Buffalo Bells 4-H Club looks back on a busy winter By Bethany Cook, Kayla Dudley, Lauren and Lindsay Beyer

“The Buffalo Bells have had an eventful winter to say the least!” said Jayme Beyer, co-leader of the Buffalo Bells 4-H club. “Our officer team has met monthly outside of our normal meeting time to discuss and plan activities and meetings. They have worked hard to ensure the club has had fun activities for everyone!” Club officers are President Jaci Francois, Vice President Becca Walthart, Secretary Natalie Svoboda and Treasurer Emma Kress. On Jan. 10, a few members held a brief meeting and then went sledding at the Keith and Jill Wilgenbusch farm. “Those that braved the wind and cold had an awesome time!” said Beyer. The Bells helped at two Buchanan County Fair Association fish fries in January to help raise money for the fair and fairgrounds. Members served food, carried plates, cleaned tables, and assisted the fair board members. Members gathered Feb. 21 to go ice skating at the Cedar Rapids ice arena. “Everyone had a great time learning to skate!” said Beyer. At the March 6 meeting, members discussed presentation topics. Jaci demonstrated a wrestling cheer as a sample presentation. Recreation leaders Lauren Beyer, Charli Sherman and Keeley Kehrli ended the meeting with a fun activity for members.

The Bells helped at the Breakfast with the Easter Bunny event on March 19 to help raise funds for fairground improvements. “We took money, assisted the Easter Bunny in visiting attendees and hiding Easter eggs,” said Beyer. “The weather has not been favorable to many of our events; despite that, we’ve had a great time!” Presentation day was April 3, with 16 Bells giving presentations. “Congratulations to all of the members as they did an outstanding job!” said Beyer. “A huge thank you to all that helped the day be a success.” Topics included craft demonstrations, how to show different animals, making cookies, and even how to do a cartwheel. “If you are interested in 4-H and are looking for a club, we would love for you to join us!” said Beyer. To learn more, contact leaders Beyer at 563-920-2580 or Andrea Svoboda. The Buffalo Bells’ next adventure is their annual field trip on April 16, which will include jumping at Sky Zone. Living Well with Buchanan County Health Center Ready, Set, Stretch! You feel you have the perfect workout routine: You head to the gym. You spend half your time on the treadmill and the other half lifting weights. You go home. Perfect? Most of us are aware of the importance of incorporating both cardiovascular and strength activities into our workouts. However, exibility training is often neglected, yet is just as important. There are three main elements to any ďŹ tness program, which include cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, and exibility. Flexibility is your body’s ability to move through a full range of motion. Flexibility training is about stretching the muscle groups you use during physical activity. Having a good exibility/stretching program as part of your daily workout routine can be beneďŹ cial to your body in numerous ways, including improved performance

and muscle coordination, reduced muscle tension and soreness, greater freedom of movement, improved posture, decreased risk of injury and low back pain, and improved blood circulation. Stretching cold muscles can cause injury, so always stretch after your body has “warmed up.â€? Follow these rules when performing exibility exercises: •Target large muscle groups. •Hold each stretch for a minimum of 1530 seconds. •Do not bounce. Perform slow, static stretches. •Relax and breathe freely. Do not hold your breath. •Expect to feel tension but avoid straining or pushing to the point of pain. Ready‌ set‌ stretch! It is important for everyone and should be a part of your daily routine. Your body will thank you!

Free drug disposal drop-off day to be held

It is estimated that 15.3 million people aged 12 or older used prescription drugs nonmedically in the past year (2013 National Survey on Drugs and Health). In 2015, Iowans ďŹ lled 5.1 million prescriptions for addictive drugs — mainly painkillers such as Vicodin and sedatives such as Xanax. In all, Iowa’s three million residents bought more than 300 million such pills last year (Iowa Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, administered by the Iowa Pharmacy Board). The most common way people obtain the medications abused are from friends and family so, proper disposal of unused medicines can reduce the risk of misuse and abuse. According to the Iowa Pharmacy Association, improper disposal of used and expired medication can also create potential environmental and health impacts. Proper disposal can help keep substances out of landďŹ lls and water systems. A free Drug Disposal Drop-O will be held 10 AM - 2 PM on April 30, at Buchanan County Health Center, 1600 1st St E, Independence. People are invited to drop o expired or unused prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. Those items do not need to be in original packaging. A Buchanan Co. Deputy Sheri will be present and no names will be collected or recorded. In September 2015, the event collected 350 tons of drugs State-wide; 45 Pounds were collected in Buchanan County. In Buchanan County, the event is sponsored by Buchanan County Sheri’s OďŹƒce, Buchanan County Health Center, and Pathways Behavioral Services.

