My kids had a great time constructing all kinds of towers and shapes with the marshmallows and toothpicks. I’m saving the masking tape city idea for Chanukah. However, I would advise readers to use the blue Painter’s Tape (which I buy in Rockland Kosher), as they should come off parquet floors easily without leaving any traces. I’m looking forward to seeing what else The Monsey View has in store for my kids!

Therefore, I was appalled yet not surprised to actually see that letter in print. Everywhere, from the bus stop, to the grocery checkout line, to the shul, there are sentiments against city people being expressed. Monsey is definitely going through a metamorphosis, yet it
seems like our true values and standards are being forgotten in the process. Haven’t we learned to be welcoming and accepting? To care and to share? What about the Yiddishe traits of rachmanis and gemilas chasadim? Vahavtem es hager - a ger is any outsider! Are we descendants of Avraham Avinu who exemplified hachnosis orchim and chesed? The attitude expressed are not what we want to portray. Are we truly preserving the standards based on daas Torah or lehavdil the anti-semitic agenda of Preserve Ramapo that’s trickling into our midst? Are we trying to accomplish something worthwhile or is all this chatter a narrow minded trend stemming from egoism and superiority? Continued on page 38

Preserving nature is a nice and important ideal, but would anyone have a smaller family on that basis? Am Yisroel is one family. Does a birthplace give one ownership rights? To whom do the trees and grass and space belong? How does He want us to go about it? People bemoan the changing face of Monsey, yet fail to recognize the blessing therein. Our community is growing and blossoming. My mother raised eight children here, and each of us has an average of ten of our own by now, ka”h, and we’re marrying them off b”H. A nekomah on Hitler ym”s, as my grandmother a”h used to say. Of course we need re-zoning laws and new developments. Where else would we put our young couples? On my beautiful tree-lined street, of one-family homes and front and back lawns, there is no place. I am grateful that my children don’t have to live out of town.. Yes, people from the cities are moving here at a lightning pace, and it is a major burden on our infrastructure, traffic, and school systems, but our own exponential growth makes up the largest percentage. Rent prices are skyrocketing, and we are all equally frustrated about it. However,
why on earth is the blame being cast upon people from the city? Don’t blame these people who come out of sheer desperation, to have a roof over their heads and afford it. Are the storeowners concerned? On the contrary, economic opportunities increase with a larger population. Are you annoyed with your new neighbors who miss the conveniences they left behind? Try to imagine their position for one minute. Through Divine providence they landed her in Monsey. They miss their families and lifestyle, and are facing day-to-day challenges. Do our nonchalant comments about space and standards make their transition easier? Let’s remember, they are our fellow sisters and brothers. Kind gestures, warm invitations, helping hands, and babysitters are the least we can offer to make their acclimation process smoother. I’m sure Monsey View’s new column, “Welcome Neighbor!” is inviting and exciting for them. Let’s change our perspective and focus on the good Hashem has bestowed upon us. What’s That Noise in Your brain? In the next few weeks, we will be discussing some mind-blowing ‘mind stuff’ that is constantly affecting our daily life in either a positive or negative way. We will be discovering the voice in your head, the mind and body connection, what thoughts are and how they affect you, and potent techniques that will lead you to finally lose excess weight and keep it off forever. My hope is that you will realize how powerful your thoughts are, and how it’s totally related to your health, weight and emotional wellbeing.
WHO IS THIS ROOMMATE THAT’S MAKING SO MUCH NOISE? You have a mental dialogue going on inside your head at all times. If you’re struggling with your weight, your thoughts might look like this: I must lose weight, but I can’t control myself. I will never drop those pounds; I always gain back whatever I lose. Why will it be different this time? I’m naturally heavy. This is my nisayon (unless you’re taking steroids or have a medical condition that won’t let your body let go of the extra body fat). I’m overweight anyway

so I can eat whatever I want. I’ll be happy losing 25 pounds; I can’t reach my goal of 40 pounds. I don’t like to exercise; even though I know I have to. Have you ever wondered why that voice talks in there? How much of what it says actually makes sense? How does the voice decide when and what to say? If right now you’re hearing, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t have any voices inside my head! Now, that’s the voice I’m talking about! Here’s another example. You’re trying to fall asleep and relax, however, you’re finding it quite impossible because it’s the voice in your head that says: One second, I forgot to call back the teacher. I can’t go to sleep yet! I promised my daughter that I will call tonight about changing her seat; she will really be upset that I didn’t call. But it’s too late now. I’m so tired, why do I have to think about this now? And whoops, I forgot to tell the sheitel macher what time I want to come by…. and this is how the voice goes on and on, disturbing

your well-deserved rest. If you step back and take some time to observe this mental mind chatter, you will notice that it never stops talking! It’s literally a disturbing roommate in your mind that doesn’t leave you alone. All these thoughts are energy vibrations that are very real and can have a tremendous power on every action. It’s the positive thoughts that lead you to take positive action, and the negative thoughts that lead you to take negative action. So if the voice in your head says, I won’t manage to keep my weight off! And it sings this song many times, then yes, it will definitely assist you in ruining all your weight-loss efforts. You will make sure to overeat, and/or perhaps blame it on some outside circumstances; but trust me, you will gain the weight back! All because of that inner voice, which is there to make sure you listen to it, unless you have a counter strategy and know what to do with these thoughts. This voice has something to say about everything you do or see. It tells you if something is good, if it’s bad, if it’s
nice or not. It’s an unwelcome roommate, sharing its unsolicited opinion of everything around you. The voice can be very frustrating if you don’t know how to deal with it. Imagine if you wouldn’t have to take along this irritating voice wherever you go. Imagine knowing how to quiet down your roommate and get it to stop bothering you. Maybe you want your voice to think positive things, but you don’t know how to make that happen? The first thing you want to know is that YOU are not that voice!!! The real ‘you’ is your soul. The soul, which is the neshama, can best be understood as the part that witnesses, watches, notices, is “AWARE” and observes the body and experiences emotions and feelings. You’re basically a soul having human experiences. The neshama is ‘you,’ everything else that goes on, is the “you the neshama” observing. The more you think you are your thoughts, the more power it has over you! If you can stand back like a stranger watching, you will notice that a thought is just a thought
and it won’t have any power.
TO CALM THE NOISY MINDTECHNIQUE To start getting control over the voice, begin by concentrating on your thoughts and just listen to them while becoming aware that the thoughts are not who you are. Without judging the thought, you can hear it and notice its chatter. Then you bring the focus back to your breath. Then comes another thought, just watch it, and bring the focus back to a deep inhale and exhale. Do this every day for 3-5 minutes in the beginning and building it up to as long as you wish. This technique is called mindfulness. If ‘you’ can observe and listen to the thoughts in your head, then obviously the thought can’t be you!! You are just listening. This brings us to next week’s question. How are the mind and body connected?

WHAT’S THE
Chances are you’ve seen more yellow in the last few weeks than you’ve seen in all of 2015. Wonder what unleashed the yellow mania? So did I. Here’s what I discovered (and quite quickly, too): It’s a simple case of cause and effect. RCCS directed attention to the painful yelling of cholei Yisroel, and all of Am Yisroel took up their cries. The volume of cancer patients’ desperate calls was raised, and all of Monsey, among many communities across the US and abroad, has been yelling in yellow ever since.
YELLOW? WHY NOT GREEN? Ask a carefree child what the color blue reminds them of and you’ll hear varying responses: Crashing waves at the beach or perhaps a clear sky on a summer’s day. Ask that same question to a sick child r”l, and you may hear something more along the lines of the scrubs worn by the nurse who drew their blood that morning. Indeed, colors can mean a world of things. For some, red provokes thoughts of anger, while to others it draws thoughts of pain brought on by images of blood and medical tests. Green will get the healthconscious, environment-minded brain going. And then there’s the yellow that has

