Local authorities have filed a number of charges against a Sevierville man who allegedly pillaged the home of a neighbor while the victim served time for a DUI conviction and also cashed fraudulent checks at several local stores. Nathanial Augustas King, 27, of 1675 Valley Woods Drive, was charged with a second count of vio-

lation of probation, plus burglary, two counts of forgery, two counts of writing worthless checks and 11 counts of criminal simulation. He was being held at the Sevier County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond. Warrants show King is believed to have written a number of bad checks at area stores. In the burglary case, a man serving a two-month sentence for DUI said King broke into his home and stole $21,000 in property, appar-

ently returning several times. “His residence ... was forcibly entered and burglarized,” the warrant states. “Several witnesses observed (King) hauling truckloads of ... property from the residence.” The forgery and criminal simulation charges stem from numerous incidents where King allegedly passed fraudulent payroll checks and regular checks at area stores, mostly in April and May.

The violation of probation warrant says he was given a suspended sentence after a previous conviction for the same charge Sept. 8, 2008. He never completed a DUI repeat offenders school or alcohol and drug assessment, never paid $3,035.50 in fees, and didn’t report to his probation officer, the warrant states. n jfarrell@themountainpress.com

Not white, but a wet Christmas is likely

By ELLEN BROWN Staff Writer KNOXVILLE — Alicia Davis had known for a while that she had a brother she had never met — but she didn’t know until recently that she had another brother she had yet to meet. Gatlinburg resident Davis, 49, and her halfbrother, Donnie, 64, of Tampa, Fla., finally met for the first time Wednesday afternoon when he arrived at Greyhound Lines bus station in Knoxville. “I’m so nervous, my head is spinning,” Davis said minutes before her brother’s bus pulled into the station. “I don’t even know what he looks like.” Davis, who had grown up with an older brother now living in South Carolina, first heard that she had another brother when she was a teenager. “My father had been married before, and I overheard him say something about ‘Sam Jr.,’” she said. “When I asked about him, he told me we weren’t going to talk about it — that it was in

with their second child, Donnie. She also learned that her father never knew about him. “He was married to my mother for 56 years,” she said. “I don’t know why (he didn’t want us to meet Sam Jr.) — he always taught me that you do what’s right, that you own up to your responsibilities. But I’m a

Hardly the “White Christmas” of Bing Crobsy’s dreams, it seems likely it’ll be rain and high winds that dominate the Sevier County holiday landscape, rather than snow. Though the forecast by the end of last week included the potential for snow showers both today and on Christmas Day, that has since been changed to just the likelihood for rain both days. Hopeful dreamers can thank warm air that moved into the area as the low pressure system set to bring the precipitation to East Tennessee develops near Texas for ruining the chance for frozen flakes. She found the contact information for the nephew of her father’s ex-wife. “He told me he wasn’t sure where Sam Jr. was, that he was somewhat of a recluse,” Davis said. “Then he said, ‘You do know that you have another brother, don’t you?’” Davis learned that when her father came home from the military, his wife became pregnant

This photo taken from the surveillance video shot by Rheam’s Drug Store shows the apparent getaway car used by persons who stole Freon from the store’s air conditioning unit.

Sevierville police investigate theft of Freon from pump Submitted report The Sevierville Police Department is investigating the apparent theft of Freon from a heat pump/air conditioning unit at a local business. According to Detective Kevin Bush, surveillance video from Rheam’s Drug Store taken on the afternoon of Dec. 20 shows what appears to be two young men approaching the area where the unit was located. The business owners discovered the Freon was gone when the unit was not operating properly. The suspect vehicle is a blue late model Honda Civic, with Tennessee license plate. The suspects are described as two males, possibly teenagers or young adults. Anyone with information regarding this incident is requested to contact Bush at 453-5506. Bush said several apparent Freon thefts have occurred in surrounding areas over the past several weeks which authorities believe are related to Freon huffing. Freon huffing is the inhalation of the Freon gas, Bush said, which produces a brief high caused by the gas displacing oxygen in the brain. “The practice is extremely dangerous and can cause immediate death or other serious complications, he said. According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC), “Death from inhalant abuse can occur after a single use or after prolonged use. Sudden sniffing death may result within minutes of inhalant abuse from irregular heart rhythm leading to heart failure. Other causes of death include asphyxiation, aspiration, or suffocation. A user who is suffering from impaired judgment may also experience fatal injuries from motor vehicle accidents or sudden falls. Users report experiencing initial excitement, then drowsiness, lightheadedness and agitation. Inhalant abusers also report feeling a loss of inhibitions. Additional symptoms exhibited by long-term inhalant abusers, NDIC says, include weight loss, muscle weakness, disorientation, inattentiveness, lack of coordination, irritability, and depression. Withdrawal symptoms include sweating, rapid pulse, hand tremors, insomnia, nausea or vomiting, hallucinations, and, in severe cases, grand mal seizures.

