to the

Buchanan County Fair continues to grow!

The Fair is almost here again, and the board is busy making sure everything is ready for the busy week. We want to share some things to look forward to this year! When looking for this year’s concert, we were unable to book many acts point due to contract stipulations with other venues. We were faced with either getting a lower level concert than last year or raising our spending limit. We opted to raise our spending limit and bring in another great show for this year. We are excited to have our headlining concert be Chase Rice! The concert Saturday night, gates open at 6 PM. To put it in perspective Chris Cagle cost $25,000, Joe Nichols $55,000, and Chase Rice $95,000. That doesn’t include stage, sound, lights, or advertising. All totaled, our concert this year will cost around $150,000. Once again, the Deery Brothers Series Race is Wednesday night, Lucas Oil Pro Pulling truck and Tractor pull Thursday night, which is a national event and comes with a price tag of $30,000. Friday is the always popular Demo Derby. On the main grounds, enjoy rides from Second Generation Carnivals, FREE with $5 gate admission. Unfortunately last year, our carnival did not deliver the rides we were promised. This is why we increased our budget and contracted a better carnival this year. This year, there will be Fair food, 10 fully staffed rides, and many game trailers where you can show off your skills. You will also be able to enjoy Team Rock, extreme karate show, HiPockets Parade & Recycle Cycle, and a nationally known chainsaw artist. The total cost for all these events was $52,000, and you get to enjoy them for a mere $5 entry fee. There are many other events planned such as the pig wrestling, mud volleyball, cookout contest, pedal pull, many gardening attractions, photo contests, as well as all the livestock shows. So mark your calendars and come out and show your support July 6-9! The 15 board members have worked extremely hard over the last year to make sure that the Buchanan County Fair continues to make strides to be a Fair we can all be proud of. We know we have further to go, and the only thing holding us back is the financial burden of a bigger and better Fair. As you can see from the prices above, it has gotten extremly expensive to put on a county Fair, and the costs continue to rise. We look forward to seeing everyone again this year, Please come out and show your support and we will continue to improve our entertainment selections. Thank you, Buchanan County Fair Board: Nick Dennie, President; Matt Walthart, Vice President; Kelly Peyton, Treasurer; Bailey Dudley, Secretary; Julie Althaus, Darin Burco, Rob Dudley, Tina Kelly, Mark Merfeld, Jeff Mescher, Brian Prusator, Eric Ries, Paul Short, Fred Smock, Rick Wendling

Hi-Pockets Parade & Recycle Cycle

REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE in a RE-DICULOUS WAY! Big Cookie Decorating When the Recycle Cycle stops to perform, the environment lights Challenge up with action, sound and excitement. Kids and adults alike are encouraged to participate in any number of the on-board ecological activities. These games are broken up long enough for the Goofball Garbage Man to perform a show of juggling; balancing and stunts all using recovered trash and recycled humor. The Recycle Cycle is created entirely of reclaimed or recycled parts put to the task of educating and entertaining. It is a rolling lesson in the value of the environment and its resources delivered with fun and function. Watch the eyes light up and smiles broaden as this oddball auto cuts a colorful path through any Fair or festival. Richard Renner, crazy garbage man, will lead spectators through the wonderful world of trash and resources with wacky inventions, circus arts, music and interactive games. Through juggling and magic tricks with trash, special attention is made to show how our personal choices affect our environment. With a grin and a giggle, spectators will learn that they CAN make a difference by REducing, REusing and REcycling. Like every aspect of Richard’s improvisational insanity, audiences of one or one thousand will get personally involved, uncontrollably amused and ultimately amazed by a performer they simply must look up to! Hi-Pocket Parade & Recycle Cycle can be found throughout fairgrounds all day!