been giving us all energy boosts over the past month. Sun! Light! Smiley faces ! It’s undeniable: yellow’s got that “invisible force” that gets happiness, positivity and good cheer flowing. Our community has joined forces to spread the happy color in tribute to the heroic cancer patients who cling to life and strive to keep their spirits up throughout their dark and agonizing battle with cancer. After a harrowing day of chemotherapy, a cancer patient may be able to muster only a tiny, pained smile. We’ve joined forces to fill the gap. For weeks, we’ve all been rallying around cholei Yisroel to fill their pained voids with an outpouring of happiness, unity and brotherly love. All across town, we’ve been yelling in yellow: You are not alone! We’re with you in this battle, and we’ll do all we can to bring the light back into your life.
THE RCCS TRANSFORMATION – FROM OW! TO WOW! We’re all into the yellow for barely a month, but RCCS fights to inject yellow light and hope into the lives of cancer patients 365 days a year. While this space does not allow for a detailed description of the many RCCS services, Menashe and Rochel’s story powerfully demonstrates the results of RCCS’s lifesaving intervention. Rochel’s cancer diagnosis hit her and her husband Menashe a few short weeks after their move to New
York from Canada. Still overwhelmed and unsettled from their move, the abysmal news threw them over the top. They were about to give up in defeat, but thankfully their son heard about and involved RCCS. RCCS saved Rochel’s life. Before you grunt and mutter, “totally cliché,” take a minute to wonder why that statement is so overused. It’s actually because of you, your neighbors, your friends and your family. Did you just say, “huh?” It’s quite simple. Year after year, our community has joined forces to fund RCCS – in other words, to the fund the fight for life that’s consuming too many in our own circles. Thanks to yours and the rest of our community’s steadfast support, hundreds of lives have been saved, Rochel’s included. Hence the aforementioned cliché, which I hope will be overused another thousand times – as all of cholei Yisroel merits a complete refuah. But I’m not done with Rochel and Menashe just yet. R’ Meisels, the RCCS medical director, called to check up on Rochel a year later, and was shaken with the news of another recent cancer diagnosis – Menashe’s this time. Menashe was crushed. He had been a rock of support for his wife, and, accustomed to being the giver, he was uncomfortable to don the role of taker. “I will never forget”, Menashe shared with tear-filled eyes, “the moment R’ Meisels said to me, ‘you have friends who are ready to help you,
and you don’t turn to them?!’” Menashe had a surgery scheduled for the following week, but R’ Meisels advised him not to undergo any surgeries or treatments until RCCS could arrange for a top specialist to see him. They got Menachem an expedited appointment with a renowned doctor at Memorial Sloan Kettering, who shocked all involved when he determined that surgery would have been extremely dangerous for Menachem in his present condition, and prescribed a nonsurgical treatment regimen to cure his lymphoma. And here comes the cliché again: another life was saved thanks to RCCS.
LET’S SPREAD THE LIGHT! United and determined, we’re all fighting under the banner of Team Yellow to ensure that this cliché applies again, and again – and yet again, as all our brothers and sisters in pain win their fights against cancer. We’re spreading yellow warmth, smiles and heaps of support from a place of deep caring and unbridled resolve, to ensure that every cancer patient in our community gets a chance at life. With only one week left to wave our yellow banners and yell our support, let’s pump up the energy and give it all we’ve got. Our brothers and sisters are crying out to us from the darkness, but they need not fear. We’re on their team, and we’ll flood their struggles with yellow light until the blackness of cancer is eradicated.

A quick thought of the Goldreb family, presumably preparing for the wedding, sent shivers up my spine. I wouldn’t call it off. Malka’la didn’t really want it canceled either. What she was really asking for, instead of saying it outright and risking failure to receive, was for attention. Lavishing peace on her. It wasn’t something I could give her. But it was something I could be. Maybe. I had so much to daven for. As I opened a siddur, I spent a moment, like Malka’la would, burying myself in its pages, and just talking to the One Who Hears All. “Chuna needs a recovery. And so does Chaya, she needs him to be well, she needs to heal from him not being well. Normally, Bashefer, I would beseech You for health. But begging comes with its own desperation. Malka’la needs us to not beg, not despair, she deserves assurance, peace.” I didn’t ask for anything specific. I just spoke, updating the universe with the facts that had pressed into the left side of my chest, let Hashem know I was paying attention to the deficit. Then I davened. Before going to work, I went into Chuna, to check on him. Sunlight showered his bed with heat and glare. I came closer to him. His eyes were open and rolling

trancelike sleep. I kissed him lightly, my lips grazing the soft outlines of his face. Then I left. Chaya would be here soon. In the meantime, I needed to work. I walked briskly to Rachamim’s warehouse. I took the list he held out and collected the machinery. We sat in his car. “So, what did you decide about the dirah? What did your wife say? Your daughter?” “We’ll take it. Thank you. It’s just… how can I hide it? How can we make it so that it looks like I gave one? I’m just thinking about my mechutan. And about the shidduchim of my other children. No one will agree to something so drastic. Is there a way to say
that I bought it?” “I can only work with the truth,” Rachamim said. “If you want this agreement, you have to want it enough to stand up for it and to fend off everyone else who wants otherwise. It is only through honesty that true blessing flows.” I took a deep breath. I would have to admit this to my mechutan. I couldn’t lie and hide. It would be hard to stand there, in my own feet, and own up. That’s what Malka’la was asking for. She wanted shleimus. She wanted us to be there, not to scrimp and run away. She needed me, as a father, upstanding. I would have to do it. If I had to tell my mechutan, I’d rather do it today. These days, wherever you might find yourself, you can hardly escape hearing about the Presidential Elections coming up next year. Whether it’s a Clinton-Bush rematch or a Trump vs. Sanders contest, people are discussing and analyzing, arguing and pontificating, and finally deciding whom they will honor with their vote as the next US President. In the upcoming weeks and months, we will be following along on the ride, see what it takes to be a candidate for president and who has managed to capture the approval of the most Americans Citizens to finally win the grand position of POTUS (President of the United States). We’ll start by discussing what is needed for a person to be considered a suitable candidate for presidency. First let’s take a look at the Consti-
tution and see what the basic requirements are. Article II is the portion of the Constitution which focuses on the Executive Branch. Section 1 states the following “…No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.” So in 1787, the year the constitution was ratified, this would have meant a white 35-year-old man, who was granted US Citizenship by the creation of the United States and had resided in the colonies for at least 14 years. (Colored citizens were granted the right to vote in the
15th amendment which was passed in 1869, and women in 1920 with the passage of the 19th amendment, so one would imagine they were excluded from running for office even if it is not specifically stated.) We’ve come a long way from there, as the selection of candidates for this upcoming election reflects. And the actual election process has become a lot more intricate and complex with added rules and traditions over the course of 200+ years. To begin our exploration, we will introduce you to both the Republican and Democrat fields. This year, because our current president has already served two terms and is prohibited from running again by the 22nd amendment, both Republicans and Democrats have to compete amongst themselves to gain their party’s nomination.

ANALYSIS
This upcoming election cycle, both the Democrats and Republicans are having primaries - which usually only take place in the years the President has already served two terms and can’t run for reelection again. On the Democratic side, frontrunner Hillary Clinton has been expected to run since she lost the nomination to President Obama in 2008. She was expected to win it, too, unless some rising star on the Democratic side suddenly emerged. This has not happened and despite several major scandals such as the Benghazi Investigation by Congress and the Private Email Scandal, she has managed to remain in front of the pack and is expected to win her Party’s Nomination easily. On the Republican side, though, things have been anything but the expected. Bush, Rubio, and Cruz are names that have been thrown around for some time as potential candidates. While Rubio and Cruz

aren’t faring too poorly, Jeb Bush came into the contest looking weak and has not been able to gain any more popularity despite support from the Republican Establishment as well as a campaign that has been able to raise a lot of the necessary funds needed to run. A candidate who has come out of left field has been Ben Carson. He is a neuroscientist with no previous political experience and has been doing very well in polls. What’s come as a complete shock to most is that Donald Trump, who is considered by most to be something of a cartoon character and has not only launched an actual presidential campaign, is doing so well! He has managed to retain the front running position for several months, to the complete amazement of all. It remains to be seen if the numbers in the polls translate into actual votes when the Primaries and Caucuses roll around in a mere 2+ months, with the Iowa Caucus schedule for Tuesday February 1st.