SEVIERVILLE — It was something of a small, but definitely appreciative crowd, that filled the Sevier County Health Care Center dining room Saturday to hear two groups of students in music classes offered by Sherry Marshall spread some Christmas cheer. Their voices rang out through the little room festooned with a brightly lit tree and handmade construction paper garlands hung from the ceiling. They sang along to everything from “Silver Bells to “Away in a Manger, their voices as warm as the spring sun on the snowy winter morning. The performances were just a couple of several that Marshall schedules each year as a way of giving her students opportunities to perform and, she hopes, brightening the lives of those they play for. “I like for the children to see they can give their music to the community as sort of a gift, Marshall explains. “It helps me teach them about playing in front of people and accompanying people when they’re singing. More than providing benefit for the kids, it seems the folks at the nursing homes and schools the children go to really enjoy the performances. “They just love it every time we come, Marshall said. Sevier County Health Care Center resident Audrey Sprout sure did. While she admitted she’s not yet completely ready for Christmas, she said singing along with the children’s playing helped get her fully in the holiday spirit. “I think it’s great, Sprout said. “The children did a wonderful job. The youngsters performed on the piano, guitar and with their voices. Marshall believes learning to play music, particularly at a young age, is key in making a better person. “Music is fun and it gives them a good outlet, Marshall said. “It builds confidence, self esteem and children who learn music do better in school. Obviously, I think it’s very important to teach

children music. Jama Kennedy, a 10-year-old student of Marshall’s for about a year and a half, said she definitely enjoys her musical studies. “It’s pretty fun performing in front of people and making people happy, she said. Kennedy played “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on the piano, starting the song with a look of determination set on getting the notes right that melted into a smile as she heard the residents joining in the tune. “My favorite part was hearing them singing along, she said. “I like to come here because we can share some Christmas spirit with them. n dhodges@themountainpress.com

BOMA has last meeting of decade By JEFF FARRELL Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — The Board of Mayor and Aldermen worked through a handful of items in their final regular meeting of the decade. The board approved on final reading the rezoning of property on the north side of Poole Street near Belle Meadows Boulevard from low density residential use to medium density residential use. The owner of the property told board members he was asking for the rezoning so he could build an additional house on property he owned; he said he hoped to build it to meet the requirements of his father, who had a leg amputated due to medical condition. Neighbors had asked the board to reconsider the rezoning, saying that the new zoning could lower their property values and that once the property was rezoned it could be used for other purposes allowed under the new classification. Also Monday, the board: n Voted to apply for a $100,000 Tennessee Energy Efficiency and Conversation Block grant n Voted to close some downtown streets during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday parade n Approved first reading of budget amendments to reconcile the 2009 budget after bond refinancing and other expenditures

Police seek help from public finding check/credit card thief Submitted report The Sevierville Police Department, along with the Maryville Police Department, is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a woman suspected of stealing personal checks and credit cards. According to Sevierville Detective Kevin Bush, the victim reported that her purse was stolen while she was at work in Sevierville on Nov. 16. That same day, the suspect allegedly used the victim’s stolen checks to make

purchases at a Maryville Walmart. The suspect is described by police as a white female with reddish/ brown short hair, wearing a white shirt and red pants. She has allegedly used stolen checks to purchase several thousand dollars worth of items from Walmart, Sears and grocery stores in Maryville, Knoxville and Chattanooga. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bush at 453-5506 or the Maryville Police Department at 865273-3700.

What to do about big trees in your yard I frequently get asked by homeowners as to whom they should call about selling the big tree(s) in their yard. The expectation is that a logger or sawmill owner will take the tree and pay for the logs. Unfortunately, the truth is that the homeowner should call a tree service — and will have to pay them to take the tree down. Loggers generally operate on large scales, harvesting trees from many acres in a single job. By cutting and selling truckloads of trees at one time, they can pay for the costs associated with moving equipment, establishing access roads, etc. Individual trees are simply not worth enough to justify the expense of coming to someone’s house to cut a few trees. Cutting yard trees also takes more work than forest harvesting because there are often houses, streets and wires that need to be avoided. Furthermore, sawmills generally do not want logs from yard trees. Often the form (size, shape, number of knots) of a open-grown tree is not good but more importantly there is a higher risk of nails, chain or other metal being buried deep within the tree. The risk of damage from a saw hitting metal almost always outweighs the potential value of the lumber. Estate tax planning guide The USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station and its collaborators recently released the estate tax

planning guide titled “Estate Tax Planning: What Will Become of Your Timberland? This is the updated version of one of the most widely used tax publications for private family forest owners. The electronic version is available free at www.srs.fs.usda.gov/ pubs/gtr/gtr_srs112.pdf. The publication contains 180 pages of practical estate planning techniques and estate tax laws and rules with many examples and applications specifically