The Big Cookie Decorating Challenge is open to all Buchanan County K-6th and 7th-12th graders with a limit of one entry per person. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. Contact the Extension office by Friday, July 1 to let them know you will be participating in this contest. All cookies and decorations must be made by participant. No purchased or professionally decorated cookies permitted. Use your creativity, the sky is the limit! The size of cookie must be 12” or less. All decorations must be edible. The cookies must be placed on a firm disposable plate or piece of cardboard and sealed in a plastic bag. Put name on the bottom of plate or cardboard. Entries must be brought to the 4-H Exhibit Building by 4:30 PM Tuesday, July 5. The class will be judged based on creativity. Cookies will not be taste-tested. Exhibits will not be conference judged. A champion and reserve champion will be selected by a public vote during the week of Fair. Results will be available in the 4-H Building, Saturday, July 9. Entries are not eligible to advance to the Iowa State Fair.

Chainsaw artist Andy Klindt

During the Fair, there will be several opportunities to view the art of chainsaw carving by Andy Klindt. This is a fastgrowing form of art that combines the modern technology of the chainsaw with the ancient art of woodcarving.

Enjoy the Bill Riley Talent Show on July 9

The Bill Riley Talent Show will be held at the Buchanan County Fair at 4 PM on July 9. The 57th season of the Bill Riley Talent Search is underway with nearly 100 local shows scheduled across Iowa. Performers age 2-21 are competing for a chance to bring their talent to the Anne & Bill Riley Stage at the Iowa State Fair. Two performers from each show move on to the State Fair – one sprout act (ages 2-12) and one senior act (ages 13-21). The talent search has put Iowa’s young talent on stages across the state each summer since 1960. Nearly 100 local qualifying competitions are held across the state and winners advance to the State Fair competition, where there are seven days of preliminary competition for Sprouts (ages 2-12) and Seniors (ages 13-21), followed by the semi-finals and, ultimately, the selection of one Senior Champion. The Sprouts do not compete beyond the semi-finals, but perform in the Championship Show as Sprout Champions.

Picnic food safety IDPH reminds Iowans to grill safely This summer, Iowans will gather for picnics, cookouts, and family get-togethers. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) cautions that some of those Iowans will become ill thanks to a food-borne illness. A food-borne illness is any illness caused by eating contaminated food or water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that each year, 76 million Americans get sick, more than 300,000 are taken to the hospital, and 5,000 people die from food-borne illnesses. While some food-borne illnesses can be deadly, most that occur in Iowa don’t last long (one to three days), and go

away on their own. Most of the things that cause food-borne illnesses aect the digestive tract and symptoms generally include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Especially during warmer weather, food safety begins at the grocery store. “When shopping, buy cold foods like meat, poultry and dairy products last, right before checkout,â€? said IDPH Medical Director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. “Plan to drive directly home from the grocery store so the food doesn’t sit in a hot car any longer than necessary. You may also want to take a cooler with ice or insulated grocery bags to transport perishables home – especially if your drive home is more than half an hour.â€? Once home, place cold foods like meat, poultry and dairy products in the refrigerator right away. To make sure you, your family, and friends have a healthy holiday, remember the following tips: • Cook all meats thoroughly, especially ground meats like hamburgers and sausages (like bratwursts). Use a meat thermometer to ensure the middle of the meat has reached a temperature that will kill the organisms that can make us sick. Cook chicken to 165°F, ground meats like hamburger to 160°, and whole meats like steaks or pork chops to 145°. • Marinate foods in the refrigerator – not on the kitchen counter or outdoors. In addition, if planning to use some of the marinade as a sauce on the cooked food, set aside a portion before adding the raw meat, poultry, or seafood. Don’t reuse marinade, as this can re-contaminate the food. • Cook thoroughly and immediately after “partial cooking.â€? If partially cooking food in the kitchen to reduce grilling time, do so immediately before the food goes on the hot grill. • Keep cold food cold and hot food hot. Whether in a car or on the picnic table, illness-causing bacteria can grow in many foods within two hours and during warmer weather, that time is cut down to within one hour. • Don’t reuse platters or utensils. Using the same platter or utensils that previously held raw meat, poultry, or seafood allows bacteria from the raw food’s juices to spread to the cooked food. Instead, have a clean platter and utensils ready at grill-side to serve your food. • Have a way to wash hands prior to eating. For example, if picnicking, bring soap and water or hand wipes so everyone can clean their hands before eating.