WHAT MADE YOU MOVE? When we got engaged, my husband, who grew up in Monroe, wanted to live in a chassidish community. Monsey was close enough to his hometown, and I didn’t mind moving. Many of my childhood friends moved away to where their husbands wanted to live, as is customary in the litvish community. We got married in Chicago on a Monday, and by that Thursday we were in Monsey. Shabbos sheva brachos were arranged by my in-laws in Monroe. My parents, who drove up, brought all the stuff I needed to my new home. When I got engaged, I asked my seminary friends, who had grown up in Monsey, for a list of schools. I made phone calls and sent in my résumé. By the time I moved, my job was waiting for me. Three weeks after I got married, the school year started, and so did I.

ARE YOU RENTING OR DID YOU PURCHASE? At first, we rented a place which my husband and his sister found. I came once during my engagement and was shown two apartments, from which I chose one. I also chose my furniture then. The rest was up to my husband to set up. I lived on Secor St., which is busy and crowded. It was fine in the beginning, but now we live in what’s almost a dead-end. We do have the highway right in our backyard, but that doesn’t seem to bother us. When we bought our home, it was once again my husband who took care of all the arrangements. When our choices were narrowed down to a few options, I came to have a look. We chose the Chestnut Ridge area because it is quiet and private.
HOW DO YOU LIKE THE NEIGHBORHOOD? There are groceries everywhere! In Chicago, there were

maybe two groceries, and even those didn’t sell fruits and veggies, let alone school supplies. I live on a street that’s populated by Jews and non-Jews, very similar to the way I grew up. People babysit and lend to each other, which is nice.
WHAT’S THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECT OF LIVING HERE? Chicago is a city, set up like a grid. The Monsey streets twist and wind confusingly. I used to walk around Monsey, literally, with a map in my hands, until I figured out the neighborhood. Each time I visited a new area, I’d walk

with my trusty map. Even today, a new street might pop up right behind mine and I’ll have no idea.

HOW DO YOU FIND THE SCHOOL SYSTEM?
WHAT DO YOU MISS?
It’s great. My son’s in Bais Dovid, my daughter’s in Bnos Derech Yisroel. My twins are in Taubenfeld’s playgroup and my baby is at the babysitter. For myself, getting a job in a school was the most important part of my move. I enjoy the steadiness and routine of working with the same partners all day, every year. Yet, the freshness of getting a new group of girls each year is invigorating. My friendships among the staff are a big part of my life.
Maybe, if I would have lived near my mother, I could have gotten my siblings to babysit. For the first year and a half after my twins were born we had a full-time babysitter, who not only took care of the kids, but allowed me some time off if I needed to go out at night. I’m really the type who’d just do everything on my own, but I learned to accept the help. I have a girl on my block who gives her chesed hour to us, playing with the kids while I make Shabbos.
WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO GET USED TO?
HOW IS MONSEY ALIGNED WITH YOUR VALUES?
I’m an easygoing, friendly type. Having transitioned from a more Litvish upbringing to a chassidish lifestyle - where not unlike marriage, the changes are positive and have to be taken in stride - the acclimation to life in Monsey was not something that was too difficult for me. I could share with you, though, what I had to get used to in adopting a chassidish lifestyle: my main sacrifice was not eating gebrokts on Pesach. We’re usually at my parents for Pesach, and, in deference to us, my mother stopped making gebroktz food such as matza apple kugel. Now my siblings and I look forward to the last day, when we can have our kneidlach and crush our matza into our soup. Though my siblings will eat their matzah
I’m always offered the opportunity to do chesed, and my children can be a part of it. Say I’m in a store and I see someone who doesn’t drive. It’s easy for me to offer a ride, it helps them, and my children get to be part of the chesed of taking someone home. Many of my friends here don’t drive, and my children always come along for the ride. DIY Chic Without Breaking the Bank

Setting
out to create a memorable Chanukah party for The Monsey View, I had two goals in mind. Firstly, I wanted to prepare something unforgettable that would stay in party goers’ minds for quite some time. Secondly, I wanted to do it as inexpensively as possible. Here then, are the results of my efforts! For roughly the same price as an event served on high-quality plastic, I found that it was possible to create quite the chic party! Bear in mind that if something pictured isn’t exactly your style, you can experiment with different color schemes and elements to create the specific look that you are aiming for. Starting at the fabric store, I perused various options for table coverings. I wanted to keep it cheap, but still wanted to the fabric to make a statement. I settled on the sauve teal suede featured in the photo. At only $10 a yard I knew I had snagged a great bargain! Two yards later I had enough to cover a five-foot table in style. The suede fabric came in a large variety of colors. If you’d like a more classic look, consider neutral tones like cream or beige. While in the fabric store, I also bought vinyl to custom make placemats for the party. I chose to bring in leopard print for a fun and lively contrast to the solid colors I’d be completing the look with. Vinyl comes in many colors and prints, and having spent only $12 on one yard I had enough material to cut six placemats without breaking the budget. Here’s where things get really creative! Feathers are trending now, and served as an inexpensive centerpiece option in place of flowers. There are all types of feathers, coming in many sizes and colors, but I liked the ones on the smaller side. Keep an eye out for ostrich feathers; they have a special fluffy quality that lends sophistication to a table. Most arts and crafts store should carry feathers; I got around 50 pieces for under $10. To prop the feathers up, look around for any cute little bottle or vase you can find. At $10 a piece I spent more than I originally intended, but I am sure that you can easily find other holders at Amazing Savings for half that price. The great thing about the bottle-prop option is that feathers require no water and set up in a flash while taking up minimal space on the table. Keep your color scheme in mind when shopping. Next, I headed out to Ikea and found these slim white candle holders for $16 for a set of three. I also found a huge pack of candles for $5. Lastly, I selected these cups at only $2.99 a piece. If traveling isn’t your thing, check your local bargain store. I am sure you can find exciting things in a similar price range.

And now for the most exciting find! Cheese slates! Check your local kitchenware store to see if they carry this clever invention. I paid $23 for a set of four cheese slates and four matching coasters. Traditionally used for slicing and serving cheese, they can also be used as chargers to place underneath the main plate. I chose to shake things up a bit and use the cheese slate as the plate! Don’t worry, cheese slates are FDA approved for contact with food. The charcoal color of the slate works well with bright and bold colors, and anything that looks like a chalkboard is currently considered high-style. If you choose to serve on a traditional plate, you can still enjoy these cheese slates by providing chalk for party-goers to doodle on. You can also display a cheese slate with a chalk-written menu for an added touch of flair. On each cheese slate I placed a drawstring bag containing the evening’s graphology game. You can easily find a similar option in any party goods store. Alternatively, you can use a fancy envelope that blends in with your vision. I spent $10 on 10 bags. Last but not least, I wanted to dress up the party with unique cutlery. Would you believe that the forks, knives, and spoons pictured are plastic?! Nowadays, you don’t have to break the bank to find something bold and different to make your party stand out. I paid under $6 for a serving of four! Check your local party goods store to see your color and style options. For under $120 I was able to set the table in a fashionable manner. Dress your table up or down as you see fit by trying different items for different effects. By playing around with various options you can also create a memorable party on a budget!

GOAT CHEESE SALAD I’m always dreaming of creating new salads, since I find it boring to make the same ones over and over again. So there I was, walking down the supermarket aisles, when my imagination went wild and this goat cheese salad recipe was born. It became one of my family’s favorites, and I now make it almost every week. 8 oz goat cheese Eggs and panko crumbs for coating Butter for frying 1 bag spring mix of lettuce 1 package cherry tomatoes 1 can pineapple tidbits drained ¾ cup honey glazed almond sticks
DRESSING: 1 cup oil ½ cup ketchup ¼ cup vinegar ½ cup brown sugar Pinch of salt and pepper 1. Create quarter-sized balls from goat cheese and double coat with eggs and panko crumbs. (I like to dip the cheese balls into a plate of well-beaten eggs and then put them into a plastic bag that contains the panko crumbs, shaking until well-coated. Then I repeat the process.) 2. Fry in butter until golden brown on all sides. 3. Combine salad ingredients and sprinkle honey glazed almond sticks on top. 4. Combine dressing ingredients. 5. Once the goat cheese balls are golden brown, top the salad with them and add dressing.
HEAVENLY GOAT CHEESE SPINACH LASAGNA Once I was dining out at a kosher Italian restaurant. I felt like I was standing in middle of the beautiful city of Milan. The air smelled Italian and the atmosphere was totally Italian. I watched in awe as the Italians flipped pizza pies in the air, but it was the sight of them making homemade pasta that took the cake. This lasagna dish was part of the experience in my “Milan bubble.” It was so delicious that I just had to duplicate it! I came home and with the help of Hashem I am able to bring this fabulous dish to your kitchen. However, I made it easy for you and me: no homemade pasta! Oven-ready lasagna ½ stick butter 32-oz. frozen spinach 1 pint heavy cream 4 cloves garlic Salt and pepper to taste Oregano 8 oz. shredded Muenster cheese 4 oz. goat cheese Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS: 1.
Preheat oven to 350°.
2. In a 2 ½-quart pot, melt a ½ stick of butter. Add frozen spinach with the 4 cloves of garlic. 3. Once spinach is cooked, add heavy cream and cook until it boils. Add salt and pepper to taste. 4. In a 9-by-13 pan, start piling the layers of lasagna. (I made 4 layers.) Divide heavy cream/spinach mixture, shredded Muenster cheese, and goat cheese evenly among the lasagna layers. Add a few sprinkles of oregano between layers. 5. Bake covered for 40 minutes, and then 10 minutes uncovered.

