On this past Friday morning, Erev Tisha B’av, our grandson was involved in an accident on Route 306 opposite Maple Leaf Rd. He was hit and flew to the side of the road. Lying there lifeless, passersby wanted to help by calling Hatzoloh and deciding what to do at that moment. A chashuva Monsey resident, R’ Shua Wasserman, who himself is a father of nine children and also a Kohain happened to be nearby. As he approached the child, persons nearby were saying not to touch the body. R’ Shua acted immediately by bending down to the child and calling out, “Yingele Chaim, wake up.”

At the hospital, it was determined that only leg bones were broken and casting was done. The child was kept for observation for two days, because of the impact of the vehicle on his body. He is B”H home and recuperating. Our Hakoras Hatov knows no bounds to Reb. Shua Wasserman for his fast action on getting the child to respond quickly.

YOURVOICE Replies to the Tutoring Dilemma:

I’m not an educator or writer. However, I can identify with the letter writer’s pain and struggles. As a mother, I have found that in today’s day and age, there are so many therapies available. Even though your child may not need glasses, there’s a possibility that she may need therapy with the eyes. Sometimes the eyes do not coordinate and function with the brain. She may be unaware that she has a problem, and such a problem would slow her down in understanding what she needs. There are other things that may need to be addressed. I suggest she get in contact with Dr. Jeffrey Rubin: 55 Old Turnpike Rd, Nanuet. The phone number is 845-623-3500. Or Dr. Weintraub, who’s located in NJ, near the George Washington Bridge area. I don’t have her phone number. There’s also a Dr. Siwoff in Chester, NJ who specializes with children who may need prism glasses. Many people have seen great results. She may also need the help of such therapies as provided by Neurolinks or Arrowsmith. They address many learning disability issues. The quicker your daughter gets the help she needs, the quicker she will become a confident, happy, and successful adult, B’ezras

Your daughter sounds like a wonderful girl, and understandably, her happiness means the world to you. It’s tough to watch our children struggle in school, counting the days until it’s finally over, so that they can enjoy a welldeserved, carefree summer vacation. Summertime is your daughter’s chance to have fun and to shine; the last thing you want to do is to deprive her of these two months of freedom by burdening her with that dreaded schoolwork. It is important to realize, however, that our job as parents isn’t to provide our children with a comfortable and stressfree life. Rather, it is our responsibility to ensure that they have the tools they need to deal with the challenges that will inevitably be thrown their way. Nobody can go through life without having to face some obstacles, whether big or small. By following the school’s recommendations and having a tutor for a few hours a week, you can actually equip your daughter with the skills necessary to succeed during the school year. Her summer still can, and should, remain a fun-filled and joyful experience. Yes, it will be a

hard sell, but it is important to explain that while having fun is wonderful, being b’simcha doesn’t mean to avoid having to do anything unpleasant. It is ironic, and I’m sorry if this sounds harsh, that your wanting her to be happy may actually be contributing to her unhappiness. Imagine how much happier your daughter will feel if she can face the upcoming school year with a sense of confidence, thanks to the newly acquired skills that the extra tutoring provided. Her happiness will be deeper and more gratifying, because it will stem from her own sense of accomplishment.

Replies on the Garbage Issue: I have been reading with interest the discussion about the garbage-specifically the boxes being left outside and littering the streets. I have a solution which I think is a win-win for all parties involved. I have been running a moving boxes g’mach for several years with a friend. We get most of our boxes from orders that people get from the stores-just like the boxes you find in the streets. There are people who bring their grocery order boxes to us, flattened, and there are others who take them from us when they move. Over the years we have probably given out thousands of boxes. If people would simply flatten their clean grocery order boxes before they put them on the street, those who are moving would probably take them, instead of paying the grocery stores for boxes. This is a win-win situation for all. People take an extra few minutes to do a chesed and flatten the boxes before putting them out, and then others can take them and use them! Let’s try it! ~ The ‘Moving Boxes G’mach’

Dear Newcomers, We’re sorry to hear you were bothered by the letter stating that the garbage was a result of the newcomers. If you take care of keeping your property clean, don’t take this personally. We’re not pointing any fingers on specific individuals. What we Monsey’ers are trying to say is: Monsey, as a whole is a clean beautiful place. However, with the new overflow of residents, K”H, there is just a lot more trash. The right thing for each individual to do is make sure you have enough garbage cans to keep the garbage bags in, for cleanliness purposes, and of course to keep cats, skunks, and bears away-in addition to being on top of your children to keep the property free of loose garbage. Again, we welcome you gladly to our town, but please, help us maintain achdus and a positive, calm, and happy Monsey atmosphere.

