ENTHRALLING READ ALL of your columns keep me enthralled! To point out the outstanding ones: Food and Family - Recipes are delicious, easy and beautifully presented. Draizy and Miriam really transformed me into a balabuster... Parenting Advice - Faiga Really knows what's going on in a NORMAL yiddishe home...and how to handle it the right way as well! Her tips make so much sense. It's apparent that this is coming from someone with hands-on experience and hashkafa. FYI- Creative, informational, and halachos as well. An interesting and light read. Thank you!

RE: THE PROBLEM WITH GRAY I wish to add my own experience to that of the writer of the problem with her husband’s gray minivan. My husband dropped me off in front of 20 Ashel Lane to go give Mazel Tov for a simcha. As I exited the building five minutes later, I noticed that someone was occupying the front passenger seat. I assumed it was my daughter, who had been in the back seat. I approached the car, opened the front passenger door, and announced, “I see you took my seat!” Two strange pairs of eyes stared back at me. Suddenly, I registered loud honking coming from right behind that minivan. I turned. My husband was signalling frantically from his identical minivan. After I related what I had just done, it took a while till my husband calmed down and was able to resume driving. That article really resonated with me! E.D.

A TIPPING TIP I’d like to take a short moment and remind the community about a group of people often forgotten. They are the people who awake at the crack of dawn to escort your children to school and cheder, despite the rain, snow, or freezing weather. They are the people who smile at your children as they board the bus for their long day in school. They are the ones who try very hard to be punctual as they safely pick your children up and drop them off every day, despite the narrow streets, traffic, and other parents that may not always be running on schedule. They try to drive carefully, despite the rambunctious children. They try to be calm- even when facing stressed-out parents, anxious because of the long day either ahead of or behind them. They are your Yanky, Chayale, or Moishy’s bus drivers. They are dedicated individuals serving the klal in an underappreciated manner, with the zechus of bringing Yiddishe kinder to learn Torah. These are the baal hagalos of today’s generationsimple people serving their community in an unassuming way, providing a valuable service to those unable to bring their own children to learn Torah on a daily basis. So I’d like to ask you

Monsey parents, that when you pull out those envelopes to send a Chanukah tip to your children’s dedicated teachers, please remember their dedicated drivers as well. Just imagine how different life would be without them. A Monsey Bus Manager

RE: THE CHANGING FACE OF MONSEY I'd like to add my two cents to the discussion about the changing face of Monsey. I believe we shouldn't turn this into a personal matter, of old-timers vs. newcomers, but rather step back and take a realistic look at what's taking place. Most readers remember the days when they were newly married, with perhaps one little baby in the picture. Schedules were predictable, the noise-level at home was low, no smudges on windows or torn recipe books, no beeping buses and missing shoes, plenty of privacy to talk with your spouse, and more than enough peace and quiet. But then the children started coming, and all of a sudden your life spins around school events, bus schedules, homework, dentist appointments, outgrown shoes, temper tantrums, and Continued on page 40

Your Voice Continued from page 38 plenty more. Schedules are unpredictable, the noise level at home often escalates at certain hours, bedtimes drag on forever, and you can't find the time to TALK to your spouse! Well, that's what comes along with the blessing of a growing family. The same thing is happening on a communitywide level. As our community is growing b"H at an explosive rate ‫כ"י‬, we are experiencing the growth spurt in the form of a housing crisis that even frenzied construction can't solve quickly enough, a school crisis, transportation crisis, etc. The frustration expressed by some Monsey old-timers can be compared to the very normal griping some mothers go through: "Why is this house never clean? Why can't I ever finish the laundry?" Well, that's the reality of a growing family. Likewise, the changes taking place in Monsey are the reality of a growing community. So let go of your gripes and grievances. Mothers (and fathers, and siblings...) of growing families must learn to accept that they cannot always live in a spic and span, quiet, and predictable environment. You will be healthier and happier if you embrace the challenges with a smile and thank Hashem that these are your problems!

In the same vein, we should thank Hashem for the growth of Klal Yisroel, embrace the challenges that come along with these changes, and grow as a person and a Yid with middos tovos and ahavas Yisroel. And of course, if you really can't live without the space, peace and quiet and huge expanses of greenery, by all means - take advantage of the skyrocketing real estate prices to sell your home and become a pioneer in an outlying village. You will struggle for a few years without a heimishe grocery store nearby, or a selection of shuls and schools, but you will be establishing another frum enclave for more heimishe families to join. Good for you! That being said, there are some valid concerns that our politicians would be well off addressing. Constructive suggestions are very important. But in general, Monsey's quick development isn't something anyone can stop. Do yourself and those around you a favor and adopt a positive attitude. Sincerely, A Monsey old-timer who loves space and privacy, but refuses to harbor resentment

SKYROCKETING PRICES - IT’S OUR CALL I read the letters discussing

Your Voice Continued from page 40 “the changing face of Monsey” with interest. I’ve been following the real estate market for some time and the situation is actually very alarming. For those who aren’t involved, here are the average numbers: 2-3 years ago a 5-bedroom condo with a rental apartment sold for $650,000. Last year they were going for $750K. This year they jumped to impossible high of $850K or more. What is going on here? Did the cost of building jump with $200,000 in two years? Definitely not! But if the seller raises the price and he gets it, next time he’ll ask for more. Why not? So the prices are rising for no reason! It’s not like there’s not enough space to spread out; but the buyers look around, ask prices and all end up with the same conclusion- that these are the prices today. So they think, let’s buy before it goes up even more. What happens next? All these buyers are now paying a hefty mortgage every month and are forced to raise their tenant’s rent, to be able to cover their

huge mortgage payment. So, are we ready to follow the footsteps of Brooklyn? Only over there, it happened over a span of a few decades. In Monsey, prices are skyrocketing so fast, that it’s dizzying! Before you know it, you’ll also be paying $1500 for a 2-room apartment in some hole underground, or living in an apartment with the bedrooms built the size of a laundry room! (Because the developer knew that people will buy it anyway). But what can be done? Do we have a choice? Yes we do! We do not have to pay these prices! If nobody will buy for these unreasonable prices, construction projects will stay empty, and prices will fall. The developers can’t have their apartments vacant, and losing money each month, when they can lower the prices and still make a profit. Let’s not leave the power in the hands of a few, but together as a majority, save the future of Monsey. A concerned resident

Health & Wellness: Becoming

WeighSmarter By Esty Weiss

The Mind and Body Connection You think, feel, and act. When you overeat, the action part may ring especially true. But what about the thoughts and feelings, or emotions, that came first? Before you scarf down that third piece of cake, think for a moment. After all, you got a hold of the cake before you took action to eat it. Is that not true? Many of you may completely tune out when you hear or read about mind-related stuff. You may say, “If it’s a table, chair, or car, and if I can touch it, then I know it exists and that it’s “real.” Anything abstract that you cannot physically touch —may seem a little tricky to deal with. Often times, a person will ask me just to give them a fat-burning food plan. Since food is tangible, the person might consider it “real” and think that the food plan is the most important puzzle piece when it comes to weight loss. Eventually, the person may start to realize the truth: that her mind is wound up in a certain way, and that her behavior is based on her thoughts. The truth is that she will be stuck until she grasps that HER THOUGHTS ARE AS “REAL” AS THE FOOD SHE EATS! And when the thoughts are “taken care of,” everything else falls into place.

DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES:

You can touch your physical body, but you can’t touch your mind. So, does that mean that your body is real, but your thoughts, feelings, and emotions are not? Did you ever think of a trauma you experienced, only to get goose bumps on your body? Or, maybe you have a fear of flying, and just thinking about your upcoming trip makes your heart pound. How can you explain that pounding headache that began just by thinking about all those things you have yet to check off your

to-do list? You can’t touch your thoughts, but they can certainly touch you! Can you see how your thoughts and feeling can turn into real, physical symptoms? In fact, you’ve probably heard or said it yourself: “I have a gut feeling about something …” or “I feel pain in my heart about a specific situation …” Is this real? Can you touch that feeling? No, you can’t touch your feelings, nor can you touch your thoughts or emotions, but they are real as can be! And often, you’ll have physical reactions to your thoughts and feelings.

EMOTIONAL ENERGY: Many people are confused about the subject of energy. Since its intangible, the idea of energy can be pretty hard to grasp. Although it’s difficult to explain in words, or to write it on paper, you experience energy all the time! Energy is real — it flows through the body on a level that you cannot measure in any concrete way. Energy has waves and vibrancies, which you experience constantly. Take the following scenario, for example

— have you ever walked into a room with other people and felt tension in the air? The atmosphere may feel pressured, and all you want to do is get out of there as soon as possible. You may even experience this in complete silence. And the opposite is true as well. You may go places that exude a sense of calmness and relaxation. Is this all fake because you cannot touch it? Moreover, what about when people express kindness, compassion, or sympathy, and you feel your heart melt? Is that “feeling” real? Can you touch the experience of a beautiful sunset, or touch the experience you can have when you watch a newborn? What do you mean when you say that you felt the “energy” in shul on Kol Nidrei night? All your feelings, emotions, and thoughts are energy vibrations running through your body! You don’t need to understand how this works, because you know that you’re experiencing it. For practical purposes, you can think of energy as air. What happens when you have a negative thought? Well, the air travels through your heart and may continue to circulate though your body. If you didn’t work through that thought, then it won’t be released, and so it will get stuck somewhere inside of you. This is why you may hear people complaining about different aches and

pains, which the doctor will tell you actually comes from stress. The stress is that “negative trapped energy” that becomes attached to certain parts of your body and makes them really ache! Can you see now how your mind and body are totally connected? It’s simple stuff; this is something you know and feel, yet many of you simply may not be connecting to it.

WHAT DOES THE MIND/BODY CONNECTION HAVE TO DO WITH WEIGHT LOSS?

Since every thought either flows out of you or stays trapped in your body, imagine all the negative stuff trapped within you! Negative thoughts create negative feelings, which ultimately turn into negative habits, actions, and behaviors. You may think you want a third slice of cake, even if you’re not hungry. You may say things like, “I crave it, and I need it now,” or perhaps you’re aware that you’re stressed out, and so you feel like you can’t resist. However, if you have trapped and repressed thoughts like, I always gain back the weight I lost, or I can never keep to a food plan for too long, it’s because you never replaced it with a positive thought. All those negative thoughts will continue to take over your life. Try to replace this energy with

positivity by thinking, I choose to make a better choice now, or Just because I did this in the past doesn’t mean I have to do so in the future. Change your “always.” You create your reality! If you don’t have a toolbox with strategies and techniques to help yourself, you will continue to act on impulse — and you will constantly be overeating, blaming it on all kinds of circumstances. Let’s get “real”! There will always be something outside of your control that it will be easy to blame overeating on. For example: I made chasunah, I traveled, I had so many guest over, I had extra kids over at my house, I am financially stressed out, my marriage is off… We should only be busy with simchas, but be aware that as long as you have a heartbeat, there will always be “something” going on… You have a thought, a feeling and then proceed by taking action. That’s all there is to it! And depending on what your thought was, your actions will have either positive or negative consequences. This brings us to the next article, where we’ll be discussing potent and powerful techniques that all begin with your thoughts. Now you know how different thoughts will lead you to different actions!

Practical Halachos for Chanukah By Rebbetzin Yocheved Weissmandel

T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

55

The Yom Tov of Chanukah has two Mitzvos: 1. To light Chanuka candles. 2. To say Hallel and Hodaah. Lighting the Menorah: Every male or female [over the age of bar/bas Mitzvah] is mechuyav in regards to Chanukah lecht. It is widely accepted that all males over bar mitzvah light the candles themselves. Women and girls are yotze through the lighting of the baal habayis. It is imperative that they should actually see the candles burning. It is preferable for women not to light themselves, but to have their obligation fulfilled by the baal habayis. In a situation where there are no males to light, then women should light themselves.

It is preferable to use olive oil with cotton wicks. However, all other oils and wicks are permitted.

On the first night of Chanuka the bracha of Shehechiyanu is recited, in addition to the other two brochos.

There are different opinions regarding where to light the menorah. Some say to light by the door or window facing the outside, whereas others light inside, by the door across from the mezuzah in the room that has the most action, for example the dining room or kitchen.

All of the brochos should be said before starting to light the candles.

The menorah should be no lower than three tefachim from the floor (Approx. 10.5 inches or 27 cm.) and should be no higher than 20 Amos from ground level (35.5 ft or 10.8 m). There are different opinions as to when to light the menorah. Some light at shkiya, and some light after tzais hakochavim. Some who light indoors are not makpid and light later. However one should light as long as there are at least two people awake in the house (in order to publicize the miracle).

It is assur to speak between the brachos and the completion of the lighting of the candles. One may not lift or move a menorah after it has been lit while the lights are still burning. If one wants to move the menorah on Shabbos, for example, if one lit the menorah by the open doorway and one wants to move it in order to close the door, one should put a valuable object like a ring or watch on the menorah tray before moving it [preferably one should only do so after the lights are extinguished.] On Erev Shabbos we first light the Chanukah lecht and then the Shabbos lecht.

