Yes, I would physically feel better lighter and thinner- but this is what works at this moment in time for my family. In general, I feel our society is too laden with guilt- and that is so crippling to a person’s self worth! By the way, as I used to be a raw food vegan and lived on fresh juices, raw fruits and vegetablesI can testify to the validity of the juice diet you mentioned previously. I was on springs! The natural enzymes from the veggies kept me going, and I definitely miss that extra dose of vitality, although I’ll be the first to admit that devoting my life to juicing is absolutely impossible at this point in time… Unless of course, someone were to do it for me… Is there anyone that is trained in creating juices and delivers them before the nutrients die out? BOGGLED BY BOGGLE I was having a lot of fun playing Boggle with my family as part of The Monsey View’s Boggle competition. We worked on it for many hours, and even though we knew we might not be the winners, we were still excited to see what words the winner had come up with that we had missed. How disappointed we were to see that most of the words in the winner’s list were not found on the

board! Please carefully review the list and choose the real winner. RE: SUPERVISOR’S MEZUZAH I’m writing regarding the letter from a sofer concerned about the kashrus of the mezuzah on the office door of Supervisor St. Lawrence. A mezuzah in a public place doesn’t have to be checked so often (less than once in fifteen years), which leaves no room for concerns about the Kashrus of a 15-year-old mezuzah. The only thing is that this mezuzah is perhaps on a private office, where if he would have been Jewish he would be obligated to check it more frequently, but that is not the case… A reader I read your interesting article on Christopher St. Lawrence. There was only thing that was bothering me. I’m not sure why it’s a chashivos that he has a mezuzah on his door. The halacha mifurish is that a goy is not allowed to have a mezuzah on his door, because you don’t know what he will do with a mezuzah. Halachically, he would have to take the mezuzah off his door. RE: THE CHANGING FACE OF MONSEY (ISSUE #24) Dear Resident Who LOVES Monsey, I was not born in Monsey, I did not grow up in Monsey, I did not get married in Monsey, but I DID move to Monsey from a different state eleven years ago. Guess what! I may not be an original Monsey resident, but I also love Monsey for the same reasons you do. I chose to move to Monsey without having family or friends living here. (I still don’t have biological family living here, but several original Monsey families have adopted my family so maybe I could be considered an original Monsey resident by default!) I also would love if Monsey would have stayed the same Monsey that I moved to. However, I am tired of everyone putting the blame on the newcomers. I think the blame has to be shifted a little. It isn’t the people from the city who are ruining Monsey. It is our builders and rich people in real estate who surprise... surprise… have probably been living in Monsey for as long as

you have. (Yes, I can think of a few names as I type this.) Why our distinguished politicians are allowing the growth to go upwards and not outwards is another question to ask. If you need to blame someone, turn to these groups who care more about their money and power than what is good for the community. Growth is not a bad thing when done responsibly. B.L.T.

What’s the Most Effective Way to Burn Fat with Exercise?

ADDING A SPRINT TO YOUR DAY

When I mention exercise to my clients, or to people in general, what usually comes to their mind is spending two hours at a gym, an hour-long walk, or a 45-minute aerobics class. This usually comes along with a frown on their face clearly stating: I don’t have the time, and I don’t enjoy it. So why bother?

As usual, any type of consistent movement is better than not doing it at all. Swimming, walking, dancing, running, and using exercise equipment are all great ways to burn calories. What I want to suggest to you is how you can add a sprint to any type of workout to increase your fatburning capabilities. Following are some examples of how to do it.

If this sounds familiar to you, I have some good news. The slogan I like to use is “shorter and smarter.” Allow me to explain.