CRÈME BRULE This is the sort of dessert you picture yourself eating in your local upscale restaurant; definitely a dessert you never dreamed of serving at home! Well I’ve got news for you: it’s easy and delicious, can be prepared a night before (only the torching needs to be done on the spot), and is THE dessert that everyone will be raving about for weeks to come!
INGREDIENTS 1 egg 4 egg yolks 1/2 cup sugar, plus 1 tablespoon for each serving 3 cups heavy cream 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 tablespoon coffee liqueur
DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 300°. 1. Combine the egg, egg yolks, and ½ cup of the sugar together in the bowl of an electric mixer, on low speed, until just combined. 2. Meanwhile, scald the heavy cream in a saucepan until it’s very hot to the touch, but not boiled. 3. Slowly add the cream to the eggs, with the mixer on low speed. 4. Place the ramekins in a baking pan and carefully pour boiling water into the pan, until halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the custard is set when gently shaken. Remove the custards from the water bath, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate until firm. 5. Before serving, spread 1 tablespoon of sugar evenly on the top of each ramekin and heat with a kitchen blowtorch until the sugar caramelizes evenly. Allow to sit at room temperature for a minute until the caramelized sugar hardens.

I’m not usually one to find myself at loss for words, but several times throughout my interview with Mrs. Grama of Lakewood, NJ, I was left positively speechless. I had called her to learn more about graphology, and in doing so discovered that the world of handwriting analysis is absolutely fascinating! Perhaps it was the stories that she told me, or perhaps it was the sheer amount of knowledge that Mrs. Grama possesses about human nature, but I will no longer consider handwriting a mere combination of paper and ink. When I first spoke with Mrs. Grama I knew very little about graphology, not imagining that such a broad world lay within the written print. Upon hanging up, I realized that I knew even less than I had originally thought. “Graphology is the study of people’s handwriting, so that one can get to know everything about a person.” Mrs. Grama tells me. “Handwriting reveals everything about a person, from cognitive ability, likes and dislikes, skills and talents, and how they interact socially. It even reveals mishegasen about people, and their quirks.” Jokingly, I question if I should be scared to submit my handwriting for analysis. “Handwriting is not about good or bad.” Mrs. Grama says, “Every person has inborn

characteristics, like hair and eye color, and the ability to sing or not. It’s about using what you have, in the right way.” She then continues by illustrating how each characteristic can be used in a positive manner, should the person choose to do so. “The midah of being stingy and tight-fisted shows in the handwriting as the same as someone who is careful with baal tashchis. It comes from the same root. A baal habuster who is able to make a beautiful meal from leftovers from day to day has used that characteristic in a positive way.” Mrs. Grama then tells me that in all of the years that she has been doing graphology she has never seen two identical sets of characteristics evident in the handwritings that she has analyzed. “A Yid is such a complex briah,” she tells me, saying that she could write a whole book about each person that submits his or her handwriting, although she usually limits a full analysis to between six and eight pages. When I question her if she is able to determine a person’s age and gender through the handwriting, she answers that she requests three details along with the submission. Knowing the age, gender, and if the person is left- or righthanded helps her to analyze the handwriting in the proper manner. She has to know these things, because for instance, if a sample is submitted by a
12-year-old, certain things may make obvious sense, whereas it would reveal vastly different points if the same writing were submitted by an older person. While on the topic, I question whether certain ages are more difficult to evaluate. The easiest generation to analyze is the elderly, I am told. Long beyond the days of attempting to impress their peers, the geriatric community generally is sure of whom they are. Teenagers present the biggest challenge, as they are still in the process of building their character and determining their place in this world. Like a construction site, Mrs. Grama compares teenagers to a work in progress. Children, I am told, are difficult. Although she is able to pick out certain character traits of a child under bar or bas mitzvah, in general she tells me that it is difficult to do a full analysis on someone under the age of 12. I learn that natural handwriting is the most important aspect of determining what makes a person tick. Children who are still absorbing the skill-set of crossing “T’s” and dotting “I’s” haven’t yet mastered the ability to write naturally. Every letter is painstakingly formed. The same goes for people who attempt to write in a foreign language. I break out in spontaneous laughter as Mrs. Grama relates an interesting story on the topic. When she was younger, she had been invited to a chasidishe

ENHANCE YOUR CHANUKAH PARTY WITH THIS FUN, EMPOWERING GRAPHOLOGY GAME: Step 1: Collect a sample handwriting from each person who will be participating in the game. Each paper should be a minimum of a half page of writing. The person should write with the hand they are most comfortable writing with, and in their first language. Please write the person’s age, gender, and if they are left or right handed on the top of the page. Note: Some participants may find writing a tedious task. Make it enjoyable by giving them an interesting prompt, such as: If I were to give you $300, what would you do with it? Step 2: Mrs. Grama will analyze each writing, and will respond with a list of characteristics that are unique to each writer. Each point on the personalized list costs $5. It is recommended to receive a minimum of two points per person, as many people will share certain, but never all, characteristics. Step 3: Calculate the number of points desired for the total number of game participants, and multiply the total by $5. Mail the handwriting samples and a check for the total amount to Mrs. Grama at 2 Omni Court, Lakewood, NJ 08701. For questions, please call: 732-363-8119. Mrs. Grama will send you back the analyses. Step 4: Place the personalized point lists inside envelopes or drawstring bags as portrayed in the party featured here. Randomly place each list at seats around the table. Each person will take a turn reading the list at his or her place, and the crowd will try to guess whose positive characteristics are being described. Enjoy!

bungalow colony to entertain the women there with her skill. Each lady had submitted her own handwriting for analysis, and then everyone brought their husbands’ as well. One by one Mrs. Grama picked up each paper. “Not natural; please resubmit,” was the phrase that she found herself repeating over and over again. Each man had thought that he was required to submit his handwriting in English for evaluation, but as Mrs. Grama tells me, “When a person doesn’t write in their first language, the neshama can’t shine though”. Only after the handwritings were resubmitted in Yiddish, was Mrs. Grama able to evaluate each piece. It’s not the language, I learn, because it isn’t the words that Mrs. Grama looks at. Her personal graphology technique goes beyond the boundaries of language. Mrs. Grama has analyzed handwritings in foreign tongues- as long as it’s natural for the person- that’s all that matters to her. The shape of the letters, the pressure one applies when writing, the spacing; she looks for an infinite number of details. Those details “pop out” at her, she says. A self-honed skill, she learned how to interpret various details through years of studying handwriting, and the people around her. With an uncanny ability to understand the makeup of a person, she has received haskamah from a Rav to engage in graphology. She always tries to be careful with lashon hara, and will make sure that the person receiving the analysis is the person who requested it. In Eretz Yisroel, I am told, graphology is quite common. Many times before hiring a job applicant or engaging in a shidduch, the hiring party or