If a woman first lights the Shabbos candles, she may not light the menorah afterwards (just as she cannot do any melacha). On Motzei Shabbos the minhag is to first make Havdala and then light the menorah. The candles should only be lit in one’s own domain, if they will be sleeping at home. If one is a guest in someone else’s house (e.g. one has a Chanuka party and sleeps overnight) then one must light the menorah in the room where he sleeps. If one still intends to return home that night then one must light in one’s own house, making sure that he lights before the alos hashachar, and that at least someone else is present. If one has to travel before the time of lighting one could light as early as plag hamincha. If that won’t be possible, one should try to at least see some candles that were lit by others and just recite the second bracha of She’asoh nissim.

It is not permitted to light candles in a place that is not a residence: for example, an airport, office, or a simcha hall. If one is traveling and has no other way to be yotze, one may fulfill their obligation with their spouse’s lighting, even if they were not present as long as it would be the correct zman for the person who is traveling. It is a minhag for women not to work for the first half hour after lighting. The types of activities to refrain from are things like sewing, laundry, and cleaning. However cooking or preparing for a supper or party is permitted. If one goes away for Shabbos Chanuka, one lights in the room where he sleeps. One who plans to return home on motzei Shabbos must light when one returns home, even if it’s late. However there must be another person present during lighting. [There are some who are maikel that if one already lit the candles before Shabbos in the host’s home, then one may light on

motzei Shabbos in the place they were staying for Shabbos.] It is a minhag to put in enough oil or a long enough candle to burn for at least a half hour after the appearance of three medium-sized stars. Many have the minhag not to throw away the burnt out wicks, burning them instead with the chametz on erev Pesach. Every morning of Chanukah we recite the full Hallel at Shacharis. Al Hanisim is recited during benching and Shemoneh Esrei.

By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum

This week’s parsha begins with the statement “Vayeishev Yaakov…” “And Yaakov settled…” Rashi famously quotes a midrash that the troubles of Yosef came upon Yaakov because he sought to dwell in tranquility. After decades of fighting to remain a tzaddik in the face of Lavan’s wickedness, after facing an army of four hundred men led by his own brother, after burying his wife Rachel, and after what happened with his daughter Dina, it seems perfectly understandable that Yaakov would want to experience a period of peace. After World War II, it would have been understandable for the individuals who survived the war to seek lives of tranquility. And yet, the Satmar Rebbe, zt”l , the Bobover Rebbe, z”l, the Belzer Rebbe zt”l, the Klausenberger Rebbe, zt”l, Reb Aharon Kotler, zt”l, and many others did not seek a moment’s rest, but began the immediate and daunting task of rebuilding our nation from the ashes. Within the DP camps, students of Sarah Schenirer gathered girls and formed Bais Yaakov schools. Many strong and worthy people in seemingly

impossible circumstances worked to rebuild Klal Yisrael, and they succeeded. Two weeks ago, standing at the chasunah of the daughter of R’ Chaim Shea Halberstam, the Satmar Rav of Monsey, shlita, and looking out at the thousands of attendees, who could help but feel emotional? Seventy years ago, who could have imagined not just the quantity of the crowd, but the

During times of ease, the battle is to not become complacent, but to keep working and growing. quality? Men proudly wearing bekishes and shtreimlech, women dressed tznius’dik with their hair covered. Look at where we are today! And yet, today we take these things for granted. We must be careful not to relax, not to try to simply dwell in tranquility. In actuality, even when we achieve a momentary victory, the war never really ends. That is because the true war we are fighting, in every generation, is the war against

the yetzer hara. After battling with Lavan and with Esav, the circumstances of Yaakov’s life became easier. But circumstances are merely the backdrop to the war; they are not the war itself. During times of struggle and hardship, the battle is to trust in Hashem as you push your way through. During times of ease, the battle is to not become complacent, but to keep working and growing. Now that we have rebuilt Klal Yisrael to such a beautiful extent, what is our battle today? Looking out at the sea of faces at the chasunah, another feeling could arise: that of being just a face in the crowd. After the war, every person knew they were needed because they could see their role in the rebuilding. Every person who opened a store on Lee Avenue, who donated money to a yeshiva, or who simply enrolled his child in a Torah-true mosed, knew he was part of the rebuilding process. In today’s world, our community has grown so large that each individual could start to feel superfluous. Worse, one could even feel unwanted,

Now Through such as when facing rejections from schools or yeshivos. The larger the crowd, the smaller the individual feels. But what is the bracha we recite when we see the ultimate big crowd - when 600,000 or more Yidden gather in one place? Baruch Ata Hashem‌ Chacham HaRazim.. Blessed are You Hashem‌ knower of secrets. Even in a crowd 600,000 people, each person has his own private thoughts, his own secrets. Each person is a world. Just as we had to fight to rebuild Klal Yisrael, so, too, do we need to fight to continue building, even when we don’t see or feel our own significance. Even in the face of rejection. We must not give in to despair; we must not feel small or unimportant. We must be careful not to see the community as so big and secure as to overshadow our individual weaknesses. If we think that we are small and insignificant, then we might relax our personal standards, trusting that the larger community will not be damaged. Don’t give in to these thoughts. Keep fighting. So, as you push your way through the crowds, as you sit in traffic, as you fight to get your children into schools, never feel for even a moment that you are not important, or that you are not accomplishing big things. You have been chosen to carry Hashem’s flag in this world as part of Hashem’s chosen people. Everything you do matters. You matter. May we soon win the ultimate battle, and merit the coming of Moshiach Tzidkaynu, bimheira biyameinu.

Gifting By: Ruchy Reese

Made Easy

Gift shopping for a husband is a nearly impossible task. In my case, the Well of Great Ideas had officially run dry long ago; after all, how many watches and wallets does one man need? That’s why I am positively giddy with excitement having finally found the perfect solution to my gift-giving dilemma. The newest product to hit the Judaica market, ShtendTik is ready to take the world by storm. I met up with the CEO of Hillel Co, the mastermind behind this unique product, to learn more about this fabulous idea. He told me that ShtendTik was developed to make the life of every Jewish man a little more comfortable. Throughout the years he’d witnessed men schlepping their various davening apparel in bulky, uncomfortable manners, and realized that there must be a better way. Enter ShtendTik. Developed with the suave look of a professional’s briefcase, ShtendTik is custom made for the Jewish man. Weighing only 7.5 lbs, the size of an average newborn, this clever invention is designed to effectively transport a tallis, two pairs of Tefillin, and still has room for additional seforim. If that’s not enough, the built-in Lucite shtender takes the cake. I watched with fascination as I was shown the multi-positional shtender that

66

accommodates even the tallest of men in comfort, whether in the sitting or standing pose. Ingeniously designed to form a box shtender when erect, there is still room left in the bottom compartment for storage. Most shocking was the size. Given the many functions and incredible storage capacity of ShtendTik, I had been expecting to see a rather bulky contraption. What I actually saw however, was anything but. At only 13 by 11 inches, ShtendTik is the ideal solution for the frequent traveler, fitting comfortably onto airline trays. Even for the non-traveler, I envision ShtendTik changing the way men and bochurim carry their davening gear. With built-in storage, a private learning oasis, insulated and padded walls to provide protection for Tefillin, and its stunning faux leather design- there has yet to be a found a product as versatile as ShtendTik. I just can’t imagine a better gift for a Jewish man! Don’t tell my husband, but as soon as I saw ShtendTik, I knew that for this Chanukah season at least, my shopping woes are over!