I can’t agree to what was said that there’s almost no garbage in the city. As a frequent visitor to Williamsburg, 99% of the time getting out of the car means opening the car door into piles of garbage bags and boxes. That certainly isn’t a sight (or smell) you experience in Monsey. Not that the Williamsburg residents are to blame; that is just how it is there, and that’s something their officials need to take care of. On the same note, Monsey residents are not to blame either. If someone is unhappy with how the garbage system is handled, you can voice your opinion or complaint to Community Outreach Center or other town officials. This is not the Yiddishe derech to make a fight and a fuss out of narishkeiten. Please make a Kiddush Hashem! ~ P.F.

Two children suffered mild injuries when a deck loaded with children collapsed in Monsey on July 21. The deck was loaded with children at the time it gave way and fell to the ground, about one story high.

NEWS & VIEWS TOWN OF RAMAPO SETS DATE FOR WARD VOTE BALLOT COUNT The Town of Ramapo has set a date of July 29 to count thousands of ballots that will decide whether voters approved the “ward system” of electing Town Board members by district, after the State Supreme Court Appellate Division ruled last month to count all ballots in the September 2014 election, overruling Supreme Court Judge Margaret Garvey’s invalidation of the Ramapo election last fall.

The story of the Ramapo “ward system” vote goes back over two years, to September of 2012, when Preserve Ramapo activists Michael Parietti and Robert Romanowski filed a petition with the Town of Ramapo seeking to hold referendums on the creation of a town ward system as well as an increase in the number of Town Board members from four to six. Fighting through various legal hurdles, they succeeded in their pursuit, holding a vote on the question of whether or not wards should be established in Ramapo’s local elections.

The election, which took place on September 30, 2014, asked Ramapo voters to decide if they should add two legislators to the four-member local board and if the members should be elected based on the area where they lived, not by a town-wide vote. The proposed system of districts, known as the “ward” system, would replace the current system of the entire district voting for the entire legislative body. Parietti and Romanowski claimed the six-member ward system would better represent parts of town that could otherwise be easily outvoted. The ward system was also seen as a way to counter the influence of the growing Yiddish Monsey community in the local election.

Crispy Chocolate Chip Cookie For those of you who like really thin and crispy cookies, your search has ended. Here is the ultimate crispy chocolate chip cookie.

The Ultimate Chocolate Cookie

INGREDIENTS

Most dark chocolate chip cookies call for cocoa in the batter. I find that gives the batter a very crumbly consistency. The melted chocolate in this recipe gives the cookie a real chocolaty flavor and a pretty shine once it’s finished baking.

4 sticks margarine, at room temperature 1 cup sugar 3 cups light brown sugar 4 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

INGREDIENTS

3 ½ cups flour

8 ounces semisweet baking chocolate

1 ½ teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons baking powder

½ stick margarine

1 bag mini chocolate chips

2 eggs

INSTRUCTIONS

¾ cup brown sugar

1. Preheat

1 tablespoon vanilla sugar

oven to 375°. Cream margarine and sugars until smooth. Add eggs and vanilla. Slowly add all the dry ingredients. When everything is well incorporated, add chocolate chips.

2/3 cup flour ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 bag chocolate chips

2. Drop 3 tablespoons of cookie

dough onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. These cookies will spread a lot, so only put 8 cookies on a cookie sheet at a time.

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350°. In the microwave, melt the chocolate and the margarine in 20 second increments, until completely melted.

3. Bake until golden for about

15 minutes. If you like your cookies a little bit more chewy decrease the baking time to 10 – 12 minutes.