SHORT VERSUS LONG PERIODS OF EXERCISING: This may come as a surprise to you, but it’s a good one! If time and enjoyment is indeed an issue for you, then you’re going to like this: I’m not sure where the notion of “spending hours” at the gym is coming from, especially because it’s even more effective to exercise 4-5 times a week for only 25 minutes, than doing an hour’s worth of exercise three times a week! It’s crucial to know the reason why shorter workouts have been shown to be much more effective for weight loss. Every minute you spend exercising, you obviously want to get the most out of it. How can that be accomplished? When you exercise for a shorter time and incorporate ‘sprinting’ wherever you can, you will not only burn calories while working out, but it will have an after-burn effect as well. Which means that you’re going to continuing burning calories for many hours after the exercise session. In addition, your overall metabolism will be raised. Sounds good for 25 minutes,

Terror in Paris BY ROCHEL LEBOVITS

With shock and horror the world watched as Paris, France was attacked yet again by Islamic State Terrorists, this time perpetrating the worst attack on Parisian soil since WWII. The attack took place Friday night, November 13th. A total of eight terrorists were involved, shooting at civilians with machine guns and detonating suicide vests at locations throughout Paris over a period of 100 minutes. The final outcome was at least 129 civilians murdered with 100s more injured, scores critically. There were many tourists among the victims including US Citizens. French President Hollande issued a strong statement vowing to crack down on terror and declaring a state of emergency. Countries across the world quickly joined in condemnation of the attacks offering help and condolences to the

people of France. The following night, famous sights around the world were colored in blue, white and red, the colors of the French flag, in solidarity with the people of France. On Sunday, the French Air Force in an apparent response to the attack, bombed some 20 locations in Raqqa, Syria, an ISIS stronghold, reported to be terrorist recruitment and training sites.

TIMELINE At least 129 people are dead, and another 352 injured, after three teams of jihadis struck the Stade de France football stadium, a handful of bars and cafes, and then finally the Bataclan concert hall. FIRST TWO ATTACKS: STADE DE FRANCE

1-2 The attacks began at 8:17pm GMT at the Stade de France, a sports stadium, where a game was taking place.

THIRD ATTACK: LE PETIT CAMBODGE AND LE CARILLON BAR

The first explosion, a suicide bombing, was at an entrance to the stadium. A suicide bomber approached the gate with a match ticket when he was frisked by a security guard who turned him away.

The game was being watched by 80,000 spectators among them was President Francois Hollande who had to be evacuated from the stadium.

He backed away from the gate and detonated his vest at about 8:20pm GMT near Gate D of the stadium, killing one other person. A passport with the name Ahmed Almuhamed, 25, from Syria, was allegedly found nearby.

FIFTH ATTACK: CAFÉ ‘COMPTOIR VOLTAIRE’

FOURTH ATTACK: LA CASA NOSTRA PIZZERIA AND LA BELLE EQUIPE BAR

4 At 8:25pm GMT a separate team of gunmen arrived in a car and attacked diners at t Le Petit Cambodge and Le Carillon bar in the Canal Saint-Martin area of eastern Paris, killing 15.

A second suicide bomber, Bilal Hadfi, 20, blew himself up near Gate H several minutes later. No one else was reported killed. Hadfi is said to have fought with ISIS in Syria.

5 From there, the militants drove around a mile south-east – apparently past the area of the Bataclan concert venue – to launch another attack, this time on La Belle Equipe bar in Rue de Charonne. At least 19 people died after the terrace was sprayed with bullets at 8:38pm GMT. The attackers then drove off.

The same unit then drove about 500 yards to La Casa Nostra pizzeria and opened fire on diners on the terrace of the restaurant, killing at least five people.

SIXTH ATTACK: BATACLAN MUSIC HALL

Five minutes later, Ibrahim Abdeslam, 31, set off a suicide vest outside the outside cafe 'Comptoir Voltaire' on the Boulevard Voltaire and close to the Bataclan theatre. He hired a car used in the attack.

SEVENTH ATTACK: NEAR STADE DE FRANCE

7 At 8:49pm GMT, the third group (believed to be three men and a woman) armed with AK-47s stormed the Bataclan music hall and began shooting members of the crowd. Survivors claim three blew themselves up and a fourth person was shot dead by police before they could detonate their bomb.

At around 8:50pm GMT a third blast took place near the Stade de France, this time by a McDonald’s restaurant on the fringes of the stadium. The boom caused terror among spectators who had already been attempting to flee the stadium following the first two explosions. The attacker who detonated his suicide vest was identified as a 20-year-old French man living in Belgium.

