakes. The Turkish government hopes the new

route under the Bosphorus will eventually develop into an important trading route, extending from China all the way to western Europe.

Critics of Mr Erdogan have seen the tunnel as one of his grandiose construction projects for the city where he used to be mayor. They include a third airport, a parallel canal and a third bridge. City officials say the tunnel will relieve pressure on the two existing bridges, as well as ease traffic congestion and pollution.

Texas District Judge Lee Yeakel judge ruled on Monday that abortion restrictions passed by the state's legislature are unconstitutional. He said the new regulations violated doctors' rights and unreasonably restricted women's access to abortion clinics.

Judge Yeakel's order means the law will not come into effect on Tuesday. The bill was signed into law in July and was among the most restrictive in the US, banning abortions at the 20th week of pregnancy

and requiring doctors to perform abortions at special surgical facilities. The subsequent lawsuit was brought by Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers in the state, who argued that the law's requirement for doctors to have an admissions agreement with a local hospital within 30 miles of their clinic would force the closure of many providers. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is expected to file an emergency appeal to the federal regional appeals court in New Orleans.

State funeral for Tito's widow

The widow of former Yugoslav leader Marshal Tito, Jovanka broz, who died of heart failure at the age of 88 last weekend, was honoured in a state funeral in the Serbian capital. She was buried next to her husband in the elaborate House of Flowers mausoleum and received full military honours in line with her status as a decorated member of the anti-Nazi partisans who fought in World War II. Mrs broz lived as a recluse in belgrade after the death of her husband in 1980. She was accused of plotting a coup, placed under house arrest for a time, and had her identity papers taken away. Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said at the funeral that it was time to admit that the treatment she received after her husband's death was a "sin". CHIle

Soldiers' widows sue Communist leader

The widows of three Chilean soldiers have launched legal action against Communist Party leader Guillermo Teillier after he admitted his party approved an armed operation targeting the late General Augusto Pinochet in 1986. Five soldiers died and 11 were injured in the ambush. In a newspaper interview in April, Mr Teillier said the ambush and other armed operations in the 1980s were "nothing more than a reaction" to what the government had been doing against the Communist leadership. The women taking legal action want him jailed for the deaths, saying "we want justice and equality before the law, that's all we want". Around 3,000 people disappeared or died in Chile between 1973 and 1990 and 30,000 are believed to have been tortured by the authorities.

An elderly Australian couple were unwittingly used as drug mules in a ruse involving a free week-long trip to Canada, with flights, hotel and new luggage included. but when they landed back in Perth, they told customs officials they feared something was wrong with their luggage. Officials subsequently found 3.5kg of methamphetamine in the lining of each bag, with an estimated street value of the drugs at A$7m (£4.1m). A 38-year-old man was arrested later that day at Perth airport and has since been charged with drug-related offences. Police believed the suitcases were swapped while the couple, aged 72 and 64, were in Canada. Perth Airport Police Commander David bachi said: "Thankfully the travellers contacted Customs and didn't dismiss their concerns, allowing us to make the arrest."

Police seek Tiananmen suspects Police in China have named two suspects linked to a "major incident" in Beijing, after a car crashed into a crowd in Tiananmen Square and burst into flames, killing five people.

Police subsequently issued a notice to hotels in Beijing seeking information about two people from Xinjiang province –, home to the minority Muslim Uighur group, some of whom complain of cultural and religious repression, leading to sporadic outbreaks of violence. State-run Xinhua news agency said of the five people who died on Monday, that three people died inside the car and two tourists were killed.

Another 38 people were injured. Police shut down the scene of the incident – at the north end of the square at an entrance to the Forbidden City –shortly after it occurred, temporarily closing a subway station and a road.

A BBC crew attempting to record footage at the location were briefly detained, while on Chinese social media some pictures of the scene were deleted and comments were heavily censored. There has been no official statement on the cause of the incident. Tiananmen Square is a

highly sensitive site due to its link to China's 1989 prodemocracy protests, which were ended by a military crackdown. The square is generally kept under very tight security both because of its proximity to key political institutions and to deter protesters and petitioners.

Setback for Argentine president President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's Front for Victory party suffered a setback in midterm polls on Sunday. It was defeated in Buenos Aires province, where the Renewal Front list headed by her former protégée Sergio Massa won by 11.8 percentage

points. However, Ms Fernandez's party retained its majority in both houses of Congress. The poll is seen as a good indicator of who might replace the president when she leaves office in two years' time. Ms Fernandez is barred by the constitution from running for a third term in

SALINA’S

office. A constitutional amendment would have required a two-thirds majority in Congress, for which her party now has insufficient seats. President Fernandez's government has been facing increasing discontent about rising crime, high inflation and corruption.

Alleged bomber stoned to death A man was killed by Afghan villagers because they believed he set off a bomb that killed 18 people on their way to a wedding on Sunday.

Eighteen people, including at least 14 women and one child, were killed, and only five of the 23 people on the bus, all of them women, were believed to have survived. Officials said a crowd of more than 100 people dragged the man out of his hiding place, beat him with sticks and shovels, and then stoned him until he died. They then fired about 200 bullets at his body. The Taliban issued a statement saying it "vehemently" denied involvement, blaming government-allied militiamen. Afghan civilians are often hit by roadside bombs planted by the group to kill government officials.

Cameron in new bid Prince’s message to to cut European fire fighters legislation British Prime Minister David Cameron has successfully persuaded the European Commission to take a new initiative to remove red tape which he believes is hampering businesses across the European Union.

The Prime Minister praised the Commission for doing an excellent job in repealing 6,000 pieces of legislation since 2005 but called for more to be done. Mr Cameron has his own business task force team and it has now made

30 recommendations to make life easier for companies and reduce their costs further.

The new initiative has the support of Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Prime Ministers of Poland, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy and Estonia. Action would often mean removing 28 sets of national rules for the member countries and replacing them with just

one set all could adopt.

Speaking at a meeting in Brussels, Mr Cameron explained that there were practical reasons why this was necessary in the digital age. The Office of National Statistics in Britain gave the Prime Minister a boost on Friday when it announced that GDP was 1.5 per cent ahead of the same period last year. Manufacturing and house building contributed to the improved figures.

Newspapers fear press regulation The British press has long been a benchmark for freedom of information throughout the world, but that has been threatened by the industry’s own behaviour and the telephone hacking scandal in particular.

Britain’s three main political parties have at last come up with proposals for a new system of press regulation. It is now 11 months since the Leveson inquiry into press standards.

The latest proposals for amendments to a royal charter establishing the new rules were designed to placate the newspapers, but they still have deep reservations and a group of press freedom organisations from around the world have written to the Queen expressing concern. If the charter is approved by the Privy Council it could be signed by the Queen this week.

Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks (below) and former News of the World Editor Andy Coulson face trial this week in connection with phone hacking allegations and alleged payments to public officials.

While Britain has been suffering from severe stormy weather over the weekend and the rain has been hammering down it has been a very different story in Australia with volunteer fire fighters battling serious bush fires in New South Wales. His Royal Highness The

Prince of Wales has made a contribution to the Australian Red Cross to help support people affected by the bush fires. The Prince met some of the fire fighters at Bondi Beach last year and they are now fighting the bush fires around Sydney. Many people have lost their homes.

Health bosses earn more than Cameron A culture of excessive pay and pay offs in Britain’s National Health Service has led to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt warning senior staff that their actions are “unacceptable and unjustified.”

Against a background of fears over energy security, Britain is to have a new nuclear power station with two generating units built at the existing facility at Hinkley Point in Somerset. Prime Minister David Cameron met workers at Hinkley Point before touring the new site with Secretary of State for Energy Edward Davey, who said the agreement to build the new plant was an excellent deal for Britain.

“For the first time, a nuclear power station in this country will not have been built with money from the British taxpayer,” he said. French operator EDF will construct the new facility. Britain has adopted a twin approach to energy provision with a great deal of investment also going into small wind and solar power projects.

He said in the Daily Telegraph that the health service needed a collective reality check to avoid making the same mistakes as the BBC, where excessive pay and pay offs had damaged public confidence in the institution.

Interest rates to rise in Britain? The clearest indication yet that interest rates are to rise in Britain was given by the Bank of England which has upgraded its growth forecast and believes unemployment will fall more quickly than anticipated.

EWS

Economists believe the first rate rise will occur at the start of 2016, but some traders believe it could be earlier. The bank’s Monetary Policy Committee is widely expected to respond to a surprisingly sudden pick-up in economic prospects.

The story of missing Madeline McCann, who was aged three when she disappeared in May 2007, is back in the headlines in Britain.

Portuguese Police have announced they are to reopen the case and this follows the release by British detectives of composite images of two men they want to identify and a television reconstruction of events in Praia da Luz, where they McCanns were on holiday when Madeline went missing. British detectives believe a vast log of mobile phone traffic could be the key to finding out what happened to the child.