In a separate bowl, mix eggs and sugars. Slowly pour in melted chocolate. Add the dry ingredients; then add the chocolate chips.

Newport is most famously known for its impressive mansions. During the Gilded Age, Newport, Rhode Island became the summer playground for the rich and famous, and many prominent and wealthy families, like the Vanderbilts and the Astors built their summer “cottages” there, opulent and magnificent mansions that were used as their summer homes. Ten of them are open for touring and one is open as a museum, while others have been converted to upscale hotels. We will be featuring the two most popular visitor choices, the Vanderbilt Mansions. The Breakers and Marble House are both toured via self-guided audio tours, with a choice of a main tour or a children’s tour.

The Breakers, the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages,” is a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America. The property, home to a wooden house called The Breakers, was purchased by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, a grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, who commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt to design this 70-room Italian Renaissance-style palazzo. He directed an international team of craftsmen, artisans, and the greatest artists to assist with the furnishing, fixtures, and sculpting. The backyard is a sprawling manicured lawn, set against the backdrop of the glorious ocean. It is absolutely enchanting!

Marble House, another Vanderbilt “cottage,” was built between 1888 and 1892, by the younger brother of Cornelius II, the proprietor of The Breakers. The cost of the house was reported in contemporary press accounts to be $11 million, of which $7 million was spent on 500,000 cubic feet of marble, which is Marble House’s popular feature.

Touro Synagogue This synagogue makes the whole Newport, Rhode Island experience special. The oldest Shul in the United States, Touro resonates deeply. On a national level, it is considered to be one of the most architecturally distinguished buildings of 18th Century America.

The Cliff Walk is a world-famous public access walk that combines the natural beauty of the Newport shoreline with the architectural history of Newport’s Gilded Age. Spanning 2.5 miles, parts of the walk are a rough trail over the natural rugged New England rocky shoreline, where walkers are treated to a 360-degree breathtaking view. With the harbor on one side, the backsides of some of the mansions on the other, and the expanses of grass, this shoreline experience is a spectacular one.

It is amazing and so significant that the very first president of the United States traveled to Rhode Island to visit this shul. He reassured the congregation in a warm eloquent letter that the Yidden, “Stock of Abraham,” are a very valued and welcomed community to the United States. He promised these exile-persecuted Yidden all the freedoms proffered by the constitution. This original letter, written In Washington’s elegant cursive writing, is prominently displayed in the synagogue. You will be moved when you see it.

While in the Shul, take note of the trapdoor, which the Sefardi Yidden built behind the bimah. This tradition stemmed from their horrific experience during the Inquisition.

Decorating Your Home with Photos: Tips and Suggestions Ideas and Inspiration by: Ballard Designs

“Fill a house with love and it becomes a home….” Whether you’re hanging one large piece or a lot of small ones, determining the proper placement of your family photos or artwork can sometimes seem daunting. Here’s a guide on how to hang wall art to make the process a little bit easier, and maybe even fun. A fireplace or mantel is always the focal point of a room. When hanging art over such an area, it’s a good idea to make the grouping about the same size as the fireplace opening or mantel surface. One large piece or several small pieces that appear as one unit is a great solution. A great way to test an arrangement before putting hammer to nail is by laying everything out on a table or on the floor. Move the pieces around until you have an

arrangement that you like. Laying the pieces out on a large piece of kraft paper or wrapping paper is an even better method, as this allows you to trace around each piece and mark the hanging points. Then, tape the paper to the wall and hammer in the nails. Remove the paper, and voila! As a general rule, hang the photos so that the center point of the piece or grouping is at approximately eye level; think of groupings as a single unit. You may want to consider hanging a grouping slightly lower in a living room, since you are sitting down when you are looking at it.

SUGGESTED LAYOUTS: Spacing for Even Numbers of Prints Tight spacing = 1-2” Normal spacing = 4-6” Large Spaces: A tightly grouped even number of pieces works great to balance out a large space or a high wall. Note that large spaces can handle slightly larger spacing than small spaces. Small Spaces: A tightly grouped even number of pieces in a small area, such as a stair landing, is perfect and gives a window effect. Light colors enhance this effect. Hanging Pieces Horizontally

Art hung over a piece of furniture should not be wider than the width of the furniture, a general principle being that the art should be about 75% the width of the furniture.