potential in-law will request permission to submit a sample for analysis. Through analysis, the submitting party will be able to learn more about the prospect’s skills and talents, as well as characteristics that might make the person either suitable or not suitable for the position of employee or child-in-law. Here in America, graphology is still in its infancy, with Mrs. Grama being the forerunner in the field. Having noticed interesting phenomena with my own handwriting, I ask Mrs. Grama what she attributes the following to: Before Sukkos this year, my handwriting was a jumbled mess, but when I mistakenly picked up a pen to prepare a grocery list for chol hamoed shopping, I was shocked to see beautiful, flowing lettersquite different from my regular mode of writing. Immediately Mrs. Grama tells me that she has studied much handwriting from people who have written many pages, either through her own experience as a teacher, or through people who have submitted pages of handwritten seforim. Although the pages may vary at a glance, they will all tell her the same message about the intrinsic makeup of a person. On a general level, the variation can be attributed to feelings one is experiencing in a current situation. Whether a person is tired when writing, bored with a course, or has no interest in a specific subject, it will come through on the page, such as the pre-Sukkos harried-ness and subsequent rest evident in my own example. When I am ready to hang up the phone, knowing that I have just scratched the surface of this fascinating topic, I am left with a story reverberating through the echoes of my mind. Earlier, Mrs.
Grama had related a fascinating, heart-touching story of how she had been hired by a nursing home to entertain the ladies through graphology. The room was full of wheelchairs, walkers, and aides. Tremors could be seen shaking through the hands of the elderly ladies as they tried to write. “Teyre Tatty, help me!” Mrs. Grama prayed, not knowing what she would find to say about each woman. When all of the handwritings were handed in, Mrs. Grama chuckling relates that she almost fell off of her chair. She was so shocked by what the first sample revealed, not imaging that what she saw in the writing could be attributed to any of the frail ladies sitting in the room. Struggling internally, she didn’t know if she should say “You were” or “You are.” She decided to use the present tense as she read the results out loud, and in doing so was blessed with Siyata Dishmaya. At the end of the reading, this elderly lady jumped from her seat and announced, “That’s ME, everybody!”
“You are the life of the party,” she announced, although nobody there looked like the life of any party. “You have a magnetic personality; wherever you go people flock around you. You are charming. You have leadership. You are good a conversationalist.” Mrs. Grama continued reading from the list, glancing up and around the room. Near the back wall she saw an elderly woman slowly perking up. Like a withered flower given a fresh drink of water, she began to blossom. At the end of the reading, this elderly lady jumped from her seat and announced, “That’s ME, everybody!” Moving on to the next paper in the pile, Mrs. Grama began reading, “You have excellent taste, and always look dainty
and lovely.” Unfortunately, no woman in the assisted living home looked overly lovely, but Mrs. Grama was looking at the essence of the women, rather than externals. As she continued, she saw an elderly lady touching her clothing, fixing her sheitel, and trying to make herself as put-together as possible. “That’s me,” the woman said demurely. “You understand people deeply. You are a good listener,” Mrs. Grama read aloud as the room burst out laughing with merry acknowledgment. She had been looking at the handwriting of a former psychologist. The rest of the pile continued in this vein, with each woman slowly coming to life as she was reminded of her essence. About two years later, Mrs. Gramma received a call from the nursing home requesting her to come once again to the women in their care. Mrs. Grama resisted, saying that she will only be repeating the same things she said previously, as basic characteristics don’t change from year to year, or even decade to decade. But the nursing home staff cajoled her, telling her that each of the women had been empowered by Mrs. Grama’s ability to see beyond the wheelchairs and walkers, deep into who each woman truly was. For these women, many of whom didn’t even have family to remind them of their formerly active lives; the paper with their personal analysis was a validation. Mrs. Grama returned to the nursing home once again to room of full of tearful women. Finally, someone had seen who they really were. And me? Well, I think I need to find a box of tissues. My eyes seem to be watering just a bit…

Speaking By nature I’m a skeptic, wary to believe in anything beyond the typical humdrum methods of time-proven techniques in relation to… well, anything! The scope of wariness begins with non-traditional medicine, and crosses over into the realm of schooling and cleaning supplies. Although the idea of “alternative methods” can sound charming, and even hold potential lure with the promise of a better, greener life, I still find myself holding back, not quite ready to make the change. I guess that’s why graphology didn’t really speak to me at first. The whole concept of analyzing people through their scribbled print sounded quite foreign to my ears. And then I sat down with Mrs. Grama and was blown away. By the end of the interview I felt that I just had to try out this handwriting analysis for myself, and so I mailed my own cat-scrawl in, with payment for three positive points, and waited to be put under the microscope. Mrs. Grama called me back before faxing over her analysis to The Monsey View office, and told me that I had a “very interesting” handwriting, which showed a person in which seemingly contradictory traits are able to thrive. When she faxed back my analysis, I was quite surprised to find that many things were right on target. But I’ll let you see that for yourself! Mrs. Grama's Analysis of My Handwriting (see facing page): Your handwriting seems to indicate: 1. You are a very clear thinking individual-you get things straight the first time, both intellectually, as well as technically. You dislike and avoid ambiguity, confusion, or being only partially informed. Even in your most pressured or exhausted moments, your mind always functions with perfect clarity. 2. There are two opposite characteristics that usually cannot co-exist in one person- but you have them both, for you they blend and thrive, much to your benefit (and that of everyone else). You are a dreamer, you have a vivid imagination, and you can even entertain seemingly unattainable hopes. Yet you are nonetheless very practical, reliable, logical, and efficient. 3. Here’s another interesting pair of seemingly contradictory characteristics that you have: You can mega multitask, you get done in one day what most people need a week or more to accomplish- yet you never omit the most minute details- which you do to perfection. So, was it right on target? I asked a few people what they have to say about his analysis and what they know about me as person.

My Husband: True, true, true! What stands out most to me, is that when you are involved in a project it becomes your single focus, and you really pay attention to doing it perfectly. You also thrive off of structure and knowing what is expected of you at each moment. My Coworker: Working closely with you, I can attest that Mrs. Grama was right on target with her description of your clarity, organization, and the creativity to round it out. I found it mind-boggling that it took Mrs. Grama just a few minutes of analysis to tap into what took me a few weeks to learn! My Boss: I was fascinated and awed by Mrs. Grama's skill at analyzing a person's handwriting and creating such a vivid profile of that person. It is mind boggling how she so succinctly summed up your beautiful traits and personality based only on a small writing sample. As someone who works closely with you, I can attest to the remarkable accuracy of each and every detail in the analysis. I could never have summed it up so aptly myself! Myself: Wow! I see Mrs. Grama really picked up on some of my main points; I guess it just “pops out” at her that I hate, hate, hate ambiguity and confusion. I find that I become very stressed and overwhelmed unless I know exactly what I am supposed to be doing in any given situation. I love lists, charts, and monotonous routine! (Add a little violin music and you have a really happy camper!) As for having a vivid imagination - I am, after all, a writer! It comes with the territory. But I do like to live in reality, because after all, not all dreams come true. I think this is where emunah and bitachon meet. I believe very strongly that Hashem can give me anything I desire, but I’m perfectly willing to accept that sometimes the answer is “no,” and that it’s only for my own benefit. I’ve never considered myself a multi-tasker however, as I can’t speak on the phone and read simultaneously. I really focus on one thing at a time, or risk becoming overwhelmed, but I definitely do move through my list at an incredible speed, and I try very hard to do things properly. (Except cleaning. That’s what hired help is for!) At the end of the day I think Mrs. Grama just about hit the nail on the head!