Arsenal beat struggling Crystal Palace 2-0 to stay top of English soccer’s Premier League. Palace are without a manager following the resignation of Ian Holloway last week. But there are signs that Manchester United, who have made a poor start to the season under David Moyes, are getting a bit of their old metal back. United beat a stubborn Stoke 3-2 on Saturday and it was a typical Old Trafford comeback performance.

The wrong Granada Two hours after boarding a flight at London’s Gatwick airport on September 1st, thinking she was on her way to Granada in Spain as part of a “bucket list” dream of visiting the famous Alhambra, 62year-old holistic life coach Lamenda Kingdon from Plymouth, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and a brain tumour, found she was in fact on her way to Grenada (note the different spelling) in the Carribean and part way into a long-haul 10 hour flight! The error came to light as she chatted to a fellow passenger saying that she was looking forward to seeing the Spainish city when she was told: “Not on this flight you won’t!”. She had booked the flight by telephone and hadn’t noticed the different spelling on the ticket she had booked using her late husband’s Avios Airmiles on her British Airways flight. Lamenda said she had noticed the vastly different departure and arrival

times but assumed it was something to do with the two countries time differences. Staff on the plane escorted her through to First class once they knew of the mistake and gave her a bottle of champagne. Mrs Kingdon got off the plane at a scheduled stop in St Lucia where she spent six hours in the airport terminal before boarding a flight all the way back again. Once there BA staff arranged an overnight stay at an hotel at Gatwick, re-imbursed her 50,000 airmiles and booked her on a flight to GrAnada the following day. She says she thoroughly enjoyed Granada despite the original hiccup in her plans. She was diagnosed with cancer in early 2012, underwent a mastectomy in March and radiotherapy in June of that year, but a follow-up check revealed a brain tumour. Having lost her husband Barry to cancer in 2009, she was determined to make the most of her time and drew up her bucket list. Barry, a trainer, had accumulated thousands of air miles – now Avios Points – while commuting by plane across the West Country. Lamenda flew to Ontario, Canada, in July to see her son and grandson before planning her ill-fated trip to Granada. Avios apologised for their part in the mistake and issued her with another 22,000 points, leaving her with 121,000. She now has the 120,000 she needs to her reach her next dream destination – a trip to Omarama in New Zealand, described by visitors as an unspoilt paradise. Better still, Lamenda has since been given the all clear by her cancer doctors so she hopes to make the trip next Christmas (2014) with a clean bill of health. Craig Holland, head of the Customer Contact Centre at the Avios Travel Rewards Programme, said: 'We booked Mrs Kingdon on a flight to Grenada instead of Granada but as soon as we heard we reimbursed her the Avios and all her expenses, and gave her more Avios as compensation. We are so pleased to hear that she is now planning her next trip.'

Most expensive council house A house that sits on the south bank of the River Thames in Southwark, West London, that is in need of extensive upgrading went to auction yesterday by Savills Auction House at the Marriot Hotel, Grosvenor Square, London, with a reserve price of £2.3million. It actually went under the hammer in the end for £2.96 million.

The 200-year-old, 5,500 square feet building built in around 1820, that takes in numbers 21 and 23 Park Street, had been the subject of interest from many private buyers and developers from around the world keen to own a slice of central London and may be split up and divided into flats. It is thought that it originally housed managers or directors of the then local Anchor Brewery, now owned by brewing giant Courage, as you can still see the Anchor’s advert printed on the building’s side.

There are of course many houses in central London that could make the same kind of money so, why are we telling you about this particular one? Because it is a council house! The building, owned by Southwark council since the demise of the Greater London

Council in 1986 had been empty for many years and the costs of repair were prohibitive to the council who will use the money raised to repair other housing stock in its area.

Chris Coleman-Smith, head of auctions at Savills, which carried out the sale, said before the auction: "We think this will be the most expensive council home ever sold, and we're delighted that the proceeds of sale will contribute to creating more housing in the borough. I think the boom will continue for a little while longer."

Councillor Ian Wingfield, cabinet member for housing management, said: "Selling council homes is not something I would ordinarily advocate, but this is a no-brainer in terms of the capital we'll receive to invest back into housing, for improving existing stock and new build." According to the Office for National Statistics, house prices increased by 8.7% in the 12 months until August.

Are you Modelo 720 ready? I cannot believe we are already in October! And so the Modelo 720 raises its head again – you may remember that this is a new reporting requirement for residents of Spain (including foreign nationals) and April 2013 was the first year that assets held outside of Spain were to be declared to the authorities here.

We have worked with our clients throughout last year and this to put them in a situation where they are ‘Modelo 720 ready’. It is not uncommon for us to come across expats living in Spain ‘unofficially’. More often than not, many expats spend more than six months in Spain but still ‘declare’ that they are tax resident in the UK or elsewhere. The important point to remember here is that it is not where we consider ourselves to be resident that matters, it is where the Spanish authorities deem us to be resident should they investigate us! And the onus incidentally, is for us to be able to demonstrate and prove our stay in Spain each year is for less than six months. Usually, expats continue to declare residency in the UK due to a lack of knowledge of and confidence in navigating the Spanish system. As UK expats we are familiar with terms like ISA, SIPP, OFFSHORE BOND, we understand them and enjoy the tax breaks that these bring with them as UK residents.

However, are you aware that similar tax breaks are available to you here in Spain? Many people are not. Are you aware that although an ISA is tax efficient in the UK, it is actually the opposite here in Spain? Are you aware that although an Offshore Bond is tax efficient in the UK, it is actually the opposite here in Spain? Are you aware that although a SIPP is tax efficient in the UK, it is actually the opposite here in Spain?

Apologies for repeating the same question for all three different assets, I could go on to name other assets too, but the point I am making is that what is very tax efficient in one country is not necessarily the case in another – in terms of both income tax and inheritance tax (even spouse to spouse).

We can help you navigate the Spanish system by putting you in a ‘Modelo 720 Ready’ situation, but HURRY ... TIME IS RUNNING OUT and although the next return is not due until between the dates of 1st January and 31st March 2014, the information on the Modelo 720 return is a snapshot of your overseas assets as at 31st December 2013.

By Andrea Speed looking over your shoulder, wondering what the contents of a letter from the authorities means when it lands on your doorstep unexpectedly). By ‘Modelo 720 Ready’ I mean that we can help you put your finances in order, taking advantage of the very generous tax breaks available to you as residents of Spain and often as a result many of our clients are not even required to complete the Modelo 720 and can sleep at night in the knowledge that they are legitimately taking advantage of those tax breaks.

Please take a look at our website ww.speedfinancial solutions.com for further information regarding the Modelo 720 and contact us (Tel 951 315 271 or 951 318 529) – we are happy to discuss your own situation in more detail. One of our advisers will be happy to come and spend some time with you either in your home or at our office to explain and go through the Modelo 720, so do call to make an appointment.

If you enjoy the climate here in Spain, and the way of life, why leave yourself open to unnecessary tax and potential heavy penalties (not to mention the sleepless nights and

Military prosecutors are seeking jail terms for the military personnel in charge of the San Hermenegildo student residence in Seville from 2005 to 2009. They are accused of embezzling almost €300,000 from the coffers in a case that came to light in 2010 after students' complaints about the “inedible” food being served and its scarcity. Colonels Francisco Muñoz and Sebastián Clavijo ate shellfish and drank expensive liquors while their charges "starved." Both men face a 20-year prison sentence. Ignorance is bliss

I

couldn't help but be surprised when I saw a Republican flag and the Hammer and Sickle floating above the heads of some students in last week's protest against the new education law. What on earth do they have to do with education, I thought. Then next day I read in the online newspaper El Confidencial Digital that some students had complained about being tricked into carrying placards demanding the elimination of religion from all schools.

O

ne student said they "came to protest the cuts and the (Communist) Workers Commissions gave us placards demanding secular schools". Another pointed out that student bus services had been cut back "and we have to wait hours to get to school, then home again". He said he was much more concerned about that than having to study religion.

I

n fact the new law makes religious instruction optional, re-introducing it in State schools after the Socialists' education law banned it in 2006. But while the Socialists are shrieking to high heaven about it, it's far from being the main problem in Spain's schools. Despite the fact that most children are receiving some sort of schooling by the age of three, Spain is still at the bottom of the class in all subjects after Italy, and has the highest drop-out rate in the EU. A recent government questionnaire showed that as many as three Spaniards in four don't grasp the meaning of what they're reading and a similar number can't even do simple addition and subtraction – forget about multiplying and dividing. One paper printed a few of the questions for readers to try out and I got 10 out of 10 for each one. They were so simple that in my opinion a child of ten should have been able to answer them – that is, if he/she were getting a decent education.

