Welcome To The New Art Gallery Walsall Designed by Caruso St John architects The New Art Gallery Walsall opened in February 2000 in the heart of Walsall town centre. Our renowned Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to the Borough in 1973 by Kathleen Garman, widow of the great 20th century sculptor Jacob Epstein. Kathleen was originally from nearby Wednesbury, and although she had spent much of her life in London, wanted to give something back to the Black Country where she had grown up. The Collection includes 365 important works by celebrated artists including Epstein, Van Gogh, Monet, Constable, Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Lucian Freud, alongside a wide range of artworks from across the world. Our Permanent Collection, formed in 1892, has over 3000 works, from Victorian genre paintings to contemporary installations. The changing exhibition programmes focus on the very best in international contemporary art and our Artists’ Studio and Artist Development programmes support artists from across the region. Our education and events programme provides a broad cultural experience for everyone.

CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS | FLOOR 3
Daniel Silver 8 February — 2 June 2019 This major solo exhibition by acclaimed contemporary sculptor Daniel Silver celebrates the Gallery's longstanding commitment to sculpture, and making links between historic and contemporary art, in the 60th anniversary year of Jacob Epstein's death. Silver is pushing the boundaries of sculpture in new and innovative ways, though clearly acknowledging the legacy of art history, and citing Epstein and Modernist sculpture, as well as classical art, amongst his influences. This presentation will be Silver’s most ambitious exhibition in the UK to date, juxtaposing existing works such as Rock Formations, monumental sculptures collaging stone and bronze heads onto large sections of Carrara marble, alongside new work including a series of Mannequins, presenting links between the classical and contemporary depiction of the human body.

Silver will also present a new mannequin commission in the Gallery’s Window Box, connecting with the city centre landscape, in an era of change for the British high street.

EXHIBITIONS
Sarah Taylor Silverwood Daphne 19 January — 12 May 2019 Sarah Taylor Silverwood uses drawing and language as material to produce publications, animation and installation works. Daphne considers the relationship between women and language, taking the ancient Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo as a focus. This early story, which traces Apollo’s pursuit of Daphne and her transformation into a laurel tree, has been retold over centuries in many different art forms.
Through hand-drawn animation, objects and drawing, Taylor Silverwood interprets key motifs within the story and considers how we consume these narratives. In doing so, she highlights the ways in which early stories permeate contemporary popular culture and wider social narratives around women’s experiences. Through the work, Taylor Silverwood also draws attention to the form of animation itself, as a practice that exists between drawing and moving image and a record of the maker’s hand.

Sculpture in Focus Until December 2019 To coincide with the 60th anniversary year of Jacob Epstein's death, in 2019 we are celebrating sculpture in all forms throughout our Collections programme. The Sculpture in Focus trail positions a key piece of sculpture from our Permanent Collection within each of our ten themed collection rooms, featuring diverse artists including Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Polly Morgan, Bob and Roberta Smith and Hermione Wiltshire, continuing our tradition of making links between historic and contemporary art.

COLLECTION EXHIBITIONS
Rodin: rethinking the fragment 2 February — 29 April 2019 Linked to the 2018 British Museum exhibition Rodin and the art of ancient Greece, this Spotlight loan from the British Museum brings key national works to three regional galleries across the UK, including The Thinker, from the Burrell Collection, Glasgow. This exhibition introduces Rodin's relationship with classical sculpture, demonstrating the inspiration he found visiting the British Museum and viewing the Parthenon friezes, and his adoption of the fragment as a central component of his oeuvre.

The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to host two 2018 graduates from the MA Fine Art course at the University of Wolverhampton. The students were selected following their presentations of degree work in an exhibition on Floor 3 in September 2018. Working in succession over the residency period, the selected students will be given the opportunity to develop a personal project without pressure to produce exhibitionready work, receiving valuable guidance from staff and feedback from visitors. Bethany will be developing new work which addresses the impact of technology to create new worlds that may be mismatched with the realities of the outside world. Tod will continue his research on architectural spaces and his experimentation with the documentation of ephemeral installations created from dust and tape.

ARTISTS’ STUDIO
Andrew Lacon 2 April — 2 June 2019 Andrew Lacon works with sculpture and imagery to question how materials are understood and valued in different contexts and historical periods, particularly in relation to public display. His work is informed by his early encounters with art, involving visits to municipal museums and churches but little direct engagement with contemporary art objects, which were experienced through images in books. This dislocation between authentic experience and the photographic representation of sculpture fuels Lacon’s desire to work directly with materials as a way to explore relationships between dissemination, access, artistic intention and display. Lacon will use the residency to extend his knowledge into display strategies and the history of sculpture, drawing on photographs of the studio of sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein and the backdrop of sculpture on display from the Permanent Collection. This residency coincides with a celebration of sculpture throughout the Gallery programme in the 60th anniversary year of Epstein’s death.

Mahtab Hussain Mitti Ka Ghar Until 31 March In September 2016, Mahtab Hussain travelled to Kashmir; to the place where his parents had once called home. He was able to meet members of his family for the first time, including his great-grandmother, and to witness the kind of life he may have lived, had history taken a different turn. Born and raised in Glasgow in the 1980s, Mahtab Hussain like many others, experienced racism and discrimination. He was frequently made to feel like he did not belong in Britain yet he knew no other home. The exhibition includes photographs taken during his journey, tintype portraits and a mud house built and decorated by the artist with members of the local community.