for woodland property. It is written to assist woodland owners and their advisors — attorneys, consulting foresters, tax preparers, financial planners, as well as state agency foresters and cooperative extension agents. Daddy’s girl ‌ I was always a Daddy’s girl.â€? Davis was accompanied by her husband, Jimmy, and 16-year-old daughter, Hallie, at the bus station. It was clear she was growing more anxious as the bus’ arrival time got closer. Hallie rubbed her mother’s back and smiled encouragingly. Donnie is the very last one off the bus. Davis couldn’t wait — she met him at the door, smiling and crying at the same time. “I can’t believe how beautiful you are!â€? he said, grinning from ear-to-ear. “He looks wonderful,â€? she said, beaming. “He’s my brother.â€? Donnie said he was “in shockâ€? when he received the letter from his longlost sister. “It broke my heart,â€? he said. “It was sad, but I was happy at the same time (to hear from her).â€? It’s definitely been a Christmas to remember for the family. Just days ago, Davis learned that there was a lead on Sam Jr., and she hopes to be in touch with him soon. Her other brother, Danny, 60, was unable to travel to Knoxville to meet Donnie because of health problems. The siblings plan to meet him at his home in South Carolina over the holidays. “It was meant to be,â€? Donnie said of the meeting.

“It’s going to be a great Christmas, Davis added. “We’ve got our family back together. n ebrown@themountainpress.com

Center’s Web site, there is about a 5-10 percent chance Sevier County will have snow on the ground on Christmas in any given year. Still, there may be plenty of reason for local residents to keep their eyes on the weather as the holiday approaches. In addition to the chance rain will put a damper on some candlelight services this evening, National Weather Service Meteorologist Shawn O’Neill says the storm moving through will likely bring potentially dangerous winds to the area. “We do have a system moving through on Christmas Day. We’re anticipating it to start as some very light rain on Christmas Eve afternoon and there will be the chance for rain each day through the weekend, O’Neill says. “The main area of concern is the high winds we’re expecting to develop as the system moves through. The storm seems likely to produce the same type of gusts as a pair of systems that moved through the county in recent weeks, both of which brought gusts near or above 100 miles per hour to the area. “This is a very similar set up, O’Neill says. “We are expecting we’re going to see some very strong winds as part of that local phenomenon that develops when this type of system moves in. The phenomenon O’Neill refers to is called mountain waves, the name given to gusts that run up against the ridges of the Smokies, then crash back down into the valleys. That leads to some tenuous conditions, particularly in the foothills which often bear the brunt of the winds. Such gusts have left downed trees

across the county and put thousands of local residents in the dark during the most recent storms in which their fury was on display. Though it seems snow is out of the question for Christmas, the area may yea see a very small amount of the white stuff Friday night into Saturday. “There will be a cold front that moves through and we may have the air cool down enough that it could support some frozen precipitation, O’Neill says. “We’re not expecting any accumulation except in the highest elevations, and they may get an inch or two. They’re not going to be ideal conditions for that type of up-slope snow that we sometimes see, though. While there may not be a lot of new snow coming, crews in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are continuing their efforts to dig out from last weekend’s blizzard-like conditions, which brought more than three and a half feet of the white stuff to some peaks. It took until Tuesday afternoon to get Newfound Gap Road open through the park as heavy equipment moved tons of snow off the blacktop. Still, it took only a few hours for conditions to again worsen as melting snow created numerous icy patches and park officials decided to shut the gates once again. The road again reopened Wednesday morning, though some parts were still fairly treacherous. Park spokeswoman Nancy Gray warned that buses should still not use the thoroughfare and motorists should

use extreme caution. Several roads in the park remained closed Wednesday, including Foothills Parkway East, Greenbrier Road past the ranger station, the Cosby

entrance road, Cataloochee Road, Old NC-284 between Big Creek and Cataloochee, and Lakeview Drive. n dhodges@themountainpress.com

“HISTORICAL OGLE CABIN Special Commemorative Painting Celebrating Artist Randall Ogle 40th Year of Painting 1969-2009

“HISTORICAL MARTHA JANE OGLE CABIN 3IGNED .UMBERED s ,IMITED %DITION s &ITS h X v &RAME

William Ogle was on a hunting trip from South Carolina when his Cherokee companions led him to the Smoky Mountains. He fell in love with the area and felt he had found paradise on earth and planned to move his family to the area. He planned a cabin and even cut the logs in 1803. He returned to the Greenville, South Carolina area to get his family and return with them to their new home. But he got sick with the plague - thought to be malaria - and died the same year. But his dream was kept alive by his determined wife Martha Jane Huskey Ogle. In 1807, four years later, she traveled to Gatlinburg with her 7 teenage children - 5 sons and 2 daughters - and her bother Peter Huskey. She was determined to fulfill the dream of her husband, and with her children and brother, she did. Located in downtown Gatlinburg, the cabin logs are made from American Chestnut, which is now extinct. The logs were hand hewn, squared off an notched on the ends to fit together. The Ogle name is a prominent and well-known name in the Sevier County area of the Great Smoky Mountains. it was said that in the mid 1950’s about 80% of the people who lived in Gatlinburg all their lives could trace their ancestry to the Ogle’s who built and lived in the Ogle cabin. Smoky Mountain native artist, Randall Ogle, traces is family to this first cabin.

