GATLINBURG — In the wake of a heated debate about the incentives used to lure Lisega Inc. to locate its American headquarters in Kodak, the Board of Directors of the Sevier County Economic

Development Council has recommended officials adopt a standardized policy to deal with such bargaining. In its monthly meeting at Ripley’s Aquarium on Wednesday morning, the group voted unanimously to urge the County Commission to approve the proposed rules, which dictate how tax breaks are offered to lure industries to the area. A plan to offer Lisega what’s called a Payment In Lieu Of Taxes

(PILOT) program drew fire from county leaders earlier this year as they worried about the lost revenue from a potentially major property assessment. That opposition came despite the fact the deal wasn’t the first the county has made with new businesses coming to the area. TRW Fuji Valve and the now-defunct Dan River plant got tax breaks of up to several decades for locating here. Sevier County Economic Development Council (SCEDC)

Executive Director Allen Newton successfully defended the incentives offered to Lisega and the plan was eventually approved by the County Commission, though it took some serious campaigning and two votes. By JEFF FARRELL Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — Firefighters were unable to save a Robinson Gap Road house on Wednesday after a late morning fire. The owner and his wife were not present when the fire started around 11:30 a.m., said Michael Huskey, assistant chief of the Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department. Neither was another man who lived in an apartment added to the home. Thirty firefighters from several agencies responded to the scene and fought the fire for hours. No one was injured, although several firefighters had to be

treated for smoke inhalation and heat. The house was built onto a bank near the road, and had been expanded upon, making it difficult for firefighters to control, Huskey said. “It was not easily accessible,” he said. It wasn’t clear how the fire started. “We’re not sure really where it started, but it got into the attic and that was all she wrote,” Huskey said. SEVIERVILLE — Fort Sanders Sevier Senior Center invites the community to its second annual “Summer Spectacular” fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. The event, which business manager Karen Estep calls “a day filled with fun and food,” will benefit the senior center’s food services and other operating programs. Estep said the J and L Food Program assists people who are unable to be visited by Meals On Wheels because of its limited service, and is now aiding up to 50 individuals. “We go by the saying, ‘To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world,’” she said. Summer Spectacular will include live music from acts such as The Country Gentlemen, the DreamCatcher Band and the Blackwoods, as well as craft activities for children and a live auction with the help of Thompson Carr Auctions. Jimmie Ross sues over house foreclosure By JEFF FARRELL Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — A man who blamed court and law enforcement authorities for his wife’s death last year during foreclosure proceedings has filed a civil complaint against the same authorities in federal court, but without making mention of his wife’s death. Jimmie Ross’ complaint is filed against defendants as individuals and not against any local government agency. It accuses General Sessions Judge Jeff Rader, Sevier County Sheriff Ron Seals, Sevierville Police Chief Don Myers and several law enforcement officers of joining in a conspiracy to deprive him of his property, along with officials with the bank that held the note on his home.

“The plaintiff was behind on the mortgage payments of his residential home,� Ross said in the complaint. “The bank instructed certain individuals to foreclose on the home. The plaintiff proved the defendants had no jurisdiction or standing to foreclose on the property.� Ross is acting as his own attorRoss ney. He gives a Louisiana address. The complaint says he is not seeking public funds, but he is asking for $800,000 in actual damages and $1.8 million in punitive damages. He accuses the defendants of violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO)

Act, depriving him of due process, and slandering him by fraudulently ruining his credit. Ross’s wife, Pamela Ross, died of what authorities said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound Oct. 6, 2008. Law enforcement officers were outside their home at the time, and Jimmie Ross was in a General Sessions Court proceeding about the foreclosure. Sheriff Seals said at the time that he sent a deputy to the house because they believed those proceedings would come to a close that day, and that they knew Ross had guns at the house and had threatened authorities. Ross has denied making any threats. A Sevierville police officer was also sent to the house. However, Judge Rader actually gave Ross another 10 days to file an appeal in the case.