S

o what's wrong with education in Spain? The Spanish aren't stupid – their medical researchers are among the best in the world and despite the fact that successive governments have not given information technologies the importance they deserve, young Spaniards are extremely savvy in this area, teaching themselves by trial and error and sharing their computer skills with their friends.

A

s one journalist pointed out on a political chat show the other night, the problem is that education here is politicised. The Partido Popular (traditional, conservative) has brought back religion, which the Socialists replaced with Civic Education in their 2006 law. I read some of the texts that were used in this course and believe me, they were very Marxist. Needless to say, the current government has dropped that course from the curriculum they want to introduce in all State schools next year. Meanwhile, the Left prattles on about "social education", which means teaching the kids to be good Socialists or Communists. In other countries, they call that brainwashing.

T

he other problem is that the regional governments have a say in what's taught in their schools. So the kids here learn all about the history of Andalucia and not much about the rest of the country, or the world, for that matter. The same thing happens with geography. As long as you can name the eight provinces which make up Andalucia, it doesn't matter if you can't find France, the USA or Russia on a map of the world. This government is trying to put an end to that, which is the main reason why the regions governed by the Socialists have threatened not to implement the law when it comes into effect next year.

M

eanwhile, more strikes are threatened – isn't it fun being out on the street, marching and shouting and feeling like the masters of the universe, much nicer than being stuck in a boring old classroom with a boring old teacher trying to fill my head with boring old knowledge.

T

Spies like us

Writes for the English language version of

A

s a North American, I am wondering what type of legal protection I can get back home if I find out that the US National Security Agency has spied on my phone calls or monitored my Internet communications while I have been in Europe. It appears that the NSA picked up on about 60 million people and their communications in Spain over a monthlong period beginning last December, according to information published in El Mundo on Monday with information supplied by the US journalist Glenn Greenwald. It isn't clear what the NSA was actually looking for but the Washington spooks also listened in to the conversations and private messages of many world leaders including those in Germany and Brazil. We can only assume, judging from what Obama and others have said about these unusual spying methods, that the US intelligence community was just homing in on any type of communications to see if terrorist activity is existent to protect us and our allies. But that doesn’t explain why Angela Merkel of Germany, Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico and at least 30 other leaders had their phones tapped.

I

n the United States there is a growing number of lawmakers – albeit a small group at this point – who are questioning why the world is getting its feathers ruffled when in fact the US government is going out of its way to protect their interests when it comes to terrorism and other law enforcement issues. We know that the US military was able to track down Osama Bin Laden by listening to his phone calls and those of others who knew he was hiding out right under the noses of Pakistani police. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that the United States with these capabilities would also use them on world leaders.

T

rue, there should be no surprise that Washington spies on its friends and neighbours as London, Ottawa, Canberra and Wellington do the same to some extent. This has gone on for decades. Earlier this year, the National Archives in London released a series of declassified documents that detailed Britain’s WW2 spying on isolationist groups in the United States, and how Winston Churchill was given full and precise details of a private call between President Roosevelt, US Secretary of State Cordell Hull and the ambassador in London at the time, Joe Kennedy.

I

n Spain, there are certain laws that provide for the protection of personal data of individual persons that can yield hefty prison terms if they

are abused. US Ambassador James Costas was reminded about this when he was called on the carpet at the Foreign Ministry on Monday. The American envoy explained later in a statement that President Obama has pledged to conduct an internal review “to ensure that the intelligence that is collected under these programmes is not just all the intelligence that the United States is able to collect, but rather intelligence that should and needs to be collected”. Where that borderline will be drawn will be anyone’s guess. Officials at the NSA have refused to meet with European lawmakers who travelled to Washington this week to discuss this matter.

A

nd we also don't know what legal ramifications all this espionage business will have in the coming months. There could be an avalanche of class action lawsuits filed on behalf of citizens by the powerful American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) if they choose to take on cases involving US residents living abroad who have had their privacy violated by their own government. The human rights watchdog, which also acts as a legal aid society, has already denounced that the country’s security apparatuses are actually becoming too big to control and, more frightening, will do all they can to ensure their own survival. “National security is the justification for our security establishment’s existence and powers, but self-preservation, defence of prerogatives and reputation, and expansion of powers is truly mission number one,” wrote James Stanley, a senior political analyst at the ACLU, on Monday.

O

n a personal level, the only real evidence I have of being a victim of US government spying was during the late 1970s when my correspondence from my pen pal who lived in East Germany would arrive opened and with the stamped notification that it had been read by American monitors. There was nothing interesting in our teenage-boy missives with musings about rock groups, and our regular exchanges of decals and magazine clippings. I never thought much of it at the time except that I felt a bit important because I had been singled out by some Cold War warriors in Washington. I was always tempted to throw in a certain word or two to Günter, my GDR buddy, to throw them off. Indeed, it was the sign of the times. My God, how those times have not changed!

Mark Dental on charity campaign in Peru problems.

Overall it was a successful journey and a great experience. We are more than happy to have had the opportunity to help these Inca people – although sometimes you wish you could do more.

Between the 3rd and the 13th October we spent 10 days in a small village called Coya in east Peru. This village had nothing to offer but a small hospital where we did our charity work.

Our team consisted of

two dental surgeons, three plastic surgeons and three nurses.

During six working days the surgeons performed over 50 surgeries and we treated over 100 patients. As dental surgeons we operated on children between the age of six and 15 years. Many of them suffered from cleft lips, cleft palates, malformations, impacted teeth, and also more familiar problems that we see in Europe – such as caries and gum

Many of them needed complicated orthodontic treatments in combination with maxillofacial surgery, these treatments could not be performed due to the lack of equipment and restrictions in the dental facilities. Before the trip we imagined that the

population would not really suffer from any dental caries or sugar induced diseases in the mouth, as we thought that they would have limited access to sweets and soft drinks in their daily diet. We were wrong. Even in this poor village, in every corner there were signs for Coca Cola! Small children were constantly walking around with a bottle of soft drink in their hand.

This confirmed yet again that caries is a worldwide disease.

Now back in Spain we

can proudly say that our team made a difference for people in need of help.

Throughout these 10 days, we had one day off which we took advantage of to visit the famous Inca ruins of Machu Picchu. From our village it was a four-hour journey with taxi, train and bus. But it was worthwhile because up there it was amazing! After spending six hours walking around and exploring this beautiful ancient city, at 3000 metres above sea level, we all felt short of oxygen and decided to get back down. In general it was a

successful trip and everything went very well. In the future we won’t hesitate to do other charity campaigns, given the opportunity. We would also like to thank our plastic-surgeon friend Kai Kaye from Ocean Clinic Marbella, and the rest of the team for a great experience once again. written by Sam Mark

Community News Finnish Friendship Day successful Narrowly escaping the cooler stormier weather last Saturday the Finnish Amistad Day organised by the Mijas town hall foreign residents department held in Mijas village enjoyed a good turnout including over 300 Finnish children from the Finnish primary school.

The Mijas Mayor, Ángel Nozál and Finnish consul Santiago Souviron de La Macorra – pictured here with some of the children – unveiled the forth plaque on the wall of international friendship before mingling with the crowd and enjoying tasty Finnish snacks and drinks on offer from various Finnish businesses.

Karelian pies and fireroasted or smoked salmon were the most popular.

Some of the Finnish children put on a couple of enjoyable choral, dance and musical shows before being treated to a donkey ride around the Virgen del La Peña Plaza by the Mayor and councillor for tourism Santiago Martin. Music from a rather talented Finnish rock band, a couple of beers, more Finnish tapas and the bouncy castle meant that just about everyone

who turned up had a good time.

The next event to be organised by the Mijas town hall foreign residents department will be the Christmas Market in La Cala de Mijas from the 30th of November to the 15th of December. Pete Woodall

Should You Really Have to Squint?

Strange question? Well one of the reasons why we Northern Europeans live here in Andalusia is the sunshine. I spent 3 weeks in the UK just recently and it was grey and overcast the whole time!

But at this time of year we often find that looking out over our surroundings we have to squint because of the low level sunshine. Now that's fine for the odd occasion but when you’re trying to go about daily business in your home or just relaxing behind the glazed-in terrace to enjoy the sun who wants to be wearing sun glasses all the time – especially if trying to watch TV or use the laptop/tablet/smart phone etc.? Well that's where Solar Shade can help. We've been established here five years now supplying Solar Control Window Films and Solar Blinds up and down the coast and inland to help home owners not only reduce heat build-up in their living space but also to control glare Solar Control Window Films will reduce glare without reducing vast amounts of light. They will

not make the rooms dark but will filter the glare to allow you to use all your gadgets or simply to read the paper without straining your eyes, and with the film applied you don't have to pull down blinds to control the glare. Being solar control films they help to even the temperature in the rooms preventing hot spots and at the onset of summer they work to provide a comfortable living environment. But, if the idea of a permanent installation to the glass is not to your liking what about Solar Blinds? With our solar blind system you can lower the glare reducing material to the height you prefer when it’s specifically needed and yet

still have vision through the blind itself, the blinds can then be lowered fully in the evening to prevent the daytime warmth that has been generated in the room by the winter sun from escaping, so adding to the comfort of the room after sunset. Go on improve your living environment and make living in the sun truly comfortable! If you would like to know more please feel free to contact us from our ad on Classifieds page 29.