Bredesen’s biofuels deadline nears NASHVILLE (AP) — Gov. Phil Bredesen’s timetable is about to run out for what he has billed as a “major” commercial investment related to Tennessee’s biofuels program. Bredesen had touted the potential investment after a Republican-controlled legislative panel raised concerns about Tennessee’s involvement in the biofuel initiative last month. The Democratic governor warned that the panel’s hesitation over an $11 million contract could jeopardize the related

investment. Lawmakers relented a week later and approved the contract in an 11-1 vote. “We’re looking at a significant announcement, I hope by year end,” Bredesen told reporters after a speech to the Farm Bureau in Franklin last month. He described the projects as “a major new investment in biofuels ... which doesn’t require any subsidy at all.” As originally envisioned, the pilot plant in Vonore was to produce 5 million gallons of ethanol per year that could be sold to pay

the operating costs of the research refinery. After a revision of the concept, however, the facility will now produce only about 250,000 gallons annually. Officials say that’s enough to determine whether the process of turning switchgrass to fuel will work for a full-size refinery. But lawmakers said they were surprised by the change in scope and also that the plant will first focus on processing corncobs before moving on to converting switchgrass into ethanol. The pilot plant is being

run by Genera Energy LLC, a for-profit subsidiary of the University of Tennessee, and DuPont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol LLC, a joint venture of DuPont Co. and Genencor, a division of Denmarkbased Danisco AS. Kelly Tiller, president and chief executive officer of Genera, told lawmakers last month that “very strong incentives” are in place for Itasca, Ill.-based DuPont Danisco to build a commercial plant in Tennessee in the future. She declined to give specifics.

Childhood memories of Christmas By RON RADER Guest columnist

“When are you going to write something else?” Jama said as she handed me my cleaning across Hatcher’s counter. “Why don’t you write something Christmasey.” She launched a stream of “remember whens,” and we briefly shared some favorite childhood remembrances of Christmases past. More friends and acquaintances did the same. It seems the most memorable and most poignant highlights were the ones each person now missed most. Their eyes took on a faraway gaze, slight smiles framed their recall as treasured Christmas thoughts spilled out. Hopefully, you’ll savor some of their responses: String thin tinfoil icicles thoughtfully and evenly draped on fresh cut evergreen tree, 498 total strips, cause the dog ate two. Lights with aluminum star backs, first the back and then the bulb…always red and green; one sick bulb darkened them all. The family favorite ornament at tree top… Spun glass angel hair stretched into veil thin spider webs that enveloped the tree, as hands, arms, back, and neck of the pullers itched and burned… House front windows filled with glass globed wreaths with real candles accompanied by much praying and handwringing… All lights and wreaths turned off by unplugging the cord… Sleepily crawling through evergreen underbrush and behind couches and chests plugging and unplugging before bed was not a favorite pastime… Oh, Mary did you know… Granny’s shortening bread made in tins and creamy egg custard… Cranberry salad tart with lime slices and crunchy with chopped celery… Stack cake with each of 12 layers sandwiched by spicy apple butter or with applesauce laced with ground spearmint or peppermint Christmas candy… Boiling, pouring, cooling, pulling, eating homemade creamy vanilla taffy and boxing a dozen or so tins for gifts… Ole timey chess pie born two hours ago, still hot with ice cold milk fresh this morning from Mrs. Lawson’s cow or Ruby Allen’s cow… Country ham ’n red eye gravy simmering and awaiting cathead biscuits to brown… Fudge with walnuts and pecans cracked in October… Sliced apples dried in Granny’s attic and simmered in brown sugar, butter and cinnamon… Grandmother’s house with the family gathering of 26 strong for picnic ham, roasted chicken, dressing and six different kinds of cake… Kids ate in the kitchen, grownups at the large dining room table. cooking aromas fighting with spicy smell of a real Christmas tree and 14 real evergreen wreaths… The ritual of the proverbial arriving relative always unsteady, rosy faced, and especially happy… Departing relative more unsteady, rosier faced, yawningly happy… Celebrating Christmas Eve and Day with one gross of firecrackers 24 to pack, Chinese made, 49 cents plus tax… Immediately after Thanksgiving the annual gift ritual began — the baking of 32 fruit cakes as gifts for friends, complete with decorative tin container, many secretly felt they should be for enemies instead, and would never admit that they secretly hated a fruit cake… Favorite mother–daughter annual trip: catch Trailways bus at Bruce Street’s sandwich shop to Knoxville’s Gay street for the Christmas parade… Go to Miller’s department store along with mother-daughter friends, choose a doll for Christmas, and have lunch at Gay Street’s S&W Cafeteria… Ride the street car to bus depot for return on Trailways bus… Oh Mary, did you know… For ages the Christmas celebration has enabled believers, friends and families to come together to build community and share love and friendship despite the complex dynamics of family tensions and a world that for the most part seems to ignore the real reason for the season. “… For unto you this day a child is born; He is Christ the Lord...” This Christmas, I invite you to join your Christmas gathering of family and friends and share some favorite thoughts and highlights of Christmas present and past. The people, who shared their thoughts with me, seemed moved, humbled, and deeply grateful for the pause, that enabled them to recall, and savor their own deeply unique and fond memories. It shone in their eyes and voices. History is important. Oh Mary did you know… Oh Mary did you know, your baby boy will one day rule the nation; That the baby boy you’re holding, is Lord of all creation. That this sleeping child is the Great I Am; Oh Mary, did you know that your little boy Would bring His Love to fill the hearts of the world… — Ron Rader is a Sevier County native and a real estate advisor with Sperry Van Ness-R.M. Moore LLC. He can be reached at 604-9161 or by e-mail to ron@ronraderproperties.com.