The officers at the scene that day reported they stayed on the road and off the property until Pamela Ross came outside to ask what was going on. When they told her, she reportedly said she wanted to go to her husband and she was going inside to change clothes. Deputies said they entered the house after hearing a gunshot from inside, and found Pamela Ross dead when they went inside. Jimmie Ross has said he blamed authorities for his wife’s death and that he doesn’t believe their account of events. He has said the bank didn’t have the right to foreclose on his home; other federal court documents indicate he has had issues over other debts and has sued the IRS over collection of income tax. n jfarrell@themountainpress.com

River of Life Outreach Church reaches out By Ellen Brown Staff Writer SEYMOUR — Thursia Padilla, a member of Seymour’s River of Life Outreach Church, was active in various ministries — but she still felt she needed to do more. “I had been praying, asking the Lord what we could do for the community,� Padilla said. Her answer was to coordinate an event at the church where businesses and individual members of the community could meet and fellowship. Businesses could set up information booths in the church parking lot free of charge, and families could see what was available — while enjoying food and entertainment. Gatlinburg rain barrel online auction runs through Sept. 24 From Submitted Reports GATLINBURG — The Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce Foundation, along with local artists, has launched an online rain barrel auction. The auction will run through Sept. 24, and all proceeds go directly to Pi Beta Phi’s Parks As Classrooms program. Barrels will be on display at City Hall, the post office, the Chamber and Food City. To bid on these handpainted barrels, visit www. gatlinburg.com.rainbarrel. Local artists painted six 55-gallon rain barrels to help raise awareness about water conservation and also to benefit Parks as Classroom. The program creates connected learning experiences for grades K-8 that use the cultural and natural resources of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. John Sevier Days Arts, Craft Show set for Knoxville Saturday, Sunday From Submitted Reports KNOXVILLE — Marble Springs State Historic Site, in conjunction with the South Doyle Area Homeowners Association, will be hosting the third annual John Sevier Days Arts and Crafts Show, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The festival will feature tours of the historic site, along with 18th century entertainment such as spinning, woodworking and open hearth cooking demonstrations. Participants can also watch a weapons demonstration, which will showcase tomahawks and period-appropriate firearms. Regional artisans and crafters will be showcas-

ing their wares; arts and crafts will also be available for sale. Various musical entertainers will perform throughout the weekend. “John Sevier Days is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the rich history we have in the South Knoxville area, and it allows us to highlight and commemorate the accomplishments and memory of John Sevier,” said Lisa Fall, board member for Marble Springs State Historic Home. Admission is $1 per person, which will go toward the fund to repair the Trading Post roof; park-

ing is free. Contest participation will also include a small fee. All activities take place at the historic site: 1220 W. Governor John Sevier Highway. Marble Springs is owned by the state and operated by the Gov. John Sevier Memorial Association. Sevier was the first governor of the state and the namesake of Sevier County. He became governor in 1796. He had a summer home on the farm known as Marble Springs from 1797 until his death on Sept 24, 1815.

Tina Michelle Henson Vick Tina Michelle Henson Vick, 43 of Seymour, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at UT Hospital. Tina was born June 1, 1966, in Knoxville. She graduated from Doyle High School in 1984. She was a member of the chorus and the Pop Ensemble. She attended Carson-Newman College and graduated with the last class of the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1987. Tina was an RN with Select Specialty at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Survivors: husband, Douglas “Eddie� Vick; sons, Joshua and Matthew; parents, Ethel Viola Henson and Jack Henson; sister and brother-in-law, Tanya and Breckenridge Morgan; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Doug and Evadeen Vick; sister-in-law, Becky Vick; three nephews; many special family members, cousins and friends. D.C. sniper mastermind’s execution set for November RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia judge on Wednesday set a Nov. 10 execution date for John Allen Muhammad, mastermind of the 2002 sniper attacks in the Washington, D.C., area that left 10 dead. Prince William County Circuit Judge Mary Grace O’Brien picked a Tuesday for the execution so that courts would be open the day before in case of any last-minute legal appeals. Jonathan Sheldon, Muhammad’s attorney, said Muhammad would appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court and ask Gov. Timothy M. Kaine for clemency. Muhammad was sentenced to death for the slaying of Dean Meyers, who was shot at a Manassas gas station during a three-week killing spree in October 2002 that left 10 dead in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