DAIRY IN HALACHA It is forbidden to knead milk into dough, unless the loaf is small and able to be eaten at one sitting, or the shape is different from a standard loaf, so that one will not mistakenly eat it together with meat. When using imitation dairy products

together with meat, one should be careful in regards to maris ayin. One should include almond pieces in a meat dish that incorporates almond milk, or display the parve packaging on the table while eating together with meat. One should have separate loaves of bread for milk and meat meals.
CREATIVE USES Milk has long been touted as a natural moisturizer. To give yourself a rejuvenating facial, combine half a cup powdered milk with enough water to make a paste. Spread the mixture over the surface of your facial skin and let it absorb for 30 minutes. Wash and rinse. You’ll find your skin has a soft feel and fresh glow. Don’t try this if you have a milk allergy! Shying away from the chemicals found in household cleaners? For a natural alternative to furniture cleaner, combine milk and lemon juice. The creamy

With Chanukah festivities in the air, adults all over are planning Chanukah parties. How would you like to help with making the food, not just with setting the tables? This delicious
cheese mousse has very few ingredients, only a few steps to follow, but tastes heavenly. Just make sure to save one for yourself since it will probably be finished very quickly.
Ingredients: 2 boxes of 8-oz. non whipped cream cheese softened (take it out of the fridge 2 hours before using it) 2 cups heavy cream 2 cups confectioner’s sugar

CHEESE MOUSSE-CHOCOLATE COIN DESSERT
Combine the heavy cream, confectioner’s sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl with a fork. The cream cheese may need to be mashed with the fork.
Mix the heavy cream and cream cheese mixtures together softly.
Sprinkle your favorite topping. You could use crushed chocolate chip cookies, nut crunch, nut brittle, mini chocolate balls, chocolate curls or any color sprinkles that match the colors of the party you are using it for.
Using a piping bag with a #21 tip, pipe the cheese mixture into the hard cupcake holders (if you do not have a piping bag you can use a plastic bag and make a hole in the corner.)
Place a chocolate coin on top.
Freeze until a few minutes before serving.

QUESTION:
Lately I have become bewildered when dealing with my strong-willed four-year-old. I love him dearly, but sometimes his behavior is inappropriate. He is often defiant, disagreeing with whatever I have to say. He has a hard time listening, and has difficulty cooperating. It’s really getting to me, personally, and affecting the overall household atmosphere. What can I do to make him improve his behavior and follow instructions?
THE PARENTING COACH RESPONDS: It can be quite frustrating for parents when their kids don’t listen to them. There are countless opportunities in the day for them to listen, or choose not to, and when they don’t cooperate, it can truly be a challenge. However, there are several things that we have to bear in mind when our kids don’t listen or have a hard time cooperating. Firstly, instead of asking, “Is there a way to make my son listen?” we might want to rephrase it and ask, “How can we HELP our son listen?” We know that it is not easy to listen. Listening requires both conforming and concentration. Therefore, we want to help our children by minimizing the commands on our kids, thereby maximizing the likelihood of easy compliance. I’ve compiled these tips to help you out with this.
LEARN THE UNDERLYING REASON FOR THE MISBEHAVIOR: There are many things that can cause misbehavior. Try to

find the reason why he started acting out the way he does recently. Is something bothering him? Jealousy of a sibling? Perhaps he is simply tired or hungry after a daunting day in school. Or he might be having trouble transitioning from school activities to home life. Could it be that he’s having trouble expressing himself verbally? Or maybe he’s having an issue with processing or following directions? Perhaps you have recently been under heavy stress? Kids are acutely sensitive to disconnections from us, and always respond by acting out. Once you’ve figured out what his triggers are, you can now start to reduce or eliminate the disobedience. If you will truly take note of the causes, you’ll be surprised at how easily you can set your child up for success. Visual cues such as showing how to perform the activity that you would like him to do, or tactile cues like tapping him or direct eye contact, are just a few examples on how you can help your child to listen.
ADVICE
VALUE HIS INDEPENDENCE:
Children desperately want to perform, but sometimes they lack the necessary skills or emotional intelligence to do so.
Our goal as parents is to teach our children life skills, so that they can one day iy”H manage on their own and become productive people. Strong-willed children already have a strong dose of independence, and it should be recognized as a strength. Many great people were strong-willed and mischievous. It is a sign of good character, creativity, and persistence. We need to cultivate a child’s independence while helping him learn to cooperate.
GET HIS INPUT: Get him used to problem solving and sequencing his activities. When we include our kids in day-to-day decision making, they will be more likely to listen. For example: “Bedtime is at 7 pm. How do you want to work out getting ready for bed?” “When do you think is a good time to do homework, finish playing, get into pajamas, and read a bedtime story?” The objective is not to enforce military precision, but rather to help him take charge of his time and responsibilities.
POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT: Anytime he behaves well you should acknowledge it! When we praise children we want to be specific and descriptive. He doesn’t have to do anything extraordinary to deserve the praise. “You held my hand when we crossed the street; you acted in a very safe manner.” Or “You shared your

toy with a friend; you were being kind and thoughtful.” Also, try to view his behavior in a positive light. It is very easy to see the bad. However, to be effective with a challenging child, you need to be really mindful and look for the good in every interaction. Instead of, “You gave me such a hard time getting into bed; it took you forever and you kept on crying and misbehaving…” say: “You got into bed; you did not want to; you were so upset about going to sleep... but you did anyways...” These positive efforts will always be more effective than punishments.
KEEP YOUR COOL: If you react to your child’s behavior by losing your temper, he will most likely respond with more disobedience and disrespect. Remember this rule: The louder you want to get- the quieter you should speak. After all being said, understand that more than anything else children crave parental approval. Children desperately want to perform, but sometimes they lack the necessary skills or emotional intelligence to do so. By practicing the abovementioned suggestions, you will b’ezras Hashem succeed in helping your strong-willed son reach his full potential in peace. I watched the first candle slowly sputter and then burst into a flame, its warm glow casting festive light onto all corners of the room. Spirited singing merged with off-key musical candles in a pleasurable cacophony of Chanukah joy. I couldn’t get my eyes off that first Chanukah licht, the harbinger of all that happiness. I stared at that little flame kindled specifically in the darkest time of year, lit close to the ground, with the goal of bringing light to a dark world. There was a theme here, and it was hard to miss: a solitary flame has the power to bring light and warmth. The house settled down for the night, the first flame quivering in its waning state. I gave my kitchen a once over. The whiff of fried latkes and donuts lingered, but was now overpowered by the septic smell of the cleaning agents that had returned the kitchen to its gleaming status.

I’m in no particular rush.” “Care to taste these? You know how doughnuts lose every ounce of goodness at their 12-hour anniversary… How about we play a short game while we finish them off?” Over boggle, doughnuts, and tea, Chavy suddenly confided, “You don’t know how much this means to me. With my family in Brooklyn, and my husband still putting in so many hours traveling back and forth for his job, having an adult to talk to means the world to me.” I was warmed by her sincerity. I told her how wonderful it had been to wind down after such a hectic day with pleasant company. And I meant it. I knew that I had dispelled a little darkness; my first candle had been lit. The next morning I awoke with the leisure of a woman with no pressing duties. My pajama-clad clan carelessly scampered about, the aroma of a hot breakfast wafting through the house. My culinary-inclined teens were cooking up a storm, and it looked like today was going to be a free day. I contemplated my options. I could read a book or take my kids shopping.

I didn’t even have to worry about supper as my mother was scheduled to host a Chanukah party that evening. She had been planning it since the moment the Sukkah decorations were off! And then, the realization dawned on me: Instead of making the day about ME, I could go pitch in to make my mother’s load lighter. My mother was surprised, and very thrilled to see me. We spent a couple of hours working in camaraderie, turning the place inside out into a palace of festivity. Much later, as I stifled a yawn at the party, I knew that the second candle had been lit and it warmed my heart to have kindled it. Chanukah progressed. I watched the third licht come to life, and I lit my third candle, too. This time, I spread a glow of warmth to my great-aunt. Tante Shaindel was temporarily undergoing painstaking rehabilitation at The Friedwald Center, and I was sure that she could use the company. After a few hours at Billy Beez, I marched my troop down Friedwald’s corridor and into Tante Shaindel’s room. We threw an impromptu Chanukah party, captured it all on Polaroid camera, instantly developed the shots and hung them on the wall across Tante Shaindel’s bed. We left, leaving the laughter, the memories, and a sincere promise to be back. The fourth candle leapt to life. I stared at the menorah, realizing that this favorite time of year was halfway through, soon to elude our grasp. There
were still so many dark corners to reach! I knew who was going be the recipient today. All it took was a phone call. “How are you, Ruchy? Now with the sale season in full swing, I’d love to give my wardrobe a lift. And you know… there’s no one I trust like you for these type of purchases. Can you free up some time? Do you think we could schedule a night out tomorrow?” Living alone, Ruchy refused to be a burden on anyone. It took a lot of sincere convincing to persuade her to join the expedition. We spent a few hours doing what we womenfolk like best: shopping. With therapy and self-help being the hype, retail therapy was the only thing I really believed would kindle the flame in Ruchy. Thursday passed in a whirlwind of cleaning, cooking, and Shabbos preparations and Friday was progressing in the same manner. But I knew that before I welcomed Shabbos, I had to tithe some time to kindle my fifth candle. My husband was a neat freak, and the state of my closet aggravated him to no end. I decided to forgo the extra dessert I’d planned on whipping up, choosing instead to devote the time to cleaning out that messy closet. I knew that as I filled bags with various clothes for giveaway, I’d be lighting the light of shalom bayis, as well as the light in others’ eyes as they received the new clothing. Mission accomplished, I readied myself for candle lighting. My regular Shabbos guest was in good spirits, feeling at home. This week, the call
was placed to him, instead of by him. Before he’d had a chance to solicit a place for Shabbos, I called to inform him that we were looking forward to having him grace our table. With dignity preserved, there was light dancing in his eyes, and he seemed to partake in the food like a man at his own table. Motzei Shabbos was a busy night. I hastily addressed a check to RCCS. I had meant to attend the function in my neighborhood, but that night had coincided with another event I had gone to. I sealed the envelope with a little prayer that the light of Chanukah finds its way into homes across