E d i t or i a l

Patience, patience It will get you through difficult travel situations this holiday season Many of our friends and neighbors in Sevier County will be welcoming guests over the Christmas weekend. Seems like lots of people would rather come to Sevier County than have Sevier County folks come to them. Easy to understand that. However, for those who are traveling, perhaps leaving today, the key word is patience. Not only will you be sharing the roads and airports with lots of other people, but this area is especially challenging this year for motorists. Fortunately, U.S. 411 (Newfound Gap Road) through the Smokies reopened on Tuesday after being closed for days due to snow. Having that road closed, as well as Interstate 40 due to the rock slide, made travel in eastern Tennessee/ western North Carolina daunting at best. It still is, and holiday travel will only

make things worse. The roads will be clogged this week, as people are feeling better about the economy and the future. Unless you leave a little early and show some patience, you may get frustrated. And that can lead to risk taking and accidents. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is doing its part to make Christmas driving a little easier by stopping all road construction during the holiday period. It’s important to remember that a year ago we were still dealing with I-40 being closed through downtown Knoxville. That’s no longer the case, so we have two ways to go east and west on an interstate through Knoxville. Bottlenecks often occur when trying to get through bigger cities like Knoxville, Nashville, Asheville and Chattanooga. Patience, dear friends, patience. It’s your best

friend when traveling for Christmas and New Year’s Day. Those who are flying may also face delays as airports and airlines try to catch up following snowstorms that canceled a lot of flights. It’s not easy to get people in the air after so many flights get cancelled. Many airlines brought in more people and bigger planes to try and solve the problem, but airports — already crowded with Christmas travelers — may be even more congested. What’s the word for today? Patience. It will get you through trying times and frustrating delays, and you’ll reach your destination in a better frame of mind. Plus, cursing and using your middle finger just don’t go together with the Three Wise Men and the baby Jesus. Christmas will be merrier if you keep your cool, leave early and remember the reason for the holiday.

P u b l i c f or u m Store’s Santa lifts spirits of little girl through prayer

Editor: Jason Voge of The Three Bears Gift Shop in Pigeon Forge sent this letter they received after the Sloan family took their daughter to visit Santa Claus upstairs in the gift shop. When Santa asked the child what she wanted for Christmas, she said she wanted her aunt to be OK and get out of the hospital. Her aunt had been in a coma since October. Santa said, “I can’t make her better, but I know who can,” and he prayed with the child. The letter from the Sloan family to the Three Bears Santa: “I wanted to let you know about our blessing that touched my child this past weekend. My child asked for a very special request this weekend. She asked for her Auntie to get better for Christmas. “You prayed with her. This was the year that she was starting to question if Santa was real or not. We told her that if she didn’t believe any more that you wouldn’t come to our house any more. “On Saturday, my husband was able to talk

people anywhere. During the last snowstorm, I found myself stuck (really sliding) on the Dudley-Creek Bypass. While I have driven in ice and snow before, this was the first time I found myself in those conditions in my newer car. While I love my car, it does not love snow. A gentleman and his sons came to my rescue and literally guided my car down the hill to safer ground. They were helping their mother/wife and me too. They were standing in the cold and scraping the road so we could have traction. One of the boys only had shorts on with a jacket, but he was out there working away to help me. I was so thankful to get off the hill that, while I thanked them profusely, I did not get their names. They all deserve a medal for their help and kindness. While I may have forgotAssistance during snowstorm ten to get their names, I will not forget appreciated by lucky recipient their help and caring on a cold wintery day. Editor: Jackie Muse I am so lucky to call this area my home. Pigeon Forge We have some of the nicest and kindness