an important tool in our recruiting efforts. It’s a very competitive market out there when you’re trying to bring industry to your area. These incentives can make Sevier County more attractive.� Newton and other SCEDC officials used similar guidelines already in place in Greene and Jefferson counties to draft the proposed rules. They offer businesses the opportunity to earn credits that would give them exemptions from paying property taxes for certain amounts of time based on certain criteria. For instance, businesses can earn one point for every five jobs they plan to create or retain through a local project up to a maximum of five points, and up to 50 additional points for offering wages that are at or exceed the county’s per capita income. There are also offerings of 30 points that reward the amount of capital investment the company puts into its move and 10 points for hiring local workers. All of those are meant to encourage businesses to invest in the local economy and improve the lives of Sevier County residents, Newton said. The company’s tax break will be determined as the points are added up, with no PILOT incentive offered to those with 30 points or less and up to six years for 71 or more points. What that means is companies would be allowed to skip paying property taxes for the number of years their points earn them. After that time, the levy would be phased in, with a 20 percent bill for the first year after the incentive runs out, 40 percent for the next, 60 percent the following and 80 percent the year after that. Following the phasing, the

company would pay its full tax as usual. Companies that receive the breaks will be reviewed annually. If it’s determined they are not doing what they said they would to get the incentives, the county’s Industrial Board, which will govern the program, will have the prerogative to cut their incentives, Newton said. Though several county leaders opposed the Lisega deal, which Newton said will fall under the new guidelines if they’re adopted, for giving away too much, at least one SCEDC member is concerned they may actually not go far enough. “Is this enough?� SmartBank President Billy Carroll asked. “Are we aggressive enough in these benefits? Is this going to make us more aggressive than what surrounding communities are doing? I would just encourage us to be extremely aggressive with these.� Newton assured Carroll the program will be constantly evaluated to ensure it’s offering what it needs to. Beyond that, he said he’s confident the proposed plan is a good one. “I think we are going to be very aggressive with this,� Newton said. “This is just a proposal, though. It’s sort of a guide. We will be doing what we need to do to remain competitive.� Carroll eventually offered the motion to recommend the County Commission adopt the program, which passed unanimously. Before the county can recruit any new industries, though, the SCEDC has established it must buy more land for industrial parks. Newton told the group Wednesday a workable area has been located and officials are currently going through the process to check the site out.

The Spencer Clack chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution has provdied some information about the Constitution in recognition of Constitution Week Sept. 17-23: n Nowhere in the Constitution does it say, “It’s a free country.� n Amendment I does not include the words, “freedom of expression�; however. Amendment 1 does limit the freedom of speech/press/assembly for defamation, perjury, contempt of court, hate speech, size of public demonstrations, trade secrets, noise pollution, classified information and treason. n The only place in the Constitution with any reference to God is where the date is written: “Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty-seven�? n The Fifth Amendment states, “No person shall be ... deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law� and it protects us from double jeopardy and incrimination. However, the phrases “innocent until proven guilty� and “presumption of innocence� are not found in the Constitution. These phrases are derived from English law. n The U.S. Constitution is the oldest still in active use in the world today. n The 26th Amendment requires that 18-yearolds must be able to vote; however, states may allow persons younger than 18 to vote, if they choose. The qualifications for voters are left to the states as long as they do not conflict with in the Constitution. n Privacy is not specifically mentioned in the

Constitution, but over the years, the Supreme Court has made decisions that have established that the right to privacy is protected by virtue of the Ninth Amendment. n The phrase “separation of church and state� does not appear in the Constitution. Thomas Jefferson had written that the First Amendment erected a “wall of separation� between the church and the state and James Madison said it “drew a line.� n Inauguration Day is set in the 20th Amendment. The Presidential and Vice Presidential terms end, and then the next term begins on Jan. 20, following an election. For Senators and Representatives, it ends and begins on Jan. 3, following an election. n The only crime defined in the Constitution is treason. n The Constitution neither prohibits nor encourages that the president and the vice president be from the same party.

For the second year in a row, Gatlinburg-Pittman High junior Christina Lulich has submitted the winning art design for the Pittman Center Heritage Day shirts. The momma bear and cub are featured on the shirts, which will be available at the Saturday event. In addition, the original art work has been professionally matted and framed by Laurie and John Walker of FraMania. Bidders will have an opportunity to vie for the piece at the auction to be held during the event. Christina recently conducted her second annual yard sale to benefit Smoky Mountain Area Rescue Ministries, raising over $2,000 for that organization. She also produces a bi-monthly Christian newsletter, and is a member of Sevier County 4-H, Interact Club and Scrabble Club. Her goal is to become an architect. This year’s Heritage Day shirts are made from organic and recycled materials. Christina will be available at the T-shirt booth from 10 a.m. to noon to autograph shirts.