Dodo - we'll meet again Dodo, recognised by those who know her as The Queen of Los Boliches, will soon be leaving the Costa del Sol. After 14 years on the coast Dodo will spread her wings, or in this case probably a pair of her famous spectacles, for a rekindled life with her family on the windswept Isle of Man. The Dodo was a bird that was famous for not being able to fly, so in keeping with correct evolutionary practices “Her Majesty” will travel in style by road and seafaring vessel only.

Our Dodo – as the uninitiated may now have guessed – is what is known as a local character. One of several proprietors of a former entertainment venue known as The Brigg in Los Boliches, her humorous shows with fast and sometimes outrageous costume changes put her and her many musical

cronies firmly on the map for having “a good night out in Los Boliches”. Pre-crisis and long gone The Brigg was a hit, with just as many characters off the stage as on it – a regular meeting point for those with a sense of humour. Dodo sold her famous pub and pulled her last pint in The Brigg on Thursday 22nd July 2004 but did not sing her last song. She continued to compère and entertain there Monday to Thursday and later in other local venues sometimes as the other half of the Mishaps Duo.

As a many thanks and final, fare-thee-well dear friends, there will be a little bit of a do with a song or two from “Her Majesty” at

the Bell and Bottle pub on Friday 1st November. The Bell is just down the street from her now closed but once famous watering hole on Calle Poeta Salvador Rueda behind the Confortel Hotel in Los Boliches.

Desperate appeal by PAD This week I am not running the Pet Of The Week article that usually appears in this space as I have had a letter from Lisa Emeny, President of the animal charity PAD, telling me that they are in imminent danger of closure if they don’t get help. And get it fast!

This is what the charity has to say: “The Mijas Costa based animal charity P.A.D (Protección de Animales Domesticos) is, once again, facing a crisis situation and is appealing for urgent help to reduce the number of animals in their care. President Lisa Emeny explained: “We, like many animal charities, have been struggling for some time because demand for our services has increased whilst our income has dropped dramatically.

“We urgently need to reduce the number of animals we are currently looking after which, in turn, will reduce our running costs. At the moment we have 180 cats

and 35 dogs who desperately need to be rehomed. I would ask anyone who is able to offer a home to one of these beautiful animals to please visit the shelter.”

Lisa further explained, “We have been limiting the number of new animals that come in to the shelter for some time now and reducing our costs wherever possible but we have now reached crisis point."

The shelter can be found behind the Canes vet on the road to the Hipodromo which is at the back of the Miramar shopping centre. The

shelter is open between 10am and 2pm and 3pm to 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am and 2pm at weekends.

For more information about P.A.D visit www.padcatsanddogs.org or telephone the shelter for dogs on 952 469 254 or 689 757 216 and for cats 952 468 054 or 689 757 580.

So, if you you can find space in your home and heart for one of their animals that need a new home, log on, turn up or phone them and go meet your new best friend. written by Kym Wickham

New lake a danger to local citizens?

A local avocado grower is, in the opinion of the writer of this article, risking the lives and health of local residents by apparently illegally building a gigantic water store of inadequate design and in a very precarious location on the side of the mountain known as the Sierra Espartales. He intends to use the water to irrigate avocados at the expense of residents and small local farmers. Ballesteros is an area opposite Alhaurin el Grande which to the north slopes up the mountain towards Cartama. The predominant crops grown there since Roman times have been olives, figs and almonds, all require poor water supplies. For six weeks heavy machinery, normally seen on road construction, has been creating an earth dam on two sides of a rectangle covering over one hectare. At the highest point, the most vulnerable part is over fifteen metres above natural earth levels. The area for water storage behind the dam has been sculpted to a capacity of at least 15 million litres. The intention is to seal the area with Polybutyle liners. This liner type is commonly found in garden ponds but locals fear it will provide no protection in the event of fracture caused by seismic activity, which is frequent and, for this reason building regulations require special construction methods. Will compacted earth be adequate to resist such forces? In the event of catastrophic failure the vast amount of water weighing 15,000 tonnes will run down the natural slope and inundate a number of houses. The recent tragedy near Alora has shown that drowning and huge damage can result. The land owner has stated that he will fill the store from his existing seven wells, all of which are in the Alhaurin el Grande rural area. He claims that this will have no effect on other well users. Even if the wells are legal there is a modest limit on what can be taken and an absolute ban on further well drilling.

Health hazard

In addition to the real danger of drowning and damage from flooding, as well as water shortages, there will be a major health hazard created by the huge and inevitable colonies of mosquitoes. Global

warming is resulting in the spread north of Malaria mosquitoes and these could thrive here. There is also the visual impact on an until now well cared for area, with property values likely to be severely affected. Spanish people are increasingly aware of the importance to be attached to the visual side of the countryside and its positive effects on the local economy. This ‘blot on the landscape’ is counterproductive.

Denucias

Denuncias have been issued by several people at Alhaurin el Grande and Cartama Ayuntamientos, where officials have shown real concern. However this has failed to stop the rock and earth moving. Local police from Cartama have been told by the owner that he has a licence, however council searches have allegedly revealed this to be untrue. Apparently the only (obsolete) licence found to have been issued was for agricultural activity and not major earth work construction. When interviewed the owner of the land claimed that his new storage will be for additional tree planting. His eleven year old existing orchards with over 2,000 trees have never cropped commercially and professional gardeners recognise the signs of severe water and nutrition shortages. The trees occupy substantially less than the minimum ground area recommended by world experts and do not have sufficient soil depth. The area is known for its low average rainfall. Alhaurin el Grande receives on average 220 litres per square metre of rain per annum. Due to the prevailing wind pattern the Ballesteros region opposite, receives closer to 150 litres per year. Desert conditions are officially close to 125 l.p.a. or less. The owner was either foolish or ignorant in planting avocados in the first place. The next step will be to consider action at a higher level, leading to the equivalent of a judicial review. This article was written by a concerned neighbour who wishes to remain anonymous and is not necessarily the opinion of The News and its staff.

New British Ambassador to Spain As of last Monday 28th October, Simon Manley CMG, replaced Giles Paxman as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain and the non-resident Ambassador to Andorra.

Mr Manley said he was delighted to be here and looked forward to building and strengthening Britain’s trade relationship with Spain. He also highlighted the importance of the British citizens in Spain, saying “More than 13 million Britons visit Spain every year, generating 1 per cent of Spain’s GDP. Some 800,000 have made Spain their home permanently or for part of the year, and the UK remains the largest foreign investor in Spain’s property market. I’m impressed by how the British Consulates across Spain work with Spanish partners to do an excellent job of assisting British nationals.” Mr Manley has been a member of the UK’s diplomatic service since 1990 and is a man of considerable experience. Prior to his posting to Madrid, he was the

Director Europe at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) from 2011 to 2013. From 2008 to 2011 he served as the FCO’s Director Defence and Strategic Threats, leading the Government’s international counterterrorist, counterproliferation and counternarcotics efforts. From 2006 to 2008 he was the head of Counter-Terrorism Policy and from 2002 to 2006 the head of the EU Economic, Central Europe and Ireland department. Prior to that he held a string of other similar government positions.

As a student he read modern history at Magdalen College, Oxford and international relations at Yale University Graduate School. He is a family man and married to Maria Isabel Fernandez Utges Manley who is an intellectual property, competition and regulatory lawyer. They have three daughters – aged 13, 12 and 5. Special this week at Buzby’s Tonight sees the return of Jack Daniels to Buzby’s fun pub on Avenida Antonio Machado in Benalmadena.

Buzby’s owner Terry Tollan says: “Jack Daniels represents the voice and comedy of Wales and he’s back for one night only. His last appearance at Buzby’s took our audience by storm and a standing ovation was given at the end of Jack’s act.” Terry adds: “Jack is one of the funniest fellas that has come over from Blighty in a long time. His comedy

content and timing is second to none and oh boy (or should that be “oh boyo”) his voice is top dollar. What a great man he is both off and on stage. This is your chance to see Jack, one of the best comedians to come to the coast in a long time, on the 30th October ... that’s Tonight!” The show will be compered by Mad Terry himself and will be followed by El-Tel with karaoke until late. Portugal and his topic is “Tree Shaping”. This is a new subject for us and we look forward to seeing what he has achieved in his own garden and in the gardens of friends.