With hundreds of new board games that appear each and every year, it’s refreshing to pull out a reliable classic family board game and still have a fantastic, fun-filled time together. It’s so easy to get caught up in the hype and allure of new games – especially those of the self-absorbing, frenzied, electronic variety – but there is something deeply satisfying and comforting about a game that is so familiar and familial.

There’s nothing quite like family and friends gathering around a table having goodnatured fun together, but with Monseyopoly there’s a whole lot more to consider.

Here’s a game whose earliest version appeared back in 1902. Following that, the game went through numerous transformations, gaining immense popularity as it powered its way through the 20th century. Recently, this classic game has spawned any number of unique variations and that brings us to the newest version of all: MONSEYOPOLY.

This innovative project is the result of the outreach efforts of one of Rockland County’s premier, longstanding kiruv organizations: JEP Rockland. JEP Rockland was founded back in 1979 by Rabbi Yehuda Schwab, zt”l, and for nearly 35 years he oversaw every aspect of JEP’s growth and development, personally and positively influencing the

lives of thousands along the way. JEP is thriving with a full gamut of ongoing classes and programs to fulfill its mission to reach, teach, and inspire unaffiliated Jewish children and adults by introducing them to the value of Torah and mitzvos. In keeping with its pursuit of uniting Jews of all backgrounds, JEP Rockland presents a game that sparks renewed interest and pride in our local community. MONSEYOPOLY is now available, ready to provide friends and family with hours of kosher entertainment. Stone TWENTY SIX CHAYA’S STORY: “We gave him a sedative,” the nurse informed me as soon as I walked, still panting, past her desk. “He woke up. He was in a lot of pain. Your husband was here.” “Thank you,” I said, and looked into her eyes. She was the woman I entrusted him to every single night. Then I rushed to his room, with the nurse following close behind. I understood something serious had happened by the way she was suddenly interested. I needed to see for myself, while needing to get to the forefront of a story only she, not I, had witnessed. Chuna’s room was motionless, as always. In a hospital room where life and death war with each other, nothing observable, not a single physical thing moves. I swam through the clean air, closer to his bed. He lay in the center of his bed, a stage for healings, miracles, despair, change. His hands were open. Above his eyes, on the innermost edges

of his eyebrows, a spade of pain etched its way deep into his skin. The nurse moved his leg under his blanket before readjusting the sheets. “What happened?” I asked, softly. “It’s always like this. They awaken to pain. It’s the first thing they feel. It’s hard to tol-

Finally, I settled into a seat. Chuna woke up. My child was in terrible pain. He was on the way to getting better, and things were only becoming harder for him. He would wake, and his spirit would be encased in limitations. I felt despair. I was afraid to touch him.

And here I was, chained to the hospital bed by magnets of love and guilt, and I couldn’t prepare a wedding from a bedside, could I? erate.” I nodded. It is always like that. Pain is the first indicator that a part of us can feel. Having told me about the morning, she felt ready to leave. But I remained at the bedside, shaking my head, remembering how I was herding out the others when my son awoke to pain. Again, I asked myself how much a mother can do when the strings of attachment are only connected from a distance.

Perhaps it would hurt. Now that his skin had sensors on fire, I couldn’t even draw near him. I looked at him from afar. Breathed in deeply. Sent him loving looks. I felt a restlessness in my gut. And anxiety tugged at me. Here was my son, slowly emerging from forgetfulness. Here was I, finally remembering my daughter’s needs. Her wedding was in a matter of days. And here I was, chained to the hospital bed by magnets of love and guilt, and I couldn’t prepare a wedding from a bedside, could I? I could plan though. Again, I ran through the list of images that flitted through my brain when I thought of a wedding: Dresses. Chuppah dress. Apartment. Furniture. Meal. My anxiety grew more pronounced. I stood up, the chair scraping against the speckled floor. A low, grunting moan escaped Chuna’s lips. I stood still, waiting for it to pass.

Chuna grew quiet again. It seemed his sleep was transparent, like the ocean’s surface, a thin veneer under which sharks of pain swam. My stomach grew heavier with dread. I’m afraid of life, I said to myself. And I knew this revelation was said in a moment of clarity. As long as Chuna slept, I could sit at his bedside and ruminate and come to a better understanding. As long as Malka remained far away from the lifealtering event of getting married, I could pretend it didn’t happen. It was action that scared me. I needed to take action. Now. Today. I would ask Zelda. She had married off five already. She would help. I looked at Chuna again. He was sleeping, as he would continue to do until the sedation wore off. “Bashefer, watch over him, and spare him the pain,” I prayed. I left the building. Walked briskly to the street, I hurried home, and before even greeting Malka’la, stalked right up Zelda’s stairs. She wasn’t on her porch or even in the kitchen leading right off of it. I opened her door and stepped into the small, tidy space pungent with bleach. “Zelda?”

“Chaya?” I heard a chair screech before she came out, barring the doorway to her big room. “What is it, Chaya? How’s Chuna?” “Chuna…” How do you condense a feeling of terror, worry, hope, and celebration into a simple reply? “Baruch Hashem.” I shook my head, attempting to indicate everything left unsaid. She looked busy, guarded. “How can I help?” she asked, with generosity born of distance. “Malka’la’s wedding. It’s very soon. I hardly even real-

Zelda smiled. Her smile was so wide, expanding through her face. “I thought you’d never ask,” she said in a low and kind voice. “Of course you need help. Why are wedding guests abundantly rewarded? So that no one will get married on her own. It takes a whole community for a union to form. I’m here for you.” She stepped inside her inner room, and she continued talking, so I followed her. Hanging from a pole under