AFTERMATH The following morning, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks across Paris, saying 'eight brothers wearing explosive belts and carrying assault rifles' conducted a 'blessed attack on... Crusader France.' That afternoon, three people traveling in a grey VW Polo were arrested at the French/Belgian border when police traced the car after it was sighted outside the Bataclan theatre at the time of the attacks. - One of the Bataclan suspects was found carrying a Syrian passport under the name Ahmed Almuhamed who traveled to France as a migrant through Greece on

October 3. Ferry tickets reveal he traveled with another man named Mohammed Almuhamed. - Omar Ismaël Mostefai, 29, from Courcouronnes, Paris was also named as a Bataclan suicide bomber. The petty criminal and father of one was known to police as a radical and had traveled to Algeria and Syria. He was identified by the fingerprint on a severed digit found after he detonated his suicide belt. - Mostefai's father, a brother and other family members have been held and are being questioned. - The car used by the terrorists who murdered diners outside the Casa Nostra pizza restaurant and

the La Belle Équipe cafe was found abandoned 20 minutes away in Montreuil with a cache of weapons inside. - Seven people were detained in Belgium linked to the atrocities - three at the border and four in Brussels. Duvid’s shoulders and coattails are brown with dust. They are the dust of action. The imprints of courage, of doing what needs to be done.

“I have one option. My boss will give us a dirah in Mattersdorf. Malka’la will work to pay it back. The store, the fabrics, will be hers. To earn. To pay him back.” I looked at Duvid. Part of me listened as he outlined the plan. Part of me just watched his movements, how his shoulders curled in on him, how he wanted to give his daughter much, much more. “Duvid,” I said. His head jerked up, and for the first time in this conversation, he looked at me. “Thank you for being the catalyst for such a

She was awake. She looked like she’d been crying. “Malka’la,” I said. “You can start sewing tomorrow. Sew the linen. Sew yourself beautiful things. Your wedding is coming.” “I know,” she said, her voice scratchy. “I need help. And Chuna needs help. He needs it more than I do. Maybe the wedding should wait.” To be continued…

If you don’t have an oven-proof pot, just make sure your pot handles are covered well with silver foil before placing in oven. Remember that the pot handles will be boiling hot when you remove the pot, so be careful!

This tasty rice goes especially well with Chinese dishes. I don’t add salt to it, since soy sauce is pretty salty, but feel free to adjust according to your personal taste.

2 tablespoons oil 1 onion, diced 2 cups rice Salt and pepper 2 teaspoons consommé soup mix 1 tablespoon parsley flakes 1 bay leaf ½ teaspoon thyme 3 cups water Preheat the oven to 400. In a medium ovenproof pot, sauté onion in oil until just golden. Add the rice and brown for an additional 5 minutes. Add salt, pepper, consommé, parsley, bay leaf, thyme and water. Bring to a boil and cover pot. Place in oven for 17 minutes. Let rest 10 minutes before uncovering and removing bay leaf. Mix well before serving.

2 tablespoons oil 1 small onion, diced 1 cup rice 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 cups water Sauté onion in oil until wilted. Add rice. Sauté rice until very toasted. Rice should be light brown; it can take up to 5-10 minutes. Add the soy sauce and stir to combine. Add the water and bring to a boil. Lower the flame and continue to simmer, covered, until the water is absorbed (about 10 minutes). Let sit for a few minutes before serving.

Add the

rice and lower the flame. Simmer covered, until all the water is absorbed, about 10 minutes. Let rice cool in refrigerator for a few hours or overnight. In large frying pan, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Beat the two eggs and add to frying pan. Let sit until eggs are set. Remove from pan and cut

into small pieces. In the same pan, add 1 tablespoon oil. Add onion and sauté until wilted. Add cooled rice and continue sautéing. Add soy sauce and onion soup mix. Mix well. Add peas and carrots and eggs. Fluff and serve. Enjoy!