Firstly, he studies the way the plants have been swept into a pattern by the wind or have simply grown in a certain way, coaxed by the sun. He then shapes them to produce some stunning effects.

We look forward to his Power Point presentation and will certainly get some ideas to use on our own trees and shrubs.

Afterwards we will have a short members’ Question and Answer time, when we can get help and hints from some of the more experienced gardeners in the Club.

The Andalucian Garden Group also have a very extensive library from which members can borrow books each month. Visitors are always very welcome and if you want to just come for a particular talk, the fee for one meeting is €5. The meetings provide a great opportunity to make new friends and pick up some gardening hints.

New to the coast - Zorba’s Greek Taverna You know when you go out for a meal and come away thinking that it was one of those memorable evenings? Well, we had such an evening last Saturday.

When we lived in Ealing, West London some 17 years ago we were spoilt for choice with every kind of restaurant you could think of within

walking distance – including three excellent Greek restaurants that I’d been going to since I was a child. I love Greek food and have been trying to find a half-way decent place to get it ever since coming to Spain on a permanent basis. No offence to the Greek restaurants we’ve tried that have been run by Spanish people but, they

just don’t seem to be able to produce the high quality I was used to.

Now, however, there’s Zorba’s at the bottom of the Calahonda strip who have cracked it!

For starters we each chose a “meze” which is a bit like a selection of Tapas. Each meze consisted of three different dishes so we had Baba Ganouch (a dip based on aubergines), Taramasalata (the wonderful pink cod’s roe dip), Dolmades of which there is a choice of vegetarian or non-veggie, Lountza – pork marinated in red wine, and Sheftalia – spicy meatballs served with Tzatziki that is a Greek yoghurt, garlic, cucumber and mint dip. All these came with warm pitta bread to scoop everything up with. The meze starter costs €7.95 a head.

For the main courses we went for Klefticon – a slow cooked beautifully fall-off-the-bone tender shoulder of lamb (which I have to say was huge!) with Greek potatoes and mediterranean style vegetables at €13.95 – and Afelia, which is Pork tenderloin pan fried with white wine and coriander seeds that you can have accompanied by either vegetables or rice for €12.95.

For desert – if you have any room at all left – you can choose from Baclava or a honey cheesecake.

The weather on Saturday night was monsoon-like but, was it worth the trip? You bet it was ... this is a new restaurant that should be a roaring success.

Zorba’s owner, Kevin says: “ This new Taverna offers customers something new to Calahonda with its tastefully reformed decor and traditional Greek menu offering a large selection of starters and main course meals all freshly prepared and cooked to order. We opened two weeks ago and we did have a problem with customers having to wait too long for their food and running out of some items on the menu. But the feedback from the customers about the food was almost faultless and the same customers have come back again. We open six nights a week, closed Thursdays, from 6.30 to 11.30pm. We are now taking party bookings for the run up to Christmas and New Year. The Taverna seats 32 inside and 16 outside and we can cater for any events.” For more information and to book your table call 633 197 846. It is a moment when you are required to be patient, although that is not your strongest quality, you will have to dig deep this week. You really want things to move quicker but if you push too hard too fast sometimes it can backfire on you. Use your skill and precision to outsmart and impress others. Financial opportunities are likely by the weekend. You are in the midst of a huge turning point in your life and it all hangs on your partnerships and ability to communicate with others. More than ever you are required to walk tall and take the high moral ground as well as allowing others to shine just as brightly as you. Challenges are likely during the week and you may have to act as nurse to someone close but the weekend promises a celebration. There could be a tendency right now particularly with Mercury your ruling planet being in retrograde motion to make things more complicated than they are. If you tell your brain to be quiet you will be surprised as how much easier things are to deal with, the key this week is unpredictability – nothing seems to happen as you ‘think’ it will. Keep it simple.

Change is about to happen and when it does all eyes will be looking at you, everybody wants to know what you plan to do next and how you are going to do it. The thing is they will expect you to know and actually you probably do, others can talk the talk but it is you who must walk the walk. Future travel and new acquaintances entering your life are likely.

If you can be honest with yourself then you are on the right foot. Over enthusiasm may have caught you in a tizzy lately and you may experience some delays due to a mistake that could have occurred. The good news is the result will allow you to be more adaptable and flexible in your choices and options, keep down to earth and you will reach the heights.

Focus on the facts this week and double check everything as you are prone to jump to conclusions, sometimes it is better to listen first and speak later. Pay closer attention to what is going on around you and then misunderstandings regarding another’s motivations are less likely to occur. There are unexpected rewards coming your way – perhaps an item you have longed to have for a while.

This is not the time to allow the disappointments of the past to slow you down or cause you to turn away, remain open to new ideas and suggestions. A chain of events could occur and you will find yourself very busy, in fact a lot happens at once. Trust your instincts and listen to yourself, take action and get things done so the decks are clear. Be prepared.

Take time out for a bit of rest and relaxation, the world is not going to fall apart if you take it easy for a few hours and you owe it to yourself to give yourself some pamper time. Pay attention if you are signing any agreements or instructions make sure you read the small print. Next week things will start falling into place and you will see a bigger picture starting to emerge.

There are some tough personal choices you could have to make shortly about the direction your life is going in. As soon as you do others will rally behind you and support you in your venture. New partnerships are a possibility as are romantic liaisons too. Things have a way of working out in your favour and you have a little bit of lady luck shining down on you too.

Your entire life circumstances can change in the blink of an eye, so make sure you are in the game in the first place, the kind of pattern occurring now is likely to remind you that hard work does pay off and rewards do happen. This can be an emotional time and you could find that you let your frustrations loose on an innocent bystander.

You can at the moment obtain just about anything you set your mind too as your powers of observation and calculation are incredibly on the ball. Verify all facts and figures and take nothing at face value, as there could be more going on behind the scenes than you are aware. Delays could occur with transport so make sure you give yourself enough time to get places.

If there is something being hidden it will soon be revealed, this will be a time to take some things with a pinch of salt and all isn’t what it appears. Temptations will be all around you inviting you to be led astray, however, keep focused and rewards, abundance and joy are on their way – even if it isn’t apparent yet. The solutions to a domestic issue is likely to work itself out on its own by 2nd November, so try not to worry too much.

Poder

WEDNESDAY, October 30th 2013

Poder as a noun means Power. Poderoso means powerful. There is a proverb : Poderoso caballero es Don Dinero which means literally that Mr. Money is a powerful gentleman. Or we might say Money talks. Poder as a verb has a number of meanings mainly linked with being able to do something. ¿Puedo ayudarte? Can I help you? ¿Puedes ayudarme? Can you help me? No puedo más - I can't take any more. No puedo hablar el español muy bien todavía - I can't speak Spanish very well yet. Desde mi patio podemos ver el mar - From my patio we can see the sea. Poder can also mean something is or isn't allowed. No se puede fumar en el cine - Smoking isn't allowed in the cinema Puedes tomarte un descanso - You can take a break. Él puede hacer lo que quiera - He can do what he wants. Ella no puede comer sal - She can't eat salt. To ask permission one uses ¿Se puede? Which in English would be May I? And to finish off, another wee proverb – Querer es poder - To want to is to be able. We would probably say – Where there's a will there's a way. Ya está - That's it Hasta la próxima. Valerie

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

How do I know what type of skin I have? Sheila, Mijas Dear Sheila,

There are four main types of skin and two that can apply to them:

1. Oily skin tends to be shiny with enlarged pores and is prone to blackheads and blemishes. 2. Normal skin has a smooth even texture with medium to small pores.

3. Combination skin has parts as above, but tends to dryness on cheeks and oiliness on the T-zone. 4. Dry skin feels tight,

especially if you don't use an appropriate cleanser, it is prone to flaking and red patches; fine lines and wrinkles show up early. Dark skins may also appear ashy.

All of the above may also be sensitive, the skin is thin and delicate with fine pores, flushes easily, may have broken capillaries, can break out in rashes, and frequently shows an allergic reaction.