Nashville parents claim segregation NASHVILLE (AP) — The parents of a 6th grade student are challenging the Nashville school board’s effort to return children to neighborhood schools, claiming the rezoning is a pretext for resegregation. Nashville school zones were redrawn earlier this year after a 5-4 vote by the school board, with all black members but one voting against and all white members voting in favor. A judge already has ordered the school district to return a black child whose parents filed the law-

suit to the predominantly white school she attended last year after he learned that her new school had not provided students with textbooks. Assistant Metro Attorney Kevin Klein told the court in opening arguments Wednesday that students in many schools were without textbooks, and he called the rezoning plan “race neutral.” Klein said the rezoning was intended to give parents the opportunity to be involved in their children’s educations by

putting the students in neighborhood schools. He also said children who wanted to continue to attend schools outside of their neighborhoods could opt to do so, a claim the plaintiffs dispute. Frances Spurlock said in an interview and in court documents she made several attempts to keep her daughter at Bellevue Middle School, which she considers much better than her neighborhood school. She said her daughter was given a choice of schools,

but Bellevue was not among them. Her neighborhood school “ranked low on academics” and the other school she was allowed to attend “was under corrective action (failing) under No Child Left Behind,” according to the lawsuit. Spurlock said she is raising her daughter in the same house that she grew up in. But the neighborhood schools in predominantly black North Nashville still have many of the same problems they had when she was a child.

TORONTO (AP) — Drew Barrymore chose a real balancing act for her directing debut. She does it on wheels, directing and acting alongside “Juno” co-star E l l e n Page in “Whip It,” a rowdy tale of Barrmore rollerderby women. Barrymore had never put on skates before shooting the movie, spending a month alongside castmates learning the ropes in a roller-derby boot camp. Her training as a director has been going on for years, since she began producing movies in the 1990s, her credits including her “Charlie’s Angels” adventures and her Adam Sandler romance “50 First Dates.” Once they acquired the rights to roller-derby player Shauna Cross’ book “Whip It,” Barrymore and producing partner Nancy Juvonen began casting about for a director. Before long, Barrymore realized this was the one she had to direct herself.

Reporters all have ideologies It’s time for a change. Next month, I leave ABC News to start a weekly one-hour prime time show with Fox News. When I announced that on my blog (http://tinyurl.com/quu9j5), plenty of viewers said they were happy to have me leave. “Goodbye. You suck. You have found a much better home for your garbage reporting and backwards politics.” “Congratulations on the move to the network intellectually suited to your quasi-libertarian corporateapologist hackery!” Oh well, you can’t please everyone. I don’t expect that my libertarian beliefs will please everyone at Fox, either. Years ago, ABC hired me to do consumer reporting. When I wised up, deciding consumer “advocates” usually did more harm than good, that horrified some of my colleagues. When I did my first TV special, I pointed out that regulation itself, by stifling innovation, can make life less safe. Two producers angrily objected, saying, “No respectable journalist would say that.” The senior producer on the program smugly told me, “You just can’t say that on network TV.” ABC’s (now NBC’s) research director, said: “Why do a show on risk assessment? You should do something on diet or breast implants — something we know people will watch.” But give ABC credit. After bitter arguments, it ran the show, titled, “Are We Scaring You to Death?” A news division’s vice president said, “I don’t agree with you, but it’s a valid intellectual argument that deserves to be made.” We were all surprised when 17 million Americans watched. We got 3,000 letters, many from scientists who wrote: “Thank God, somebody’s finally saying these things. I can’t believe I saw that on network television.” So I kept doing those kinds of reports. My bosses often disagreed with my point of view, but they usually let me air it. But it was frustrating. My vision and that of my producers were often not in harmony. Too many stories I thought were important ± such as the land theft called eminent domain, or the FDA’s endangering people’s lives by withholding life-saving drugs — were not aired. So after 28 years, it’s time to move on. In my new job, I want to dig into the meaning of the words “liberty” and “limited government.” For many years, through Republican and Democratic administrations, we have been losing something vital in America: the commitment to individual liberty and the understanding that as government grows, liberty shrinks. Fox offers me more airtime and a new challenge. I’m still thinking about what I will do with my own show. Economic analyses of the latest screwball ideas in Washington — certainly. I also want to undertake exercises in understanding libertarianism, the philosophy of freedom, which used to be called “liberalism.” What do you think? You can help me shape the new program. I ask you for your ideas. Which interesting speakers should I book? What thought experiments should I try with a studio audience? Please let me know. Maybe I can even learn something from the hostile comments: “You are intelectually (sic) dishonest and a hack. I’m glad I won’t stumble upon your sloppy one sided reporting ever again.” “Your right-wing rhetoric was hard to disguise. You were found out when Obama was elected President.” It’s interesting to explore the premises here. I have been one of the few reporters on mainstream network TV who did not hide his political beliefs. Viewers know I am for individual liberty and the free market, and against government coercion. I thought that this candor might earn me some credit from those who disagree with me. After all, by putting my views out there, everyone can judge my reports accordingly. But — surprise! — it did not win me much credit with those who disagreed. Instead, many act as if I am the only reporter who has an ideology. Of course, that’s absurd. Every reporter has political beliefs. The difference is that I am upfront about mine. New book about infamous murders a must-read for locals There aren’t many people still around who remember the Perry’s Camp murders in Sevier County. But two men who researched the incident have produced a book that details the infamous crime. Steve Watson, deputy chief of the Sevier County Sheriff’s Department, and retired FBI agent Bob Allen have written “The Perry’s Camp Murders,” an account of the killing of Charles Perry and Josie Law. The two writers will be signing copies of their book on Saturday at the site of the murders. Allen and Watson will be at the murder location on Flat Branch Road starting at 10 a.m. The case was one of the most