A thousand voices spoke up in my head. One voice spoke loudest, and I let it pass my lips. It was the voice of humility. “Thank you,” I said. ized.” Feeling foolish, I forged ahead, offering more. “You were the one who encouraged me all this time.” She still didn’t jump in. “So, I thought, you know, I need help. I don’t know how to do this. I pushed it off for so long. I was afraid. It’s not fair to my daughter. I need to work on the wedding. I need to do it now.” Still listening, I wanted her to offer me her full mouth, her opinion, as she usually did. “Even with Chuna and everything going on, Malka’la still deserves to be the once-in-alifetime bride. And I can’t do it on my own. I need your help.” There. I said it. Shame seared through me, crackling through my insides until I was sure it could be seen and heard by everyone, Zelda most of all.

her arched ceiling hung three pink dresses and a fat skirt of white tulle. I looked at the beautifully crafted dresses and gasped, realization flooding me. “These are yours,” Zelda said. I felt paralyzed, mostly in the throat. “I thought we’d have to continue sending you help behind your back so as not to hurt your illusion that a woman can operate without her community. I thought you’d never ask.” A thousand voices spoke up in my head. One voice spoke loudest, and I let it pass my lips. It was the voice of humility. “Thank you,” I said. “That’s what neighbors are for. We’ve also taken care of

the meal. Malka’la’s linens are sewn. There’s a small sum of money available in the kollel for you; it is to buy Malka’la furnishings and other necessities.” Was there anything left for me to do? I wondered. “You’ve never married off a child, so it’s hard to explain. We do this for each other so that the mother can do what her real job is, being there for the kallah.” I stood, and she must have seen my confusion clearly on my face. “Don’t forget how scared you were when you first got married. And how as much as you prayed, you trusted, you did your best- your new life was completely unfamiliar.” To be continued… Chany Rosengarten’s work has appeared in Mishpacha, Ami, Jewish Press, Chabad. org, Lakewood Shopper and of course, The Monsey View. She writes for businesses and entertainment venues, gives workshops on writing and success, and her book Jerusalem Stone will soon be released. The Election Process By Ruchel Lebovits

As we’ve discussed last week, constitutionally the only requirements for being president is being 35 years of age, a natural born citizen, and 14 years of living in the US. But realistically it takes a lot more for one to not only become president but even to run for office. Some of the requirements that are called for are money, name recognition, trustworthiness, the ability to connect to people and a big dose of charisma. Most people who run for president have prior political experience, sometimes starting out locally and climbing their way up to the highest office. If a candidate is coming from a civilian position it is usually from the executive variety. To begin the process of running for president, a potential candidate sets up what is called an exploratory committee. Their function is to find out if there is enough interest among citizens to make it worthwhile to spend all

the time and money it takes to run for president. They will leak information about the candidate, hinting at a potential run, and will then poll people’s reaction and see what kind of reception their candidate is getting. They might also try and find out what position would be best for their candidate to take as well as any negative perceptions people have of their candidate. This can help them shape what is called the candidate’s platform, the agenda that he will be running on and positions he will take on important national issues.

any money donated to them has to be reported. This ensures that if a large corporation or personal donor donates money to a candidate, the voters are aware of who they are so they cannot have an undue measure of influence on that candidate. When they are still in the exploration stage, the source of that money does not have to be disclosed. This allows the potential candidates to raise large sums of money at a time and helps them launch the candidacy from a more financially stable position. When the committee has

completed their research and feels that their candidate has a considerable chance of winning an election, the candidate will then officially launch their presidential campaign.

ANALYSIS One of the most important requisites for a candidate is name recognition. Candidates will travel around the country, trying to ensure they meet as many people as possible so that people will know who they are. When a person walks into a polling place and sees a name they recognize, they will be more likely to vote for that person. That is why the election cycle starts years before the election. Candidates want to make sure that as many people as possible know their name. Candidates like Bernie Sanders, Ben Carson, and Carly Fiorina have to spend the ad money and endure countrywide campaigns introducing themselves to the electorate and trying to influence to voters that they are qualified to run this country. While a new name needs reassurance of competency, it can also create a level of excitement which a “Washington Insider” will be hard-pressed to find. Think President Obama in 2008. The country was entrenched in a war and heading for a financial disaster, and he promised little more than a breath of fresh air - and remarkably it worked. There are, of course, many candidates who are known nationally and sometimes internationally well before they start campaigning. Take for example Secretary Clinton, Governor Bush, and Donald Trump. It would be hard to find a person in America today who doesn’t recognize these names

90

even if they don’t know exactly who the candidates are or what they stand for. These candidates have a different hurdle to overcome. With name recognition, they might also find a certain level of perception which in many cases is negative. Secretary Clinton has to reassure voters who doubt her competency after her Benghazi scandal. Jeb Bush has to dissociate himself from his brother‘s presidency which still raises ire with many voters. Donald Trump has to convince people he isn’t a loudmouthed buffoon but a smart executive who has managed to run a massive corporation and reinvent it to make a profit in different economic climates. So far this election cycle, name recognition has been a mixed bag. Secretary Clinton seems to be headed for a sure win. Donald Trump has been doing astonishingly well in polls, using his skills from the

private sector by taking positions he believes people will want to support and using loud rhetoric to portray confidence. In the last week, though, this brashness has cost him a slide in the polls after he took a hardline position against Muslim immigrants and mocked a disabled reporter who disagreed with his accounts of 9/11 reporting. On the other hand, Jeb Bush’s campaign seems to have floundered despite a solid résumé as a successful governor. It seems people do not want to have a Bush threepeat. And, of course, some newcomers to the national scene such as Carson, Fiorina, Rubio and Cruz have managed to amass national support and maybe more importantly, support in early voting states - which many times will shift elections towards candidates who do well there.

CREATIVE USES

Attention Bubbies and Zaidies: it’s time to head over to the bank and cash in those big bills for smaller denominations. Chanukah is right around the corner and with it, the minhag of distributing Chanukah gelt! Children, grandchildren, and of course teachers, rebbeim, and bus drivers are especially fond of this minhag. So while you’re standing in line for your chance to cash in on this minhag- entertain yourself with this interesting peek into the world of coins.

Can’t find a screwdriver, but need to tighten a loose screw? A dime is just the right width to fit inside a standard screw. Just slide it in and give a twist.

Need to make a quick measurement but don’t have a ruler handy? Grab a quarter to measure in inchesits diameter is just less than one full inch. For a decorative door stop, fill a fancy drawstring bag with heavy coins and tie shut. Just be aware that it may not be safe for households with small children.