All skin types can suffer with ageing or sun damage. This manifests itself with a rough, dry texture with visible wrinkles, slackening and brown spots. Dear Sue,

How do I get rid of

HOLA!

pregnancy pigmentation marks on my face? Lucy, Coin

Dear Lucy,

Pigmentation is very common and not easy to treat but it can be minimised and disguised. Use any pigmentation removing products with supervision from a qualified beauty therapist, and only on the pigmented parts, not the rest of your face or you will lighten that leaving the pigmentation looking darker. Sunlight will darken the patches so a total sun block even in winter is essential. When applying makeup use a concealer that is three shades lighter than your foundation to cover them, wait until it is dry and then

use the foundation. Around nine months to a year after giving birth the hormones start to settle so if you have covered up in the sun during this period a certain amount of fading should take place naturally. Dear Calvin,

I have started to get dandruff since living here. Is it the water that is so hard? What can I do about it? Madeleine, Mijas Costa Dear Madeleine,

Are you sure it is dandruff that you have? Dandruff and dry scalp are often confused. Dandruff's appearance tends to be lumps of skin, yellowish in colour and often sticky with

Dear Julie,

I am guessing that your hair is fine. Fine hair retains more moisture than other hair. When shampooing your hair make sure the water temperature is lukewarm. Hot water encourages the sebaceous glands to overwork when conditioning the hair. I find a spray leave-in conditioner works best as this is more directional and can be applied to the ends only without touching the roots. Another alternative is to use a dry shampoo, this will absorb some of the grease.

Fat pledge 'a drop in the ocean' A pledge by food manufacturers to cut saturated fat levels is "a drop in the ocean" in the fight against obesity, Professor John Ashton, president of the Faculty of Public Health, has said. Morrisons, Subway and Nestle are among firms signed up to the voluntary "responsibility deal" between industry and government, but Professor Ashton said the approach "lacked credibility". Other firms which are cutting saturated fat or have pledged to do so include Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi and Mondelez International – which will alter products including its Oreo biscuits. Professor Ashton said it was "a good thing" but the pledge did not go far enough: "They need to ensure that at the same time they lower the sugar and salt that they have

used to make foods more tasty as a result of lowering the fat content." He added: "It's a drop in the ocean in comparison with the scale of the obesity crisis."

The Department of Health (DoH) recommend that men should eat no more than 30g of saturated fat a day, and women no more than 20g. The British Dietetic Association said most people eat about 20% more than the recommended maximum levels, while a survey of 2,000 people found 84% did not know how much saturated fat was a healthy amount.

The DoH said cutting the amount of saturated fat in people's diets by 15% could prevent around 2,600 premature deaths every year from conditions such as heart disease and stroke.

Singer, composer, poet and icon of the ´60s Lou Reed dies at the age of 71

No more walking on the wild side

… but we bet he’s still doing it with the angels in heaven or having a whale of a time down below! Despite undergoing a liver transplant in May this year, legendary singer, poet and songwriter Lou Reed died on Sunday morning in New York, aged 71. He lived in the Southampton area of New York with his wife of just five years, Laurie Anderson. Best known for his songs A Walk On The Wild Side, that was to be his only top 20 hit, and Satellite Of Love and being part of the band Velvet Underground along with Welsh musician John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker in the 60s, Lewis Allan “Lou” Reed was born in Brooklyn in 1942. He was the son of an accountant The band caught artist Andy Warhol's attention who used them in his Exploding Plastic Inevitable. "Andy would show his movies on us," Reed once said. "We wore black so you could see the movie. But we were all wearing black anyway." Many other songs became standards among his admirers, from Heroin and Sweet Jane to Pale Blue Eyes and All Tomorrow's Parties. Perfect Day went on to be covered by a host of stars for a charity single. He won a Grammy in 1999 for Best Long Form Music Video, had his writings

published in The New Yorker, and even performed at The White House. He moved to England to be a solo artist in the 1970s and worked with David Bowie among others. Another song Perfect Day - was covered by a host of stars for a charity single. In a tribute to the singer, Rolling Stone magazine said he "fused street-level urgency with elements of European avant-garde music, marrying beauty and noise, while bringing a whole new lyrical honesty to rock & roll poetry". During his career as a solo artist, from the 1970s into the 2010s, he was "chameleonic, thorny and unpredictable", it said, adding: "Glam, punk and alternative rock are all unthinkable without his revelatory example. 'One chord is fine,' he once said, alluding to his bare-bones guitar style. 'Two chords are pushing it. Three chords and you're into jazz.'" He hated school, loved rock 'n' roll, fought with his parents and attacked them in song for forcing him to undergo electroshock therapy as a supposed "cure" for being bisexual. "Families that live out in the suburbs often make each other cry," he later wrote.

Lennon house for sale Jackson Dr freed John Lennon’s childhood Newcastle Road, Liverpool, 3 bedroom home where he lived with his grandparents until the age of five went up for auction last night (Tuesday) at the famous Cavern Club. Auctioneers put a price tag on it of between £150,000 and £250,000 and said they had interest in the property, that is still visited by Beatles fans, from all around the world.

The house has two reception rooms and a kitchen downstairs and three bedrooms and a bathroom on the upper floor plus a walled “back yard” outside. The current owners had decided to sell it by auction as they had no idea, because of the property’s history, what to put it on the open market for.

Stephen Giddins from Entwistle Green estate agents said: "It's very difficult to put a price on a house like this because you don't know what

Conrad Murray has been released from jail two years after being convicted of causing Michael Jackson's death. The doctor, 60, left a jail in central Los Angeles shortly after midnight local time, the sheriff's office said.

someone who is a huge Beatles fan will be prepared to pay to live in John Lennon's former home. We've had interest from across the whole of the UK and we've got at least a couple of people wanting to bid from the United States over the telephone." Mr Giddins said among those he has shown round the house since it's been on the market was John Lennon's half-sister, Julia Baird. "She wasn't looking at the house with a view to buying it, she was just really keen to come and see the house to remind herself of the time that she lived here. She referred to the fact that the back bedroom was John's bedroom, her parents were in the room next door and her grandparents slept in the main front bedroom. She recalls there were always lots of children playing in the alley out the back of the house and how they made a swing in their backyard for all their friends to play on." The current owner told

the Liverpool Echo: "I'll be sad to leave John Lennon's first home but I am retired now and would really like a property with a bigger garden. I have made sure original features have been preserved so that they reflect the 1960s period, when the Beatles wowed the whole world with their rock and roll music. The main structure of the house and features, such as the original Victorian sliding sash windows, are as they were when John Lennon lived here with his parents and his grandparents from 1940 onwards."

"He was elated to be out of there," Murray's lawyer Valerie Wass said. Ms Wass said he plans to spend time with his girlfriend and children and to readjust to life outside prison.

Murray was convicted in 2011 of involuntary manslaughter in respect of 50-year-old Jackson's death in June 2009. The pop superstar died after receiving a lethal dose of the anaesthetic Propofol, which Murray was giving

him as a sleeping aid.

Murray was given a four-year sentence, but a change in California law to ease chronic overcrowding in the state's jails allowed him to be freed early. Murray's medical licences have been suspended or revoked in three states where he had previously practised medicine.

It has been reported he is seeking to hire a publicist and also have his medical licences reinstated.

News of his release is likely to upset Jackson's family and the star's multitude of fans around the world. Some of them waited at the prison but the doctor managed to elude them.

The Top Gear presenter embarks on the ultimate engineering project, to explore the science behind the building of an entire Earth-like world, viewing his CGI planet from the top of a two-mile-high tower in the California desert. Along the way he embarks on various experiments, from floating in zero gravity at the edge of space to visiting the laboratory where they make a sun in a box, to reveal the processes involved in piecing together his planet. Next week, Hammond goes even bigger as he creates an entire universe.

Opinion Alh. el Grande

Beverley Saunders

Re Terence Davies' article about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. I am aghast that anyone can be so callous and unfeeling. Yes, Kate and Gerry made a mistake, a grievous mistake in leaving the children alone, especially when babysitters were available.

However, has he never been irresponsible in the care of his children – if he has children? I have, e.g. left my baby sleeping in his pram outside my house. Everyone did in the eighties, but that is no excuse. There were undesirables then just as there are now and I could so easily have found myself in the McCann's nightmare scenario couldn't I? But for the

grace of God go I! And what about you, the reader? I'm sure we have all done irresponsible things that could have resulted in the harm or disappearance of our children.

The point is, Kate and Gerry are missing their beautiful daughter! They, and Madeleine, who may or may not be alive, have suffered terribly. You only have to look at Kate's face to see the terrible toll it has taken.

Furthermore, they have done all they possibly can to find her. People have not always been sympathetic towards them. They were even suspected of killing her at one time! But that, and

Jane Sharp I whole heartedly agree with Terence Davies’ letter. These people were negligent. They could well have afforded to pay for a

what people like Terence Davis thinks doesn't matter to them. In fact nothing matters apart from the search for Madeleine. Let's hope after the botch-up of the Portuguese investigation she will now be found alive.