notorious in Sevier County. Rumors had it that Perry had been beaten and tortured before he was killed. Two of the suspects, Claude Robertson and Hermie Lee Jones, pleaded guilty shortly after the trial started while a third suspect was released. Few details came out during a trial, and there were no appeals that would have meant transcripts or additional facts on the record. The authors wanted those details and hatched the idea for the book, following research into the case. They were talking about the Perry’s Camp murders last year and decided to put together a book about the crime. Watson and Allen reviewed old

newspaper clippings and other records to compile a timeline of events, and talked to people who knew the victims and the suspects. While some say the criminals tortured Perry to find out where he was hiding a large sum of cash, Allen and Watson believe there was a feud between Robertson and Perry, thus making revenue the true motive. The book is a fine read, a welldocumented and fascinating tale of something that happened right in our backyard during the late 1940s. Try to make it over to Flat Branch Road on Saturday to meet Watson and Allen, talk to them about the book and — they’d really like this part — buy a copy.

Stop chewing the fat; state must fight obesity Put down that doughnut and think about this: Statistics show that about 30 percent of adults in the Volunteer state are obese, and the number for children is equally shocking. Those numbers rank Tennessee as the nation’s fourth-fattest state. ... A recent study at Ohio State University found that people who used food stamps were more likely to be obese. More Tennesseans are receiving food stamps than ever — almost one in six — and the numbers are only expected to increase. At Ohio State, researchers

tracked 10,000 people, some on and some not on food stamps, over 14 years and found that poverty, lack of access to health food and differences in nutritional education contributed to obesity rates. The study tracked people between 1989 and 2002. ... The concern then becomes making sure that we as a nation, a state and a city create enough educational opportunities that will help people on or off food stamps make the right decisions when buying food. For example, a soon-to-be-released new book titled Creating Equal Opportunities for Healthy

Weight suggests that local governments should work with community leaders and others to eliminate inequities such as exposure to positive social, economic and environmental influences in an effort to create health equity. Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, and the National WIC Association, a nonprofit that helps enable pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants and children considered high-risk to receive nutrition and food assistance and health-care referrals, are partnering to help children and their families have healthier

options and build healthy habits. Such initiatives should be welcomed. As Agriculture Secretary Vilsack said, obesity is a healthcare concern and a precursor to a number of chronic diseases. Just a few years ago the state Department of Health reported that Tennessee was the thirdhighest state regarding cardiovascular disease heart disease and stroke. Tennessee was also thirdhighest in diabetes mortality. What ties those things together is being overweight. So all Tennesseans should be concerned about reducing obesity.

G-P begins its district stretch By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer GATLINBURG — The Gatlinburg-Pittman Highlanders have come through the early part of their schedule unblemished against Oneida, Cosby and Sullivan East, but now comes the start of the real test with six of their final seven contests against District 3-AA rivals. This Friday night, the Highlanders will travel to Gibbs for a district showdown with the Eagles. “This is a big game for us, our first district game,” said 38th-year G-P head football coach Benny Hammonds. The two programs used to share a rivalry through the 1980s and into the ‘90s, but this year’s battle will be a renewal. “We haven’t played them in years, but we used to have a real strong rivalry,” said Hammonds.