CREATIVE STYLES The balaclava, also known as the modern-day ski mask, is the warmest option on the market. Every part of the face is covered, save for the lips, nostrils, and eyes. Eagle feathers feature prominently in Native American ceremonial wear, while porcupine fur was usually worn on the battlefield. Perukes, also known as wigs- were high-style in the 18Th century. Made out of horse, goat, or human hair, they were frequently powdered with orange or lavender scented powder that hopefully camouflaged any unpleasant odors coming from the wearer. (Keep in mind bathing was a once-a-year ritual for most people of that era!) Looking to decorate your hat with your own creative style? Keep in mind that as per world hat etiquette, women should only place decorations on the right side of her head covering.

HEADCOVERING IN HALACHA It is forbidden for a man to walk fourcubits with his head uncovered. When donning a tallis, one is required to cover his head completely, letting the tallis hang over until it reaches below the mouth, with the fringes wrapped around the neck, for the time it takes one to walk four cubits. Many men have the custom to cover their heads with two head coverings, for many reasons. One of them being that there is a shita that the full head must be covered- which modern day yarmulke design fails to do.

“Big Wig”: a term used to denote a snobby person. Historically, only the most well-to-do could afford the biggest, fluffiest, hardest-to-care-for wigs. Snoopy Cap: The inner headgear worn by astronauts. Over at NASA they lost their creativity when it came to the outer piece however, boringly calling it “helmet.” Newsboy: Popular up until the 1950s, this 8-section small-brimmed hat has made a comeback! Although it was worn by the working class of newsboys and cab-drivers, it is now a popular hat to stylishly dress your little boy in! Bonnet: A hat that ties under the chin, typically with a brim framing the face. Historically worn by women and children, now it’s most popular for infants.

Kosher food is now a billion dollar industry, according to Menachem Lubinsky, Kosherfest organizer. Surprisingly, nonJewish customers also make up a large percentage of the kosher food market, and can be found buying products in bulk for national grocery chains.

Kosherfest! World renown as the world’s largest kosher certified products trade show, approximately 6,000 supermarket heads, caterers and kosher food establishments attend yearly. With over 325 exhibitors featuring their kosher certified products and services for the kosher market, there’s always something exciting to see. It’s here that suppliers of kosher certified products have the greatest opportunity to reach thousands of buyers from across the globe by presenting their products and/or services at the Kosherfest event. Kosherfest serves the kosher food industry, which has seen a tremendous explosion of growth in recent years. Gone are the simple days where small, rundown grocery stores stocked the basic food items. Gone are the days when one pizza store served the entire community. Today large, immaculate supermarkets are stocked with every imaginable kosher item, restaurants with exotic and intricate dishes, and large

“People think positively about kosher food,” said Mordy Dicker of Englewood, Executive Vice President of Business Development for KEDEM/Kayco, “it’s become trendy.” Kayco is a merger of KEDEM Foods, Kenover Marketing and B&W Foods. The company has a huge distribution center in Bayonne and is now the largest kosher distributor in the world with thousands of products and more than 100 brands.

Three chefs engaged in a heated culinary battle during Kosherfest’s 8th Annual Culinary Competition presented by The Center for Kosher Culinary Arts. The winner, Chef Jasmine Einalhori of Sage Kitchen, beat out Chef Bryan Gruka and Chef Albert Bijou with her dish of turkey Bolognese with bean radish radicchio and fennel salad with watermelon radish during the 30 minute cook-off. A trophy and $500 cash prize was the winner’s prize. The contest was hosted by judges Joshua Massin, Alan Boner, and Jamie Geller.

At the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secausus, New Jersey, on November 10th and 11th, the Kosherfest event brought together thousands of buyers and vendors alike, from all specters of the kosher market. Jews from all walks of life comprised the bulk of attendees. Before entering the hall where the booths were displayed, attendees passed a long wall of showcases highlighting new kosher products. The floor of the show was divided by aisles; on the side of each aisle each vendor displayed their products in creatively decorated booths to catch the buyers’ eyes.