92

/ T HE MO NS E Y V IE W

The first coins to be used as currency were minted about two thousand years ago when people started stamping denominations onto small pieces of metal. Before that time, each locale had its own idea of currency, running the gamut from beads and shells - to eggs. It might be worth your time to inspect your pocket change. The world’s most expensive nickel sold for $3.7 million dollars! Minted without approval of the US government, only five 1913 Liberty Head nickels made it into the public domain. If you happen to find one in mint condition (pun intended!), it is estimated to be worth over $20 million dollars! Ever wondered who that bird on the American silver dollar was? His name was Peter, and he was adopted by the workers at the United States Mint who used him as

COINS IN HALACHA Some families have the minhag to pass around a pushka right after Havdala, allowing each member of the family to start the week off with the mitzvah of tzedakah. There is a minhag that a parent will weigh his son’s hair after the child’s first haircut, and donate the equivalent weight in coins to tzedaka. The Gemara states that the Chanukah lights have precedence over Kiddush wine when a person only

a model for their drawings. You can now visit him on display at the Mint.

FAST

FACTS

Looking into a career as an engraver? It’ll only take about 15 years of training. Not only do you have to work with incredible precision when creating the metal plates used for making coins, you also have to be able to work backwards! Each plate is the mirror image of the picture that will appear on the finished coins. Get more for your money’s worth, literally! Somes coin cost more than their value to produce. The current cost to create a penny weighs in at 1.7 cents and a nickel at eleven cents. Then again, if you own more dimes and quarters, you might cut even. It costs 3.9 cents to produce a dime, and only nine cents to make a quarter.

has enough money to buy one of the two items, because they serve to publicize the Chanukah miracle. Given the importance of having Chanukah candles, the common custom of giving Chanukah gelt enables the poor of the community to buy lecht without shame, because everyone else is receiving gelt from their fellows as well!

Numismatist: Meaning "someone who studies and collects things that are used as money, including coins, tokens, paper bills, and metals." See if you can say that ten times fast! Mint: A facility in which coins that will be used for currency are made. GLASSWORKS STUDIO

4 and up

151 South Street, Morristown, NJ 07960

40 minutes from Monsey

Although not cheap, this is a creative, enjoyable, and atypical activity for children of all ages – especially teens. There is no painting involved in this glass fusing studio. First you will select a project that you would like to make from the sample wall, which include various shaped dishes, serving platters, picture frames, coasters, wall hangings, jewelry boxes, just to name a few. You will then create your project design with the assorted shapes of glass; there are over 100 colors to choose from! Glassworks will fuse the project at high temperature to melt the pieces together, and in a second firing, the glass will be shaped over or into a mold. There are ready kits for younger children to follow. Projects are ready for pick-up in one week, and shipping is available for an additional charge. Special for Rockland residents: Glassworks will send your art home with a different Rockland resident to spare you the trip back or shipping costs.

HOW IT WORKS: 973-656-0800

$20 and up, per project

Sunday 11am-6pm, Monday 10am3pm, Tuesday 125pm, Wednesday Evening (adults only) 5-10pm, Thurs-Friday 127pm. Reservations strongly recommended during busy seasons.

96

/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W

Once you have selected a shape you would like to make, the staff will provide you with a clear, blank, flat sheet of glass.

Your whole design will be built on top of that base sheet out of pieces of colored glass and glued in place.

The staff will give instructions on how to make a project; the design is completely up to you. Projects usually take two hours to complete, but can take more or less time depending on how detailed a design you choose to make. After your visit, our staff will melt your project together and shape it if you have chosen a dish or vase project.

GLASS PIECES

STRINGER

FRITBALLS

Glassworks has about 100 glass colors for you to work with and comes in both translucent and opaque colors. Glass pieces are unlimited for use on your project.

Stringer is thin spaghetti-like pieces of glass. They can be used to make flower stems, letters, cats’ whiskers, or any number of skinny details. Stringers are also unlimited for use on your project.

Fritballs are pre-fired marble-like pieces of glass. They are excellent as flower centers, eyes, bubbles, or just as polka-dot accents. 15 are included in your project price. Any extras are 15 cents each.

KITS

EXTRAS

For our younger customers, pre-cuts kits are available. They generally range from $20-$30. All the pieces to make a specific picture come included, but they also have use of the stringer and 15 fritballs to add on their own details. Kits choices change seasonally and can be everything form a unicorn to a gumball machine.

While entirely optional, embellishments available for purchase can be an excellent way to finish off a project. Most are 50 cents to a $1 each and include charms, letter charms to add a name or message to a project, specialty glass colors, and dichroic glass.

THE BIG PLAYHOUSE There’s nothing more exciting for children than taking on the roles of the grownups in their life. Whether it’s a doctor, tatty, or fireman, youngsters try to imitate the people they admire. That is why The Big Playhouse is such a wonderful destination for imaginative children, where they can spend a few hours as grownups in the most magical environment! This fun-filled paradise hosts attractions that simulate real life, giving children an opportunity to be Mommy, Tatty, a chef, a doctor – anywhere where their imagination may take them! The Big Playhouse is a custom-built open play area, which was created to replicate a traditional downtown mini city. Each play structure is outfitted with costumes, furniture and toys to enhance your child's imaginative play experience through good old-fashioned dramatic play. Your child will be able to suit-up in uniform at the construction site, be a hairstylist at the salon, conduct checkups on their dollies at the doctor’s office, and “adopt” babies at the nursery! Other activities include stocking supermarket shelves, visiting the barnyard, and the most exciting part might yet be to putter around at home in The Village – a cottage residence with many great activities. In addition to the play village, they offer various toys for the children to enjoy while parents/caregivers play along.

OUR CHANUKAH MIRACLE Bracha Toporowitch “Ima, fire!” “Mommy, help!” The screams pierced the night, and I sprinted to the living room in a panic. I gasped in shock as my vision filled with flames leaping from the back of the couch. It had been a relaxing evening, with the children playing nicely in the living room. Our house in the suburbs had been toasty warm, despite the falling snow outside. We had moved the couch away from its spot under the big bay window and had set up a small table behind it so that the flames could be seen shining into the street. Unfortunately, my husband was abroad, but I had lit the menorah in his place, and had felt a strong sense of peace. The Chanukah lights had twinkled in Zaidy’s beautiful silver menorah, and the children’s eyes had mirrored the glow as I had sang Chanukah songs with them. I almost had wished the moment would never pass. Then the phone had rang, and I had hurried to the kitchen to get it. It had been my friend Esther calling from the city. I had been looking forward to catching up with my dear friend, but then suddenly I heard screams. “Ima, Ima, come quick!” I threw down the receiver and ran into the living room. In a flash, I realized that the couch was situated on top of a carpet, and near dangling curtains; the wooden Monsey house could go up in flames within a matter of minutes! I recognized the danger of remaining inside, and despite my fear of losing the house, I made my decision. “Everyone out! Everyone get outside!” I yelled at the top of my lungs. They all stood there. “Get out, I said!” They were all rooted in place as though glued to the carpet, their eyes round as gold-foil encased chocolate gelt; their faces expressing disbelief. Yelling at my children to leave the house, I simultaneously, in one swift movement, tumbled

the couch onto its back to smother the flames. I thought I had accomplished the feat, but as I looked closer I realized that this was not so. To our bad luck the back of the couch was concave; a pocket of air was still feeding the fire. I grabbed a towel to beat at the flames, hoping to put them out. “Shoshi, bring me a pail of water!” My oldest was only eleven years old, but mature and capable. She ran to fill a pail, while I continued yelling at the kids to get out of the house, beating relentlessly at the shooting tongues of