“But these boys are too young to even remember those big games, but the coaching staffs have been involved in a lot of them.” Although the Eagles have scored 105 points in three contests this year with a potent veerstyle option offense, Hammonds believes his team has a good chance to match up for a competitive battle. “They do a real good job of attacking the edges with their offense,” said Hammonds. “It’s going to put a lot of pressure on our defense to get them stopped, but our defense has kindly been the strong point of our season up to this point. “So, hopefully we can meet the challenge one more time this Friday Cobey Hitchcock/The Mountain Press night. SCHS needs to avoid letdown By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer SEVIERVILLE — The Sevier County High School Smoky Bears may be coming off a big upset win at DobynsBennett, and they may have started the year 4-0 for the second consecutive season ... but they’d better not take anything for granted against the homestanding Cocke County Roosters, losers of 21 straight games, this Friday night. In his 18 seasons with the program, Sevier County head football coach Steve Brewer has seen about everything. He’s been warning his team about taking anything for granted, even against a competitor like the Fighting Cocks. “Our concern is how we’re preparing, and how we are going to come out an play Friday night,” said Brewer. “I’ve been coaching a long time, and I’ve seen some bad things happen when you don’t come out prepared to play. “That’s when you get

EDEN PRAIRIE — For all of the negative publicity produced by Brett Favre’s latest retirement flip-flop, fans have flocked to watch him in action — and buy his memorabilia. Over just a 10-day span following his arrival in Minnesota, Favre’s No. 4 Vikings jersey — still a strange sight — was the top seller on the NFL’s merchandise Web site for the entire sales period from April 1-Aug. 28. It costs $80. Newness always helps: Jay Cutler ranked second and Michael Vick was fourth during that timeframe. The Favre phenomenon, however, seems like it’s just one of a kind. Perhaps the only person surprised to hear about Favre’s jersey-selling success was his most prominent Vikings teammate. “I think I’m more popular than Brett Favre, but he’s got an advantage,” running back Adrian Peterson said. “I think what gets him over the top is the Packer fans that live here also.” So, Peterson was asked, have you gotten one for yourself? “I’ve been scared to sit here and ask him for one,” he said, smiling. Peterson shook his head as he recalled the mother of a high school friend approaching him after a recent game in Houston to ask him if he could get Favre to autograph a jersey for her. “She’s never asked me for a jersey, ever,” Peterson said. “I was like, ’All right. I’ll see what I can do.”’ Favre was also asked Wednesday if he had considered acquiring one of these items for himself. “I don’t think you can get any,” the quarterback deadpanned. “They’re real hard to find right now. I only say that because friends and family have asked if I can get one. The only ones I have are the ones I play in.” On the football side, Favre has brought stability and a record-setting resume to the most important position on Minnesota’s offense. Off the field, the wow factor of having Favre on the team has helped take some of the attention away from the other stars such as Peterson. “Normally people come up to me and ask me to get this and get that,” Peterson said. “Now flip it around.” It has alleviated some of the interview requests from reporters, too. “Now it’s not all on me, so that’s cool,” Peterson said. The Vikings aren’t among the top 10 selling teams on NFLShop.com, one sign of how popular Favre truly is.

On a smaller scale of negative public relations, Cutler unhappily forced his way out of Denver and was traded to Chicago. And Favre has frustrated fans — not to mention alienated many loyalist supporters of his old team in Green

Bay — with his indecision. The polarization factor, said sports marketer Matt Delzell, has actually been a boon for Favre. “Now that he’s got some ’haters’ the people who do like him are especially more likely to go out and buy his jerseys,” Delzell said in an interview from his Dallas-area office. He works for entertainment marketing agency Davie Brown. Favre will likely always be a major generator of buzz. “That’s why you have celebrities with 2 million followers on Twitter,” Delzell said. “There is an increasing obsession about the celebrity world, with sports figures and with anything new and fresh. It just continues to grow.” Stephen Ross, a sport management professor at the University of Minnesota, echoed that theory. “Just the intensity of the Favre sales is I think surprising for anybody, but if you look at it there hasn’t been a whole lot of movement of players around the NFL this year. So people are going to be less likely to buy jerseys, especially with the economy,” Ross said. “New and novel is the way to go.”