way that she had helped me throughout Chanukah vacation. “The best thing about having a sister is that I always have a friend,” was slipped into Shevy’s pocketbook when I met her later the next day. One had a family photo displayed across it. “Grandmothers are the glue that hold the family together,” it read in my daughter’s handwriting.

I surveyed the stack of chocolate bars I’d carefully wrapped and matched each with its recipient. “Of all the gifts of motherhood, I count you as the biggest one,” went under Sara Chana’s pillow. I scribbled a “Thank you,” on the underside for the

I addressed a bundle for mailing, and then displayed the last chocolate bar on my dresser. It read: “One candle can ignite a thousand flames without diminishing its own light.” The last light of Chanukah may have been fading away, but I knew that it didn’t take much to keep its flame aglow.

BY ANN ZEILINGOLD What happens to your loan after it closes? Banks often buy and sell residential mortgages. It is common to receive a letter saying that your loan was sold or the servicing was transferred. When you close on your mortgage, you sign a document allowing your loan to be transferred and agree that the terms will not be changed. A mortgage can sometimes be sold two or three times just in the first year. This can create some confusion and angst. In most cases the transfers go smoothly, but sometimes the escrow lags, or one servicer is supposed to pay the taxes or the insurance premium that month and when it gets transferred, they expect the new lender to pay and the new lender sometime doesn’t, thinking that the old lender is paying the bill. This rarely happens, but it can. I once had a case in which both the new and old lenders of a client paid the Spring Valley village tax, and so the new lender adjusted the mortgage payment upwards to cover the shortfall created by both taxes being paid. It took a few months to straighten it out. They had to get a refund from Spring Valley, which was paid to the old lender, who in turn mailed it to the client, who then mailed it to the new lender. All this took about three months. Meanwhile the client had to pay a mortgage payment which was $600 more than what it should have been, until the escrow department straightened it all out. This transferring of loans opens the door for scams. Con artists take advantage of that. They create fake companies, pretend they are the new owners of your loan and take your payments

If you ever get a letter stating your loan was sold, verify it before you mail the payment.

Receiving a letter notifying you that your mortgage was sold from lender A to lender B usually doesn't mean a scam. Often, when a mortgage is sold, lender A continues to service the loan and nothing changes for the borrower. But in some instances, the loan buyer becomes the new servicer and borrowers are required to send their payments to lender B instead. Under federal rules, whenever the servicer on a loan changes, the borrower should be notified with a "Goodbye" letter from the current servicer and a "Hello" letter from the new servicer. If you ever get a letter stating your loan was sold, verify it before you mail the payment.

And don't rely on the phone numbers listed on the letters, as they may lead back to the scammer. To verify if your loan was in fact transferred or sold, call your old lender, who will have all the information for you

ארויסגעשטעלט דעם פאקט אז דער דאזיגער ארט איז צי קליין צו פארנעמען דעם ציבור חסידים ,האט מען זיך ארויסגעלאזט אויף א פרישער זוך-אקציע ,אפירצוזוכן א פרישן ארט פאר באיאנער חסידים וואו צו דאווענען. עס האט זיך דאן געוואנדן צו די עסקנים ,הגה"צ ר' אהרן מאיר אייכנשטיין זצ"ל ,מקיוויאשד-מאנסי ,וועלכער האט דאן פארמאגט זיין בית-המדרש, אז ער איז גרייט צו זיין דער בעל-אכסניא פון באיאנער חסידים און אוועקגעבן זיין בית-המדרש פארן באנוץ פון די חסידים. אזוי איז טאקע געווען ,באיאנער חסידים האבן אנגעהויבן דאווענען ביים קיוויאשדער רב אין בית-המדרש .דער רב האט זיך צוגעשטעלט און זיך אוועקגעגעבן מיט אלעס וואס מען האט געדארפט לטובת הצלחת בית-המדרש .די מתפללים וואס געדענקען נאך יענע צייטן ,רעדן דערפון מיט בענקשאפט און נאסטאלאגיע ,אין בית-המדרש האט דעמאלס נישט געפעלט קיין כי-היא-זה ,אלעס איז געווען צוגעשטעלט אויפן בעסטן פארנעם .אלס גבאי האט געדינט הרה"ח ר' יוסף סאלאמאן ע"ה און דער רב האט געדינט אלס בעל-קורא מיט א געוואלדיגע נעימות כמנהג אבותיו. אויך אין רוחניות איז דער שטיבל דעמאלס געווען מלא וגדוש .מען פלעגט זיך צוזאמענקומען אין די שבתים ,פארברענגען בדברי תורה ובסיפורי צדיקים ,פון צייט צו צייט פלעגן קומען אלטע חסידים ,א שטייגער ווי ר' משה גאלדהירש ע"ה ,וועלכער פלעגט קומען וויילן אין שטוב פון זיין איידעם הרבני החסיד ר' אברהם איילענדער ע"ה ,אדער צומאל אנדערע עלטערע חסידים ,וועלכע פלעגן פארברענגען מיט די יונגעלייט און דערציילן סיפורי צדיקים. אין די רוזשענער הויפן איז באקאנט דעם ווארט וואס דער הייליגער רוזשענער האט געזאגט אויפן פסוק "האספו ואגידה לכם את אשר יקרה אתכם באחרית הימים" ,אז פאר משיח וועט קומען ,וועט זיין א תקופה וואס מען וועט זיך מוזן דראפען אויף די גראדע ווענט זיך צו דערהאלטן ביים רוחניות ,און די איינציגסטע עצה זיך צו האלטן ,וועט זיין נאר דורך זיך צוזאמענקומען און רעדן סיפורי צדיקים .דאס איז דער פשט אין פסוק "האספו" – זאמלט אייך איין" ,ואגודה" – און האלט אייך צוזאמענגעבינדן, "את אשר יקרא אתכם" – אין די טעג וואס עס וועט אייך זיין קאלט ,א לשון פון קרירות" ,באחרית הימים". דעריבער איז אנגענומען אין די רוזשענער הויפן ,זיך צוזאמענצוקומען דריי מאל א שבת :פרייטאג-צו-נאכטס צו א זיץ; שבת בייטאג צו קידוש און
נאכמיטאג אויף שלש-סעודות.
אן אייגענעם קלויז
צען יאר האט מען געדאוונט אין דעם בית-המדרש פון דער קיוויאשדער רב זצ"ל ,בשעת דער ציבור האט זיך געשפירט באקוועם און זיך דארט געפירט מיט אלע מנהגים און יסודות לבית רוזשין-באיאן. למעשה האט זיך דער ציבור פארשפרייט ,הן מצד די שכנים פון ארום, וועלכע האבן זיך אנגעשלאסן און געקומען דאווענען אין בית-המדרש, ווי אויך מצד באיאנער חסידים זעלבסט ,וועלכע האבן געגארט אין אן אייגענעם בית-המדרש און מיט אייגענע פיר ווענט. ערגעץ אינמיטן ווינטע פון יאר תשמ"ז לפ"ק ,האט מען אנגעפרעט ביים רבי'ן איבער דאס עפענען א נייעם שטיבל ,און אינמיטן פרשת ויצא פון יענעם יאר ,איז צוריקגעקומען די תשובה פונעם רבי'ן ,אז מען זאל זיך אריינליייגן אין עפענען אליין א שטיבל פאר באיאנער חסידים ,מיטן רשות פונעם קיוויאשדער רב. נאך אין יענעם וואך האט מען שוין ערלעדיגט א שוהל ,אויף שבת איז זיך דער גאנצער עולם צוזאמענגעקומען אין שטוב פון החסיד המפורסם ר' לוי גלאצער שליט"א אויף איידע ראוד ,וואו מען האט מיסד געווען דעם בית- המדרש צום דאווענען .ר' לוי שליט"א האט איבערגעמאכט זיין גאראדזש און געמאכט דערפון א קלויז פארן צוועק אז די חסידים זאלן האבן וואו צו דאווענען. מען האט דאן גענומען אן אלטן ספר-תורה פון דעם אלטן באיאנער קלויז אין דער איסט-סייט און דאס אריבערגעטראגן צום נייעם שוהל. אויפן ערשטן שבת האבן זיך משתתף געווען פיל חסידים פון שטאט ,וואס זענען ספעציעל ארויסגעקומען קיין מאנסי מיטצוהאלטן דעם ערשטן שבת ,וואס איז אפגעראכטן געווארן מיט גרויס דערהויבנקייט.
ויסעו ויחנו
עס האט נישט גענומען לאנג ,ביז מען האט איינגעזען אז דער ארט איז צו קליין אויפצונעמען דעם ציבור חסידים .אזוי שנעל ווי ביז פסח צייט, האט זיך שוין ארויסגעוויזן דעם נחיצות זיך אריבערצוציען אויף א גרעסערן ארט ,וואו מען זאל קענען דאווענען מיט מער הרחבת הדעת. אויף פסח פון יענעם יאר ,האבן באיאנער חסידים געפראוועט דעם חנוכת-הבית צום נייעם קלויז ,וואס איז סטאנציאנירט געווארן אין א צימער אין בית-מקרא חדר ,אויף מעיפל עוועניו .דאס האט שוין געהייסן א גרויסער שוהל ,וואו מען האט געדאוונט אין די שבתים אין ימים טובים. אבער אויך דארט האט מען נישט לאנג געדאוונט .נאך א שטיק צייט האט זיך דער קלויז ווידער געצויגן קיין ריטא עוועניו ,וואו מען האט ארויסגעדינגען דעם אונטערשטן שטאק פון דער בארדיטשובער שוהל .דארט האט מען אפגעהאלט די תפילות און זיצן פאר א תקופה. לויט ווי עס קוקט אויס ,איז באשערט געווען פאר באיאנער חסידים אין מאנסי ,מיטצומאכן פיל מסעות ,די גאסן אין מאנסי האבן זיך ארומגעקריגט מיט די טענה פון "עלי יניח צדיק את ראשו" ,דעריבער האט דער שטיבל געוואנדערט פון ארט צו ארט און עס האט גענומען א וויילע ביז מען איז אנגעקומען אל המנוחה ואל הנחלה. אין יענע תקופה איז דער קלויז אריבערגעגאנגען קיין עליש-פארקוועי ,צום שטוב פון הרה"ח ר' ישראל יצחק סאלאמאן שליט"א .אין די ערשטע תקופה האט מען געדאוונט אין זיין דיינינג-רום שפעטער האט ר'