Tip: Use your hand, fingers closed, to determine spacing in this scenario.

Perfect for a hallway or sofa wall, hanging frames horizontally allows you to achieve some volume without appearing crowded. For this scenario, an odd number of pieces is more attractive to the eye and is visually balanced; a normal spacing of 4-6” is recommended.

Symmetrical Placement Great for pieces that are similar in size, shape, and subject matter, this method allows you to create a grouping that has visual balance and is perfect over large furniture collections or focal points in a room.

Multiples and the Vertical Line When you are grouping four or more pieces, one above the other, you should consider a vertical line, meaning that the frames should be visually balanced on both sides of an imaginary vertical line. Too much ‘weight’ on one side or the other will make the group seem awkward and unbalanced. Again in this scenario, it is a good idea to make sure the photography is similar either in color scheme, frame style, or subject matter.

Asymmetrical Placement This is a great solution when you have a group of prints that aren’t necessarily the same but share at least one similar element, such as subject matter or color scheme. You can asymmetrically arrange the pieces so that they still achieve a nice balance. If you have two larger pieces, try staggering them by hanging one lower than the other, so that top and bottom don’t match. Grouping larger and smaller pieces helps to create interest. The same is true for vertical and horizontal pieces in the same grouping.

Esther is a fictional story based on real people and real events. Esther grew up in the Hungarian village, Selisht, surrounded by her loving family. Esther’s spirit, wit, and unending generosity, combined with the boundless love she received from her parents and grandparents stand her in good stead in this summer story. Although this story takes place in 1933, when life in the European shtetel was still peaceful, these same attributes helped her overcome the terrible trials she faced years later during the war. The author, a granddaughter of Esther, is grateful every day for the deep love she was blessed to receive from her Babby Esther, and is doing all she can to continue her kindness.

Chapter 3 The Chase “Esther, I need you to go buy some supplies from the shop,” Babby told Esther that afternoon. The little shop, called the Gevelb, was right

next door, owned by Esther’s Mima Faige, and Babby often sent Esther to buy household items. Esther didn’t like going, as she feared Mima Faige and her sharp tongue, but she never told that to Babby. “I need kerosene for three lei and a box of matches for two lei; a quarter pound sugar cubes is 4 lei; 10 decaf

Esther’s Family Zaidy: Zaidy Chaim cares deeply about his family, and takes great pride in providing for them. He is an honest laborer who works hard to make a living in the poor Hungarian village, Selisht. Zaidy is considered a rich man because he owns a cow and a field. However, the field is owned by several partners who can never agree on selling the property, so Zeidy’s wealth is of no practical use. Babby: Babby Malka is a queen. She grew up in the city and appreciates beauty and elegance. Babby knows nothing of milking cows, growing vegetables or whitewashing blackened walls, which are the basics of a woman’s chores in the village. However, Babby Malka knows how to embroider the most exquisite tablecloths and knit the finest silk socks. Babby’s home is always impeccably clean.

Tatashe: Tatashe is a serious Talmid Chachum, who spends his entire day and a big part of the night studying Torah. Zaidy Chaim and Babby Malka are very proud of their fine learned son-inlaw who is a true credit to the family. Esther loves Tatashe dearly. She enjoys listening to his Torah learning, and wouldn’t think of ever interrupting him. Mamashe: Mamashe is gentle and kind. She treats Tatashe, Zaidy, and Babby with boundless respect, as she works side by side with Babby to keep the household running smoothly. Having grown up in Babby’s care, Mamashe is the perfect combination of a city and village girl. She embroiders, knits, and sews clothing that is unsurpassed in elegance and style, and yet she has no fear of the cow, which she cares for with the same gentleness as she cares for her children.