Buchanan County Sheriff’s OfďŹ ce honors Communications Operators Submitted by Buchanan County Sheriff’s OfďŹ ce

Each year, the second full week of April is a time to honor telecommunications personnel in the public safety community who do the frontline job 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is a time to commend those men and women who are rarely seen but mostly heard. These dedicated 911 professionals are trained in Emergency Medical Dispatch and Emergency Communications. This year, National Public Safety Tele-communicator’s Week is April 10-16. “It’s an opportunity to honor the men and women who serve as Public Safety Dispatchers. They are the voice at the other end of the 911 call assisting a distraught caller, and at the other end of the radio when law enforcement, ďŹ reďŹ ghters, and emergency medical personnel are responding to emergency situations,â€? said Buchanan County Sheri Bill Wolfgram. “Often, these ‘invisible’ professionals are one of the forgotten components of public safety.â€? The week is set aside to recognize the â€œďŹ rstâ€? ďŹ rst responders. Before any assistance arrives in the form of law enforcement, ďŹ reďŹ ghters or EMS, the initial call is handled by one of the many behind-the-scenes heroes in communications centers nationwide. “We rarely see them, but we can take comfort in knowing they are always there. Dispatchers across the nation process thousands of 911 calls awlessly every day. They are our ďŹ rst connection to emergency services; the so-called ďŹ rst link in the public safety chain. They must quickly and accurately gather information from callers in every sort of crisis and emotional state, from injured to frightened to hysterical.â€? In addition to being a public safety link for those in need, 911 dispatchers provide a link to on-scene responders. The safety of law enforcement, ďŹ reďŹ ghters and EMS personnel is always forefront in the mind of a 911 dispatcher. This is not simply because they are friends and coworkers, but also because the safety of responders is fundamental to their ability to perform their jobs in providing service. The Buchanan County Sheri’s OďŹƒce honors Public Safety Communications personnel everywhere and thank them for their service. During National Public Safety Tele-communicator’s Week 2016, take a moment to express appreciation for the 911 dispatchers working behind the scenes. More information about the Buchanan County Communications Center and Communications Professionals can be found at www.buchanancountyiowa.org/sheri.

Iowa Crop Report High winds and frequent showers kept many Iowa producers out of their ďŹ elds dur-

ing the week ending April 10, 2016, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Statewide there were 3.1 days suitable for ďŹ eldwork. West central and southwest Iowa led the way with 4.7 days suitable for ďŹ eldwork. Field activities included anhydrous and manure applications. Farmers were also getting equipment ready for planting as they waited for warmer weather. Topsoil moisture levels rated 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 84 percent adequate and 13 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 0 percent very short, 1 percent short, 87 percent adequate and 12 percent surplus. Thirty percent of the State’s expected oat crop has been planted, two days behind the 5-year average. Oats emerged reached 3 percent, equal to last year but almost a week behind normal. Pasture condition rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 50 percent good and 5 percent excellent. Pastures have been slow to grow due to the cold conditions. Livestock conditions were described as good. Calving season has been going well for most producers, but constant moisture has been a challenge for some.

LED light bulb prices drop

Prices on energy-saving LED light bulbs dropped by more than 50 percent in the last year. LEDs can help consumers save energy and reduce electricity bills. They work the same way as incandescent bulbs, oering the same brightness, yet they are much more eďŹƒcient, and once installed, customers can reap savings for years. LED light bulbs use just 15-20 percent of the energy an incandescent bulb uses and last up to 40 times longer, many with life spans over 20 years. Tips for buying LED bulbs: 1. Before going to the store, inspect light ďŹ xture to determine the size and brightness of LED needed. 2. Choose bulbs with the Be Bright label and ENERGY STAR logo. The Be Bright label means a discount is already included in the price tag. Only bulbs that meet or exceed government energy eďŹƒciency and performance standards can carry the ENERGY STAR logo. 3. With LEDs, a bulb’s lumen count, or brightness, is more important Aurora Legion than the energy it uses. Look for LED bulbs with the lumens you need, not watts consumed. For instance, a 450-lumen LED bulb replaces a typical 40-watt incandescent bulb, and a LED bulb Legion Hall, Aurora • 4:00-8:30 p.m. with 800 lumens easily replaces a 60-watt incandescent bulb.