האלטנדיג צווישן צוויי גרויסע יארצייטן ,צווישן ג' חשוון – די יארצייט פונעם הייליגן רוזשענער זצוק"ל – און י"ט כסלו – די יארצייט פונעם גרויסן מגיד ממעזריטש זיעועכי"א – האבן מיר אויסגעקליבן דעם וואך צו באשרייבן דער באיאנער קלויז אין מאנסי ,וועמענ'ס רביים זענען אפשטאמיגע פון די אבות החסידות ,די אויבנדערמאנטע צדיקים ושרפי מעלה ,און מיסדים פון די גאלדענע שלשלת לבית רוזשין-באיאן. אין אמת'ן מוז געזאגט ווערן ,אז באיאן אין מאנסי פארמאגט שוין אן אור-אלטער היסטאריע .נאך אזוי פרי ווי אין יאר תשל"ג לפ"ק ,מיט דריי- און-פערציג יאר צוריק ,ווען מאנסי איז נאך געווען א דארף מיט קוים חסידי'שע איינוואוינער ,האט שוין באיאן געהאט א קלויז אין מאנסי .דאס איז ווארשיינליך געווען איינע פון די ערשטע חסידי'שע בתי-מדרשיים אין שטאט און פארמאגט דער זכות בכורה פון חסידות אין מאנסי. אין יענע צייטן זענען געווען חסידי'שע באיאנער בחורים וואס האבן געלערנט אין בית-מדרש עליון ,דאס איז געווען גענוג צו מאכן א צירוף מיט עטליכע בעלי-בתים אין מאנסי ,וואס אינאיינעם איז געשאפן געווארן א באיאנער מנין וואו מען האט אינאיינעם געדאוונט יעדן שבת. מיט די צייט האבן די בחורים חתונה געהאט ,יעדער איז זיך צוגאנגען אויף זיין וועג און דער בית-המדרש איז אויפגעלעזט געווארן.
דער ערשטער קלויז
מיט יארן שפעטער ,ווען די שטאט מאנסי האט זיך פארגרעסערט ,און צוביסלעך האט מען זיך דערזען מיט א שיינעם ציבור באיאנער חסידים אין שטאט ,איז ווידער אויפגעקומען די פראגע פון עפענען א פרישן שטיבל, אן אייגענעם וואונקל ,וואו באיאנער חסידים זאלן זיך שפירן באקוועם ,זיך צו מחזק זיין אין חסידות ,לשאוב מתורת באיאן-רוזשין און פארברענגען אינאיינעם אויפן חסידי'שן שטייגער. באיאנער חסידים האבן זיך צוזאמענגענומען אינאיינעם און געגרינדעט דעם באיאנער קלויז אין שטוב פון מו"ה ר' מענדל גערטנער ע"ה אויף מעיפל-ליף ,וועלכער האט פארדינגען א צימער פאר די חסידים ,וואו מען זאל קענען אפהאלטן תפילות מיט זיצן. דאס איז געווען די התחלה פון דעם באיאנער קלויז אין מאנסי. עס דארף ארויסגעברענגט ווערן ,אז אין באיאן – אזוי ווי אין אלע רוזשענע חצרות – איז דער בית-המדרש אנגערופן געווארן מיטן נאמען "קלויז" ,וואס איז א פארקורצערונג פון 'קהל'ס-הויז' .דארט אויף מעיפל- ליף ,האט זיך אנגעהויבן דעם באיאנער קלויז ,דארט האט מען געדאוונט און פארברענגט עטליכע יאר ,באהבה ובאחוה ובשלום ורעות.

פרייטאג צו נאכטס דאווענט מען מנחה אין קלויז א האלבע שעה פארן שקיעה .שבת איז דער בית-המדרש געפאקט מיט מתפללים ,עס איז פיל עד אפס מקום .נאך די סעודה קומט מען זיך פריש צוזאמען אין קלויז ,וואו מען פארברענגט אינאיינעם בספרי אור-החיים הק' ובזמירות שבת ,אין דער אונטערשטער קידוש-צימער פון קלויז. א באזונדערער פרק דארף אוועקגעגעבן ווערן פאר אט דער קידוש- צימער ,וואס ווערט צומאל גערופן בדרך צחות מיטן צונאמען "סאלאש" – א זכר פון דער אמאליגער סאלאש וואס די אדמור"י בית רוזשין האבן געהאט צו פראווען דארט טישן .די ווענט פון דעם דאזיגן צימער האט שוין איינגעזאפט אין זיך פיל תורה וחסידות ,סיפורי חסידים ועובדות מהנהגות הצדיקים וואס זענען דערציילט געווארן צווישן די דאזיגע פיר ווענט .דעם דאזיגן צימער ווערט געהאלטן אויף אלע חסידי'שע זיצן און פארברענגען אין קלויז .יעדע וואך צו קידוש קומט מען זיך דארט צוזאמען און מען זיצט אינאיינעם אונטער א חסידי'שער אטמאספערע.