Editor says: The letter from Terence Davies published last week has brought about a string of replies, most of which agree with him and the rest vehemently disagreeing with his sentiments about the treatment of the parents of Madeleine McCann. It is true that to lose a child in such circumstances must be horrrendous but, I wonder if we’ll ever find out what happened to this little girl?

child minder, but why not take their children with them? Portugal, like all Mediterranean countries welcome children in bars

Frances Newman I agreed wholeheartedly with the brilliant letter from Terence Davies in this week's News. As soon as the news broke on that awful day my daughter and I said "There is a brilliant baby-sitting service at that complex – why didn't the parents

San Pedro

arrange to have their very small children cared for whilst they were out for a jolly evening OFF the premises?" They should indeed have been charged with child neglect and I think that the Portuguese police probably thought so too. It wouldn't help anything now of course, and I would imagine that the McCanns have been riddled with guilt since their daughter's disappearance. We can only hope that there will be a happy outcome to this dreadful situation and that Madeleine will be found well and happy – but of course if this is the case, what would be the correct way to decide the little girl's future ? Editor says: The letter last week, as I said above has brought a great deal of reaction both for and against what was said in it and it’s very interesting to read people’s reactions. One person said to me

after reading it last week: “Thank God somebody’s got the guts to say what most of us think about those parents. If it had been the kid of some poor people in a council house, they’d have been taken to court years ago for neglect. The only reason they haven’t is because of what they do for a living and the fact that they’ve shouted loud enough to get all the publicity.” There seems to be quite a bit of anymosity towards the McCanns and I wonder who will decide what happens to Madeleine if she is ever found. Will she have to go back to her parents even if she’s been brought up properly by whoever’s got her? Maybe they thought they’d taken her on legitimately, perhaps through some unknowingly dodgy adoption agency. It will be quite an interesting outcome and, perhaps, they will have the good sense to let the child decide and not hysterical parents.

Partial Eclipse of The Sun

A

There will be a partial eclipse of the Sun on Sunday morning which will be visible from Spain.

n eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun. By pure coincidence the Sun is 400 times bigger than the Moon but is 400 times further away so the Sun and the Moon appear as exactly the same size in the sky.

B

binocular projection image of Sun on screen

ut because the Moon doesn’t go around the Earth in a true circle – it is an ellipse shape – then at times the Moon is closer to the Earth (perigee) making it appear larger than the Sun and at other times the Moon can be further from the Earth (apogee) and so appear smaller than the Sun. If an eclipse occurs when the Moon is at apogee then it won’t completely cover the Sun’s disc, instead it will leave a ring of sunlight surrounding it. When this happens the eclipse is known as an Annular eclipse.

S

unday’s eclipse will occur just on the border so that the Sun and Moon are a perfect fit. But of course the Earth is round and so the point where the eclipse first strikes the Earth is a few thousand miles further away than when the eclipse is dead centre with the Earth. This will create a Hybrid Eclipse. Areas at the first and last points of the eclipse will witness an annular eclipse, then as the shadow progresses across the bulging Earth the Moon will appear to grow in size until it is just about big enough to cover the whole Sun for a total eclipse.

A

mazingly the point at where the eclipse will become total is slap bang dead centre of the Earth at Latitude 0° Longitude 0°. This is a point on the equator in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. I have checked with records and I can’t find another instance of this happening!

B

ecause the Moon’s shadow only covers a tiny fraction of the Earth you have to be standing directly beneath it to witness a total eclipse. Just a few miles north or south of the line of totality and the Moon will appear to ‘miss’ the Sun and so a partial eclipse will be seen.

D

uring Sunday’s eclipse, southern Spain falls just within the partial eclipse area, the Moon

binoculars

will just clip the lower third of the Sun. People in the UK will see nothing at all. On 20th March 2015 a total eclipse will pass just north of Britain and most of the British Isles will experience a partial eclipse of up to about 95%.

Y

ou may wonder why an eclipse doesn’t occur every time that the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth. The Moon orbits the Earth on a slight tilt so most times when the Moon is new it passes either above or below the Sun. If the Moon orbited the Earth on a perfect line then every 28 days there would be an eclipse. Eclipses are a lot more frequent than you would think – on average there will be a solar eclipse somewhere on the Earth every 18 months. But it is estimated that they recur at any given place only once every 350 years or so.

I C

f you are living on the Costa del Sol on August 2nd 2027 then sit on your patio and watch as a total eclipse will pass directly overhead. AUTION: NEVER STARE DIRECTLY AT THE SUN! There are a few safe ways to see the eclipse. Personally I use the glass from a welder’s mask to look at the Sun. They are very cheap to buy and offer good protection. Sunglasses will not do! If you have binoculars or a telescope then point them at the Sun and let the light fall onto a piece of white card held behind them (see picture above). Or try making a pin-hole camera from a box with a small hole in the front and a sheet of white paper taped to the rear and allow the image of the Sun to fall onto the paper.

T

he eclipse will begin at 11.50 and end at 13.20 local time.

Happy Stargazing.

Lorenzo sets up final race showdown Jorge Lorenzo produced one of the finest rides of his career to take Yamaha's 200th victory in the premier MotoGP category at Motegi, Japan, and keep his title battle alive at Honda's own circuit. Despite starting from pole position, after coming out on top after a wet qualifying session on Saturday, Lorenzo was concerned at the Honda's speed in morning practice, when RCVs filled four of the top five places. The Spaniard then made the late decision to go with Bridgestone's softer rear tyre in the race and set about taking advantage of the added grip at the start, building up a one-second gap over Marquez in the first two laps.Marquez and Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa however soon closed in, shadowing Lorenzo throughout the first half of the race. It seemed it was only a matter of time until Lorenzo would be relegated to third.

Lorenzo though had other ideas, and with Marquez on his tail the Yamaha rider set the fastest time of the race on lap 16 and proceeded to consistently gap his Championship rival until the end, crossing the line 3.5secs clear at the close of 24 laps. After the race a jubilant Lorenzo remarked: “Looking at free practice the first three

Vettel joins the greats riders were Hondas. That means this track is normally better for them, so winning here at Honda's circuit – as well as the 200 victories for Yamaha, and winning after taking so many risks with the tyre – is a pleasure. It has been a really hard race physically but I kept my concentration and I really wanted this victory.” Speaking of his late switch to the extra soft rear tyre he stated: “We made the decision late on, because just before the race the temperature was 10 degrees warmer than in morning practice and I felt better on the softer tyres. I think it was the right choice for me on the Yamaha but maybe for the Hondas they were better on a different tyre.”

The result means Lorenzo now sits 13 points behind Marquez with just one race remaining. It's only the second time in 21 years the championship has gone to the final round with the winner yet to be decided. The 26-year-old goes to Valencia knowing anything can happen.

“Until we finish racing we know the championship is not over,” he said. “I'm not the leading rider so it's not all up to me, so let's see how our strategy is at Valencia. I am the rider with the most victories in 2013 and that's very important.” Lorenzo now stands alongside Max Biaggi on 111 grand prix podiums. Only six riders have scored more in the history of the Championship.

Germany wins EU backing to block car emissions law European Union environment ministers agreed to German demands to scrap an agreement to cap average EU new-car emissions at 95 grams per kilometre in 2020 from about 130/g/km now after Berlin argued the target would cost jobs and damage its premium automakers. After months of forceful lobbying from Germany, the ministers from the 28 EU member states agreed recently to reopen a deal sealed in June, but said they would work to secure it in weeks, not months. German luxury carmakers Daimler and

BMW produce heavier and less fuel-efficient vehicles than those from volume automakers such as Italy's Fiat, meaning they would find it challenging to meet tougher CO2 targets. EU governments and the European Parliament had agreed in June a 95g/km target. The target is equivalent to fuel use of 4 litres per 100km (59 U.S. mpg/71 UK mpg). But Germany built a coalition of countries supporting its plan to delay the start of the emission curbs. It proposed the law should be fully applicable to all new cars only in 2024.

Sebastian Vettel has now firmly established himself as one of the greatest drivers in F1 history after wrapping up his fourth successive title with victory in the Indian Grand Prix. Vettel maintained his winning run at the Buddh International Circuit to ensure he added another championship crown to his already impressive resume, meaning he joins Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio and Alain Prost as only the fourth four-time champion. The German has won 10 races this season, including the last six. This time, he finished almost 30 seconds ahead of Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg.

"You've won it in style," Red Bull team principal Christian Horner told Vettel on the radio. "Brilliant stuff. You've joined the greats." Horner was also full of praise for the entire Red Bull Racing team after it wrapped up the 2013 F1 titles, the other being the constructors title. “There's going to be an awfully lot of happy people in Milton Keynes and Salzburg. We've got three races to go and we're just going to go for it.” said Horner.

Vettel performed donuts on the track before climbing from his car, acknowledging the crowd and kneeling with his head bowed. He then climbed the pit lane fence to embrace his team. Vettel was later reprimanded and Red Bull fined $34,500 by race stewards for the exuberant display. “I'm speechless,” Vettel said. “When I crossed the

line I was empty. I spent ages thinking about what I wanted to say as there is so much you want to say at a time like this.