In a desperate attempt to save my family, I continued to beat at the flames, even when the hem of my robe caught fire. I managed to put out the fire eating away at my robe by using the towel. Adrenaline coursed through my body, and I didn’t feel the burns on my legs. I continued smacking at the flames until the pail of water was finally brought. In Hashem’s great mercy, that one pail of water was enough to put out the flames. The smoke was acrid and filled our nostrils with its nasty fumes. The gaping black hole in the back of the couch was frightening to look at, as well as the hole in the center of the carpet. The parquet floor below was untouched. It seemed like hours that I had been battling the fire, but in reality the whole episode had taken maybe six or seven minutes. I burst into tears as I hugged the children one by one, and then all of them together. We stood silently crying, taking in the scene. We knew that we had witnessed a miracle in that the curtains hanging near the couch had not burst into flames. We had been saved by the grace of Hashem. As I looked around the room and then from child to child, it dawned on me that two people were missing. Where was my Moishe? And where was the nanny I had taken to stay

The screams pierced the night, and I sprinted to the living room in a panic. fire escaping from under the couch. At any given moment the carpet could have erupted into a fiery conflagration. We had only moments to put out the fire, or suffer the dire consequences. “Shoshi! Where are you with the pail of water?!” I screamed desperately. “Come already!” “Ima, there’s no water pressure!” Shoshi cried in frustration. “The water is dribbling out of the faucet!” Low water pressure was a problem we had encountered on and off in the past, and despite our complaints- the municipality had done nothing to correct it. Now of all times, in our most desperate moment - low water pressure jeopardized our chances of survival.

with m e while my husband was away? At two and a half years old, Moishe hadn’t yet developed a healthy fear of fire. The children told me that Moishe had taken a lit candle to pretend that he was lighting a menorah. By accident, he had dropped it onto the back of the couch and set it on fire. Understandably, he was terrified and had run out of the room to hide. And the nanny? Tired from the long day, she had retired to the basement for a deeply needed nap. She slept through the entire episode, and would have continued to sleep as the fire blazed. It was a miracle! Had my children not been frozen in shock as I yelled for them to leave the house, I might have lost Moishy, who had gone into hiding. I was overcome with weakness when I realized that two lives had been saved that night. Suddenly, I felt my legs stinging. Due to the adrenaline, I hadn’t felt any discomfort before that moment. But now I was aching all over. Despite the trauma I was feeling euphoric. We had just been zoche to experience our very own Chanukah miracle!

WHEN A KID COOKS Batsheva Honig The beeping of the alarm penetrated the cobwebs in my head, and I thrust my hand in the general direction of the alarm clock to silence it, while trying to hold on to the wisps of a fading dream. It was after a late and interrupted night, and I was fighting a losing battle against exhaustion. And then, a cold metal object was pressed against my cheek. Shocked by the sudden icy feeling, I rolled over to investigate, only to be assaulted by a smell so horrific that I was wide awake in an instant. There on my pillow, in my bed, next to my face- was a cholent pot. With careless abandon, my two-year old was opening and closing the potlike someone

106

/ T HE MO NS E Y V IE W

whose olfactory senses were not quite fully developed, informing me cheerily that he was “cooking supper.” No, it was not Sunday morning and cholent was not the planned leftovers I’d be serving for supper. Neither is cholent one of my family’s favorites that I would ever serve, let alone cook, on a mundane weekday. It took two minutes of collecting my bearings to realize that it was Thursday morning, five days since this delightful Shabbos dish took center-stage at my Shabbos table – and a full week since it had been cooked. (And in this space, I will refrain from writing all these words that may do justice as a reaction, just because my mother raised me not to say them. Never. Ever.) The fridge

must’ve remained unlocked during one of the wee-hour bottle refills. (Yes, I keep my refrigerator locked. You would too, if you risked waking up to a cholent pot in your bed...) Visions of golden egg rivulets mixed with hunks of cheese and olives spread across my kitchen floor made me jump out of bed- only to promptly dive beneath the covers again – as far from the potential mess as possible. Going to the kitchen won’t change anything now, will it? I thought to myself from underneath the safety of my blanket. You’re probably wondering why this cholent pot was still in my fridge on a Thursday morning. I knew you’d ask. It all gets exposed at the end. Newton left the thought hanging in the Third Law of Motion; for every action there’s a reaction – and a consequence. In the merit of this public confession, may my housekeeping foibles be erased from my record. Amen. The thing is that Monday is the day my cleaning lady shows up. Actually, I’ll correct that. Monday is the day that my cleaning lady doesn’t show up. But I can still hope. Every Motzei Shabbos I still whisper a little prayer as I tuck the cholent pot – and the soup pot, for good measure – into the fridge for Teresa to scrub and shine. Thank goodness that my sister

You see, she doesn’t realize that most national holidays are known to us people-of-the-weird-customsand-random-off-times-thatseem-to-last-forever, so I guess she thinks that any day can be a holiday for her as well. Any day: especially Mondays. veryone looks forward to festive family gatherings during Chanukah. If you are the one hosting, you’ve probably spent plenty of time preparing the menu, gifts, and décor. A wise hostess also knows that every successful party has one key ingredient: happy, stimulated kids. With that thought in mind, I present to you this fabulous childrens’ table that will entertain and intrigue your kids for hours on end, enabling you to spend quality time over at the adult table. The great thing about this party setup is that it features veryone’s favorite building block: Lego. Most people have these great toys at home and can pull them out easily to set up an entertaining station for the children. In addition, Lego is a very clean project, leaving your kids outfits fresh and unstained. (Until they discover the donuts!) Lego is a great project, activating the imagination of children in all age ranges. If, however, you are worried about infants getting a hold of the small pieces, just substitute Duplo blocks in place of Lego. The main focus of the party is the silicon double-sided mat in the center. On one side it features a building site for Lego; just flip it over for a Duplo party. The great part about this silicon mat is that it will draw the children’s attention to the center of the table, containing the excitement to one main area. Relatives can work in tandem to create a masterpiece, or an older child can lead the group in one of the games featured in the sidebar. You can find the silicon mat featured here at Toys 4 U for $39.99.