Numerous exhibitors put out samples of food their company produces so that buyers can get a taste of what they have to offer. This year, while there were no overt trends in the kosher food industry, there appeared to be a growing momentum towards healthful, and specialty foods like glutenfree cooking and baking alternatives. Companies like Kedem (also known as Kayco) have continued to expand their gluten-free lines which began last year. Health Garden, an up and coming company of healthy sugar subsitutes, displayed an entire line of

healthful sweeteners. As in previous years, the continued success of ready-made frozen foods like pizza, prepared fish and side dishes for the kosher consumer abounded. Another subtle but interesting trend we noticed, were large sized snack packages typically sold to grocery stores, but now being bought by individual kosher consumer. Pas Yisroel displayed large canisters filled with small pastry snacks that are to be sold in grocery stores. It was thrilling to catch a behind the scenes glimpse of the up and coming new food products!

Hundreds Celebrated

Hachnosas Sefer Torah at FountainView

Dedication Ceremony Brought Generations Together Over 300 people gathered together last Sunday, November 15th to celebrate the Hachnosas Sefer Torah at FountainView at College Road, Rockland County’s premier retirement community. The community received a Sefer Torah from the Sperling family to commemorate the memory of Paul and Helen Sperling, who were residents of the community. Joining in the celebration with the Sperlings, were the community’s senior residents, staff and family, area residents and children from Yeshiva of Spring Valley, Mezamrin, who carried flags commemorating the occasion. The festivities included the Rabbi Yerachmiel Seplowitz writing the final letters in the torah, the march throughout the lobby accompanied by the Yedidim Choir, the procession and dancing outside the community entrance and the concluding ceremony in the community’s town hall. Rochelle Graubard, the Sperling’s daughter, spoke of the inspiring life their parents enjoyed at FountainView. She said that her parents came on a trial basis and were truly impressed with the service, the well-kept grounds and the pool. But most important, the personnel at the community were exceptional in how they accommodated everyone’s needs and treated them with dignity and respect. In particular, her father was ecstatic that there is a shul on the premises and enjoyed daily prayer services. Paul and Helen Sperling were married for 72 years and Paul lived until 100 years old. Rochelle noted that the family felt a Sefer Torah seemed the most fitting way to immortalize the memory of their mother and father. Neither of them was ostentatious and they always valued what was

truly important. The family felt now it is befitting to commemorate their lives with the simcha and love of Torah. The magnificent Hashnosas Sefer Torah coincided with the day after Paul Sperling’s Hebrew birthday and honored the couple for the boundless love they exhibited for their fellow Jews and their dedication to Yiddishkeit.

At A Recent Hachnosas Sefer Torah In Memory Of The Sperlings

My husband drives a gray minivan. So does my son, and so does my son-inlaw. Three of my neighbors also drive gray minivans. Check the parking lot of any supermarket, yeshiva, catering hall or bungalow colony, and you’ll notice that most of the cars parked there are… gray minivans! Apparently, the car companies had a deal with the navy’s surplus division to buy their leftover gray paint. So, what’s really wrong with everyone’s car being the same color? If you ever stood on a street corner with four large Amazing Savings bags waiting to be picked up, you know that this phenomenon poses a big problem. There you are, looking for a gray van. And it just so happens that out of every five or six cars that pass your way, at least three are gray vans. My husband does not understand the problem. “Just

I once went into a grocery store to pick up a few things. My husband parked near a snow bank to wait for me. While I was inside the store another spot became empty and he moved the car, but he forgot to call me to say that he had moved... With two grocery bags in hand, I climbed the snow bank and opened the passenger side door. At the wheel sat a young man, who at first glance resembled my son-in-law. My first thought was “What’s he doing here?” The young man’s thought must have been a little more alarming, “What’s she doing here?” As I started to ask him where his father-in-law had disappeared to, I realized my mistake. I was mortified!

My first thought was “What’s he doing here?” check the license plate!” he advises. Try that from two hundred feet away, especially when your view is partially blocked by a TOR bus waiting to drop off its passengers. Anyone who is married to a gray minivan driver has her stories, some humorous, some not, about approaching the wrong car. Here are two of mine.