to his sister on the phone for the first time since October 5. What a miracle. Mckenzie said I have been praying to Jesus but I just knew that Santa would get through. She believes now. “I wanted to share this with you and thank you for this special moment that we had. Most Santas wouldn’t have taken the time to pray with a child. But you are a special man. I thank God for that. “This was a moment that will never be forgotten in our family. My sister-in-law got a flu shot back in October and developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome. She hasn’t had movement and has been on a respirator ever since then. But she now has started to talk some and she breathed on her own for 20 hours on Monday. “Please keep praying for her. Now the Sloans believe in Santa forever. May God bless your family all through the year. Cindy Sloan Duncan, S.C.

G-P Highlanders earn trip to championship with 74-55 victory

PREP HOOPS

By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer GATLINBURG — The Gatlinburg-Pittman Highlanders boys basketball team took the roar out of the visiting Macon County Tigers during the Smoky Mountain Classic tournament semi-final contest late Tuesday night, 74-55. “It was a good win,” said G-P coach Raul Placeres. “Macon County is a very similar team to Gibbs (a District 3-AA rival). “They pressure you the whole time, but we were able to handle their pressure. It was a great job by our boys.” G-P (11-1) got off to a good start offensively when senior Jake Jackson sniped treys on consecutive Highlanders possessions, but the Macon County (6-5) team responded with three pointers of its own each time to keep the game knotted at 6-6. The teams battled evenly for the next few minutes, but the Tigers took their first lead, 13-12, with 2:08 in the opening frame. Macon County extended its lead to 17-13 heading into the second quarter. But the Blue and Gold hung tough and recaptured the advantage with 6:09 in the half when senior Marquise “Q” Wall drained a trey from the corner to give G-P a 19-17 edge. A minute later, however, and Macon County’s Dallas Grace grabbed a board and Cobey Hitchcock/The Mountain Press put it back in for a 20-19 G-P senior McKinley Maples (10) led the Highlanders to a 74-55 win Tigers lead. over Macon County late Tuesday night in the semi-finals of the Smoky Jackson answered for the Mountain Classic basketball tournament in Gatlinburg. Maples scored 21 Highlanders with his third points and hit four consecutive second-half treys en route to the win.

Titans trying to finish off historic turnaround By TERESA M. WALKER AP Sports Writer

Lady Highlanders win 53-45 for 7th By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer GATLINBURG — The Gatlinburg-Pittman Lady Highlanders finished a disappointing seventh out of eight teams at the Smoky Mountain Classic basketball tournament this week in Gatlinburg, but at least the Blue and Gold ended things on a high note with a 53-45 win Wednesday morning over Paxton of Florida. “We played great defense on them, and we forced them

into a lot of turnovers off the press,” said G-P coach Mike Rader. “They finished the game with 15 walks.” Paxton had no players in double digits, although two tallied nine points in the loss. G-P senior Leah Bryan led all scorers with 15 points, and junior Beka Owens was the other Lady Highlander in double digits with 11. Lacee Tinker had eight and Macy Shults had six in the win. chitchcock@themountainpress.com

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans, the team that seemingly blew its Super Bowl dreams with a dreadful 0-6 start, will play a game that matters Friday night. And it won’t just matter for the San Diego Chargers. Tennessee is among seven AFC teams tied at 7-7 and mathematically alive in the playoff chase, just one game behind the last wild-card berth. The Titans already have made NFL history by clawing back to .500 after that 0-6 start. According to STATS, no NFL team has ever finished at .500 or better after starting 0-6. Talk about a titanic turnaround. “Anytime a team goes 0-6 and gets back to .500 and has a chance to get to the playoffs, you’ve accomplished something,” Titans center Kevin Mawae said. “We can’t rest on that. We’ve got to continue on. We’ve got a great team.” The Titans never lost the confidence gained from last season’s 13-3 record, even after the sixth loss in a 59-0 rout at New England. Coach Jeff Fisher sent them home for their bye with permission to forget football, a welcome mental break. Owner Bud Adams ordered Vince Young off the bench and into the lineup, and their banged-up secondary healed up. Since then, they’ve been nearly unstoppable, winning seven of eight. Only New Orleans has averaged

Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young (10) celebrates after throwing a 32-yard touchdown pass to Nate Washington against the Miami Dolphins in the third quarter of an NFL football game on Sunday in Nashville. more yards on offense (413.9 to 398) or points (30.6 to 29.5) than Tennessee. No pressure, only opportunity. “It speaks volumes about Jeff and the coaching staff and the leaders on the team how we’ve been able to keep things honed in. There was never a sense of panic at 0-6,” Mawae said. “It does speak to the character of our team that we’ll be able to handle the short week and be prepared.”