Esther: The oldest of three children, Esther is surrounded by the love of her dear grandparents and parents. At age 10, Esther is a free-spirited girl who is fun loving and daring and has a heart as boundless as the village fields. Yet for all her spirit, Esther is always respectful to her elders, for that is how she was brought up. Mutche: Mutche is a good natured seven-year-old child. He spends plenty of time tagging along with Esther, whom he adores. Esther loves him too, which is why he is always welcome to join in her play. The rest of the time, he sits on a tall stool right near Tatashe who is teaching Mutche the Siddur. Ruchele: The baby Ruchele is at the center of all the activity at home. At age two, she gets into everyone’s way, except when the door is left ajar and she makes her escape. The noise of the chickens and the mooing of the cow alerts Mamashe to go search for Ruchele once again.

But Mima Faige would have none of it, and sent Esther home without the supplies. Esther knew that Babby would never owe money to anyone and not pay it, and she disliked Mima Faige deeply for shaming her and for insulting Babby Malka’s honor. On that day, as Mima Faige handed Esther the items she requested and carefully recorded the transaction on the drawer, she told Esther, “Esther, take these home to your grandmother quickly and then come back. I need you to run an errand for me, as the Gevelb is too busy for me to leave.” Esther had half a mind to ignore Mima Faige’s instructions and go play in the shul’s yard with her friends, but then she thought about the next day; that Babby will likely send her shopping again, and then what will Mima Faige say to her? She’d rather not find out. So she came back to the shop. Upon her return, Mima Faige instructed her, “Go to the chicken coop in my backyard, Esther, fetch

Esther took chase with Clarel and Frimet hot on her heels. Soon, all the village children were running after the happy chicken, the town crier and his discouraging news of tax inspectors all but forgotten.

CHOOSING A REAL ESTATE AGENT by Ann Zeilingold

One of the most challenging parts of buying or selling a home is picking a good real estate agent. How do you know who’s good and who’s not? Can you rely on word of mouth, or should you do some investigation on your own? Whether you’re a buyer or a seller, there are things you can and should do to assess a real estate agent’s past performance in order to gauge their potential success for finding or selling your home. Here are ideas to ponder when choosing the right agent for yourself. Sometimes you will find an agent through some form of advertising, be it word-of-mouth referrals, internet, or an open house. Because we don’t typically have the information about real estate agents that we have about other service professionals, it’s important that you do some homework before making the decision on which realtor to use. Make phone calls: Ask potential agents for a list of what they’ve listed and sold the last twelve months. Be sure to ask the agent if any of the clients listed will

be pleased or disappointed, before you begin making phone calls. When you speak with past clients ask what the asking price was and then what the sales price was. Ask about their overall experience. If you chose the “top agent,” ask the clients the following questions: Do you enjoy working with a team? Do you get through to your agent, and do you get the answers that you need right away? A good agent is worth his weight in gold. Two different families can have different experiences with the same agent. It is very important that you enjoy working with your agent, whether they work solo or with a team. Your agent needs to assess your needs accurately. If your agent does so by showing you homes that work for you and addressing your needs, you are in a win-win situation. Another question to ask is how long has the agent been in business. Experience is key in any business, but that doesn’t mean that a new agent can’t be wonderful. If an agent is new, find out if he has a mentor, This way, you can get the attention that only

a less busy agent can provide while benefitting from the experience of a seasoned agent that is so necessary when negotiating or when handling a crisis situation. Also, consider the difference between a parttime real estate agent who sells a few properties for friends and relatives and someone who treats it as a full-time business venture. As Coleen Miller, a realtor with Keller Williams in Scarsdale, points out, “There are a lot of agents out there that do this part time, and they can’t provide the level of service that somebody who is doing this day-in and day-out, can provide.” There are some questions to ask of your prospective realtor, too: How will you communicate with me? Who will be my point of contact? A communication lapse of a few hours can mean the difference between an accepted offer and a missed opportunity. With that in mind, choose an agent who responds quickly in the mode of communication that works for you, whether it’s email, text, phone, or fax.

“Quite frankly as realtors, our job is to be able to communicate the way the consumer wants,” Naomi Streicher of Realty teams says. “Finding a realtor who will work with you in the way that you need to work is great.” Communication is especially important for the buyer who is house-hunting from afar. Her office has clients in other areas who want to communicate with the agents via chat or FaceTime.