“It's a pleasure to jump in the car and go out and drive for these guys and give it all I have. The car was phenomenal today and has been phenomenal all season. I couldn't have asked for more.”

Málaga suffer thrashing C.O.G.S. play at Málaga 0 - 5 Celta Vigo Calanova Golf After the expected defeat at the Bernabou last week it was back to La Roseleda for a must-win game for Málaga.

The team selection was again a matter of concern as coach Bernd Schuster changed the team around again looking for a better performance. In as early as the sixth minute it all went wrong for the home side, as their defence parted like the Red Sea to leave Lopez with time to stroke the ball into the Málaga net giving Caballero no chance. Málaga looked uneasy and lacking in confidence but a good move set Hamdaoui up – only for his mishit shot to be easily saved. On 23 minutes Celta were two up, Málaga's Antunes failed to deal with a crossed ball and this allowed Fernandez to fire

home. After half time Anderson and Morales came on for Málaga but failed to make any impact. After 64 minutes a Celta attack forced a good save from Caballero but the rebound was headed in by Lopez to make it three nil.

Seven minutes later a Celta break led to Nolito crashing the ball home from the edge of the box making it four nil. With the stadium emptying it was soon five to the away side – on 81 minutes another good Celta move was finished off by Madinda from close range to seal an incredible win for Celta. A crushing defeat for Málaga which leaves them hovering above the relegation zone, and, after the early optimism at the start of the season

Málaga's performances are of increasingly great concern.

Schuster has repeatedly shuffled the team and still doesn’t seem to know the best formation for Málaga. Polish under-21 player Pawlowski came on in the 85th minute, replacing Duda who has become an ineffective player for Málaga, with Camacho also proving the same. Hamdaoui and Santa Cruz look poor as an attacking force, as do most of the team at the moment. At press time Málaga are lining up at Espanyol, that will be a test, as will the Betis home game on Sunday night. Points must be taken ... and soon. Report by Scott Forbes.

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips Record $20m Prize at 2014 WSOP “Big One for One Drop” WSOP announced a second edition of its $1 million buy-in “Big One for One Drop” as part of the 2014 World Series of Poker Last week the World Series of Poker officially announced the return in 2014 of the biggest buy-in event in the history of the game: The $1m Big One for One Drop.

The inaugural “Big One” took place back in 2012. Poker pro Antonio Esfandiari defeated 47 other players, including Britain’s top player Sam Trickett in heads-up action, to take the $18.3m first prize. This one promises to be even bigger as the WSOP, in partnership with the One Drop Foundation charity, have increased the cap to allow 56 players to buyin. That means we could see a first prize exceeding $20m for the first time. It’s a prize that can only be matched in the world of sport by boxing.

Participation in the 2014 Big One is on a firstcome, first-served basis. The WSOP has banked its first $1m buy-in, as One Drop founder Cirque du Soleil creator Guy Laliberté (photo above) announced his place in the starting line up.

“It was a terrific first event in 2012 with One Drop raising nearly $5.3 million,” said Laliberté.

“There is still a lot of work to be done to ensure access to water for all. I have no doubt that the poker community will once again live up to its reputation for generosity by helping to transform lives sustainably.”

Since the organisation was formed in 2007, One Drop projects have changed the lives of more than 300,000 people around the world. Of the $48m in buy-in money in 2012, nearly $10m ended up in the hands of charities. Expect all of the biggest names in poker at this one including Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu and

reigning champion Esfandiari along with the UK’s Trickett and businessman Paul Newey.

The Big One for One Drop will take place over three days from June 29th to July 1st, 2014. The televised final table will be hosted at Caesar’s Palace. If you have any questions or wish to discuss any poker related subjects email: wayne@bolsa-fiesta.com,

Marbella fight odds to save face. MRC 17 - 32 Malaga.

Saturday saw highly experienced visitors Malaga come to Bahia to take on MRC in the league. This Derby meeting in the past has sometimes degenerated into a free- forall scrappy challenge, but this time saw two teams fighting hard for every play. Marbella, still building with novice and new players, took the game to Malaga in the first twenty minutes, only conceding an early drop goal, then for the next hour each team swapped tries keeping the game close. However, due to some inexperience from a couple of the team, Marbella lost two players due to technical fouls, sent off to the 'Sinbin' by the referee for ten minutes each, which gave the visitors the advantage break they needed to extend the score. It was undoubtedly another great performance from the ever growing MRC side even though they lost. Coach Allan davies reported, 'They are gaining valuable motivational team spirit and hard experience every week which will soon click to hopefully make them a very challenging side' and everyone agreed the performance did not merit the scoreline. Final score MRC 17-32 Malaga.

The seniors continue to grow and improve and anyone wishing to join the club socially or play for the team are asked to ring secretary Sarah (Spanish) on 692 061 982 or seniors coach Allan (English) on 672 137 547 for details.

Baseball World Series: Red Sox one win away

Boston Red Sox are only one victory away from winning the World Series for the third time in 10 years after beating the St Louis Cardinals 3-1 in Game 5 of the 2013 Fall Classic. The win, Boston's second in a row at the Cardinals' Busch Stadium, means they lead the series 3-2 and have to win just one of the final two games scheduled at their Fenway Park home.

Bale makes shortlist for Ballon d'Or.

World record signing Gareth Bale is on the 23-man shortlist for the Fifa men's world footballer of the year award. Wales forward Bale, 24, scored 26 goals for Tottenham last season before an £85m move to Real Madrid in the summer. Five Premier League players – Eden Hazard, Mesut Ozil, Luis Suarez, Yaya Toure and Robin van Persie have also been nominated for the Ballon d'Or. Barcelona's Lionel Messi will be looking to retain the award he has won for four years running.

Fernandez-Castano wins Shanghai Masters

Gonzalo FernandezCastano shot a final round of 68 to win the Shanghai Masters – his seventh European Tour victory. The Spaniard, 32, chipped in on 17 to lead by three shots at Lake Malaren, but a doublebogey at the last hole saw him finish one clear of Francesco Molinari and Thongchai Jaidee. Italian Molinari held the clubhouse lead on 10 under, but six birdies in 12 holes gave Fernandez-Castano victory. England’s Paul Casey finished four shots back, while Rory McIlroy was 10 shots adrift. "On the last I tried to play too conservative and it was a fighting double-bogey that's for sure," said Fernandez-Castano, who is moving to Florida this winter and playing mainly on the PGA Tour next season. "The win comes from some good hard work in Valderrama with my coaches last week and it has paid off." There was better news for Rory McIlroy on the

McIlroy plays in the WGC Champions event in Shanghai this week needing to qualify for the Race to Dubai. McIlroy acknowledged that he "needs a good week" on his return to Shanghai to make the top 60, who qualify for the Race to Dubai finale in two weeks' time.

McIlroy won both the tournament and the Order of Merit trophy last year, but his poor form in 2013 has left him currently 62nd in the standings and struggling to make the field. He was happy with his driving at the weekend and says it is his putting that needs to improve. "I feel my game's better than the scores suggest," he said after Sunday's oneover-par closing round of 73 in Shanghai.

"Instead of taking away some European (nations), we have to go to 40 teams in the World Cup," Platini told The Times. "We can add two African, two Asiatic, two American and one from Europe. I support this idea totally." The first World Cup in 1930 had 13 nations

competing, growing to 16 four years later and 24 in 1982, with the increase to the current 32 teams taking place in 1998. Europe has 13 slots in the current setup, while Africa has five and Asia four plus a play-off place. Platini's idea for 40 teams would see eight groups of five at the World Cup as opposed to the present structure of eight groups of four. Newcastle’s Tiote gets suspended sentence

A Premier League footballer has been given a suspended prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to possessing a fake driving licence. Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote admitted buying a fake Belgian licence for 15,000 euros (£12,800). Tony Hawks, prosecuting, said Tiote tried to use the fake document to apply for a UK driving licence from the DVLA. At Newcastle Crown Court, he was handed a seven-month sentence suspended for 18 months and 180 hours of unpaid work.

Man United's Darren Fletcher returns after illness

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher made his competitive return on Monday, playing 67 minutes of a 2-2 under-21 draw against Fulham. The 29year-old was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel condition, in December 2011. He has played only 13 matches since and has not featured in the first team since Boxing Day 2012. "I've been training for a few weeks and the next progression is some match time. I enjoyed it," Fletcher said. The support from the club has been fantastic, from Sir Alex Ferguson to the new manager and David Gill.

World Cup should be expanded says Platini Monday after the Shanghai Masters, when he beat Tiger Woods by one shot in an exhibition match in China. The Northern Ireland golfer shot a sixunder par round of 67 at the Mission Hills course in Hainan Island. It is the second time that McIlroy has edged the lucrative made-for-TV event in China, having also beaten Woods by one shot at Jinsha Lake last year.