San Diego coach Norv Turner, whose Chargers (11-3) have won nine straight since starting 2-3, thinks the Titans’ turnaround is the toughest thing to do in the NFL. “No one wants to be in that position, and sometimes things happen that are out of your control. To keep a group together, it speaks volumes of the staff, but it also speaks about the players to trust and believe.

We all know in this league there’s a tendency when teams struggle, it goes the other way,” Turner said. The Titans, who needed overtime to down Miami 27-24 last week, must win their sixth straight home game, then finish with a victory at Seattle on the final day of the season. They also need plenty of help to keep their faint playoff hopes alive. It won’t be easy against the Chargers, who have clinched their fourth straight AFC West title. San Diego, which beat Cincinnati by the same 27-24 score last week, wants the AFC’s No. 2 seed and the first-round bye that comes with it. The Chargers also want a 10th straight victory and an 18th consecutive December win dating back to 2006. Quarterback Philip Rivers, the AFC’s leading passer and third in the NFL with a 102.8 rating, has been under center for each of those December wins. He sees no reason to slow down on Christmas night. “I don’t think you really think about that streak, but ... the fact that we’ve been able to win in December the last four years it’s helped us get going into January. So, the fact that this is the last one in December, it’s not the forefront, but it’d be nice to be able to extend it to next season by going and getting this win,” Rivers said. “Obviously that’s not at the top of the list, but it would be nice to keep that going.” See TITANS, Page A9

second quarter, 38-35. Maples ended the night with five treys and a game-leading 21 points after being benched for the first time this season at the start of Tuesday night’s game. Maples fouled out of a game in the third quarter Monday night after collecting his fourth and fifth infractions on the same play, one personal foul and one technical. “McKinley didn’t start, but he came in the game and played huge for us, said Placeres. “He responded well. G-P held a double-digit, 49-39, lead heading into the fourth, Maples made it 56-47 with his fifth trey of the night at the 5:21 mark, and the Highlander pulled away for the 19-point win by outscoring the Tigers 25-16 in the fourth quarter. Jackson had 12, Agosto had 11 and Wall had 10 points in the G-P win. Cody Boone led Macon County with 12 points, and Grace finished the night as the team’s other double-digit scorer with 10 in the losing effort. G-P played the Smoky Mountain Classic championship contest late Wednesday night against Station Camp, and the results of that game will appear in the Christmas edition of The Mountain Press.

NASHVILLE (AP) — The best piece of advice linebacker Colin Allred has gotten in the past couple days came from the man he’s replacing. The second-year Tennessee linebacker still doesn’t have his own football card. So Keith Bulluck, the 10-year veteran whose season is over with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament, told Allred to earn that card by playing a great game in his place. The last time the Titans were without two defensive starters because of injuries, the result was a 59-0 snowy beatdown in New England in October. Now they’re without Bulluck, their leading tackler, and linebacker David Thornton before Friday night’s critical game with San Diego to keep slim playoff hopes alive. Coach Jeff Fisher says they’ll be fine.

titans

Tennessee will be without two starting linebackers due to season-ending injuries to Keith Bulluck, the team’s leading tackler, and David Thornton. San Diego has lost its second center, though Nick Hardwick might return after hurting his left ankle in the season opener. The Titans will be challenged trying to slow down Rivers, who needs 109 yards passing to reach 4,000 for a second straight season, and tight end Antonio Gates without Bulluck and Thornton. Gates already has 1,071 yards receiving this season and is 31 yards short of a career high. San Diego has to defend the dual threat of Young and Chris Johnson. Young threw for a career-high three touchdowns last week and has a 106.4 passer rating at home this season. Johnson is 270 yards shy of becoming the sixth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season and has nine straight 100-yard rushing

games. “Rivers is having an unbelievable season in December, like always, Young said. “Us, as an offense, we have to keep him off the field. Fisher has never beaten San Diego, even seeing Ryan Leaf get a rare NFL win for the Chargers back in 1998. The Chargers have won six straight in this series, including two in the span of four weeks in 2007. The Titans blew a big lead in their last game here Dec. 9, 2007, in losing in overtime, and four players fined $32,500 total for late hits and horse-collar tackles. “I already know going into it that it’s one of those weeks that you prepare for a dogfight, because of the type of guys they have over there, San Diego linebacker Shaun Phillips said. “ Fisher has been telling his Titans scenarios of what must happen for them to reach the postseason. Neither he nor the Titans are sharing those details from what he called his crystal ball. “We don’t win this game, we’re out, Fisher said.