JACKSONVILLE — In a game of numerous ejections and an extra inning, the Jacksonville Suns took Game 1 of the Southern League Championship Series with a 6-5 win over the Tennessee Smokies at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Tuesday night. Chris De La Cruz hit an RBI single to end the game in the 10th, giving Jacksonville a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five championship series. The Suns took the early 3-0 lead with a Kevin Randel bases-clearing double in the bottom of the first. Starter Chris Carpenter responded well after the first, and finished the night pitching 4-1/3 innings, while allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Tennessee countered with a double of their own, as Welington Castillo brought in a pair of runs in the top of the second to make it a 3-2 game. The Smokies tied the game in the fourth, as Tyler Colvin’s RBI double brought in Blake Lalli to even the game at three. Tennessee reliever Dustin Sasser got the Smokies out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth, striking out Scott Cousins to end the inning. Sasser pitched an inning and two thirds without allowing a hit. Randel was ejected

However, the Smokies rallied in the ninth off of the 2009 Southern League saves leader Matt Peterson. Jonathan Mota’s RBI single tied the game at four. Mota was able to advance from first to third on two consecutive wild pitches, and then tried to score on a fly out by Russ Canzler. Mota tagged and then was ruled out at the plate by home plate umpire Chris Ward. Tennessee manager Ryne Sandberg was ejected arguing Ward’s call. After Marcos Mateo pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth, the Smokies took advantage of an opportunity in the top of the tenth. After Ty Wright gave the Smokies runners on the corners with one out, Jacksonville intentionally walked Blake Lalli to load the bases. After

Tyler Colvin struck out, Marquez Smith hit a single that scored Adduci to give the Smokies the goahead run. Wright was ruled out trying to score during the play to end the inning. Brian Schlitter retired the first two Suns in order before Davis tied the game with a solo home run. The inning continued when Ryan Klosterman singled on a controversial call at first base. The initial ruling by the umpires ruled Klosterman out on the play to end the frame, but after an argument by Jacksonville manager Brandon Hyde, the Smokies were forced to go back onto the field to continue the inning. Bryan Peterson followed with a single with another close play at the bag that allowed Klosterman to advance to third. The De La Cruz single ended the game, giving the win to Garrett Parcell with Schlitter taking the loss and his first blown save of the postseason. The Smokies return home for Game 3, starting at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

We live far away from his parents, but there are times when he wants to talk and visit with them, often followed by periods of zero contact for months on end because he is hurt again. His parents have taken some steps to improve the situation, and they would like to start over. Right now, however, Sam isn’t willing. He hasn’t spoken to them in four months and gets upset if I suggest talking to them on his behalf. I’m concerned that this is an unhealthy relationship and that his parents may blame me for the lack of contact. Our church is helping Sam learn about forgiveness, but he isn’t there yet. Should I keep up communication with his folks or let him deal with it? -- Sam’s Wife Dear Wife: You are kind to want your husband to have a relationship with his parents, but it is up to Sam to decide what he can handle. Tell Sam you’d like to send his parents cards on holidays and birthdays, just to keep in touch, but beyond that, you will not get involved unless he asks you to. Don’t worry about his parents assessing blame. Your job is to support your husband, not his parents. We’re glad he’s discussing this with clergy. It should help. Dear Annie: I am 23 with a year-old baby, but I think my hormones are still out of whack. Since becoming pregnant, my

temper and anxiety have been at an all-time high. It’s affecting my relationship with my family, and I’m scared I might one day end up hurting someone or walking out the door. I don’t want to feel like this, but I don’t know what to do because I don’t have health insurance. Can I just go to a hospital and ask them to draw blood for a hormonal test? Should I get counseling? I’m willing to do anything that will help. -- Going Crazy in California Dear California: A small percentage of women experience depression during and after pregnancy, and you are smart to recognize the problem and want to get better. Talk to your pediatrician and ob-gyn about support groups and available medical help in your area. Meanwhile, let your family know you need them. Most new mothers suffer from sleep deprivation, which feeds into your stress levels. Ask for assistance. Take a nap when your child does. Get some exercise. Taking care of an invalid is not easy, and the worry and effort drags a person down until she is unwell herself.