Another minivan confusion occurred when my neighbors were making a simcha in a hall that had very limited parking. My husband parked on the street while we went inside to wish the baal simcha “Mazel Tov”. When I came out of the hall I headed straight to the place where we had left the car, not knowing that my husband had come out before me and had found a

more convenient spot. Boy was my friend’s husband surprised when I opened the passenger door of his car. Boy was I embarrassed! Even some car services are in on the gray mania. Just last week, I called a car service to ask him why the car wasn’t there yet. His answer was: “One more minute, gray minivan.” In the ensuing minute (more like 180 seconds) I counted seven gray minivans, five of them passing by consecutively. When his lease was up recently, my husband let me choose the color of our new van, showing me the choices in the car dealership’s brochure. (That’s the only thing I get to choose. The other options are my boys’ department.) I

actually thought I had chosen a shade of brown. To my utter disappointment, he drove up in a brand-new van: gray again. No wonder they say you should not trust anything but reallife coloring. I am the mother of an extremely bright and intellectually gifted three-year-old girl, ke”h. Over the summer, we were debating back and forth whether or not we should register her for school. On the one hand, she is quite gifted; on the other hand, we were concerned about her social and emotional readiness. We are aware that beginning school is a milestone which involves many changes and adjustments to new experiences. Since she is by nature more of a sensitive child, we couldn’t determine whether or not she was ready to flourish in a classroom environment. After much thought, we decided to delay the option of school for another year. However, now that school has started, I am faced with a daunting responsibility in determining what my role is as a mother in this uncommon situation. I would love to hear from you what my focus should be this year.

There is an old Yiddish adage that goes: “Unter a mammas fartich is gut tzu zein,” translated as: “It is good to be beneath a mother’s apron.” This is to imply that a child can learn so much just by being around her mother in the security of her home. Rav Shamshon Rafoel Hirsch zt”l asserts that it is the mother of a child who is primarily responsible for his or her early education. Just as the first mother in the history of mankind was named Chava, which literally means “giver of thoughts” or “she who speaks,” every mother should strive to be a “Chava” - the cultivator of the language and the thoughts of her child. Thus she is duly charged with the role of teaching language and thinking skills to her child. Rabbi Hirsch further explains that a mother shouldn’t concern herself with specific schoolwork in anticipation of eventual schooling, like teaching the child to recite multiplication tables etc. Although the intention may be pure, it is often more damaging than helpful. Rather, instead of teaching her child learning-based skills, a mother should confine her activities to something far more important: she should teach her child “how to learn.” This means that she should teach her how to think and speak properly, to perceive things correctly, and to utilize her senses consciously and intelligently. The easiest and quickest way to work on the “how to learn” set of skills is through play. Although some adults think that play is a waste of time - it is actually play that allows children to reach their highest potential. It is absolutely essential for their survival and development! When children are given the freedom to play, their minds, bodies, and spirits fully develop and thrive. The methods used to convey the knowledge of “how to learn” require much sensitivity, creativity, and involvement. Listed below are just a few activities that serve a useful purpose.

DRESS-UP /PUPPETS: The “childish” speech, games, toys, and social interactions of children are critical to their maturation and development. It is often difficult to wait and to be sure that all systems - physical, emotional, as well as intellectual, are ready, especially when we are faced with an outstanding mind. However, we must remember to keep the glow on our children’s faces by raising them in accordance with the vision of proper chinuch promoted by Chazal. Sometimes that means keeping our gifted three-year-old home for yet another year of focusing on healthy play.

Your credit score: The higher your credit score, the lower the interest rate. Not only is a high credit score vital in getting a low mortgage rate, it influences whether you can get a home loan at all. Buyers below a certain threshold, typically a FICO score of 620, have a better chance of striking oil in their bathtub than securing a mortgage. It's possible, but it will require some really strong compensating factors. Depending on the lender, the mortgage rates offered to the highest and lowest credit tiers can vary as much as a full percentage point and a half, says Louis Spagnuolo, a former vice president of mortgage banking at WCS Lending in Boca Raton, Florida. Good credit can save you thousands on your mortgage. On a $400,000.00 mortgage loan, 4% costs $1,909.66 monthly and 5% costs $2,147.29 monthly. Over a 30-year period, the difference is huge, $85,546.80!

WHAT LENDERS LOOK FOR Lenders prefer borrowers with low balances, a long history of on-time payments and a mix of credit utilization -- for instance, a car loan and a couple of revolving accounts such as credit cards.