Junior high student’s comments hurtful to girl

Dear Annie: I started junior high in September. Everything was going fine, although I wish I could be more popular and stuff like that. This one guy had a crush on me and asked me out. We had only texted and never really talked in person. So I said no. Now he’s taking it personally. I have very full lips like Angelina Jolie, which he says make me look like a duck. So all his friends are now making fun of me. They make quacking noises and call me duck names. The boy who likes me says he doesn’t think I look like a duck, yet he makes fun of me with his friends. I know people say when a guy makes fun of you, he really likes you, but I don’t think that is necessarily true. I act like it doesn’t bother me, but I’m afraid they’ll keep doing it for the rest of the year. It’s ruining my chances with other guys because no one wants to go out with “the duck.” They are taking away my dignity. I know I’ll be grateful for my lips when I’m older, but this is wrecking my self-esteem. Please help. -- Duck Girl in New York Dear New York: This is a form of bullying, and it can have an extremely deleterious effect on your highschool experience if it doesn’t stop immediately. You sound like a smart girl with a lot of common sense, so we know you can weather this. But these kids should not get away with bullying. Please talk it over with your parents and consider reporting it to the

school guidance counselor or principal. Dear Annie: Can you tell me what the etiquette is for leftovers when a guest brings a dish to dinner? A friend brought a covered casserole to my house and, when she left, retrieved it from the fridge. Since there were only two forkfuls left, we were surprised. We’ve never had a guest do this before. Is she rude, or is this acceptable behavior? -- No Leftovers Dear No Leftovers: When someone brings a dish, the leftovers usually stay with the hosts unless otherwise specified. However, with only two forkfuls left, it’s more likely your friend simply wanted to be sure she retrieved her covered dish and the food was incidental. Dear Annie: Your answer to “Worried Daughter” was dead on. She said her mother was drinking and driving, and you told her to call the police. More family members need to bear a little more responsibility when they see that one of their loved ones is putting others at risk. My father was a police officer who was going through a deep depression, and his drinking was completely out of control. One

week before Christmas, my mother informed me that once again Dad was at the local bar. I told her if he killed a family just days before Christmas, that murder would be on her shoulders if she didn’t do anything about his drinking. Her response? “How could I do that to your father?” So I did it for her. I called and told the bartender that if he served one more drink to my father, he, too, would be at fault if an innocent family was killed on his drive home. I told him to take away Dad’s car keys. My father was very angry and incredibly embarrassed. But he also got a wakeup call. “Worried Daughter” should absolutely call the police and protect the other people on the road from her drunk mother. It may seem cruel, but killing an innocent family is crueler. And who knows, maybe her mother will react the way my father did and finally get the help she needs. I am happy to say Dad is now sober and has often thanked me for shaking him up. -- Not Worried Anymore in Canada Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Health bill clears final Senate hurdle By ERICA WERNER Associated Press Writer W A S H I N G T O N — Exultant Senate Democrats pushed President Barack Obama’s landmark health care overhaul past a final procedural hurdle Wednesday, setting up a Christmas Eve vote to pass the legislation extending coverage to 30 million Americans. Democrats voted 60-39 to end a GOP filibuster and move to a final vote Thursday. All 58 Democrats and two independents hung together against unanimous Republican opposition. It was the 24th day of debate on the 10-year, nearly $1 trillion bill. “It is now only hours until this Senate will pass meaningful health care reform, said Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont. “It has been a long time coming, Baucus said. “I thank God that I have lived to see this day. It was the third time Democrats have put up 60 votes on procedural measures since Monday. just a simple majority so Democrats should triumph easily. It will be a big victory for Obama and the Democrats, although the Senate bill will still have to be reconciled with a Housepassed version before Obama could sign a final package. There are some thorny differences between the two chambers, including stiffer abortion curbs in the House bill and a new government-run insurance plan in the House bill that’s not in the Senate version. The sweeping legislation, crafted over months of laborious negotiations, would dramatically remake the country’s health care system with new requirements for nearly everyone to purchase insurance. The government would provide subsidies to help lower-income people pay for coverage. Unpopular insurance company practices such as denying coverage to people with preexisting conditions would be banned. Powerless to stop the bill, Republicans stepped up their attacks, con-

tending the sweeping bill threatened to harm Medicare and add billions to the deficit. “Tomorrow the Senate will vote on a bill that makes a bad situation worse, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said on the Senate floor. “This bill slid rapidly down the slippery slope to more and more government control of health care. The final vote is now set for 7 a.m. Thursday, not 8 a.m. as agreed to earlier in the week. It had originally been scheduled for 7 p.m., but Republicans agreed not to use all their debate time so they could leave town earlier for the holidays and avoid bad weather looming in the midwest. On Wednesday, senators

advanced the vote from 8 a.m. to 7 a.m. Thursday. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., suggested moving it up some more and holding it Wednesday night, but Republicans didn’t agree to that. The last time the Senate voted on Christmas Eve was Dec. 24, 1895, on a military affairs bill concerning employment of former Confederate officers, according to the Senate Historical Office. Democrats also cast several votes Wednesday turning back points of order raised against the bill by Republicans, including one by Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., questioning the constitutionality of requiring most every American to buy health insurance. 2nd location in the Gatlinburg Space Needle!