While Lego building is entertaining enough, up the entertainment factor with these delightful games. The best part is that all of the following are simple enough to be run by teens, while you enjoy yourself over at the adult table! the game pieces, and use single black and white Lego to keep track of how many of the colors/positions are correct. (The leading team’s pattern can be hidden beneath a canopy built from Lego.)

· Prepare a container of Lego for each group.

Deliver and Build Relay Race

· Display a tower assembled with ten Lego pieces. After ten seconds, remove from table.

(All ages)

· Give each group twenty seconds to build an identical tower from memory. The group who has remembered the combination correctly receives a point, or if you’d like- a chocolate coin. The tower can be taller or more intricate, depending on age level of the players.

·

For children who cannot sit through the entire meal and games, let them let out some energy with this action-packed game. Divide children into teams.

· Arrange each team’s buckets against a wall and have the children line up about ten feet away from their bucket. · Using plastic spoons, one child at a time should shovel up some Lego and carry it to a designated building area behind where the lines form. Three group members stationed there should build a structure with the Lego pieces as they come. The team to have all their Lego incorporated into the structure first wins.

Hint for Fair Play: If you’d like to divide the gaming teams in a way that will avoid any fights, simply place a Lego piece under each child’s chair. Before the games begin, have every child look under his or her chair and have them group according to color. (It goes without saying that this will need prior planning for fair team division.)

I kept the actual table settings simple with a plain white tablecloth, white plastic plates, and colorful napkins. At Ikea I found these lovely glass cylinders to showcase the evening activity. I bought two shapes, paying roughly $15 per set of three. For a pop of color I chose to put colorful candies in the taller cylinders. You can also showcase chocolate coins. The wider, stockier set I reserved for Lego, in order to make it easier to pull pieces out as needed.

I bought bags for under a dollar at Amazing Savings, added tissue paper, wrote the name of the children on the bags, and filled the bags with ageappropriate prizes.

In case any of the kids are not interested in Lego, or grow bored of building before the party is over, I supplied an alternative activity to keep everyone entertained. Between each set of two place settings, I placed an inexpensive card game, such as Old Maid or Go Fish. Each couple of kids can play the game at their spot, and then send the game further down the line, receiving in turn one that they haven’t yet played. You should be able to find cheap games in your local prize store. If all of that just wasn’t enough excitement to keep your kids busy, pull out the goody bags custom made for them. I bought bags for under a dollar at Amazing Savings, added tissue paper, wrote the name of the children on the bags, and filled the bags with age-appropriate prizes. For little ones consider cars, stickers, or coloring books. Older children might appreciate a Rubik’s cube, an arts and crafts activity, or a cheap book. Last but not least, I placed a dreidel on top of each plate. Not only will a dreidel enhance the look of your party, it will also keep your children engaged with healthy play as they challenge each other with the age-old classic. Wishing you and yours a fantastic Chanukah!

Donut Toppings We always want to be great parents and make homemade donuts with our kids, but sometimes it can be too messy and complicated. For this Chanukah, there’s something new to do with your children: decorate pre-made donuts. It’s a lot cleaner - and a lot more enjoyable! I used Franczoz confectionary sugared donuts; however, you can use any kind of donut without a glaze. LEMON DONUT TOPPING Glaze ½ cup confectionary sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice Extras Swiss candy fruits- lemon 1. Combine the lemon Juice and confectionary sugar. Beat with a fork until smooth. 2. Spread evenly over the donut, and for decoration, place lemon Swiss candy fruits on top of the glaze. STRAWBERRY SHORT CAKE DONUT Glaze 1/2 cup confectionary sugar 1 tablespoon hot water 1 tablespoon raspberry preserves Extras Whipped Topping Sliced Strawberries 1) Combine Glaze ingredients and beat well with a fork until smooth. 2) Spread Glaze evenly over donuts. 3) Add whip cream on top of the glaze, and place sliced strawberries on top. PEANUT BUTTER GLAZED DONUT WITH GRANOLA TOPPING Glaze 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/3 cup light corn syrup 1/4 cup vegetable shortening 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 1/4 cup water 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Extras Gefen Pecan Granola Crunch Blend brown sugar, corn syrup, and shortening in 1-quart saucepan. Cook and stir over mediumlow heat until mixture just comes to a boil. Remove from heat. Blend in peanut butter until melted. Gradually blend in water until mixture is smooth. I like displaying it on a long rectangular plate, as it’s displayed in the picture. 1 package hot dogs Panko crumbs for breading Salt and pepper to taste Parsley flakes 2 eggs Ketchup Thin pretzel sticks 1. Crack two eggs into a plate and mix. Mix panko crumbs with parsley flakes, salt, and pepper. Dip each hot dog into the egg mix to cover, and then dredge in the panko crumbs. Dip once more in the egg mixture and then panko crumbs to double bread the hot dogs. 2. Bake on 350°. Keep turning hot dogs until all sides of Panko crumbs look crispy and golden brown. 3. Once hot dogs are ready, slice hot dogs into thin pieces and stick a pretzel stick into each hot dog. For taste and display, serve on top of a squirt of ketchup.

RE ALE STATE

WHERE ARE MORTGAGE RATES HEADED? THIS WINTER? NEXT YEAR? BY ANN ZEILINGOLD The interest rate you pay on your home mortgage has a direct impact on your monthly payment. The higher the rate, the greater the payment will be. That is why it is important to look at where rates are headed when deciding to buy now or wait until next year. Below is a chart created using Freddie Mac’s October 2015 U.S. Economic & Housing Marketing Outlook. As you can see interest rates are projected to increase steadily over the course of the next 12 months.

A half of a percent (.5%) increase in interest rate can increase your monthly mortgage payment significantly.

HOW WILL THIS IMPACT YOUR MORTGAGE PAYMENT?

Depending on the amount of the loan that you secure, a half of a percent (.5%) increase in interest rate can increase your monthly mortgage payment signifi-

cantly. According to CoreLogic’s latest Home Price Index, national home prices have appreciated 6.4% from this time last year and are predicted to be 4.7% higher next year. If both the predictions of home price and interest rate increases become reality, families would wind up paying considerably more for their next home. Lets use a real local example: Let us choose a home in Chestnut Ridge. Today’s purchase price is $425,000, with a 20% down payment ($85,000) and a loan amount of $340,000. If the rate is 4%, the monthly payment would be $1,794.65, without taxes and insurance. If Freddie Mac’s predictions become reality, in one year from now this home would be just shy of $20,000 higher. The new purchase piece would be $445,000. The new 20% down p a y m e n t would be $89,000
